Abstract

This article examined the manner in which Latina teachers' enacted agency to challenge institutional barriers impacting Latinas/os in the educational system. A theoretical framework is suggested as a tool to describe the practices of four Latina teachers working in elementary schools serving a high population of Latino students in Southern California. Using qualitative mixed methods, as an exploratory study, the classroom teachers identified three themes representing their journey in search of an equitable education for Latinas/os. 168. The Intentionality of Critical Pedagogical Teachers in Public Schools: Passion, Constraints, and Contradictions

Abstract

This research study examined the role of critical pedagogical teachers within the education system. Public school teachers in the past ten years have been placed in a vulnerable position due in part to the high stakes testing within the federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. Classroom teachers are instructed by school administration to increase test scores, especially state standardized test scores. Orfield (2005) and Nieto (2002) suggest that teachers are placed, with much tension and pressure, to increase test scores and this, in turn, impacts their daily instruction. Teachers have voiced that test preparation and test readiness have limited their teachings of other subjects (Vinovskis, 2009). To address this limitation placed on teachers, this research study examined specifically the practices of critical pedagogical teachers who have worked towards negotiating these tensions and potential barriers. Critical pedagogical teachers are defined as teachers that empower students by valuing students' culture, language and voice in the classroom setting. According to Darder (1991) and Bartolome (2007), critical pedagogy in the classroom is a method for encouraging and empowering students in the public school system. To document and address this focus, this research study employed an interpretive research approach, utilizing multiple case studies. Interpretive Research was used to examine critical pedagogical teachers' ideology and their practices in the classroom and community. There were five participating elementary teachers. The methodology used within the research study included teacher autobiographies, interviews, classroom and community observations. The study aimed to define the characteristics of critical pedagogical teachers, and documented the manner in which critical pedagogical teachers negotiate their practice in the educational system. The results revealed five major themes across teachers: (1) advocacy of voice, (2) intentionality of action, (3) foundation of trust, (4) transformative resistance and (5) negotiation of practice. The data results showed that across the five teachers, the levels of tension varied due to institutional constraints and contextual factors in the school community. In addition, the data revealed that the five critical pedagogical teachers in this study are on diverse journeys in their quest for social justice in education. 173. Toward a Borderlands Ethics: The Undocumented Migrant and Haunted Communities in Contemporary Chicana/o Fiction

Abstract

By reading Helena Maria Viramontes's "Cariboo Cafe" and Daniel Chacon's "Godoy Lives," this essay argues that Chicana/o fiction articulates what I call a "borderlands ethics." Both Viramontes and Chacon give the undocumented migrant the power to merge the United States and Latin America, self and other, citizen and noncitizen. These mergers demonstrate how a borderlands ethical stance can produce new unauthorized truths and relations outside the law and beyond national borders. However, these stories of ghostly kinship also produce a political imperative: to resurrect borderlands relations and experiences in the public sphere. Through the trope of haunting and an engagement with a borderlands ethics, "The Cariboo Cafe" and "Godoy Lives" help us understand that maintaining a Latina/o ethnic identity is not a simple act of preservation; it is an ethico-political project that challenges the United States to form new visions of democracy and new relations with Latin America in order to maintain transborder communities and families.

Abstract

This paper presents the drive-response synchronization problem for competitive neural networks in predefined time. The response system is considered in the presence of deterministic disturbances satisfying Lipschitz conditions and in the presence of both stochastic white noises and deterministic disturbances satisfying Lipschitz conditions. The effect of deterministic disturbances and stochastic noises is suppressed by designing a linear time-varying continuous control input driving the synchronization errors at the origin for an a priori predefined time, independently of initial conditions, deterministic disturbances, and stochastic noises. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate validity of the obtained theoretical results. The conducted comparisons with other predefined-time convergent synchronization algorithms reveal better performance of the proposed synchronization technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To know the overall regional or international scientific production is of vital importance to many areas of knowledge. Nevertheless, in interdisciplinary areas such as Geographic Information Science (GISc) it is not enough to just count papers published in specific journals. Most of them, as is the case of the International Journal of Remote Sensing (IJRS), welcome GISc papers but are not exclusive to that area so the production assignable to authors in the region must consider not only affiliation but also whether or not each paper falls into the theme of GISc. IJRS publishes far more papers than any other GISc journal, so it is important to assess quantitatively how many of them are of GISc. In this work, a representative sample of IJRS articles published over a period of almost 30 years was analyzed using a specific GISc definition. With these data, a manual classification methodology through a set of experts was carried out, and a dataset was built, analyzed, and statistically tested. As a result we estimate that between 47 and 76% of the IJRS articles can be considered from GISc, with a confidence level of 95%. Aside from the primary goal, this set could be used as a gold standard for future classification tasks. It constitutes the first GISc dataset of this kind, that may be used to train artificial intelligence systems capable of performing the same classification automatically and in a massive way. A similar procedure could be applied to other interdisciplinary fields of knowledge as well.
