Summary: The exact incidence of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in Nigeria is unknown. Globally, CO poisoning is frequently unrecognized and under-reported since the clinical presentation is relatively non-specific. The circumstances usually involve an unsuspected increase of CO in an enclosed environment. We .. present the case of a five-year old girl who was brought to the Emergency Paediatics Unit with altered consciousness and profound muscle weakness following exposure to exhaust fumes from a petrol powered electric generator. The generating set was usually operated within the kitchen during the preceding year, but on that particular day, a large refrigerator was placed beside the kitchen door thereby preventing its complete closure. She made an uneventful recovery following treatment with 100 percent oxygen. The case highlights the susceptibility of children to CO poisoning caused by operating petrol powered electric generators within the house. Health education of the community is necessary to avert such hazards.

Baetiella muchei (Braasch, 1978) is recorded for the first time from the Neeru stream of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The variability in larval characters such as size, the shape of the labrum, and the number of the sub-marginal arc of setae in the labrum differs from 12 to 22, degree of fusion of the mandibular incisors, spines on the distal margin of the tergites, distal margin of the paraproct, and the length of cerci are observed from the Indian population when compared to the type specimens. The species number of Baetiella Uéno, 1931 has now increased to six in India. A distributional map of this species is also provided.

This research examines the significance of restoring efficient water management systems in India’s semiarid environment, with special emphasis on the role of traditional irrigation structures, such as tanks, in collecting and storing limited water resources. Assessing the benefits of any restoration program, especially when socioeconomic and environmental benefits are involved, is challenging. In the context of tank rehabilitation, a cost-benefit analysis will be conducted regarding economic and ecological returns in the post-desiltation phase. Since the restoration process requires a significant investment, assessing the project’s viability during the planning stage is better. The present study proposes a novel method to indirectly analyse the cost-benefit of the tank restoration process by correlating run-off and storage capacity of tanks before the planning phase. The Ambuliyar sub-basin, which covers an area of 930 square kilometres in Tamil Nadu, India, comprising 181 tanks (water bodies) of varying sizes and shapes, was taken for this study. This study employed the Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS-CN) method, incorporating factors such as soil type, land cover, land use practices, and advanced remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to simulate surface run-off. Run-off volume and tank capacity were compared for all seasons at the micro-watershed level. The results demonstrated that the run-off volume in each micro-watershed significantly exceeded the tank capacity across all seasons. Even during the summer, the run-off volumes in the micro-watershed were considerably higher than the tank capacity. The findings suggest tank restoration can effectively store run-off and significantly fulfil agricultural and other essential needs throughout the year, thereby improving the local rural economy. This study also highlights the need for periodic maintenance and rehabilitation of these tank systems to retain their functionality.

Abstract With cancer immunotherapy and precision medicine dynamically evolving, there is greater need for pre-clinical models that can better replicate the intact tumor and its complex tumor microenvironment (TME). Precision-cut tumor slices (PCTS) have recently emerged as an ex vivo human tumor model, offering the opportunity to study individual patient responses to targeted therapies, including immunotherapies. However, little is known about the physiologic status of PCTS and how culture conditions alter gene expression. In this study, we generated PCTS from head and neck cancers (HNC) and mesothelioma tumors (Meso) and undertook transcriptomic analyses to understand the changes that occur in the timeframe between PCTS generation and up to 72 h (hrs) in culture. Our findings showed major changes occurring during the first 24 h culture period of PCTS, involving genes related to wound healing, extracellular matrix, hypoxia, and IFNγ-dependent pathways in both tumor types, as well as tumor-specific changes. Collectively, our data provides an insight into PCTS physiology, which should be taken into consideration when designing PCTS studies, especially in the context of immunology and immunotherapy.

Abstract Maize (Zea mays), a major food crop worldwide, is susceptible to infection by the saprophytic fungus Aspergillus flavus that can produce the carcinogenic metabolite aflatoxin (AF) especially under climate change induced abiotic stressors that favor mold growth. Several studies have used “-omics” approaches to identify genetic elements with potential roles in AF resistance, but there is a lack of research identifying the involvement of small RNAs such as microRNAs (miRNAs) in maize-A. flavus interaction. In this study, we compared the miRNA profiles of three maize lines (resistant TZAR102, moderately resistant MI82, and susceptible Va35) at 8 h, 3 d, and 7 d after A. flavus infection to investigate possible regulatory antifungal role of miRNAs. A total of 316 miRNAs (275 known and 41 putative novel) belonging to 115 miRNA families were identified in response to the fungal infection across all three maize lines. Eighty-two unique miRNAs were significantly differentially expressed with 39 miRNAs exhibiting temporal differential regulation irrespective of the maize genotype, which targeted 544 genes (mRNAs) involved in diverse molecular functions. The two most notable biological processes involved in plant immunity, namely cellular responses to oxidative stress (GO:00345990) and reactive oxygen species (GO:0034614) were significantly enriched in the resistant line TZAR102. Coexpression network analysis identified 34 hubs of miRNA-mRNA pairs where nine hubs had a node in the module connected to their target gene with potentially important roles in resistance/susceptible response of maize to A. flavus. The miRNA hubs in resistance modules (TZAR102 and MI82) were mostly connected to transcription factors and protein kinases. Specifically, the module of miRNA zma-miR156b-nb – squamosa promoter binding protein (SBP), zma-miR398a-3p – SKIP5, and zma-miR394a-5p – F-box protein 6 combinations in the resistance-associated modules were considered important candidates for future functional studies.

Understanding imaging anatomy is the basis for accurate diagnosis and standardized reporting of the prostatic lesions. Study Design A retrospective cohort study. Purpose To determine outcomes following all-posterior surgery using computed tomography navigation, hybrid stabilization, and multiple anchor point techniques in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) and dystrophic scoliosis. Overview of Literature Previous studies favored antero-posterior fusion as the most reliable method; however, approaching the spine anteriorly was fraught with significant complications. With the advent of computer assisted navigation and multiple anchor point method, posterior only approach is reporting successful outcomes. Methods This study included patients who underwent all-posterior surgical deformity correction for dystrophic NF-1 curves. Coronal and sagittal Cobbs angles, apical rotation, and the presence of dystrophic features were evaluated before surgery. Postoperatively, sagittal, coronal, and axial correction, implant position, and implant densities were evaluated. The decline in curve correction and implant-related complications were evaluated at follow-up. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Scoliosis Research Society-22 revised index. Results This study involved 50 patients with a mean age of 13.6 years and a mean follow-up duration of 5.52 years. With a mean coronal flexibility of 18.7%, the mean apical vertebral rotation (AVR), preoperative coronal Cobb angle, and sagittal kyphosis were 27.4°, 64.01°, and 47.70°, respectively. Study Design A retrospective cohort study. Purpose This study aimed to understand the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in predicting neurological deficits in traumatic lower lumbar fractures (LLFs; L3–L5). Overview of Literature Despite studies on the radiological risk factors for neurological deficits in thoracolumbar fractures, very few have focused on LLFs. Moreover, the potential utility of MRI in LLFs has not been evaluated. Methods In total, 108 patients who underwent surgery for traumatic LLFs between January 2010 and January 2020 were reviewed to obtain their demographic details, injury level, and neurology status at the time of presentation (American Spinal Injury Association [ASIA] grade). Preoperative computed tomography scans were used to measure parameters such as anterior vertebral body height, posterior vertebral body height, loss of vertebral body height, local kyphosis, retropulsion of fracture fragment, interpedicular distance, canal compromise, sagittal transverse ratio, and presence of vertical lamina fracture. MRI was used to measure the canal encroachment ratio (CER), cross-sectional area of the thecal sac (CSAT), and presence of an epidural hematoma. Results Of the 108 patients, 9 (8.3%) had ASIA A, 4 (3.7%) had ASIA B, 17 (15.7%) had ASIA C, 21 (19.4%) had ASIA D, and 57 (52.9%) had ASIA E neurology upon admission. The Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score (p=0.000), CER (p=0.050), and CSAT (p=0.019) were found to be independently associated with neurological deficits on the multivariate analysis. The receiver operating characteristic curves showed that only CER (area under the curve [AUC], 0.926; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.860–0.968) and CSAT (AUC, 0.963; 95% CI, 0.908–0.990) had good discriminatory ability, with the optimal cutoff of 50% and 65.3 mm2, respectively. Conclusions Based on the results, the optimal cutoff values of CER >50% and CSAT >65.3 mm2 can predict the incidence of neurological deficits in LLFs.

Abstract Health and disease are fundamentally influenced by microbial communities and their genes (the microbiome). An in-depth analysis of microbiome structure that enables the classification of individuals based on their health can be crucial in enhancing diagnostics and treatment strategies to improve the overall well-being of an individual. In this paper, we present a novel semi-supervised methodology known as Randomized Feature Selection based Latent Dirichlet Allocation (RFSLDA) to study the impact of the gut microbiome on a subject’s health status. Since the data in our study consists of fuzzy health labels, which are self-reported, traditional supervised learning approaches may not be suitable. As a first step, based on the similarity between documents in text analysis and gut-microbiome data, we employ Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a topic modeling approach which uses microbiome counts as features to group subjects into relatively homogeneous clusters, without invoking any knowledge of observed health status (labels) of subjects. We then leverage information from the observed health status of subjects to associate these clusters with the most similar health status making it a semi-supervised approach. Finally, a feature selection technique is incorporated into the model to improve the overall classification performance. The proposed method provides a semi-supervised topic modelling approach that can help handle the high dimensionality of the microbiome data in association studies. Our experiments reveal that our semi-supervised classification algorithm is effective and efficient in terms of high classification accuracy compared to popular supervised learning approaches like SVM and multinomial logistic model. The RFSLDA framework is attractive because it (i) enhances clustering accuracy by identifying key bacteria types as indicators of health status, (ii) identifies key bacteria types within each group based on estimates of the proportion of bacteria types within the groups, and (iii) computes a measure of within-group similarity to identify highly similar subjects in terms of their health status.

Vocabulary is often overlooked by educators, yet it is one of the most important aspects of language learning. It is essential for all four language abilities, as it is linked to writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Without comprehensive vocabulary knowledge, students may not be successful in acquiring English as a language. One potential way for English language students to improve their vocabulary is to use multimedia sources like animated movies. Animated movies can provide significant benefits to students by using visual aids that enhance comprehension and facilitate improved learning outcomes. This paper aims to understand the effectiveness of vocabulary learning and teaching through animated movies. This article investigates the efficacy and role of animated films in the acquisition of vocabulary. The articles reviewed for this paper focus on the development, analysis, and examination of animated movies for enhancing vocabulary acquisition. In addition, the paper examines the research design, method, and theory that support the use of animated films in research. The review paper implies that animation films enhance vocabulary more effectively than traditional classroom settings.
