We present the results of a wideband high-resolution polarization study of Hydra A, one of the most luminous FR I radio galaxies known and among the most well studied. The radio emission from this source displays extremely large Faraday rotation measures (RMs), ranging from −12,300 rad m−2 to 5000 rad m−2, the majority of which are believed to originate from magnetized thermal gas external to the radio tails. The radio emission from both tails strongly depolarizes with decreasing frequency. Depolarization, as a function of wavelength, is commonly nonmonotonic, often showing oscillatory behavior, with strongly nonlinear rotation of the polarization position angle with λ 2. A simple model, based on the RM screen derived from the high-frequency, high-resolution data, predicts the lower frequency depolarization remarkably well. The success of this model indicates the majority of the depolarization can be attributed to fluctuations in the magnetic field on scales <1500 pc, suggesting the presence of turbulent magnetic field/electron density structures on subkiloparsec scales within a Faraday rotating medium. The Seyfert galaxy NGC 2639 was known to exhibit three episodes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) jet/lobe activity. We present here the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) 735 MHz image of NGC 2639 showing a fourth episode as witnessed by the discovery of ∼9 kpc radio lobes misaligned with the previously known ∼1.5 kpc, ∼360 pc, and ∼3 pc jet features detected through the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), respectively. Using the spectral ageing software brats , we derive the ages of the ∼9 kpc, ∼1.5 kpc, and ∼360 pc episodes to be, respectively, |$34^{+4}_{-6}$|⁠ , |$11.8^{+1.7}_{-1.4}$|⁠ , and |$2.8^{+0.7}_{-0.5}$| Myr, and conclude that minor mergers occurred 9−22 Myr apart. NGC 2639 shows a deficit of molecular gas in its central ∼6 kpc region. The GALEX NUV image also shows a deficiency of recent star formation in the same region, while the star formation rate surface density in NGC 2639 is lower by a factor of 5−18 compared to the global Schmidt law of star-forming galaxies. This makes NGC 2639 a rare case of a Seyfert galaxy showing episodic jet activity and possible signatures of jet-driven AGN feedback. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the ionized and highly ionized gas phases in the Seyfert 2 galaxy IC 5063 by means of the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectroscopy. Our analysis allowed us to detect a high-ionization gas outflow traced by the coronal lines [Fe  vii ] λ6087 and [Fe  x ] λ6375. Both emissions are found to be extended. The former up to 1.2 kpc and 700 pc north-west (NW) and south-east (SE) from the nucleus, respectively. The latter reaches 700 pc NW of the nucleus. This is the first time that [Fe  x ] emission is observed at such distances from the central engine in an active galactic nucleus. The [Fe  vii ] λ6087 emission peaks at the nucleus, with two secondary peaks at the position of the NW and SE radio lobes. The gas kinematics is complex, with the coronal emission displaying split line profiles along the radio jet and line widths of several hundred km s−1. Velocity shifts of up to 600 km s−1 in excess of the systemic velocity of the galaxy are found very close to the radio lobes and along the jet propagation. The extended coronal gas is characterized by temperatures reaching 20 000 K and electron densities >102 cm−3, with the larger values associated with the regions of larger turbulence, likely due to the passage of the radio jet. This hypothesis is supported by photoionization models that combine the effects of the central engine and shocks. Our work highlights the strong relationship between extended coronal emission and the radio jet, with the former suitably tracing the latter, which in the case of IC 5063, propagates very close to the galaxy disc. Very high energy (VHE) γ-rays (⁠|$\gtrsim\!\! 0.1\rm ~TeV$|⁠) and neutrinos are crucial for identifying accelerators of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), but this is challenging especially for UHECR nuclei. In this work, we develop a numerical code to solve the transport equation for UHECRs and their secondaries, where both nuclear and electromagnetic cascades are taken into account self-consistently, considering steady UHECR accelerators such as radio galaxies. In particular, we focus on Centaurus A, which has been proposed as one of the most promising UHECR sources in the local Universe. Motivated by observations of extended VHE γ-ray emission from its kiloparsec-scale jet by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), we study interactions between UHECRs accelerated in the large-scale jet and various target photon fields including blazar-like beamed core emission, and present a quantitative study on VHE γ-ray signatures of UHECR nuclei, including the photodisintegration and Bethe–Heitler pair production processes. We show that VHE γ-rays from UHECR nuclei could be detected by the ground-based γ-ray telescopes given that the dominant composition of UHECRs consists of intermediate-mass (such as oxygen) nuclei. We present a multiwavelength (from far-ultraviolet to |${\rm H}\, \rm {\small I}$| emission) study of star formation feedback on the kinematics of the interstellar medium in the Sculptor galaxy, NGC 253. Its three well-known features (a disrupted stellar disc, a previously reported declining rotation curve, and anomalous |${\rm H}\, \rm {\small I}$| gas) are studied in a common context of disc asymmetries. About 170 h of on-source ATCA observations are collected and reduced into two versions of |${\rm H}\, \rm {\small I}$| data cubes of different angular resolution (30 arcsec/2 arcmin) and H  i column density sensitivity (7.4 × 1019 cm−2/4 × 1018 cm−2). We separate the anomalous gas from the disc using a custom-made line profile fitting toolkit called FMG. Two star formation tracers (H α, FUV emission) are carefully processed and studied. We find that at R > 7.5 kpc, the star formation activity is strongly lopsided (SFRNE > SFRSW), and investigate several other properties (H α/FUV, dust temperature, stellar age, and disc stability parameters). We also find that the declining nature of the rotation curve perceived by previous studies is not intrinsic but a combined effect of kinematical asymmetries at R  = 7.5–16 kpc. This is likely the consequence of star formation triggered outflow. The mass distribution and the time-scale of the anomalous gas also imply that it originates from gas outflow, which is perhaps caused by galaxy–galaxy interaction considering the crowded environment of NGC 253. We study the close proximity of the well-known and well-studied 3C31 class FRI radio galaxy in order to reveal the influence of the environment on an extragalactic radio source. It was shown that about 110 million years ago the galaxies NGC 380 and NGC 386 were located near the galaxy NGC 383 (the parent galaxy of 3C31). On the other hand, the modeling of the spectral characteristics of the radio emission of the central part of the radio galaxy 3C31 gives an estimate of the age of the central jet of about 100 million years. Therefore, it can be assumed that one of the possible reasons for the appearance or resumption of the radioactivity of the galaxy NGC 383 may be a triple close passage of galaxies. Dual super massive black holes (SMBHs) at sub-kpc to kpc scales, the product of galaxy mergers, are progenitors of eventually coalescing binary SMBHs. If both or one of the dual SMBHs are accreting, they may appear as dual AGNs or off-nucleus AGNs. Studying such systems is essential to learn the dynamical evolution of binary SMBHs as well as the process of galaxy merging. Recently a novel astrometry-based method named varstrometry has been put forward to search for dual SMBHs at high redshift, as the unsynchronized flux variability of dual AGNs (or off-nucleus AGNs) will cause astrometric jitters detectable by Gaia without spatially resolving them. Based on Gaia varstrometry, we select a rare sample of five radio loud quasars with clear Gaia astrometric jitters. With e-MERLIN observations, we have revealed a single compact radio source for each of them. Remarkably all but one exhibit clear Gaia -radio offsets of ∼9–60 mas. The observed Gaia jitters appear consistent with the expected values. These detected Gaia -radio offsets suggest these candidate dual SMBHs may have projected separations as small as ∼0.01–0.1 arcsec (∼0.1 kpc, depending on the optical flux ratio of two SMBHs). Meanwhile, this work highlights the remarkably high efficiency of Gaia varstrometry selection of jittering sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio-loud compact radio sources (CRSs) are characterised by morphological compactness of the jet structure centred on the active nucleus of the galaxy. Most of the local elliptical galaxies are found to host a CRS with nuclear luminosities lower than those of typical quasars, ≲ 10 42 erg s - 1 . Recently, low-luminosity CRSs with a LINER-like optical spectrum have been named Fanaroff–Riley (FR) type 0 to highlight their lack of substantially extended radio emission at kpc scales, in contrast with the other Fanaroff–Riley classes, full-fledged FR Is and FR II radio galaxies. FR 0s are the most abundant class of radio galaxies in the local Universe, and characterised by a higher core dominance, poorer Mpc-scale environment and smaller (sub-kpc scale, if resolved) jets than FR Is. However, FR 0s share similar host and nuclear properties with FR Is. A different accretion–ejection paradigm from that in place in FR Is is invoked to account for the parsec-scale FR 0 jets. This review revises the state-of-the-art knowledge about FR 0s, their nature, and which open issues the next generation of radio telescopes can solve in this context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The incomplete coverage of the spatial Fourier space, which leads to imaging artifacts, has been troubling radio interferometry for a long time. The currently best technique is to create an image for which the visibility data are Fourier-transformed and to clean the systematic effects originating from incomplete data in Fourier space. We have shown previously how super-resolution methods based on convolutional neural networks can reconstruct sparse visibility data. Aims. The training data in our previous work were not very realistic. The aim of this work is to build a whole simulation chain for realistic radio sources that then leads to an improved neural net for the reconstruction of missing visibilities. This method offers considerable improvements in terms of speed, automatization, and reproducibility over the standard techniques. Methods. We generated large amounts of training data by creating images of radio galaxies with a generative adversarial network that was trained on radio survey data. Then, we applied the radio interferometer measurement equation in order to simulate the measurement process of a radio interferometer. Results. We show that our neural network can faithfully reconstruct images of realistic radio galaxies. The reconstructed images agree well with the original images in terms of the source area, integrated flux density, peak flux density, and the multiscale structural similarity index. Finally, we show that the neural net can be adapted for estimating the uncertainties in the imaging process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio galaxies are a subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in which accretion onto the supermassive black hole releases energy into the environment via relativistic jets. The jets are not constantly active throughout the life of the host galaxy and alternate between active and quiescent phases. Remnant radio galaxies are detected during a quiescent phase and define a class of unique sources that can be used to constrain the AGN duty cycle. We present, for the first time, a spatially resolved radio analysis of the radio galaxy associated with the galaxy NGC 6086 down to 144 MHz and constraints on the spectral age of the diffuse emission to investigate the duty cycle and evolution of the source. We used three new low-frequency, high-sensitivity observations; the first was performed with the Low Frequency Array at 144 MHz and the other two with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 400 MHz and 675 MHz, respectively. To these, we add two Very Large Array archival observations at higher frequencies (1400 and 4700 MHz). In the new observations in the frequency range 144–675 MHz, we detect a second pair of larger lobes and three regions within the remnant emission with a filamentary morphology. We analysed the spectral index trend in the inner remnant lobes and see systematically steeper values (αlow∼1.1–1.3) at the lower frequencies compared to the gigahertz frequencies (αhigh∼0.8–0.9). Steeper spectral indices are found in the newly detected outer lobes (up to αouter∼2.1), as expected if they trace a previous phase of activity of the AGN. However, the differences between the spectra of the two outer lobes suggest different dynamical evolutions within the intra-group medium during their expansion and/or different magnetic field values. Using a single-injection radiative model and assuming equipartition conditions, we place constraints on the age of the inner and outer lobes and derive the duty cycle of the source. We estimate that the duration of the two active phases was 45 Myr and 18 Myr and the duration of the two inactive phases was 66 Myr and 33 Myr. This results in a total active time of ton ∼ 39%. The filamentary structures have a steep spectral index (∼1) without any spectral index trend, and only one of them shows a steepening in the spectrum. Contact. The extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission has completed the first eROSITA All-Sky Survey (eRASS:1). It detected ∼104 galaxy clusters in the western Galactic hemisphere. In the radio band, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope completed its pilot 1 phase of the project Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) with 220 000 sources in a 270 deg2 field overlapping with eRASS:1. These two surveys are used to study radio-mode active galactic nuclei in clusters. Aims. In order to understand the efficiency of radio-mode feedback at the centers of galaxy clusters, we relate the radio properties of the brightest cluster galaxies to the X-ray properties of the host clusters. Methods. We identified the central radio sources in eRASS:1 clusters or calculated corresponding upper limits on the radio luminosity. Then, we derived relations between the X-ray properties of the clusters and the radio properties of the corresponding central radio source. Results. In total, we investigated a sample of 75 clusters. We find a statistically significant correlation between the X-ray luminosity of the cluster and the 944 MHz radio luminosity of the corresponding central radio galaxy. There is also a positive trend between the radio power and the largest linear size of the radio source. The density and the largest linear size are not correlated. We find that the kinetic luminosity of the radio jets in high-luminosity clusters with LX > 1043 erg s−1 is no longer correlated with the X-ray luminosity, and we discuss various reasons. We find an anticorrelation between the central cooling time tcool and the radio luminosity LR, indicating a need for more powerful active galactic nuclei in clusters with short central cooling times. We report the identification of Lyman break galaxy (LBG) candidates around the most luminous hot dust-Obscured galaxy (Hot DOG) known, WISE J224607.56−052634.9 (W2246−0526) at z = 4.601, using deep r-, i-, and z-band imaging from the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph South (GMOS-S). We used the surface density of LBGs to probe the megaparsec-scale environment of W2246−0526 to characterize its richness and evolutionary state. We identified LBG candidates in the vicinity of W2246−0526 using the selection criteria developed in the Subaru Deep Field and in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field, slightly modified to account for the difference between the filters used, and we find 37 and 55 LBG candidates, respectively. Matching to the z-band depths of those studies, this corresponds to δ = 5.8−1.9+2.4 times the surface density of LBGs expected in the field. Interestingly, the Hot DOG itself, as well as a confirmed neighbor, do not satisfy either LBG selection criteria, suggesting we may be missing a large number of companion galaxies. Our analysis shows that we have mostly likely only found those with a higher than average intergalactic medium (IGM) optical depth or moderately high dust obscuration. The number density of LBG candidates is not concentrated around W2246−0526, suggesting an early evolutionary stage for the proto-cluster, that the Hot DOG may not be the most massive galaxy, or that the Hot DOG may be affecting the IGM transparency in its vicinity. The overdensity around W2246−0526 is comparable to overdensities found around other Hot DOGs and is somewhat higher than what is typically found for radio galaxies and luminous quasars at a similar redshift. One of the commonly used non-parametric morphometric statistics for galaxy profiles and images is the asymmetry statistic. With an eye to current and upcoming large neutral hydrogen (H  i) surveys, we develop a 3D version of the asymmetry statistic that can be applied to datacubes. This statistic is more resilient to variations due to the observed geometry than 1D asymmetry measures, and can be successfully applied to lower spatial resolutions (3 – 4 beams across the galaxy major axis) than the 2D statistic. We have also modified the asymmetry definition from an 'absolute difference' version to a 'squared difference' version that removes much of the bias due to noise contributions for low signal-to-noise observations. Using a suite of mock asymmetric cubes we show that the background-corrected, squared difference 3D asymmetry statistic can be applied to many marginally resolved galaxies in large wide-area H  i surveys such as WALLABY on the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). Extragalactic jets are generated as bipolar outflows at the nuclei of active galaxies. Depending on their morphology, they are classified as Fanaroff–Riley type I (FRI) (centre-brightened) and Fanaroff–Riley type II (FRII) (edge-brightened) radio jets. However, this division is not sharp, and observations of these sources at large scales often show intermediate jet morphologies or even hybrid jet morphologies with a FRI type jet on one side and a FRII type jet on the other. A good example of a radio galaxy that is difficult to classify as FRI or FRII is Hercules A. This source shows jets with bright radio lobes (a common feature of FRII type jets) albeit without the hotspots indicative of the violent interaction between the jet and the ambient medium at the impact region, because the jets seem to be disrupted inside the lobes at a distance from the bow shocks surrounding the lobes. In this paper, we explore the jet physics that could trigger this peculiar morphology by means of three-dimensional relativisitic hydrodynamical simulations. Our results show that the large-scale morphological features of Hercules A jets and lobes can be reproduced by the propagation of a relativistically hot plasma outflow that is disrupted by helical instability modes, and generates a hot lobe that expands isotropically against the pressure-decreasing intergalactic medium. We also discuss the implications that this result may have for the host active nucleus in terms of a possible transition from high-excitation to low-excitation galaxy modes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present two- and three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of ∼kpc-scale AGN jets with mean jet powers in the range 1–7 × 1045 erg s−1, in which the jet power varies (through variation of the Lorentz factor) according to a flicker or pink noise power spectrum. We find the morphology and dynamics of the jet–cocoon system depends on the amplitude of the variability with a clear correspondence between the shape of the cocoon and the historical activity. The jet advances quickly during high-power states, whereas quiescent periods instead produce passive periods of inflation resembling Sedov–Taylor blast waves. Periods of high activity preferentially produce hotspots and create stronger backflow as they maximize the pressure gradient between the jet head and cocoon. The variability can also lead to propagating internal shock structures along the jet. Our work suggests that variability and flickering in the jet power has important implications, which we discuss, for observations of radio galaxies, ultrahigh energy cosmic ray acceleration and jet power to luminosity correlations. We explore the link between morphology and fuelling, and suggest that chaotic cold accretion should introduce a relatively small scatter in radio luminosity (∼0.2 dex) and modest imprints on morphology; sources such as Hercules A and Fornax A, which show evidence for more dramatic variability, may therefore require redder power spectra, or be triggered by mergers or other discrete events. We suggest ways to search for jet flickering observationally and propose that radio galaxies may be an important diagnostic of Myr time-scale AGN fuelling, due to their 'long-term memory'. Galaxies exhibiting a specific large-scale extended radio emission, such as X-shaped radio galaxies, belong to a rare class of winged radio galaxies. The morphological evolution of these radio sources is explained using several theoretical models, including galaxy mergers. However, such a direct link between a perturbed radio morphology and a galaxy merger remains observationally sparse. Here, we investigate a unique radio galaxy J1159+5820, whose host CGCG 292-057 displays the optical signature of a post-merger system with a distinct tidal tail feature, and an X-shaped radio morphology accompanied by an additional pair of inner lobes. We observed the target on a wide range of radio frequencies ranging from 147 to 4959 MHz, using dedicated GMRT and VLA observations, and supplemented it with publicly available survey data for broad-band radio analysis. Particle injection models were fitted to radio spectra of lobes and different parts of the wings. Spectral ageing analysis performed on the lobes and the wings favours a fast jet realignment model with a reorientation time-scale of a few million years. Evidence for bright-radio blazars being high-energy neutrino sources was found in recent years. However, specifics of how and where these particles get produced still need to be determined. In this paper, we add 14 new IceCube events from 2020–2022 to update our analysis of the neutrino-blazars connection. We test and refine earlier findings by utilizing the total of 71 track-like high-energy IceCube events from 2009–2022. We correlate them with the complete sample of 3412 extragalactic radio sources selected by their compact radio emission. We demonstrate that neutrinos are statistically associated with radio-bright blazars with a post-trial p -value of 3 · 10−4. In addition to this statistical study, we confirm previous individual neutrino-blazar associations, find and discuss several new ones. Notably, PKS 1741 − 038 was selected earlier and had a second neutrino detected from its direction in 2022; PKS 0735 + 168 has experienced a major flare across the whole electromagnetic spectrum coincidently with a neutrino arrival from that direction in 2021. We present MeerKAT L -band (886–1682 MHz) observations of the extended radio structure of the peculiar galaxy pair PKS 2130−538 known as the 'Dancing Ghosts'. The complex of bending and possibly interacting jets and lobes originate from two active galactic nuclei hosts in the Abell 3785 galaxy cluster, one of which is the brightest cluster galaxy. The radio properties of the PKS 2130−538 – flux density, spectral index, and polarization – are typical for large, bent-tail galaxies. We also investigate a number of thin extended low surface brightness filaments originating from the lobes. South-east from the Dancing Ghosts, we detect a region of low surface brightness emission that has no clear origin. While it could originate from the Abell 3785 radio halo, we investigate the possibility that it is associated with the two PKS 2130−538 hosts. We simultaneously measured the spatially resolved CO-to-H2 conversion factor (αCO) and dust-to-gas ratio (DGR) in nearby galaxies on a kiloparsec scale. In this study, we used 12CO(J  = 1–0) data obtained by the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope with H  i and dust mass surface densities. We obtained the values of global αCO and DGR in 22 nearby spiral galaxies, with averages of 2.66 ± 1.36 M ⊙ pc−2 (K km s−1)−1 and 0.0052 ± 0.0026, respectively. Furthermore, the radial variations of αCO and DGR in four barred spiral galaxies (IC 342, NGC 3627, NGC 5236, and NGC 6946) were obtained by dividing them into inner and outer regions with a boundary of 0.2  R 25, where R 25 is the isophotal radius at 25 mag arcsec−2 in the B band. The averages of αCO and DGR in the inner region (≤0.2  R 25) are 0.36 ± 0.08 M ⊙ pc−2 (K km s−1)−1 and 0.0199 ± 0.0058, while those in the outer region (>0.2  R 25) are 1.49 ± 0.76 M ⊙ pc−2 (K km s−1)−1 and 0.0084 ± 0.0037, respectively. The value of αCO in the outer region is 2.3 to 5.3 times larger than that of the inner region. When separated into the inner and outer regions, we find that αCO and DGR correlate with the metallicity and the star formation rate surface density. The value of αCO derived in this study tends to be smaller than those obtained in previous studies for the Milky Way and nearby star-forming galaxies. This fact can be attributed to our measurements being biased toward the inner region; we measured αCO at 0.85 and 0.76 times smaller in radius than the previous works for nearby star-forming galaxies and the Milky Way, respectively. We report dual-frequency very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at 22 and 43 GHz toward the nucleus of a nearby radio galaxy NGC 4261. In particular, we present a VLBI image of the 22 GHz H2O maser line and its location in the circumnuclear region of NGC 4261. H2O maser emission is marginally detected above the three times the image rms level at channels within a velocity range of approximately 2250–2450 km s−1, slightly red-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity. H2O maser emission is located approximately 1 milliarcsecond east of the brightest continuum component at 22 GHz, where the continuum spectrum is optically thick, that is, at the free–free absorbed receding jet by ionized gas. A positional coincidence between H2O maser emission and an ionized gas disk implies that the H2O maser emission arises from the near side of the disk, amplifying continuum emission from the background receding jet. If the disk axis is oriented 64° relative to the line of sight, the H2O maser emission is expected to be at a mean radius of 0.3 pc in the disk. The broad line width of the H2O maser emission can be attributed to complex kinematics in the immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole (SMBH), including ongoing gas infall on to the SMBH, turbulence, and outflow. This is analogous to the multi-phase circumnuclear torus model in the nearest radio-loud H2O megamaser source NGC 1052. An alternative explanation for H2O maser association is the shock region between the jet and ambient molecular clouds. However, this explanation fails to describe the explicit association of H2O maser emission only with the free–free absorbed receding jet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analytical models describing the dynamics of lobed radio sources are essential for interpretation of the tens of millions of radio sources that will be observed by the Square Kilometre Array and pathfinder instruments. We propose that historical models can be grouped into two classes in which the forward expansion of the radio source is driven by either the jet momentum flux or lobe internal pressure. The most recent generation of analytical models combines these limiting cases for a more comprehensive description. We extend the mathematical formalism of historical models to describe source expansion in non-uniform environments, and directly compare different model classes with each other and with hydrodynamic numerical simulations. We quantify differences in predicted observable characteristics for lobed radio sources due to the different model assumptions for their dynamics. We review the mechanisms driving the ionized gas outflows in radio-quiet (RQ) AGN. Although it constitutes ∼90% of the AGN population, what drives these outflows in these AGNs remains an open question. High-resolution imaging and integral field unit (IFU) observation is key to spatially resolving these outflows, whereas radio observations are important to comprehend the underlying radiative processes. Radio interferometric observations have detected linear, collimated structures on the hundreds of pc scale in RQ AGN, which may be very similar to the extended radio jets in powerful galaxies. Proper motions measured in some objects are sub-relativistic. Other processes, such as synchrotron radiation from shock-accelerated gas around the outflows could give rise to radio emissions as well. Near the launching region, these outflows may be driven by the thermal energy of the accretion disk and exhibit free–free emission. IFU observations on the other hand have detected evidence of both winds and jets and the outflows driven by them in radio-quiet AGN. Some examples include nearby AGN such as Mrk 1044 and HE 1353-1917. An IFU study of nearby (z  < 0.06 ) RQ AGN has found that these outflows may be related to their radio properties on <100 pc scale, rather than their accretion properties. Recent JWST observations of RQ AGN XID 2028 have revealed that radio jets and wind could inflate bubbles, create cavities, and trigger star formation. Future high-resolution multi-wavelength observations and numerical simulations taking account of both jets and winds are hence essential to understand the complex interaction between radio-quiet AGN and the host from sub-pc to kpc scales. The spectral index images of the jet in the nearby radio galaxy M87 have previously been shown with Very Long Baseline Interferometric arrays at 2–43 GHz. They exhibit flattening of the spectra at a location of inner (central) spine and towards outer ridges. This could imply optical depth effects, lower energy cut-off, or stratification of the emitting particles energy distribution. In this paper, we employ simulations of multifrequency VLBI observations of M87 radio jet with various model brightness distributions. CLEAN deconvolution errors produce significant features in the observed images. For intensity images, they result in the appearance of the inner ridge line in the intrinsically edge brightened jet models. For spectral index images, they flatten the spectra in a series of stripes along the jet. Another bias encountered in our simulations is steepening of the spectra in a low surface brightness jet regions. These types of the imaging artefacts do not depend on the model considered. Recent observations of radio relics – diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters – have revealed that these sources are not smooth but consist of structures in the form of threads and filaments. We investigate the origin of these filamentary structures and the role of projection effects. To this end, we have developed a tool that extracts the filamentary structures from background emission. Moreover, it is capable of studying both two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. We apply our structure extractor to both observations and cosmological simulations of radio relics. Using Minkowski functionals, we determine the shape of the identified structures. In our 2D analysis, we find that the brightest structures in the observed and simulated maps are filaments. Our analysis of the 3D simulation data shows that radio relics do not consist of sheets but only of filaments and ribbons. Furthermore, we did not find any measurable projection effect that could hide any sheet-like structures in projection. We find that both the magnetic field and the shock front consist of filaments and ribbons that cause filamentary radio emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jets of energetic particles, as seen in FR type-I and FR type-II sources, ejected from the centre of radio-loud AGN affect the sources surrounding the intracluster medium/intergalactic medium. Placing constraints on the age of such sources is important in order to measure the jet powers and determine the effects on feedback. To evaluate the age of these sources using spectral age models, we require high-resolution multiwavelength data. The new sensitive and high-resolution MIGHTEE survey of the XMM -LSS field, along with data from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) provide data taken at different frequencies with similar resolution, which enables us to determine the spectral age distribution for radio-loud AGN in the survey field. In this study, we present a sample of 28 radio galaxies with their best-fitting spectral age distribution analysed using the Jaffe–Perola (JP) model on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Fits are generally good, and objects in our sample show maximum ages within the range of 2.8 to 115 Myr with a median of 8.71 Myr. High-resolution maps over a range of frequencies are required to observe detailed age distributions for small sources, and high-sensitivity maps will be needed in order to observe fainter extended emission. We do not observe any correlation between the total physical size of the sources and their age, and we speculate that both dynamical models and the approach to spectral age analysis may need some modification to account for our observations. We examine the effect of a jet transversal structure from magnetohydrodynamic semi-analytical modelling on the total intensity profiles of relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei. In order to determine the conditions for forming double- and triple-peaked transverse intensity profiles, we calculate the radiative transfer for synchrotron emission with self-absorption from the jets described by the models with a constant angular velocity and with a total electric current closed inside a jet. We show that double-peaked profiles appear either in the models with high maximal Lorentz factors or in optically thick conditions. We show that triple-peaked profiles in radio galaxies constrain the fraction of the emitting particles in a jet. We introduce the possible conditions for triple-peaked profiles under the assumptions that non-thermal electrons are preferably located at the jet edges or are distributed according to Ohmic heating. We present results from the first 22 GHz space very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) imaging observations of M87 by RadioAstron. As a part of the Nearby AGN Key Science Program, the source was observed in 2014 February at 22 GHz with 21 ground stations, reaching projected (u, v) spacings up to ∼11 G λ. The imaging experiment was complemented by snapshot RadioAstron data of M87 obtained during 2013–2016 from the AGN Survey Key Science Program. Their longest baselines extend up to ∼25 G λ. For all of these measurements, fringes are detected only up to ∼2.8 Earth diameter or ∼3 G λ baseline lengths, resulting in a new image with angular resolution of ∼150 μ as or ∼20 Schwarzschild radii spatial resolution. The new image not only shows edge-brightened jet and counterjet structures down to submilliarcsecond scales but also clearly resolves the VLBI core region. While the overall size of the core is comparable to those reported in the literature, the ground-space fringe detection and slightly superresolved RadioAstron image suggest the presence of substructures in the nucleus, whose minimum brightness temperature exceeds T B , min ∼ 10 12 K. It is challenging to explain the origin of this record-high T B , min value for M87 by pure Doppler boosting effect with a simple conical jet geometry and known jet speed. Therefore, this can be evidence for more extreme Doppler boosting due to a blazar-like small jet viewing angle or highly efficient particle acceleration processes occurring already at the base of the outflow. Simulated galaxy distributions are suitable for developing filament detection algorithms. However, samples of observed galaxies, being of limited size, cause difficulties that lead to a discontinuous distribution of filaments. We created a new galaxy filament catalog composed of a continuous cosmic web with no lone filaments. The core of our approach is a ridge filter used within the framework of image analysis. We considered galaxies from the HyperLeda database with redshifts 0.02 ≤ z ≤ 0.1, and in the solid angle 120° ≤ R.A. ≤ 240°, 0° ≤ decl. ≤ 60°. We divided the sample into 16 two-dimensional celestial projections with redshift bin Δ z = 0.005, and compared our continuous filament network with a similar recent catalog covering the same region of the sky. We tested our catalog on two application scenarios. First, we compared the distributions of the distances to the nearest filament of various astrophysical sources (Seyfert galaxies and other active galactic nuclei, radio galaxies, low-surface-brightness galaxies, and dwarf galaxies), and found that all source types trace the filaments well, with no systematic differences. Next, among the HyperLeda galaxies, we investigated the dependence of the g − r color distribution on the distance to the nearest filament, and confirmed that early-type galaxies are located on average further from the filaments than late-type ones. Traditionally, the far-ultraviolet (FUV) to far-infrared (FIR) and radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies have been considered separately despite the common physical process shaping them. In this work, we explore the utility of simultaneously fitting FUV-radio SEDs using an extended version of the ProSpect SED fitting code considering contributions from both free–free and synchrotron emission. We use a small sample of galaxies from the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) and the Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: a Far-Infrared Survey with Herschel (KINGFISH) where high-quality and robust FUV-radio data are available to provide an ideal sample for testing a radio extension of ProSpect. As the parametrization of the radio extension links the radio continuum to the FIR emission, we explore the benefit of using radio continuum measurements as a constraint on the energy balance between dust attenuation and emission. We find that for situations where mid-IR–FIR photometry is unavailable, including a 1.4 GHz continuum measurement allows for improved accuracy in recovered star formation rates and dust luminosities of galaxies reducing the median uncertainty by 0.1 and 0.2 dex, respectively. We also demonstrate that incorporating 3 and 10 GHz measurements allows for further constraint on the energy balance and therefore the star formation rate and dust luminosity. This demonstrates the advantage of extending FUV–FIR SED fitting techniques to radio frequencies, especially as we move into an era where FIR surveys will remain limited and radio data become abundant (i.e. with the SKA and precursors). As Part I of a paper series showcasing a new imaging framework, we consider the recently proposed unconstrained Sparsity Averaging Reweighted Analysis (uSARA) optimization algorithm for wide-field, high-resolution, high-dynamic range, monochromatic intensity imaging. We reconstruct images from real radio-interferometric observations obtained with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and present these results in comparison to the widely used, state-of-the-art imager WSClean. Selected fields come from the ASKAP Early Science and Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) Pilot surveys and contain several complex radio sources: the merging cluster system Abell 3391-95, the merging cluster SPT-CL 2023-5535, and many extended, or bent-tail, radio galaxies, including the X-shaped radio galaxy PKS 2014-558 and 'the dancing ghosts', known collectively as PKS 2130-538. The modern framework behind uSARA utilizes parallelization and automation to solve for the w -effect and efficiently compute the measurement operator, allowing for wide-field reconstruction over the full field-of-view of individual ASKAP beams (up to ∼3.3° each). The precision capability of uSARA produces images with both super-resolution and enhanced sensitivity to diffuse components, surpassing traditional CLEAN algorithms that typically require a compromise between such yields. Our resulting monochromatic uSARA-ASKAP images of the selected data highlight both extended, diffuse emission and compact, filamentary emission at very high resolution (up to 2.2 arcsec), revealing never-before-seen structure. Here we present a validation of our uSARA-ASKAP images by comparing the morphology of reconstructed sources, measurements of diffuse flux, and spectral index maps with those obtained from images made with WSClean. We present six case studies from a comprehensive mass range (1–109 M⊙) of astrophysical objects, each of which possess jets, emit high-energy gamma radiation and in some instances spatially identifiable ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). All sources are strong candidates for UHECR emission, if not already known to emit them. We surmise that wakefield acceleration in conjunction with the magnetorotational instability of the accretion disc explains both structural properties of the jets and details in their emission signals, such as correlations in neutrino and gamma-ray bursts, and in the case of blazars, anticorrelations in flux and spectral index. Furthermore, our model predicts an upper bound for the energy of UHECRs emitted from a source given the mass of its central compact object and total jet luminosity. To provide context for our model predictions, we quantitatively compare them with observational data, however, we have not accounted for the GZK limit and assumed universal values for several model parameters (e.g. jet-spreading index, p) that likely differ between sources. Since the accretion and acceleration mechanisms are independent of mass, aside from determining maximum values, blazars (∼109 M⊙), radio galaxies (⁠|$\sim 10^8\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|), Seyfert galaxies (⁠|$\sim 10^6 \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|), starburst galaxies (⁠|$\sim 10^{3}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|), even microquasars (1–10 M⊙) interestingly exhibit the same physics. Other radiation bands, such as X-ray, ultraviolet, or radio, may harbour additional information, but we chose not to focus on them for brevity. We present the first measurement of the H  i mass function (HIMF) using data from MeerKAT, based on 276 direct detections from the MeerKAT International GigaHertz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) Survey Early Science data covering a period of approximately a billion years (0 ≤ |$z$| ≤ 0.084). This is the first HIMF measured using interferometric data over non-group or cluster field, i.e. a deep blank field. We constrain the parameters of the Schechter function that describes the HIMF with two different methods: |$1/V_{\rm max}$| and modified maximum likelihood (MML). We find a low-mass slope |$\alpha =-1.29^{+0.37}_{-0.26}$| , 'knee' mass |$\log _{10}(M_{*}/{\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }}) = 10.07^{+0.24}_{-0.24}$| and normalization |$\log _{10}(\phi _{*}/\rm Mpc^{-3})=-2.34^{+0.32}_{-0.36}$| (H 0 = 67.4 km s−1 Mpc−1) for |$1/V_{\rm max}$| , and |$\alpha =-1.44^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$| , 'knee' mass |$\log _{10}(M_{*}/{\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }}) = 10.22^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$| and normalization |$\log _{10}(\phi _{*}/\rm Mpc^{-3})=-2.52^{+0.19}_{-0.14}$| for MML. When using |$1/V_{\rm max}$| we find both the low-mass slope and 'knee' mass to be consistent within 1σ with previous studies based on single-dish surveys. The cosmological mass density of H  i is found to be slightly larger than previously reported: |$\Omega _{\rm H\,{\small I}}=5.46^{+0.94}_{-0.99} \times 10^{-4}\,h^{-1}_{67.4}$| from |$1/V_{\rm max}$| and |$\Omega _{\rm H\,{\small I}}=6.31^{+0.31}_{-0.31} \times 10^{-4}\,h^{-1}_{67.4}$| from MML but consistent within the uncertainties. The discovery of diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters proved the existence of energetic cosmic-ray electrons and cosmic magnetic fields on Mpc-scales in the Universe. Furthermore, both magnetic fields and cosmic-ray electrons are predicted to exist beyond galaxy clusters, namely, in the filaments and voids of the cosmic web. Recent detection of diffuse radio emission in intercluster bridges—the region between two merging clusters—strengthens the theory that both cosmic magnetic fields and cosmic-ray electrons exist on these large scales. Radio observations are our most powerful tool to study cosmic magnetic fields and cosmic-ray electrons in the Universe. The recent improvements in radio astronomy, including the exploration of the low-frequency radio sky, have led to the discovery of countless new radio sources, and hence a new understanding of the origin and evolution of cosmic magnetic fields and cosmic-ray electrons. In this contribution, we summarise the newest discoveries in the field. Furthermore, we discuss what these new radio observations teach us about cosmic magnetic fields and cosmic rays in galaxy clusters and beyond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has been conducted for over 60 yr, yet no technosignatures have been identified. Previous studies have focused on stars in our Galaxy, with few searches in the extragalactic Universe despite a larger volume being available. Civilizations capable of harvesting energy from a star or a galaxy are classified as KII or KIII on the Kardashev scale, respectively. Technosignatures from such advanced civilizations would be extremely luminous and detectable by current radio telescopes, even from distant galaxies. To explore the frontier of extragalactic SETI, we investigate the likely prevalence of extragalactic civilizations possessing a radio transmitter, known as the transmitter rate, based on observational results from the Breakthrough Listen (BL) observations. We calculated the transmitter rate by considering the background galaxies in the field of view of target stars in BL observations. We used a statistical method to derive the total mass of stars in those background galaxies from a galaxy stellar mass function. Our statistical method suggests that less than one in hundreds of trillions of extragalactic civilizations within 969 Mpc possess a radio transmitter above 7.7 × 1026 W of power, assuming one civilization per one-solar-mass stellar system. Additionally, we cross-matched the BL survey fields with the WISE × SuperCOSMOS Photometric Redshift Catalogue and compared with the statistical method. Our result sets the strictest limits to date on the transmitter rate at such high-power levels, emphasizing the high efficiency of searching for radio transmitters in galaxies and the rarity of technologically advanced civilizations in our Universe. We present the first JWST observations of the z  = 4.11 luminous radio galaxy TN J1338–1942, obtained as part of the 'Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science' ('PEARLS') project. Our NIRCam observations, designed to probe the key rest-frame optical continuum and emission line features at this redshift, enable resolved spectral energy distribution modelling that incorporates both a range of stellar population assumptions and radiative shock models. With an estimated stellar mass of log10(M /M⊙) ∼ 10.9, TN J1338–1942 is confirmed to be one of the most massive galaxies known at this epoch. Our observations also reveal extremely high equivalent-width nebular emission coincident with the luminous AGN jets that is best fit by radiative shocks surrounded by extensive recent star formation. We estimate the total star-formation rate (SFR) could be as high as |$\sim 1600\, \text{M}_{\odot }\, \text{yr}^{-1}$| , with the SFR that we attribute to the jet induced burst conservatively |$\gtrsim 500\, \text{M}_{\odot }\, \text{yr}^{-1}$|. The mass-weighted age of the star-formation, t mass < 4 Myr, is consistent with the likely age of the jets responsible for the triggered activity and significantly younger than that measured in the core of the host galaxy. The extreme scale of the potential jet-triggered star-formation activity indicates the potential importance of positive AGN feedback in the earliest stages of massive galaxy formation, with our observations also illustrating the extraordinary prospects for detailed studies of high-redshift galaxies with JWST. The Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) and the VLA survey in the XMM-LSS/VIDEO deep field provide deep (≈15 |$\mu$| Jy beam−1) and high-resolution (≈4.5–8 arcsec) radio coverage of the three XMM-SERVS fields (W-CDF-S, ELAIS-S1, and XMM-LSS). These data cover a total sky area of 11.3 deg2 and contain ≈11 000 radio components. Furthermore, about 3 deg2 of the XMM-LSS field also has deeper MIGHTEE data that achieve a median RMS of 5.6 |$\mu$| Jy beam−1 and detect more than 20 000 radio sources. We analyse all these radio data and find source counterparts at other wavebands utilizing deep optical and infrared (IR) surveys. The nature of these radio sources is studied using radio-band properties (spectral slope and morphology) and the IR–radio correlation. Radio AGNs are selected and compared with those selected using other methods (e.g. X-ray). We found 1656 new AGNs that were not selected using X-ray and/or MIR methods. We constrain the FIR-to-UV SEDs of radio AGNs using cigale and investigate the dependence of radio AGN fraction upon galaxy stellar mass and star formation rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiwavelength studies indicate that nuclear activity and bulge properties are closely related, but the details remain unclear. To study this further, we combine Hubble Space Telescope bulge structural and photometric properties with 1.5 GHz, e -MERLIN nuclear radio continuum data from the LeMMINGs survey for a large sample of 173 'active' galaxies (LINERs and Seyferts) and 'inactive' galaxies (H  ii s and absorption line galaxies, ALGs). Dividing our sample into active and inactive, they define distinct (radio core luminosity)–(bulge mass), |$L_{\rm R,core}-M_{*, \rm bulge}$| , relations, with a mass turnover at |$M_{*, \rm bulge}\sim 10^{9.8 \pm 0.3} \rm { M_{\odot }}$| (supermassive blackhole mass |$M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{6.8 \pm 0.3} \rm M_{\odot }$|), which marks the transition from AGN-dominated nuclear radio emission in more massive bulges to that mainly driven by stellar processes in low-mass bulges. None of our 10/173 bulge-less galaxies host an AGN. The AGN fraction increases with increasing |$M_{*,\rm bulge}$| such that |$f_{\rm optical\_AGN}\propto M_{*,\rm bulge}^{0.24 \pm 0.06}$| and |$f_{\rm radio\_AGN}\propto M_{*,\rm bulge}^{0.24 \pm 0.05}$|. Between |$M_{*,\rm bulge}\sim 10^{8.5}$| and |$10^{11.3} \rm M_{\odot }$| , |$f_{\rm optical\_AGN}$| steadily rises from 15 ± 4 to 80 ± 5 per cent. We find that at fixed bulge mass, the radio loudness, nuclear radio activity, and the (optical and radio) AGN fraction exhibit no dependence on environment. Radio-loud hosts preferentially possess an early-type morphology than radio-quiet hosts, the two types are however indistinguishable in terms of bulge Sérsic index and ellipticity, while results on the bulge inner logarithmic profile slope are inconclusive. We finally discuss the importance of bulge mass in determining the AGN triggering processes, including potential implications for the nuclear radio emission in nearby galaxies. The dichotomy between radio-loud (RL) and radio-quiet (RQ) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is thought to be intrinsically related to radio jet production. This difference may be explained by the presence of a strong magnetic field (B -field) that enhances, or is the cause of, the accretion activity and the jet power. Here we report the first evidence of an intrinsic difference in the polarized dust emission cores of four RL and five RQ obscured AGNs using 89 μ m polarization with SOFIA/HAWC+. We find that the thermal polarized emission increases with the nuclear radio-loudness, R 20 = L 5GHz/ L 20 μ m. The dust emission cores of RL AGNs are measured to be polarized, ∼5%–11%, while RQ AGNs are unpolarized, <1%. For RQ AGNs, our results are consistent with the observed region being filled with an unmagnetized or highly turbulent disk and/or expanding outflow at scales of 5–130 pc from the AGNs. For RL AGNs, the measured 89 μ m polarization arises primarily from magnetically aligned dust grains associated with a 5–130 pc scale dusty obscuring structure with a toroidal B -field orientation highly offset, 65° ± 22°, with respect to the jet axis. Our results indicate that the size and strength of the B -fields surrounding the AGNs are intrinsically related to the strength of the jet power—the stronger the jet power is, the larger and stronger the toroidal B -field is. The detection of a ≤130 pc scale ordered toroidal B -field suggests that (a) the infalling gas that fuels RL AGNs is magnetized, (b) there is a magnetohydrodynamic wind that collimates the jet, and/or (c) the jet is able to magnetize its surroundings. The propagation of active galactic nucleus jets depends both on the environment into which they propagate and on their internal structure. To test the impact that different magnetic topologies have on the observable properties of radio galaxies on kpc scales, we conducted a series of magnetohydrodynamic simulations of jets injected with different magnetic field configurations propagating into a gaseous atmosphere modelled on the Perseus cluster. The simulations show that the structure of the field affects the collimation and propagation of the jets on cluster scales and thus the morphology of the radio lobes inflated by the jets, due to both magnetic collimation and the development of dynamical instabilities in jets with different magnetic topologies. In all cases, the simulations show a distinct reversal of the synchrotron spectral age gradient in the radio lobes about a dynamical time after the jets turn off due to large-scale circulation inside the radio lobe, driven primarily by buoyancy, which could provide a way to constrain the age of radio sources in cluster environments without the need for detailed spectral modelling and thus constrain the radio-mode feedback efficiency. We present a novel natural language processing (NLP) approach to deriving plain English descriptors for science cases otherwise restricted by obfuscating technical terminology. We address the limitations of common radio galaxy morphology classifications by applying this approach. We experimentally derive a set of semantic tags for the Radio Galaxy Zoo EMU (Evolutionary Map of the Universe) project and the wider astronomical community. We collect 8486 plain English annotations of radio galaxy morphology, from which we derive a taxonomy of tags. The tags are plain English. The result is an extensible framework, which is more flexible, more easily communicated, and more sensitive to rare feature combinations, which are indescribable using the current framework of radio astronomy classifications. State-of-the-art radio observatories produce large amounts of data which can be used to study the properties of radio galaxies. However, with this rapid increase in data volume, it has become unrealistic to manually process all of the incoming data, which in turn led to the development of automated approaches for data processing tasks, such as morphological classification. Deep learning plays a crucial role in this automation process and it has been shown that convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can deliver good performance in the morphological classification of radio galaxies. This paper investigates two adaptations to the application of these CNNs for radio galaxy classification. The first adaptation consists of using principal component analysis (PCA) during pre-processing to align the galaxies' principal components with the axes of the coordinate system, which will normalize the orientation of the galaxies. This adaptation led to a significant improvement in the classification accuracy of the CNNs and decreased the average time required to train the models. The second adaptation consists of guiding the CNN to look for specific features within the samples in an attempt to utilize domain knowledge to improve the training process. It was found that this adaptation generally leads to a stabler training process and in certain instances reduced overfitting within the network, as well as the number of epochs required for training. Giant radio sources (GRSs) defined to be >0.7 Mpc are the largest single objects in the Universe and can be associated with both galaxies (GRGs) and quasars (GRQs). They are important for understanding the evolution of radio galaxies and quasars whose sizes range from pc to Mpc scales and are also valuable probes of their environment. These radio-loud active galactic nuclei (RLAGN) interact with the interstellar medium of the host galaxy on small scales and the large-scale intracluster or intergalactic medium for the GRSs. With several new and sensitive surveys over the last few years, the number of known GRSs has increased many fold, which has led a resurgence of interest in the field. This review article summarises our current understanding of these sources based on nearly five decades of research, and discusses the importance of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) in addressing some of the outstanding questions. This paper is an extension of the study by Khamitov et al. (2022) with regard to the catalog and the astrophysical interpretation of the imitation of significant proper motions in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars based on data from the Gaia space observatory. We present a sample of SRG/eROSITA X-ray sources in the eastern Galactic hemisphere () having significant proper motions in the Gaia EDR3 measurements with the confirmed extragalactic nature of the objects. The catalog consists of 248 extragalactic sources with spectroscopically measured redshifts. The catalog includes all of the objects available in the SIMBAD database and coincident with the identified optical counterpart within 0.5 arcsec. Eighteen sources with spectroscopically measured redshifts from observations with the Russian–Turkish 1.5-m telescope RTT-150 (Khamitov et al. 2022) have been additionally included in the catalog. The sources in the catalog are AGNs of various types (Sy1, Sy2, LINER), quasars, radio galaxies, and star-forming galaxies. The imitation of significant proper motions can be explained (by the VIM effect previously known in astrometry) by the presence of transient events on the line of sight in the vicinity of AGNs and quasars (within the Gaia optical resolution element). Among such astrophysical events are supernova outbursts, tidal disruption events in binary AGNs, the variability of high-mass supergiants, the presence of OB associations against the background of AGNs with a variable brightness, etc. The model of outbursts with a fast rise–exponential decay profile allows the variable positional parameters of most sources observed in Gaia to be described. This approach can be used as an independent way of detecting transient events in the vicinity of AGNs (on scales of several hundred parsecs in the plane of the sky) based on data from the SRG/eROSITA catalogs of X-ray sources and the optical Gaia catalog. The discovery of γ - ray emitting Seyfert galaxies has opened a new unified scheme of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in which jetted Seyfert galaxies are viewed as young counterparts of radio loud AGN. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between gamma-ray (γ - ray) properties of jetted Seyfert galaxies and those of traditionally radio galaxies, radio quasars and BL Lac objects. Results show that jetted Seyfert galaxies appear as low luminosity tail of the radio loud AGNs on the luminosity redshift (Lγ – z) plane, indicating an evolutionary link between them. Nevertheless, narrow-line Seyfert galaxies (NLS1s) do not share similar characteristics with Seyfert galaxies as they possess higher luminosities and redshift than Seyfert galaxies, suggestive that NLS1s are more evolved sources. Analyses of γ – ray and radio core-dominance show that for each subclass of jetted AGN, the beaming angle is wider for radio than for γ - ray emissions. While Seyferts and radio galaxies, on average, have similar low inclination to the line of sight, NLS1 objects have orientations similar to quasars and BL Lacs. There is a significant correlation (r ~ 0.7) between the γ - ray core dominance and γ - ray luminosity. The results are consistent with the revised unification scheme and suggests that NLS1s are highly beamed sources whose parent populations can be found among the regular Seyferts and/or radio galaxies [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I review past, current, and future advances on the study of radio-loud AGN (RLAGN; radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies) lifecycles exclusively in the remnant and restarting phases. I focus on their dynamics and energetics as inferred from radio observations while discussing their radiative lifetimes, population statistics, and trends in their physical characteristics. I briefly summarise multi-wavelength observations, particularly X-rays, that have enabled studies of the large-scale environments of RLAGN in order to understand their role in feedback. Furthermore, I discuss analytic and numerical simulations that predict key properties of remnant and restarting sources as found in wide-area surveys, and discuss the prospects of future surveys that may shed further light on these elusive subpopulations of RLAGN. We review the properties of Wide-Angle-Tail (WAT) radio sources. The WAT radio sources are powerful, bent radio sources typically associated with the dominant galaxy in a cluster or group. For the purpose of this review, we define the radio morphology properties of WATs as (1) a sudden jet-tail transition, (2) overall bending of the tails to one side, and (3) non-parallel tails. The mechanism for the rapid jet-tail transition is uncertain but it seems to occur near the transition from the host ISM to ICM. The jet-tail transition may make the jets easier to bend. The narrow range in radio luminosity can be understood if there is a minimum luminosity required to allow the jets to propagate undisturbed for tens of kpc and a maximum luminosity required to allow the jet disruption mechanism to act. WATs are typically hosted by the brightest cluster galaxies in clusters which are currently merging. Thus, WATs can be used as tracers of merging clusters. The merging produces large-scale bulk motions in the ICM which can provide sufficient ram pressure to bend the jets. We suggest that although the Lorentz force may not bend the jets in WATs, it may be relevant in other sources, e.g., protostellar jets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurately determining the black hole mass (M BH) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is crucial to constraining their properties and to studying their evolution. While direct methods yield reliable measurements of M BH in unobscured type 1 AGNs, where the dynamics of stellar or gas components can be directly observed, only indirect methods can be applied to the vast majority of heavily absorbed type 2 AGNs, which represent most of the AGN population. Since it is difficult to evaluate the accuracy and precision of these indirect methods, we utilize the nearby X-ray bright Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, whose M BH has been tightly constrained with several independent direct methods, as a laboratory to assess the reliability of three indirect methods that have been applied to obscured AGNs. All three, the X-ray scaling method, the Fundamental Plane of BH activity, and the M –σ correlation, yield M BH values consistent with those inferred from direct methods and can therefore be considered accurate. However, only the X-ray scaling method and the M –σ correlation are precise because the substantial scatter in the Fundamental Plane of BH activity allows only for crude estimates. Of the four M –σ correlations we used, only the one from Kormendy and Ho yields a value consistent with the dynamical estimates. This study suggests that the best approach to estimating the BH mass in systems where direct dynamical methods cannot be applied is to utilize a combination of indirect methods, taking into account their different ranges of applicability. A comprehensive study of the nucleus and western hotspot of Pictor A is carried out using AstroSat observations, 13 yr of Fermi , and archival Swift observations along with other published data. We report the first detection of the western hotspot of Pictor A in the far-UV band using observations from AstroSat -UVIT. The broad-band SED of the western hotspot is explained by a multizone emission scenario, where X-ray emission is caused by synchrotron emission process in the substructures embedded in the diffuse region, while the emission in radio to optical is caused by synchrotron emission process in the diffuse region. We do not notice any excess in the IR band and an additional zone (beyond 2-zone) is not required to account for the X-ray emission. Our broad-band spectro-temporal study and associated modelling of the core and hotspot of Pictor A suggests that (a) γ-rays originate in the nuclear jet and not from the hotspot (b) X-ray emission from the core of Pictor A has nuclear jet-origin instead of previously reported disc-origin. Damped Lyman-α absorber (DLA), or HI 21cm absorber (H21A), is an important probe to model-independently measure the acceleration of spectroscopic velocity (v S) via the Sandage–Loeb effect. Confined by the shortage of DLAs and background radio sources (BRSs) with adequate information, the detectable amount of DLAs is ambiguous in the bulk of previous work. After differing the acceleration of scale factor (⁠|$\ddot{a}$|⁠) from the first-order time derivative of spectroscopic velocity (⁠|$\dot{v}_\mathrm{S}$|⁠), we make a statistical investigation of the amount of potential DLAs in the most of this paper. Using kernel density estimation to depict general redshift distributions of BRSs, observed DLAs and a DLA detection rate with different limitations (1.4 GHz flux, HI column density, and spin temperature), we provide fitted multiGaussian expressions of the three components and their 1σ regions by bootstrap, with a proportional constant of H21As in detected DLAs, leading to the measurable number predictions of H21As for FAST, ASKAP, and SKA1-Mid in HI absorption blind survey. In our most optimistic condition (F 1.4 GHz > 10 mJy, N HI > 2 × 1020 cm−2, and T S> 500 K), the FAST, AKSAP, and SKA1-Mid would probe about 80, 500, and 600 H21As, respectively. Hotspots of radio galaxies are regions of shock-driven particle acceleration. Multiple hotspots have long been identified as potential indicators of jet movement or precession. Two frequent explanations describe a secondary hotspot as either the location of a prior jet termination point or a deflected backflow-driven shock: the so-called dentist's drill and splatter-spot models. We created high-resolution simulations of precessing jets with a range of parameters. In addition to the existing mechanisms, our results show three additional mechanisms for multiple hotspot formation: (1) the splitting of a large terminal hotspot into passive and active components; (2) jet stream splitting resulting in two active hotspots; and (3) dynamic multiple hotspot complexes that form as a result of jet termination in a turbulent cocoon, linked here to rapid precession. We show that these distinct types of multiple hotspots are difficult to differentiate in synthetic radio maps, particularly hotspot complexes that can easily be mistaken for the jet itself. We discuss the implication for hypothesized binary supermassive black hole systems where jet precession is a key component of the morphology, and show a selection of potential precession candidates found using the Low-Frequency Array Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2.
