Abstract

Globalization is a trend that covers all society perspectives in general, and higher education in particular. The main traditional objective of higher education institutions has been to prepare domestic students with a given set of skills. Research competition and University's rankings, as well as the need to reach other publics, pushed them towards internationalization. The exchange of students across the EU is a well-known reality which success is largely due to cultural similarities. However, a set of issues raises in importance when students from different cultures are involved. ISEP proposed a Summer Course aiming both to increase its level of internationalization and to verify how the institution is able to host foreign students. Therefore was organized, in July 2014, ISEP's first Engineering for Sustainable Development Summer Course, with a layout specifically designed to address those questions. In our study, and in order to gain from an intensive and multicultural experience, the class included equal number of Korean and Portuguese students to develop work under the framework of sustainability, a theme chosen in order to foster consensus. This work reports some results from this experience, which included a Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach, and points out new directions: PBL revealed to be a promoting integration way; the inclusion of multiple cultures allowed the analysis of different perspectives which otherwise would not have been succeed; institutional academic/social services need to be adapted in order to receive non-Portuguese speaking students; there is a need for further adequate accommodation able to receive a larger number of international students.

Abstract

Throughout history as well as the present, food microorganisms have been proven to play a significant role in human life. Some of them appear to contaminate food during storage and cause spoilage. Foodborne microorganisms that do not cause any bad smell and have no taste or surface appearance on food, such as Salmonella spp., Escherichia spp., and Listeria spp., are of particular concern [1]. Because of these characteristics, these microorganisms are the most troublesome, and their presence in food often leads to foodborne outbreaks. To prevent their multiplication, chemical preservatives are usually included as an ingredient in food. Nonetheless, consumers’ demand for more natural and minimally processed food promotes the use of other, more naturally occurring, alternatives. Microorganisms whose metabolites possess antimicrobial properties have been utilized in natural food preservation and introduced to the food industry [2]. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are particularly important and used for this purpose in practice. Their properties are widely studied, and a great number of their metabolites have been identified to possess antimicrobial properties [3]. Most of them include some reuterins, bacteriocins, organic acids, amino acids, monohydroxy fatty acids, exopolysaccharides, etc. [4]. More precisely, reuterins are antimicrobial compounds produced by certain strains of Limosilactobacillus reuteri. Limosilactobacillus reuteri are heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria found in a variety of ecological niches like food fermentations, such as during sourdough and bread production. Reuterins can be found in hydrated, non-hydrated, and dimeric forms of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA), and their free thiol groups are usually related with the antimicrobial potential of reuterins [5].

Abstract

Redox-active covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising electrode materials for metal-ion batteries owing to their tunable electrochemical properties, adjustable structure, and resource availability. Herein, we report a series of two-dimensional tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based COFs incorporating different organic linkers between the electroactive moieties. These COFs were investigated as p-type organic cathode materials for lithium-organic batteries. The electrical conductivity of both neutral and doped TTF-COFs was measured using a van der Pauw setup, and their electronic structures were investigated through quantum-chemical calculations. Binder-free buckypaper TTF-based electrodes were prepared and systematically tested as organic cathodes in lithium half-cells. The results revealed high average discharge potentials (∼3.6 V vs. Li/Li+) and consistent cycling stability (80% capacity retention after 400 cycles at 2C) for the three TTF-COF electrodes. In addition, the specific capacity, rate capability, and kinetics varied depending on the structure of the framework. Our results highlight the potential of TTF-COFs as high-voltage organic cathodes for metal-ion batteries and emphasize the importance of molecular design in optimizing their electrochemical performance. Abstract

Simple Summary: This paper reports the interaction between flavonoids, identified in the chemical matrix of açaí extract, and NLRP3 PYD through computational simulation, as well as the in vitro safety profile and anti-inflammatory effect in macrophages and monocytes of three flavonoids, isolated and combined, via the modulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Inflammation is a vital mechanism that defends the organism against infections and restores homeostasis. However, when inflammation becomes uncontrolled, it leads to chronic inflammation. The NLRP3 inflammasome is crucial in chronic inflammatory responses and has become a focal point in research for new anti-inflammatory therapies. Flavonoids like catechin, apigenin, and epicatechin are known for their bioactive properties (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, etc.), but the mechanisms behind their anti-inflammatory actions remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the ability of various flavonoids (isolated and combined) to modulate the NLRP3 inflammasome using in silico and in vitro models. Computer simulations, such as molecular docking, molecular dynamics, and MM/GBSA calculations examined the interactions between bioactive molecules and NLRP3 PYD. THP1 cells were treated with LPS + nigericin to activate NLRP3, followed by flavonoid treatment at different concentrations. THP1-derived macrophages were also treated following NLRP3 activation protocols. The assays included colorimetric, fluorometric, microscopic, and molecular techniques. The results showed that catechin, apigenin, and epicatechin had high binding affinity to NLRP3 PYD, similar to the known NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950. These flavonoids, particularly at 1 µg/mL, 0.1 µg/mL, and 0.01 µg/mL, respectively, significantly reduced LPS + nigericin effects in both cell types and decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine, caspase-1, and NLRP3 gene expression, suggesting their potential as anti-inflammatory agents through NLRP3 modulation. Abstract

Diffusional limitations associated with zeolite microporous systems can be overcome by developing hierarchical zeolites, i.e., materials with a micro- and mesoporous framework. In this work, Y and ZSM-5 zeolites were modified using a surfactant-mediated hydrothermal alkaline method, with NaOH and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). For Y zeolite, after a mild acidic pretreatment, the effect of the NaOH+CTAB treatment time was investigated. For ZSM-5 zeolite, different concentrations of the base and acid solutions were tested in the two-step pretreatment preceding the hydrothermal treatment. The properties of the materials were studied with different physical–chemical techniques. Hierarchical Y zeolites were characterized by 3.3–5 nm pores formed during the alkaline treatment through the structure reconstruction around the surfactant aggregates. The effectiveness of the NaOH+CTAB treatment was highly dependent on the duration. For intermediate treatment times (6–12 h), both smaller and larger mesopores were also obtained. Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites showed a disordered mesoporosity, mainly resulting from the pretreatment rather than from the subsequent hydrothermal treatment. High mesoporosity was obtained when the concentration of the pretreating base solution was sufficiently high and that of the acid one was not excessive. Hierarchical materials can be obtained for both zeolite structures, but the pretreatment and treatment conditions must be tailored to the starting zeolite and the desired type of mesoporosity. Abstract

The reactivity of Zn2+ tetrahedral complexes with H2O2 was investigated in silico, as a first step in their disruption process. The substrates were chosen to represent the cores of three different zinc finger protein motifs, i. e., a Zn2+ ion coordinated to four cysteines (CCCC), to three cysteines and one histidine (CCCH), and to two cysteines and two histidines (CCHH). The cysteine and histidine ligands were further simplified to methyl thiolate and imidazole, respectively. H2O2 was chosen as an oxidizing agent due to its biological role as a metabolic product and species involved in signaling processes. The mechanism of oxidation of a coordinated cysteinate to sulfenate‐κS and the trends for the different substrates were rationalized through activation strain analysis and energy decomposition analysis in the framework of scalar relativistic Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations at ZORA‐M06/TZ2P ae // ZORA‐BLYP‐D3(BJ)/TZ2P. CCCC is oxidized most easily, an outcome explained considering both electrostatic and orbital interactions. The isomerization to sulfenate‐κO was attempted to assess whether this step may affect the ligand dissociation; however, it was found to introduce a kinetic barrier without improving the energetics of the dissociation. Lastly, ligand exchange with free thiolates and selenolates was investigated as a trigger for ligand dissociation, possibly leading to metal ejection; molecular docking simulations also support this hypothesis. 200. Data Mining Paths for Standard Weekly Training Load in Sub-Elite Young Football Players: A Machine Learning Approach.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to test a machine learning (ML) model to predict high-intensity actions and body impacts during youth football training. Sixty under-15, -17, and -19 sub-elite Portuguese football players were monitored over a 6-week period. External training load data were collected from the target variables of accelerations (ACCs), decelerations (DECs), and dynamic stress load (DSL) using an 18 Hz global positioning system (GPS). Additionally, we monitored the perceived exertion and biological characteristics using total quality recovery (TQR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), session RPE (sRPE), chronological age, maturation offset (MO), and age at peak height velocity (APHV). The ML model was computed by a feature selection process with a linear regression forecast and bootstrap method. The predictive analysis revealed that the players' MO demonstrated varying degrees of effectiveness in predicting their DEC and ACC across different ranges of IQR. After predictive analysis, the following performance values were observed: DEC ( x ¯ predicted = 41, β = 3.24, intercept = 37.0), lower IQR (IQRpredicted = 36.6, β = 3.24, intercept = 37.0), and upper IQR (IQRpredicted = 46 decelerations, β = 3.24, intercept = 37.0). The player's MO also demonstrated the ability to predict their upper IQR (IQRpredicted = 51, β = 3.8, intercept = 40.62), lower IQR (IQRpredicted = 40, β = 3.8, intercept = 40.62), and ACC ( x ¯ predicted = 46 accelerations, β = 3.8, intercept = 40.62). The ML model showed poor performance in predicting the players' ACC and DEC using MO (MSE = 2.47–4.76; RMSE = 1.57–2.18: R2 = −0.78–0.02). Maturational concerns are prevalent in football performance and should be regularly checked, as the current ML model treated MO as the sole variable for ACC, DEC, and DSL. Applying ML models to assess automated tracking data can be an effective strategy, particularly in the context of forecasting peak ACC, DEC, and bodily effects in sub-elite youth football training.
