Abstract: We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g 1 d of the deuteron in deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarised muons on polarised deuterons, in the kinematic range 0.003 x 2 Q 2 2 . This structure function is found to be negative at small x . The first moment Γ 1 d =∫ 0 1 g 1 d d x evaluated at Q 0 2 = 10 GeV 2 is 0.034 ± 0.009 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.). This value is below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction by three standard deviations. Using our earlier determination of Γ 1 p , we obtain Γ 1 p − Γ 1 n = 0.199 ± 0.038 which agrees with the Bjorken sum rule.

Abstract: A new measurement of the differential cross section and of the analysing power A0n of the charge-exchange reaction p − p → n − n at 875 MeV/c is presented. The A0n data cover the entire angular range and constitute a considerable improvement over previously published data, both in the forward and in the backward hemisphere. The cross-section data cover only the backward region, but are unique at this energy. A careful study of the long-term drifts of the apparatus has allowed to fully exploit the good statistics of the data.

Abstract: We analyse the proton, deuteron and neutron spin dependent structure functions at fixed $Q^{2}$ = 5 GeV$^{2}$. The experimental asymmetries for the proton, neutron and deuteron are compared and found to be consistent. The first moment of the neutron structure function is evaluated using all available data. We find that the Bjorken sum rule is confirmed within an experimental uncertainty of 17%. The quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin is small, and the strange quark spin content is different from zero.

Abstract: Two modular antineutron detectors have been built and used to detect the low energy antineutrons produced in the charge-exchange reaction p̄p → n̄n in an experiment at LEAR. A novel calibration method has been used to measure the absolute efficiencies of the detectors, and allows for a precise measurement of the reaction differential cross-section.

Abstract: The 10-probe NMR system for measuring the polarization in the deuterated butanol target of the Spin Muon Collaboration is presented. It is calibrated by determining the integrated spectrum in thermal equilibrium at 1 K. Thermal stabilization and control of electromagnetic interference were effective in reducing drift and electronic noise, so that high quality thermal equilibrium signals were obtained. The calibration constant was determined with a reproducibility of 2%. Systematic effects of circuit drift and of the magnetic field shift have been studied. The resulting 4.4% uncertainty of the calibration dominates the 5% overall error on the target polarization value which was typically 0.45.

Abstract: The aim of the experiment PS199 was to study the spin structure of the charge-exchange pp → nn channel at LEAR. During 1990 we collected data at several energies to measure the analyzing power Aon and the spin depolarization parameter Donon.Results for Aon at all energies and first results for Donon at 905 MeV/c incident antiproton momentum are presented.

Abstract: The development of a large size gaseous detector of single photons, able to stably operate at high gain and high rate, and to provide good time resolution and insensitivity to magnetic field would be beneficial to future Cherenkov Imaging Counters. The detector could be based on the use of a multilayer architecture of THGEM electron multipliers coupled to a solid state CsI photocathode. A systematic study of the response of THGEM-based counters versus the geometrical parameters has been performed and the main results will be presented. Small photon detector prototypes have been built and preliminary data obtained detecting single photoelectrons are presented as well. The key aspect of photoelectron extraction from the photocathode is illustrated presenting both simulation and dedicated measurement results. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA

Abstract: Results are given for the analysing power of the p p→ n n charge-exchange reaction at four incident beam momenta. The measurement is part of an experimental programme to study the spin structure of this reaction at LEAR. The analyzing power shows strong angular and energy dependence, which at present is not reproduced by the existing meson-exchange potential models.

Abstract: We describe a new polarized-proton and -antiproton beam with 185-GeV/c momentum in the Fermilab MP beam line which is currently operational. The design uses the parity-conserving decay of lambda and antilambda hyperons to produce polarized protons and antiprotons, respectively. A beam-transport system minimizes depolarization effects and uses a set of 12 dipole magnets that rotate the beam-particle spin direction. A beam-tagging system determines the momentum and polarization of individual beam particles, allowing a selection of particles in definite intervals at momentum and polarization. We measured polarization of the beam by using two types of polarimeters, which verified the determination of polarization by a beam-particle tagging system. Two of these processes are the inverse-Primakoff effect and the Coulomb-nuclear interference (CNI) in elastic proton-proton scattering. Another experiment measured the {pi}{sup 0} production asymmetry of large-x{sub F} values; this process may now be used as an on-line beam polarimeter. 9 refs., 9 figs.

Abstract: The polarization parameter ApCC in antiproton — carbon elastic scattering at small angles has been measured at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN, as part of the program of experiment PS1721,2. The measurement was carried out to investigate the possibility of polarizing the antiprotons by scattering off nuclear targets and of analysing the p polarization by means of a carbon polarimeter; these techniques turned out to be very useful in the systematic study of the nucleon — nucleon interactions, because of the large analysing power of carbon for protons at small angles (≃0.4 at 10° for 800 MeV/c incident protons). First calculations using Glauber theory3 suggested for ppC elastic scattering a polarization parameter considerably smaller than for proton scattering, but the uncertainty of the calculation, mainly due to lack of precise ppp and ppn scattering data, was large, suggesting the measurement of ACC at LEAR. A further motivation to perform the experiment, which is independent of the magnitude of the analysing power, was to get information on the antiproton — neutron spin amplitudes, as pointed out by Osland and Glauber for the proton case4.

Abstract: Two high statistics measurements of antiproton-proton small-angle elastic scattering, at p = 233 MeV/c and p = 272 MeV/c, are presented. The measurements were carried out at the LEAR facility at CERN. By the Coulomb-nuclear interference method, values are obtained for the real-to-imaginary ratio ρ of the pp forward nuclear scattering amplitude and for its exponential slope b: ρ = + 0.041 ± 0.026 and b = 71.5 ± 4.5 (GeV/c)−2 at 233 MeV/c and ρ = −0.014 ± 0.027 and b = 47.7 ± 2.7 (GeV/c)−2 at 272 MeV/c. The method to derive these values is discussed in detail and so are the uncertainties contributing to their systematic error. The results are compared with predictions from forward dispersion relation calculations and with predictions from pp potential models.

Abstract: Analysing power and differential cross-section have been measured for the reactions p p →π − π + , p p →K − K + by the SING Collaboration (PS172) at LEAR, using a polarized target. Preliminary results of Aon are presented, at 12 momenta from 500 to 1500 MeV/c. They show very large asymmetries, and a remarkable variation with energy in the newly explored low momentum region.

Abstract: The pion-nucleon backward scattering data at 3.5 GeV/ c are fitted with two Regge-type models which were first used at 6 GeV/ c : a good description of the data is obtained; however the parameters differ significantly from those at 6 GeV/ c . A simultaneous fit at 3.5 and 6 GeV/ c can be made with N α and N γ Regge amplitudes, if the non-Regge terms are fitted with separate sets of parameters at each energy.

Abstract: Measurements have been made of the differential cross section and asymmetry Aon for pp elastic scattering at 15 incident momenta between 497 MeV/c and 1550 MeV/c. The angular range where both particles have enough energy to traverse target and setup has been covered. The results are compared with predictions of various NN potential models. None of these models fully explains the present results, although the general trend of the data is predicted correctly.

Abstract: We have measured the polarization parameter in π − p→K + Σ − backward scattering at 3.5 GeV/ c incident momentum, in the u -range −0.6 u 2 . The apparatus consisted of a polarized target in a spectrometer magnet, counter hodoscopes for time-of-flight measurements, a large water Cerenkov counter for kaon tagging, and wire spark chambers. After identification of the kaons, the reaction was selected by a missing-mass technique. An isospin analysis has been carried out to separate the contributions of the various isospin exchange amplitudes in the u -channel.

Abstract: The longitudinal polarisation transfer from muons to lambda and anti-lambda hyperons, D_LL, has been studied in deep inelastic scattering off an unpolarised isoscalar target at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The spin transfers to lambda and anti-lambda produced in the current fragmentation region exhibit different behaviours as a function of x and xF . The measured x and xF dependences of D^lambda_LL are compatible with zero, while D^anti-lambda_LL tends to increase with xF, reaching values of 0.4 - 0.5. The resulting average values are D^lambda_LL = -0.012 +- 0.047 +- 0.024 and D^anti-lambda_LL = 0.249 +- 0.056 +- 0.049. These results are discussed in the frame of recent model calculations.

Abstract: First measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hadron-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised ^6LiD (deuteron) and NH_3 (proton) targets are presented. The data were taken in the years 2002-2004 and 2007 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/c at the CERN SPS. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity distribution functions, without involving the Collins effect as in single hadron production. The sizeable asymmetries measured on the NH_ target indicate non-vanishing u-quark transversity and two-hadron interference fragmentation functions. The small asymmetries measured on the ^6LiD target can be interpreted as indication for a cancellation of u- and d-quark transversities., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, updated to the published version

Abstract: The polarization parameter in pp elastic scattering at 150 GeV/c, and in the momentum transfer interval 0.4 ⩽ −t ⩽ 3.0 GeV2, has been measured in an MWPC and scintillation counter experiment at the CERN SPS using a polarized proton target. The polarization is decreasing steadily from zero to ≈ − 10% in the range 0.4 < −t < 1.3 GeV2; for higher |t| the data suggests a change of sign. Results are also given for the differential cross section, which exhibits a small dip at −t = (1.46 ± 0.01) GeV.

Abstract: A set of proportional wire chambers is used in an elastic scattering experiment to measure direction and momentum of recoil particles using the magnetic field of a polarized target assembly. This recoil spectrometer has been operated satisfactorily at high rates and it has been implemented in a fast decision system to improve the trigger selection. Construction criteria and performances of this detector are discussed.

Abstract: We describe the prototype of a target sensitive to low energy protons suitable for the study of high energy elastic scattering in the small momentum transfer region. It consists of a set of thin plastic scintillator slices, separated in space and optically coupled to individual photomultipliers. We report the performance of this device in measuring πp elastic scattering in the momentum transfer region between −0.012 and −0.004 GeV2 at 4 GeV/c in a π− beam at the CERN PS.

Abstract: A double-scattering experiment of antiprotons on carbon has been carried out at the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN, to measure the polarization parameter A p C in antiproton-carbon elastic scattering at small angles. The polarization parameter has been inferred from the azimuthal distribution of the antiprotons after the second scattering. Data have also been collected with a liquid-hydrogen target as the second scatterer, thus allowing the sign of A p C to be determined. The experiment has been performed at two momenta of the extracted antiproton beam, 800 and 1100 MeV/c. A small positive value of the polarization has been observed, compatible with energy independence and a linear increase with the momentum transfer q. Parametrizing A p C as acq, we get ac = +0.72 0.10+0.09(GeV/c)−1. This result is compared with potential model predictions for NN amplitudes through a Glauber theory calculation.

Abstract: The ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the pp forward elastic-scattering amplitude ϱ has been measured at 550, 757, and 1077 MeV/c at LEAR, using the Coulomb-nuclear interference method. The results obtained for ρ and b, the nuclear slope, are ϱ = 0.084 ± 0.051 and b = 20.9 ± 2.1 (GeV/c)−2 at 550 MeV/c, ϱ = 0.102 ± 0.043 and b = 18.0 ± 0.5 (GeV/c)−2 = at 757 MeV/c, and ϱ = 0.059 ± 0.035 and b = 15.2 ± 0.3 (GeV/c)−2 at 1077 MeV/c.

Abstract: Measurement of polarization in pp elastic scattering in the Coulomb interference region is considered as a valid method for calibrating high energy polarized proton beams. Possibility of using a scintillation target to detect low energy recoil protons in this |t| region has been studied by using a 4 GeV/c π- beam from CERN PS. The results obtained with a stack of thin plastic scintillators, each 1 mm thick, showed the feasibility of detecting recoil protons in a |t| range as low as ~5×10-3 (GeV/c)2.

Abstract: The polarization parameter P(t) in pp elastic scattering at 150 GeV/c for momentum transfers 0.2 < −t < 3 GeV;2 has been measured in a t-region where a dip in the cross-section for elastic proton-proton scattering has been observed at the ISR energies. To have a good background rejection, also at high t values with a cross-section of ∿10 nb GeV−2, we needed precise measurements and redundancy in the determination of the kinematics of the reaction. This was achieved with a well collimated beam and by measuring momentum and direction of both outgoing particles in two spectrometers equipped with MWPCs and scintillator hodoscopes (Fig. 1).

Abstract: A well known technique for polarizing a proton beam consists by scattering it off some material, typically carbon. The use of such a method has been proposed(1) also for polarizing antiprotons at LEAR, and it is now part of the program of Experiment PS 172. Here we give a brief review of how one can obtain an estimate of the polarization parameter in pC scattering, a description of the beam which has actually been designed, and a first list of the measurements we plan to do with such a beam.

Abstract: pp total cross sections have been measured from 220 to 413 MeV/ c in small (⩽ 10 MeV/ c ) steps of momentum with statistics of ± 0.5 %. There is no evidence for structure in the cross section, and a limit of 8 mb MeV/ c 2 is set with 90% confidence on the strength of any narrow resonance down to 250 MeV/ c .

Abstract: In the beginning of 1980 four letters of intent for experiments at LEAR had been submitted which all proposed to study either pp total cross section or spin effects in pp (elastic) scattering or both. The people who wrote these letters were asked to work together and to submit one proposal covering all the experiments mentioned in the original letter of intent. The proposal resulting from this effort suggests to do a wide range of experiments using a rather complicated set up.

Abstract: The elastic scattering of protons and pions on polarized protons has been measured at 150 and 200 GeV/c, in a momentum transfer region still dominated by diffraction. The pp cross-section (spin-averaged) develops a dip at |t| ≅ 1.5 GeV2 which becomes more important as the energy increases. The (negative) polarization, which steadily increases from zero at t = -0.4 GeV2, reaches 10–15%; in the dip region a zero-crossing to positive values seems to take place. The π+p polarization has a similar t-dependence, while the cross-section shows no dip structure.

Abstract: Experiment PS206 has measured with high precision the differential p̄p → n̄n cross-section at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring. First results have already been published for the forward region, based on part of the collected statistics. Now the whole 601 MeV/c sample has been analysed and the new results are presented both for the forward hemisphere and for the backward region. The crucial tasks of the efficiency measurement and the studies of the systematic effects, that limit the precision of the measurement, are also discussed.

Abstract: Cherenkov imaging counters requiring large photosensitive areas, the capability to stand high rates and to operate in magnetic field environments could benefit from the use of micropattern gas detectors based on THick Gaseous Electron Multiplier (THGEM) coupled to a solid state CsI photo-cathode. Nevertheless, the ions produced in the charge multiplication processes, which end up in the CsI photocathode Ion Back Flow (IBF) compromise the detector performance: fast ageing of the CsI photocathode, as well as electron extraction resulting in spurious signals and eventual discharges can occur. To avoid and limit these undesired events, several configurations of THGEM based detectors were considered. Some changing the whole detector geometry by changing the relative position of individual THGEMs to take advantage of the microscopic diffusion properties of electrons and ions. One other configuration changing directly the geometry of the THGEM itself to better create an ion trap, the THCOBRA, is also studied. In this work, experimental and simulation studies of these configurations is performed, particularly concerning IBF and gain. Finite element method calculations and Monte-Carlo simulations are performed for a better understanding of the results.
