Abstract

A critically important process affecting the climate evolution and potential habitability of an exoplanet is atmospheric escape, in which high-energy radiation from a star drives the escape of hydrogen atoms and other light elements from a planet's atmosphere. L 98-59 is a benchmark system for studying such atmospheric processes, with three transiting terrestrial-size planets receiving Venus-like instellations (4-25 S$_\oplus$) from their M3 host star. We use the VPLanet model to simulate the evolution of the L 98-59 system and the atmospheric escape of its inner three small planets, given different assumed initial water quantities. We find that, regardless of their initial water content, all three planets accumulate significant quantities of oxygen due to efficient water photolysis and hydrogen loss. All three planets also receive enough XUV flux to drive rapid water loss, which considerably affects their developing climates and atmospheres. Even in scenarios of low initial water content, our results suggest that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be sensitive to observations of retained oxygen on the L 98-59 planets in its future scheduled observations, with planets b and c being the most likely targets to possess an extended atmosphere. Our results constrain the atmospheric evolution of these small rocky planets, and they provide context for current and future observations of the L 98-59 system to generalize our understanding of multi-terrestrial planet systems., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

Missing data are frequently observed by practitioners and researchers in the building energy modeling community. In this regard, advanced data-driven solutions, such as Deep Learning methods, are typically required to reflect the non-linear behavior of these anomalies. As an ongoing research question related to Deep Learning, a model's applicability to limited data settings can be explored by introducing prior knowledge in the network. This same strategy can also lead to more interpretable predictions, hence facilitating the field application of the approach. For that purpose, the aim of this paper is to propose the use of Physics-informed Denoising Autoencoders (PI-DAE) for missing data imputation in commercial buildings. In particular, the presented method enforces physics-inspired soft constraints to the loss function of a Denoising Autoencoder (DAE). In order to quantify the benefits of the physical component, an ablation study between different DAE configurations is conducted. First, three univariate DAEs are optimized separately on indoor air temperature, heating, and cooling data. Then, two multivariate DAEs are derived from the previous configurations. Eventually, a building thermal balance equation is coupled to the last multivariate configuration to obtain PI-DAE. Additionally, two commonly used benchmarks are employed to support the findings. It is shown how introducing physical knowledge in a multivariate Denoising Autoencoder can enhance the inherent model interpretability through the optimized physics-based coefficients. While no significant improvement is observed in terms of reconstruction error with the proposed PI-DAE, its enhanced robustness to varying rates of missing data and the valuable insights derived from the physics-based coefficients create opportunities for wider applications within building systems and the built environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in Energy and Buildings

Abstract

Model-based clustering is a powerful tool that is often used to discover hidden structure in data by grouping observational units that exhibit similar response values. Recently, clustering methods have been developed that permit incorporating an ``initial'' partition informed by expert opinion. Then, using some similarity criteria, partitions different from the initial one are down weighted, i.e. they are assigned reduced probabilities. These methods represent an exciting new direction of method development in clustering techniques. We add to this literature a method that very flexibly permits assigning varying levels of uncertainty to any subset of the partition. This is particularly useful in practice as there is rarely clear prior information with regards to the entire partition. Our approach is not based on partition penalties but considers individual allocation probabilities for each unit (e.g., locally weighted prior information). We illustrate the gains in prior specification flexibility via simulation studies and an application to a dataset concerning spatio-temporal evolution of ${\rm PM}_{10}$ measurements in Germany., Comment: 54 pages, 25 figures

Abstract

The launch of JWST has ushered in a new era of high precision infrared astronomy, allowing us to probe nearby white dwarfs for cold dust, exoplanets, and tidally heated exomoons. While previous searches for these exoplanets have successfully ruled out companions as small as 7-10 Jupiter masses, no instrument prior to JWST has been sensitive to the likely more common sub-Jovian mass planets around white dwarfs. In this paper, we present the first multi-band photometry (F560W, F770W, F1500W, F2100W) taken of WD 2149+021 with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on JWST. After a careful search for both resolved and unresolved planets, we do not identify any compelling candidates around WD 2149+021. Our analysis indicates that we are sensitive to companions as small as ~0.34 MJup outwards of 1."263 (28.3 au) and ~0.64 MJup at the innermost working angle (0."654, 14.7 au) with 5 sigma confidence, placing significant constraints on any undetected companions around this white dwarf. The results of these observations emphasize the exciting future of sub-Jovian planet detection limits by JWST, which can begin to constrain how often these planets survive their host stars evolution.

Abstract

The KM3NeT neutrino telescope is currently being deployed at two different sites in the Mediterranean Sea. First searches for astrophysical neutrinos have been performed using data taken with the partial detector configuration already in operation. The paper presents the results of two independent searches for neutrinos from compact binary mergers detected during the third observing run of the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave interferometers. The first search looks for a global increase in the detector counting rates that could be associated with inverse beta decay events generated by MeV-scale electron anti-neutrinos. The second one focuses on upgoing track-like events mainly induced by muon (anti-)neutrinos in the GeV--TeV energy range. Both searches yield no significant excess for the sources in the gravitational wave catalogs. For each source, upper limits on the neutrino flux and on the total energy emitted in neutrinos in the respective energy ranges have been set. Stacking analyses of binary black hole mergers and neutron star-black hole mergers have also been performed to constrain the characteristic neutrino emission from these categories., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We explore the utilization of the Apache TVM open source framework to automatically generate a family of algorithms that follow the approach taken by popular linear algebra libraries, such as GotoBLAS2, BLIS and OpenBLAS, in order to obtain high-performance blocked formulations of the general matrix multiplication (GEMM). % In addition, we fully automatize the generation process, by also leveraging the Apache TVM framework to derive a complete variety of the processor-specific micro-kernels for GEMM. This is in contrast with the convention in high performance libraries, which hand-encode a single micro-kernel per architecture using Assembly code. % In global, the combination of our TVM-generated blocked algorithms and micro-kernels for GEMM 1)~improves portability, maintainability and, globally, streamlines the software life cycle; 2)~provides high flexibility to easily tailor and optimize the solution to different data types, processor architectures, and matrix operand shapes, yielding performance on a par (or even superior for specific matrix shapes) with that of hand-tuned libraries; and 3)~features a small memory footprint., Comment: 35 pages, 22 figures. Abstract

Neuromorphic computing relies on spike-based, energy-efficient communication, inherently implying the need for conversion between real-valued (sensory) data and binary, sparse spiking representation. This is usually accomplished using the real valued data as current input to a spiking neuron model, and tuning the neuron's parameters to match a desired, often biologically inspired behaviour. We developed a tool, the WaLiN-GUI, that supports the investigation of neuron models and parameter combinations to identify suitable configurations for neuron-based encoding of sample-based data into spike trains. Due to the generalized LIF model implemented by default, next to the LIF and Izhikevich neuron models, many spiking behaviors can be investigated out of the box, thus offering the possibility of tuning biologically plausible responses to the input data. Abstract

We propose a new Perturbation Theory framework that can be used to help with the projective solution of the Schr\"odinger equation for arbitrary wavefunctions. This Flexible Ansatz for N-body Perturbation Theory (FANPT) is based on our previously proposed Flexible Ansatz for N-body Configuration Interaction (FANCI). We derive recursive FANPT expressions including arbitrary orders in the perturbation hierarchy. We show that the FANPT equations are well-behaved across a wide range of conditions, including static correlation-dominated configurations and highly non-linear wavefunctions.

Abstract

Electron pairs have an illustrious history in chemistry, from powerful concepts to understanding structural stability and reactive changes, to the promise of serving as building blocks of quantitative descriptions of the electronic structure of complex molecules and materials. However, traditionally, two-electron wavefunctions (geminals), have not enjoyed the popularity and widespread use of the more standard single-particle methods. This has changed recently, with a renewed interest in the development of geminal wavefunctions as an alternative to describing strongly-correlated phenomena. Hence, there is a need to find geminal methods that are accurate, computationally-tractable, and do not demand significant input from the user (particularly, via cumbersome and often ill-behaved orbital optimization steps). Here we propose new families of geminal wavefunctions, inspired by the pair Coupled Cluster (pCCD) ansatz. We present a new hierarchy of two-electron wavefunctions that extend the one-reference orbital idea to other geminals. Moreover, we show how to incorporate single-like excitations in this framework, without leaving the quasiparticle picture. We explore the role of imposing seniority restrictions on these wavefunctions, and benchmark these new methods on model strongly-correlated systems.

Regression is one of the most fundamental statistical inference problems. A broad definition of regression problems is as estimation of the distribution of an outcome using a family of probability models indexed by covariates. Despite the ubiquitous nature of regression problems and the abundance of related methods and results there is a surprising gap in the literature. There are no well established methods for regression with a varying dimension covariate vectors, despite the common occurrence of such problems. In this paper we review some recent related papers proposing varying dimension regression by way of random partitions.

We provide an inductive proof of Borchardt's theorem for calculating the permanent of a Cauchy matrix via the determinants of auxiliary matrices. This result has implications for antisymmetric products of interacting geminals (APIG), and suggests that the restriction of the APIG coefficients to Cauchy form (typically called APr2G) is special in its tractability.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The three-item Sexual Distress Scale (SDS-3) has been frequently used to assess distress related to sexuality in public health surveys and research on sexual wellbeing. However, its psychometric properties and measurement invariance across cultural, gender and sexual subgroups have not yet been examined. This multinational study aimed to validate the SDS-3 and test its psychometric properties, including measurement invariance across language, country, gender identity, and sexual orientation groups. METHODS: We used global survey data from 82,243 individuals (Mean age=32.39 years; 40.3 % men, 57.0 % women, 2.8 % non-binary, and 0.6 % other genders) participating in the International Sexual Survey (ISS; https://internationalsexsurvey.org/) across 42 countries and 26 languages. Participants completed the SDS-3, as well as questions regarding sociodemographic characteristics, including gender identity and sexual orientation. RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported a unidimensional factor structure for the SDS-3, and multi-group CFA (MGCFA) suggested that this factor structure was invariant across countries, languages, gender identities, and sexual orientations. Cronbachs α for the unidimensional score was 0.83 (range between 0.76 and 0.89), and McDonalds ω was 0.84 (range between 0.76 and 0.90). Participants who did not experience sexual problems had significantly lower SDS-3 total scores (M = 2.99; SD=2.54) compared to those who reported sexual problems (M = 5.60; SD=3.00), with a large effect size (Cohens d = 1.01 [95 % CI=-1.03, -0.98]; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The SDS-3 has a unidimensional factor structure and appears to be valid and reliable for measuring sexual distress among individuals from different countries, gender identities, and sexual orientations.

BackgroundDomains of adequate menstrual health (MH) include access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). People who menstruate with social disadvantages-such as homelessness or drug injection practices-often face barriers to WASH access. However, validated instruments to measure MH are limited among marginalized populations, and available instruments involve lengthy surveys. We developed and evaluated psychometric properties of a novel 'MH WASH Domain Scale-12' among people who menstruate and who inject drugs in the Tijuana-San Diego region and identified correlates of MH access using this scale.MethodsWe constructed a MH-scale based on access to twelve WASH-related items: (1) menstrual products, (2) body hygiene (bathing per week), (3) water sources for bathing, (4) improved, (5) non-shared, (6) available, (7) private, (8) nearby, (9) and safe sanitation facilities, (10) availability of soap, (11) water source for handwashing, and (12) handwashing facilities with soap/water. Variables were dichotomized and summed, with scores ranging from 0-12 points and higher scores indicating better MH access. We assessed the scale's reliability and construct and content validity using data from a binational cross-sectional study. The sample included people who inject drugs (PWID) who had ever menstruated in their lifetime and were 18+ during 2020-2021. MH-WASH items were described, and the scale was further used as an outcome variable to identify correlates.ResultsAmong 125 (124 cis-female and 1 trans-male) PWID that reported menstruating, our 'MH WASH Domain Scale-12' was reliable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.81, McDonald's Omega total = 0.83) and valid. We identified two sub-domains: Factor-1 included items describing 'WASH availability' and Factor-2 contained items related to 'WASH security'-encompassing physical and biological safety. Scale scores were significantly lower among participants experiencing unsheltered homelessness compared to participants experiencing sheltered homelessness or living in permanent housing.ConclusionWe constructed and validated a novel and reliable scale to measure MH-related WASH access that can be used to assess MH among marginalized populations in English- and Spanish-speaking contexts. Using this scale we identified disparities in MH-WASH access among PWID and who menstruate in the US-Mexico border region.

Abstract

BackgroundWater, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) access is critical to public health and human dignity. People who inject drugs (PWID) experience stigma and structural violence that may limit WASH access. Few studies have assessed WASH access, insecurity, and inequities among PWID. We describe WASH access, social and geographic inequalities, and factors associated with WASH insecurity among PWID in the Tijuana-San Diego metropolitan area.MethodsIn this cross-sectional binational study, we interviewed PWID (age 18+) in 2020-2021 about WASH access and insecurity. City of residence (Tijuana/San Diego) and housing status were considered as independent variables to describe key WASH access outcomes and to assess as factors associated with WASH insecurity outcomes. Measures of association between outcomes and independent variables were assessed using log modified-Poisson regression models adjusting for covariates.ResultsOf 586 PWID (202 Tijuana; 384 San Diego), 89% reported basic access to drinking water, 38% had basic hand hygiene, 28% basic sanitation, and 46% access to bathing, and 38% reported recent open defecation. Participants residing in Tijuana reported significantly higher insecurity in accessing basic drinking water (aRR: 1.68, 95%CI: 1.02-2.76), basic hygiene (aRR: 1.45, 95%CI: 1.28-1.64), and bathing (aRR: 1.21, 95%CI: 1.06-1.39) than those living in San Diego. Participants experiencing unsheltered homelessness experienced significantly higher insecurity in accessing basic drinking water (aRR: 2.03, 95%CI: 1.07-3.86), basic sanitation (aRR: 1.68, 95%CI: 1.48, 1.92), bathing (aRR: 1.84, 95%CI: 1.52-2.22), and improved water sources for cleaning wounds (aRR: 3.12, 95%CI: 1.55-6.29) and for preparing drugs (aRR: 2.58, 95%CI: 1.36-4.89) than participants living in permanent housing.ConclusionWASH access among PWID in the Tijuana-San Diego metropolitan area was low by international standards and lower than the national averages in both countries. Homelessness was significantly associated with WASH insecurity in this population. Concentrated efforts are needed to guarantee continuously available WASH services for PWID-especially those who are unsheltered.

Abstract

Abstract The KATITA-25 (Kidney AlloTransplant Immunosuppressive Therapy Adherence) Questionnaire is a multidimensional self-administered scale developed in Brazilian Portuguese that measures the predisposition for non-adherence to immunosuppressive medication in candidate patients for kidney transplantation, in the pre-transplant setting. The aim of this study was the cross-cultural validation of the Spanish version of the KATITA-25 scale. The translation/back-translation method was used, followed by cognitive interviews and a pre-test. The Spanish version of KATITA-25 was administered to 163 candidate patients for kidney transplantation from 2 kidney transplant centres and 2 dialysis centres in Catalonia, Spain. The scale was re-administered to the first 79 patients included into the study, after a 2 to 4 weeks interval. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, test–retest reliability with the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC); construct validity with goodness of fit indices after confirmatory factor analysis using structural equation modelling. The Cronbach’s alpha of the Spanish version was 0.83, the ICC was 0.86. Confirmatory factor analysis showed adequate fit of the structural model. Overall, the analytical results closely resembled those obtained in the validation of the original scale. In conclusion, this cross-cultural validation study showed adequate reliability and construct validity of the Spanish version of the KATITA-25 questionnaire.

Abstract

Abstract Deficiencies in the electron transport chain (ETC) lead to mitochondrial diseases. While mutations are distributed across the organism, cell and tissue sensitivity to ETC disruption varies, and the molecular mechanisms underlying this variability remain poorly understood. Here we show that, upon ETC inhibition, a non-canonical tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle upregulates to maintain malate levels and concomitant production of NADPH. Our findings indicate that the adverse effects observed upon CI inhibition primarily stem from reduced NADPH levels, rather than ATP depletion. Furthermore, we find that Pyruvate carboxylase (PC) and ME1, the key mediators orchestrating this metabolic reprogramming, are selectively expressed in astrocytes compared to neurons and underlie their differential sensitivity to ETC inhibition. Augmenting ME1 levels in the brain alleviates neuroinflammation and corrects motor function and coordination in a preclinical mouse model of CI deficiency. These studies may explain why different brain cells vary in their sensitivity to ETC inhibition, which could impact mitochondrial disease management.

Abstract

Abstract Background SARS-CoV-2 infection has become a major international issue, not only from a medical point of view, but also social, economic and political. Most of the available information comes from the United States, Europe, and China, where the population and the socioeconomic status are very different from Latin American countries. This study evaluates the effect of regional socioeconomic characteristics on mortality due SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with immune-mediated rheumatic diseases (IMRD) from Argentina, Mexico and Brazil. Methods Data from three national registries, SAR-COVID (Argentina), CMR-COVID (Mexico) and ReumaCoV-Brasil (Brazil), were combined. Adult IMRD patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection were recruited. National data for each province/state, including population density, number of physicians per inhabitant, income, unemployment, GINI index, Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI), stringency index, vaccination rate and most frequent viral strains per period were assessed as risk factors for mortality due to COVID-19. Results A total of 4744 patients were included, 2534 (53.4%) from SAR-COVID, 1166 (24.6%) from CMRCOVID and 1044 (22.0%) from ReumaCoV-Brasil. Mortality due to COVID-19 was 5.4%. In the multivariable analysis, higher number of physicians per 1000 inhabitants and being infected during the vaccination period of each country were associated with lower mortality. After adjustment for socioeconomic factors, there was no association with country of residence and mortality. Conclusion These findings corroborate the complex interplay between socioeconomic factors, rheumatic disease activity, and regional disparities as determinants of death due to COVID-19 in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. Thus, this research provides valuable insights for guiding public health policies and clinical practice in the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection poses a significant public health challenge and often leads to long-term health complications and even death. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with a proposed viral etiology. HCV infection and PD have been previously suggested to be related. This work aimed to identify potential biomarkers and pathways that may play a role in the joint development of PD and HCV infection. Using BioOptimatics-bioinformatics driven by mathematical global optimization-, 22 publicly available microarray and RNAseq datasets for both diseases were analyzed, focusing on sex-specific differences. Our results revealed that 19 genes, including MT1H, MYOM2, and RPL18, exhibited significant changes in expression in both diseases. Pathway and network analyses stratified by sex indicated that these gene expression changes were enriched in processes related to immune response regulation in females and immune cell activation in males. These findings suggest a potential link between HCV infection and PD, highlighting the importance of further investigation into the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets involved.

Abstract

Fasciolosis is a neglected/re-emerging zoonotic disease caused by the trematode Fasciola hepatica that infects both livestock and humans worldwide, causing severe economic losses and public health problems. The study determined the seroprevalence of F. hepatica infection in buffaloes and its associations with age, sex, and climatic/environmental factors (derived from satellite data) to identify potential risk factors from two tropical climate subtypes in two Mexican states. A total of 725 serum samples were analyzed for the presence of anti-F. hepatica immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), with excretory-secretory (E/S) products as the antigen. The overall prevalence of the parasite in buffaloes between September 2022 and December 2022 was 10.62% (77 out of 725). The highest rate of F. hepatica infection was detected in Veracruz state (9.18%). In addition, the highest prevalence among the climate regions was found in the tropical rainforest (13.62%). In the two states studied, the highest positivity rate for fasciolosis was observed in young animals aged three years and below (21.52%) and in male buffaloes (20.00%). Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, we determined four factors (age, normalized difference vegetation index, land surface temperature day (LST day), and rainfall) to be significantly associated with an increased risk of parasitic infection. Rainfall was the variable most strongly associated with F. hepatica infection (OR 3.434; 95% CI: 2.181-5.406), followed by LST day (OR 2.832; 95% CI: 1.916-4.186). The results indicate that different factors are significantly associated with the prevalence of liver flukes and highlight the importance of continuous monitoring programs for parasite infections to prevent economic losses in buffalo production.

A pesquisa analisa a percepção dos docentes e discentes no processo de inclusão de pessoas com deficiência sobre o uso de tecnologias assistivas no ensino emergencial remoto na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG), sob o enfoque da Teoria Histórico-Cultural de Lev Vygotsky. Possui uma abordagem descritiva e quanto aos procedimentos foi do tipo levantamento, sendo a análise dos dados do tipo qualitativa-quantitativa. Foram utilizados questionários direcionados aos discentes e docentes dos cursos da área de negócios da instituição selecionada. Observa-se que apenas uma discente respondeu ao questionário. A análise dos resultados foi realizada de duas formas: por meio de estatística descritiva com auxílio do software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) e no aspecto qualitativo, por meio da análise de conteúdo. Dentre outras informações, os resultados apontam: falta de comunicação e informação, falta de apoio técnico e dificuldade no uso da tecnologia e fragilidade por parte da instituição para a inclusão de pessoas com deficiência nos cursos da área de negócios.

Abstract

Dirofilaria immitis is a mosquito-borne nematode of dogs, other carnivores and, occasionally, humans. Globally, D. immitis infection (which causes heartworm) is typically more prevalent in tropical than temperate regions. In this study, the seroprevalence of D. immitis was determined from a sample of 335 non-stray dogs from four municipalities, two each from the states of Puebla and Guerrero in Mexico, using polyclonal antibodies to detect serum antigens using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The accuracy of the assay was compared with the modified Knott’s test. The polyclonal antibody used in the direct ELISA had a high sensitivity (100%) with variable specificity (98.2–98.8%) in the municipalities of Puebla and Guerrero. The area under the curve for the four municipalities was 1.0, indicating a high accuracy test, with a cut-off value ranging from 0.45 to 0.50. The overall prevalence of D. immitis infection was 17.56% (59 out of 335). The highest prevalence was in Acapulco (24.78%), followed by Chilpancingo (20.93%), Tecamachalco (10.81%) and Quecholac (8.06%). The highest percentage of positive samples was detected in tropical regions (23.12%) and the lowest in temperate regions (9.56%). This study demonstrates that polyclonal anti-D. immitis antibodies can successfully diagnose heartworm-infected dogs and be used to monitor prevalence effectively and develop prevention strategies against Dirofilaria infection.
