The massive blackout that occurred in August 2003 left over 50 million people in the northeastern and midwestern parts of the United States without electricity and caused billions of dollars in economic losses. This event highlighted the importance of sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure. Our study examines the impact of this blackout on the sustainability of financial markets by analyzing the liquidity and information asymmetry of U.S. stocks listed on major exchanges. Our results show that the blackout had a negative impact on the financial market’s liquidity, as evidenced by a significant widening of bid–ask spreads and a decrease in the market quality index. We also find an increase in information asymmetry during the blackout period, as measured by higher realized spreads. Furthermore, our study reveals that the blackout had a border impact on global financial markets and the negative effect on liquidity persisted even after two weeks.

The number of deaths from cancer is increasing worldwide every year. IDO (ndoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase) is an important target for tumour therapy. Overexpression of IDO in the tumour microenvironment leads to apoptosis of effector T-cells, resulting in tumour development. Inhibition of IDO expression has been shown to be an effective tumour therapy. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find new IDO inhibitors. Virtual screening and bioassay methods, including molecular docking, drug-like property investigation and anti-tumour evaluation, were used to search for new potential IDO inhibitors in the Specs database. A compound with potent inhibitory activity on Hela cells was found, IC50 value was 3.959 ± 0.380 µ M. By analysing the binding mechanism of the compound with IDO protein, the possible source of its activity was explained. In conclusion, this paper reports a virtual screening strategy based on molecular docking. Through this strategy, compounds with anti-tumour activity were obtained. It provides a new direction for the discovery and development of anti-tumour agents in the future.

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the association between insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease (CVD) differs by glucose tolerance status. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We analyzed a nationwide sample of 111,576 adults without CVD at baseline, using data from the China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort Study. Insulin resistance was estimated by sex-specific HOMA of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) quartiles for participants with normal glucose tolerance, prediabetes, or diabetes, separately, and by 1 SD of HOMA-IR for the overall study participants. We used Cox proportional hazards models to examine the association between insulin resistance and incident CVD according to glucose tolerance status and evaluate the CVD risk associated with the combined categories of insulin resistance and obesity in prediabetes and diabetes, as compared with normal glucose tolerance. Models were adjusted for age, sex, education attainment, alcohol drinking, smoking, physical activity, and diet quality. RESULTS In participants with normal glucose tolerance, prediabetes, and diabetes defined by three glucose parameters, multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% CIs) for incident CVD associated with the highest versus the lowest quartile of HOMA-IR were 1.03 (0.82–1.30), 1.23 (1.07–1.42), and 1.61 (1.30–2.00), respectively; the corresponding values for CVD per 1-SD increase in HOMA-IR were 1.04 (0.92–1.18), 1.12 (1.06–1.18), and 1.15 (1.09–1.21), respectively (P for interaction = 0.011). Compared with participants with normal glucose tolerance, in participants with prediabetes, the combination of the highest HOMA-IR quartile and obesity showed 17% (95% CI 2–34%) higher risk of CVD, while the combination of the lowest two HOMA-IR quartiles and nonobesity showed 15–17% lower risk of CVD. In participants with diabetes, the upper two HOMA-IR quartiles exhibited 44–77% higher risk of CVD, regardless of obesity status. Consistent findings were observed for glucose tolerance status defined by different combinations of glycemic parameters. CONCLUSIONS Glucose intolerance status exacerbated the association between insulin resistance and CVD risk. Compared with adults with normal glucose tolerance, adults with prediabetes who were both insulin resistant and obese exhibited higher risks of CVD, while in adults with diabetes, the CVD risk related to insulin resistance remained, regardless of obesity.

To investigate the characteristic ultrasonographic findings of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in major salivary glands and identify the value of polar vessel in color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) for the diagnosis of ACC.From January 2017 to December 2021, 76 patients with parotid and submandibular gland tumors, including 14 patients with ACC, as confirmed by surgery and histopathology, were enrolled. Their clinicopathologic information and ultrasound (US) features were recorded and analyzed. The performance of polar vessel in CDFI for differentiating ACC from non-ACC (benign tumors and mucoepidermoid carcinoma [MEC]) was analyzed.ACC in the major salivary gland was more likely to be associated with pain symptoms (P = .027) and unclear borders and rough edges in grayscale US (P = .002, .015, respectively) than benign tumors. Compared to MEC, ACC tended to feature a homogeneous internal echo (P = .008). ACC of the major salivary gland had a significantly higher incidence of polar vessel sign than that of non-ACC (benign tumors and MEC) (P .0001, .0001, respectively). The polar vessel sign showed good performance in distinguishing between ACC and non-ACC, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.857, a sensitivity of 71.4%, a specificity of 100%, and an accuracy of 94.7%. Positive predictive value and negative predictive value were calculated at 100% and 93.9%, respectively.The US sign of polar vessel has high diagnostic efficiency, and it may have important potential for use as a new complementary sign for the diagnosis of ACC in major salivary glands.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is an uncommon tumour that mainly affects bone in children and adolescents. The current treatment options of OS are of limited significance due to their immense side effects. In the present manuscript, we have developed a novel series of 1,2,3-triazole chalcone derivatives as potential agents against OS. The compounds were synthesized and evaluated for their PI3K and mTOR inhibitory activity using luminescent kinase assay, and Lance ultra assay, resp. The entire set of compounds showed significant to moderate inhibition of both kinases in the nanomolar range. The three most active compounds: 4e (N-(4-(3-(1-(4-bromophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)acryloyl)phenyl)-4-nitrobenzamide), 4f (N-(4-(3-(1-(4-bromophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)acryloyl)phenyl)-4-chlorobenzamide) and 4g (4-bromo-N-(4-(3-(1-(4-bromophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)acryloyl)phenyl)benzamide), were evaluated for anticancer activity against human OS cancer cell line (MG-63), liver cancer cell line (HepG2), lung cancer cell line (A549) and cervical cancer (HeLa), using MTT assay. Among the tested series, compound 4e showed a better inhibitory profile than gedatolisib against PI3K and was approximately comparable to that of gedatolisib against mTOR. The most significant inhibitory activity was observed for compound 4e against all cell lines (MG-63, HepG2, A549 and HeLa), still somewhat lower to comparable to that of gedatolisib, but with the highest potency against MG-63 cells. Compound 4e was further tested for anti-cancer activity against other OS cells and showed to be equipo-tent to gedatolisib against U2OS and Saos-2 cells. Moreover, it was also found non-toxic to normal cells (BEAS-2B and MCF 10A). The effect of compound 4e was further determined on apoptosis of Saos-2 cells by Annexin-PI assay, where it significantly amplified the percentage of apoptotic cells. Novel 1,2,3-triazole chalcone derivatives are potential agents against OS.

In aqueous zinc-based batteries, the reaction by-product Zn4SO4(OH)6·xH2O is commonly observed when cycling vanadium-based and manganese-based cathodes. This by-product obstructs ion transport paths, resulting in enhanced electrochemical impedance. In this work, we report a hybrid aqueous battery based on a Na0.44MnO2 cathode and a metallic zinc foil anode. The surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate is added to the electrolyte as a modifier, and the performance before and after modification is compared. The results show that sodium lauryl sulfate can generate an artificial passivation film on the electrode surface. This passivation film reduces the generation of Zn4SO4(OH)6·xH2O and inhibits the dissolution of Na0.44MnO2 in the electrolyte. Therefore, the reaction kinetics and cycle stability of the battery are significantly enhanced. A battery with this electrolyte additive delivers an initial discharge capacity of 235 mA h g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A g -1. At the same time, the battery has excellent rate performance. Under the high-rate condition of 1 A g−1, the battery still maintains a capacity retention rate of 93% after 1500 cycles. Finally, the functional mechanism of by-product inhibition by the electrolyte additive is discussed.

Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) emerged as ideal solvents, and bipyridine as one of the most used ligands have been widely employed in surface science, catalysis, and molecular electronics. Herein, in situ shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) and STM break junction (STM-BJ) technique has been employed to probe the electrochemical process of bipyridine at Au(111)/IL interfaces. It is interestingly found that these molecules undertake a redox process with a pair of well-defined reversible peaks in cyclic voltammograms (CVs). The spectroscopic evidence shows a radical cation generated with rising new Raman peaks related to parallel CC stretching of a positively charged pyridyl ring. Furthermore, these electrochemically charged bipyridine is also confirmed by electrochemical STM-BJ at the single-molecule level, which displays a binary conductance switch ratio of about 400% at the redox potentials. This present work offers a molecular-level insight into the pyridine-mediated reaction process and electron transport in RTILs.

BackgroundEducation attainment can improve life expectancy and guide healthy behaviours throughout an entire lifetime. A nationwide longitudinal study of the association of education status with the risk of hypertension and its control in China is lacking.MethodsThe China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort Study is a multicentre, population-based, prospective cohort study. We performed the baseline survey from 2011 to 2012. A follow-up visit was conducted during 2014–2016. 101 959 subjects were included in the final data analyses. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to examine the associations of education levels with the risk of hypertension and uncontrolled hypertension.ResultsDuring follow-up, 11 189 (19.9%) participants had developed hypertension among subjects without hypertension at baseline. Among the participants with hypertension at baseline, only 40.6% had controlled hypertension. Compared with the participants’ education level at elementary school and below, the multivariable-adjusted HR for incident hypertension was 0.76 (95% CI, 0.72 to 0.80) in those with a middle school education level and 0.67 (95% CI, 0.63 to 0.70) in those with a high school degree or above. Correspondingly, multivariable-adjusted HRs associated with uncontrolled hypertension were 0.90 (95% CI, 0.87 to 0.92) in participants with a middle school education level and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.82 to 0.88) in participants with a high school degree or above level.ConclusionParticipants with education attainment at elementary school and below exhibited excess risks of newly diagnosed hypertension and worse blood pressure control compared with individuals with education attainment at middle school or above.

Lung cancer, as one of the most fatal cancers around the world, is responsible for the death of millions every year. Among various types of lung cancers, the ones overexpressing CD44 is usually associated higher cell proliferation with poorer prognosis. Therefore, finding a way to effectively treat CD44 positive lung cancer is urgently needed. Here in this study, negatively charged ultrasmall prussian blue nanoparticles (UPBNPs) was firstly synthesized and adsorbed to polyethyleneimine (PEI) together with glucose oxidase (Gox). Afterwards, the PEI was further complexed with hyaluronic acid (HA) to give a cascade reaction platform (HP/UPB-Gox) for CD44 positive lung cancer therapy. The HP/UPB-Gox with HA shell was able to positively target CD44 overexpressed A549 cells. Upon arriving at the tumor tissue, the Gox catalyzed the glucose of tumor to create H2O2, which further served as the substrate of UPBNPs, a peroxidase mimic, to finally give highly toxic hydroxyl radical (OH) for cancer therapy. Therefore, the cascade reaction formed between UPBNPs and Gox was expected to realize effective treatment on CD44 overexpressed lung cancer.

By reshaping the course content with the main line of "system" and "connection", the Trinity course education scheme is established, including the professional knowledge based on connection view, multi-dimensional practical exercise, and quality improving integrated with ideological and political education in courses. The results of feedback survey show that the reformed teaching of communication principle course has achieved good effect.

The pericarp of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim (PZM) is one of eight fascinating condiments and also used as a traditional herbal medicine to treat a variety of diseases. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was applied for the extraction of polysaccharides from PZM (PPZM) and the extraction conditions were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The obtained PPZM yield (2.60 ± 0.06%) was closely agreed with the predicted value (2.58%), and the optimal extraction conditions obtained were: liquid to solid ratio of 32 mL/g, extraction time of 42 min, and extraction temperature of 61 °C. PPZM was determined to be composed of mannose (Man), rhamnose (Rha), galacturonic acid (GalA), glucose (Glu), galactose (Gal), arabinose (Ara) with a molar ratio of 4.93: 5.03: 71.01: 16.01: 24.87: 18.79, and the average molecular weight (Mw) of PPZM was 1.72 × 105 Da. Typical polysaccharide characteristics were determined by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). PPZM exhibited remarkable antioxidant activities in vitro. More importantly, PPZM effectively protected adrenal phaeochromocytoma PC12 cells against H2O2-induced damage by inhibiting the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malondialdehyde (MDA), increasing the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and inhibiting abnormal apoptosis. Further experiments indicated that the anti-apoptotic effects of PPZM were closely related to down-regulating the expressions of Bax and Caspase-3, and up-regulating the expression of Bcl-2. Therefore, PPZM can be used as the source of natural antioxidants and neuroprotective agents.

PurposeThis study is aimed at making an inspection of the effects of collaborative innovation network characteristics on firm innovation performance, and the intermediary roles of knowledge transfer efficiency is taken into account.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a convenient sampling method to obtain population and samples. Using data obtained by publishing online and paper questionnaires, and using on-site interviews in Anhui Province in the Yangtze River Delta region of China, descriptive analysis, regression analysis and correlation analysis are utilized to study the direct influence of collaborative innovation network characteristics on knowledge transfer efficiency as well as firm innovation performance, and the intermediary roles of knowledge transfer efficiency on firm innovation performance, respectively. In this study, 3,000 questionnaires were distributed to the employees of enterprises engaged in research and development (R&D) activities, of which 2,560 were valid. With the help of SPSS24.0 software, the reliability and validity of the questionnaire was analyzed.FindingsThe results are indicative of that network centrality and relationship strength positively affect knowledge transfer efficiency and firm innovation performance. Nevertheless, network scale has no significant correlation with knowledge transfer efficiency and enterprise innovation performance. In addition, knowledge transfer efficiency is an intermediary between collaborative innovation network characteristics and enterprise innovation performance, and positively affects enterprise innovation performance, which demonstrated that managers should take advantage of collaborative innovation network characteristics to elevate knowledge transfer efficiency because well-realized transferals of knowledge can help accelerate the coordination of resources in knowledge, and finally bring about the advancement of firm's innovation abilities and performance.Research limitations/implicationsThere are few previous studies that fully examined the relationships among collaborative innovation network characteristics, knowledge transfer efficiency and firm innovation performance. This paper developed previous researches on the relationships between collaborative innovation network characteristics, knowledge transfer efficiency and firm innovation performance. The mediation of knowledge transfer efficiency on the relationship between collaborative innovation network characteristics and firm innovation performance is analyzed. Further, studies on collaborative innovation network characteristics using data obtained from employees engaged in R&D activities are very limited in the literature. On account of that, the findings in this study may make sense to the innovation ability of innovative enterprise and expand the literature in the field of enterprise strategic management and knowledge management.Practical implicationsThis analysis shows that collaborative innovation network characteristics have both positive and negative effects on firm innovation performance. Therefore, business managers should pay attention to their position in the collaborative innovation network and maintain the relationship strength with other innovation subjects. Special consideration should be given to the knowledge transfer of innovative enterprises, so as to improve firm innovation performance practically.Originality/valueThe study may provide additional understandings for researchers, government managers, universities and enterprises with regard to strategic management from the visual angle of innovation ecosystems. It is instrumental in the exploration of the mechanisms enabling firm innovation performance.

Activities of ABO blood group glycosyltransferases in the plasma of blood donors with different blood groups were detected to discover their normal ranges. Gestational hyperglycemia increases the risk of diabetes in later life. However, the risk of future cardiovascular diseases (CVD) related to gestational hyperglycemia remains inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of gestational hyperglycemia on the subsequent risk of CVD and its modifying factors among elderly Chinese women.We conducted a case-control study of elderly women from the baseline survey of Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals: a lONgitudinal (REACTION) study. Women with gestational hyperglycemia (n = 82), and controls matched by age and study site (n = 410) were included. Information on CVD, including reported coronary heart disease, stroke, or myocardial infarction, was collected through an interviewer-assisted questionnaire.Women with gestational hyperglycemia were more likely to develop diabetes (odds ratio [OR], 2.51; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.50-4.18) and CVD (OR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.05-3.74). Even without progressing to type 2 diabetes, gestational hyperglycemia was associated with an increased risk of CVD (OR, 2.88; 95% CI, 1.18-7.00). However, subgroup analysis indicated that compared with those without gestational hyperglycemia or hypertension, women with both gestational hyperglycemia and hypertension had higher risk of CVD (OR, 3.98; 95% CI, 1.65-9.58), whereas the risk estimate did not significantly change in women with gestational hyperglycemia alone (OR, 2.15; 95% CI, 0.71-6.57). Stratified analysis indicated that among those with overweight/obesity, inactive physical activity, or unhealthy dietary habits, gestational hyperglycemia increased the risk of CVD.In elderly Chinese women, gestational hyperglycemia was associated with an increased risk of CVD in later life. Context Diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia accelerates the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. However, data regarding the association between main cardiometabolic morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia and the subsequent risk of CVD events in Chinese adults are still limited. Objective To investigate the associations between individual and combined cardiometabolic morbidities and incident cardiovascular events in Chinese adults. Methods Baseline data were obtained from a prospective, nationwide, and population-based cohort study in China during 2011–2012. A total of 133 572 participants aged ≥40 years were included in the study. The main outcome measures were CVD events. Results Compared with participants without diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia, participants with only diabetes (hazard ratio [HR], 1.58; 95% CI, 1.32-1.90) or only hypertension (2.04; 1.82-2.28) exhibited significantly higher risk for CVD events, while participants with only dyslipidemia (0.97; 0.84-1.12) exhibited no significantly higher risk for CVD events. When analyzed collectively, participants with diabetes plus hypertension (HR, 2.67; 95% CI, 2.33-3.06), diabetes plus dyslipidemia (1.57; 1.32-1.87), and hypertension plus dyslipidemia (2.12; 1.88-2.39) exhibited significantly higher risk for CVD. Moreover, participants with the combination of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia exhibited the highest risk for CVD events (HR, 3.06; 95% CI, 2.71-3.46). Multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) for CVD associated with diabetes based on fasting glucose ≥7.0 mmol/L, oral glucose tolerance test 2-hour glucose ≥11.1 mmol/L, and hemoglobin A1c ≥6.5% were 1.64 (1.51-1.78), 1.57 (1.45-1.69), and 1.54 (1.42-1.66), respectively; associated with hypertension based on systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg were 1.89 (1.76-2.03) and 1.74 (1.60-1.88), respectively; associated with dyslipidemia based on total cholesterol ≥6.22 mmol/L, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ≥4.14 mmol/L, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol Conclusion Diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia showed additive associations with the risk of CVD events in middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults.

Chiglitazar (Carfloglitazar) is a novel non-thiazolidinedione (TZD) structured peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) pan-agonist that has shown promising effects on glycemic control and lipid regulation in patients with type 2 diabetes in previous clinical studies. This randomized phase 3 trial aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of chiglitazar with placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes with insufficient glycemic control by strict diet and exercise alone. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to receive chiglitazar 32 mg (n = 167), chiglitazar 48 mg (n = 166), or placebo (n = 202) once daily.
