Background: In recent years, the incidence of nodular goiter and thyroid carcinoma (TC), as well as the amount of surgery, have been increasing simultaneously. To summarize the significance and experience of combined nano-carbon tracer and nano-fluorescence assay for parathyroid misresection reduction in thyroid surgery. Methods: The data of patients who underwent thyroid surgery from November 2016 to July 2017 in the Thyroid Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of the Tenth People’s Hospital of Tongji University were collected and divided into test group (combined nano-carbon tracer and nano-fluorescence assay method, 80 cases) and a control group (nano carbon tracer method, 80 cases). Comparison of the patient data and preoperative and postoperative blood calcium, blood phosphorus, PTH value in the control and test group was performed. Researchers have suggested that infants exhibiting baby schema are considered cute. These similar studies have mainly focused on changes in overall baby schema facial features. However, whether a change in only eye size affects the perception of cuteness across different facial expressions and ages has not been explicitly evaluated until now. In the present study, a paired comparison method and 7-point scale were used to investigate the effects of eye size on perceived cuteness across facial expressions (positive, neutral, and negative) and ages (adults and infants). The results show that stimuli with large eyes were perceived to be cuter than both unmanipulated eyes and small eyes across all facial expressions and age groups. This suggests not only that the effect of baby schema on cuteness is based on changes in a set of features but also that eye size as an individual feature can affect the perception of cuteness.

Abstract Introduction Calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), or the calcium to magnesium (Ca:Mg) ratio may affect the risk of dementia via complex mechanisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of dietary Ca, Mg, and Ca:Mg ratio with dementia risk at the prospective phase of the Shanghai Aging Study. Methods We analyzed data from 1565 dementia‐free participants living in an urban community who had measurements of dietary Ca and Mg intake derived from a food frequency questionnaire at baseline and incident dementia during follow‐up. Results Over the 5‐year follow‐up, 162 (10.4%) participants were diagnosed with incident dementia by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition criteria. Participants with the lowest tertile of dietary Ca (267.5 mg/day was related to an increased risk for dementia (adjusted hazard ratio: 3.97, 95% confidence interval: 1.29–12.25). Conclusions Our findings suggest that high dietary intake of Mg is associated with an increased risk of dementia mainly among older adults with low Ca:Mg intake ratios. Proper balance of Ca to Mg in the diet may be critical to the relationship between Mg intake and risk of dementia. Highlights Participants with the lowest tertile of dietary calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) had the highest incidence rates of dementia. In the subgroup with Ca:Mg ratios ≤1.69, Mg intake >267.5 mg/day was related to an increased risk for dementia. Balance of Ca to Mg in diet may be critical to the relationship between Mg intake and risk of dementia.

The role of dietary factors in osteoporotic fractures (OFs) in women is not fully elucidated. We investigated the associations between incidence of OF and dietary calcium, magnesium and soy isoflavone intake in a longitudinal study of 48 584 postmenopausal women. Multivariable Cox regression was applied to derive hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate associations between dietary intake, based on the averages of two assessments that took place with a median interval of 2⋅4 years, and fracture risk. The average age of study participants is 61⋅4 years (range 43⋅3–76⋅7 years) at study entry. During a median follow-up of 10⋅1 years, 4⋅3 % participants experienced OF. Compared with daily calcium intake ≤400 mg/d, higher calcium intake (>400 mg/d) was significantly associated with about a 40–50 % reduction of OF risk among women with a calcium/magnesium (Ca/Mg) intake ratio ≥1⋅7. Among women with prior fracture history, high soy isoflavone intake was associated with reduced OF risk; the HR was 0⋅72 (95 % CI 0⋅55, 0⋅93) for the highest (>42⋅0 mg/d) v. lowest (

Compared with primary and local tumor, metastasis is more difficult to resect completely and remain the leading cause of death associated with solid tumors. It is therefore pressing to develop effective strategies to prevent and suppress tumor metastasis in its early stages. Heparanase overexpression is significantly associated with increased malignancy and metastasis. Here, we develop a novel heparanase degradable heparin-based microcarrier, HBMA, for specific staining, targeting, and inhibiting tumor cells with high metastatic potential. HBMA is fabricated through self-assembling of three components, positively charged fluorescent gold nanoclusters (KG-AuNCs), heparin polymers (HP), and antisense miRNA-21 oligonucleotides (AM-21), with each component playing multiple roles. Results of confocal microscopy and flow cytometry show that this agent has an excellent capability to label metastatic tumor cells with high selectivity. On the therapeutic side, the results of cell viability assay, wound healing assay, and plate colony formation assay verify that HBMA induces a significant inhibition effect towards the proliferation and migration of the selectively target tumor cells. The heparanase responsive AM-21 delivery, the specific staining, and the efficient tumor cell activity suppression highlight HBMA as a promising cancer theranostic agent to prevent tumor metastasis.

There is a pressing need for more evidence from regions from Western countries to draw conclusive outcomes concerning psychological sciences. Hence, the study intends to develop the Japanese version of the short form of the Five-Factor Narcissism Inventory; (FFNI-SF) to assess reliability and validity, and to explore the psychometric adaptation of a broad range of narcissistic personalities in relation to the Japanese people. Altogether, 449 Japanese undergraduate students took part in this study. The findings denoted that FFNI-SF had an acceptable level of reliability and correlated well with existing Japanese scales. Based on the exploratory factor analysis, the lack of empathy was excluded from grandiosity, yielding an isolated factor. However, the exploratory factor analysis revealed that the lack of empathy had nothing to do with Japanese narcissism.

Purpose: Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have exerted antimicrobial properties. However, there is insufficient evaluation regarding the in vivo antifungal activity of ZnO-NPs. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and mechanism of ZnO-NPs in controlling Candida albicans in the invertebrate Galleria mellonella.Methods:Galleria mellonella larvae were injected with different doses of ZnO-NPs to determine their in vivo toxicity. Non-toxic doses of ZnO-NPs were chosen for prophylactic injection in G. mellonella followed by C. albicans infection. Then the direct in vitro antifungal effect of ZnO-NPs against C. albicans was evaluated. In addition, the mode of action of ZnO-NPs was assessed in larvae through different assays: quantification of hemocyte density, morphology observation of hemocytes, characterization of hemocyte aggregation and phagocytosis, and measurement of hemolymph phenoloxidase (PO) activity.Results: Zinc oxide nanoparticles were non-toxic to the larvae at relatively low concentrations (≤20 mg/kg). ZnO-NP pretreatment significantly prolonged the survival of C. albicans-infected larvae and decreased the fungal dissemination and burden in the C. albicans-infected larvae. This observation was more related to the activation of host defense rather than their fungicidal capacities. Specifically, ZnO-NP treatment increased hemocyte density, promoted hemocyte aggregation, enhanced hemocyte phagocytosis, and activated PO activity in larvae.Conclusion: Prophylactic treatment with lower concentrations of ZnO-NPs protects G. mellonella from C. albicans infection. The innate immune response primed by ZnO-NPs may be part of the reason for the protective effects. This study provides new evidence of the capacity of ZnO-NPs in enhancing host immunity and predicts that ZnO-NPs will be attractive for further anti-infection applications.

Endocannabinoids play important roles in the functioning of various physiological systems in humans and non-mammalian animals, including invertebrates. However, information concerning their roles in physiological functions in members of the phylum Mollusca is scarce. Here the hypothesis that the endocannabinoids are involved in mediating settlement of marine invertebrates was tested. Two endocannabinoids [N-arachidonoyl ethanolamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG)], and two endocannabinoid-like lipids [N-Oleoylethanolamide (OEA) and N-Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA)] were detected in the green mussel Perna viridis. In particular, 2-AG was present at significantly higher levels in unattached P. viridis compared with attached mussels. The in vivo level of 2-AG was inversely correlated with the attachment activity of P. viridis. Furthermore, exposure to synthetic 2-AG inhibited attachment of P. viridis in a reversible manner. Transcriptomic analysis suggested that up-regulation of 2-AG synthase (Phospholipase C-β, PLC-β) and down-regulation of its degrading enzyme (Monoacylglycerol lipase, MAGL) resulted in higher levels of 2-AG in unattached mussels. A putative mechanism for the negative regulation of mussel attachment by 2-AG is proposed that involves a Ca2+- Nitric oxide (NO)- cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway. This study broadens our understanding of the evolution and roles of the endocannabinoid system in animals, and reveals an endogenous regulatory cue for mussel attachment.

Functionalized optical fiber tips featuring miniature sizes and diverse functions have broken the limitations of traditional optical fiber with fixed shapes and single materials, significantly enriching the application scenarios in communication, sensing, imaging, and other fields. However, the unconventional shape presents challenges in manufacturing arbitrarily sophisticated 3D micro/nano structures on optical fiber tips. Femtosecond laser 3D nano‐printing (FL‐3DNp) technology injects new vitality into the functionalization of fiber tips due to its high‐precision, customizable structure, and real 3D processing abilities, as well as advantages of non‐vacuum, maskless, and plentiful materials. This paper extensively compares the key performance parameters of various micro‐nano manufacturing technologies for functionalizing optical fiber probes and focuses on the FL‐3DNp technology. In addition, the latest research progresses are systematically presented from the perspective of structure and application. Finally, the current research challenges and future development directions in this emerging field are discussed, aiming at providing scientific and industrial guidance for FL‐3DNp in functionalizing optical fibers. Introduction: Cather ablation (CA) is a well‐recognized treatment alternative for atrial fibrillation (AF) patients despite more than 20% ablation‐treated patients suffering from AF recurrence. The underlying mechanism of AF recurrence postablation is probably associated with high cardiac parasympathetic activity, which can be assessed with deceleration capacity (DC) of heart rate. Given that the relationship between DC and AF recurrence is still controversial, this systematic review and meta‐analysis was performed to investigate the characteristics of DC in patients with and without AF recurrence, evaluating the prognostic value of DC in AF patients after CA. Methods: A literature search was systematically performed in the Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases until October 01, 2023. The observational studies reporting either the pre‐ and postablation DC in both recurrence and non‐recurrence groups or the ratios based on DC for predicting AF recurrence were mainly included. Weighted mean differences (WMD) or odds ratios (OR) based on DC would be calculated with a random‐effect model, if heterogeneity estimated with the I 2 index and Q statistic was significant (I² > 50% or p < .05); otherwise, a fixed‐ effect model would be utilized. Results: A total of eight observational studies involving 914 AF patients treated with radiofrequency or cryoballoon ablation were included in this study. Ablation‐treated patients with AF recurrence had the higher DC postablation in relation to those without recurrence (WMD, 1.00; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.33–1.67; p < .01), which was present up to 3 months of follow‐up (WMD, 1.54; 95% CI, 1.11–1.96; p < .01), whereas there was no statistical significance in DC before ablation between recurrence and non‐recurrence groups (WMD, 0.34; 95% CI, −0.12 to 0.79; p = .15). The high DC postablation was a risk factor for AF recurrence in ablation‐treated patients (OR, 2.17; 95% CI, 1.44–3.25; p < .01). Conclusion: The high DC postablation was associated with the risk of AF recurrence, suggesting that DC may act as a prognostic indicator in AF patients treated with CA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sirtuins (SIRTs) are nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent histone deacetylases with diverse physiological functions. A variety of small molecules have been developed to interrogate the physiological function of SIRTs. Therefore, it is desirable to establish efficient and convenient assays to screen SIRTs modulators. In this study, we designed a series of fluorescent nonapeptide probes derived from substrates of SIRT1–SIRT3. Fluorescence increment of these probes is based on SIRT-mediated removal of the acyl side chain with fluorophore, which makes this system free of lysine-recognizing protease. Comparing the reaction of these fluorescent nonapeptide substrates with SIRT1–SIRT3 and SIRT6, it was confirmed that this assessment system was the most suitable for SIRT2 activity detection. Thus, SIRT2 was used to modify substrates by truncating the amino acids or lysine side chain of nonapeptide. Finally, two specific and efficient fluorescent probes for SIRT2, ne-D9 and ne-K4a, were developed. Evaluation of the results revealed that ne-K4a based assay was more suitable for modulators screening in vitro, while the other specific substrate ne-D9 was stable in cell lysate and could detect the activity of SIRT2 in the same. Summary: Most marine benthic invertebrates have a pelagic larval phase, after which they settle preferentially on or near conspecific adults, forming aggregations. Although settlement pheromones from conspecific adults have been implicated as critical drivers of aggregation for more than 30 years, surprisingly few have been unambiguously identified. Here we show that in the invasive dreissenid mussel Mytilopsis sallei (an ecological and economic pest), three common purines (adenosine, inosine, and hypoxanthine) released from adults in a synergistic and precise ratio (1:1.125:3.25) serve as an aggregation pheromone by inducing conspecific larval settlement and metamorphosis. Our results demonstrate that simple common metabolites can function as species-specific pheromones when present in precise combinations. Abstract Background To investigate the occurrence of ciliochoroidal detachment (CCD), its risk factors and its impact on the success rate after Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation. Methods This is a retrospective observational study carried out at Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Zhejiang, China. Patients with uncontrolled glaucoma who underwent AGV implantation alone or combined with phacoemulsification (AGV-Phaco) in the hospital from April 1, 2013 to July 31, 2016 were included. The preoperative and postoperative CCD was defined when the detachment between ciliary body and choroid was detected by the ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) respectively. The main outcomes included the incidence of CCD and the success rate at 6 months after surgery. Results In total, 97 male and 56 female patients were included. CCD was observed in 92 (57.8%) eyes. The glaucoma diagnosis in the Non-CCD and CCD group included primary open angle glaucoma (21(31.3%) vs 33(35.9%)), primary angle closure glaucoma (10(14.9%) vs 13(14.1%)), secondary glaucoma (25(37.3%) vs (28(30.4%)) and so on. The preoperative median IOP (interquartile range) were 21.7(16.0,32.0) mmHg and 23.0(16.0,33.0) mmHg in the Non-CCD group and CCD group. Previous surgical history (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.24 to 13.34; odds ratio (OR) 4.06; p = 0.02) and shorter axial length (95% CI, 0.62 to 0.97 OR 0.78; p = 0.02) were the two risk factors of CCD. The success rate between the CCD and Non-CCD group was not significantly different (64.3% vs 62.5%, p = 0.86) at 6 months. Conclusions The incidence of CCD is 57.8% after AGV surgery. Eyes with previous surgical procedure was prone to CCD occurrence and longer axial length was protective against CCD. But at 6 months postoperatively, CCD did not reduce the success rate of AGV surgery and may not be a worrisome complication.
