151. Cluster Analysis and Classification Model of Nutritional Anemia Associated Risk Factors Among Palestinian Schoolchildren, 2014

Abstract

Nutritional inadequacy has been a major health problem worldwide. One of the many health problems that result from it is anemia. Anemia is considered a health concern among all ages, particularly children, as it has been associated with cognitive and developmental delays. Researchers have investigated the association between nutritional deficiencies and anemia through various methods. As novel analytical methods are needed to ascertain the association and reveal indirect ones, we aimed to classify nutritional anemia using the cluster analysis approach. In this study, we included 4,762 students aged between 10 and 17 years attending public and UNRWA schools in the West Bank. Students' 24-h food recall and blood sample data were collected for nutrient intake and hemoglobin analysis. The K-means cluster analysis was used to cluster the hemoglobin levels into two groups. Vitamin B12, folate, and iron intakes were used as the indicators of nutrient intake associated with anemia and were classified as per the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) values. We applied the Classification and Regression Tree (CRT) model for studying the association between hemoglobin clusters and vitamin B12, folate, and iron intakes, sociodemographic variables, and health-related risk factors, accounting for grade and age. Results indicated that 46.4% of the students were classified into the low hemoglobin cluster, and 60.7, 72.5, and 30.3% of vitamin B12, folate, and iron intakes, respectively, were below RDA. The CRT analysis indicated that vitamin B12, iron, and folate intakes are important factors related to anemia in girls associated with age, locality, food consumption patterns, and physical activity levels, while iron and folate intakes were significant factors related to anemia in boys associated with the place of residence and the educational level of their mothers. The deployment of clustering and classification techniques for identifying the association between anemia and nutritional factors might facilitate the development of nutritional anemia prevention and intervention programs that will improve the health and wellbeing of schoolchildren.

Abstract

BackgroundBreastfeeding (BF) is considered the ultimate method of infant feeding for at least the first 6 months of life. Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is one of the most effective interventions to improve child survival. The main objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and duration of exclusive breastfeeding and the associated factors among women in Dubai and Sharjah, UAE.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in four hospitals and four healthcare centers in Dubai and Sharjah between September 2017 and December 2017. Hospitals and centers are governmental and provide maternal and child health services. A convenience sample of 858 Arab and Emirati mothers with children under the age of 2 years participated in the study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted by using structured questionnaires. The study was approved by the University Ethical Committee and the UAE Ministry of Health before data collection. Descriptive statistics were computed to describe all the questionnaire items. The chi-square test was used to compare the study's categorical variables. A binary logistic regression analysis was used to predict the relationship between BF and its associated factors. Statistical tests with P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.ResultsThe mean age of the participating mothers was 30.6 (SD 5.5) years. Results showed that the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding among the study participants was 24.4% (31.1% in Sharjah and 22% in Dubai; P = 0.003). The binary logistic regression reported that mother's and father's education, skin-to-skin period, number of children, mothers' health, and place of living were significantly associated with exclusive breastfeeding (P < 0.05). The results reported a significant association between EB and duration of breastfeeding (OR = 6.9, P = 0.002), husband education (OR = 2.1, P = 0.015), mother education (OR = 1.3, P = 0.027), number of children (OR = 7.9, P = 0.045), having any health problem (OR = 1.2, P = 0.045), and living place (OR = 1.4, P = 0.033), and a non-significant positive effect of family size and family income. Furthermore, the result reported a significant association between mixed breastfeeding and duration of breastfeeding (OR = 0.1, P = 0.000), skin-to-skin period (OR = 0.3, P = 0.002), underweight (OR = 4.7, P = 0.034), last infant's sex (OR = 1.6, P = 0.010), having maid at home (OR = 2.1, P = 0.000), number of children (OR = 0.2, P = 0.013), and living place (OR =1.1, P = 0.014), and a non-significant association with family size and family income.ConclusionsTherefore, a health promotion program for exclusive breastfeeding during antenatal health visits, together with initiating health policies in maternal hospitals to encourage the initiation of breastfeeding during the first hour of birth and the introduction of skin-to-skin contact during the first 5 min of birth are highly recommended.

153. Effects of Si Slabs on the Performance of CdO Thin Films Designed for Optoelectronic Applications

Abstract

Herein, the structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of CdO stacked layers comprising Si slabs of thickness of 100 nm are investigated. The performance of the stacked layers, which are prepared by the thermal evaporation technique under vacuum pressure of 10-5 mbar, is remarkably enhanced via insertion of Si thin slabs. The presence of Si slabs between the layers of CdO improves the crystallinity and surface morphology, increases the light absorbability in the ultraviolet and visible ranges of light and also increases the dielectric constant, the quality factor, and optical conductivity values. The optical conductivity parameters, which are analyzed in accordance with Drude-Lorentz approach, have shown that the insertion of the Si layers rises the values of the drift mobility of holes in CdO and lowers the free holes concentration. The energy band gap of CdO films is narrowed from 2.20 to 1.27 eV upon insertion of Si slabs. The applicability of the plasmonic CdO/Si/CdO devices as low pass filers in the frequency domain of 0.01-1.80 GHz is verified through impedance spectroscopy measurements.

Abstract

Tumours are complex ecosystems composed of different types of cells that communicate and influence each other. While the critical role of stromal cells in affecting tumour growth is well established, the impact of mutant cancer cells on healthy surrounding tissues remains poorly defined. Here, using mouse intestinal organoids, we uncover a paracrine mechanism by which intestinal cancer cells reactivate foetal and regenerative YAP-associated transcriptional programmes in neighbouring wildtype epithelial cells, rendering them adapted to thrive in the tumour context. We identify the glycoprotein thrombospondin-1 (THBS1) as the essential factor that mediates non-cell-autonomous morphological and transcriptional responses. Importantly, Thbs1 is associated with bad prognosis in several human cancers. This study reveals the THBS1-YAP axis as the mechanistic link mediating paracrine interactions between epithelial cells in intestinal tumours.

Abstract

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has been consistently associated with unhealthy lifestyle behaviors and dietary practices. This study aimed to assess the dietary and lifestyle behaviors of adults after COVID-19 vaccine availability and their attitude toward the vaccine in selected Arab countries.MethodsA cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted between October 2021 and December 2021 using Google Forms (n = 2259). A multi-component questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic characteristics, attitudes toward the COVID-19 vaccine, and behavioral, dietary, and lifestyle responses after easing the restriction. Participants were given a score based on the sum of positive dietary and lifestyle changes. The generalized linear models were used to identify the association between positive dietary and lifestyle changes score and sociodemographic characteristics.ResultsWeight gain during the pandemic was reported by 39.5% of the participants, 36.1% reported ever getting infected with the COVID-19 virus, and 85% received at least one dose of the vaccine. The key adverse reactions of the COVID-19 vaccine were fatigue, headache, and joint pain, and the main reason for vaccination was protection against infection. Most participants were concerned about the vaccine side effects (45.8%) and inadequate testing (50.7%). After easing of restriction, 54.3% of the participants reduced the frequency of disinfecting objects, and 58.3% joined social events. Most dietary and lifestyle behaviors remained unchanged after vaccine availability but there was an increase in the time spent behind the screen for work (50.1%) and entertainment (42.9%). The results of the multivariate regression analyses revealed that older participants (p = 0.001), those with higher education (p = 0.010), and those working from home (p = 0.040) were more likely to have higher positive dietary and lifestyle changes scores.ConclusionAlthough most participants were concerned about vaccine safety, low vaccine hesitancy rates were observed among the study sample. The availability of the COVID-19 vaccines resulted in loosening some of the safety social measures among Arab adults but the negative impact of the pandemic on dietary and lifestyle behaviors remained unaltered.

Abstract

Background: Maternal depression and anxiety are significant public health concerns that play an important role in the health and well-being of mothers and children. The COVID-19 pandemic, the consequential lockdowns and related safety restrictions worldwide negatively affected the mental health of pregnant and postpartum women. Methods: This regional study aimed to develop a machine learning (ML) model for the prediction of maternal depression and anxiety. The study used a dataset collected from five Arab countries during the COVID-19 pandemic between July to December 2020. The population sample included 3569 women (1939 pregnant and 1630 postpartum) from five countries (Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain). The performance of seven machine learning algorithms was assessed for the prediction of depression and anxiety symptoms. Results: The Gradient Boosting (GB) and Random Forest (RF) models outperformed other studied ML algorithms with accuracy values of 83.3% and 83.2% for depression, respectively, and values of 82.9% and 81.3% for anxiety, respectively. The Mathew’s Correlation Coefficient was evaluated for the ML models; the Naïve Bayes (NB) and GB models presented the highest performance measures (0.63 and 0.59) for depression and (0.74 and 0.73) for anxiety, respectively. The features’ importance ranking was evaluated, the results showed that stress during pregnancy, family support, financial issues, income, and social support were the most significant values in predicting anxiety and depression. Conclusion: Overall, the study evidenced the power of ML models in predicting maternal depression and anxiety and proved to be an efficient tool for identifying and predicting the associated risk factors that influence maternal mental health. The deployment of machine learning models for screening and early detection of depression and anxiety among pregnant and postpartum women might facilitate the development of health prevention and intervention programs that will enhance maternal and child health in low- and middle-income countries.

Abstract

During pregnancy, woman’s diet is one of the most preeminent factors affecting mother and child’s health. Prior to the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, inadequate maternal diet and low adherence to dietary guidelines was reported among pregnant women in the Arab countries. Nowadays, COVID-19 infection during pregnancy is widely discussed among literature. However, there is limited data on the health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on non-infected pregnant women. This substantially larger group also suffered significant lifestyle changes during the lockdown period. The aim of the study is to characterize dietary patterns, intake and adherence to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) pregnancy guidelines before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Arab pregnant women. Using a specially designed questionnaire and using the snowball sampling method, the survey was carried out among a convenient sample of 1,939 pregnant women from five Arab countries. Our study found an increment in the consumption of cereals, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meats, and nuts that occurred during the pandemic compared to the preceding period. Despite this noticeable increase during the pandemic, the Arab pregnant women in this study had significantly lower adherence to the USDA pregnancy guidelines. The daily consumption of almost all food groups was lower than the USDA’s daily recommendations, except for fruits intake, which was higher than the daily standard. Demonstrated poor adherence to prenatal USDA dietary guidelines by Arab pregnant women can lead to numerous deficiencies and health risks among their offspring. In conclusion, our study showed that before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, poor adherence to dietary recommendations occurred in a considerable number of Arab pregnant women. The findings emphasize the need for nutritional education and intervention during prenatal visits.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the Eastern Mediterranean Region's food system's fragility posing severe challenges to maintaining healthy sustainable lifestyle. The aim of this cross-sectional study (N = 13,527 household's family members, mean age: 30.3 ±11.6, 80% women) is to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food consumption patterns and household's dietary diversity in 10 Eastern Mediterranean countries. A food frequency questionnaire was used to investigate the consumption patterns along with the calculation of the Food Consumption Score (FCS), a proxy indicator of dietary diversity. Data collected on cooking attitudes, shopping and food stock explore the community mitigation measures. In the overall population, before and during the pandemic, most food groups were consumed less or equal to 4 times per week. As evident from our findings and considering that the pandemic may be better, but it's not over, small to moderate changes in food consumption patterns in relatively short time periods can become permanent and lead to substantial poor dietary diversity over time. While it is a priority to mitigate the immediate impact, one area of great concern is the long-term effects of this pandemic on dietary patterns and dietary diversity in Eastern Mediterranean households. To conclude, the COVID-19 crisis revealed the region's unpreparedness to deal with a pandemic. While the aggressive containment strategy was essential for most countries to help prevent the spread, it came at a high nutritional cost, driving poor dietary diversity.

Abstract

Herein, cadmium bromide thin film devices are designed for possible use in communication technology. The 1.0 μ m thin layer of CdBr2 is sandwiched between two Au (1.0 μ m thick) layers using the thermal evaporation technique under a vacuum pressure of 10-5 mbar. The Au/CdBr2/Au devices are structurally morphologically and electrically characterized. It is observed that the hexagonal cadmium bromide exhibits large lattice mismatches with cubic Au substrates. The randomly distributed nano- rod like grains is accompanied with average surface roughness of ~26 nm. When an ac signal of low amplitude is imposed between the terminals of the Au/CdBr2/Au devices, a negative capacitance effect in the frequency domain of 10-1800 MHz is observed. In addition, analysis of the impedance spectra in the same domain has shown that the device behaves as band pass/stop filters suitable for 4G technology. The microwave based standard analysis of the Au/CdBr2/Au band filters have shown that it displays a notch ( f c o) frequency of 2.0 GHz. The cutoff frequency at f c o reaches 7.86 GHz. The features of the Au/CdBr2/Au devices nominate it for use as microwave resonators and as negative capacitance devices suitable for; 4G technology, noise reduction and for parasitic capacitance cancellation.

Abstract

Herein stacked layers of metallic indium (150 nm) and platinum (50–250 nm) thin films are fabricated as a terahertz/gigahertz filters. Indium thin films are produced by the thermal evaporation technique under a vacuum pressure of 10− 5 mbar and coated with Pt nanosheets using the ionic coating technique. It is observed that Pt nanosheets increased the light transmittance and reflectance in In/Pt films. In/Pt stacked layers displayed lower; dielectric constant, optical conductivity and terahertz cutoff frequency values as compared indium thin slabs. In/Pt stacked layers is found appropriate as tunable terahertz filters. In addition, the Drude-Lorentz analyses on these optical layers have shown that In/Pt stacks exhibit plasmon frequency values (8.7–17.3 GHz) that make them suitable for 5G/6G technology as band filters. The optical conductivity parameters including the drift mobility, free electron density and scattering time at femtosecond level are also determined. As a confirming technique an ac signals propagating with driving frequency in the range of 0.01–0.50 GHz is imposed between the terminals of In/Pt stacked layers. It is shown that the microwave cutoff frequency is widely tunable achieving values of 40 GHz at driving frequency of 0.50 GHz. The features of the In/Pt stacked layers are promising as they show properties of tunable terahertz/gigahertz filters.

Abstract

Herein transparent iron nanosheets deposited by the ionic coating technique onto glass and WO3 dielectric lenses are studied and characterized. The thickness of Fe nanosheets is varied in the range of 70–350 nm. It is observed that the transmittance and reflectance of the Fe nanosheets are highly affected by the layer roughness. Coating of iron nanosheets onto WO3 dielectric lenses increases the light absorption of WO3 by more than 240 times and red‐shifts the energy bandgap. Remarkable enhancements in the dielectric constant and in the optical conductivity are achieved via Fe coatings. In addition, iron coated dielectric lenses show higher terahertz cutoff limits varying in the range of 1.0–30 THz. Iron nanosheets remarkably increase the free charge carrier density and plasmon frequency in the infrared range of light. Moreover, the temperature dependent electrical conductivity shows high temperature stability and an increased electrical conductivity by more than 7 orders of magnitude by coating WO3 with 70 nm thick Fe nanosheets. The stability of the electrical conductivity at low temperatures and the wide range of terahertz cutoff limits in addition to the well‐enhanced light absorbability makes the iron coated tungsten oxide dielectric lenses promising for multifunction optoelectronic applications. Abstract

Amorphous thin films of SnO2, prepared by a vacuum evaporation technique under a pressure of 10− 5 mbar, are employed as electro-optical filters suitable for microwave, infrared, and visible light communication technologies. The filters perform as optical layers, exhibiting optical transitions within an energy band gap of 3.62 eV, with the band gap containing energy band tails of widths of 0.63 eV. In addition, dielectric dispersion analyses on the optical filters show their ideality for high k-gate dielectric applications. Wide tunability in the dielectric response is observed in these films. Moreover, analyses of the optical conductivity and terahertz cutoff frequency spectra have shown that SnO2 films exhibit resonance of optical signals suitable for infrared and visible light communication technology as well. When excited with infrared light of energy of 1.38 eV, the drift mobility and free hole concentration in these films reach 11.72 cm2/Vs and 2 × 1017 cm− 3, respectively. Furthermore, the device exhibits a negative resistance effect in the microwave range of 0.1–1.80 GHz, and terahertz cutoff frequency values in the range of 10 GHz − 48 THz. Abstract

Non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) accounts for 85% of lung cancers, the leading cause of cancer associated deaths in the US and worldwide. Within NSCLC tumors, there is a subpopulation of cancer cells termed cancer stem cells (CSCs) which exhibit stem-like properties that drive NSCLC progression, metastasis, relapse, and therapeutic resistance. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-bound nanoparticles secreted by cells that carry vital messages for short- and long-range intercellular communication. Numerous studies have implicated NSCLC CSC-derived EVs in the factors associated with NSCLC lethality. In this review, we have discussed mechanisms of EV-directed crosstalk between CSCs and cells of the tumor microenvironment that promote stemness, tumor progression and metastasis in NSCLC. The mechanistic studies discussed herein have provided insights for developing novel NSCLC diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and strategies to therapeutically target the NSCLC CSC niche. 196. Growth of Polycrystalline n- CrSe2 Nanosheets Onto p –Si Substrates and their Applications as Rectifiers and Gigahertz Band Filters.

Abstract

In the current study polycrystalline nanosheets of CrSe2 of thicknesses of 100 nm are deposited onto p - type silicon substrate by a vacuum evaporation technique under a vacuum pressure of 10–5 mbar. Experimental and theoretical structural investigations have shown the preferred growth of trigonal CrSe2. The unit cell parameters being a = b = 3.520 Å,c = 5.889 Å and P 3 ¯ m 1 164 fits well with the standards of trigonal CrSe2 structure. Nanosheets of chromium selenide displayed low defect density of the order of 1010 lines/cm2 along the a - and b axes. Surface morphology studies have shown that CrSe2 nanosheets is composed of spherical grains of average sizes of 200 nm. Optically the interfacing of the n– type CrSe2 nanosheets with p - type Si results in formation of a conduction and valence band offsets of 0.95 eV and 0.47 eV, respectively. These band offsets were found sufficient to allow running the Si/CrSe2 interfaces as pn junction devices. The devices displayed a biasing dependent rectification ratios (asymmetry). The ratios which reached value of 70 can be varied with the applied voltage. Deep analyses of the current transport mechanism of these rectifiers have shown the domination by thermionic and tunneling mechanisms under forward and reverse biasing conditions, respectively. Moreover the pn junction device showed features of band filters with cutoff frequency values suiting gigahertz technology making the device attractive for multifunction operations. Abstract

Herein Ag2La thin films are fabricated by a vacuum coating method and subjected to a thermal annealing process. The thermally heated of films at 200 °C increased the crystallite sizes and improved the crystalline structure of the films. For these films the electrical conductivity measurements which were handled in the temperature range of 300-440 K. The conductivity analyses indicated that the transport of charged particles is dominated by the thermionic emission and by the variable range hopping conduction mechanisms.
