Pocapharaptinus aboakyer Akotsen and Philips, new species Figs. 21, 22 & 31 Type material. Holotype: S. Africa, W. Cape Province, Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, 33.42 S- 21.57 E / 1.7.1998; E-Y: 3240, Groundtraps, leg. Tom Berry. Diagnosis. This species can be characterized by the visible pronotal surface extending posteriorly between setal tufts in a narrow triangular shape and forming an ~ 45 ˚angle posteriorly (Fig. 31); a lack of distinctive thick bristle like setae laterally on the pronotum separate from the flocculent pronotal setae (similar to P. soutpanensis); pronounced humeral and apical patches of white setae on elytra (Figs 21, 22). Description. Color reddish brown; body oval, convex. Length 2.2���2.3 mm. Head dorsally mainly smooth but with scattered setose tubercles in a band between eyes, setae small and erect; tubercles distinct; setae short, recumbent and erect; convergent setal tufts on either side of midline between eyes present; carina posterior to antennal fossae absent. Pronotum with visible surface extending posteriorly between setal tufts broadly triangular, forming an ~ 45 �� angle posteriorly; base of setal tufts arising distinctly above cuticular surface on curved carinae, carinae angled ~ 45 �� from surface, anterior margin swollen, especially at middle; lateral spines distinct from but blending into tufts, thickness similar to erect elytral setae. Pocapharaptinus, Philips and Akotsen, new genus Type species. Pocapharaptinus m��llerae Akotsen and Philips Diagnosis. The genus is characterized by long erect setae forming four loose tufts dorsally and laterally on the pronotum. The majority of the remaining pronotal surface is densely covered with flocculent, wooly, tan-colored setae that obscures the cuticular surface. When viewed anteriorly, the visible pronotal cuticle medially is triangular in shape. The elytral surface also has distinct puncture rows in addition to rows of recumbent and erect setae. Description. Body: overall, small to moderate, 1.2���2.8mm long, oval or oblong-oval, convex; light to dark reddish brown. Head: Eyes small, round to somewhat triangular, moderately robust, generally not visible from above; interocular space about 3 X eye width; vertex convex, slightly rounded, cavity present beneath eye and laterad of antennal insertion; antennae filiform, 11 -segmented, antennal setal length variable from short to long, second antennomere inserted off center of scape near lateral edge, inter-antennal space narrow, with acute carina, slightly to distinctly projecting, more so anterioventrally; clypeus triangular, width ~ 1 / 2 head width below eyes; anterior margin of labrum broadly rounded; labial palpi 3 -segmented; maxillary palpi 4 -segmented; mandibular apex acute, lacking additional tooth; mentum triangular, with cavity. Pronotum: overall, square to slightly elongate; covered with thick spongy or dense setae; two pairs coarse, sub-vertical setal peaks laterally and dorsally, lateral peak elongate, with sparsely spaced coarse setae forming loose tufts, dorsal peak extending posteriorly at middle to near center; cuticle visible, largely devoid of setae both laterally around tufts and anterio-medially to near middle of disc, subtriangular to nearly transverse. Elytra: overall, convex, humeral angles rounded, punctures small, distinct, arranged in 10 rows; punctures sub-equal in size but variable in depth; each elytron with anterior and posterior patch of white setae on all species except P. soutpanensis. Ventral sclerites: Prosternum narrow, elongate, 5 X as long as wide, extending onto mesosternum (Fig. 2); mesosternum as long as wide, ~ 1 / 2 length of metasternum, anteriorly adjacent to procoxae with transversely flattened, rounded projections extending ventrally; metasternum transverse, broadly emarginate posteriorly. Abdominal ventrites with all sutures distinct, 2���5 subequal, 1 and 2 distinctly longer, 4 shortest (Fig. 3). Legs: dorsal and ventral surface of tibiae and tarsi covered with fine recumbent narrow scale-like setae, also with several longer golden-yellow depressed narrow setae; metatarsomere 2 X length of pro-and mesotarsomere. Etymology. Derived from the Greek ���poca��� (meaning hair or wool), referring to the thick, dense pronotal setae; and ���pharan��� (meaning cleft or gully), which describes the cleft in the dense pronotal setae. These words are combined with the most speciose ptinid genus name Ptinus. Comments. Species are concentrated in western and southwestern South Africa (Fig. 40). While species found in western South Africa experience winter rains (June - Sept.) with a long dry season during the summer (Dec. - Mar.), other species in the Western Cape Province are found in regions mainly with a summer rainfall pattern. All taxa are flightless, a characteristic often found in spider beetles that exploit dry dung as a food source in xeric habitats (Philips 2000). One species has been reared from dry pellets of rock hyrax or dassie (Procavia capensis [Pallas]), suggesting that dung may be the preferred food source of species in this genus (Philips, unpublished). Relationships. Philips (2000) noted that precise relationships of most spider beetle genera hypothesized from morphology are obscured due to convergent evolution of features associated with flightlessness, which may be an adaptation for water conservation in a xeric habitat. Many genera superficially look alike and little phylogenetic work has been done to support any purported relationships with the exception of Bell��s (1985) and Philips (2000). Hence Pocapharaptinus is one of numerous flightless taxa in southern Africa with unclear affinities. One possible related lineage is southern African Ptinus, as it shares a number of potential synapomorphies with this clade including: a similar cuticular color of pale to dark reddish brown, possession of two white setal patches anteriorly and posteriorly on the elytra, erect and recumbent longitudinal rows of vestiture along and between elytral punctures rows, and similarly shaped elongate legs and antennae. Distribution and biogeography. Endemic to South Africa, species of Pocapharaptinus are found in a surprisingly wide variety of habitats, including Cape Mountain passes at 2000m elevation, succulent deserts, and coastal scrub (Fig. 40). The distribution of the genus ranges from northern Namaqualand southward to the southwestern Cape Region (between 28 ˚S and 36 ˚S latitude) extending eastward to just beyond Mossel Bay (22.41 ˚E). Species found in the western part of the distribution occur in semi-desert with rainfall Pocapharaptinus. Philips and Foster (2004) suggest that the limited distribution of the southern African spider beetle taxa indicate that this greater region is the center of origin for many ptinid species, including those of Pocapharaptinus. Some species of this new genus have allopatric populations that appear to be separated by geographic barriers. For example, P. acanthos has been collected only near Cape Agulhas and Paarl, two localities in the southwest cape region that are partially separated by mountain ranges. Similarly, P. soutpanensis and P. m��llerae are both found north and south of the Olifants River. The populations in each species are morphologically indistinguishable, but there is always the possibility of cryptic species. Alternatively and we think more likely explanations are that the distribution of P. acanthos is due to a collecting artifact, and for the other two species, the Olifants river does not appear to be an insurmountable barrier as one might expect most likely due to periodic lack of river water flow historically (Harrison et al. 2003). Subfamily: Ernobiinae Tribe: Ernobiini

The beetle families of the Bostrichiformia—the Derodontidae, Dermestidae, Bostrichidae, and Anobiidae – in the Maritime Provinces of Canada are surveyed. Seventy-four native and established introduced species are now known to occur including 30 found in New Brunswick, 65 in Nova Scotia, and 29 on Prince Edward Island. Seven species are newly recorded from New Brunswick, 24 from Prince Edward Island, and 37 from Nova Scotia for a total of 68 new provincial records. A total of 31 species are newly recorded in the Maritime Provinces as a whole, three of which, Dinoderus minutus (Fabricius), Ernobius filicornis LeConte, and Ernobius granulatus LeConte, are newly recorded in Canada. Two species, Ptilinus pruinosus Casey and Caenocara oculata (Say), are removed from the faunal list of New Brunswick, and one subspecies, Attagenus unicolor unicolor (Brahm), is removed from the faunal list of Prince Edward Island since no specimens or published records could be found to support their presence. Additional records of six other exotic species intercepted at ports and points in the region, but not established here, are also reported. A specimen of the Palearctic Ptinus bicinctus Sturm collected in 1915 in Nova Scotia, establishes a new early timeline for this species in North America. The fauna of the region is distinguished by the very large proportion (37 of 74 species, i.e. 50%) of which is introduced. It is also distinguished by the large proportion (22 of 37 species, i.e. 60%) of the indigenous, native fauna that is apparently rare, perhaps as a result of the historical impact of forest management practices on these wood-boring, saproxylic species. The fauna is further evaluated from both zoogeographic and ecological perspectives.

Cryptopeniculus nigrosetus Philips, new species (Figs. 1���16) DIAGNOSIS. This species can be recognized by the two elongate pronotal crests consisting of flocculant setae covered by combs of darker elongate but thick setae with their tips converging dorsally (Figs 1, 3). The crests are separated most widely anteriorly and converge posteriorly, becoming fused near the pronotal base. Additionally, the smooth, globular shape of the elytra (Fig. 1), the constriction and short longitudinal ridges at the elytral bases (Fig. 6), the ratio of ventrite lengths (Fig. 8), and the pronounced antennal fossae (Fig. 4) extending laterally from the antennal insertions should help differentiate this species from the other known African taxa. DESCRIPTION. Holotype. Sex not determined. Length from anterior edge of pronotum to apex of elytra 2.10 mm. Color light to dark reddish black (Figs 1���2). Head (Fig. 4): surface covered with scattered usually appressed short stout setae, those on frons above antennal fossae more erect, vertex surface adjacent to pronotum rough, frons distinctly smoother; antennal fossae separated by a ridge about 2 / 3 the maximum scape width, laterally with deep groove; clypeus crescent shaped with a pronounced posterior margin forming a ridge; labrum slightly emarginate, anterior margin with row of dense setae; labial and maxillary palps fusiform (Figs 12���13), mentum equilateral triangular shape (Fig. 14), mandible inner surface with indistinct tooth near middle (Fig. 15); eyes small and slightly projecting especially posteriorly, maximum length about as long as fourth antennomere, approximately 12 ommatidia at maximum length, 9 ommatidia at maximum width; antennae after scape gradually expanding in diameter to apex, second through 10 th antennomeres subequal, ultimate about 50 % longer than penultimate. Pronotum (Figs 1���3): setal clumps forming two crests in very broad ���V��� shape arising at anterior 1 / 5 at edge of abrupt chitinous triangular shaped ridge on either side of middle, lateral edges curving gradually posteriorly converging through to posterior 1 / 3 with setal crests continuing to posterior margin; crests formed of tightly spaced, juxtaposed, overlapping, long, brown to nearly black narrow setae, setal origins visible as projections around perimeter of crests, angled towards middle of crest, apical portion of setae strongly curved, tips converging at crest peak; basally setae angled anterio��obliquely medially; beneath elongate setae a layer of paler colored flocculant setae in shape of broad ���U���; anterior edge lined with erect setae similar to those forming external covering of crests, setae continuing onto lateral edge but not restricted, clump of setae laterally also forming loose tuft with setal tips converging dorsally to height below crest; latero��ventrally pronotum covered with white or light colored closely appressed setae obscuring surface, setae extending along lateral posterior edge; perimeter of pronotum with large deep punctures approximately in a row, others more scattered, setae arising from conical projections producing distinctly uneven surface, medially a distinct narrow longitudinal groove between crests with setal inserts on either side. Elytra (Figs 1, 6): Surface glabrous except for very small widely spaced puncture rows, more visible laterally; punctures sometimes with small, short, usually appressed setae, sometimes more numerous near elytral apices, occasionally at base between grooves with thicker, erect, white appressed setae; laterally with single row of small brown recumbent overlapping setae extending from near base to about midpoint, a second row below of similarly located and spaced, appressed white setae more obliquely aligned, a third row extending along epipleura to about midpoint of white, closely appressed, very dense, obliquely aligned setae; near apex along suture with oblique parallel fine wrinkles. Genitalia: Male parameres (Figs 9���10) gradually decreasing in width towards apex, tips curved inwards, blunt, apical half with scattered setae; median lobe gradually narrowed to apex. Female genitalic coxites elongate (Fig. 11); stylus apex broad, slightly excavated; baculum elongate; spermatheca unsclerotized, not apparent. Sexual dimorphism. Length from anterior edge of pronotum to apex of elytra averages 1.97 0.16 mm (n = 25). Specimens from the most northern site have more pronounced carinae along the lateral margins of the interantennal space. They are also slightly darker, have two widely spaced long erect setal rows on the dorsal surface of the elytra, and the legs are slightly stouter. ETYMOLOGY. Based on the Latin adjective for black and noun for hair in reference to the coarse black setae on the pronotum. DISTRIBUTION. This monotypic genus ranges from about 10 km north of Lambert���s Bay in the Western Cape Province northwards through to near Nariep (approximately 30 km southwest of Garies) in the Northern Cape Province (Fig. 16). BIOLOGY. This species may be associated with coastal hummocks, vegetated dunes and other sandy habitats where it is undoubtedly scavenging on organic matter, most likely dung or other accumulated detritus. It has been captured with pitfalls usually set for 60 days and baited with faeces, fermenting bananas, and meat. Cryptopeniculus Philips, new genus Type species. Cryptopeniculus nigrosetus, new species DIAGNOSIS. This genus can be recognized by a pronotum with large thick setal tufts in a ���V��� shape covering most of the surface and composed of thick, strongly recurved or recumbent and approximately parallel setae loosely appressed against and covering pale brown or tan flocculant setae which is sometimes more exposed near the base. There is a distinct longitudinal medial depression between the anterior 2 / 3 of the pronotal tufts. Additionally, the light to dark reddish black cuticle color, the strongly convex and nearly glabrous elytral surface, and elongate legs are further distinguishing characteristics. There is also a pronounced ridge anterior of the antennal insertions, oriented transversely and obliquely, about the length of the scape and as high as the scape width. DESCRIPTION. Head: Robust, eyes slightly visible from above, eye approximately rounded, except truncate opposite antennal insertion; vertex slightly convex; cavity beneath eye and laterade of antennal insertion where scape can fit, most depressed at eye base, interantennal space moderately broad, slightly depressed at middle; clypeus posteriorly with strongly pronounced edge; genae expanded laterally; labrum width equal to less than 1 / 3 head width below eyes, anterior edge rounded; maxillary palp four segmented, labial palp three segmented; antennae filiform, 11 segmented, second antennomere inserted off center of scape near lateral edge; mandible with blunt apex, lacking distinct second tooth, approximately straight externally; mentum triangular, lacking cavity. Elytra: Globular; strongly, smoothly convex, distinctly longer than wide; surface predominantly glabrous, punctures small, shallow, very indistinct, arranged in longitudinal rows; lateral edge of basal half with a distinct carinae above epipleura, extending opposite pronotal base through to middle; basal constriction interrupted by several short longitudinal carina forming pockets. Legs: Elongate, apically capitate, femora at basal half narrow, abruptly expanding around middle, tibia narrow, gradually increasing in length from base to apex, as long as respective femora except metatibia longer than metafemor; 1 st and 5 th tarsomere moderately long, 2 nd through 4 th distinctly shorter. ETYMOLOGY. The generic name is derived from Greek adjective for hidden (crypto) and the Latin noun for a brush or sponge (peniculus) in reference to the flocculant like setae on the pronotum which are largely obscured by dark elongate setae overlain on the surface of the former. REMARKS. Like many of the spider beetle species where both sexes are flightless, it is difficult to determine the sex without a dissection unless the genitalia is partially extruded from the abdomen. Although the pronotal shape is unique to this species, it is approached in form by several species representing a second undescribed genus. Cryptopeniculus can easily be separated from this group by a broad, rather than narrow and ridge��like, interantennal space. Additionally, the nearly impunctate and glabrous elytra of Cryptopeniculus is in sharp contrast to the that of second new genus which has longitudinal rows of deep punctures, the more typical ptinine setal rows formed of recumbent and erect setae, and the presence (usually) of humeral and apical setal maculations. RELATIONSHIPS. This genus is one of a wide variety of flightless species found in South Africa and in many other parts of the world. Precise relationships may be obscured by the evolution of features associated with flightlessness which adapt this species and so many others for a scavenging lifestyle in usually xeric habitats (see discussion in Philips 2000). Morphological traits include the very convex shape of the elytra, reduced elytral setation, loss of wings, and fusion of the metacoxae to the metasternum. Cryptopeniculus may represent a clade outside the lineage of species recognized by some as the Gibbiinae (e.g. Bell��s 1985) or the Gibbium species��group (Bell��s 1982). Possible convergent similarities between these clades include the flocculant pronotal setae and the smooth globular elytra found in both Cryptopeniculus and gibbiines such as Mezium. Alternatively, it might be one of the basal lineages of the Meziini sensu Bell��s (1985). Based on limited distributions of the southern African taxa, it is likely that most if not all of these originated in this region, including this new species and, for example, the taxa of Damarus found in the coastal areas of adjacent Namibia. Some of these generic level clades are obviously closely related based on a large number of synapomorphies (which will be investigated in a later study). But for many other taxa, which look superficially like species of Ptinus, it remains unknown if there is either a single common ancestor or if many separate origins (which we hypothesize as most likely) were involved in creating the incredible diversity of spider beetles known from this region., Published as part of Philips, T. [EN] The genus Pitnus Gorham, 1880 is revised and divided into two subgenera: Pitnus s. str. and Octopitnus subg. n. The subgenus Pitnus includes the following species and subspecies: Pitnus (P.) pygmaeus Gorham, 1880 (type species), P. (P.) pintae pintae (Franz, 1985), comb. n., P. (P.) pintae grandis ssp. n., P. (P.) falli sp. n., P. (P.) pacatus sp. n., P. (P.) parvus sp. n., P. (P.) galapagoensis galapagoensis (Franz, 1985), comb. n., P. (P.) galapagoensis lapidicola ssp. n., P. (P.) tucsonianus sp. n., P. The peculiar disjunct distribution of the genus Pitnus (in and near Central America and in Australia) is postulated to be the vestige of a palaeoantarctic distribution (South America-Antarctica-Australia) in the late Cretaceous. Dorcatomiella guamensis, new species. Unicolorous pitchy brown, with sericeous pubescence forming light and dark patches according to the direction of the hairs. On the thorax this radiates from the mid point of each side of the base forming a basal light patch on each side and a feeble median crest. On the elytra it is directed mainly backwards but with a transverse outward sweep in the middle of the disk and another near the apex. Basal to the first of these, the hairs are mostly dull golden with silvery hairs intermixed, and between the two transverse sweeps entirely dull golden forming vague dark patches on the elytra. National audience; Analysis of larval frass for identification of wood boring insects of the family Ptinidae (Coleoptera). Among xylophagous insects of the family Ptinidae, the common furniture beetle Anobium punctatum (Degeer, 1774), with a worldwide distribution, is the most commonly found species in heritage sites and places. Besides, other species like the furniture beetle Oligomerus ptilinoides (Wollaston, 1854) and the library beetle Nicobium castaneum (Olivier, 1790), are often found in the same places. They all cause extensive damage to various objects, and the traces they leave (flight holes, size and shape of their excrement, presence or absence of pupae, etc.) differ among species. This study presents a comparative, morphological and statistical approach for studying the clues left by these three species so as to differentiate and identify them in the absence of larvae or imagoes.; Parmi les Insectes xylophages de la famille des Ptinidae, la petite vrillette Anobium punctatum (Degeer, 1774), espèce cosmopolite, est la plus fréquemment rencontrée dans les espaces et lieux patrimoniaux. Toutes occasionnent de nombreux dégâts sur divers objets patrimoniaux et les traces qu'elles génèrent (trous d'émergence, taille et forme des déjections, présence ou non de coque de nymphose, etc.) ne sont pas identiques d'une espèce à l'autre. Pour les trois espèces considérées, cette étude présente une approche comparative, morphologique et statistique, de ces traces d'activité permettant ainsi leur différenciation et leur identification en l'absence de larves ou d'imagos.
