The influence of smoke on the aerosol loading in the free troposphere over Thessaloniki, Greece is examined in this paper. Ten cases during 2001–2005 were identified when very high aerosol optical depth values in the free troposphere were observed with a UV-Raman lidar. Particle dispersion modeling (FLEXPART) and satellite hot spot fire detection (ATSR) showed that these high free tropospheric aerosol optical depths are mainly attributed to the advection of smoke plumes from biomass burning regions over Thessaloniki. The biomass burning regions were found to extend across Russia in the latitudinal belt between 45° N–55° N, as well as in Eastern Europe (Baltic countries, Western Russia, Belarus, and the Ukraine). The highest frequency of agricultural fires occurred during the summer season (mainly in August). The data collected allowed the optical characterization of the smoke aerosols that arrived over Greece, where limited information has so far been available. Two-wavelength backscatter lidar measurements showed that the backscatter-related Ångström exponent ranged between 0.5 and 2.4 indicating a variety of particle sizes. UV-Raman lidar measurements showed that for smoke particles the extinction to backscatter ratios (so-called lidar ratios) varied between 40 sr for small particles to 100 sr for large particles. Dispersion model estimations of the carbon monoxide tracer concentration profiles for smoke particles indicate that the variability of the optical parameters is a function of the age of the smoke plumes. This information could be useful on the lidar community for reducing uncertainty in the aerosol backscatter coefficient determination due to the lidar ratio assumption, starting from a simply elastic backscatter lidar as the first satellite-borne lidar CALIPSO.

We present a 3D multi-year monthly mean climatology of Saharan dust advection over Europe using an area-optimized pure dust CALIPSO product. The product has been developed by applying EARLINET-measured dust lidar ratios and depolarization-based dust discrimination methods and it is shown to have a very good agreement in terms of AOD when compared to AERONET over Europe/North Africa and MODIS over Mediterranean. The processing of such purely observational data reveals the certain seasonal patterns of dust transportation towards Europe and the Atlantic Ocean. The physical and optical properties of the dust layer are identified for several areas near the Saharan sources, over the Mediterranean and over continental Europe.

In this study we examine the effect of natural perturbations on cirrus cloud cover in the tropics and we look for possible signal of cirrus contrails in tropical air traffic regions focussing on Southeast Asia, a region that has received much less attention than the well investigated North Atlantic and North American air traffic corridors. The analysis is based on the latest version of the ISCCP D2 cirrus cloud dataset and covers the period 1984 - 2000. Four parameters were examined for their relation with cirrus cloud trends: deep convective clouds from ISCCP, vertical velocities, relative humidity and air temperature at 200 mb from ECMWF/ERA40. The results show that there is a strong correlation between cirrus clouds and dynamical parameters (deep convective clouds, vertical velocities) over Southeast Asia, explaining a significant part of the tropical cirrus cloud variability. After removing seasonality, the ENSO signal becomes dominant on cirrus, on deep convective clouds and on vertical velocities over regions of the western and the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Over Southeast Asia, the average decrease in cirrus during the strong 1997/98 El Nino event was about 6% cloud cover or ~25% of the regional mean. In order to search for possible signal of cirrus contrails over S. E. Asia, we calculated trends in cirrus coverage over tropical regions with high air traffic after removing the ENSO effect. The results show that there is a small positive trend in cirrus clouds over the S. E. Asia air corridors during winter (+0.1% cover/decade), which is not statistically significant and is related to small positive trends in deep convective clouds. In summer, cirrus clouds are anti-correlated with deep convective clouds over this region and the trends are opposite. The negative trends in cirrus clouds, which are observed in the summer (-4.5% cover/ decade), are related to trends in dynamical and thermo-dynamical parameters. It is shown that cirrus clouds are statistically significant correlated with vertical velocities and air temperature at 200 mb (correlations of -0.7 and -0.6, respectively), explaining the highest part of the long-term variability of cirrus clouds over S. E. Asia. Over the Caribbean air corridors, on the other hand, there are significant increases in cirrus cloudiness by about 2.5% per decade in winter (99% confidence level) and 2.7% cover/ decade in the summer (95% confidence level), part of which is also related to trends in dynamical and thermo-dynamical parameters. According to our findings, it is difficult to detect possible effects of regional persistent contrails on cirrus cloud trends over the S. E. Asia air traffic corridors. This is because in winter there are not statistically significant trends in cirrus clouds and in summer trends in dynamics and thermo-dynamics mask this issue. Taking also into account that flight frequencies and fuel consumption are moderate over the tropical air traffic corridors, it makes it even more difficult to detect and quantify any possible anthropogenic effects.

[1] In this work, we investigate the issue of the turnaround in ozone trends of the recently homogenized Umkehr ozone record of Arosa, Switzerland, which is the longest Umkehr data set, extending from 1956 to date, using different statistical methods. All methods show statistically significant negative ozone trends from 1970 to 1995 in the upper stratosphere (above 32.6 km) throughout the course of the year as well as in the lower stratosphere (below 23.5 km) mainly during winter to spring, which can be partially attributed to dynamical changes. Over the recent period (1996–2004) the year-round trends in the lower stratosphere become positive and are more positive during the winter to spring period. The results also show changes in upper stratospheric ozone trends after 1996, which are, however, not statistically significant at 95% if aerosol correction is applied on the retrieved data. This lack of significant trend changes during the recent period in the upper stratosphere is regionally coherent with recent results derived from upper stratospheric ozone data recorded by lidars, microwave radiometers, and satellite instruments at an adjacent location. Although the positive change in trends after 1996 both for upper and lower stratospheric ozone is in line with the reduction of the emissions of ozone-depleting substances from the successful implementation of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments, we recommend, because of lack of significance for the upper stratospheric trends, repeating this analysis in a few years in order to overcome ambiguous results for documentation of the turnaround of upper stratospheric ozone.

In this study we present a complex case study of a Stratosphere-to-Troposphere Transport (STT) event down to the surface of a low topography region in Northern Greece, during the second fortnight of March 2000. During this event our surface station at Livadi (23°15 E/40°32 N, 850 m a.s.l.), was influenced by very different synoptic systems developing over Eastern Europe, N. America and the N. Atlantic, the last one evolving to a cut-off low over France/Spain. This is the first study, to our knowledge, that presents a down to the surface STT event in the eastern Mediterranean. The intrusion is primarily captured with the use of the cosmogenic radionuclide 7Be, which increased to 9.07 mBq m-3 and 9.37 mBq m-3 on 30 and 31 March 2000, respectively. A 7Be concentration of around 8 mBq m-3 recorded during parallel measurements at Thessaloniki (20 m a.s.l.) gives strong evidence that air of stratospheric origins has even gone down to sea level. A rapid increase of 10–15 ppb is also observed in the surface ozone concentration on 31 March 2000. The relative increase of both tracers is consistent with a volume fraction of stratospheric air at the surface of about 5%, but the substantial increase in 7Be flags more clearly the event. Trajectory analyses, in conjunction with the evolution of the synoptic situation described by potential vorticity maps, are used for the exact identification of the different intrusions and the attribution of each intruding parcel of stratospheric air to a certain filament of high PV. Finally, the persistency of the stratospheric layers in the troposphere is another interesting point of this case study. The vast majority of the trajectories spent 7–10 days in the troposphere before reaching the surface at Livadi station.

[1] Model studies show that changes in photodissociation rates resulting from changes in ozone column densities induce changes in lower tropospheric ozone, which vary significantly with location and time of the year. The validity of the model results is tested against daily total ozone and ground level ozone at three selected stations (Samoa, Mauna Loa, and Hohenpeissenberg). Observational data for a period of more than 1 decade have been analyzed. Comparisons are made of model-simulated distribution of ozone and its precursors (NOx and CO) at the three stations. Further comparisons are made of observed and model-calculated sensitivity in surface ozone to reduction in ozone column densities. Calculations performed with a global-scale chemical transport model (CTM) with extensive ozone chemistry reproduce well the observed levels and seasonal distribution of NOx, CO, and ozone at remote background stations (Samoa and Mauna Loa) and at stations in more polluted regions (Hohenpeissenberg). A chemical box model is used to demonstrate the chemical link between surface ozone changes and changes in total ozone for different NOx levels. Model studies and analysis of the observational data show that ground level ozone at the remote, low-NOx stations of Mauna Loa and Samoa is correlated positively with total ozone, with an exception at Mauna Loa during winter months. A reduction in ozone column densities, which leads to enhanced photochemical activity, reduces ozone levels at ground level. The sensitivity of surface ozone to changes in total ozone is particularly large in the low-NOx regime at Samoa. An anticorrelation between ground level ozone and total ozone is found at the Hohenpeissenberg station both in the observational data and in the model results during wintertime with high NOx levels. Enhanced photochemical activity leads to enhanced ozone production. There is, however, a disagreement between the observed and CTM-modeled sensitivity in surface ozone to ozone column density during the summer months at Hohenpeissenberg. The strong anticorrelation found in the observations, giving increases in surface ozone at low ozone column densities, is not present in the CTM model studies. It is suggested that a correlation between low ozone column densities and stagnant high-pressure systems is an important cause for the observed anticorrelation.

Publisher Summary 7Be is a cosmogenic radionuclide with radioactive decay half-life of 53.3 days and it is a naturally occurring gamma emitter (477.6 keV). The bombardment of atmospheric constituents by cosmic rays (CR) leads to the fragmentation of light atmospheric nuclei, primarily 12C, 14N and 16O, thus giving rise to the production of various cosmogenic isotopes. Neutrons and protons, produced in about equal numbers as a result of the nucleonic cascade initiated near the top of the atmosphere by the most energetic primary component of cosmic radiation, are mainly responsible for nuclear disintegrations in the atmosphere. Low-energy interactions by nucleons with energies of 100–200 MeV have the largest contribution to the isotope production. Since protons experience intense and rapid loss of their energy due to ionization, the production of the majority of radionuclides is attributed to neutrons.

[1] Continuous measurements of peroxy radicals were carried out using the chemical amplification technique during three intensive FREE Tropospheric EXperiments, (FREETEX) in 1996, 1998 and 2001 at the Jungfraujoch (3,580 m asl) in the Swiss Alps, in combination covering the period of ozone build-up from late winter to late spring. The monthly medians of the peroxy radical measurements from 10:00 to 13:00 UT in February, March, April, and May, after filtering out the more cloudy conditions, show a clear seasonal behaviour with a gradual increase of the peroxy radical mixing ratios from around 12 pptv in February to around 20 pptv in May. This data represents among the first semi-continuous seasonal observations of peroxy radical concentrations, which indicates the important and possibly dominant role of in-situ photochemistry in the observed ozone build up from winter to spring in the lower free-troposphere over the Alps.

Increased UV-B through stratospheric ozone depletion leads to an increased chemical activity in the lower atmosphere (the troposphere). The effect of stratospheric ozone depletion on tropospheric ozone is small (though significant) compared to the ozone generated anthropogenically in areas already experiencing air pollution. Modeling and experimental studies suggest that the impacts of stratospheric ozone depletion on tropospheric ozone are different at different altitudes and for different chemical regimes. As a result the increase in ozone due to stratospheric ozone depletion may be greater in polluted regions. Attributable effects on concentrations are expected only in regions where local emissions make minor contributions. The vertical distribution of NOX (NO + NO2), the emission of volatile organic compounds and the abundance of water vapor, are important influencing factors. The long-term nature of stratospheric ozone depletion means that even a small increase in tropospheric ozone concentration can have a significant impact on human health and the environment. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and chlorodifluoroacetic acid (CDFA) are produced by the atmospheric degradation of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). TFA has been measured in rain, rivers, lakes, and oceans, the ultimate sink for these and related compounds. Significant anthropogenic sources of TFA other than degradation HCFCs and HFCs have been identified. Toxicity tests under field conditions indicate that the concentrations of TFA and CDFA currently produced by the atmospheric degradation of HFCs and HCFCs do not present a risk to human health and the environment. The impact of the interaction between ozone depletion and future climate change is complex and a significant area of current research. For air quality and tropospheric composition, a range of physical parameters such as temperature, cloudiness and atmospheric transport will modify the impact of UV-B. Changes in the chemical composition of the atmosphere including aerosols will also have an impact. For example, tropospheric OH is the ‘cleaning’ agent of the troposphere. While increased UV-B increases the OH concentration, increases in concentration of gases like methane, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds will act as sinks for OH in troposphere and hence change air quality and chemical composition in the troposphere. Also, changes in the aerosol content of the atmosphere resulting from global climate change may affect ozone photolysis rate coefficients and hence reduce or increase tropospheric ozone concentrations.

Jungfraujoch (JUN), Switzerland and Zugspitze (ZUG), Germany. Inspection of the variability of the ratio 10 Be/ 7 Be in relation to 10 Be, 7 Be, and relative humidity (RH) reveals that the ratio is independent from processes that have a clear effect on both radionuclides, such as wet scavenging. High ratio values are generally met under cyclonic or northerly advective conditions, which are the synoptic situations mostly related to stratosphere-to-troposphere transport (STT) events over central Europe, while the 10-day back trajectories indicate a stratospheric source for the majority of the cases within the upper 10% quantile of 10 Be/ 7 Be ratios. The monthly 10 Be/ 7 Be ratios show a clear May and June peak at JUN and a much weaker seasonality at ZUG. A simple mixing model is used for an independent estimate of the strength of STT throughout the year based on the 7 Be and 10 Be measurements. In spite of the various uncertainties, the results indicate a seasonal cycle of stratospheric ozone percentage contribution with an early spring maximum (3– 11%) and autumn minimum (1–2%) at ZUG, while at JUN, a primary maximum in May and June (6–18%), a secondary maximum in March (4–13%), and a minimum again in autumn (1–4%) are revealed. Although the simple method applied here provides an independent estimate for the impact of STT to the lower troposphere, it nevertheless shows relatively good agreement with Lagrangian model calculations, especially for ZUG. [1] A variety of surface chemical measurements, including surface ozone, NO, NO2, NOx, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and nonmethane hydrocarbon, were carried out at a rural coastal site, Nopigia, Crete, and at a rural elevated site, Prases, Crete, within the framework of the Photochemical Activity and Ultraviolet Radiation (PAUR) II experiment, which took place in Greece and Italy in early summer (1–31 May 1999). The total ozone exhibited very large fluctuations (larger than 90 Dobson units, 1 DU = 2.69 × 1016 molecules cm−2) during the campaign with maximum values of around 400 DU during 10 May and minimum values of

[1] The Photochemical Activity and Ultraviolet Radiation (PAUR) II project (a continuation of an earlier PAUR I project) had the purpose of studying the interrelationships between changes in total ozone, tropospheric aerosols, UV radiation and photochemical activity. As part of PAUR II project, a campaign took place in Greece and Italy during May–June 1999, with the participation of 15 European and 3 American research institutions. A variety of radiation and gaseous and aerosol atmospheric composition and optical characteristics measurements were made during the campaign. Radiative transfer models and three-dimensional (3-D) regional chemistry transport models (CTM) were applied and compared to the available data set of PAUR II. The present overview paper gives an introduction to the project and to the meteorological and environmental conditions that prevailed and outlines some results that are extensively described in the subsequent papers which form this special section. The modulation of the UVB field in the presence of different types of aerosols, its transmittance and role in the photochemistry of the particular eastern Mediterranean environment is overviewed. Using a 3-D CTM, it is shown that even a 50% reduction in Greek anthropogenic emissions has only a small effect in reducing the ozone levels over the eastern Mediterranean in summer. The environmental conditions, which prevailed during the PAUR I and PAUR II campaigns, offered cases of background conditions over the Aegean Sea as well as conditions with Saharan dust episodes and extremes in total ozone.

Measurements of ozone throughout the troposphere clearly show an annual cycle. Over the last couple of decades it has become apparent that the measured annual cycle of ozone in certain locations shows a distinct maximum during spring and that the magnitude of the maximum seems to have increased. There has been much debate as to the origins of this phenomenon. There is broad agreement that much of the ozone found in the troposphere is of photochemical origin. In contrast, there is still no over-arching consensus as to the mechanisms that lead to the formation of the spring ozone maximum. Part of the problem would seem to lie in the interpretation of measurements and the interactions of processes occurring on differing scales from the local to the global scale.

Ozone data at the Jungfraujoch Observatory (3580 m asl) in the Swiss Alps have been recorded continuously since 1986 in the framework of the Swiss National Air Pollution Monitoring Network (NABEL), operated by the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA). The long-term ozone record (1988–1996) was examined with regard to potential inhomogeneities using Zugspitze (2960 m asl), a neighbouring alpine site in Germany, as a reference site. The Alexandersson test (for shift) and the Easterling–Peterson test (for trend and shift) were applied to a difference times series, calculated from monthly ozone means at Jungfraujoch and Zugspitze. The Alexandersson test revealed a significant shift discontinuity in November 1989 and the Easterling–Peterson test a trend discontinuity in September 1991. It is assumed that the shift discontinuity may be related to an instrument change, but there is not firm evidence due to lack of detailed information from the instrumental history in the earlier years of the ozone record at Jungfraujoch. Monthly ozone means at Davos (1640 m asl) in eastern Switzerland indicate that part of the trend discontinuity in September 1991 may be of natural origin. Adjustment of the monthly ozone means at Jungfraujoch for the observed shift discontinuity removed the inhomogeneity in November 1989, and reduced the trend discontinuity by a factor of 4.8. A trend analysis on both adjusted (homogenised) and unadjusted monthly ozone means (1988–1996) at Jungfraujoch showed no statistically significant linear trend. The boundaries encompassing the true linear trend are indicated by two linear regression calculations on both adjusted and unadjusted data. Trends in the cold season are positive albeit not significant. The only statistically significant trends are found in October, December, and February for the adjusted data.

The ozone records of several monitoring stations in Switzerland from 1992 to 1998 are investigated with respect to the variability observed during regional background conditions, i.e. conditions with little detectable local or regional-scale influences as evident by NO x and CO concentrations. The sites cover different altitudes between 490 and 3600 m asl. They are characteristic of near-surface conditions, the top of the planetary boundary layer or residual layer, the complex atmosphere in an alpine valley, and the free troposphere. The results reveal a distinctly different ozone variability (diurnal cycles, seasonal cycles, trends) during regional background conditions compared to all days. The estimated annual average ozone concentration under these conditions is between 33 and 50 ppb, dependent on altitude, with a spring maximum and an autumn/winter minimum. Differences in background ozone are found depending on the synoptic weather type. For all sites a positive ozone trend is calculated for background conditions that is larger than for all data. For the latter, the trends appear to be stronger positive for the last 7 years than for the last 11 years.

The Free Tropospheric Experiment (FREETEX'98) was conducted at the Jungfraujoch Observatory in the Swiss Alps (3580 m above sea level) during the well-documented spring maximum in ozone. In spring the Jungfraujoch frequently lies in the free troposphere but can also be influenced by air from the planetary boundary layer. Measurements of NOx, NOy, peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN), HCHO, O3, CO, nonmethane hydrocarbons, peroxy radicals, j(O1D), j(NO2), and a variety of other tropospheric constituents crucial to ozone photochemical cycles were made over a 1-month period. Two independent measurements of NOx, NOy, and PAN showed good agreement. Average free tropospheric daytime NO levels were about 50 pptv, sufficient to sustain photochemical ozone formation. Although high mixing ratios were encountered, PAN decomposition did not contribute to NOx production during FREETEX'98. Ozone production efficiencies (EN) derived from observed ?O3/(NOz) ratios in free tropospheric air were 20-30 molecules of O3 produced per NOx molecule oxidized and agreed well with a photochemical model. A much lower ozone production efficiency of 4 was determined in a photochemically aged air mass arriving from southern Europe, in line with other measurements and calculations in regimes containing high levels of oxidized nitrogen. Model simulations indicated that by sequestering NOx and HO2, low-temperature formation of peroxynitric acid (PNA) decreased ozone production by 20% and instantaneous ozone production efficiencies by 40%, whereas PAN formation had little effect. The model reproduced well the observed sharp transformation from ozone production to ozone destruction (defined as ?O3/?(NOz) = 0) at 20-25 pptv NO. The observed and calculated strong dependence of EN on NOx concentration in the low-NOx regime highlights the difficulty in assigning a single O3 production efficiency value to remote regions, where most of the CO and CH4 in the atmosphere are oxidized.

[1] During the EU-project Influence of Stratosphere-Troposphere exchange in a Changing Climate on Atmospheric Transport and Oxidation Capacity (STACCATO), a combined approach of a measurement network and numerical simulations was used to estimate the strength and frequency of stratosphere-to-troposphere transport (STT) events and their influence on tropospheric chemistry. Measurements of surface ozone, beryllium-7, and beryllium-10 concentrations and meteorological parameters at four European high mountain stations, as well as atmospheric profiles obtained by ozone soundings and a high-resolution lidar, were carried out. In order to simulate STT events, seven different models have been applied by the STACCATO partners. These are two trajectory models (LAGRANTO and FLEXTRA), a Lagrangian transport model (FLEXPART), a Lagrangian chemistry-transport model (STOCHEM), a Eulerian transport model (TM3), and two general circulation models (ECHAM4 and MA-ECHAM4). In order to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of each of these models and to identify the reasons for their discrepancies, a detailed comparison with measured data is presented in this paper. These models provided fluxes and concentrations of a stratospheric tracer, as well as the vertical profiles of ozone and radionuclides for a stratospheric intrusion case study that occurred over Europe in the year 1996. The comparison of the model results with the measurement data and the satellite observations revealed that all the models captured the general behavior of the event. However, great differences were found in the intensity and spatial development of the simulated intrusion event.

[1] In order to cover a substantial amount of stratospheric intrusions during the project Influence of Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange in a Changing Climate on Atmospheric Transport and Oxidation Capacity (STACCATO), coordinated measurements were carried out at several locations in central and southern Europe, based on quasi-operational stratosphere-troposphere exchange forecasts. In this context, lidar measurements of tropospheric ozone were performed at Thessaloniki (23°E, 40.5°N), Greece, for the investigation of stratosphere-to-troposphere transport (STT) events over the southeastern Mediterranean region, during 2000–2002. The study of STT in this area is of particular interest not only because of its geographic location, which is more southern than the typical position of the polar front jet, but also because of the sparseness of detailed studies in this area. A summary of the main characteristics of the STT events that were detected by lidar during the investigation period reveals a tropospheric ozone increase of the order of 10% between 4.5 and 6.5 km above sea level, a coincident decrease in relative humidity, and elevated values of potential vorticity, thus providing a direct indication of the occurrence of stratospheric air in the middle troposphere. No direct effect on surface ozone was recorded. Furthermore, the majority of the STT cases detected reveal a common pathway of the stratospheric air masses that reached Thessaloniki originating from the North Sea. In addition, the event of 9 January 2001, during which the clearest and strongest descent of stratospheric air occurred, is further analyzed. An ozone-rich layer of the order of 60–90 ppbv between 5 and 6.5 km above sea level is clearly depicted, which was the result of the intermixture of originally stratospheric and boundary layer air originating from North America.

This paper provides the overview of an integrated, multi-disciplinary effort to study the effects of the 29 March 2006 total solar eclipse on the environment, with special focus on the atmosphere. The eclipse has been visible over the Eastern Mediterranean, and on this occasion several research and academic institutes organised co-ordinated experimental campaigns, at different distances from eclipse totality and at various environments in terms of air quality. Detailed results and findings are presented in a number of component scientific papers included in a Special Issue of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. The effects of the eclipse on meteorological parameters, though very clear, were shown to be controlled by local factors rather than the eclipse magnitudes, and the turbulence activity near surface was suppressed causing a decrease in the Planetary Boundary Layer. In addition to the above, the decrease in solar radiation has caused change to the photochemistry of the atmosphere, with night time chemistry dominating. The abrupt "switch off" of the sun, induced changes also in the ionosphere (140 up to 220 km) and the stratosphere. In the ionosphere, both photochemistry and dynamics resulted to changes in the reflection heights and the electron concentrations. Among the most important scientific findings from the experiments undertaken has been the experimental proof of eclipse induced thermal fluctuations in the ozone layer (Gravity Waves), due to the supersonic movement of the moon's shadow, for the first time with simultaneous measurements at three altitudes namely the troposphere, the stratosphere and the ionosphere. Within the challenging topics of the experiments has been the investigation of eclipse impacts on ecosystems (field crops and marine plankton). The rare event of a total solar eclipse provided the opportunity to evaluate 1 dimensional (1-D) and three dimensional (3-D) radiative transfer (in the atmosphere and underwater), mesoscale meteorological, regional air quality and photochemical box models, against measurements.

A two-wavelength ultraviolet (289–316nm) ozone Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) system is used to perform ozone measurements in the free troposphere in the Eastern Mediterranean (Northern Greece). The ozone DIAL profiles obtained during a Stratosphere-to-Troposphere Transport (STT) event are compared to that acquired by an electrochemical ozonesonde, in the altitude range between 2 and 10 km. The measurement accuracy of these two instruments is also discussed. The mean difference between the ozone profiles obtained by the two techniques is of the order of 1.11 ppbv (1.86%), while the corresponding standard deviation is 4.69 ppbv (8.16%). A case study of an STT event which occurred on 29 November 2000 is presented and analyzed, using ozone lidar, satellite and meteorological data, as well as air mass back-trajectory analysis. During this STT event ozone mixing ratios of 55–65 ppbv were observed between 5 and 7 km height above sea level (a.s.l.). Stratospheric air was mixed with tropospheric air masses, leading to potential vorticity (PV) losses due to diabatic processes. The ozone DIAL system can be used for following STT events and small-scale mixing phenomena in the free troposphere, and for providing sequences of vertical ozone profiles in the free troposphere. [1] This paper provides a review of stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE), with a focus on processes in the extratropics. It also addresses the relevance of STE for tropospheric chemistry, particularly its influence on the oxidative capacity of the troposphere. After summarizing the current state of knowledge, the objectives of the project Influence of Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange in a Changing Climate on Atmospheric Transport and Oxidation Capacity (STACCATO), recently funded by the European Union, are outlined. Several papers in this Journal of Geophysical Research– Atmospheres special section present the results of this project, of which this paper gives an overview. STACCATO developed a new concept of STE in the extratropics, explored the capacities of different types of methods and models to diagnose STE, and identified their various strengths and shortcomings. Extensive measurements were made in central Europe, including the first monitoring over an extended period of time of beryllium-10 ( 10 Be), to provide a suitable database for case studies of stratospheric intrusions and for model validation. Photochemical models were used to examine the impact of STE on tropospheric ozone and the oxidizing capacity of the troposphere. Studies of the present interannual variability of STE and projections into the future were made using reanalysis data and climate models.
