- Abstract
The nuclear properties of Cr-48 composite alpha-like nuclei produced at 60 MeV of excitation energy via the Mg-24 + 24Mg reaction were investigated. This excitation energy corresponds to a resonance with a narrow width (170 keV) observed in the elastic and inelastic channels, which was interpreted as a highly deformed state. To gain insight on the deformation of this state exclusive measurements of light charged particles were carried out with 8 pi LP apparatus at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro and compared to statistical model predictions. The measured of alpha-particle energy spectra, alpha-evaporation residues, alpha-alpha, and alpha-alpha-alpha correlations indicate the limitation of the rotating liquid drop model in describing the nuclear shape of the compound nucleus along the decay cascade. To reproduce the full set of experimental data very elongated nuclear shapes had to be considered, with an axis ratio 3 : 1 at the resonance angular momentum. This large deformation is consistent with previous findings for alpha-like nuclei and with the predictions of the cranked cluster model.

- Abstract
The correlations between mass distributions of the binary fragments, total kinetic energy (TKE), and neutron multiplicity have been investigated for the reaction Ti-50+Pb-208 at 294 MeV bombarding energy. Although this reaction has been used to synthesize the Rf (Z = 104) superheavy element, a complete study of its fragmentation dynamics is still not available in the literature. In this work, average neutron multiplicities were extracted as a function of different fragment mass splits and TKE windows. A weak increase of the prescission neutron multiplicity is observed going from asymmetric to symmetric mass splits. A fission delay time of 4.5 x 10(-20) s has been extracted for the symmetric fission. The neutron multiplicity extracted for the symmetric mass split was used to derive the average number of neutrons emitted in the spontaneous fission of (258)Rf. The extrapolated value of 4.7 +/- 1.4 is found to be consistent with systematics of spontaneous and neutron-induced fission in heavy nuclei and with the results of previous works for superheavy nuclei with Z = 116 and Z = 124.

The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Frejus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of mu(+) and mu(-) beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular He-6 and Ne-18, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Frejus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive., We acknowledge the financial support of the European Community under the European Commission Framework Program 7 Design Study: EUROnu, Project No. 212372 and from the National Science Fund of Bulgaria under Contract No. 02-149/07.10.2009

A 4 pi light charged particle spectrometer, called 8 pi LP, is in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, for studying reaction mechanisms in low-energy heavy-ion reactions. Besides about 300 telescopes to detect light charged particles, the spectrometer is also equipped with an anular PPAC system to detect evaporation residues and a two-arm time-of-flight spectrometer to detect fission fragments. The spectrometer has been used in several fission dynamics studies using as a probe light charged particles in the fission and evaporation residues (ER) channels. This paper proposes a journey within some open questions about the fission dynamics and a review of the main results concerning nuclear dissipation and fission time-scale obtained from several of these studies. In particular, the advantages of using systems of intermediate fissility will be discussed.

The correlations between mass distributions of the binary fragments, total kinetic energy (TKE), and neutron multiplicity have been investigated for the reaction 50Ti+208Pb at 294 MeV bombarding energy. Although this reaction has been used to synthesize the Rf (Z=104) superheavy element, a complete study of its fragmentation dynamics is still not available in the literature. In this work, average neutron multiplicities were extracted as a function of different fragment mass splits and TKE windows. A weak increase of the prescission neutron multiplicity is observed going from asymmetric to symmetric mass splits. A fission delay time of 4.5×10−20 s has been extracted for the symmetric fission. The neutron multiplicity extracted for the symmetric mass split was used to derive the average number of neutrons emitted in the spontaneous fission of 258Rf. The extrapolated value of 4.7±1.4 is found to be consistent with systematics of spontaneous and neutron-induced fission in heavy nuclei and with the results of previous works for superheavy nuclei with Z=116 and Z=124. ispartof: Physical Review C vol:94 issue:4 status: published

A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the $^{88}$Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the reaction $^{48}$Ti + $^{40}$Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data. Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the statistical model have been found for forward emitted $\alpha$-particles; they may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the compound nucleus formation., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

In a collaboration between the INFN-SPES project and iThemba LABS, an on-line test of the power dissipation of a multi-slice target concept for radioactive-ion beam production has been performed. Using the 66MeV proton beam from the iThemba LABS Separated Sector Cyclotron, a total power of 4kW was deposited in the target complex, consisting of 13 Silicon Carbide (SiC) discs of about 1 millimetre thickness housed in a graphite cylinder. The results of the measurements fully validate thermal FEM simulations and confirm that the multi-foil target system is a reliable and affordable device for second-generation ISOL-RIB facilities like SPES.

NUCLEAR fission ,TEMPERATURE effect ,VISCOSITY ,DEFORMATIONS (Mechanics) ,STATISTICAL models (Nuclear physics) - Abstract
Nuclear viscosity is an indispensable ingredient of the nuclear fission collective dynamical models. It governs the exchange of energy between the collective variables and the thermal bath. Its dependence on the shape and temperature is a matter of controversy. By using systems of intermediate fissility we have demonstrated in a recent study that the viscosity parameters is larger for compact shapes, and decreases for larger deformations of the fissioning system, at variance with the conclusions of the statistical model modified to include empirically viscosity and time scales. In this contribution we propose an experimental scenario to highlight the possible dependence of the viscosity from the temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent in situ and remote observations suggest that the transport regime associated with shock-accelerated particles may be anomalous i.e. the mean square displacement (MSD) of such particles scales non-linearly with time. We use self-consistent hybrid particle-in-cell plasma simulations to simulate a quasi-parallel shock with parameters compatible with heliospheric shocks, and gain insights about the particle transport in such a system. For suprathermal particles interacting with the shock we compute the MSD separately in the upstream and downstream regions. Tracking suprathermal particles for sufficiently long times up and/or downstream of the shock poses problems in particle plasma simulations, such as statistically poor particle ensembles and trajectory fragments of variable length in time. Therefore, we introduce the use of time-averaged mean square displacement (TAMSD), which is based on single-particle trajectories, as an additional technique to address the transport regime for the upstream and the downstream regions. MSD and TAMSD are in agreement for the upstream energetic particle population, and both give a strong indication of superdiffusive transport, consistent with interplanetary shock observations. MSD and TAMSD are also in reasonable agreement downstream, where indications of anomalous transport are also found. TAMSD shows evidence of heterogeneity in the diffusion properties of the downstream particle population, ranging from subdiffusive behaviour of particles trapped in the strong magnetic field fluctuations generated at the shock to superdiffusive behaviour of particles transmitted and moving away from the shock. International audience; High-energy giant dipole resonance (GDR) γ rays were measured following the decay of the hot, rotatingcompound nucleus of 88Mo, produced at excitation energies of 124 and 261 MeV. The reaction 48Ti+ 40Ca at 300and 600 MeV bombarding energies has been used. The data were analyzed using the statistical modelMonte Carlocode GEMINI++. It allowed extracting the giant dipole resonance parameters by fitting the high-energy γ -rayspectra. The extracted GDR widths were compared with the available data at lower excitation energy and withtheoretical predictions based on (i) The Lublin-Strasbourg drop macroscopic model, supplemented with thermalshape fluctuations analysis, and (ii) The phonon damping model. The theoretical predictions were convolutedwiththe population matrices of evaporated nuclei from the statistical model GEMINI++. Also a comparison with theresults of a phenomenological expression based on the existing systematics, mainly for lower temperature data,is presented and discussed. A possible onset of a saturation of the GDR width was observed around T = 3 MeV.
