152. A new value of average beam solar heat gain coefficient for innovative daylighting systems

Abstract

The majority of the fenestration systems are available in the market today are of the type whose solar gain properties can be determined through the use of a computational procedure. However there is a class of fenestration systems (or attachments) that cannot be handled with the conventional procedures like solar path diagrams and shading masks. This class includes the daylight systems. These systems are an innovative technology for sunlight redirection or sunlight exclusion. A new formula for the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) is introduced, which can help in the discussion process concerning the optimization of solar gains through the above mentioned systems. This formula is solar positioned and radiation weighted value and can provide an accurate way to estimate the energy flux through the window and can be used as a performance rating methodology for the above mentioned systems. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma represent global health problems for all age groups. Asthma and rhinitis frequently coexist in the same subjects. Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) was initiated during a World Health Organization workshop in 1999 (published in 2001). ARIA has reclassified AR as mild/moderate-severe and intermittent/persistent. This classification closely reflects patients' needs and underlines the close relationship between rhinitis and asthma. Patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals are confronted with various treatment choices for the management of AR. This contributes to considerable variation in clinical practice, and worldwide, patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals are faced with uncertainty about the relative merits and downsides of the various treatment options. In its 2010 Revision, ARIA developed clinical practice guidelines for the management of AR and asthma comorbidities based on the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. ARIA is disseminated and implemented in more than 50 countries of the world. Ten years after the publication of the ARIA World Health Organization workshop report, it is important to make a summary of its achievements and identify the still unmet clinical, research, and implementation needs to strengthen the 2011 European Union Priority on allergy and asthma in children.

Abstract

Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline by using the best approach to integrated care pathways using mobile technology in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. The proposed next phase of ARIA is change management, with the aim of providing an active and healthy life to patients with rhinitis and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the lifecycle irrespective of their sex or socioeconomic status to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease. ARIA has followed the 8-step model of Kotter to assess and implement the effect of rhinitis on asthma multimorbidity and to propose multimorbid guidelines. A second change management strategy is proposed by ARIA Phase 4 to increase self-medication and shared decision making in rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity. An innovation of ARIA has been the development and validation of information technology evidence-based tools (Mobile Airways Sentinel Network [MASK]) that can inform patient decisions on the basis of a self-care plan proposed by the health care professional. © 2018 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology

Abstract

Der Artikel gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über Techniken zur personalisierten Präsentation von Hypermedia. Er beschreibt die Daten über den Computerbenutzer, die Computerbenutzung und die physikalische Umgebung, die bei der Anpassung von Hypermediaseiten an den Benutzer berücksichtigt werden können. Methoden zum Erwerb dieser Daten, zu ihrer Repräsentation in formalen Systemen, und zur Erstellung von Generalisierungen und Vorhersagen auf Basis dieser Daten werden diskutiert. Verschiedene Typen von Hypermedia-Anpassung an die Bedürfnisse jedes einzelnen Benutzers werden differenziert und Empfehlungen für künftige Forschung und Entwicklung gegeben. Obzwar der Schwerpunkt des Artikels auf der Anpassung von Hypermedia zur Verbesserung der Kundenbeziehung im World Weide Web (WWW) liegt, treffen viele der Techniken und Unterscheidungen auch auf andere Arten von personalisierten Hypermedia-Anwendungen innerhalb und außerhalb des WWW zu, wie etwa adaptive tutorielle Systeme.

Abstract

New regulatory water management requirements on an international level increasingly challenge the capacity of regional water managers to adapt. Stakeholder participation can contribute to dealing with these challenges because it facilitates the incorporation of various forms of knowledge and interests into policy-making and decision-making processes. Also, by providing space for informal multistakeholder platforms, management experiments can be established more easily in rigid regulatory settings, allowing for social learning to take place. Stakeholder participation is currently stipulated by several legal provisions, such as the Water Framework Directive, which plays an increasingly important role in European water management. Drawing on recent experiences in a participatory process in the German Dhuenn basin, a sub-basin of the river Rhine, we explored the interplay of informal and formal settings in a participatory process. To what degree can we allow for openness and catalyze social learning in participatory processes grounded in formal management structures? To what degree can results of informal processes have an impact on practice? We analyzed three major challenges related to this interplay: (1) the niche-finding process to establish a participatory platform; (2) the co-design process by water management practitioners, researchers and consultants; and (3) the tangible outputs and learning. We found that niches for the establishment of informal participatory platforms can occur even in a rigid and strongly structured administrative environment. Further, our case study shows that collaborative process design fosters dealing with uncertainties. We conclude that in an effective participatory process, a balance should be struck between informality and formal institutional structures to catalyze experimentation and learning and to ensure that process results have an impact on management decisions

Abstract

An artificial skylight has been developed which aims at creating an impression of a daylight opening in the ceiling by means of an artificial sunspot and a blue sky with perceived infinite depth. It is the goal of this work to compare and quantify the perceived room atmosphere created by this artificial system with that created by a conventional lighting system. A total of 100 subjects participated in a randomized controlled study within which the short-term effects on room lighting- and room atmosphere-appearance were determined. Both the artificial skylight and the resulting room atmosphere were perceived as very natural and attractive. Abstract

The fragment [(triphos)IrH], generated in situ by thermolysis of (triphos)Ir(H)2(C2H5) in THF, reacts with dinaphtho[2,1-b:1?,2?-d]thiophene (DNT) at temperatures higher than 100 °C to give a temperature-invariant 3:2 mixture of the two diastereomeric C-S insertion products (triphos)IrH(?2(C,S)-C20H12S) (3a,b; triphos ) MeC(CH2PPh2)3). In the temperature range from 70 to 100 °C, the reaction gives kinetic mixtures of the C-S insertion products and of the complex (triphos)IrH(?2-C20H12S) (2), which is suggested to contain an intact DNT molecule bound to iridium via a double bond from a naphthyl ring. Complex 2 in THF transforms into 3a,b even at 70 °C. Hydrogenation of 3a,b (30 atm of H2, 60 °C) in THF gives the dihydride thiolate complex (triphos)Ir(H)2(SC20H13), which is protonated by strong acids, converting to the dimer [(triphos)IrH(µ-SC20H13)2HIr(triphos)](BPh4)2. The latter compound is straightforwardly obtained by reaction of 3a,b with protic acids. The complex (triphos)RhH3 (6) reacts with DNT (THF, 70 °C) to give exclusively the dihydride thiolate product (triphos)Rh(H)2(SC20H13). The latter complex reacts in THF with KOBut in the presence of H2 (5 atm) at room temperature to give the trihydride 6 and potassium 1,1?- binaphthalene-2-thiolate. In the presence of a strong base (KOBut ), the ?-alkyne complex [(triphos)Rh(?2-MeO2CCtCCO2Me)]PF6 in THF behaves as a catalyst precursor for the homogeneous hydrogenolysis of DNT to 1,1?-binaphthalene-2-thiol (30 atm of H2, 160 °C). In the proposed mechanism, the [(triphos)RhH] fragment acts as the catalyst while the added base plays a dual role: it serves to generate the catalyst from the precursor and accelerates the reaction rate by influencing the rate-determining step positively.

Abstract

Permanent morning shift workers often suffer from impaired sleep and complain about increased fatigue during the day due to an early rising time in the morning. A controlled field investigation with female permanent morning shift workers was conducted, which evaluated the acute, monthly and seasonal psycho-physiological and productivity-related impacts of a dynamic ambient lighting scenario. Dynamic lighting had an acute psycho-physiological calming effect and positively influenced sleep latency and anxiety/depression ratings. Finally, productivity (decreased mean relative handling time) was increased during the winter. This field study contributes to the growing knowledge about biological lighting impacts during shift work. Furthermore it indicates lighting effects on productivity-related and subjective measures for a sleep-deprived working population. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
