Mismanaged plastic waste (MPW) and urban flooding are typically considered distinct environmental challenges. However, there are notable links between growing quantities of MPW and the rising incidence of floods in cities. A majority of people now live in cities, especially along coastlines and in estuaries where residents are both vulnerable to flooding and significant sources of plastic waste. Predicted increases in the frequency and severity of heavy rainfall associated with anthropogenic climate change coincide with rising global quantities of MPW, much of which is discharged into water bodies and the sea. Given the urgent and expanding nature of these issues, understanding impacts of urban floods on solid waste management and vice versa is crucial. Social-ecological systems (SES) thinking calls for a holistic approach to the relationships and interactions between human actors and environmental systems which can result in dynamic and emergent outcomes. In this review paper, we make a first step towards better understanding of the interactions between urban flooding and MPW by synthesizing emerging quantitative and qualitative research on particular aspects of such interactions. More research is needed which explicitly focuses on and elaborates the nature of these interactions, and also to consider potential relations across scales (from global to local) and over both long and short timeframes. We conclude that an SES approach can make visible novel possibilities for interventions which are context specific and sensitive to the interactions between urban floods and MPW. Societal Impact Statement: Agricultural soils are substantial receptors of plastic pollution. Plastic crop covers, a facet of agriplastics, may represent an important contribution to microplastic load in agricultural soils. The authors present a nationwide study of agricultural soils in the United Kingdom, comparing microplastic load between sites where plastic crop covers are and are not used for carrot and potato production. Sites where plastic crop covers were used received a higher microplastic load compared with sites where no plastic crop cover was used. The effects of microplastic pollution are largely unknown, requiring further research to determine the impact on soil, crop and human health. Summary: Agricultural soils are substantial receptors of plastic pollution, with agriplastics potentially making an important contribution to the overall microplastic load to agricultural soils. The intensive use and mismanagement of plastic crop covers, particularly plastic mulch films, nets and fleeces, represent a pollution pathway.In this study, we have analysed the microplastic concentrations in agricultural soils in 324 samples from 108 sites across the United Kingdom, where carrots or potatoes were grown, using a combined digestion and density separation method. Microplastics were stained with Nile Red and quantified using fluorescence microscopy.Microplastic concentrations ranged from 1320 to 8190 particles kg−1, with a mean of 3680 ± 129.1 particles kg−1. Where no plastic crop covers were used for potato and carrot production, a mean of 2667 ± 84.1 particles kg−1 were detected. At sites where plastic crop covers were used in the past 10 years, a mean of 4689 ± 147.1 particles kg−1 were recorded.There was a significant difference in microplastic abundance between sites where plastic crop covers were and were not used (p ≤ 0.001), confirming that plastic crop covers are an important source of microplastics to agricultural soils. Poor waste management and unsustainable institutional and individual behaviors, have led to the accumulation of plastic litter in many habitats worldwide. Assessment of plastic pollution in Kenyan marine environment was conducted focusing on the impact of banning the single-use plastic carrier bags in Kenya. The quantification, composition, and distribution of plastics were determined at nine (9) beaches along Kenyan coastline using standing stock method. A total of 750 plastic items were collected and categorized with only 47 pieces being single-use plastic carrier bags. A great number of plastics (n = 383), were identified by their original use, with packaging plastics being the most common (n = 155). Macroplastics were the overall dominant plastics at 76%, mesoplastics, 21% and microplastics, 3%, which were altogether dominated by low-density polyethylene (LDPE) at (46%), followed by polypropylene (PP), 30%; polyethylene tetraphthalate (PET), 9%; polyvinyl chloride (PVC), 8%; and polystyrene (PS), 7%. The absence of identifiable single-use plastic carrier bags in 6 out of 9 beaches signified the effectiveness of the ban in Kenya. Plastic pollution is a ubiquitous problem that poses a threat to society and the environment. The issue is especially pervasive in the aquatic environment, where large amounts of plastic debris accumulate from numerous anthropogenic pathways. Relatively little is known about the extent of macroplastics in African subtropical Austral rivers, where management strategies are lacking. This study quantifies and compares the variation in macroplastic abundances along the Mvudi River, South Africa, over four sites and four seasons. We observed a non-significant difference in macroplastic abundance and variation across sites and seasons, with pollution therefore widespread across these contexts. However, the diversity of plastic debris (i.e. γ-diversity value) decreased generally along sites, with most macroplastic items being collected during winter, and fewer macroplastic during autumn. We observed high abundances of macroplastic debris on the shoreline compared to the mainstream, with high proportional abundances of plastic bags and film (> 57.8%) macroplastic physical type across all sites and seasons. We also observed a high proportional abundance of the polymer polypropylene (> 25.3%) across seasons. The information derived from this study serves as the baseline for understanding seasonal variations in plastic debris and their driving factors on this and other subtropical Austral rivers. Plastic is an important part of today’s human daily lifestyle, and it is classified as a “global pollutant” due to its durability. The natural degradation of plastic is extremely slow and will take a hundred years or more. The ultimate destinations of plastics as well as their effects on the ecosystem vary with the type of plastic and the rate of their degradation. In this study, an attempt was made to explain the degradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic beads with the help of selected bacterial isolates in both laboratory and field conditions. 16 S rRNA gene sequencing further identified the bacterial isolates as Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus pumilus, obtained from the municipal waste disposal site near Anand, Gujarat, India. The beads were subjected to photolysis and hydrolysis for a predetermined amount of time in addition to biodegradation. After 60 days of treatment with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Micrococcus luteus, and Bacillus pumilus in both laboratory and field conditions, a significant percentage decrease in the weight of LDPE beads was observed. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was taken as a positive control. Further, the rate of degradation was found to be accelerated in the presence of 10% starch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Due to the abundance and durability of plastic waste, especially in marine environments, it has caused significant environmental effects and has become one of the most serious threats to oceans and biodiversity. Microplastics (1 micrometer to 5 mm), are an important component of marine plastic pollution. The growing concern over the negative effects of microplastics on human health has heightened attention to their presence in aquatic environments and edible aquatic animals. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to investigate the presence and quantitative (abundance and size) and qualitative (shape and color) microplastics in the digestive system of blackfin barracuda (Sphyraena genie) in the Oman Sea. Material and Methods: For this research, 27 pieces of S. genie with an average total length of 42.5 ± 5.36 cm and total weight of 353.5 ± 2.5 grams were collected by local fishermen using gill nets from the northern shores of the Oman Sea were collected in the winter of 2020 and bioassayed after being transferred to the laboratory. The extraction of microplastics was done by digesting the digestive system with ten percent KOH and then vacuum filtration. Identification, counting and determining the characteristics of microplastics (shape, size and color) were done by stereomicroscope. Particle dimensions (μm) were measured using ImageJ software. Results and Discussion: According to the obtained results, 285 plastic particles were detected in the S. genie on the coast of Oman. All the examined fish had microplastics in their digestive system. The average abundance of 10.5 ± 5.19 particles per individual and 0.8 ± 0.2 particles per gram of wet weight microplastics were observed in the digestive system of fish. The most identified microplastics were in the form of fiber (abundance: 73%), irregular fragments (26%) and film (1%). The identified microplastics were of various dark and light colors. The color combination according to abundance was black > gray > transparent > cream > red > blue and dark red > green and brown > pink and white > dark blue and peach. About half of the microplastics were shorter than 300 μm in length, while only about 9% of the microplastic particles were between 1 and 5 mm in length. In terms of size, microplastics were classified into eight groups: category one (size: 1-100 micrometers; 64 microplastics), category two (100-300 micrometers; 85 microplastics), category three (300-500 micrometers; 45 microplastics), category four (1 mm-500 micrometers; 66 microplastics) category five (1-2 mm; 19 microplastic), category six (2-3 mm; 5 microplastic), category seven (3-4 mm; 1 microplastic) and category eight (4-5 mm; without microplastics). The size of the fragments of microplastics was smaller than the fiber, and most of the fragments were less than 100 micrometers in size. Considering the small size of most microplastic particles and the presence of small fish remains (skulls, scales and gill fibers) and shell fragments in the digestive system of fish and the carnivorous diet of the S. genie, it can be assumed that the source of the microplastic particles swallowed by these fish, which represent environmental pollution with plastic waste is the secondary microplastics in this area. Conclusion: Microplastic particles were observed in the digestive tract of all the examined samples of S. genie. The isolated microplastics were in the form of fiber, irregular fragments and films. Black, gray, and transparent colors were evident as the dominant colors, and fiber was the dominant shape in microplastics. Microplastics with a size of 1 mm and less were the most abundant (92%) size. The existence of microplastics in the investigated fish leads to ecological and health concerns. Microplastics (MPs) have become an important concern among scientists and policymakers all around the globe. Despite this, the contribution of MPs to global warming and climate change, a significant aspect of the issue, has been overlooked. Continuous greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting in climate change have long been a major issue with apparent consequences. Climate change and plastic crises are threatening our planet, and the co-occurrence of both would be catastrophic. This article addressed the links between microplastic pollution and climate change; how MPs contribute to climate change by interacting with water, air, and soil; and recommendations to address the issues together. Throughout their lives, plastics emit GHG. MPs in water impede the climate change mitigation potential of the ocean in different ways; they hamper photosynthesis and carbon sequestration by phytoplankton and the Blue Carbon Ecosystem. MPs induce GHG emissions from the soil. Airborne MPs have the potential to aid in cloud formation and interfere with atmospheric cooling. Climate change–induced extreme events redistribute MPs in the environment, causing the pollution to increase vertically and horizontally, which then aggravates the situation in a feedback loop. The evidence acquired in the study implies that MPs and climate change are inextricably linked and that MPs play a vital role in fueling climate change. This bridges the gap between MPs and climate change issues that were previously regarded separately. Mangrove forests of Biscayne Bay in southeast Florida, USA can sequester pollutants from freshwater inputs. This “filtering” of water minimizes point source discharges through canals, but mangroves may also play an important role in the cycling of plastic pollution that reaches the Bay. The objectives of this study are to determine: 1) The composition of debris in the Bay’s mangroves and 2) How the structure of mangrove forests affects debris distribution. Debris was hypothesized to be more abundant further into the forest due to trapping by vegetation, and mesoplastics (5 mm – 2.5 cm) would be positively correlated to macroplastics (> 2.5 cm) due to fragmentation. Nine transects were surveyed and debris was recorded by size and potential origin. 94.5% of all debris was plastic of which 57.8% were fragments. Negative binomial generalized linear regression was used to relate total plastic and mesoplastic densities to distance from shoreline, elevation, basal area, prop root and pneumatophore cover, and mangrove seedling abundance. Plastic increased with distance from shore and basal area, although the latter was just above the p-value cut-off of 0.05 for mesoplastic (p-value = 0.0513), and was weakly negatively related to prop root coverage. Total plastic was weakly negatively related to red mangrove seedlings and pneumatophore coverage, although these relationships were less clear. Mesoplastic and macroplastic were positively correlated (p-value < 0.05). Selected mangrove forests of Biscayne Bay appear to be sinks for plastic debris, where it accumulates in the interior forest from which it is unlikely to escape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine microplastics have become a pernicious global pollution issue. As field surveys to determine microplastic abundance in the marine environment and/or biota become more common, it is important to refine collection techniques to minimize contamination of samples. However, most contemporary sampling equipment is fabricated with plastic components. Microplastic contamination during sample collection can be minimized from the onset by employing techniques that are plastic-less or with minimal plastic-to-sample contact. Here we describe plastic-less equipment and techniques for field sampling of water, sediment, and organisms. Some of these are traditional designs that predate the plastic era and can be revived or repurposed for microplastic sampling. Others are self-developed and fabricated using materials such as metal, wood, silk, and cork. For relatively small costs in time and funds, it is possible to greatly reduce, or eliminate, plastics from the field sampling process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plastic litter is a global threat affecting all marine ecosystems. Utilizing digital media platforms like Google, Facebook, and Instagram we assessed the detrimental effects of marine plastic litter on the biodiversity of the Italian marine ecosystem. We noted that marine plastic litter had adverse consequences on marine reptiles, mammals, sea birds, fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, including endangered and vulnerable marine species. The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was the most recorded species found entangled in plastic litter. Our investigation revealed that abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear are the primary contributors to the entanglement of numerous marine species. The current study represents a preliminary step towards establishing databases that document records of entanglement, which may be useful in adopting new conservation measures in the Mediterranean geographical subareas. Plastic pollution is becoming a significant problem in urban areas due to excessive use and careless disposal. While studies on microplastics are increasingly being conducted across various environments, research on microplastics in soil is limited compared to other areas. Microplastics entering the soil through various routes can stay there for a long period of time, threatening soil organisms and eventually humans. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the distribution characteristics of microplastics according to types of land use. For this purpose, a total of 54 soil samples were collected from agricultural land, residential areas, roadsides, parks, and forests. The analysis of microplastics in the soil by stereo microscopy showed that the average numbers of microplastics (particles/kg) in agricultural land, residential areas, roadsides, parks, and forests were 5047, 3646, 4987, 2673, and 1097, respectively. Various colors (black, red, green, blue, yellow, white, and transparent) and shapes (fragment, fiber, film, and sphere) of microplastics were found in soils. The combination of black x fragment plastics showed the highest frequency. Microplastics in soil samples from agricultural land, roadside, and residential areas with sizes between 20 µm and 500 µm were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and analyzed by MP finder. The number of microplastics detected in the soil with sizes ranging between 20 µm and 500 µm was in the order of roadside > residential areas > agricultural land, which was different from the results by stereomicroscopy. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were detected in soils from roadsides. Polyurethane (PU), cellulose acetate (CA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), PP, and polystyrene (PS) were detected in soils from residential areas, with PU being the most frequently detected. During wet weather events, combined sewer overflows (CSOs) transfer large amount of particulate matter and associated pollutants into surrounding water bodies, thereby deteriorating the recipients' ecological health. Resuspension of sewer sediments during these events contributes significantly to pollution level of these discharges. However, how much this in-sewer process contributes to CSOs' quality regarding microplastic (MP) pollution is little known. Therefore, an investigation on sewer deposits inside the Parisian combined sewer network was carried out. The study found high MP concentrations stored in this matrix, ranging from 5 × 103 to 178 × 103 particle/kg dry weight. Polymer composition is similar to what found in raw wastewater, containing a high proportion of polyethylene and polypropylene. Thus, the results indicated the persistence of MPs in sewer network during transport during dry weather periods to treatment facilities. Once resuspension of sewer deposits happens, MPs can be released into water flow and get discharged along with CSOs. This highlights another potential pathway of MPs into freshwater environment. Plastic and microplastic pollution in the marine environment is a global issue and lost or discarded fishing nets (FNs) represent a relevant part of the marine litter. This type of waste is very harmful to marine organisms due to ghost fishing and microplastics release. Furthermore, nets are difficult to dispose because they take up a lot of space at landfill sites and are expensive to transport. Therefore, the development of recovery and recycling strategies represents one of the solutions for this problem. In the present work, a multifilament, knotted, twisted waste FN, composed of nylon 6,6, was recycled realizing composite materials in combination with recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) or poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) matrices. The composites were realized exploiting a cold mixing approach, mixing the FN, either as a pre-ground short fiber filler or as mats, with the polymers swollen in an organic solvent. Several compositions were explored by these approaches and the composites were characterized by means of thermal, spectroscopic, mechanical and morphological analyses. Finally, a qualitative assessment of the economic impact of fishing net recycling was conducted. Results showed that the proposed recycling approaches allow to realize composite materials with interesting properties, opening new routes for recycling the FNs at the end of life improving the circular economy of plastics and reducing their ecological, ecosystem service and social and economic impacts. While microplastic analysis in aquatic systems is rather well standardized, the determination of microplastics in terrestrial samples has been less explored. Here, we review methods for microplastic analysis, with focus on sampling location and design, soil quantity, sampling depth and equipment, and sample handling and preservation. We found that the random sampling design can be used to collect a representative sample. Stainless steel shovels or soil augers were the most common tools for collecting topsoil, from 0 to 30 cm. Deep soil samples, of more than 100 cm depth, can only be obtained using a core drill. The number of soil samples collected in the field depends on the available budget and instruments for microplastic analysis. For example, if a micro-Fourier transform infrared microscope is used for analysis, soil samples as small as 15.0 g per point can be collected. Plastic pollution is an emerging environmental risk, as it may negatively impact many species.However, much remains to be studied in terrestrial invertebrates, since the information in which this pollutant interacts with insects and soil fauna in natural environments is still limited.Here, we present records of two ant species, Lasius grandis (Forel, 1909) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Monomorium sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), found entangled in synthetic fibres at the summit broom shrubland and canary pine forest in the island of La Palma (Spain), respectively.To our knowledge, this is one of the first reports of ants and other insects being entangled in plastics.Despite our small sample size, this interaction could be more widespread.Among other effects, ants could be transporting small plastic fragments to different soil horizons, but a greater knowledge of ants and other soil invertebrates interacting with plastics would help to improve our understanding of the relationship of this emerging pollutant with soil fauna in ecosystems with different degrees of human use. Sea turtles face a risk of extinction due to climate change causing warming of nests, which may increase both sex ratio skews, with fewer males being produced, and embryo mortality in nests. In theory, these threats could be mitigated by turtles switching their nest sites to cooler locations on beaches. We assessed nest positioning for green turtles, Chelonia mydas , in the Chagos Archipelago, a major nesting site in the Indian Ocean, and showed that nests were generally in vegetation at the back of the beach, where the risk of sea water inundation was lowest. The relatively few nests on the open beach were on average close to the vegetation. Sand temperatures at nest depths were similar across three beach zones (open sand, edge of vegetation, within the vegetation). Nest positioning was reviewed for 51 studies at 53 sites (including the current study) across the globe and across seven species: green turtles, hawksbills, Eretmochelys imbricata , loggerheads, Caretta caretta , leatherbacks, Dermochelys coriacea , olive ridleys, Lepidochelys olivacea , Kemp's ridleys, Lepidochelys kempii , and flatbacks, Natator depressus. Both in the Chagos Archipelago and across the globe studies show turtles generally tend to crawl a sufficient distance to minimize sea water overwash of nests, which can kill embryos. Hence maximizing embryo survival, rather than considerations of hatchling sex ratios, seems to be the main driver for nest positioning and so we conclude that sea turtles are, generally, unlikely to switch to select cooler beach sites to mitigate climate warming. • Most green turtle nests at an Indian Ocean rookery were in the vegetated zone. • Nests were positioned 0.14–2.44 m above the mean high water height. • Impenetrable vegetation led to long circuitous crawls to locate suitable nest sites. • The key factor in nest site selection is likely hatchling survival not sex-ratios. • Turtles are unlikely to shift sites on beaches to reduce impacts of climate change. The amount and composition of litter was evaluated during May and June 2021 at two urban beaches, i.e., La Victoria and La Cortadura, in Cádiz, SW Spain. Surveys were carried out daily in the morning and in the evening during the weekends to quantify the daily accumulation of beach litter and relate it to the number of beach users, which was assessed at around 1:00 p.m. Litter amount was also related to cleanup operations that were very mechanically and manually carried out each day very early in the morning. A total of 8108 items were collected at the two investigated sectors during the study period and beach visitors were quantified in 22 surveys. Plastic was the most common material, representing 82% in La Victoria and 68% in La Cortadura. The most common items were cigarette butts and small, hard plastic fragments. Some litter items that were hazardous to beach visitors were identified, such as broken glass. The number of visitors was positively related to the amount of litter. Significant differences were seen in the litter abundance between the morning and evening assessments since the beaches were cleaned daily and bins were available to facilitate trash disposal. Cleaning operations remove many of the litter items but always leave small quantities of small items uncollected. Efforts to prevent litter on these beaches should focus on informing visitors properly in order to avoid littering and on improving cleanup operations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microplastics are so widely dispersed and abundant throughout the globe that many scientists consider them to be important markers of the recent and current time, which is known as the Plasticene. The effects of microplastics are still not fully known, though. Because microplastics are multiple stressors with a variety of physical-chemical characteristics, understanding their impact is quite complicated. Toxic chemicals are transported by microplastics in ecosystems, acting as vectors of transport. Also, many dangerous chemicals are added during polymer production to enhance their properties as well as lengthen their life, and these chemicals must have detrimental effect. To date, many significant studies have been conducted, making a good progress to understand the effect of the key plastic additives on the environment. These additives are discharged into the environment and, hence become a source of many health issues, especially, when are coupled with micro-plastics. The current study thoroughly reviewed the most toxic and dangerous chemicals used in the plastic industry, elaborating the effects on organism health. Purpose: Biodegradable mulch film is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to non-biodegradable-based mulch film for agricultural use. The purpose of this study is to compare the environmental impact of non-biodegradable mulch film to biodegradable mulch films for use in Nordic conditions, including assessing their plastic pollution potential. Methods: A life cycle assessment was conducted to calculate the potential environmental impacts of the films, while the plastic pollution potential was assessed with a dynamic material flow analysis, considering degradation over time and fate to various environmental compartments. The plastic pollution potential was based on empirical degradation data in Nordic conditions. Results and discussion: The results of the LCA and MFA analyses show that the use of non-biodegradable material in Nordic conditions leads to the lowest environmental impacts and pollution if it is fully collected after use. In fact, biodegradable mulch film leads to higher environmental impacts over its life cycle in most environmental impact categories. However, comparing environmental burdens from non-biodegradable and biodegradable mulch film is difficult due to the lack of data on biodegradable films. The results further highlight that biodegradable films will reach a dynamic equilibrium (a plateau phase) in soils in Nordic conditions between the degradation of old film and the application of new film, if not enough time is given for the films to entirely degrade. Farmers would need to apply biodegradable films with several years of interval, if the films should be entirely degraded. Conclusions: This study supports the recommendations that biodegradable plastic has potential when used as mulch film, but these recommendations should be situation-specific, depending on farmers' ability to handle the mulch film properly. The authors highlight that the LCA results are uncertain due to limited data availability and encourage the biodegradable plastic industry to be more transparent by making their LCIA data available. Background: The extensive use of plastic in global supply chains (GSCs) has a profound impact on ecosystems and human well-being. Therefore, it is essential to implement an integrated strategy that takes into account the intricate interplay between economic factors, consumer behaviours, industrial practices, and environmental consequences to effectively address the plastic problem in global supply chains. Objectives: This study explored the factors that contribute to plastic pollution in GSCs and proposed solutions. Method: A thematic analysis of peer-reviewed articles, grey literature, and case studies of corporations implementing measures to reduce plastic pollution was conducted. Results: Variables including production, material economics, marketing techniques, consumer choices, insufficient recycling facilities, regulatory frameworks, and GSC complexities have an impact on plastic pollution. Remedies like sustainable alternatives, circular economy methods, and extended producer accountability confront obstacles such as expenses, scalability, consumer acceptance, technological constraints, and policy fragmentation. Conclusion: Addressing the issue of plastic pollution in GSCs is a challenging task that demands extensive and collaborative solutions. Currently, the mitigation strategies in place have several limitations, such as the absence of personalisation, cooperation, consumer involvement, and technological progress. Contribution: This study provides a holistic analysis of plastic pollution in GSCs, establishing a theoretical framework that incorporates environmental, economic, and social aspects of sustainability. It also offers practical suggestions for businesses to adopt more effective plastic waste reduction strategies and to enhance supply chain management practices.

Background Microplastic (MP) pollution is now a global critical issue and has been the subject of considerable worry for multiple various types of habitats, notably in lagoons which are coastal areas connected to the ocean. MPs are of concern, particularly because floating MP in surface water can be ingested by a number of marine organisms. There are several lagoons along Southeast Asia’s coastline, but Songkhla Lagoon is Thailand’s only exit with a rich biodiversity. To date, there has been little research undertaken on MP in this lagoon, so there is a pressing need to learn more about the presence of MP in the lagoon’s water. Methods We investigate MPs in the surface water of Songkhla Lagoon, Thailand. Sampling took place at ten stations in the lagoon during the wet season in December 2022 and the dry season in February 2023. Samples were digested with hydrogen peroxide to remove organic matter followed by density separation using saturated sodium chloride. MPs were visually examined under a stereo microscope to describe and determine the shape, size, and color. Polymer type was identified using a micro Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Moreover, the in-situ of water quality of the surface water was measured using a multi-parameter probe. A Mann-Whitney U test was performed to investigate the variations in MP levels and water quality parameters between the wet and dry seasons. The characterization of beached and marine microplastic debris is critical to understanding how plastic litter accumulates across the world’s oceans and identifying hotspots that should be targeted for early cleanup efforts. Currently, the most common monitoring method to quantify microplastics at sea requires physical sampling using surface trawling and sifting for beached microplastics, which are then followed by manual counting and laboratory analysis. The need for manual counting is time-consuming, operator-dependent, and incurs high costs, thereby preventing scalable deployment of consistent marine plastic monitoring worldwide. Despite numerous studies assessing the effects of microplastics (MPs) on soils and plants and their potential implications for human consumption and agriculture, there remains a lack of exploration on the role of vegetated ecosystems as natural filters of MPs pollution. The MPs stemming from anthropogenic continental activities may undergo retention within these ecosystems, preventing their dispersion into aquatic environments. However, questions are raised about their potential impact on plant health and soil quality. This review aims to address these gaps by examining studies analyzing the role of vegetated ecosystems in MPs retention, the sources and effects of these contaminants on soils, and their absorption/translocation into plants analyzing their direct effects on plant physiology and growth. Finally, future perspectives and knowledge gaps in these crucial research areas were explored.The main findings demonstrate that plants effectively play a crucial role in retaining MPs, with studies mainly focused on vegetated wetlands with halophytes, and that MPs could affect various soil properties, including bulk density, water retention, and microbiota, inducing oxidative stress on plants and disturbing their growth. However, research gaps persist, such as quantifying MPs in natural settings and investigating the complex relationship between MPs, plants, and ecosystems. Experiments often employed high concentrations of MPs, potentially deviating from natural environmental levels and thus requiring assessment of whether observed concentrations can elicit comparable effects. Additionally, the predominant focus on primary MPs in experiments overlooked other types derived from degradation of larger plastic items, warranting attention and inclusion in research efforts.In conclusion, vegetated ecosystems can naturally filter MPs from land-based activities before they reach aquatic environments. Nevertheless, these particles exhibit significant impacts on soil properties and plant growth, posing an emerging threat to terrestrial ecosystems that requires further study.

The production of plastic materials in the mid-20th century brought about transformative changes in consumer goods manufacturing and societal norms. However, this advancement paralleled an alarming surge in plastic pollution, driven by unrestrained consumption. This study focuses on the non-homogeneous and non-recyclable plastic waste (also known as plasmix in the Italian waste management), a residual blend resulting from plastic recycling processes. The main goals are to conduct an in-depth study of the plasmix landscape, to identify integration challenges, and to create a sustainable business model for broader adoption. Additionally, we aim to use life cycle assessment to examine the environmental effects of semi-finished plasmix-based materials that can be used to produce different products. This integrated approach ensures a holistic understanding of plasmix recycling, promoting both economic and environmental sustainability. The study contributes to sustainable waste management practices by offering a strategic approach to transform a challenging waste stream into economic opportunities. By addressing the market viability of plasmix-based products through an empirically supported business model, the research underscores the significance of recycling in mitigating plastic pollution and advancing a circular economy.

Background This review reveals the role of linear economy prevalence and mismanagement practices in plastic pollution of aquatic and terrestrial environments and related knowledge gaps in Romania while outlining downstream and upstream solutions to reduce plastic pollution and adopt circular economy strategies. Thus, the major aim of this study is the investigation of the stage of scientific knowledge concerning all these demands in the Romanian context. Methodology This work integrates two main approaches: (i) a bibliometric analysis fed by Web of Science and Scopus databases to reveal the current coverage of peer-reviewed literature related to plastic waste in Romania and (ii) a subject-based review to underline the main themes related to plastic waste management, plastic pollution, and mitigating options in Romania in line with circular economy principles. Results Reducing plastic pollution requires scientific knowledge, multi-sectoral cooperation, and societal awareness. Following this, the topics of plastic waste and plastic pollution appeared to be under-investigated in the literature considering Romania as a case study and concentrated around the 2020 year, emphasizing, in this way, the trendiness of plastic waste concerns and their management in the current research landscape. Our analysis points out that: (i) Romania is facing massive plastic pollution requiring solid improvements in waste management performances; (ii) few peer-reviewed research studies are performed in Romania for both macro and microplastic concerns with unknown pollution levels in most of its geographical regions; (iii) the plastic waste management is still understudied here, while waste statistics are poorly available at local levels; (iv) the perspectives of circular economy transition are still limited, feeding the plastic pollution in the coming years. Conclusions Several knowledge gaps are identified and must be covered by future research such as (i) adjusting mismanaged plastic waste levels to regional waste management performances and determining littering rates in urban and rural areas to improve the plastic pollution modeling inputs; (ii) examining plastic pollution associated with landfill sites and waste imports; (iii) assessing the sectoral contributions to macro and microplastic pollution of aquatic environments related to municipalities, tourist destinations, agriculture, etc.; (iv) determining retention levels of plastic in river basins and role of riparian vegetation; (v) analyzing microplastics presence in all types of freshwater environments and interlinkage between macroplastic fragmentation and microplastic; (vi) assessing the plastic loads of transboundary rivers related to mismanagement practices; (vii) determining concentrations of microplastics in air, soil, and other land use ecosystems.

This study evaluated the occurrence of microplastics in roadside soils in Port Harcourt and Elele, Rivers State, Nigeria. Topsoil samples were collected from three major road networks in Rivers State (Port Harcourt city internal roads, Port Harcourt to Elele Road, and Elele to Owerri road). Microplastics were extracted from the samples using density separation and quantified via microscopy. Microplastic abundances in the samples ranged from 3 particles/50 gram - 20 particles/50 gram. The highest number of microplastic particles were found on roads with the highest traffic density. Secondary microplastics were most abundant in the samples as fragments constituted 69% of the total plastics and made up 67%, 73% and 70% of Port Harcourt internal roads, Port Harcourt to Elele road and Elele to Owerri road, respectively. This study presents baseline data on microplastics in roadside soils in an urban Nigerian city and highlights the contribution of road traffic and vehicles to both terrestrial and aquatic microplastics as well as the need for routine monitoring in order to mitigate plastic pollution.

Predictions indicate a concerning surge in plastic waste, expected to reach 380 million tonnes by 2040 from 188 million tonnes in 2016. Strategies to combat this could reduce yearly waste to 140 million tonnes, but this may not fully address existing pollution levels. Urgent action is needed to devise safe and effective methods for degrading microplastics. Use of microorganisms ranging from bacteria to algae to help in the biodegradation of these particles has been employed and researched upon extensively. Microorganisms belonging to the following genus: Bacillus, Actinobacteria, Pseudomonas, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cyanobacteria and various species of microalgae have shown remarkable capabilities to degrade microplastic present in the environment. The main focus of this review is to highlight the potential microorganisms and organisms that can help with biodegradation of microplastics. The review also touches upon new biotechnological advancements like the use of genetically modified organisms to aid in the biodegradation of microplastics. It also highlights the gaps in research regarding the use of microorganisms and genetically modified organisms in a large scale and in combination with other degradation techniques in order to efficiently and safely degrade microplastics.

Waste pollution poses a significant threat to the survival of wildlife. In particular, microplastic pollution has received widespread attention. However, data on the exposure of threatened wildlife in nature conservation to microplastics, a very valuable basic data for animal conservation, are still limited. This study was conducted in the Qinling Mts., a key biodiversity hotspot and an essential genetic resource repository in China. Over the span from 2021 to 2023, a total of 22 fecal samples were collected from three species with different feeding habits over four months in two nature reserves in the Qinling Mts.: takin (Budorcas taxicolor), leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), and golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana). The potential reasons influencing the content of microplastics were studied on the basis of the distance of the fecal samples from the nearest residential area. Laser Direct Infrared Spectroscopy identified 34 types of microplastics, with diameters ranging from 20 to 100 μm. Among them, acrylate copolymer, polyethylene, and polyurethane were the main types. Leopard cat (67.06 particles/g d.w.) had a significantly higher microplastic content than the takins (20.53 particles/g d.w.; Z=-3.162, P=0.002) and golden snub-nosed monkeys (27.69 particles/g d.w.; Z=-2.193, P=0.028). The average microplastic content in leopard cats and takins exhibited a negative correlation with the distance from residential areas. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the presence of microplastics within threatened terrestrial wildlife. Addressing this pressing issue may require concerted efforts to reduce plastic consumption in the surrounding regions, which could help mitigate the adverse impacts on wildlife.

Density separation can isolate microplastics from environmental samples containing sediment. Typically, a solution added to sediment causes microplastics with lower densities to float. The solution of choice can influence the recovery of different particles since denser solutions can separate a greater range of microplastics. The equipment and procedural complexity further influence density separation protocols and microplastic recoveries. Zinc chloride (ZnCl2) is frequently used to isolate high-density polymers from environmental samples yet is rarely validated with simple, well-described protocols. A simple overflow method using ZnCl2 to isolate microplastics from sediment samples is described following a 3-step process: (1. Separation) ZnCl2 (1.7 g cm−3) solution is added to a sediment sample, agitated then settled; (2. Overflows) buoyant particles at the surface of the solution are overflowed twice; (3. Filtration) the overflowed solution is filtered. In a validation experiment with polyamide, rubber, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene terephthalate/polyester, the mean recovery using this overflow method was 96 % ± 0.6 (standard error). Plastic pollution in terrestrial wildlife represents a new conservation challenge, with research in this area, especially within protected areas (PAs), being scant. This study documents the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial wildlife both inside and outside PAs in western Thailand. Carcasses of road-killed vertebrates in good condition, as well as live tadpoles, were collected to examine their exposure to plastic pollution. The digestive tracts of the vertebrate carcasses and the entire bodies of tadpoles were analyzed for MPs, which were identified if they measured over 50 µm. A total of 136 individuals from 48 vertebrate species were examined. The sample comprised snakes (44.12%), birds (11.03%), lizards (5.15%), tadpoles (32.25%), amphibians (5.88%), and mammals (1.47%). In total, 387 MPs were found in 44 species (91.67%), with an average occurrence of 3.25 ± 3.63 MPs per individual or 0.05 ± 0.08 MPs per gram of body weight. The quantities of MPs significantly varied among the animal groups, both in terms of number per individual (p < 0.05) and number per gram of body weight (p < 0.01). Furthermore, a significant difference in MP quantities was observed between specimens collected inside and outside PAs on an individual basis (p < 0.05), but not on a body weight basis (p = 0.07). Most MPs were fibers (77%), followed by fragments (22.22%), with only a minimal presence of film (0.52%) and foam (0.26%). Of all the MPs identified, 36.84% were confirmed as plastics or fibers made from natural materials, and 31.58% were plastics, including Polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), and polyester (PES). Additionally, fibers made of cotton, and those containing polyurethane (PU), rayon, PES, and combinations of rayon and PU, were identified. The quantities of MPs were significantly influenced by animal body weight, factors associated with human settlement/activity, and land use types. Our findings highlight the prevalence of plastic pollution in terrestrial vertebrates within Thai PAs. Further toxicological studies are required to establish plastic pollution standards. It is proposed that snakes, obtained from road kills, could serve as a non-invasive method for monitoring plastic pollution, thus acting as an indicator of the pollution threat to species within terrestrial ecosystems. There is an urgent need for the standardization of solid waste management at garbage dump sites in remote areas, especially within PAs. Conservation education focusing on MP occurrence, potential sources, and impacts could enhance awareness, thereby influencing changes in behaviors and attitudes toward plastic waste management at the household level.

Plastic pollution is increasingly found in agricultural environments, where it contaminates soil and crops. Microbial biofilms rapidly colonise environmental plastics, such as the plastic mulches used in agricultural systems, which provide a unique environment for microbial plastisphere communities. Human pathogens can also persist in the plastisphere, and enter agricultural environments via flooding or irrigation with contaminated water. In this study we examined whether Salmonella Typhimurium and Vibrio cholerae can be transferred from the plastisphere on plastic mulch to the surface of ready-to-eat crop plants, and subsequently persist on the leaf surface. Both S. Typhimurium and V. cholerae were able to persist for 14 days on fragments of plastic mulch adhering to the surface of leaves of both basil and spinach. Importantly, within 24 h both pathogens were capable of dissociating from the surface of the plastic and were transferred onto the surface of both basil and spinach leaves. This poses a further risk to food safety and human health, as even removal of adhering plastics and washing of these ready-to-eat crops would not completely remove these pathogens. As the need for more intensive food production increases, so too does the use of plastic mulches in agronomic systems. Therefore, there is now an urgent need to understand the unquantified co-pollutant pathogen risk of contaminating agricultural and food production systems with plastic pollution.

Abstract Plastics are now ubiquitous in the environment and have been studied in wildlife and in ecosystems for more than 50 years. Measurement of size, shape and colour data for individual fragments of plastic is labour‐intensive, unreliable and prone to observer bias, particularly when it comes to assessment of colour, which relies on arbitrary and inconsistently defined colour categorisations. There is a clear need for a standard method for data collection on plastic pollution, particularly one that can be readily automated given the number of samples involved. This study describes a new method for standardised photography of marine plastics in the 1–100 mm size range (meso‐ and macro‐plastics), including colour correction to account for any image‐to‐image variation in lighting that may impact colour reproduction or apparent brightness. Automated image analysis is then applied to detect individual fragments of plastic for quantitative measurement of size, shape, and colour. The method was tested on 3793 fragments of debris ingested by Flesh‐footed Shearwaters (Ardenna carneipes) on Lord Howe Island, Australia, and compare results from photos taken in two separate locations using different equipment. Photos were acquired of up to 250 fragments at a time with a spatial resolution of 70 μm/pixel and were colour‐corrected using a reference chart to ensure accurate reproduction of colour. The automated image analysis pipeline was found to have a 98% success rate at detecting fragments, and the different size and shape parameters that can be outputted by the pipeline were compared in terms of usefulness. The evidence shown in this study should strongly encourage the uptake of this method for cataloguing macro‐scale plastic pollution, as it provides substantially higher quality data with accurate, reliable measurements of size, shape and colour for individual plastics that can be readily compared between disparate datasets.

Plastic products are so extensively used that they continue to strain the already overburdened waste management system and, inevitably, the global climate. Biodegradation is a sustainable remedy. Here, we report a few microorganisms isolated from landfill soil near Dhaka that thrive especially on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymers. Soil samples were subjected to three enrichment cycles that contained no carbon except PET. Pure isolates were recovered and incubated on minimal agar containing PET as the sole carbon. A morphological examination was carried out. Potential PET-degrading enzyme sequences from the isolates and other microalgae were analyzed for homology using BLASTP and TBLASTN, and multiple sequence alignment (MSA) was performed to assess conserved domains. Six isolates were obtained. Two isolates grew around the PET film but did not grow sufficiently in other areas of the minimal agar. Two other isolates with greenish pigmentation flourished around the PET film as well as on other areas of the agar. One of the green cells resembled Aphanocapsa, with irregular shapes and occasionally brown dense bodies, while the others looked round like Microcystis. Homology analysis revealed the hypothetical PETases in green cells contained the highly conserved catalytic triad (Ser-His-Asp) at the active site, as always found in alpha-beta hydrolase fold containing enzymes. Microbes isolated from two landfill sites in the vicinity of Dhaka have been adapted to utilize PET as a carbon source. In the future, sequencing and further characterization would be necessary to validate the findings. Microalgal systems demand increased focus, given their potential to offer valuable resources for bioremediation.

Microplastic ingestion was reported for common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) inhabiting Sarasota Bay, FL, USA, a community that also has prevalent exposure to plasticizers (i.e., phthalates) at concentrations higher than human reference populations. Exposure sources are currently unknown, but plastic-contaminated prey could be a vector. To explore the potential for trophic exposure, prey fish muscle and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) tissues and contents were screened for suspected microplastics, and particle properties (e.g., color, shape, surface texture) were compared with those observed in gastric samples from free-ranging dolphins. Twenty-nine fish across four species (hardhead catfish, Ariopsis felis; pigfish, Orthopristis chrysoptera; pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides; and Gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta) were collected from Sarasota Bay during September 2022. Overall, 97% of fish (n = 28) had suspected microplastics, and GIT abundance was higher than muscle. Fish and dolphin samples contained fibers and films; however, foams were common in dolphin samples and not observed in fish. Suspected tire wear particles (TWPs) were not in dolphin samples, but 23.1% and 32.0% of fish muscle and GIT samples, respectively, contained at least one suspected TWP. While some similarities in particles were shared between dolphins and fish, small sample sizes and incongruent findings for foams and TWPs suggest further investigation is warranted to understand trophic transfer potential.

Plastic waste is a substance that is no longer used and contains certain elastic materials that require heat energy to decompose. Plastic waste has a longer time to decompose, which is about 20 to 100 years. The purpose of this study is to identify public perception and participation in plastic waste management, analyze the relationship between internal and external factors and perceptions of plastic waste management, and analyze the relationship between public perception and participation in plastic waste management. The research was conducted through explanatory research with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study is the people of Kelapa Island, Seribu Islands, DKI Jakarta with a sample of 300 respondents. The results showed that there was a relationship between knowledge (p-value = 0.001) and the role of government/community leaders (p-value = 0.002) with perceptions of plastic waste management. There is a relationship between public perception and participation in plastic waste management (p-value = 0.000). The conclusion shows that the perception of the community as a whole is positive and community participation in the management of plastic waste is already high. It is hoped that the programs that have been successfully implemented need to be maintained, improved, and monitored regularly.

The primary data of micro- and macroplastics in the aquatic environment of Lake Markakol, located in the mountainous area of East Kazakhstan, are presented. The determination of micro- and macroplastics in water is based on sieving, drying, liquid oxidation, density separation and visual sorting using a microscope with a magnification of 40×. The detected plastic fragments in the aquatic environment include fishing line nets, Styrofoam balls, plastic bags, plastic bottles, wrappers, food labels and packages and other types of plastic waste. The sizes of the plastic fragments were ˃25 mm, 1.0–5.0 mm and 0.315–1.0 mm. The concentration of plastic in Lake Markakol was 837.5 µg/m3 in the tributaries and 482.1 µg/m3 in the lake water. The detected plastic mainly corresponded to sieve mesh sizes of 1.0–5.0 mm and 0.315–1.0 mm. The main sources of plastic pollution are fishing, tourism and the lack of adequate infrastructure for household waste management. These data emphasize the importance of measures to regulate plastic waste management in order to preserve the Lake Markakol ecosystem and maintain human health.

Plastic production on a commercial scale began in the 1950s, reaching an annual production of 460 million metric tons in 2019. The global release of 22% of produced plastics into the environment has raised concerns about their potential environmental impacts, particularly on aquatic ecosystems. Here, we quantify and categorize plastic debris found along Richland Creek, a small, heavily forested watershed in western North Carolina, USA. Plastics within the riparian zone of seven 50 m reaches of Richland Creek and its tributaries were sampled two or three times. The 1737 pieces of collected plastic debris were returned to the lab where they were measured and categorized. A small-scale laboratory study using seven of the items collected was performed to determine their ability to break down into microplastics (particles < 5 mm in size). The majority (76%) of collected items were made of either plastic film (particularly bags and food wrappers, 43%) or hard plastics (e.g., bottles, 2%). However, when viewed on a surface area basis, films and synthetic fabrics (e.g., clothing, sleeping bags) equally dominated. Roughly three-quarters of the items collected had a width less than 10 cm, due primarily to the fragmentation of the original items; over two-thirds of the collected items were fragmented. Items composed of foams and films exhibited the highest fragmentation rates, 93% and 86%, respectively. Most collected plastics were domestic in nature, and the number of items increased downstream through more developed areas. Laboratory studies showed that plastic debris has a propensity to break down into microplastics. We believe the data collected here should be replicated in other streams, as these freshwater environments are the source of plastics that eventually enter the oceans.

Pollution coming from plastic polymers, particularly polyethylene (PE), poses a serious threat to both humans and animals. The biodegradation of plastics facilitated by insects is a crucial and eco-friendly approach that can be employed to combat this global concern. Recently, the larvae of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella (L.) have been recognized as avid ‘plastivores’. The current study was aimed at evaluating the feeding efficiency of G. mellonella larvae on PEs of various densities with a co-diet supplementation of wheat germ + honey and beeswax. The results reveal that maximum PE consumption (9.98 ± 1.25 mg) was recorded in the case of 1.0 mm thick PE after a 24 h interval; however, the same scenario also achieved the greatest reduction in larval weight (27.79 ± 2.02 mg). A significant reduction in PE mass (5.87 ± 1.44 mg) was also observed in 1.0 mm PE when fed beeswax; however, the larvae experienced minimal weight loss (9.59 ± 3.81 mg). The larvae exhibited a higher PE consumption in 1.0 mm PE, indicating that the lower the density of PE, the greater the consumed area. Moreover, the biodegradation levels were notably higher within the 24 h interval. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the density of PEs and the supplementation of the co-diet have an impact on PE biodegradation. Additionally, the utilization of G. mellonella for the biodegradation of PE proves effective when combined with beeswax, resulting in minimal weight loss of the larvae. Our findings offer initial insights into how Galleria mellonella larvae biodegrade polyethylene (PE) of four different densities, along with co-diet supplementation. This approach helps us evaluate how varying densities affect degradation rates and provides a better understanding of the larvae’s capabilities. Additionally, our observations at three specific time intervals (24, 48, and 72 h) allow us to identify the time required for achieving degradation rates. Through examining these time points, our method offers valuable insights into the initial phases of plastic consumption and biodegradation.

Microplastics have been found in the gastrointestinal (GI) fluid of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), inhabiting Sarasota Bay, FL, suggesting exposure by ingestion, possibly via contaminated fish. To better understand the potential for trophic transfer, muscle and GI tissues from 11 species of dolphin prey fish collected from Sarasota Bay were screened for microplastics (particles < 5 mm diameter). Suspected microplastics were found in 82% of muscle samples (n = 89), and 97% of GI samples (n = 86). Particle abundance and shapes varied by species (p < 0.05) and foraging habit (omnivore vs. carnivore, p < 0.05). Pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) had the highest particle abundance for both tissue types (muscle: 0.38 particles/g; GI: 15.20 particles/g), which has implications for dolphins as they are a common prey item. Findings from this study support research demonstrating the ubiquity of estuarine plastic contamination and underscore the risks of ingestion exposure for wildlife and potentially seafood consumers.

The increasing concern over environmental sustainability has prompted various industries to reassess their practices and explore greener alternatives. Dentistry, as a significant contributor to waste generation, is actively seeking methods to minimize its environmental footprint. This paper examines the environmental implications of clear aligner therapy (CAT) in orthodontics and explores strategies to prioritize sustainability in aligner manufacturing and usage. CAT has gained popularity as a viable alternative to traditional fixed appliances due to advancements in biomaterials and computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing (CAM) technologies. The global market for clear aligners is expanding rapidly, with significant growth projected in the coming years. To address these challenges, this paper proposes adopting the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink (4Rs) in orthodontic practices. Strategies such as minimizing resource consumption, incorporating recycled materials, and promoting proper aligner disposal and recycling can significantly reduce environmental harm. This paper explores emerging technologies and materials to mitigate the environmental impacts of CAT. Additionally, initiatives promoting aligner recycling and repurposing offer promising avenues for reducing plastic waste and fostering a circular economy. In conclusion, while CAT offers numerous benefits in orthodontic treatment, its environmental impact cannot be overlooked. By implementing sustainable practices and embracing innovative solutions, the orthodontic community can contribute to a more environmentally conscious future while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

The escalating environmental impact of plastic packaging waste necessitates sustainable alternatives in food packaging. This study explores starch-based films derived from cassava and potato as viable substitutes, aiming to mitigate plastic pollution and enhance environmental sustainability. Utilizing a casting method, formulations optimized by CCRD were characterized for their physical, physicochemical, and morphological properties. Comprehensive analysis revealed both cassava and potato starch films to exhibit robust structural integrity, high tensile strength (up to 32.6 MPa for cassava starch films), and semi-crystalline morphology. These films demonstrated low water vapor permeability and moderate solubility, akin to conventional low-density polyethylene used in packaging. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated glass transition temperatures between 116.36 °C and 119.35 °C, affirming thermal stability suitable for packaging applications. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed homogeneous film surfaces, with cassava starch films (C4-15) exhibiting superior transparency and uniformity. X-ray diffraction corroborated the films’ semi-crystalline nature, unaffected by sorbitol content variations. Despite their mechanical and thermal suitability, further enhancements in thermal degradation resistance are essential for broader thermoprocessing applicability. These findings underscore the potential of starch-based films to be used as lids or other part of a food package, decreasing the plastic dependency in food packaging, contributing decisively to waste reduction and environmental preservation.

Microplastic pollution poses an increasing environmental and human health risk and additional techniques are needed to facilitate nondestructive, quantitative particle recovery and analysis. Using a mini-extruder filtration (MEF) device, the efficiency of pristine particle capture from solution and digested biological tissue (blood clots) was assessed. Polystyrene particles in both the submicron (100, 300, and 500 nm) and micron range (2, 5, 7, and 10 µm) with aminated, carboxylated, or unmodified surface modifications were explored. The MEF-isolated-particle recovery was analyzed pre- and postseparation isolation and quantified via a Nanosight LM10 particle tracking system (submicron particles) or hemacytometer (micron particles). Particles’ surface chemistry and concentration did not impact recovery compared to unfiltered samples with smaller particle sizes reducing recovery efficiency. Micron particle size recovery averaged 86.8 ± 4.3% across all surface chemistries at the same concentration; however, submicron particle recoveries varied by size and charge with 500 nm exhibiting recoveries of 80.6 ± 16.6%, 300 nm 73.0 ± 10.4%, and 100 nm particles 17.0 ± 10.3%. The mini-extruder device, used as a filtration recovery system, efficiently captures 10 to 0.5 µm particles from environmental and tissue samples making it an effective and low-cost platform facilitating the nondestructive capture of diverse microplastics for subsequent analysis.

Ocean plastic pollution is one of the global environmental problems of our time. “Rubbish islands” formed in the ocean are increasing every year, damaging the marine ecosystem. In order to effectively address this type of pollution, it is necessary to accurately and quickly identify the sources of plastic entering the ocean, identify where it is accumulating, and track the dynamics of waste movement. To this end, remote sensing methods using satellite imagery and aerial photographs from unmanned aerial vehicles are a reliable source of data. Modern machine learning technologies make it possible to automate the detection of floating plastics. This review presents the main projects and research aimed at solving the “plastic” problem. The main data acquisition techniques and the most effective deep learning algorithms are described, various limitations of working with space images are analyzed, and ways to eliminate such shortcomings are proposed.

We conducted a nationally-representative survey of United States (U.S.) adults (n=1,960) in 2021 to gather insights on the knowledge, perceptions, and concerns about threats to the ocean, with a specific focus on plastics and microplastic pollution. Responses from the U.S. adult survey group were compared to a group of highly-engaged, Ocean Conservancy members who are very attuned to ocean issues (n=882). Ocean Conservancy is a U.S.-based nonprofit environmental advocacy group working to protect the ocean from today's greatest challenges. Plastic pollution was the primary ocean concern identified by both U.S. adults and Ocean Conservancy members, surpassing eight other threat categories including oil spills, chemical and nutrient pollution, and climate change. Broad concern was reported for both study groups about the impacts of ocean plastics on marine wildlife, with human health and coastal community impact concerns being less prominent. About half of U.S. adults and 90% of Ocean Conservancy members had heard of microplastics. Both study groups indicated widespread support for microplastic pollution prevention measures in the U.S. and believed industry to be most responsible for taking action to address it. Ocean Conservancy members were generally better informed and more concerned about plastic pollution impacts and microplastics than U.S. adults and reported significantly greater levels of personal action to reduce their plastic footprint when compared to U.S. adults. In general, U.S. adults reported a willingness to refuse single-use plastics, but less frequently brought personal food containers to restaurants for takeout, or contacted local representatives or businesses about reducing plastic waste and pollution. Overall, our survey results provide new insights about public understanding of ocean threats and plastic pollution, willingness to participate in individual plastic-reduction actions, and support for needed solutions. Using the theory of planned behaviour, this article aims to understand the psychology of plastic dependency in Nigeria. The plastics pollution has been more prevalent in its impact on the marine and terrestrial environment in Nigeria, this article engages with the mind-set of stakeholders from both governance and policy perspectives with the purpose of investigating and analysing the theory of planned behaviour to form a baseline for policy making and further research on how to combat plastics pollution in Nigeria.
