All rights reserved., A 23-year-old man, phototype V, complained of abrupt onset of painful skin lesions on the hands, which 4 days later spread to the feet. Physical examination revealed a symmetrical acral dermatosis over the dorsum of the feet, ankles, hands, and wrists: pustules, erythematous–violaceous papules, and hemorrhagic crusts. There were no mucosal or systemic signs and the patient denied any prodromal symptoms.

Copyright © Ordem dos Médicos 2018, Nowadays, due to the increasingly frequent migratory circuits in Europe and the increment of the migrant population in Portugal, mainly in the Lisbon metropolitan area, it is more and more common to find several dermatological conditions and disorders in Africans seen in our health care system. There are few studies on dermatoses in these populations. It is important to know the biologic and physiologic differences of black skin in order to understand both the pathophysiology and manifestations of dermatoses. The recognition of many of them represents a challenge to any clinician due to the specific characteristics of their skin. It is thus essential to know the different patterns and frequencies of skin diseases in Africans, in order to optimize the diagnosis, approach and treatment., Atualmente, devido aos circuitos migratórios cada vez mais frequentes na Europa e consequente aumento da população migrante em Portugal, principalmente na área metropolitana de Lisboa, é cada vez mais comum depararmo-nos com diversas patologias dermatológicas nos indivíduos africanos que recorrem ao sistema de saúde. Existem poucos estudos sobre dermatoses nesta população. É importante conhecer as diferenças biológicas e fisiológicas da pele negra, de modo a compreender a fisiopatologia e a manifestação das dermatoses. O diagnóstico de muitas delas constitui um desafio para qualquer clínico devido às características específicas da sua pele. É essencial conhecer os diferentes padrões e frequências das doenças cutâneas em africanos, de modo a otimizar os seus diagnóstico, abordagem e tratamento

Background and purpose: Endothelium-dependent vasodilation plays an important role in the regulation of vascular tone in different vascular beds. Besides the release of prostacyclin (PGI2) and nitric oxide (NO), the endothelium mediates vasodilation through endothelium-derived hyperpolarization (EDH). EDH is defined as the hyperpolarizing current through myoendothelial gap junctions that hyperpolarizes and relaxes the underlying vascular smooth muscle. EDH has been shown to play a major role in the modulation of preglomerular tone in the renal circulation. Here, we studied the functional expression of the different K+ channels involved in the EDH of renal arteries and its correlation with renal vasodilator responses. Material and methods: Segmental and interlobar arteries from the kidney of male Wistar rats were used in these experiments. Freshly isolated endothelial cells were obtained by scraping the luminal surface of the artery after enzymatic digestion with trypsin, and K+ currents were measured using the whole cell configuration of the patch clamp technique (Oliván-Viguera et al., Basic Clin. Pharmacol. Toxicol. Doi: 10.1111/bcpt.12560, 2016). Moreover, changes in isometric wall tension of the vessels were also studied using wire myography. Interlobar arteries were precontracted with phenylephrine (Phe) and acetylcholine (ACh) concentration-response curves were constructed under conditions of NO synthase- and cyclooxygenase blockade, in the absence and the presence ofvarious KCa channel blockers. Key results: Under Voltage-clamp conditions a change in the morphology of the currents -induced by ramps from - 100 mV to 160 mV; 600 ms- was observed in response to the addition of ACh, evidencing a selective activation of channels sensitive to increases in intracellular Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+]i). Blockers of KCa channels, Iberiotoxin, TRAM-34 and UCL 1648, were able to inhibit different components of those currents. Moreover, in the presence of L-NAME and indomethacin, Iberiotoxin and TRAM-34 inhibited ACh-induced vasodilatation ininterlobar arteries mounted in wire myographs.Conclusions and implications: The results show that KCa channels play a major role in the EDH of preglomerular renal circulation. BKCa, IKCa and SKCa are functionally expressed in the endothelial cells of segmental and interlobar arteries. Stimulation of endothelial cells with ACh has an effect mainly increasing IKCa currents, while basal levels of [Ca2+]i may allow SKCa currents to be active in the absence of ACh. BKCa and IKCa currents have an essential role in the vasodilatation induced by EDH, while SKCa currents might be mainly involved in the release of NO.Keywords: Renal arteries, EDH, KCa channels.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Psicologia do Trabalho, das Organizações e dos Recursos Humanos apresentada à Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Coimbra Emotional regulation refers to the processes through which individuals influence which emotions they have, when they have them and how they experience or express these emotions. The interest in the study of emotion regulation has to do with the importance of the regulation in the emotion management at the workplace interactions and its influence in the well-being of workers and their stress management. Therefore, the aim of this research is to test the predictive power of emotional regulation strategies (down and up-emotional regulation) in stress management and well-being improvement, by studying the correlation of these strategies with perceived stress and work well-being and also by studying the moderator influence of emotional regulation strategies in the relation between stress and well-being in a sample of 358 portuguese workers working in Portugal. The results have shown that down-emotional regulation and up emotional regulation are negatively associated to perceived stress in a significant way. They also showed that up and down emotional regulation are positively associated to work-well being, but not significantly. As to the moderator effect, the results showed no significant moderation for both up and down emotional regulation strategies, however, showing stronger relationship between down emotional regulation and perceived stress, suggesting that people might find this strategy more useful than up emotional regulation.

Introdução: A população pediátrica representa uma parte importante do atendimento na urgência de oftalmologia no Serviço Nacional de Saúde. No entanto são desconhecidos os dados relativos a esse atendimento não só em Portugal como no resto do mundo. Sendo o Hospital São João (HSJ) o único hospital com serviço de urgência (SU) pediátrico na cidade do Porto e o hospital de referência do restante Norte do país, esta será uma boa instituição para estudar o perfil da população pediátrica que recorre ao SU de oftalmologia. Material e Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo dos 2158 episódios de urgência do HSJ em que, durante o ano de 2005, crianças e adolescentes com idades até 16 anos foram observadas por um oftalmologista. Resultados: Os episódios de urgência observados correspondem a 9,8% de todas as urgências oftalmológicas e a 3% de todas as urgências pediátricas. Os indivíduos do sexo masculino foram responsáveis por 57,8% dos episódios. O recurso ao SU diminui com a idade. Os concelhos geograficamente mais próximos contribuem com a maioria dos doentes sobretudo se não possuem hospital concelhio. Trinta e três vírgula um por cento dos pacientes foram referenciados de outra instituição. Os episódios de urgência são mais frequentes nos meses de Maio e Junho e em 96,6% dos casos ocorrem entre as 8 e as 24 horas. Oitenta e nove por cento dos doentes têm alta em menos de 120 minutos. Por diagnósticos (ICD 9) predominam “as doenças dos olhos e anexos” seguidas do grupo “traumatismos e envenenamentos” (estes últimos representam 37,3% dos episódios). Conclusão: Na área da oftalmologia pediátrica o serviço de urgência representa um papel importante no Serviço Nacional de Saúde. La propuesta que se desarrolla a continuación tiene la intención de dar una solución educativa a un colegio agrupado en el entorno rural. Ha sido diseñada para trabajar con niños de Educación Infantil de una clase en la que conviven alumnos de distintas edades y diversas procedencias, buscando una educación adaptada a sus diferentes características. Tanto las actividades como la metodología, así como las medidas de evaluación, objetivos propuestos y competencias a conseguir, enmarcados dentro de lo que dicta la Ley, persiguen una contribución a su desarrollo físico, afectivo, social e intelectual. La principal finalidad de este proyecto busca atender progresivamente a su desarrollo afectivo, al movimiento y control corporal, a su integración y relación con los compañeros y al descubrimiento del medio que le rodea.

O desenvolvimento de qualquer investigação pressupõe a existência de algo que nos inquieta e nos induz curiosidade e este trabalho não constitui uma exceção. Assim sendo, formulou-se como objetivo de investigação: observar a relação entre a cultura, a criatividade, e a arte e os fenómenos de inclusão social, tendo como base de estudo, as Indústrias Culturais e Criativas. Para tal, foi utilizado uma metodologia qualitativa de natureza descritiva e exploratória, com aplicação de entrevistas semiestruturadas. De acordo com os relatórios do Banco Mundial e da própria Comissão Europeia, as indústrias criativas estão entre os setores mais dinâmicos do comércio internacional. Apesar da crise, entre 2002 e 2008, as indústrias criativas continuaram sua expansão e tiveram uma taxa média de crescimento de 14%. O Banco mundial contabilizou em 2003 um PIB de 7% da responsabilidade das ICCs, com previsões de aumento na ordem dos 10% ao ano. A OCDE refere-se às ICCs como o setor que lidera o crescimento com taxas que variam entre 5 a 20% crescimento nos países da OCDE. No Reino Unido por exemplo as ICCs empregam 1, 3 milhões de pessoas. O mesmo relatório da OCDE indica que as ICCs são também uma oportunidade para países em vias de desenvolvimento embora nem todos estes países tenham reconhecido o seu potencial. Nos países em desenvolvimento onde a exclusão social tem uma relação forte com os índices de criminalidade e há pouca mão-de-obra qualificada, ampliar escolhas no setor cultural pode atrair jovens. Procurando obter luz sobre o potencial das indústrias culturais e criativas como facilitadoras de processos de inclusão social, realizei o estudo de dois casos considerados referências na inclusão social, bem como entrevistas a entidades com experiências quer no campo social quer no campo cultural e criativo. he development of any research presupposes the existence of something that disturbs us and induces us curiosity and this work is no exception. Thus was formulated as objective research: observe the relationship between culture, creativity, and art with the phenomena of social inclusion, based on the study, the Cultural and Creative Industries. To this end, a qualitative methodology of descriptive and exploratory nature, with the application of semi-structured interviews was used. According to reports from the World Bank and the European Commission itself, the creative industries are among the most dynamic sectors of international trade. Despite the crisis, between 2002 and 2008, the creative industries continued its expansion and had an average growth rate of 14%. The World Bank in 2003 recorded a GDP of 7% the responsibility of ICCs with predicted increase of about 10% per year. The OECD refers to ICCs as a leading sector with rates ranging from 5 to 20% growth in OECD countries. In the UK for example the ICCs employ 1, 3 million people. The same report from OECD indicates that ICCs are also an opportunity for developing countries, although not all of these countries have recognized their potential. In developing countries where social exclusion has a strong relationship with crime rates and there is little labor, skilled labor, expand choices in the cultural sector can attract young people. Seeking some more understanding on the potential of cultural and creative industries as facilitators of social inclusion processes, I undertook the study of two cases considered references on social inclusion, as well as interviews with entities with experience both in the social field and in the cultural and creative field.

The morphological and functional characters of the leaves which help absorption of water and adjustment of the water potential aid to maintain hydration of the plant tissues. Experiments with apoplastic tracer showed the peltate trichomes of Combretum leprosum absorb water and this reaches the mesophyll cells. Measurements of water potential after simulation of dew on the leaves resulted in increased water potential of them. The occurrence of pectic substances in the ordinary cell walls, peltate trichomes and polysaccharide in the mesophyll cells was demonstrated by ruthenium red. The leaf ability to absorb dew and the occurrence of the hydrophilic polysaccharides in trichomes and in the mesophyll cells improved hydric status leaves. In the caatinga dew can be an alternative water source for plants and possibly affect the phenology. Os caracteres morfofuncionais das folhas que auxiliam na absorção de água e regulação do potencial hídrico contribuem para a manutenção e hidratação dos tecidos vegetais. Experimentos com traçador apoplástico demostraram que os tricomas peltados de Combretum leprosum absorvem água e esta alcança as células do mesofilo. As medidas do potencial hídrico após a simulação de orvalho resultou no aumento do potencial hídrico nas folhas. A ocorrência de substâncias pécticas nas paredes das células ordinárias, nos tricomas peltados e polissacarídeos nas células do mesofilo foram demonstrados com vermelho de rutênio. A capacidade das folhas em absorver o orvalho e a presença de polissacarídeos hidrofílicos nos tricomas e nas células do mesofilo melhoraram o status hídrico das folhas. Na caatinga o orvalho pode ser uma fonte hídrica alternativa para as plantas e possivelmente afeta a fenologia das plantas.
