Abstract In this review paper, a critical assessment of the main degradation processes in three key components of solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysers (negative and positive electrodes and the interconnect) is undertaken, attempting prioritization of respective degradation effects and recommendation of the best approaches in their experimental ascertainment and numerical modeling. Besides different approaches to quantifying the degradation rate of an operating solid oxide cell (SOC), the latest advancements in microstructural representation (3D imaging and reconstruction) of SOC electrodes are reviewed, applied to the quantification of triple‐phase boundary (TPB) lengths and morphology evolution over time. The intrinsic degradation processes in the negative (fuel) electrode and the positive (oxygen) electrode are discussed, covering first the composition and governing mechanisms of the respective electrodes, followed by a comprehensive evaluation of the most important factors of degradation during operation. By this systematic identification of dominant degradation processes, measurement techniques, and modeling approaches, the foundations are laid for the definition of meaningful accelerated stress testing of SOC cells and stacks, which will help the technology achieve the constantly more demanding durability targets in market applications.

We report a 47 years old women affected by lymphomatoid papulosis and concomitant mucinous adenocarcinoma of the sigma. Our experience underlines the relevance of performing accurate staging investigations in all lymphomatoid papulosis patients at the time of diagnosis, even in those that are asymptomatic, like our patient, not only for correct classification but also for cancer screening. Clinicians must be aware of the increased risk of lymphomatoid papulosis patients to develop haematological malignancies and non-haematological malignancies compared to general population at the time of diagnosis and at follow-up and therefore lymphomatoid papulosis patients must regularly follow cancer screening programs.

Until recently endometrial cancer has classically been divided into two categories, type 1 estrogen-dependent and predominantly endometrioid and type 2 estrogen-independent and predominantly serous, according to etiological and morphological factors. The advent of molecular oncology has led to a new classification based on cancer mutational features centered on the analysis of p53, POLE and the microsatellite status. These new findings have provided the rationale for endometrial cancer to benefit from immunotherapy as well. Here, we describe the case of a patient with advanced recurrent endometrial cancer and microsatellite instability who obtained a durable complete remission with Pembrolizumab even if she developed immune-related interstitial pneumonitis. Therefore, due to its remarkable efficacy, immunotherapy is a reasonable therapeutic option for pretreated endometrial cancer patients; nonetheless,careful surveillance during therapy is necessary for the risk of developing severe immune-related adverse events.

The efficacy mepolizumab in severe asthmatic patients is proven in the literature. Primarily to study the effect of mepolizumab on exacerbations, steroid dependence, and the continuation of efficacy in the long term. Secondarily to evaluate the effect of the drug on nasal polyps. Analyzing data from SANI (Severe Asthma Network Italy) clinics, we observed severe asthmatic patients treated with mepolizumab 100 mg/4 weeks, for a period of 3 years. 157 patients were observed. Exacerbations were reduced from the first year (−84.6%) and progressively to 90 and 95% in the second and third ones. Steroid-dependent patients decreased from 54% to 21% and subsequently to 11% in the second year and 6% in the third year. Patients with concomitant nasal polyps, assessed by SNOT-22, showed a 49% reduction in value from baseline to the third year. The study demonstrated the long-term efficacy of mepolizumab in a real-life setting.

Thunderstorms have different features in comparison with synoptic events, including a typical nose-shaped mean wind speed profile and non-stationary characteristics in time intervals from 10 min to 1 h. The simulation of thunderstorms in traditional wind tunnels requires suitable devices in order to replicate their peculiar characteristics. Disregarding the non-stationary characteristics of thunderstorm outflows, this paper aims to study the possibility of adopting a passive device such as a specially designed grid in order to reproduce the nose-shaped mean wind speed profile. A widely adopted model of the mean wind velocity profile from the literature is employed as a target profile for the verification of the experimental findings. The results obtained show a good agreement between the measured and target mean wind speed profiles and an acceptable turbulence intensity level compared with full-scale and experimental measurements. The proposed device offers a practical and cost-effective solution to simulate the main characteristics of a thunderstorm event in a traditional atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel, which could be adopted to assess the significance of thunderstorm loading on civil engineering structures and define the requirement for ad hoc specialist studies.

Objective: This review aims to provide a summary of the clinical indications and limitations of PET imaging with different radiotracers, including 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) and other radiopharmaceuticals, in pediatric neuro-oncology, discussing both supratentorial and infratentorial tumors, based on recent literature (from 2010 to present). Methods: A literature search of the PubMed/MEDLINE database was carried out searching for articles on the use of PET in pediatric brain tumors. The search was updated until December 2020 and limited to original studies published in English after 1 January 2010. Results: 18F-FDG PET continues to be successfully employed in different settings in pediatric neuro-oncology, including diagnosis, grading and delineation of the target for stereotactic biopsy, estimation of prognosis, evaluation of recurrence, treatment planning and assessment of treatment response. Nevertheless, non-18F-FDG tracers, especially amino acid analogues seem to show a better performance in each clinical setting. Conclusions: PET imaging adds important information in the diagnostic work-up of pediatric brain tumors. International or national multicentric studies are encouraged in order to collect larger amount of data.

Two Venetian types of swords coming from the “Luigi Marzoli” Arms Museum in Brescia were characterized in this study, to understand their manufacturing process and to gather information about their provenance. Both the blades and the hilts components are analyzed using a multi-methodological approach, to describe possible differences in the metallurgical features that involved classical metallographic and spectroscopic techniques. Microstructural results indicate a complex process for the manufacturing of the blades, by hot-forging, confirmed by a sequence of different microstructures even on the same sample. Furthermore, an interesting and unusual manufacturing technique is used on one of the pommels, which consists of two hemispheres connected by copper joints. Hypothesis about the ironmaking and the provenience of raw materials are obtained by the features and composition of the inclusions. It is suggested that there is the use of both a direct and an indirect process on the swords. It is likely that the minerals used to obtain iron and copper of the swords come from the mines of the Brescia and Bergamo territories. All the hypotheses are consistent with the historical documents of the time that also give information on the diffusion of such swords in the Brescia area.

The linear galloping of prismatic structures having double-symmetric cross-section, subjected to steady wind flow acting along a symmetry axis, is investigated. The continuous system is reduced to a three degree-of-freedom system via a Galerkin approach. The quasi-steady assumption for the aerodynamic forces is applied, under the hypothesis that the galloping instability is well-separated from the vortex induced vibration phenomenon. Due to the structural symmetry conditions and accounting for the aerodynamic coupling, galloping is of flexural-torsional type, occurring in the direction orthogonal to the incident wind. Moreover, coupling is stronger close to the resonance between the flexural and torsional degrees of freedom. A linear stability diagram is built up in a two-parameter space, highlighting the role of coupling in modifying the critical wind velocity, and in producing a veering phenomenon between the two modes. The existence of points at which a double-Hopf bifurcation manifests itself is detected. Both exact and perturbation solutions are provided, these latter in the non-resonant and resonant cases, useful to throw light on the interactive mechanisms. The resonant perturbation solution permits to analytically investigate under which conditions coupling has a detrimental effect on galloping, which manifests at a wind velocity lower than the flexural and torsional critical velocities. Situations where coupling between modes leads to beneficial effect with respect to the Den Hartog's critical wind velocity are also highlighted. As an application, galloping of a family of multi-story tower buildings having a square cross-section is studied.

The angular dependence is a well-known issue in metasurface engineering. Here the authors introduce a supercell metasurface able to implement multiple independent functions under large deflection angles with high efficiency, leading to a wavelength tunable laser with arbitrary wavefront control.

The study reports the enzymatic synthesis of bio-based oligoesters and chemo-enzymatic processes for obtaining epoxidized bioplasticizers and biolubricants starting from cardoon seed oil. All of the molecules had MW below 1000 g mol−1 and were analyzed in terms of marine biodegradation. The data shed light on the effects of the chemical structure, chemical bond lability, thermal behavior, and water solubility on biodegradation. Moreover, the analysis of the biodegradation of the building blocks that constituted the different bio-based products allowed us to distinguish between different chemical and physicochemical factors. These hints are of major importance for the rational eco-design of new benign bio-based products. Overall, the high lability of ester bonds was confirmed, along with the negligible effect of the presence of epoxy rings on triglyceride structures. The biodegradation data clearly indicated that the monomers/building blocks undergo a much slower process of abiotic or biotic transformations, potentially leading to accumulation. Therefore, the simple analysis of the erosion, hydrolysis, or visual/chemical disappearance of the chemical products or plastic is not sufficient, but ecotoxicity studies on the effects of such small molecules are of major importance. The use of natural feedstocks, such as vegetable seed oils and their derivatives, allows the minimization of these risks, because microorganisms have evolved enzymes and metabolic pathways for processing such natural molecules.

In the last few years, blockchain has emerged as a cutting-edge technology whose main advantages are transparency, traceability, immutability, enhanced efficiency, and trust, thanks to its decentralized nature. Although many people still identify blockchain with cryptocurrencies and the financial sector, it has many prospective applications beyond digital currency that can serve as use cases for which traditional infrastructures have become obsolete. Governments have started exploring its potential application to public services provision, as confirmed by the increasing number of adoption initiatives, projects, and tests. As the current public administration is often perceived as slow, bureaucratic, lacking transparency, and failing to involve citizens in decision-making processes, blockchain can establish itself as a tool that enables a process of disintermediation, which can revolutionize the way in which public services are managed and provided. In this paper, we will provide a survey of the main application areas which are likely to benefit from blockchain implementation, together with examples of practical implementations carried out by both state and local governments. Later, we will discuss the main challenges that may prevent its widespread adoption, such as government expenditure, technological maturity, and lack of public awareness. Finally, we will wrap up by providing indications on future areas of research for blockchain-based technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although afforestation is a potential strategy to mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon, its potential biophysical effects on climate, such as regulating surface albedo, evapotranspiration, and energy balance, have not been fully incorporated into climate change mitigation strategies. This is partly due to the challenges associated with modeling the complex bidirectional interactions between vegetation and climate. In this study, we assess the impact of afforestation on low cloud cover using a regional climate model (RCM) and Earth observation data, applying a space‐for‐time approach to overcome limitations that may arise from comparing satellite and RCM results, such as different background climate conditions or different extents of land cover change. Our results show a consistent increase in low cloud cover in Europe due to afforestation in both datasets (3.71% and 3.56% on average, respectively), but the magnitude and direction of this effect depend on various factors, including location, seasonality, and forest type. These results suggest that afforestation can have important feedbacks on the climate system, and that its biophysical effects must be considered in climate change mitigation strategies. Furthermore, we emphasize the role of the modeling community in developing accurate and reliable approaches to assess the biophysical effects of land cover change on climate. These results indicate that forests can have significant impacts on the climate system, and it is important to consider these effects when developing climate change strategies. We also emphasize the need for accurate modeling to better understand how changes in forest cover influence the climate. Ebola virus (EBOV) infections cause haemorrhagic fever, multi-organ failure and death, and survivors can experience neurological sequelae. Licensing of monoclonal antibodies targeting EBOV glycoprotein (EBOV-GP) improved its prognosis, however, this treatment is primarily effective during early stages of disease and its effectiveness in reducing neurological sequela remains unknown. Currently, the need for BSL4 containment hinders research and therapeutic development; development of an accessible BSL-2 in vivo mouse model would facilitate preclinical studies to screen and select therapeutics. Previously, we have shown that a subcutaneous inoculation with replicating EBOV-GP pseudotyped vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSVΔG-EBOV-GP or VSV-EBOV) in neonatal mice causes transient viremia and infection of the mid and posterior brain resulting in overt neurological symptoms and death. Here, we demonstrate that the model can be used to test therapeutics that target the EBOV-GP, by using an anti-EBOV-GP therapeutic (SAB-139) previously shown to block EBOV infection in mice and primates. We show that SAB-139 treatment decreases the severity of neurological symptoms and improves survival when administered before (1 day prior to infection) or up to 3 dpi, by which time animals have high virus titres in their brains. Improved survival was associated with reduced viral titres, microglia loss, cellular infiltration/activation, and inflammatory responses in the brain. Interestingly, SAB-139 treatment significantly reduced the severe VSV-EBOV-induced long-term neurological sequalae although convalescent mice showed modest evidence of abnormal fear responses. Together, these data suggest that the neonatal VSV-EBOV infection system can be used to facilitate assessment of therapeutics targeting EBOV-GP in the preclinical setting.

Abstract Motor imagery (MI) is the mental simulation of an action without any overt motor execution. Interestingly, a temporal coupling between durations of real and imagined movements, i.e., the so-called isochrony principle, has been demonstrated in healthy adults. On the contrary, anisochrony has frequently been reported in elderly subjects or those with neurological disease such as Parkinson disease or multiple sclerosis (MS). Here, we tested whether people with MS (PwMS) may have impaired MI when they imagined themselves walking on paths with different widths. When required to mentally simulate a walking movement along a constrained pathway, PwMS tended to overestimate mental movement duration with respect to actual movement duration. Interestingly, in line with previous evidence, cognitive fatigue was found to play a role in the MI of PwMS. These results suggest that investigating the relationship between cognitive fatigue and MI performances could be key to shedding new light on the motor representation of PwMS and providing critical insights into effective and tailored rehabilitative treatments.
