International audience; Stand harvesting and regeneration were usually considered to be a critical phase for the sustainability of forest soils. The present study concerned the effects on soil chemical fertility of the clear-cutting of a highly productive Douglas-fir stand aged 67 years that was clear-cut with no disturbance. Results showed that soil changes were rapid in the three-year period following the cutting. The forest floor mass considerably decreased and the mineral soil showed a limited but real acidification. Soil losses represented 4% of the available nutrients over a depth of 60 cm for N, 22% for K, 25% for Ca and 32% for Mg. Only P increased by 11%. Due to the spatial variability of forest soils, and despite regular re-sampling, confidence intervals were large and difficult to reduce. The reversibility of the effects of the clear-cutting and its consequences on soil functions depend on the element: it should not be a problem for C, N and K, which would recover when the biological cycle is re-established once again in the young stand. Phosphorus is not at issue since it changes form in the soil. The depletion of Ca, and to a lesser extent of Mg, is of some concern as a result of limited soil reserves, the limited flux of cations from the mineral changes in the soil, the relatively large part of Ca and Mg in the forest floor, and the negative input-output budgets for those elements. The duration of the impact of the clear-cutting on soil requires medium-term observations because it cannot be deduced from the current knowledge of this ecosystem.; La récolte des peuplements est une phase critique pour la durabilité des sols forestiers. Cette étude concerne les effets de la coupe à blanc d’un peuplement de Douglas de 67 ans, réalisée sans perturbation, sur la fertilité organo-minérale du sol. Les résultats montrent que l’évolution du sol est rapide dans la période de trois ans après la coupe. La couche organique décroît fortement et le sol minéral se désature et s’acidifie. Les pertes représentent 4 % des éléments disponibles du sol sur 60 cm pour N, 22 % pour K, 25 % pour Ca et 32 % pour Mg. Seul P augmente de 11 %. Cependant, la variabilité spatiale des sols forestiers et la technique de l’observatoire, par échantillonnages successifs, conduisent à des intervalles de confiance larges autour de ces valeurs, intervalles qui s’avèrent difficile à réduire. La réversibilité des modifications du sol dépend des éléments : elle ne devrait pas poser de problème pour C, N et K. P n’est pas en cause puisqu’il change de forme dans le sol mais aucune perte n’est notée. Les pertes de Ca voire de Mg sont les plus préoccupantes en raison des faibles réserves du sol, du flux limité de cations issu de l’altération des minéraux du sol, de la part relativement élevée des ces éléments dans les couches organiques, et de leur bilan entrées-sorties négatif. La durée de l’effet de la coupe à blanc nécessite des observations sur le moyen terme car elle ne peut pas être déduite des connaissances actuelles sur cet écosystème.

We studied the effects of two fertilization treatments (N and NPKCa) on wood nitrogen (N) isotope composition (15N), water-use efficiency (WUE) estimated by carbon isotope composition (13C) analyses, and ring width of trees in 80-year-old beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stands in the forest of Fougères, western France. Four replicates were fertilized in two successive years (1973 and 1974), 20 years before core sampling. Unfertilized control trees displayed a decreasing 15N trend with time. The N and NPKCa treatments both increased 15N compared with the control treatment. Wood extraction by organic solvents enhanced the 15N signal. Thus, N addition to the beech ecosystem, even in moderate amounts, could be traced back in tree-ring 15N, suggesting that wood N isotope analysis is a promising tool for studying the long-term effects of N deposition on forests. Although WUE decreased for about 6 years after N fertilization, WUE in NPKCa-treated trees did not differ significantly from that in control trees. Results were similar whether based on cellulose or total wood 13Canalysis, suggesting that extraction of cellulose is not necessary when studying fertilization impacts on WUE. Our knowledge of the real impact on forests of rapid environmental changes which occurred during the last century is still very limited. Between in situ studies, which started only very recently, and palaeoecological data, the time or spatial resolution of which does not allow a fine description of the last decades, we present here a synthesis of our work on current dynamics in the French mountains. We used a diachronic (resampling studies) or dendrochronological (tree-ring based information) approach. In the Vosges mountains, we observed an acidification of soils and an increase of acidophilous species, as well as a decrease of the C/N ratio in the soil. In the Alps, a significant upward shift of vegetation occurred during the last 22 years. Radial growth of trees increased by a large amount for all species, in all regions under study. These changes can be partly ascribed to atmospheric deposition and global change (climate change, C02 increase). However, direct human impact, mainly pastoralism and sylviculture, or natural processes linked to tree ageing and ecosystem maturation, and possible methodological bias could also explain part of our results. Some research perspectives are finally given., Notre connaissance de la réaction des forêts aux changements environnementaux intervenus au cours du siècle écoulé est encore très partielle. Entre les études de suivi in situ d'écosystèmes forestiers, démarrées très récemment, et la paléoécologie classique dont la résolution temporelle ou spatiale ne permet pas l'étude fine des dernières décennies, nous présentons ici une synthèse de nos travaux portant sur la dynamique récente des forêts de montagne françaises. Notre approche est diachronique (ré-échantillonnage de la végétation ou des sols) ou dendrochronologique (utilisation de l'information contenue dam les cernes des arbres). Dans les montagnes vosgiennes, nous observons une acidification des sols et de la végétation, ainsi qu'un accroissement de la disponibilité en azote. Dans les Alpes, une progression en altitude de la végétation est mise en évidence. On constate enfin une augmentation de la croissance radiale des arbres, quelle que soit l'espèce ou la région étudiée. Ces évolutions sont en partie imputables aux dépôts atmosphériques et aux changements globaux (climat, CO2). Les actions humaines directes, principalement le pastoralisme et la sylviculture, mais aussi les modifications liées au vieillissement des arbres ou à la maturation des écosystèmes, et d'éventuels biais méthodologiques non encore décelés pourraient aussi expliquer certaines de nos observations. Quelques perspectives de recherches issues de ces résultats sont données.
