Abstract

The literature on feminism and multiculturalism has identified potential conflicts between the recognition of cultural diversity and securing women's equality. Three broad approaches to this dilemma have emerged in the practices of contemporary states: regulation, working with the communities, and exit. Each of these is apparent in current initiatives regarding forced marriage, but the overwhelming emphasis in the UK has been on enabling individuals to exit from the threat or reality of a forced marriage. In assessing these initiatives, this paper highlights the limitations of exit and the danger of moving towards immigration regulation as the preferred solution.

Abstract

People living with diabetes are at risk of foot ulcers, leading to amputations. Jayne Robbie, in collaboration with the iDEAL group, discusses how ACT NOW can provide a practical toolkit to reduce amputations in this groupFoot problems are often associated with multiple limb-threatening co-morbidities for people with diabetes. It has been suggested that many of these amputations could be avoided if foot ulcers are effectively detected, assessed, referred and rapidly treated in order to optimise healing. All health professionals in both primary and secondary care can have a pivotal role to play to reduce major amputations by 50%. Adopting ACT NOW and using this tool routinely, can reduce the unacceptably high volume of major amputations.

The novel concerns an orphan who is sent to college by a benefactor. The developing voice of the protagonist demonstrates the transformations a young woman can undergo in college.

The new perspective however, argues that social harmony can be achieved despite the existence of such differences. Social theorists provide their own views on the issue.

Abstract

The view that multiculturalism implies relativism is unfounded. Each culture is entitled to equal respect but equal respect does not mean suspension of critical judgement. The concern of fragmentation related to multiculturalism underestimates human capacity for negotiation and compromise. Consistency in treatment hardly translates into uniformity and often requires differential treatment. Also, undemocratic practices arising out of lending primacy to a culture poses a problem for multiculturalism. It can be solved by equitable treatment of minority and majority cultures.
