We present a finite temperature ($T$) study of the t-J model on the two-dimensional triangular lattice for the negative hopping $t$, as relevant for the electron-doped Na$_x$CoO$_2$ (NCO). To understand several aspects of this system, we study the $T$-dependent chemical potential, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and the dynamic Hall-coefficient across the entire doping range. We show systematically, how this simplest model for strongly correlated electrons describes a crossover as function of doping ($x$) from a Pauli-like weakly spin-correlated metal close to the band-limit (density $n=2$) to the Curie-Weiss metallic phase ($1.5

Within the t-J model we study several experimentally accessible properties of the 2D-triangular lattice system Na$_x$CoO$_2$, using a numerically exact canonical ensemble study of 12 to 18 site triangular toroidal clusters as well as the icosahedron. Focusing on the doping regime of $x\sim0.7$, we study the temperature dependent chemical potential, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and the dynamic Hall coefficient $R_H(T,\omega)$ as well as the magnetic field dependent thermopower. We find a crossover between two phases near $x \sim 0.75$ in susceptibility and field suppression of the thermopower arising from strong correlations. An interesting connection is found between the temperature dependence of the diamagnetic susceptibility and the Hall-coefficient. We predict a large thermopower enhancement, arising from {\em transport corrections} to the Heikes-Mott formula, in a model situation where the sign of hopping is reversed from that applicable to Na$_x$CoO$_2$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

This study sought to determine the differences between perceptions of school superintendents and school board presidents in Louisiana public school districts on the criterion variable of superintendent competencies needed for continued employment in the superintendency. It sought as well to determine if these differences are related to the variables of age, gender, years of experience, and size of district. The ultimate goal was to provide data from the study to the Louisiana School Boards Association and the Louisiana Association of School Superintendents. Subjects were drawn from 66 public school superintendents and public school board presidents. There was no significant difference in the importance perceived by public school board presidents and superintendents of Louisiana on the superintendent competencies. Each of the superintendent competencies was similarly valued regarding the level of importance placed on them by superintendents and board presidents. Exact diagonalization of a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field in the disk geometry shows that there exists a filling factor range in the second Landau level where the states significantly differ from those in the lowest Landau level. We show that the difference arises because the interaction between composite fermions is not negligible in higher Landau levels, as indicated by a substantial mixing between composite-fermion Landau-like levels, or lambda levels. We find that the exact ground state is well reproduced by composite fermion theory with lambda level mixing incorporated at the lowest level of approximation. Using the same variational approach in the spherical geometry we estimate the excitation gap at filling 1/3 in the second Landau level (which corresponds to 7/3 of experiment)., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. The low energy physics of the fractional Hall liquid is described in terms quasiparticles that are qualitatively distinct from electrons. We show, however, that a long-lived electron-like quasiparticle also exists in the excitation spectrum: the state obtained by the application of an electron creation operator to a fractional quantum Hall ground state has a non-zero overlap with a complex, high energy bound state containing an odd number of composite-fermion quasiparticles. The electron annihilation operator similarly couples to a bound complex of composite-fermion holes. We predict that these bound states can be observed through a conductance resonance in experiments involving a tunneling of an external electron into the fractional quantum Hall liquid. Past theoretical studies have considered excitations of a given flavor of composite fermions across composite-fermion quasi-Landau levels. We show that in general there exists a ladder of flavor changing excitations in which composite fermions shed none, some, or all of their vortices. The lowest energy excitations are obtained when the composite fermions do not change their flavor, whereas in the highest energy excitations they are stripped of all of their vortices, emerging as electrons in the final state. The results are relevant to the intriguing experimental discovery of Hirjibehedin {\em et al.} (cond-mat/0306152) of coexisting excitation modes of composite fermions of different flavor in the filling factor range $1/3>\nu\geq 1/5$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present extensive comparisons of the composite fermion theory with exact results in the filling factor range $2/5>\nu>1/3$, which affirm that the composite fermion theory correctly describes the qualitative reorganization of the low energy Hilbert space of the strongly correlated electrons, and predicts eigenenergies with an accuracy of $\sim 0.1$ %. The interaction potential energy surface (PES) of He-H2 is of great importance for quantum chemistry, as the simplest test case for interactions between a molecule and a closed-shell atom. It is also required for a detailed understanding of certain astrophysical processes, namely collisional excitation and dissociation of H2 in molecular clouds, at densities too low to be accessible experimentally. A new set of 23703 ab initio energies was computed, for He-H2 geometries where the interaction energy was expected to be non-negligible. These have an estimated rms "random" error of about 0.2 millihartree and a systematic error of about 0.6 millihartree (0.4 kcal/mol). A new analytic He-H2 PES, with 112 parameters, was fitted to 20203 of these new ab initio energies (and to an additional 4862 points generated at large separations). This yielded an improvement by better than an order of magnitude in the fit to the interaction region, relative to the best previous surfaces (which were accurate only for near-equilibrium H2 molecule sizes). This new PES has an rms error of 0.95 millihartree (0.60 kcal/mole) relative to the the 14585 ab initio energies that lie below twice the H2 dissociation energy, and 2.97 millihartree (1.87 kcal/mole) relative to the full set of 20203 ab initio energies (the fitting procedure used a reduced weight for high energies, yielding a weighted rms error of 1.42 millihartree, i.e., 0.89 kcal/mole). These rms errors are comparable to the estimated error in the ab initio energies themselves; the conical intersection between the ground state and the first excited state is the largest source of error in the PES., Comment: (44 pages, including 13 figures) error in Eq. The two dimensional system of electrons in a high magnetic field offers an opportunity to investigate a phase transition from a quantum liquid into a Wigner solid. Recent experiments have revealed an incipient composite fermion liquid in a parameter range where theory and many experiments had previously suggested the Wigner crystal phase, thus calling into question our current understanding. This Letter shows how very small quantitative corrections (< 1%) in the energy due to the weak interaction between composite fermions can cause a fundamental change in the nature of the ground state, thus providing insight into the puzzling experimental results., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures
