Flowering phenology is important in the adaptation of many plants to their local environment, but its adaptive value has not been extensively studied in herbaceous perennials. We used Arabis alpina as a model system to determine the importance of flowering phenology to fitness of a herbaceous perennial with a wide geographical range. Individual plants representative of local genetic diversity (accessions) were collected across Europe, including in Spain, the Alps and Scandinavia. The flowering behaviour of these accessions was documented in controlled conditions, in common-garden experiments at native sites and in situ in natural populations. Accessions from the Alps and Scandinavia varied in whether they required exposure to cold (vernalization) to induce flowering, and in the timing and duration of flowering. By contrast, all Spanish accessions obligately required vernalization and had a short duration of flowering. Using experimental gardens at native sites, we show that an obligate requirement for vernalization increases survival in Spain. Based on our analyses of genetic diversity and flowering behaviour across Europe, we propose that in the model herbaceous perennial A. alpina, an obligate requirement for vernalization, which is correlated with short duration of flowering, is favoured by selection in Spain where the plants experience a long growing season. Summary: The evolution of annual or perennial strategies in flowering plants likely depends on a broad array of temperature and precipitation variables. Previous documented climate life‐history correlations in explicit phylogenetic frameworks have been limited to certain clades and geographic regions.To gain insights which generalize to multiple lineages we employ a multi‐clade approach analyzing 32 groups of angiosperms across eight climatic variables. We utilize a recently developed method that accounts for the joint evolution of continuous and discrete traits to evaluate two hypotheses: annuals tend to evolve in highly seasonal regions prone to extreme heat and drought; and annuals tend to have faster rates of climatic niche evolution than perennials.We find that temperature, particularly highest temperature of the warmest month, is the most consistent climatic factor influencing the evolution of annual strategy in flowering plants. Unexpectedly, we do not find significant differences in rates of climatic niche evolution between perennial and annual lineages.We propose that annuals are consistently favored in areas prone to extreme heat due to their ability to escape heat stress as seeds, but they tend to be outcompeted by perennials in regions where extreme heat is uncommon or nonexistent. Crop perennialization has garnered global attention recently due to its role in sustainable agriculture. However, there is still a lack of detailed information regarding perennial rice's regenerative characteristics and physiological mechanisms in crop ratooning systems with different rice stubble heights. In addition, the response of phytohormones to varying stubble heights and how this response influences the regenerative characteristics of ratoon rice remains poorly documented. Here, we explored the regenerative characteristics and physiological mechanisms of an annual hybrid rice, AR2640, and a perennial rice, PR25, subjected to different stubble heights (5, 10, and 15 cm). The response of phytohormones to varying stubble heights and how this response influences the regenerative characteristics of ratoon rice were also investigated. The results show that PR25 overwintered successfully and produced the highest yield, especially in the second ratoon season, mainly due to its extended growth duration, higher number of mother stems, tillers at the basal nodes, higher number of effective panicles, and heavier grain weight when subjected to lower stubble heights. Further analysis revealed that PR25 exhibited a higher regeneration rate from the lower-position nodes in the stem with lower stubble heights. this was primarily due to the higher contents of phytohormones, especially auxin (IAA) and gibberellin (GA3) at an early stage and abscisic acid (ABA) at a later stage after harvesting of the main crop. Our findings reveal how ratoon rice enhances performance based on different stubble heights, which provides valuable insights and serves as crucial references for delving deeper into cultivating high-yielding perennial rice. Perennial trees must maintain stem growth throughout their entire lifespan to progressively increase in size as they age. The overarching question of the molecular mechanisms that govern stem perennial growth in trees remains largely unanswered. Here we deciphered the genetic architecture that underlies perennial growth trajectories using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for measures of growth traits across years in a natural population of Populus tomentosa. By analyzing the stem growth trajectory, we identified PtoP4H9, encoding prolyl 4-hydroxylase 9, which is responsible for the natural variation in the growth rate of diameter at breast height (DBH) across years. Quantifying the dynamic genetic contribution of PtoP4H9 loci to stem growth showed that PtoP4H9 played a pivotal role in stem growth regulation. Spatiotemporal expression analysis showed that PtoP4H9 was highly expressed in cambium tissues of poplars of various ages. Overexpression and knockdown of PtoP4H9 revealed that it altered cell expansion to regulate cell wall modification and mechanical characteristics, thereby promoting stem growth in Populus. We showed that natural variation in PtoP4H9 occurred in a BASIC PENTACYSTEINE transcription factor PtoBPC1-binding promoter element controlling PtoP4H9 expression. The geographic distribution of PtoP4H9 allelic variation was consistent with the modes of selection among populations. Altogether, our study provides important genetic insights into dynamic stem growth in Populus, and we confirmed PtoP4H9 as a potential useful marker for breeding or genetic engineering of poplars. Native seed vendors are a primary source of germplasm for restoration projects; however, most plant species are not commercially available. Preferences in the types of species that vendors grow and sell may limit the similarity between reference communities and reconstructed ones established from seed mixes. We tested whether a restoration species pool shows preference for certain groups of species, focusing on the Ozark Highland Ecoregion (midcontinent United States). We identified the pool of 1,082 candidate herbaceous plant species appropriate for restoration projects on upland habitats in this region, and then surveyed nine regional seed vendors to assess their commercial availability. Commercially available species were more likely to be forbs over graminoids, perennials over annuals, and common species with larger ranges and moderate conservatism scores. Within forbs, taller species and those with longer bloom durations were favored. Species with affinity to open habitats (e.g. grassland) were more likely to be available from multiple vendors than those from woodlands and forests. Encouragingly, 454 (42%) of the species in this regional pool were available. However, this means that most species in the region are not likely to be included in seed mixes, unless they are hand‐collected from remnant populations. This restoration pool favors common and showy species, which is consistent with previous studies showing these kinds of species tend to dominate seed mixes and restored plant communities. For over 30 years, the Journal of the Society for Provision of Education in Rural Australia has reported research and practice discourses associated with rural, regional and remote education, with the aim of impacting policy and practices relating to education in rural Australia. The journal, originally named Education in Rural Australia, commenced in 1991 and, with an increasingly international focus, changed to the Australian and International Journal of Rural Education in 2012. This article critically synthesises the content of the Journal, which includes 500 unique contributions. The articles were placed into an NVivo project and coded using themes derived from word frequency counts. The critical analysis identifies nine perennial themes that appear regularly throughout the 33 volumes: aspiration, success and achievement; community and relationships at the centre of rural education; curriculum, pedagogy and assessment; deficit discourses; equity, rights and justice; parents and family; resourcing and funding; rurality and place, and teacher preparation. In addition, the analysis identifies trending issues, which wax and wane over the Journal’s life. This article highlights the Journal’s important and sustained contribution to research evidence for rural education. From the perennial and trending issues, it is possible to see the interconnections and influences between themes, but also the absence of discourses in certain areas that calls for future research. The analysis has policy implications for education stakeholders, particularly given that some of the concerns raised by the articles in the Journal remain largely unanswered more than 30 years on. Aminopyralid (AP)-contaminated straw mulch is frequently used in strawberry production to maintain moisture and reduce weed growth. AP may be translocated by rain and irrigation. Contamination of plant tissues with AP during the production cycle at a strawberry farm was measured by HPLC MS/MS using a newly validated extraction method. Samples were removed from a commercial plantation using straw mulch. The highest AP levels (1.2–1.3 ng.g−1) were found in strawberries; the levels in leaves and roots were two and four to ten times lower, respectively. The amounts detected in fruits were 10 times lower than the dietary tolerances given by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for wheat grain and cattle milk/meat. The effect of AP on flowering and fruiting was investigated in pot experiments closely mimicking farm conditions. The released AP negatively affected flowering and reduced the total fruit weight two times. The study showed a significant release of AP from mulch straw during commercial strawberry production and documented the risk of using herbicide-contaminated straw for mulching. Thinopyrum intermedium (2n=6x=42, StStJrJrJvsJvs) is resistant or tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses, making it suitable for developing perennial crops and forage. Through five cycles of selection, we developed 24 perennial wheatgrass lines, designated 19HSC-Q and 20HSC-Z, by crossing wheat-Th. intermedium partial amphiploids with Th. intermedium. The cold resistance, morphological performance, chromosome composition, and yield components of these perennial lines were investigated from 2019 to 2022. Six lines of 19HSC-Q had higher 1,000-kernel weight, grains per spike, and tiller number than Th. intermedium, as well as surviving -30°C in winter. Lines 19HSC-Q14, 19HSCQ18, and 19HSC-Q20 had the best performances for grain number per spike and 1,000-kernel weight. The 20HSC-Z lines, 20HSC-Z1, 20HSC-Z2, and 20HSC-Z3, were able to survive in the cold winter in Harbin and had been grown for two years. Sequential multicolor GISH analysis revealed that the Jvs subgenome of Th. intermedium were divided into two karyotypes, three pairs of type-I Jvs chromosomes and four pairs of type-II Jvs chromosomes. Both Th. intermedium and the 24 advanced perennial wheatgrass lines had similar chromosome compositions, but the translocations among subgenome chromosomes were detected in some lines with prominent agronomic traits, such as 19HSC-Q11, 19HSC-Q14, 19HSC-Q18, 19HSC-Q20, and the three 20HSC-Z lines. The chromosome aberrations were distinguished into two types: the large fragment translocation with St-Jr, Jvs-St, Jr-IIJvs, and Jvs-Jr and the small fragment introgression of Jr-St, St-IJvs, and Jvs-Jr. These chromosomal variations can be used to further analyze the relationship between the subgenomes and phenotypes of Th. intermedium. In recent years, the existence of perennial firn aquifers in the Antarctic Peninsula (AP) has been confirmed by in situ observations. Previous studies have suggested that these subsurface aquifers, together with meltwater ponds at the surface, provide a reservoir of liquid water to feed propagating fractures, promoting hydrofracture-driven ice-shelf disintegration. This study maps perennial firn aquifers in the AP from space using C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery from ESA's Sentinel-1 (S1) mission. With these observations, we detect firn aquifers at 1 km × 1 km resolution, for the period 2017 to 2020. Existing methods, that use S1 data and rely on a backscatter intensity difference threshold approach, are prone to misclassify late-melt events as aquifers, when applied to the AP. Therefore, we have developed and evaluated a new approach that is better suited to the Antarctic environment. The new method exploits the characteristic, gradual backscatter increase during the (partial) refreezing of the liquid water in the firn layer after the peak of the melt season. Most firn aquifers are detected in the north and northwest of the AP, as well as on the Wilkins and George VI ice shelves. This study aimed to determine a sainfoin variety best suited to the soil and weather conditions of the Great Lake Basin region inUlaangom soum of Uvs aimag (province). We carried out studies into five varieties of sainfoin, including Peschany 1251, Tashyl 3, Novosibirsky 1284, Shortandisky 83, and Mikhailovsky-5, which were compared with each other without irrigation trial. Sainfoin has a high resistance to cold winter conditions, high temperatures and and dry drought conditions. Sainfoin varieties growing in Mongolia are highly palatable perennial leguminous plants. According to the result of our research, sainfoin is well acclimatized to Uvs province's soil and weather conditions. The variety with the highest performance showing is Taskhyl 3, which was generated atthe Plant Research Center of Khakassia, a republic of Russia located in southern Siberia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Premise: What maintains mixed mating is an evolutionary enigma. Cleistogamy—the production of both potentially outcrossing chasmogamous and obligately selfing cleistogamous flowers on the same individual plant—is an excellent system to study the costs of selfing. Inbreeding depression can prevent the evolution of greater selfing within populations, and heterosis in crosses between populations may further tip the balance in favor of outcrossing. Few empirical estimates of inbreeding depression and heterosis in the same system exist for cleistogamous species. Methods: We investigate the potential costs of selfing by quantifying inbreeding depression and heterosis in three populations of the cleistogamous perennial Ruellia humilis Nutt (Acanthaceae). We performed three types of hand‐pollinations—self, outcross‐within, and outcross‐between populations—and measured seed number, germination, total flower production, and estimated cumulative fitness for the resulting progeny in a greenhouse experiment. Results: We found moderate inbreeding depression for cumulative fitness (<30%) in two populations, but outbreeding depression for crosses within a third population (–26%). For between‐population crosses, there was weak to modest heterosis (11–47%) in two of the population combinations, but modest to strong outbreeding depression (–21 to –71%) in the other four combinations. Conclusions: Neither inbreeding depression nor heterosis was of sufficient magnitude to explain the continued production of chasmogamous flowers given the relative energetic advantage of cleistogamous flowers previously estimated for these populations. Outbreeding depression either within or between populations makes the maintenance of chasmogamous flowers even harder to explain. To address the issue of soil erosion and limited economically valuable vegetation resources, perennial sweet peas were introduced to Hebei Province, China, and showed favorable biological attributes. Nevertheless, its specific efficacy within soil and water conservation endeavors requires further examination. This study selected four trial sites within Hebei Province to assess four-year-old perennial sweet peas' soil and water conservation functionality. The findings underscored that cultivating perennial sweet pea plots on 9° disturbed slopes notably outperformed bare ground (CK) in their rainwater absorption capacity. Specifically, in the 0–20 cm soil layer, moisture increased from 10.51% to 17.39%, in the 20–40 cm layer from 10.63% to 17.25%, and in the 40–60 cm layer from 10.09% to 16.04%. The dense canopy formed by perennial sweet peas effectively intercepted 25–32% of precipitation. Fallen organic matter also demonstrated commendable water absorption features. During severe rain, the perennial sweet pea showcased a 90.4% runoff reduction and a notable sediment interception. Their deep and well-developed root system enhanced soil structure and infiltration. The outcomes of this study highlight the perennial sweet peas' potential in soil erosion mitigation, rainwater retention, and soil improvement, which carries substantial implications for sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration initiatives. Furthermore, the successful introduction of perennial sweet peas could serve as a model for analogous ecological interventions in regions confronting similar challenges, offering holistic solutions to soil and water conservation in environmentally sensitive areas. Background: Drought resistance is a complex characteristic closely related to the severity and duration of stress. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) has no distinct drought tolerance but often encounters drought stress seasonally. Although the response of perennial ryegrass to either extreme or moderate drought stress has been investigated, a comprehensive understanding of perennial ryegrass response to both conditions of drought stress is currently lacking. Results: In this study, we investigated the genetic variation in drought resistance in 18 perennial ryegrass varieties under both extreme and moderate drought conditions. The performance of these varieties exhibited obvious diversity, and the survival of perennial ryegrass under severe stress was not equal to good growth under moderate drought stress. 'Sopin', with superior performance under both stress conditions, was the best-performing variety. Transcriptome, physiological, and molecular analyses revealed that 'Sopin' adapted to drought stress through multiple sophisticated mechanisms. Under stress conditions, starch and sugar metabolic enzymes were highly expressed, while CslA was expressed at low levels in 'Sopin', promoting starch degradation and soluble sugar accumulation. The expression and activity of superoxide dismutase were significantly higher in 'Sopin', while the activity of peroxidase was lower, allowing for 'Sopin' to maintain a better balance between maintaining ROS signal transduction and alleviating oxidative damage. Furthermore, drought stress-related transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulatory mechanisms, including the upregulation of transcription factors, kinases, and E3 ubiquitin ligases, facilitate abscisic acid and stress signal transduction. Conclusion: Our study provides insights into the resistance of perennial ryegrass to both extreme and moderate droughts and the underlying mechanisms by which perennial ryegrass adapts to drought conditions. The domestication process in long‐lived plant perennials differs dramatically from that of annuals, with a huge amount of genetic exchange between crop and wild populations. Though apple is a major fruit crop grown worldwide, the contribution of wild apple species to the genetic makeup of the cultivated apple genome remains a topic of intense study. We used population genomics approaches to investigate the contributions of several wild apple species to European and Chinese rootstock and dessert genomes, with a focus on the extent of wild–crop gene flow. Population genetic structure inferences revealed that the East Asian wild apples, Malus baccata (L.) Borkh and M. hupehensis (Pamp.), form a single panmictic group, and that the European dessert and rootstock apples form a specific gene pool whereas the Chinese dessert and rootstock apples were a mixture of three wild gene pools, suggesting different evolutionary histories of European and Chinese apple varieties. Coalescent‐based inferences and gene flow estimates indicated that M. baccata – M. hupehensis contributed to the genome of both European and Chinese cultivated apples through wild‐to‐crop introgressions, and not as an initial contributor as previously supposed. We also confirmed the contribution through wild‐to‐crop introgressions of Malus sylvestris Mill. to the cultivated apple genome. Apple tree domestication is therefore one example in woody perennials that involved gene flow from several wild species from multiple geographical areas. Ornamental perennial plants play a strategic role in reducing green areas' management costs, keeping the ground, sparing water, and avoiding weeds. The aim of this research is to evaluate the growing performances of seven combinations of six different ornamental perennial herbaceous species and their role in weed containment under low-maintenance conditions. The experiment was performed for three years (2019–2021) in an open field. The selected species were Hemerocallis "Stella de Oro" (A), Phedimus spurius (M.Bieb.) "t Hart 'John Creech" (B), Tulbaghia violacea Harv. (C), Phlox subulata L. "Trot Pink" (D), Potentilla neumanniana Rchb. (E), and Gaillardia "Kobold" (F). Four replicates for each combination were tested (28 plots, 4 m2 each): AB, CD, EF, AB + CD, AB + EF, CD + EF; AB + CD + EF. No watering or fertilization was performed during the cultivation period. Each year, from April to November, three manual weeding activities were performed and the dry weights of the weeds' aerial parts were measured. The ground cover performance was evaluated through digital image analysis using the mobile device application Canopeo. Dry aerial perennial biomass variations between the end and beginning of the experiment were calculated. As a result, CD showed the best performance for weed containment (0.5 g m−2 weed dry weight in the third year), ground cover (63.1% and 64.3% of plot coverages during the second and third years, respectively), and producing ornamental biomass (4316.8 g m−2). The highest total dry amount of harvested weeds was shown by AB + CD + EF (1114.6 g m−2), demonstrating that combinations with a higher number of species were less efficient in avoiding weeds. The research allowed us to identify the best combinations to always keep the soil covered and to improve the ornamental and environmental values of urban green spaces under low-maintenance regimes. The transition from annual to perennial growth habits can contribute to increased sustainability and diversification of staple cropping systems like those based on annual wheat. Amphiploids between Triticum aestivum and Thinopyrum spp. can present a wheat-like morphology and post sexual cycle regrowth. The complex and unpredictable nature of the chromosomal rearrangements typical of inter-generic hybrids can hamper progress in the development of this new crop. By using fluorescence in situ hybridization, we described the genomic constitution of three perennial wheat breeding lines that regrew and completed a second year of production in field conditions in Washington state (USA). Two breeding lines presented stable, 56-chromosome partial amphiploids; however, their chromosome composition differed significantly. The third breeding line presented an unstable karyotype with a chromosome number ranging from 53 to 58 across eight individuals. The agronomic performance of the perennial breeding lines was evaluated for two growing seasons from 2020 to 2022. The grain yields of the perennial lines were lower than the grain production of the annual wheat control line in the first season. The perennial lines displayed vigorous regrowth after the initial harvest; however, worsening environmental conditions in the second season of growth hampered subsequent growth and grain yield. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a commonly grown pasture species in temperate agriculture, mainly serving as a primary energy source for dairy cows. However, its limited persistence often leads to missed production potential and early resowing, especially in countries that experience summer drought, e.g., Australia and New Zealand. Therefore, understanding the factors influencing perennial ryegrass pasture persistence is crucial for sustainable land management and climate resilience in pasture-based animal production systems. Significant gaps in knowledge exist regarding the factors influencing pasture persistence, as the number of conducted studies in this area remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the expression of persistence in perennial ryegrass populations using airborne and ground-based sensors. A field experiment was conducted in the southwest region of Victoria, Australia, involving ten commercial perennial ryegrass cultivar–endophyte combinations in two different populations. Persistence was evaluated using sensor-based and conventional pasture measurements over two consecutive autumns. The results revealed significant fixed effects of cultivar, endophyte, and environment and their interactions on persistence traits of perennial ryegrass. Cultivars Alto, Samson, and One50 exhibited high levels of persistence when infected with novel endophyte strains. Furthermore, prolonged environmental stresses were found to drive directional selection within pasture populations. The findings emphasise the importance of selecting appropriate cultivar–endophyte combinations and early detection of signs of poor persistence to optimise sward longevity and financial returns from pasture-based animal production systems. Perennial grasses are potentially abundant sources of biomass for biorefineries, which can produce high yields with low input requirements, and many added environmental benefits. However, perennial grasses are highly recalcitrant to biodegradation and may require pretreatment before undergoing many biorefining pathways. Microbial pretreatment uses the ability of microorganisms or their enzymes to deconstruct plant biomass and enhance its biodegradability. This process can enhance the enzymatic digestibility of perennial grasses, enabling saccharification with cellulolytic enzymes to produce fermentable sugars and derived fermentation products. Similarly, microbial pretreatment can increase the methanation rate when the grasses are used to produce biogas through anaerobic digestion. Microorganisms can also increase the digestibility of the grasses to improve their quality as animal feed, enhance the properties of grass pellets, and improve biomass thermochemical conversion. Metabolites produced by fungi or bacteria during microbial pretreatment, such as ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzymes, can be further recovered as added-value products. Additionally, the action of the microorganisms can release chemicals with commercialization potential, such as hydroxycinnamic acids and oligosaccharides, from the grasses. This review explores the recent advances and remaining challenges in using microbial pretreatment for perennial grasses with the goal of obtaining added-value products through biorefining. It emphasizes recent trends in microbial pretreatment such as the use of microorganisms as part of microbial consortia or in unsterilized systems, the use and development of microorganisms and consortia capable of performing more than one biorefining step, and the use of cell-free systems based on microbial enzymes. Background: Genomic selection has the potential to accelerate genetic gain in perennial ryegrass breeding, provided complex traits such as forage yield can be predicted with sufficient accuracy. Methods: In this study, we compared modelling approaches and feature selection strategies to evaluate the accuracy of genomic prediction models for seasonal forage yield production. Results: Overall, model selection had limited impact on predictive ability when using the full data set. For a baseline genomic best linear unbiased prediction model, the highest mean predictive accuracy was obtained for spring grazing (0.78), summer grazing (0.62) and second cut silage (0.56). In terms of feature selection strategies, using uncorrelated single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) had no impact on predictive ability, allowing for a potential decrease of the data set dimensions. With a genome‐wide association study, we found a significant SNP marker for spring grazing, located in the genic region annotated as coding for an enzyme responsible for fucosylation of xyloglucans—major components of the plant cell wall. We also presented an approach to increase interpretability of genomic prediction models with the use of Gene Ontology enrichment analysis. Conclusions: Approaches for feature selection will be relevant in development of low‐cost genotyping platforms in support of routine and cost‐effective implementation of genomic selection. Crayfish perform important roles within freshwater ecosystems, including in regions where global warming is causing prolonged drying of waterbodies. However, little is known about responses of crayfish to habitat drying from both a behavioural and physiological perspective. We compared burrowing ability, survival and metabolism of the crayfish Cherax quinquecarinatus from a seasonal stream and a perennial stream. Burrowing ability and crayfish survival were quantified in a mesocosm experiment contrasting sediment type (sand vs. clay/sand mixture) and water regime. Aerobic scope, standard metabolic rate (SMR) and maximum metabolic rate (MMR) were also compared using intermittent flow respirometry. Crayfish from the seasonal stream showed limited burrowing ability but higher survival in the drying treatment, while the perennial stream crayfish burrowed strongly in the clay/sand sediment. Higher survival suggests that crayfish from seasonal streams might be physiologically better adapted to drying. Larger crayfish burrowed more proficiently, reaching the saturated hyporheic zone refuge in the clay/sand sediment treatment. SMR/MMR/aerobic scope did not differ between populations or respirometry runs; however, SMR differed between individuals, perhaps due to personality traits. There was a significant negative relationship between MMR/aerobic scope and weight. Sediment type may limit C. quinquecarinatus burrowing and persistence through drying. Crayfish populations did not differ in terms of metabolism; however, crayfish from seasonal habitats may possess more efficient physiological adaptations to drying. Perennial crops may sequester greater soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) than annual crops due to higher root biomass production, but the potential of long‐term cultivation of perennial bioenergy crops receiving various N fertilization rates in sequestering C and N needs further exploration. Soil samples (0–120 cm) collected from 2009 to 2019 under perennial bioenergy crops receiving various N fertilization rates and an annual crop were analyzed for soil total C (STC) and N (STN) in the US northern Great Plains. Perennial bioenergy crops were intermediate wheatgrass (IW, Thinopyrum intermedium [Host] Barkworth and Dewey), smooth bromegrass (SB, Bromus inermis L.), and switchgrass (SG, Panicum virgatum L.); N fertilization rates were 0, 28, 56, and 84 kg N ha−1, and annual crop was spring wheat (WH, Triticum aestivum, L.). The STC increased, but STN decreased by soil depth, regardless of treatments and years. At 0–120 cm, IW sequestered C at 10.6 Mg C ha−1 year−1 compared with 5.4–6.8 Mg C ha−1 year−1 for SB and SG from 2009 to 2019. Nitrogen fertilization rate had limited effect on STC and STN. At 0–30 cm, STC was 2.0–5.4 Mg C ha−1 greater and STN 0.10–0.24 Mg N ha−1 greater with perennial bioenergy crops than WH. Long‐term cultivation of IW can sequester more C in the soil to a greater depth than SB and SG and perennial bioenergy crops can sequester more C and N at the surface layer than an annual crop in the semiarid region of the US northern Great Plains. The aim of the study was to compare sulfate fertilizers and mixtures of elemental sulfur (S0) and sulfate in terms of yield and nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) status in perennial ryegrass. Mixtures of sulfate and S0 can reduce the consumption of sulfate alone. The plants were grown in soil cultures. The plants were supplemented with S0, K2SO4, MgSO4, and (NH4)SO4 or a mixture of these salts with So. Two sulfur doses were applied and the ryegrass was harvested three times. Fresh and dry weights of each swath, the N and S content, and their uptake were determined. The total fresh yield of sulfur-fertilized plants was 25 to 94% higher compared to unfertilized plants. The increases in dry matter were even more significant. Fertilizers, being a mixture of S0 and sulfate, showed the same efficiency as those containing sulfate alone. Sulfur fertilization resulted in a higher S content and its uptake, lowered N concentration in second and third swatch, and a decrease in total N uptake. In conclusion, to achieve high crop yields, soil sulfur deficiency should be corrected and fertilizers that are the mixture of elemental sulfur and sulfate are a beneficial and effective approach. Worldwide, the ornamental plant industry is estimated to be valued at $70 billion, with the United States’ ornamental plant industry valued at $4.8 billion in 2020. Ornamental plants are cultivated for numerous reasons worldwide, such as decorative, medicinal, social, and utility purposes, making the ornamental field a high growth industry. One of the main pathogen groups affecting the yield and growth of the ornamental plant industry is plant-parasitic nematodes, which are microscopic roundworms that feed on plant parts causing significant yield loss. There are many kinds of plant-parasitic nematodes that affect ornamental plants, with the main genera being Meloidogyne spp., Aphelenchoides spp., Paratylenchus spp., Pratylenchus spp., Helicotylenchus spp., Radopholus spp., Xiphinema spp., Trichodorus spp., Paratrichodorus spp., Rotylenchulus spp., and Longidorus spp. The aim of this review is to focus on the effects, hosts, and symptoms of these major plant-parasitic nematodes on ornamental plants and synthesize current management strategies in the ornamental plant industry.

This article shares survey results provided by both consumers and growers regarding the University of Florida Biodiversity Certified Plants for the Rapidly Expanding Urban Landscape Market project conducted at the University of Florida (UF). The overall goal of this project was to develop and test a scientifically based, UF-trademarked process for the certification of high-quality, commercially available, wildlife-friendly plants for the green industry. The objectives of two surveys that targeted consumers and growers, respectively, were to assess consumer and grower attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors pertaining to wildlife-friendly plants and a proposed certification. The consumer survey results (n = 868) indicated that respondents (consumers) strongly agreed with purchasing wildlife-friendly plants, and that respondents would benefit from the proposed certification. The certification could help consumers gain a better understanding of which plants are wildlife-friendly at the point of purchase. Nearly half of consumers reported an inability to identify wildlife-friendly plants in the store, which hinders them from purchasing. The grower survey results (n = 75) indicated that respondents were willing to offer biodiversity-certified plants. More growers rated themselves as innovators (the most innovative category) in terms of adopting innovations than any other diffusion of innovations category (early adopter, early majority, later majority, hesitant, or none of these), although the perceived cost of obtaining the certification was seen as a potential barrier toward grower adoption of the certification. These findings indicate that the proposed certification would be successful with appropriate and tailored marketing materials for both growers and consumers.

Introduction: Clonal integration of connected ramets within clones is an important ecological advantage. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the effects of clonal integration on performance of donor and recipient ramets when one resource is heterogeneous can be influenced by the availability of another resource of donor ramets. Methods: We conducted a greenhouse experiment on the widespread, perennial herb Glechoma longituba. Clonal fragments consisting of pairs of connected ramets were grown for seven weeks. The younger, apical ramets were exposed under 30% or 100% light condition and the older, basal ramets were treated with three levels of nutrients. The connections between ramets were either severed or left intact. 30% light condition negatively affected the growth of apical ramets, basal ramets and the whole fragments. Results: Clonal integration significantly increased the growth of apical ramets, but decreased the growth of the basal ramets. Medium and high level nutrient availability of basal ramets significantly increased the growth of apical ramets, basal ramets and the whole fragments. At the high nutrient level, the reduction in growth of basal ramets from clonal integration was decreased, but the growth responses of apical ramets and the whole fragments to clonal integration were not influenced by nutrient availability. Conclusion: The results suggested that clonal integration was benefit to the growth of apical ramets of Glechoma longituba but at the cost of reducing the growth of basal ramets. Although the high nutrient level could reduce the cost that clonal integration brought to the unshaded basal ramets, but could not increase the benefit that clonal integration brought to the shaded apical ramets and whole fragment. Background: Desert steppe, as an ecotone between desert and grassland, has few species and is sensitive to climate change. Climate change alters species diversity and the stability of functional groups, which may positively or negatively affect community stability. However, the response of plant community stability in the desert steppe to experimental warming and increasing precipitation remains largely unexplored. Methods: In a factorial experiment of warming and increasing precipitation for five to seven years (ambient precipitation (P0), ambient precipitation increased by 25% and 50% (P1 and P2), ambient temperature (W0), ambient temperature increased by 2°C and 4°C (W1 and W2)), we estimated the importance value (IV) of four functional groups (perennial grasses, semi-shrubs, perennial forbs and annual herbs), species diversity and community stability. Results: Compared to W0P0, the IV of perennial grasses was reduced by 37.66% in W2P2, whereas the IV of perennial forbs increased by 48.96%. Although increasing precipitation and experimental warming significantly altered species composition, the effect on species diversity was insignificant (P > 0.05). In addition, increasing precipitation and experimental warming had a significant negative impact on community stability. The stability of perennial grasses significantly explained community stability. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the small number of species in desert steppe limits the contribution of species diversity to regulating community stability. Simple Summary: There are various factors linked to global change that possess the capacity to alter the interannual variability in seed production. Our current knowledge regarding the impact of nitrogen availability on the year-to-year fluctuations in seed production patterns of perennial plants is limited. A multiyear field experiment was undertaken to examine the impact of nitrogen addition on the interannual seed production patterns of perennial plants. The introduction of element N had a significant impact on the preservation of aboveground biomass in plants, as well as the stability of flower traits. Consequently, this factor had an impact on the frequency of pollinator preference and the annual seed output. The findings of our study indicate that increasing the nitrogen content in the soil has the potential to alter the natural fluctuations in seed production that occur over different years. The results of this study possess the capacity to improve our understanding of the effects of nitrogen supplementation on the reproductive success of perennial herbaceous plants, as well as the fundamental mechanisms driving biodiversity in the face of worldwide environmental shifts. The variability observed in the annual seed production of perennial plants can be seen as an indication of changes in the allocation of resources between growth and reproduction, which can be attributed to fluctuations in the environment. However, a significant knowledge gap exists concerning the impacts of nitrogen addition on the interannual seed production patterns of perennial plants. We hypothesized that the addition of nitrogen would impact the annual variations in the seed production of perennial plants, ultimately affecting their overall reproductive efficiency. A multiyear field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of varying nitrogen supply levels (e.g., 0, 4, and 8 kg N ha−1 yr−1 of N0, N4, and N8) on vegetative and floral traits, pollinator visitation rates, and seed traits over a period of four consecutive years. The results showed that the N0 treatment exhibited the highest levels of seed production and reproductive efficiency within the initial two years. In contrast, the N4 treatment displayed its highest level of performance in these metrics in the second and third years, whereas the N8 treatment showcased its most favorable outcomes in the third and fourth years. Similar patterns were found in the number of flowers per capitulum and the number of capitula per plant. There exists a positive correlation between aboveground biomass and several factors, including the number of flowers per capitulum, the number of capitula per plant, the volume of nectar per capitulum, and the seed production per plant. A positive correlation was found between pollinator visitation and the number of flowers per capitulum or the number of capitula per plant. This implies that the addition of N affected the maintenance of plant aboveground biomass, flower trait stability, pollinator visitation, and, subsequently, the frequency of seed production and reproductive efficiency. Our results suggest that augmenting the nitrogen content in the soil may have the capacity to modify the inherent variability in seed production that is observed across various years and enhance the effectiveness of reproductive processes. These findings have the potential to enhance our comprehension of the impact of nitrogen addition on the reproductive performance of perennial herbaceous plants and the underlying mechanisms of biodiversity in the context of global environmental changes. Perennial ryegrass is an important turf and forage grass in temperate regions worldwide. Limited genetic gains have been made with current breeding strategies compared with other grass crops, such as rice and maize, which benefit from Filial 1 (F1) hybrid breeding. One of the largest constraints on hybrid breeding in ryegrass is self‐incompatibility preventing inbreeding, as homozygous parental lines are required to develop hybrids with maximal hybrid vigour. Obligate outcrossing in ryegrass has resulted in cultivars with high levels of heterozygosity, lacking trait uniformity across the population. A naturally occurring self‐fertile (SF) locus that overcomes the self‐incompatibility system has been identified in a European perennial ryegrass population. This study crossed the SF locus into an elite cultivar, producing a self‐compatible population that was inbred for several generations. Genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) was used to assess the population structure and degree of inbreeding in the self‐compatible population. Phenotypic analysis indicated that increased homozygosity did not necessarily affect growth and performance. This study concludes that self‐compatible ryegrass is a promising tool for hybrid breeding and agronomic improvement of perennial ryegrass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many pollinator insects, especially honey bees [Apis mellifera Linnaeus (Apidae)] and wild bees, are experiencing population decline because of forage and habitat losses. Planting perennial flowering taxa is one method of increasing pollinator habitat. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the potential of 27 native species and ornamental perennial cultivars to determine their ability to attract insect pollinators in a rural and an urban landscape in North Dakota, assess the potential of these perennials to attract other beneficial insects and insect pests, and identify the bee species visiting these perennials. Five to eight native species and/or ornamental cultivars each from four genera, Monarda L. (bee balm), Hylotelephium H. Ohba (stonecrop), Baptisia Vent. (wild indigo), and Symphyotrichum Nees (aster), were tested. Weekly observations of individual plants during flowering and their pollinator visitations from 2018 to 2020 indicated that insect pollinators were present for the earliest flowering perennials in June and until the latest flowering perennials during the second week of October or the first freeze. A total of 16,194 insect pollinators were observed, and 87.8% of these pollinator visitations were Hymenoptera and Diptera. Significant landscapes × perennial flowering taxa interactions were detected for all insect groups, except for syrphid flies, for which both main effects were significantly different. Overall, honey bees and beetles preferred to visit Hylotelephium and Symphyotrichum. The wild bees, lepidopterans, and syrphids preferred Hylotelephium, Symphyotrichum, and Monarda. Tachinids preferred Symphyotrichum. Blow flies preferred Hylotelephium. More beneficial insect visitations (i.e., 96.0%) and fewer insect pest visitations (i.e., 30.4%) were counted on the rural landscape. A total of 3311 bee individuals were identified as species from the following families: Apidae, Andrenidae, Colletidae, Megachilidae, and Halictidae. Thirty-one and 21 bee species were unique to the rural and urban landscapes, respectively. The two most common wild bees were Ceratina calcarata Robertson on the cultivar S. oblongifolium (Nutt.) G.L. Nessom October Skies and Lasioglossum imitatum (Smith) on some Monarda and Hylotelephium. These findings suggest that pollinator visitations are influenced by the landscape and varied among the perennial flowering taxa in some cases. However, all evaluated perennial flower taxa would be suitable for attracting and supporting pollinators in rural or urban landscape settings in the northern Great Plains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The occurrence of within-population variation in germination behavior and associated traits such as seed size has long fascinated evolutionary ecologists. In annuals, unpredictable environments are known to select for bet-hedging strategies causing variation in dormancy duration and germination strategies. Variation in germination timing and associated traits is also commonly observed in perennials and often tracks gradients of environmental predictability. Although bet-hedging is thought to occur less frequently in long-lived organisms, these observations suggest a role of bet-hedging strategies in perennials occupying unpredictable environments. We use complementary analytical and evolutionary simulation models of within-individual variation in germination behavior in seasonal environments to show how bet-hedging interacts with fluctuating selection, life-history traits, and competitive asymmetries among germination strategies. We reveal substantial scope for bet-hedging to produce variation in germination behavior in long-lived plants, when "false starts" to the growing season results in either competitive advantages or increased mortality risk for alternative germination strategies. Additionally, we find that lowering adult survival may, in contrast to classic bet-hedging theory, result in less spreading of germination by decreasing density-dependent competition. These models extend insights from bet-hedging theory to perennials and explore how competitive communities may be affected by ongoing changes in climate and seasonality patterns. This study was designed to understand how drought stress impact on the physiological and molecular status of genetically diverse Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) populations. The sensitivities of the 36 perennial ryegrass populations were checked against PEG-6000-simulated drought stress by analysing physiological status. Afterward, drought-related gene expressions were evaluated under normal and stressed conditions. The drought stress significantly up-regulated the drought-related genes in P6, P10, P15 and P30, while no difference was observed in drought-sensitive ones. The results collectively showed that four populations (P6, P10, P15, P30) are tolerant to drought stress and activate drought-related genes. Genetic similarities of the populations were also monitored using microsatellite (SSR) markers. The ten SSR primers detected 38 alleles. Surprisingly, the drought-tolerant populations were classified into different groups by principal component (PCA) and cluster analysis, showing that they are genetically different. Moreover, four unique alleles were identified by two SSR primers (P-07, and P-08) in P6, P10 and P15. In addition, the drought-tolerant populations (P6, P10, P15, P30) can be used to develop new perennial ryegrass cultivars for areas having drought problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nutritive value of some Algerian perennial plants species were examined on the premise of their in vitro gas production, chemical composition and fermentation kinetics. The plant species were Aristida pungens, Artemesia herbaalba, Artemesia vulgarus, Atriplex halimus, Genista saharae, Lygeum spartum, Retama retam, Stipa tenacissima. L and oat hay as a standard. Importants variation have been registered (P <0.05) regarding all the chemical components of the perennial plants species. The crude protein (CP) content value ranged between 5.02 and 16.15 (% DM), the highest CP value was recorded for Atriplex halimus (A. halimus). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were generally high in Stipa tenacissima and low in Atriplex halimus (P <0.05). The organic matter digestibility (OMD) and the total gas production vary from 31.74 to 59.1 % and 15.46 to 39.52 (ml.g-1 DM), respectively. In general, high values of Organic matter digestibility (OMD) and gas production were noted for A. halimus succeeded by Genista saharae (G. saharae). This necessitates prudent nutritional interventions such as supplementation with barley and wheat bran. Additionally, in order to improve fibrous feeds digestibility, some exogenous fibrolytic enzymes are of growing interest as additives to ruminant nutrition. A. halimus is a valuable plant that provides wildlife habitat and food for livestock. It is a very effective fodder element in mixed diets and as a supplement for livestock, mainly during the dry season in arid and semi-arid regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comprehensive study from the surface soil samples of 14 locations from Amghara, Kuwait were assessed for the investigation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). There is limited information regarding the distribution pattern of OCPs in the soil samples of Kuwait. The total concentration of OCPs was in the range of 209.39 pg/g -7449.18 pg/g with an average value of 1313.04 pg/g. DDT had higher concentrations in soil samples (969.52 pg/g) than the other pesticides, according to the findings. The distribution pattern of OCPs in the Amghara soils revealed their origin as both historical and recent applications of pesticides. The study extended, how residual quantities could be used to determine health risks of both children and adults. Background and aims Perennial plants in seasonal climates need to optimize their carbon balance by adjusting their active season length to avoid risks of tissue loss under adverse conditions. As season length is determined by two processes, namely spring growth and senescence, it is likely to vary in response to several potentially contrasting selective forces. Here we aim to disentangle the cascade of ecological determinants of interspecific differences in season length. Methods We measured size trajectories in 231 species in a botanical garden. We examined correlations between their spring and autumn size changes and determined how they make up season length. We used structural equation models (SEMs) to determine how niche parameters and species traits combine in their effect on species-specific season length. Key results Interspecific differences in season length were mainly controlled by senescence, while spring growth was highly synchronized across species. SEMs showed that niche parameters (light and moisture) had stronger, and often trait-independent, effects compared to species traits. Several niche (light) and trait variables (plant height, clonal spreading) had opposing effects on spring growth and senescence. Conclusions The findings indicate different drivers and potential risks in growth and senescence. The strong role of niche-based predictors implies that shifts in season length due to global change are likely to differ among habitats and will not be uniform across the whole flora. The experiment was to study the nutritional quality and production performance of alfalfa with different autumn dormancy grades in Shihezi area, to obtain excellent dormancy alfalfa varieties suitable for local planting. Ten alfalfa varieties with different autumn dormancy levels were selected as experimental materials. The nutritional quality, production index and overwintering rate of alfalfa in early flowering period were determined and evaluated comprehensively. The results showed that the first group of non-autumn dormancy and extreme non-autumn dormancy alfalfa, represented by Yumu No. 1, had excellent production performance and nutritional quality, but poor wintering ability. Semi-autumn dormancy alfalfa (Xinjiang Daye, Victoria and Archer) had strong wintering ability and good comprehensive performance. Autumn dormancy alfalfa (Zhaodong, Xinmu No. 2 and Qishi No. 2) had strong wintering ability, but its comprehensive performance was poor. The study indicates that considering the local climate and perennial characteristics of alfalfa, semi-autumn dormancy alfalfa (Xinjiang Daye, Victoria and Archer) with good comprehensive performance and strong wintering ability should be optimized. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the quality of green mass, hay and silage prepared from perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne and tall fescue Festuca arundinacea, grown in monoculture in the experimental plot of the "Alexandru Ciubotaru" National Botanical Garden (Institute), Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. It was established that the concentration of nutrients and energy in whole-plant dry matter of studied grass species, harvested in pre-flowering stage was 10.74-14.10% CP, 3.10-3.58 % EE, 29.95-31.66% CF, 36.35-45.76% NFE, 6.20-19.24 % sugar, 1.54-2.99 % starch, 10.45-14.31% ash, 2.9 g/kg Ca, 2.5-2.7 g/kg P, 8.93-9.49 MJ/kg ME and 4.97-5.06 MJ/kg NEl. The biochemical composition of the prepared silages was: pH= 4.06-4.21, 27.9-28.9 g/kg lactic acid, 0-0.4 g/kg butyric acid, 1.5-5.0 g/kg acetic acid, 9.12-9.67% CP, 3.37-3.99% EE, 39.16-41.30% CF, 30.53-37.37% NFE, 0.33-1.40 % sugar, 0.50-0.60 % starch, 10.98-14.51% ash, 36.34-56.33 mg/kg carotene, 8.31-9.53MJ/kg ME and 4.48-5.34 MJ/kg NEl. The great advances in genetic engineering, especially what is known as "Directed evolution" and "Gene drive" offer humankind the possibility of minimizing or eradicating diseases, improving ecosystems, and producing improved organisms in a simple, affordable, and effective way. However, the use of these technologies, as in any intervention in the teleological order of reality, represents physical-chemical and biological risks, but, above all, ethical implications that are important to consider. This work is aimed at offering some philosophical foundations of perennial value, which can help in an assessment of the use of the technologies used for a directed evolution, resorting to the philosophical synthesis of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Heat stress can hinder the growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) applied exogenously can increase heat stress tolerance in plants; however, the regulatory mechanisms involved in heat tolerance mediated by MeJA are poorly understood in perennial ryegrass. Here, the microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles of perennial ryegrass were assessed to elucidate the regulatory pathways associated with heat tolerance induced by MeJA. Plants were subjected to four treatments, namely, control (CK), MeJA pre-treatment (T), heat stress treatment (H), and MeJA pre-treatment + heat stress (TH). According to the results, 102 miRNAs were up-regulated in all treatments, with 20, 27, and 33 miRNAs being up-regulated in the T, H, and TH treatment groups, respectively. The co-expression network analysis between the deferentially expressed miRNAs and their corresponding target genes showed that 20 miRNAs modulated 51 potential target genes. Notably, the miRNAs that targeted genes related to with regards to heat tolerance were driven by MeJA, and they were involved in four pathways: novel-m0258-5p mediated signal transduction, novel-m0350-5p mediated protein homeostasis, miR397-z, miR5658-z, and novel-m0008-5p involved in cell wall component, and miR1144-z and miR5185-z dominated chlorophyll degradation. Overall, the findings of this research paved the way for more research into the heat tolerance mechanism in perennial ryegrass and provided a theoretical foundation for developing cultivars with enhanced heat tolerance. Background and Aims Plants have evolved an unrivalled diversity of reproductive strategies, including variation in the degree of sexual vs. clonal reproduction. This variation has important effects on the dynamics and genetic structure of populations. We examined the association between large-scale variation in reproductive patterns and intraspecific genetic diversity in two moss species where sex is manifested in the dominant haploid generation and sex expression is irregular. We predicted that in regions with more frequent realized sexual reproduction, populations should display less skewed sex ratios, should more often express sex and should have higher genetic diversity than in regions with largely clonal reproduction. Methods We assessed reproductive status and phenotypic sex in the dioicous long-lived Drepanocladus trifarius and D. turgescens , in 248 and 438 samples across two regions in Scandinavia with frequent or rare realized sexual reproduction, respectively. In subsets of the samples, we analysed genetic diversity using nuclear and plastid sequence information and identified sex with a sex-specific molecular marker in non-reproductive samples. Key Results Contrary to our predictions, sex ratios did not differ between regions; genetic diversity did not differ in D. trifarius and it was higher in the region with rare sexual reproduction in D. turgescens. Supporting our predictions, relatively more samples expressed sex in D. trifarius in the region with frequent sexual reproduction. Overall, samples were mostly female. The degree of sex expression and genetic diversity differed between sexes. Conclusions Sex expression levels, regional sex ratios and genetic diversity were not directly associated with the regional frequency of realized sexual reproduction, and relationships and variation patterns differed between species. We conclude that a combination of species-specific life histories, such as longevity, overall degree of successful sexual reproduction and recruitment, and historical factors are important to explain this variation. Background: Allergic rhinitis is the most common allergic disease, with a prevalence up to 40% in the general population. Allergic rhinitis requires daily treatment to block inflammatory mediators and suppress the inflammatory response. However, these medications may have harmful side effects. Photobiomodulation as a treatment modality to reduce inflammation has been beneficial in many chronic disorders, yet therapy has not been US Food and Drug Administration approved for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. The LumiMed Nasal Device was designed to address the limitations associated with the treatment of allergic rhinitis with photobiomodulation. This in-office study hopes to show efficacy, usability, and comfortability of the LumiMed Nasal Device. Case presentation: Twenty patients with allergic rhinitis were treated during high allergy season with LumiMed Nasal Device. The average age of patients was 35 years (10–75); 11 were female and 9 were male. The population's ethnicities were white (n = 11), Black (n = 6), Oriental (n = 2), and Iranian (n = 1). Patients were treated with twice-daily dosing, 10 seconds in each nostril, for 10 consecutive days. After 10 days, patients were evaluated for symptom relief, device comfort and device ease of use. The Total Nasal Symptom Score was used to assess severity of main symptoms of allergic rhinitis. The sum of Total Nasal Symptom Scores for each symptom category was calculated (total possible scores per patient were 0–9). Rhinorrhea/nasal secretions, nasal congestion, and nasal itching/sneezing were evaluated on a scale of 0–3 (0 no symptoms, 1 mild symptoms, 2 moderate symptoms, 3 severe symptoms). Device comfort was evaluated on a scale of 0–3 (0 no discomfort, 1 mild discomfort, 2 moderate discomfort, 3 severe discomfort). Device ease of use was evaluated on a scale of 0–3 (0 very easy, 1 somewhat difficult, 2 difficult, 3 very difficult). Conclusions: The results from these case studies indicated that of the 20 patients in this case study, 100% of patients experienced improvement in overall Total Nasal Symptom Score after using LumiMed Nasal Device. Of those patients, 40% brought their Total Nasal Symptom Score down to 0. In the field of precision agriculture, weed detection models combined with selective spraying by ground or aerial robotics are seen as promising approaches for increasing yield harvests while simultaneously minimizing herbicide use. The available labeled training data are a major bottleneck for developing and applying supervised deep learning models, and more automated methods for labeled data generation are therefore needed. Our research aims to address this need by introducing a rule-based method for label data generation for perennial weeds. For this research, a dataset of a barley field was collected using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a flight altitude of 10 m. A multispectral and a thermal camera were used for the data collection. The preprocessed dataset consists of multispectral and thermal orthomosaic images along with a canopy height model. The methodological part of this article introduces a proposed rule-based method for labeled data generation for perennial weeds based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and this approach is further used to generate labels for the measured data. The preprocessed data combined with the generated labels was used to train U-net models. Three data combinations are used for the training and testing: multispectral, multispectral–thermal and multispectral–thermal–canopy–height–model. This approach was used to evaluate whether additional data improve model performance. To evaluate the models on ground truth labels, they are tested on a manually annotated test dataset, which consists of 10% of the whole dataset. The tested models achieved an F1 score of 0.82–0.83 on the test dataset. This finding demonstrates that the rule-based labeling method generates valid labels for the perennial weed detection task. Furthermore, our study shows that data fusion improved the model slightly. Three perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) populations (R1, R2, and R3) with suspected resistance (R) to acetolactate synthase (ALS) or acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) herbicides were collected from wheat (Triticum aestivum) fields in northwestern Greece to study the underlying mechanisms of resistance and their impact on growth rate and competitive ability against wheat. Preemergence and postemergence plant dose–response assays showed that the R1 population was cross-resistant to the ALS inhibitors chlorsulfuron, mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron, and pyroxsulam, but susceptible (S) to imazamox. However, all populations were susceptible to the ACCase inhibitors clodinafop-propargyl, clethodim, diclofop-methyl, and pinoxaden. The analysis of the ALS gene sequence revealed a substitution of Pro197 by His or Leu in the ALS enzyme in L. perenne, which is reported for the first time in this weed and indicates a potential mechanism of target site-mediated resistance. The R1 population grown in the absence or presence of wheat competition displayed similar aboveground biomass and tiller number trends, and therefore similar estimated growth rates. In addition, the aboveground biomass of wheat was similarly reduced by both the R1 and S populations, supporting the evidence of their similar competitive ability against wheat. The creeping perennial weed species Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. occurs in patches. Expanding creeping roots allow these patches to increase their covered area. This characteristic has rarely been addressed when investigating the effects of control options in arable fields. We designed a three-year field experiment (2019–2021) in north-eastern Germany, accounting for existing patch patterns. The experimental setup included an untreated control, a competition treatment (cover crop, CC), two disturbance treatments by mouldboard ploughing (PL), root cutting (RC), and four combined applications (RC + CC, PL + CC, PL + RC, PL + RC + CC). Root cutting was performed by a prototype tillage machine produced by "Kverneland". Plots were defined by the species growth pattern and mapped by GPS and UAV. The experiment investigates the thistle response variables: "Expansion", "Density", "Coverage", and "Height". Treatments including disturbance by ploughing (PL, PL + CC, PL + RC, PL + RC + CC) reduced "Density" by the factor 0.15 and "Expansion" by 0.25, while those without ploughing (CC, RC, RC + CC) only reduced "Density" by the factor 0.68 and "Expansion" by 0.71. Adding root cuttings or cover crops did not further increase the reduction effect of ploughing. Treatments with competition by cover crops impacted "Expansion" more clearly than "Density". When cover crops were combined with root cutting (RC + CC), "Expansion" was almost additively reduced, resulting in a reduction comparable to that of ploughing. The "Height" of the shoots was significantly reduced in four treatments (PL, RC + CC, PL + RC, PL + RC + CC), while "Coverage" did not change significantly. UAV patch monitoring proved to be accurate enough for thistle "Expansion" but not for thistle "Density" within the patch. It is difficult to assess the relative variability or stability of chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL) reproduction in perennial herbs with mixed mating because long-term data in natural populations are unavailable. Here, the aim was to quantify and compare spatial (between-habitat) and temporal (among-year) variation in CH and CL reproduction over 5 years in two subpopulations of the native perennial grass Danthonia compressa. This species produces CH spikelets on terminal panicles in early summer, while axillary CL spikelets, including a basal cleistogene, mature into the autumn. Flowering tillers were collected from a sunny woodland edge and an adjacent shady interior habitat for 5 consecutive years (2017–21). Seed set, fecundity, seed mass and biomass allocation were recorded for the two floral types along with tiller vegetative mass. Bivariate line fitting was used for allometric analysis of CH and CL fecundity. Seed set, fecundity, mass per seed and allocation to seeds differed between floral types and showed significant variation between habitats and among years. Seed set and fecundity in CH panicles were greater than that of axillary CL panicles in most years. Tiller mass positively affected axillary CL seed production and mass of the basal cleistogene. Fecundity and allocation among years were more variable for CH compared to CL reproduction. High seed set and fecundity of CH spikelets suggest that pollination does not limit reproduction via chasmogamy. Late maturation of axillary CL spikelets provides additional fecundity, especially in larger plants along sunny woodland edges. The heavy cleistogene at the tiller base could be important to population persistence, analogous to the axillary bud bank of other perennial grasses that are not cleistogamous. The experiment was conducted at the Research Institute of Mountain Stockbreeding and Agriculture, Troyan (Bulgaria) with the aim of establishing the impact of the fertilizers Nano Sulfur and Panamin Agro on the height, productivity and composition of sown grass stand from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The perennial ryegrass plants have proven to form the highest grass stand with the application of Panamin Agro biofertilizer (250 g/da). The harvested biomass registered 4.05 cm (at P <0.05) higher values of the trait compared to the control (67.18 cm). The highest average yield of fresh matter was registered in the grass stand of Lolium perenne L. treated with Panamin Agro - 250 g/da. The values of the trait significantly exceeded the unfertilized control by 16.87% (P <0.05). No significant difference was proven in the amount of dry matter was found between the fertilized variants and the untreated control of perennial ryegrass. Lolium perenne L. occupied the highest relative share in the variants treated with Nano Sulfur (200 ml/da) and Panamin Agro (250 g/da). The percentage share of the grass crop was respectively 89.94% and 88.71% (in the control variant - 79.95%). The specified variants had the lowest degree of weed infestation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
