Prevention of icing flashover on transmission lines has become an important problem. A new method for mitigating effects of glaze ice on energized insulators has been developed. Semiconductive silicone rubber was painted on the bottom of suspension disc insulators, while the upper ceramic surface was untreated. An electrically conductive path was formed when supercooled water or droplets bridged the uncoated areas. The power loss was limited when there was no precipitation. The heat and partial discharge energy generated by the leakage current melted the original ice accretion on the insulator surface. The electrical performance of the insulator string with this kind of coating under freezing rain conditions was comparable with that of a clean insulator string. The impact of the ambient temperature on the anti-icing performance was also evaluated. In this work, to explore potential substitutions for the Co binder phase, ultrafine-grain WC-based cermets with various binder phases of Co, Ni and AlCoCrNiFeCu HEA were prepared using the SPS method. Based on SPS, WC-based cermets were fabricated at higher speed, showing fine carbide particles less than 410 μm. The microstructure, mechanical properties and wear properties were systematically evaluated. By comparison, the grain size of WC was the lowest for WC-10Co, while WC-10 HEA cermet held the coarsest WC particles. The hardness and fracture toughness of WC-10 HEA were the best among all three samples, with values of 93.2 HRA and 11.3 MP·m1/2. However, the bending strength of WC-10HEA was about 56.1% lower than that of WC-10Co, with a value of 1349.6 MPa. The reduction in bending strength is attributed to the lower density, formation of a newly Cr-Al rich phase and coarser WC grains. In dry sliding wear conditions, WC-10 HEA showed the lowest wear rate (0.98 × 10−6 mm3/(N·m)) and coefficient of friction (0.19), indicating the best wear resistance performance. This reveals that WC-based cermet with a HEA binder phase has superior wear performance due to the higher hardness and good self-lubricating effect of the wear products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inspired by potential application prospects of spintronics and valleytronics, a novel heterobilayer Janus structure is designed by replacing the chalcogenide atomic layers in the original bilayer MoS2. Based on first-principles calculations, it is found that the SMoS/SeMoS structure exhibits a direct band-gap semiconductor and a typical type-II band alignment with longer carrier lifetime. The transition metal (TM) atom represented by V/Cr/Mn can be stably adsorbed on the heterobilayer Janus SMoS/SeMoS sheet and effectively introduce magnetic moments (m). The calculation results demonstrate that the most stable adsorption site of the TM atom is CX(A), and the TM (V/Cr/Mn) adatom modified SMoS/SeMoS system is converted into metal (V-) or half-metal (Cr/Mn-), respectively. Under the coupling of different indirect exchange interactions, the structure exhibits stable intrinsic anti-ferromagnetic interactions for V-SMoS/SeMoS and ferromagnetic ground state for Cr/Mn-SMoS/SeMoS, respectively, and the magnetic transition temperature (T c) reaches a high temperature or even room temperature. Moreover, the robust out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy ensures stable long-range magnetic order. Specifically, the combination of spin injection and strong spin–orbit coupling interaction effectively breaks the time-reversal symmetry, which leads to valley polarization of the system. Based on this, the biaxial strain can effectively regulate the electronic structure, magnetic properties and valley polarization of TM-SMoS/SeMoS nanosheets with double breaking of spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetry. In this study, silicone rubber (SiR) with 0, 90, and 180 parts of aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3, ATH) contents prepared in the laboratory was treated in a certain concentration of NO2 for 0, 12, 24, and 36 h. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetry (TG) were used to study the changes in the surface structure and thermal stability of SiR, as well as the influence of Al(OH)3 on the properties of SiR. According to AFM, the root-mean-square roughness of ATH-90 SiR was 192 nm, which was 2.7 times of ATH-0 SiR. With the incorporation of ATH, the surface of SiR became more susceptible to corrosion by NO2. According to FT-IR and XPS, with the increase in aging time, the side chain Si-CH3 of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was oxidized gradually and a few of nitroso -NO2 groups were formed. According to TG, the incorporation of ATH caused the maximum decomposition rate temperature of PDMS to advance from 458.65 °C to 449.37 and 449.26 °C, which shows that the thermal stability of SiR degraded by adding ATH. After NO2 aging, a new decomposition stage appeared between 75 and 220 °C (stage Ⅰ), and this decomposition trend was similar to aluminum nitrate, which was proven to reduce the thermal stability of PDMS. The effects of NO2 on the surface structure and thermal stability of different ATH contents of silicone rubber were preliminarily clarified by a variety of characterization methods, which provided ideas for the development of silicone rubber resistant to NO2 aging. In this study, functional graphene oxide (f-GO) nanosheets were prepared to enhance the NO2 resistibility of room-temperature-vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber. A nitrogen dioxide (NO2) accelerated aging experiment was designed to simulate the aging process of nitrogen oxide produced by corona discharge on a silicone rubber composite coating, and then electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to test the process of conductive medium penetration into silicone rubber. After exposure to the same concentration (115 mg·L−1) of NO2 for 24 h, at an optimal filler content of 0.3 wt.%, the impedance modulus of the composite silicone rubber sample was 1.8 × 107 Ω·cm2, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of pure RTV. In addition, with an increase in filler content, the porosity of the coating decreases. When the content of the nanosheet increases to 0.3 wt.%; the porosity reaches a minimum value 0.97 × 10−4%, which is 1/4 of the porosity of the pure RTV coating, indicating that this composite silicone rubber sample has the best resistance to NO2 aging. Ordered interstitial complexes (OIC) are in the intermediate state between random interstitial solutes and chemical compounds, which can effectively improve the mechanical performance of multi-principle element alloys. Nevertheless, experimentally observing the complex atomic details of OIC formation and their interaction with dislocations remains challenging. Meanwhile, simulations of the OIC behavior faced the dilemma of lacking interatomic potentials for multi-component systems. In this work, we investigate the oxygen OICs in TiNbZr medium entropy alloys as a typical example to elucidate the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of OICs with a developed highly accurate deep learning potential. The formation mechanism, atomic packing of OICs and their interaction with dislocations, were then elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations with the developed potential. The interstitial atoms were found to aggregate energetically and increase the barrier of dislocation movement upon loading. It was found that the Nb content exerts a significant influence on the morphology and distribution of OICs. The decrease of Nb content favors the formation of larger cluster-like OICs. The existence of OICs can remarkably enhance the critical shear stress required for continuous dislocation movement. A pinning-cutting behavior was observed when an edge dislocation encounters an OIC, while a cross-slip behavior occurred when a screw dislocation encounters an OIC. The developed interatomic potential provides a valuable tool for elucidating the deformation mechanisms of TiNbZrO alloys, which highlights the significant effects of OICs on the mechanical performance of multi-principle element alloys. Based on first‐principles calculations, it is found that the Dirac cone of Bi 2 Te 3 film, which is buried in the bulk valence bands, can be tuned by the substitutional nonmagnetic atoms. It is found that substituting the Bi layer at the two ends of Bi 2 Te 3 films with group III atoms Al, Ga, In and Tl, which have lower electronegativity than Bi atoms, can lead to an isolated Dirac cone with the Dirac point shifted into the bulk band gap and located on the Fermi level. Substituting the more electronegative Se, S and O atoms for Te atoms at the top and bottom layers of Bi 2 Te 3 film, only the most electronegative O atoms give rise to a nearly ideal Dirac cone. The charge distribution of the resulting isolated Dirac point state is concentrated at the Te layers facing the van der Waals layers and vanishes in the middle of the quintuple layers. By performing first-principles calculations, we studied hexagonal-boron-nitride (hBN)-supported graphene, in which moiré structures are formed due to lattice mismatch or interlayer rotation. A series of graphene/hBN systems has been studied to reveal the evolution of properties with respect to different twisting angles (21.78°, 13.1°, 9.43°, 7.34°, 5.1°, and 3.48°). Although AA- and AB-stacked graphene/hBN are gapped at the Dirac point by about 50 meV, the energy gap of the moiré graphene/hBN, which is much more asymmetric, is only about several meV. Although the Dirac cone of graphene residing in the wide gap of hBN is not much affected, the calculated Fermi velocity is found to decrease with the increase in the moiré super lattice constant due to charge transfer. The periodic potential imposed by hBN modulated charge distributions in graphene, leading to the shift of graphene bands. In agreement with experiments, there are dips in the calculated density of states, which get closer and closer to the Fermi energy as the moiré lattice grows larger. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The macroscopic physical properties of functional ceramics are strongly affected by grain morphology, almost resulting from the sintering process. For a given ceramic material, it has been experimentally confirmed that the enhancement of dielectric breakdown strength E b can largely increase energy storage density (W). An effective method to increase E b of ceramic materials is the control of grain morphology. Herein, the (Ba 0.95 Sr 0.05)(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8)O 3 ceramics have been intensively investigated by different sintering techniques to improve grain morphology. Compared with single-step sintering, two-step sintering can sharply inhibit grain growth and make size distribution uniform, which is conducive to the increase in the E b. A competitive energy storage capacity can be achieved with a high W ch of 3.78 J/cm3, a high W di of 3.50 J/cm3, and a high η of 92.6% by two-step sintering due to large E b of 350 kV/cm, accompanied with good thermal stability till to 160 °C and good fatigue characteristics up to 105 cycles, indicating that two-step sintering is an effective strategy of engineering grain morphology. Recently, the distance‐dependent interlayer magnetism transition from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) has been predicted in many 2D FM bilayers. Effectively controlling critical distance is a key point for reversible AFM–FM transitions. Based on first‐principles calculations, it is found that the critical distance can be modulated by the charge transfer induced by elemental substitution of anionic sublayers in SCrSe‐based van der Waals (vdW) bilayer structures. The interlayer AFM–FM transition is dependent on the interlayer pz overlap, which is determined by the bonding strength (ΔEb) of the covalent‐like quasibonding (CLQB) from the coupling of interlayer pz orbitals. Large critical distance is achieved when the ΔEb is significant in the bilayers. The interlayer pz overlap is altered by inducing intralayer or interlayer charge transfer, modulating the critical distance of interlayer AFM–FM transition. • An improved evaluation model of lightning-induced thermal damage for OGW is proposed. • When ignoring phase transition, the maximum assessment deviation exceeded 190%. • Model results can be verified with experimental results in laboratory. • Model results cannot be matched with results of natural lightning strikes. In the research of lightning-induced damage mechanisms for overhead ground wire (OGW), thermal ablation damage evaluation has always been a basic work. In this paper, a numerical evaluation model of thermal damage for OGW, considering the latent heat of phase transition and mass loss caused by vaporization, is proposed. The influence of the phase transition effect on the thermal damage evaluation results was analyzed, and the damage characteristics under different lightning heat sources were also discussed. Finally, this model was compared with the published experimental data and the OGW damage sample caused by natural lightning strikes, respectively. The results showed that in the case of ignoring the latent heat of phase transition and mass loss, the maximum assessment deviations exceeded 190% and 45%, respectively. Under the continuing current, the thermal ablation damage of OGW was determined by the heat transfer of lightning arc. While under the return-stroke current, the contribution of Joule heat to thermal ablation increases as the current increases. Based on the existing Joule heat & arc heat transfer model, the damage evaluation results considering the phase transition effect were consistent with the reported experimental results. In this paper, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) were used to probe the changes of oligomers and the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) network in silicone rubber, after different durations of UVA/UVB irradiation. At the early stage (<300 h) of UVA/UVB irradiation, the concentration of D 4 -D 9 decreases. The o-Ps intensity of the extracted silicone rubber increases in the stage after UVB irradiation. These results indicate the crosslinking of oligomers into the PDMS network. After a long duration (>300 h) of UVB irradiation, D 4 was generated and the lifetime of τ 3 also increased, indicating the rupture of the Si-O bond in the PDMS network. These two aging processes were termed the post curing process and the chain session process. The new finding was that UVA could only induce the post curing process; UVB causes the rupture of the chemical bond in silicone rubber. Photons of UVB could break the C-H bond, and then trigger the backbiting decomposition of PDMS, breaking the Si-O bond, while the photons of UVA cannot. The fact that D 4 was generated after UVB irradiation can be used to evaluate the UVB stability of silicone rubber in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose An accurate detection of overhead ground wire under open surroundings with varying illumination is the premise of reliable line grasping with the off-line arm when the inspection robot cross obstacle automatically. This paper aims to propose an improved approach which is called adaptive homomorphic filter and supervised learning (AHSL) for overhead ground wire detection.Design/methodology/approach First, to decrease the influence of the varying illumination caused by the open work environment of the inspection robot, the adaptive homomorphic filter is introduced to compensation the changing illumination. Second, to represent ground wire more effectively and to extract more powerful and discriminative information for building a binary classifier, the global and local features fusion method followed by supervised learning method support vector machine is proposed.Findings Experiment results on two self-built testing data sets A and B which contain relative older ground wires and relative newer ground wire and on the field ground wires show that the use of the adaptive homomorphic filter and global and local feature fusion method can improve the detection accuracy of the ground wire effectively. The result of the proposed method lays a solid foundation for inspection robot grasping the ground wire by visual servo.Originality/value This method AHSL has achieved 80.8 per cent detection accuracy on data set A which contains relative older ground wires and 85.3 per cent detection accuracy on data set B which contains relative newer ground wires, and the field experiment shows that the robot can detect the ground wire accurately. • OGW Damage result from existing model is milder than that in natural lightning. • There is at least 45% of energy difference between model and natural lightning. • Contribution of Joule heat to the injected energy is almost negligible for OGW. Acquisition and analysis of the thermal damage and injected energy data of the natural lightning strikes are conducive to understand the lightning-induced damage mechanism of OGW (Overhead Ground Wire) as well as guide the improvement of the lightning simulation experimental methods in the laboratory. In this paper, a rupture accident of OGW in the power grid, which was taken as a natural lightning strike damage experiment, was used to compare the thermal damage and the injected energy with the existing common Joule heat & arc heat transfer model. The results indicated that the thermal damage of the common model is milder than that of natural lighting strike. In this accident, at least more than 45% of the injected natural lightning energy was not sourced when adopting the existing common model to simulate the thermal damage of OGW, even after considering the electrons enthalpy flux that is usually neglected in calculation. Extracting road information from point clouds obtained through mobile laser scanning (MLS) is essential for autonomous vehicle navigation, and has hence garnered a growing amount of research interest in recent years. However, the performance of such systems is seriously affected due to varying point density and noise. This paper proposes a novel three-dimensional (3D) local feature called the binary kernel descriptor (BKD) to extract road information from MLS point clouds. The BKD consists of Gaussian kernel density estimation and binarization components to encode the shape and intensity information of the 3D point clouds that are fed to a random forest classifier to extract curbs and markings on the road. These are then used to derive road information, such as the number of lanes, the lane width, and intersections. In experiments, the precision and recall of the proposed feature for the detection of curbs and road markings on an urban dataset and a highway dataset were as high as 90%, thus showing that the BKD is accurate and robust against varying point density and noise. Overhead ground wire (OGW) is erected to protect transmission conductors from lightning strikes. However, OGW can be damaged or even ruptured due to lightning strikes, which threatens the stable operation of the power system. Thus, it is necessary to study the lightning-induced damage or rupture mechanism to provide a theoretical guidance for the structure optimization or selection criteria improvement for OGW. In this paper, an OGW rupture accident due to lightning arc root movement under multiple return strokes was analyzed. Firstly, based on the evidence at the accident scene and the damage characteristics of the sample, it was preliminarily inferred that multiple lightning strike points caused the rupture of OGW in the accident. An analytical model simulating the lightning arc root movement was established to prove the existence of lightning arc root movement phenomenon in the accident. In addition, the thermal ablation model of OGW was also established according to the existing numerical methods. The differences between OGW damage results of model and sample were compared. The results of this paper showed that the sliding movement and jumping movement of the lightning arc root caused the long axial ablation length and multiple lightning strike points of OGW in the accident, respectively. Existing numerical methods as well as the laboratory generated lightning strikes experiments did not accurately calculate the thermal ablation damage of OGW caused by the natural lightning strikes. For this accident sample, at least 66% injected lightning energy is not considered when simulating the physical process of the natural lightning striking OGW. Based on the research result, simulation test of lightning strike should be considered before OGW is put into operation. To solve the problems such as obvious speckle noise and serious spectral distortion when existing fusion methods are applied to the fusion of optical and SAR images, this paper proposes a fusion method for optical and SAR images based on Dense-UGAN and Gram–Schmidt transformation. Firstly, dense connection with U-shaped network (Dense-UGAN) are used in GAN generator to deepen the network structure and obtain deeper source image information. Secondly, according to the particularity of SAR imaging mechanism, SGLCM loss for preserving SAR texture features and PSNR loss for reducing SAR speckle noise are introduced into the generator loss function. Meanwhile in order to keep more SAR image structure, SSIM loss is introduced to discriminator loss function to make the generated image retain more spatial features. In this way, the generated high-resolution image has both optical contour characteristics and SAR texture characteristics. Finally, the GS transformation of optical and generated image retains the necessary spectral properties. Experimental results show that the proposed method can well preserve the spectral information of optical images and texture information of SAR images, and also reduce the generation of speckle noise at the same time. Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials have been widely adopted as photocatalysts in water splitting. Based on the first-principles calculations within screened hybrid functional of Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE), we find that Janus group-III chalcogenide based vdW heterojunction (SeGa 2 Te/SeIn 2 Se) is a promising visible-light-driven photocatalyst regardless on the stacking configuration. The SeGa 2 Te/SeIn 2 Se in AA stacking satisfy the requirement for the band gap under both pH = 0 and pH = 7 according to standard water-splitting mechanism. The notable intrinsic electric field (v-EF) in the AB stacking of SeGa 2 Te/SeIn 2 Se alter the band alignment and enhance the overpotentials of the photogenerated carriers to efficiently drive the redox reaction. In both stacking, the type-II band alignment, suitable direct band gaps, high optical absorbance and high power conversion efficiency promote the photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, the functional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4) nanosheets are prepared to enhance the NO 2 resistibility of room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber. After corrosive gas NO 2 oxidation for 24 h, the water barrier ability of RTV nanocomposite coatings was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). At the optimal filler content of 0.3 wt.%, the impedance module | Z | of functional g-C 3 N 4 /RTV is 3☓108 Ωcm2 with the best coating integrality, compared with 2☓107 Ωcm2 for the functional graphene oxide (f-GO)/RTV and 6.45☓106 Ωcm2 for the pure RTV silicone rubber. The microstructure evolution in nanocomposite was investigated by positron annihilation lifetime spectra (PALS). The results indicate that the functional g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets improve the interfacial compatibility and reinforce the RTV matrix, which decrease the free volume for NO 2 diffusion. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the triazine structures in the g-C 3 N 4 surface can effectively interact with NO 2 molecules. Simultaneously, silanes grafting promotes exfoliation and good dispersity of g-C 3 N 4. Due to highly decentralized two-dimensional functionalized g-C 3 N 4 with high aspect ratios, the significant synergy effect between physical barrier and chemisorption is achieved. In terms of land cover classification, optical images have been proven to have good classification performance. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has the characteristics of working all-time and all-weather. It has more significant advantages over optical images for the recognition of some scenes, such as water bodies. One of the current challenges is how to fuse the benefits of both to obtain more powerful classification capabilities. This study proposes a classification model based on random forest with the conditional random fields (CRF) for feature-level fusion classification using features extracted from polarized SAR and optical images. In this paper, feature importance is introduced as a weight in the pairwise potential function of the CRF to improve the correction rate of misclassified points. The results show that the dataset combining the two provides significant improvements in feature identification when compared to the dataset using optical or polarized SAR image features alone. Among the four classification models used, the random forest-importance_ conditional random fields (RF-Im_CRF) model developed in this paper obtained the best overall accuracy (OA) and Kappa coefficient, validating the effectiveness of the method. Abstract: Based on the first-principle calculations performed by Vienna Ab initio simulation package (VASP), we report the size limitation of half-metallic properties in hybrid zigzag BCN nanoribbons. Both boron–carbon (B–C) and nitrogen–carbon (N–C) interfacial hybrid zigzag BCN nanoribbons are considered. We find that all hybrid systems establish antiferromagnetic ground states. Moreover their electronic properties are mainly determined by the carbon rather than boron nitride segments. Transitions between semiconductor, half-metal and metal can be realized in both systems as the width of the carbon segment increases. However, the half-metallic property can only exist in the systems for which the zigzag carbon chain is less than 6 and 9 for B–C and N–C interfacial systems, respectively. As long as the carbon segment is wider than the above sizes, the systems behave as metals. This effect derives from the electron or hole doping of carbon on the BN segment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

How to fundamentally suppress charge transport is one of the essential issues in polymer dielectrics. This work reports significant charge transport suppression by glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) side group modification on polypropylene (PP). Experimental and computational investigations discover for the first time a quasi-hydrogen bond effect generated by carbonyl and epoxide of GMA in PP inter/intramolecular structure, while introducing trap energy levels within the HOMO-LUMO gap. These energy levels suppress the leakage current of GMA-modified PP thanks to the charge-trapping effect. The quasi-hydrogen bond originating from the interaction between the high-polar GMA group and flexible PP chain raises the thermostability while averaging the electron distribution between hydrogen and acceptor oxygen, which is conducive to lessening electric weak points, suppressing charge transport, and finally enhancing the electrical breakdown strength. This work provides new thinking on polymer dielectric design and charge transport regulation utilizing electron structure and weak interaction at the molecular scale.
