Abstract Background Recent studies pointed up that curcumin produces an anti-nociceptive effect in inflammatory and neuropathic pain. However, the possible mechanisms of action that underline the anti-allodynic effect induced by curcumin are not yet established. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible anti-allodynic effect of curcumin in rats with L5-L6 spinal nerve ligation (SNL). Furthermore, we study the possible participation of the NO-cyclic GMP-ATP-sensitive K+ channels pathway in the anti-allodynic effect induced by curcumin. Methods Tactile allodynia was measured using von Frey filaments by the up-down method in female Wistar rats subjected to SNL model of neuropathic pain. Results Intrathecal and oral administration of curcumin prevented, in a dose-dependent fashion, SNL-induced tactile allodynia. The anti-allodynic effect induced by curcumin was prevented by the intrathecal administration of L-NAME (100 μg/rat, a non-selective nitric oxide synthase inhibitor), ODQ (10 μg/rat, an inhibitor of guanylate-cyclase), and glibenclamide (50 μg/rat, channel blocker of ATP-sensitive K+ channels). Conclusions These data suggest that the anti-allodynic effect induced by curcumin is mediated, at least in part, by the NO-cyclic GMP-ATP-sensitive K+ channels pathway in the SNL model of neuropathic pain in rats.

Objetivo: Reportar los resultados iniciales de la cirugía estereotáctica con CyberKnife® (CK®) para etapas avanzadas de melanoma de cuerpo ciliar y coroides (MCC-C) en pacientes mexicanos. Método: Revisión retrospectiva de expedientes clínicos. Se analizaron los resultados de los pacientes a quienes se trató con CK® (Accuray Inc, Sunnyvale, CA, Estados Unidos). Resultados: Cuatro pacientes con MCC-C fueron tratados bajo este protocolo. La media de edad fue de 53.2 ± 5.3 años (rango: 47-60). La mediana de seguimiento fue de 9.5 ± 3.1 meses (rango: 5-12). El diámetro promedio del tumor fue de 13.49 mm, el grosor promedio fue de 11.74 mm y el volumen tumoral promedio fue de 1251.97 mm3. Los tumores tuvieron una configuración de domo (50%) y de seta (50%), de tamaño mediano a grande. Tres pacientes tuvieron un tumor T3b y uno tuvo un tumor T4d en fase inicial según el American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). Se prescribió una dosis promedio de radiación de 2763 ± 181,3 cGy al 90% de la línea de isodosis. Todos los pacientes lograron el control local del tumor después de una sesión de radiocirugía en la última visita de seguimiento. Un paciente presentó datos de toxicidad aguda (desprendimiento seroso de retina) y fue tratado con éxito. Ninguno de los pacientes precisó enucleación secundaria. Conclusiones: El abordaje multidisciplinario con CK® es una terapia efectiva en el manejo del MCC-C de tamaño mediano a grande. Es necesario mayor tiempo de seguimiento para confirmar estos hallazgos y evaluar la morbilidad a largo plazo.

Objectives: Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) report high levels of stress that can interfere with important child and family treatments. Limited past research considers how the caregiving experience and social determinants of health may contribute to treatment engagement and outcomes, particularly in underrepresented families, who already experience service and health disparities. We aimed to assess the experiences of caring for an individual with ASD, with specific emphasis on perceptions of stress. Methods: Three key informant interviews were conducted with parents (n = 1) and providers (n = 2) of children with ASD to refine interview guide questions. Once questions were refined, four focus groups (n = 17) and one key informant interview were conducted with parents of children with ASD who were (a) non-white, (b) Spanish speakers, (c) of limited financial resources, and/or (d) living in rural counties. All participants lived in Western New York, with the majority residing in Rochester. Content analysis by two independent coders was used to identify and refine themes. Results: Themes included--(a) caregiving for an individual with ASD can cause interference with family functioning, (b) misperceptions of ASD contribute to caregiver stress, (c) culture contributes to stressors for parents, and (d) service navigation difficulties are a significant source of stress. Suggestions for interventions to address parents stress included: modular and integrative treatments for multiple content areas, addressing cultural barriers to treatment engagement, and education on ASD to the community. Conclusions: Parent-focused interventions for caregivers of children with ASD should specifically explore and address service and health disparities for parents, especially those predicated on race, ethnicity, rurality, and language of origin. Interventions should also be individualized to parent characteristics and experiences. In future research on parent training, the unique contributions of caregiver stress and other characteristics (e.g. race-related stress, geographic location) should be included as potential modifiers of treatment.

Extensive research efforts are devoted to understand fine root trait variation and to confirm the existence of a belowground root economics spectrum (RES) from acquisitive to conservative root strategies that is analogous to the leaf economics spectrum (LES). The economics spectrum implies a trade-off between maximizing resource acquisition and productivity or maximizing resource conservation and longevity; however, this theoretical framework still remains controversial for roots. We compiled a database of 320 Mediterranean woody and herbaceous species to critically assess if the classic economics spectrum theory can be broadly extended to roots. Fine roots displayed a wide diversity of forms and properties in Mediterranean vegetation, resulting in a multidimensional trait space. The main trend of variation in this multidimensional root space is analogous to the main axis of LES, while the second trend of variation is partially determined by an anatomical trade-off between tissue density and diameter. Specific root area (SRA) is the main trait explaining species distribution along the RES, regardless of the selected traits. We advocate for the need to unify and standardize the criteria and approaches used within the economics framework between leaves and roots, for the sake of theoretical consistency.

Background Determinants of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance are complex; how perceptions of the effectiveness of science, healthcare and government impact personal COVID-19 vaccine acceptance is unclear, despite all three domains providing critical roles in development, funding and provision, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccine.Objective To estimate impact of perception of science, healthcare systems, and government along with sociodemographic, psychosocial, and cultural characteristics on vaccine acceptance.Design We conducted a global nested analytical cross-sectional study of how the perceptions of healthcare, government and science systems have impacted COVID-19 on vaccine acceptance.Setting Global Facebook, Instagram and Amazon Mechanical Turk (mTurk) users from 173 countries.Participants 7411 people aged 18 years or over, and able to read English, Spanish, Italian, or French.Measurements We used Χ2 analysis and logistic regression-derived adjusted Odds Ratios (aORs) and 95% CIs to evaluate the relationship between effectiveness perceptions and vaccine acceptance controlling for other factors. We used natural language processing and thematic analysis to analyse the role of vaccine-related narratives in open-ended explanations of effectiveness.Results After controlling for confounding, attitude toward science was a strong predictor of vaccine acceptance, more so than other attitudes, demographic, psychosocial or COVID-19-related variables (aOR: 2.1; 95% CI: 1.8 to 2.5). The rationale for science effectiveness was dominated by vaccine narratives, which were uncommon in other domains.Limitations This study did not include participants from countries where Facebook and Amazon mTurk are not available, and vaccine acceptance reflected intention rather than actual behaviour.Conclusions As our findings show, vaccine-related issues dominate public perception of science’s impact around COVID-19, and this perception of science relates strongly to the decision to obtain vaccination once available.

This study aimed to explore the variability in nasal airflow patterns among different sexes and populations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We focused on evaluating the universality and applicability of dimensionless parameters R (bilateral nasal resistance) and ϕ (nasal flow asymmetry), initially established in a Caucasian Spanish cohort, across a broader spectrum of human populations to assess normal breathing function in healthy airways. In this retrospective study, CT scans from Cambodia (20 males, 20 females), Russia (20 males, 18 females), and Spain (19 males, 19 females) were analyzed. A standardized CFD workflow was implemented to calculate R‐ϕ parameters from these scans. Statistical analyses were conducted to assess and compare these parameters across different sexes and populations, emphasizing their distribution and variances. Our results indicated no significant sex‐based differences in the R parameter across the populations. However, moderate sexual dimorphism in the ϕ parameter was observed in the Cambodian group. Notably, no geographical differences were found in either R or ϕ parameters, suggesting consistent nasal airflow characteristics across the diverse human groups studied. The study also emphasized the importance of using dimensionless variables to effectively analyze the relationships between form and function in nasal airflow. The observed consistency of R‐ϕ parameters across various populations highlights their potential as reliable indicators in both medical practice and further CFD research, particularly in diverse human populations. Our findings suggest the potential applicability of dimensionless CFD parameters in analyzing nasal airflow, highlighting their utility across diverse demographic and geographic contexts. This research advances our understanding of nasal airflow dynamics and underscores the need for additional studies to validate these parameters in broader population cohorts. The approach of employing dimensionless parameters paves the way for future research that eliminates confounding size effects, enabling more accurate comparisons across different populations and sexes. The implications of this study are significant for the advancement of personalized medicine and the development of diagnostic tools that accommodate individual variations in nasal airflow. The article discusses the continuing hegemonic U.S. policies on the heterogeneous Latines population that obscure their social identity with ramifications on their public health as of July 2024. Topics covered include the roots and issues of U.S. racial stratification and ethnic classification and measurement of Latines, and the latter's resulting lack of representation in health research. Also noted is the need to analyze intersectional Latine identities to advance Latine health equity.

A series of cyclometallated gold(III) complexes 21–27 of general formula [Au(dppta)(azdtc)Cl] (dppta = N,N-diisopropyl-P,P-diphenylphosphinothioic amide-κ2C,S; azdtc = azol(in)ium-2-dithiocarboxylate-κ1S) were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic and diffractometric techniques. Treatment of [Au(dppta)(azdtc)Cl] complexes with methanol led to their quantitative transformation into a novel family of (C^S, S^S)-cyclometallated gold(III) complexes of general formula [Au(dppta)(azmtd)] (azmdt = azol(in)ium-2-(methoxy)methanedithiol-κ2S,S) 28–34. All the [Au(dppta)(azdtc)Cl] complexes 21–27 catalyzed the alkylation of indoles, whereas [Au(dppta)(azmtd)] complexes 28–34 were inactive. Among the synthesized derivatives, complex 22 displayed the highest catalytic activity, leading to a series of functionalized indoles in excellent yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Ecogeographic variation in human nasal anatomy has historically been analyzed on skeletal morphology and interpreted in the context of climatic adaptations to respiratory air‐conditioning. Only a few studies have analyzed nasal soft tissue morphology, actively involved in air‐conditioning physiology. Materials and Methods: We used in vivo computer tomographic scans of (N = 146) adult individuals from Cambodia, Chile, Russia, and Spain. We conducted (N = 438) airflow simulations during inspiration using computational fluid dynamics to analyze the air‐conditioning capacities of the nasal soft tissue in the inflow, functional, and outflow tract, under three different environmental conditions: cold–dry; hot–dry; and hot–humid. We performed statistical comparisons between populations and sexes. Results: Subjects from hot–humid regions showed significantly lower air‐conditioning capacities than subjects from colder regions in all the three conditions, specifically within the isthmus region in the inflow tract, and the anterior part of the internal functional tract. Posterior to the functional tract, no differences were detected. No differences between sexes were found in any of the tracts and under any of the conditions. Discussion: Our statistical analyses support models of climatic adaptations of anterior nasal soft tissue morphology that fit with, and complement, previous research on dry skulls. However, our results challenge a morpho‐functional model that attributes air‐conditioning capacities exclusively to the functional tract located within the nasal cavity. Instead, our findings support studies that have suggested that both, the external nose and the intra‐facial soft tissue airways contribute to efficiently warming and humidifying air during inspiration. Abstract Background The circumsporozoite protein (CSP) of Plasmodium is a key surface antigen that induces antibodies and T-cells, conferring immune protection in animal models and humans. However, much of the work on CSP and immunity has been developed based on studies using rodent or non-human primate CSP antigens, which may not be entirely translatable to CSP expressed by human malaria parasites, especially considering the host specificity of the different species. Methods Using a genetically engineered strain of Plasmodium berghei that expresses luciferase, GFP and the Plasmodium falciparum orthologue of CSP, the effect of laboratory preparation, mosquito treatment and mouse factors on sporozoite infectivity was assessed using an in vivo bioluminescence assay on mice. This assay was compared with a PCR-based protection assay using an already described monoclonal antibody that can provide sterile protection against sporozoite challenge. Results Bioluminescence assay demonstrated similar detection levels of the quantity and kinetics of liver-stage infection, compared to PCR-based detection. This assay was used to evaluate treatment of sporozoite and delivery method on mouse infectivity, as well as the effects of age, sex and strain of mice. Finally, this assay was used to test the protective capacity of monoclonal antibody AB317; results strongly recapitulate the findings of previous work on this antibody. Conclusions The PbGFP-Luc line and in vivo bioluminescence imaging provide highly sensitive read-outs of liver-stage infection in mice, and this method can be useful to reliably evaluate potency of pre-erythrocytic interventions.

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation that is due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities. The main causes of COPD are Gene-environment interactions associated with tobacco smoking (COPD-TS) and biomass smoke (COPD-BS). It is well know that microRNAs (miRNAs) participate in the control of post-transcriptional regulation and are involved in COPD-TS; nevertheless, those miRNAS are participating in the COPD-BS are unidentified. Thus, we studied which miRNAs are involved in COPD-BS (GOLD stages I–II). Methods In the screening phase, the profile of the miRNAs was analyzed in serum samples (n = 3) by means of a PCR array. Subsequently, the miRNAs were validated with RT-qPCR (n = 25) in the corresponding study groups. Additionally, the serum concentration of Notch1 was measured comparing COPD-BS vs COPD-TS. Results miR-34a was down-regulated in COPD- BS vs COPD-TS. In the other study groups, three miRNAs were differentially expressed: miR-374a was down-regulated in COPD-BS vs C, miR-191-5p was up-regulated in COPD-BS vs H-BS, and miR-21-5p was down-regulated in COPD-TS compared to the C group. Moreover, the serum concentration of Notch1, one of the targets of miR-34a, was increased in COPD-BS compared to women with COPD-TS. Conclusions This is the first study in patients with COPD due to biomass that demonstrates miRNA expression differences between patients. The observations support the concept that COPD by biomass has a different phenotype than COPD due to tobacco smoking, which could have important implications for the treatment of these diseases.

Au XIXe siècle, période historique d’avancées scientifiques ayant fait suite aux Lumières, les Sciences et les Lettres étaient des métiers réservés au genre masculin ; la traduction spécialisée n’y fit pas exception. De façon quelque peu fortuite, María Antonia Gutiérrez Bueno y Ahoiz (1781-1874), fille du chimiste et pharmacien Pedro Gutiérrez Bueno, commence sa carrière de traductrice avec la publication d’un recueil d’articles sur la maladie appelée « choléra-morbus » sous son pseudonyme masculin. Elle traduit du français vers l’espagnol et la plupart de ses traductions traitent des problèmes médicaux. À travers l’analyse des textes originaux et de ses traductions, on observe l’utilisation des techniques traductologiques habituelles au XIXe siècle. De même, elle assume son statut de « médiateur linguistique » afin de transférer les connaissances médicales de France en Espagne.

Abstract Background Inflammation is a symptom associated with many diseases. This symptom is treated with steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which can cause severe side effects when used as long-term treatments. Natural products are an alternative source of new compounds with anti-inflammatory activity. Jefea gnaphalioides (Astereaceae) (A. Gray) is a plant species used to treat inflammatory problems, in Mexico. This study determined the anti-inflammatory activity and the composition of the methanol extract of Jefea gnaphalioides (MEJG). Methods The extract was obtained by heating the plant in methanol at boiling point for 4 h, and then the solvent was evaporated under vacuum (MEJG). The derivatization of the extract was performed using Bis-(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide, and the composition was determined by GC-MS. Total Phenols and flavonoids were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu AlCl3 reaction respectively. The antioxidant activity of MEJG was determined by DPPH method. The acute and chronic anti-inflammatory effects were evaluated on a mouse ear edema induced with 12-O-Tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). Acute oral toxicity was tested in mice at doses of MEJG of 5000, 2500 and 1250 mg/kg. The levels of NO, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 were determinate in J774A.1 macrophages stimulated by Lipopolysaccharide. The production of inflammatory interleukins was measured using commercial kits, and nitric oxide was measured by the Griess reaction. Results The anti-inflammatory activity of MEJG in acute TPA-induced ear edema was 80.7 ± 2.8%. This result was similar to the value obtained with indomethacin (IND) at the same dose (74.3 ± 2.8%). In chronic TPA-induced edema at doses of 200 mg/kg, the inhibition was 45.7%, which was similar to that obtained with IND (47.4%). MEJG have not toxic effects even at a dose of 5000 mg/kg. MEJG at 25, 50, 100 and 200 μg/mL decreased NO, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 production in macrophages stimulated with LPS. The major compounds in MEJG were α-D-Glucopyranose (6.71%), Palmitic acid (5.59%), D-(+)-Trehalose (11.91%), Quininic acid (4.29%) and Aucubin (1.17%). Total phenolic content was 57.01 mg GAE/g and total flavonoid content was 35.26 mg QE/g MEJG had antioxidant activity. Conclusions MEJG has anti-inflammatory activity.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the application of efficient microorganisms (EM) on the productive performance of lettuce and radish. The experiment was carried out in an organoponic culture in the municipality of Matanzas, Cuba, from December 2017 to January 2018. Five treatments were studied: control (0), EM 8 mL m-2 at 0 days after the transplant (DAT) (EM 8-0), EM 8 mL m-2 at 15 DAT (EM 8-15), EM 10 mL m-2 at 0 DAT (EM 10-0), and EM 10 mL m-2 at 15 DAT (EM 10-15).
