160. 'Crossing the Rubicon': Understanding Chinese EFL Students' Volitional Process Underlying In-Class Participation with the Theory of Planned Behaviour

Abstract

An extended model based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was used to study Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) students' in-class participation. The model included the core TPB constructs (behavioural intentions, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control/self-efficacy) and 2 additional constructs (foreign language classroom anxiety and face-saving) frequently discussed in the literature about Chinese EFL classroom dynamics. A total of 199 Chinese students enrolled in a Sino-American international branch campus were surveyed. The results of a partial least squares (PLS) path modelling analysis revealed that attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control/self-efficacy, and face-saving explained 46% of the variance in intentions to participate in English in class. Perceived behavioural control/self-efficacy fully mediated the negative indirect effect of foreign language classroom anxiety on intentions. Pedagogical implications and future directions are discussed for implementation purposes.

Abstract

Chlorpyrifos insecticide is one of the most extensively used organophosphorus pesticides due to its low cost and excellent performance in controlling pests in agriculture fields and gardens. The presence of pesticides in the aquatic environment produces a slew of issues for both humans and ecosystems. The purpose of this research is to assess the photocatalytic detoxification of chlorpyrifos in wastewater utilizing g-C₃N₄/GO nanoparticles. The g-C₃N₄/GO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by using calcinations and hydrothermal methods. Additionally, the photocatalytic detoxification of chlorpyrifos was examined by optimizing several parameters such as catalyst type, irradiation period, catalyst concentrations, and pH. The photocatalytic efficiency of g-C₃N₄/GO nanoparticles was determined by using a UV–visible spectrophotometer. According to the findings of this study, the photo detoxification effectiveness of chlorpyrifos pesticides rises with increasing illumination time, and detoxification of chlorpyrifos by using a photo-catalyst was strongly influenced by the operational parameters. Rising pollution levels worldwide has moved governments to switch from carbon based fuels to alternative fuels. Hydrogen, a clean energy carrier can rightly be called as the fuel of future. Hydrogen is produced through various methods but water electrolysis is by far one of the most efficient approaches. Various expensive photocatalysts like Ag, Au, Pt, etc. are used during the process, which limits its commercial application. Abstract

Complex vanadium oxide is an excellent multifunctional material. Various forms of vanadium oxide was synthesized out of them orthorhombic V2O5 form is more stable. In this manuscript hydrothermal process and mechanochemical process is adopted of the synthesised of Vanadium oxide in different morphological phases. The samples are characteristics by XRD methods using a hydrothermal technique, the V2O5 precursor was successfully synthesised by mixing NH4VO3 and C2H2O4 in a 1:1 molar concentration ratio and conducted the reaction at 150 °C for 7 hours. The orthorhombic phase V2O5 formation is confirmed by the X-ray diffraction. The position of the peak and the quality of the phase formation is tabulated in the paper. Hydrothermal method displays high crystalline belt like formation while mechanochemical method shows formation of nano-particle with deteriorated degree of crystalline confirmed by SEM. The synthesis of high crystalline vanadium oxide orthorhombic phase in different morphologies opens up a way to utilize such materials towards the energy storage and sensing applications. Abstract

Background: Eustachian tube balloon dilation (ETBD) has been Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for refractory Eustachian tube dysfunction since 2016. While ETBD is generally seen as safe, the complication profile has not been well defined. Objective: The objective of this study was to utilize the FDA manufacturer and user facility device experience (MAUDE) database to better assess adverse events (AE) related to ETBD. Methods: This is a study of a multiinstitutional database maintained by the U.S. FDA. A database analysis was performed via the collaboration of multiple clinicians at tertiary referral centers. The FDA MAUDE database was queried for all medical device reports (MDR) related to ETBD devices from January 2012 to November 2022. Eighty-eight unique MDR were identified, 16 of which met inclusion criteria. Results: Three MDRs were classified as device-related (18.8%); none resulted in an AE. Thirteen MDRs (81.3%) were patient-related; all were classified as AEs. The most common AE was postoperative subcutaneous emphysema (n = 6, 46.2%). Of the patients with subcutaneous emphysema, there was a wide range of severity. The most severe AE (n = 1, 6.3%) was postoperative stroke secondary to carotid artery dissection. Conclusion: Though ETBD is generally seen as a safe procedure, there have been several concerning AEs reported to date. Increased awareness of ETBD complications can serve as a primer for improved patient education and counseling during the informed consent process and aid surgeons in clinical decision-making. Abstract

The need for reliable, fast, and accurate detection of fault is the key to fault-tolerant control reconfiguration of any flight control system. It is known that faults such as structural damage greatly modify the aerodynamic characteristics, often represented by stability and control derivatives. They also result in abrupt deterioration of flight performance and handling quality, which impairs safety. Since no detection technique is as reliable and fast as the Human Visual System (HVS), this paper demonstrates how popular vision algorithms such as edge detection and structural similarity index can be used for real-time detection of vertical tail damage of a fighter aircraft. A novel geometric method is proposed for fault identification using traditional mathematical geometry. Empirical techniques are used for the estimation of stability and control derivatives to generate a mathematical model of damaged aircraft instead of relying on expensive wind tunnel data. Flight mechanics analysis of the data generated confirms the effects of vertical damage in terms of reduction of static and dynamic directional stability and its control effectiveness. The parametrized state matrix thus obtained for the given flight condition thus leads to efficient real-time control reconfiguration of a damaged aircraft for safe recovery. The importance of this paper lies in using the established techniques of image processing for fault detection of damaged aircraft and parametrization for subsequent control reconfiguration, which is a novel application.
