165. Surface Stabilization of Ni-Rich Layered Cathode Materials via Surface Engineering with LiTaO3for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract

Recently, Ni-rich layered cathode materials have become the most common material used for lithium-ion batteries. From a structural viewpoint, it is crucial to stabilize the surface structures of such materials, as they are prone to undesirable side reactions and particle cracking in which intergranular microcracks form at the particle surfaces and then propagate inside. As a simplified engineering technique for obtaining Ni-rich cathode materials with high reversibility and long-term cycling stability, we propose a facile surface coating of piezoelectric LiTaO3onto a Ni-rich cathode material to enhance the charge transfer reaction and surface structural integrity. Based on theoretical and experimental investigation, we demonstrate that this surface protection approach is effective at enhancing the reversibility and mechanical strength of Ni-rich cathode materials, leading to a stable cycle performance at up to 150 cycles, even at 60 °C. Furthermore, the piezoelectric characteristics of the surface LiTaO3can enhance the rate capability of Ni-rich cathode materials at current densities of up to 2.0C. The results of this study provide a practical insight on the development of Ni-rich cathode materials for practical use in electric vehicle applications.

Abstract

The zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 are well-known as belonging to the series of metal-organic frameworks. Using different types of metal ions in them, such as Zn2+ and Co2+ simultaneously, brings both advantages and disadvantages with respect to the carbonization process. For tailoring their properties, we suggest that the best approach involves control of the bimetallic ZIF-derived carbon nanoarchitecture, which is hybridized through the synergistic effects of each metal ion. In this study, the bimetallic ZIFs were designed by controlling the molar ratio of zinc (Zn2+) and cobalt (Co2+) ions, and the carbon nanoarchitecture was subsequently formed by a facile heat treatment and acid leaching. We demonstrate this approach to achieve tailored ZIF derived carbon nanoarchitectures with different pore sizes, surface areas, and degree of graphitization. These pave the way to finding the optimal carbon nanoarchitecture for specific applications such as Li-O2 air cell.

Abstract

Silicon (Si) based materials are highly desirable to replace currently used graphite anode for lithium ion batteries. Nevertheless, its usage is still a big challenge due to poor battery performance and scale-up issue. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) architectures, which remain unresolved so far, would give them more interesting and unexpected properties. Herein, we report a facile, cost-effective, and scalable approach to synthesize Si nanocrystals embedded 2D SiO x nanofoils for next-generation lithium ion batteries through a solution-evaporation-induced interfacial sol-gel reaction of hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSiO 1.5 , HSQ). The unique nature of the thus-prepared centimeter scale 2D nanofoil with a large surface area enables ultrafast Li + insertion and extraction, with a reversible capacity of more than 650 mAh g -1 , even at a high current density of 50 C (50 A g -1 ). Moreover, the 2D nanostructured Si/SiO x nanofoils show excellent cycling performance up to 200 cycles and maintain their initial dimensional stability. This superior performance stems from the peculiar nanoarchitecture of 2D Si/SiO x nanofoils, which provides short diffusion paths for lithium ions and abundant free space to effectively accommodate the huge volume changes of Si during cycling.

Abstract

A new nanoarchitecture approach based on metal-organic frameworks (MOF) is reported that can achieve high electrochemical energy storage via utilizing both electric double-layer supercapacitive and pseudocapacitive properties within a single nanoporous composite particle. Herein, a predesigned Co 2+ -excess bimetallic hybrid Co/Zn zeolitic imidazole framework was used to fabricate a composite containing N-doped nanoporous carbon with a rich carbon nanotube (CNT) content on particle surfaces without H 2 , with the carbon coexisting with Co nanoparticles (NPs) and Co 3 O 4 , through controlled carbonization at 800 °C and subsequent oxidation at 250-300 °C. Optimized nanoporous carbon composites were obtained by tracking the formation of Co 3 O 4 and destruction of N-doped nanoporous carbon (NPC) via detailed X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The resulting material showed a high surface area of ∼202 m 2 g -1 and included coexisting micro- and mesoporous N-doped carbon, CNTs, Co NPs, and Co 3 O 4 (15 nm in size) after a thermal oxidation process in air at 250 °C for 5 h. Surprisingly, the as-prepared MOF-derived nanoarchitecture exhibited superior electrochemical storage performance, with a capacitance of 545 F g -1 within a wide potential window, achieving up to 320% enhanced capacitance compared to that of pristine nanoporous carbon, which is higher than those of most MOF-derived carbons reported so far. Our strategic nanoarchitecture design for MOFs offers a new opportunity for future applications in high performance energy storage systems.

Abstract

The electronic structures of CeTe2 are investigated to explore the correlation between the magnetic charge density wave and superconducting phases by using the local spin density approximation methods. The total energy calculations indicate that the ABBA -type antiferromagnetic configuration is the most stable while the stability is weakened by pressure.
