151. A study of response of a LuYAP : Ce array with innovative assembling for PET

Abstract

We propose the characterization of a first array of 10×10 Lutetium Yttrium Orthoaluminate Perovskite (LuYAP:Ce) crystals, 2 mm×2 mm×10 mm pixel size, with an innovative assembling designed to enhance light output, uniformity and detection efficiency. The innovation consists of the use of 0.015 mm thick dielectric coating as inter-pixel light-insulators, manufactured by Crytur (Czech Republic) intended to improve crystal insulation and then light collection. Respect to the traditional treatment with 0.2 mm of white epoxy, a thinner pixel gap enhances packing fraction up to 98% with a consequent improvement of detection efficiency. Spectroscopic characterization of the array was performed by a Hamamatsu R6231 photomultiplier tube. A pixel-by-pixel scanning with a collimated 99mTc radioisotope (140 keV photon energy) highlighted a deviation in pulse height close to 3.5% respect to the overall mean value. Meanwhile, in term of energy resolution a difference between the response of single pixel and the array of about 10% was measured. Results were also supported and validated by Monte Carlo simulations performed with GEANT4. Although the dielectric coating pixel insulator cannot overcome the inherent limitations of LuYAP crystal due to its self-absorption of light (still present), this study demonstrated that the new coating treatment allows better light collection (nearly close to the expected one) with in addition a very good uniformity between different pixels. Abstract

The acquisition and analysis of the physical and mechanical properties and geostructural character of the rocks, that constitute the excavation front of a argillite's quarry for ceramics near to Sadali, has allowed the geomechanical characterization of the dolomitic rocky mass and the argillitic formation below. The front is, at the moment, potentially unstable, with the collapse of dolomitic rock's blocks on the squares of the quarry. Instability has been certainly caused by a lack of basal support that interests main part of the front extension. The analysis of the dolomitic rocky mass has been faced applying the Classification of Bieniawski, in way to establish its geomechanical quality. The optimal solution to put in safety the front is the restoration of the basal support, through the realization of a terrace and a superficial drain system.

Abstract

A small field of view gamma camera based on a Position Sensitive Photomultiplier Tube has been used for tomoscintigraphic imaging of breast phantoms. The breast phantoms consist of small hot quantities of 99mTc placed in a plastic pot filled with a lower concentration 99mTc solution. The volume of the hot quantities varied from 0.5 to 0.25ml and the target to background activity ratio varied from 3:1 to 5:1. The impact of the acquisition time per projection and the number of projections on image quality has been investigated. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The results of studies conducted with a small field of view tomographic gamma camera based on a Position Sensitive Photomultiplier Tube are reported. The system has been used for the evaluation of radiopharmaceuticals in small animals. Phantom studies have shown a spatial resolution of 2mm in planar and 2-3mm in tomographic imaging. Imaging studies in mice have been carried out both in 2D and 3D. Conventional radiopharmaceuticals have been used and the results have been compared with images from a clinically used system. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The results of studies conducted with a small field of view gamma camera based on a Position Sensitive Photomultiplier Tube (PSPMT) and a pixelized scintillator crystal, made of CsI(Tl), are reported. Using a computer-controlled step motor allowing object rotation, projection data from several angles are acquired. Images of slices of the object are obtained and compared with the use of a Filtered Backprojection and a Maximum Likelihood algorithm. Phantom studies have shown a spatial resolution of 2-3 mm in both two and three dimensions, and mice experiments have shown successful SPECT imaging of small organs. 3D images obtained from a paraffin cylinder phantom and from a 99mTc water solution phantom showed that a "hot" spot with a size down to 0.2 ml can be detected with a resolution of about 2 mm if the tumor to background activity ratio is 6:1. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

99mTc MIBI scintimammography is a sensitive and specific diagnostic technique for breast cancer detection when cancers more than 1 cm sized are considered. However the sensitivity falls in the case of submillimetric lesions. We developed a new Small Field of View, High Resolution Detector, able to image the breast in similar conditions of x-ray mammography: it allows the performance of Single Photon Emission Mammography (SPEM) studies. Seven patients with suspicion of malignant lesions were comparatively submitted to a Prone Scintimammography (PSM) by Anger camera and to a cranio-caudal view SPEM. The final diagnosis was reached by histopathology. Four malignant lesions were identified by SPEM but not by PSM, which that failed to image two submillimetric cancers. Both the cameras gave normal findings for benign lesions, confirming the high sensitivity of this technique. The results allow us to consider the SPEM camera as promising to improve scintimammographic sensitivity, even when small-sized tumors are examined.

Abstract

Medical imaging is a fundamental tool in the diagnosis, treatments, and monitoring of disease processes as cancer. Detectors of large area and high Field Of View are necessary to scan the whole body in a reasonable time. Relatively large area photodetectors are necessary even for imaging of small mice and rats with high sensitivities and spatial resolutions, generally obtained by using pinhole or multipinhole collimators. Standard PET scanners, with scintillators coupled to photomultipliers, have generally a limited detector area due to the high costs of both scintillators and photomultipliers. In this respect, the replacement of photomultipliers with gaseous photodetectors represents a possible solution of the problem and brings the additional advantage to provide devices with sensitive areas free from dead regions. In this paper we report on a PET scanner equipped with a multiwire proportional chamber with a CsI thin film as photoconverter. A similar approach has already been successfully pursued in nuclear and particle physics experiments. A prototype of such a PET detector has been designed and built, and will be tested soon. Abstract

With the recently developed ISPA (imaging silicon pixel array)-tube attached either to a planar YAlO/sub 3/(Ce) (YAP) disc (1 mm thick) or to a matrix of optically-separated YAP-crystals (5 mm high, 0.6/spl times/n.6 mm/sup 2/ cross-section) we achieved high spatial resolution of /sup 57/Co-122 keV photons. The vacuum-sealed ISPA-tube is only 4 cm long with 3.5 cm diameter and consists of a photocathode viewed at 3cm distance by a silicon pixel chip, directly detecting the photoelectrons. The chip-anode consists of 1024 rectangular pixels with 73 /spl mu/m/spl times/500 /spl mu/m edges, each bump-bonded to their individual front-end electronics. The total pixel array read-out time is 10 ps. The measured intrinsic spatial resolutions (FWHM) of this ISPA-camera are 700 /spl mu/m (planar YAP) and 310 /spl mu/m (YAP-matrix). Apart from its already demonstrated application for particle tracking with scintillating fibers, the ISPA-tube provides also an excellent tool in medicine, biology, and chemistry.
