Worldwide, the frequency (pitch) of blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) calls has been decreasing since first recorded in the 1960s. This frequency decline occurs over annual and inter-annual timescales and has recently been documented in other baleen whale species, yet it remains unexplained. In the Northeast Pacific, blue whales produce two calls, or units, that, when regularly repeated, are referred to as song: A and B calls. In this population, frequency decline has thus far only been examined in B calls. In this work, passive acoustic data collected in the Southern California Bight from 2006 to 2019 were examined to determine if A calls are also declining in frequency and whether the call pulse rate was similarly impacted. Additionally, frequency measurements were made for B calls to determine whether the rate of frequency decline is the same as was calculated when this phenomenon was first reported in 2009. We found that A calls decreased at a rate of 0.32 Hz yr-1 during this period and that B calls were still decreasing, albeit at a slower rate (0.27 Hz yr-1) than reported previously. The A call pulse rate also declined over the course of the study, at a rate of 0.006 pulses/s yr-1. With this updated information, we consider the various theories that have been proposed to explain frequency decline in blue whales. We conclude that no current theory adequately accounts for all aspects of this phenomenon and consider the role that individual perception of song frequency may play. To understand the cause behind call frequency decline, future studies might want to explore the function of these songs and the mechanism for their synchronization. The ubiquitous nature of the frequency shift phenomenon may indicate a consistent level of vocal plasticity and fine auditory processing abilities across baleen whale species.

The yellowfin tuna represents a significant fishery resource in the Pacific Ocean. Its resource endowment status and spatial variation mechanisms are intricately influenced by marine environments, particularly under varying climate events. Consequently, investigating the spatial variation patterns of dominant environmental factors under diverse climate conditions, and understanding the response of yellowfin tuna catch volume based on the spatial heterogeneity among these environmental factors, presents a formidable challenge. This paper utilizes comprehensive 5°×5° yellowfin tuna longline fishing data and environmental data, including seawater temperature and salinity, published by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) for the period 2000–2021 in the Pacific Ocean. In conjunction with the Niño index, a multiscale geographically weighted regression model based on geographically weighted principal component analysis (GWPCA-MGWR) and spatial association between zones (SABZ) is employed for this study. The results indicate the following: (1) The spatial distribution of dominant environmental factors affecting the catch of Pacific yellowfin tuna is primarily divided into two types: seawater temperature dominates in the western Pacific Ocean, while salinity dominates in the eastern Pacific Ocean. When El Niño occurs, the area with seawater temperature as the dominant environmental factor in the western Pacific Ocean further extends eastward, and the water layers where the dominant environmental factors are located develop to deeper depths; when La Niña occurs, there is a clear westward expansion in the area with seawater salinity as the dominant factor in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This change in the spatial distribution pattern of dominant factors is closely related to the movement of the position of the warm pool and cold tongue under ENSO events. (2) The areas with a higher catch of Pacific yellowfin tuna are spatially associated with the dominant environmental factor of mid-deep seawater temperature (105–155 m temperature) to a greater extent than other factors, the highest correlation exceeds 70%, and remain relatively stable under different ENSO events. The formation of this spatial association pattern is related to the vertical movement of yellowfin tuna as affected by subsurface seawater temperature. (3) The GWPCA-MGWR model can fully capture the differences in environmental variability among subregions in the Pacific Ocean under different climatic backgrounds, intuitively reflect the changing areas and influencing boundaries from a macro perspective, and has a relatively accurate prediction on the trend of yellowfin tuna catch in the Pacific Ocean.

A lack of natural resources drives the oil dependency in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), hampering energy security and imposing high electricity tariffs in the region. Nevertheless, the Western Equatorial Pacific is known for its large Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and deep-sea water (DSW) temperature difference favorable for harvesting thermal energy. In this study, we selected 18 PICTs in the western Equatorial Pacific to estimate Annual Energy Production (AEP) for a 1 MW class Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant. We combined the DSW temperature from the mean in situ Argo profiles and 1 km resolution satellite SST data to estimate the thermal energy resource resolving the fine features of the island coastline. Furthermore, the twenty-year-long SST dataset was used to analyze the SST variability. The analysis showed that Equatorial islands and Southern islands have the highest inter-annual variability due to El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The power density varied from 0.26 to 0.32 W/m2 among the islands, with the lowest values found for the southernmost islands near the South Equatorial Countercurrent. Islands within the South Equatorial Current, Equatorial Undercurrent, and North Equatorial Countercurrent showed the highest values for both power density and gross power. Considering a 1 MW class OTEC plant, Annual Energy Production (AEP) in 2022 varied from 7 GWh to 8 GWh, with relatively low variability among islands near the Equator and in low latitudes. Considering the three variables, AEP, SST variability, and distance from the shore, Nauru is a potential candidate for OTEC, with a net power of 1.14 MW within 1 km from the shore.

On the basis of previously presented molecular studies, Rhizophora samoensis (Hochr.) Salvoza and R. brevistyla Salvoza (Rhizophoraceae) are here reinstated as valid names for the Eastern Pacific red mangroves. The identical meaning of vernacular names of R. samoensis from Samoa and coastal Ecuador is here reported for first time. The lectotype of the basionym Rhizophora mangle var. samoensis is designated.

Anderson et al.’s 2019 paper ‘Close Kin Proximity in Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) as a Driver of Population Genetic Structure in the Tropical Western and Central Pacific’ provided observations of genetically related individuals among sampled yellowfin tuna. Resampling of some individuals from the original study produced very different sequencing results when compared with the original dataset, one possible explanation of which is cross-contamination among the original samples. Re-analyses produced no indication of strong population structure, including a very slightly and consistent heterozygosity deficit with only one statistically significant pairwise FST value of 0.002. We identified only one pair of genetically similar individuals that could still be an artefact of lingering contamination. These new results therefore support a highly connected population of yellowfin tuna in the study area, although we do not rule out the potential for local adaptation driven by non-observed loci or genetic sub-structure operating at more contemporary scales.

ABSTRACTWe use the 2021 GEBCO grid to interpret the seabed geomorphology within the Cook Islands and adjacent areas. A complex geological history dating back to 125 Ma is manifested in a range of geoforms. These include abyssal plains, plateaux, volcanic and tectonic rises, seamount-knolls and chains and troughs, as well as fault zones. A Main Map at 1:3,000,000 scale is presented with example cross-sections, with 1:10,000,000 scale inset maps of bathymetry, mineral occurrences (the Cook Islands has a major polymetallic nodule resource), feature names and regional setting. We expect these map products to be of value to stakeholders interested in exploration and mineral resource assessment, marine habitat management, and the general make-up of this small island large ocean country.

Introduction: The rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) inhabits oceanic waters of tropical latitudes and exhibits philopatry in some oceanic islands. However, the species has been observed in shallow coastal waters in a few areas. Particularly in Central America, the rough-toothed dolphin has been reported by occasional records and strandings. For instance, the first confirmed record of this species in the Panama's Caribbean was on July 17, 2012, in a coastal region of the Chiriquí Lagoon during a bottlenose dolphin monitoring survey. Similarly, the first rough-toothed dolphin mass stranding reported for the Pacific of Panama was on April 20, 2016, at the Ostional Beach, where 60 dolphins stranded and ten died. These sightings and events offered a valuable opportunity to obtain samples to conduct genetic studies, which are scarce in the region. Objective: In this study, we present the first assessment of genetic diversity for rough-toothed dolphins based on mitochondrial DNA Control Region (mtDNA-CR) in the Panamanian Pacific and the Wider Caribbean. Methods: Samples were collected in Colombia (N=5), Panama (N-Caribbean=1, N-Pacific=9), and Puerto Rico (N=3) from free-ranging and stranded individuals. DNA was extracted from each sample, and a mtDNA segment of around 534 to 748 bp was amplified through the PCR reaction. The obtained sequences were compared with rough-toothed dolphin haplotypes previously published in NCBI (N=70), from the Atlantic, Indian, and the Pacific Oceans. Results: Our findings showed significant population structure among ocean basins (strong differentiation with ΦST data), and high genetic diversity within each phylogroup. Only the Atlantic Ocean showed high genetic differentiation within the basin, detecting three phylogroups: the Caribbean, northern, and southern Atlantic. Conclusions: These findings support previous genetic studies that indicate high levels of population structure among ocean basins, although this species seems to be widely dispersed. However, samples from Panama and the Caribbean appear to show connectivity between highly differentiated Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Therefore, our results highlight the need for more research to assess the rough-toothed dolphin genetic and population status in Central America, as the piece of the puzzle needed to clarify its taxonomy and genetic differentiation worldwide. This information is needed due to the rough-toothed dolphin IUCN categorization as "Least Concern" and its classification into appendix II according to CITES. To better understand bacterial communities and metabolism under nitrogen deficiency, 154 seawater samples were obtained from 5 to 200 m at 22 stations in the photic zone of the Western North Pacific Ocean. Total 634 nitrate-utilizing bacteria were isolated using selective media and culture-dependent methods, and 295 of them were positive for nitrate reduction. These nitrate-reducing bacteria belonged to 19 genera and 29 species and among them, Qipengyuania flava, Roseibium aggregatum, Erythrobacter aureus, Vibrio campbellii, and Stappia indica were identified from all tested seawater layers of the photic zone and at almost all stations. Twenty-nine nitrate-reducing strains representing different species were selected for further the study of nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon metabolism. All 29 nitrate-reducing isolates contained genes encoding dissimilatory nitrate reduction or assimilatory nitrate reduction. Six nitrate-reducing isolates can oxidize thiosulfate based on genomic analysis and activity testing, indicating that nitrate-reducing thiosulfate-oxidizing bacteria exist in the photic zone. Five nitrate-reducing isolates obtained near the chlorophyll a-maximum layer contained a dimethylsulfoniopropionate synthesis gene and three of them contained both dimethylsulfoniopropionate synthesis and cleavage genes. This suggests that nitrate-reducing isolates may participate in dimethylsulfoniopropionate synthesis and catabolism in photic seawater. The presence of multiple genes for chitin degradation and extracellular peptidases may indicate that almost all nitrate-reducing isolates (28/29) can use chitin and proteinaceous compounds as important sources of carbon and nitrogen. Collectively, these results reveal culturable nitrate-reducing bacterial diversity and have implications for understanding the role of such strains in the ecology and biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon in the oligotrophic marine photic zone. Four specimens (151-156 mm in standard length) of Beryx mollis Abe, 1959 were collected from the Nazca Ridge, southeastern Pacific Ocean. These specimens represent the first record of the species from the southeastern Pacific Ocean and extend the distributional range of the species eastward by ca. 10,000 km from New Caledonia, the previously known eastern limit. The 2022 January 15 Hunga–Tonga submarine volcanic eruption was unprecedented in the modern era for its size, in terms of its plume height and atmospheric waves, including sound. Global seismic stations recorded maximal radiated energy during 30 min of the plume-forming phase of the eruption (04:00 to 04:30 UTC), with the largest subevents occurring over a 5-min interval starting at 04:15:17 UTC. Here, we consider two simple point-source models—force and moment tensor—and separately consider the single main subevent and the sequence of four subevents. Estimation of source models for the first subevent in the sequence is achieved with a complete search of model parameter space to find the global minimum of a waveform misfit function (body or surface waves). We performed 25 runs to explore the impact of depth, source model (force or moment tensor), wave type (body or surface), and component (vertical, radial, and transverse) on the waveform fits and estimated best-fitting source. Visualization of the misfit function reveals complex trade-offs among model parameters, highlighting the importance of characterizing uncertainties and parameter trade-offs. The four-subevent source model has up to 28 model parameters and requires an efficient search algorithm to find the best-fitting source. For this, we use the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy implemented on a high-performance computing cluster. The 10 four-subevent runs for each source model return sequences of subvertical downward forces and explosive-like moment tensors for each subevent. Our results show that these two simple source models provide comparable fits to regional and global seismic waveforms and that the source types for each subevent—either force direction or moment tensor source type on the eigenvalue lune—are similar enough to each other to consider that the subevents originate from the same process. Our estimation of the source mechanisms, sizes, and relative timing should benefit a physical interpretation of the eruption sequence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2,4,6-Tripyridine-s-triazine (TPTZ) spectrophotometric method was applied to determine the concentrations of dissolved monosaccharides (MCHO), polysaccharides (PCHO), and total carbohydrate (TCHO) in seawater samples collected from sea surface to hadal zone and sediment-seawater interface of the Southern Yap Trench in the Western Pacific Ocean. Results show that the concentrations of MCHO, PCHO, and TCHO ranged from 6.3 to 22.3 µmol C/L, 1.1 to 25.4 µmol C/L, and 12.1 to 44.9 µmol C/L, respectively, from the euphotic layer to the hadal zone of the trench. At different sampling stations, the concentrations of MCHO, PCHO, and TCHO in the seawater showed complex vertical variation characteristics, but the overall variation trends were decreasing with water depth. In the Southern Yap Trench, the maximum concentration of MCHO in the seawater appeared in the euphotic layer, and the minimum in the hadal zone. The maximum concentration of PCHO appeared in the euphotic layer, and the minimum in the bathypelagic layer. The water layer where the maxima and minima of the average concentration of TCHO appeared was consistent with that of PCHO. PCHO was the major component of TCHO in the seawater of the Southern Yap Trench. In the seawater from the sediment-seawater interface, the concentrations of MCHO, PCHO, and TCHO ranged from 8.4 to 10.6 µmol C/L, 3.8 to 5.8 µmol C/L, and 12.2 to 15.2 µmol C/L, respectively, and MCHO was the major component of TCHO. The key factors affecting the concentration and existing forms of dissolved sugars in the seawater of the Southern Yap Trench included photosynthesis, respiration, polysaccharide hydrolysis, adsorption and desorption of particulate matter, trench "funnel effect", deep ocean currents, sediment resuspension, and etc. This study provided fundamental data about labile organic matter in abyss and hadal zone of marine environment, which is significant for further understanding of deep-sea organic carbon cycle. Acanthophora spicifera, a red alga considered an alien species, was discovered for the first time on the Pacific coast of Mexico in 2006 from a locality inside La Paz Bay, Gulf of California. Since then, more records have shown its presence, 17 localities having been added up to 2015. A two-year field study (2020-2022) visiting 31 sites along the coast of La Paz Bay, complemented with data from literature and citizen science, resulted in a database of 709 entries that spans the data from 2004 to 2023. These data showed a distribution that goes from Punta Coyote, close to Boca Grande, the northern entrance to the Bay to Playa Tecolote in the south, more than 100 km of coastline, including Espiritu Santo Archipelago, an area considered a natural reserve since 2007. Anthropogenic activity and environmental variables did not present statistical differences that explain A. spicifera spreading. It represents a naturalised alien species without evidence of a negative impact. Still, it soon could acquire the status of invasive species together with its epibionts Bryozoa and Hydrozoa detected in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diversity of the brown algal genus Sargassum C.Agardh in the Philippines is the highest in the tropical western Pacific Ocean. However, most studies on Philippine Sargassum are based on morphoanatomies and the assumption that the genus is very diverse in the country has never been tested based on molecular information. Considering that many Sargassum species are highly polymorphic and the recent advance on Sargassum systematics facilitated by molecular phylogenetic studies, we believe that the species of Sargassum from the Philippines should now be reassessed with the tools of molecular taxonomy. We present here the results of our molecular-assisted taxonomic studies on the Sargassum of the northern Philippines, particularly along the coasts of four coastal provinces in northwestern Luzon (i.e., Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan). We recognized three distinct species lineages, namely, Sargassum aquifolium (Turner) C.Agardh, Sargassum ilicifolium (Turner) C.Agardh, and Sargassum polycystum C.Agardh based on our molecular analyses of 74 specimens from our study areas. Our morphological observations on the range of characters of these species also suggest that several common Sargassum taxa in the Philippines have been misidentified. Particularly, specimens previously attributed to S. kushimotense Yendo should be referred as S. aquifolium while the widely distributed and highly plastic S. ilicifolium is often confused and identified in the Philippines under several names including S. crassifolium J.Agardh, S. cristaefolium C.Agardh, and S. turbinarioides Grunow. Taken together, our results suggest that Sargassum biodiversity in the Philippines may have been inflated by misidentifications, and, that species diversity is actually much lower than initially thought. Cependant, la plupart des études sur les Sargassum des Philippines sont basées sur de la morpho-anatomie, et l'hypothèse selon laquelle le genre est très diversifié dans le pays n'a jamais été vérifiée sur la base d'informations moléculaires. Étant donné que de nombreuses espèces de Sargassum sont hautement polymorphiques et que les études phylogénétiques moléculaires ont récemment permis de faire progresser la systématique, nous pensons que les espèces de Sargassum des Philippines devraient maintenant être réévaluées au moyen d'outils de la taxonomie moléculaire. Currents have a significant impact on wave parameters around islands. In this study, high-resolution unsteady current simulations based on island geography and wind fields from Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model are used as input sources. The wave action balance model uses an unstructured grid to assess the wave conditions in the Atoll during Typhoon Noul. The characteristic wave parameters, with and without the effect of currents, are compared with the field observation data, including significant wave height, wave period, and the spatial distribution of significant wave height. The results show that simulated significant wave heights and wave periods are close to observed data, considering the effect of currents. The energy and shape of the spectrum are also verified during Typhoon Noul, and the observed agreement is improved when considering the currents. The effects of current within the Atoll are relatively weaker compared to the surroundings, while stronger current effects are observed in the deeper water outside the Atoll. Refraction caused by current expands the area of moderate sea state behind the island. Significance Statement: Several innovations of this article are as follows: 1) the influence of currents on wave conditions at the Atoll; 2) exploring the impact of currents using key parameters, such as significant wave height, wave period, and wave spectrum, especially during the passage of Typhoon Noul; 3) swell emerges as the dominant factor influencing wave conditions as the center of Typhoon Noul gradually moves away; and 4) refraction caused by current expands the area of moderate sea state behind the island. The equatorial cold tongue in the Pacific Ocean has been intensely studied during the last decades as it plays an important role in air--sea interactions and climate issues. Recently, Warner et al. revealed gravity currents apparently originating in tropical instability waves. Both phenomena have strong dissipation rates and were considered to play a significant role in cascading energy from the mesoscale to smaller horizontal scales, as well as to vertical scales less than 1 m. Here, we present Sentinel-3 satellite observations of internal solitary waves (ISWs) in the Pacific cold tongue near the equator, in a zonal band stretching from 2108 to 2658E, away from any steep bottom topography. Within this band these waves propagate in multiple directions. Some of the waves' characteristics, such as the distance between wave crests, crest lengths, and time scales, are estimated from satellite observations. In total we identify 116 ISW trains during one full year (2020), with typical distances between crests of 1500 m and crest lengths of hundreds of kilometers. These ISW trains appear to be generated by buoyant gravity currents having sharp fronts detectable in thermal infrared satellite images. A 2D numerical model confirms that resonantly generated nonlinear internal waves with amplitudes of O(10) m may be continuously initiated at the fronts of advancing gravity currents. Man-made debris is a global problem for seabirds because it is ingested by many species. Markham's Storm Petrel Hydrobates markhami, which breeds in the Atacama Desert and is endemic to the Humboldt Current in the eastern South Pacific, has been poorly studied in this regard. Earlier studies found low levels of man-made debris in the species' diet. We quantified the present-day frequency-occurrence of man-made debris in fledglings and adults of Markham's Storm Petrel in Chile. We found that 16 of 25 fledglings and all adults contained man-made debris in their digestive tract, indicating the prevalence of man-made debris in this species' diet is higher than previously reported. This essay tries to explain the reasons why the geopolitical concept of the "Indo-Pacific" has gradually replaced the previous one of the "Asia-Pacific". Three fundamental facts are in the origin of the new geopolitical construct; the rise of an increasingly assertive China that is perceived as a potential threat by most of its neighbours; the emergence of India as a regional power and a potential balancer of the Chinese colossus, and finally the growing importance of the sea lanes of communication (SLOCs) between the Indian and the Pacific Ocean in the world economy and geostrategy. After some geographical and historical considerations, we will examine the academic elaboration of the concept and its gradual assumption by the political actors within and outside the region. We will also briefly describe the strategies of the main states and regional organizations involved, and finally we will refer to the main conflict hotspots in this huge maritime and continental space that may become the world's geopolitical axis in the present century. Studies of oceanic crust, which covers a large proportion of the Earth's surface, have provided significant insight into the dynamics of crustal accretion processes at mid‐ocean ridges. It is now recognized that the nature of oceanic crust varies fundamentally as a function of spreading rate. Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 1256D (eastern Pacific Ocean) was drilled into the crust formed at a superfast spreading rate, and hence represents a crustal end member. Drilling recovered a section through lava and sheeted dykes and into the plutonic sequence, the study of which has yielded abundant insight into magmatic and hydrothermal processes operating at high spreading rates. Here, we present zircon U‐Pb dates for Hole 1256D, which constrain the age of the section, as well as the duration of crustal accretion. We find that the main pulse of zircon crystallization within plutonic rocks occurred at 15.19 Ma, consistent with magnetic anomalies, and lasted tens of thousands of years. During this episode, the main plutonic body intruded, and partial melts of the base of the sheeted dykes crystallized. One sample appears to postdate this episode by up to 0.25 Myr, and may be an off‐axis intrusion. Overall, the duration of crustal accretion was tens to several hundreds of thousands of years, similar to that found at the fast‐spreading East Pacific Rise and the slow‐spreading Mid‐Atlantic Ridge. This indicates that crustal accretion along slow‐ to superfast‐spreading ridges occurs over similar time scales, with substantially longer periods of accretion occurring at ultraslow‐spreading ridges characterized by thick lithosphere. Plain Language Summary: The oceanic crust paves approximately 2/3 of the Earth's surface. It is formed at mid‐ocean ridges, where tectonic plates separate and new crust is formed by the solidification of magma. This magma is formed by partial melting of the upper mantle beneath the ridge axis. Plates spread at different rates at different mid‐ocean ridges, and the fastest‐known spreading occurred some 11–18 million years ago in the eastern Equatorial Pacific. A section of the crust formed during this episode of superfast‐spreading was recovered by scientific drilling in the framework of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). This study presents age data that determine when this section of superfast‐spreading crust formed, and how long it took to build the crust. We find that the age of the section is 15.19 Ma, and that crustal formation lasted between tens and several hundreds of thousands of years. This duration is similar to that found at mid‐ocean ridges with slow‐ to fast‐spreading rates, such as the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge and East Pacific Rise. However, it is much shorter than the formation of crust at ultraslow‐spreading ridges, where the cool and thick nature of the lithosphere leads to prolonged episodes of crustal formation. Tropical cyclogenesis in the Atlantic is influenced by environmental parameters including vertical wind shear, which is sensitive to forcing from the tropical Pacific. Reliable projections of the response of such parameters to radiative forcing are key to understanding the future of hurricanes and coastal risk. One of the least certain aspects of future climate is the warming of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Using climate model experiments isolating the warming of the eastern Pacific and controlling for other factors including El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO), changes in Atlantic tropical cyclogenesis potential by the end of this century are ∼20% lower with enhanced eastern Pacific warming. The ENSO signal in Atlantic tropical cyclogenesis potential amplifies with global warming, and that amplification is larger with enhanced eastern Pacific warming. The largest changes and dependencies on eastern Pacific warming are found in the south‐central main development region, attributable to changes in zonal overturning. Plain Language Summary: Today, there are about 15 tropical storms per year in the Atlantic. That number varies considerably from year to year, with El Niño being one major factor. When the eastern Pacific Ocean warms temporarily, Atlantic hurricanes tend to be suppressed (and vice versa for La Niña). As the climate warms due to greenhouse gas emissions, hurricanes are expected to change. Such changes could include the average number of tropical storms per year, where they tend to form, how strong they become, how far and fast they travel, how much rain they produce, and how El Niño affects them. This study investigates how the formation regions of Atlantic hurricanes may change in the future, particularly as a function of how much the eastern Pacific Ocean warms in the future, which is one of the most uncertain aspects of climate change. We find that the warming of the eastern Pacific strongly influences predictions of future changes in Atlantic hurricanes, including how El Niño affects them. Specifically, a strong eastern Pacific warming causes a change in the winds over the tropical Atlantic, which shifts where hurricanes will tend to form in the future, and increases the effect of El Niño. The OIB-type volcanic rocks of Govorov Guyot in Magellan Seamounts (Pacific Ocean) include basalts, trachybasalts, basaltic trachyandesites, and trachyandesites dated by the 40Ar-39Ar plateau from 121 ± 2.8 to 98.5 ± 1.4 Ma. Some rocks bear amphibole-spinel wehrlite xenoliths and clinopyroxene-amphibole (Cpx-Amp) mantle vein fragments in xenoliths and xenocrysts, which are remnants of metasomatized oceanic lithosphere. The pressure and temperature crystallization for pargasitic amphibole were the highest (1170–1130°C and 2.5–1.6 GPa, 73–53 km depth) in wehrlite peridotite and the lowest (1.6–1.1 GPa, shallower than 52 km, and 1070–980°C) in Cpx-Amp metasomatic mantle veins. Ti-bearing Amp phenocrysts and microlites crystallized from the parent melts of basaltic rocks at 1060–910°C and 1.2–0.4 GPa (40–15 km). The ascending basaltic melts lost H2O from 8.6 ± 1.2 to 2.6 ± 0.4 wt% upon decompression. Amphibole mantle xenocrysts became replaced by Ti-magnetite- and rhönite-bearing mineral assemblages in intermediate magma chambers within oceanic crust (3–7 km). Pargasitic Amp in wehrlite and metasomatic mantle veins may have crystallized at different depths from hydrous (6–4.5 ± 0.7 wt% H2O) mafic melts that percolated through peridotite. The sources of heat and metasomatic agents (silicate melts and/or fluids enriched in volatiles) most likely had no relation to the Pacific Plate subduction but may be associated with the Southern Pacific Superplume in the South Pacific Thermal and Isotopic Anomaly region, or may be located at the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary (LAB) level in the plume absence. Repeated events of Cretaceous intraplate volcanism in the Magellan guyots can be explained in terms of plume (hotspot) activity or decompression partial melting of enriched or metasomatized asthenosphere and/or metasomatized oceanic lithosphere caused by Pacific Plate deformation and fracturing from the LAB level. While populations of other migratory salmonids suffer in the Anthropocene, pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbusca Salmonidae) are thriving, and their distribution is expanding both within their natural range and in the Atlantic and Arctic following introduction of the species to the White Sea in the 1950s. Pink salmon are now rapidly spreading in Europe and even across the ocean to North America. Large numbers of pink salmon breed in Norwegian rivers and small numbers of individuals have been captured throughout the North Atlantic since 2017. Although little is known about the biology and ecology of the pink salmon in its novel distribution, the impacts of the species' introduction are potentially highly significant for native species and watershed productivity. Contrasts between pink salmon in the native and extended ranges will be key to navigating management strategies for Atlantic nations where the pink salmon is entrenching itself among the fish fauna, posing potential threats to native fish communities. One key conclusion of this paper is that the species' heritable traits are rapidly selected and drive local adaptation and evolution. Within the Atlantic region, this may facilitate further establishment and spread. The invasion of pink salmon in the Atlantic basin is ultimately a massive ecological experiment and one of the first examples of a major faunal change in the North Atlantic Ocean that is already undergoing rapid changes due to other anthropogenic stressors. This study investigates the physical mechanisms responsible for the impacts of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) on the evolution of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), with a focus on understanding the monsoon-induced Pacific air–sea interactive processes. An observational analysis displays that a weaker-than-normal ISM can strengthen an ongoing El Niño event and weaken a La Niña event, and conversely for a stronger-than-normal ISM. A 1000-yr output from the Community Earth System Model version 2 is capable of reproducing this observed feature and is therefore used to explore the responsible ocean–atmosphere interactive processes involved. Results show that a weak ISM can cause a cyclonic circulation over the western North Pacific via stimulating atmospheric cold Kelvin waves, and conversely for a strong ISM. The westerly (easterly) wind anomalies on the southern flank of the anomalous cyclone (anticyclone) generate eastward (westward) current anomalies in the mixed layer and thus induce anomalous warm (cold) zonal advection. Furthermore, the wind anomalies excite oceanic downwelling (upwelling) Kelvin waves, which deepen (shoal) the thermocline in the equatorial eastern Pacific and result in anomalous warm (cold) vertical advection. A quantitative mixed layer heat budget analysis demonstrates that the influence of the monsoon-induced Pacific wind anomalies on ENSO is mainly achieved by changing the zonal advective feedback and thermocline feedback. This result is confirmed by model sensitivity experiments in which additional monsoon heating or cooling anomalies are imposed over the Indian region during the developing summer of an ENSO event. Significance Statement: While previous studies have reported that the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) could influence the evolution of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), this study is aimed at understanding the physical mechanisms for the Pacific air–sea interactive processes induced by the monsoon and their impact on ENSO. It is found that a weak and strong ISM can respectively induce an anomalous cyclonic and anticyclonic circulation over the western North Pacific. The wind anomalies on the southern flank of the anomalous circulation mainly change the zonal advective feedback and the thermocline feedback to affect ENSO development. Understanding the reproductive characteristics of a species is of crucial for accurate stock assessment and management plans to ensure sustainable fisheries. In this study, the size at 50% sexual maturity (L50) parameters in different bio-ecological provinces were estimated for bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus, sampled from the Eastern Pacific Ocean tuna fisheries-dependent survey from 2013 to 2019. The overall sex ratio of the catch during the sampling differed significantly from 1:1. Bigeye tuna exhibit sexual dimorphism in the growth of males and females, with a clear shift in predominance from female to male with increasing sizes. In the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (east) (NPST-east), North Pacific Tropical Gyre (NPTG), Pacific North Equatorial Countercurrent (PNEC), and Pacific Equatorial Divergence (PEQD), females (meals) reached sexual maturity round 102 cm (106 cm), 106 cm (100 cm), 125 cm (110 cm), and 113 cm (110 cm), respectively, the estimated L50 of bigeye tuna was 124.08 cm, 121.97 cm, 139.92 cm and 132.45 cm, respectively. The degree of populations mixing between equatorial (PNEC and PEQD) and high-latitude regions (NPST-east and NPTG) is extremely small, but it is reasonably high between the NPST-east and NPTG or PNEC and PEQD. These parameters were significantly different, suggesting the occurrence of a spatial difference in the size-at-maturity of bigeye tuna between these bio-ecological provinces. The findings of this study provide the key information for understanding the life history of bigeye tuna in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and will contribute to the conservation and sustainable yield of this species. Perspectives on past climate using lake sediments are critical for assessing modern and future climate change. These perspectives are especially important for water-stressed regions such as the western United States. One such region is northwestern California (CA), where Holocene-length hydroclimatic records are scarce. Here, we present a 9000-year, relative lake level record from Maddox Lake (CA) using a multi-indicator approach. The Early Holocene is characterized by variably low lake levels with a brief excursion to wetter climates/ relative highstand ca. 8.4-8.06 cal ka BP, possibly related to the 8.2 ka cold event and changing Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). From 5.2-0.55 cal ka BP, Maddox Lake experienced a long-term regression, tracking changes in summer-winter insolation, tropical and northeast Pacific SSTs, and the southward migration of the ITCZ. This gradual regression culminated in a pronounced relative lowstand during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA). A marked relative highstand followed the MCA, correlative to the Little Ice Age. The latter reflects a far-field response to North Atlantic volcanism, solar variability, and possibly changes in AMOC and Arctic sea ice extent. Our results further confirm the hydroclimatic sensitivity of northwest California to various forcings including those emanating from the North Atlantic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article considers the haunting presence of the Pacific Ocean in two films about Southern Chile that respond to the aftermath of the Pinochet dictatorship (1973–90). I build from the premise that the heterogeneous materiality of landscapes can provoke reflection on multiple entangled histories, memories and hauntings, potentially enabling a counter-hegemonic form of historiography. Water itself is rarely analysed as ghostly matter. Its liquid materiality resists the emplacing of memorials or the accumulation of human-made debris. And yet, in the documentary El Botón de Nácar (The Pearl Button) (2015) and the narrative film La Frontera (The Frontier) (1991), water is the agglutinating presence that places different pasts in dialogue. Through my analysis, I explore the films' engagement with the complex temporalities and cultural connotations of the ocean in Southern Chile – the cyclical movement of tides, the inevitability of catastrophic tsunamis and the enduring currents between islands that are invisible to the tourist gaze. I argue that in engaging with these temporalities, the films open alternate ways of thinking about time, history, truth and justice in the Chilean 'transition to democracy'. This disruption makes room for histories of Indigenous survival, transnational solidarity, natural disaster and ecological destruction that are often absent or erased from postdictatorship memory culture. Reef islands are considered highly vulnerable to the impacts of anthropogenic climate change. While existing studies provide evidence of high dynamism and predominant stability over recent periods of sea-level rise, efforts to statistically link recorded morphological changes to processes are limited. We analyse shoreline changes across an expansive region of diverse oceanographic and climatic conditions and assess those observations relative to the processes potentially driving change. This record comprises 568 islands from 42 atolls spanning the western to the central Pacific Ocean from the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Tuvalu, and is one of the first robust attempts to statistically attribute the drivers of observed island changes within the past half-century. Our analyses demonstrate that island change and a range of its potential controls, including oceanographic, climatic and local-scale morphometric characteristics of reefs and islands, are not correlated, underscoring that no single variable could predict a uniform response across the study islands. The lack of association between sea-level rise and shoreline change on this large sample of islands addresses the common notion of a linear relationship between rising sea levels and magnitude of erosion in reef island systems. We emphasise the critical need to move from simplistic assessments of island change, highlight the importance of incorporating multiple predictors and the need for more computationally robust models. Hawksbill turtles (n = 56) in a foraging ground around Isla San Jose, Gulf of California, Mexico, were caught, measured, and their skin and scutes sampled. Tissue samples from putative prey species were collected from observed hawksbill feeding areas in the foraging ground.Measurements of each turtle's straight carapace length were used to estimate the average life stage of the population. Tissue samples were processed for stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis to estimate foraging habits of turtles in this location.The majority (96.4%) of measured individuals' straight carapace length fell in the size range considered to be juveniles.A Bayesian mixing model analysis of the δ13C and δ15N values of hawksbill skin and potential prey indicated that hawksbills consume primarily invertebrates and algae, with lesser contributions from seagrass and mangrove material.There was a positive linear relationship between turtle size and the δ13C values from scute samples, and an increase in the δ13C values of five individuals recaptured in subsequent years suggested a potential location shift from a pelagic habitat in the turtles' post‐hatching, earliest juvenile years to the nearshore foraging area around Isla San Jose in their later juvenile years. The symbiotic cyanobacterium UCYN-A is one of the most globally abundant marine dinitrogen (N2 )-fixers, but cultures have not been available and its biology and ecology are poorly understood. We used cultivation-independent approaches to investigate how UCYN-A single-cell N2 fixation rates (NFRs) and nifH gene expression vary as a function of depth and photoperiod. Twelve-hour day/night incubations showed that UCYN-A only fixed N2 during the day. Experiments conducted using in situ arrays showed a light-dependence of NFRs by the UCYN-A symbiosis, with the highest rates in surface waters (5-45 m) and lower rates at depth (≥ 75 m). Analysis of NFRs versus in situ light intensity yielded a light saturation parameter (Ik ) for UCYN-A of 44 μmol quanta m-2  s-1 . This is low compared with other marine diazotrophs, suggesting an ecological advantage for the UCYN-A symbiosis under low-light conditions. In contrast to cell-specific NFRs, nifH gene-specific expression levels did not vary with depth, indicating that light regulates N2 fixation by UCYN-A through processes other than transcription, likely including host-symbiont interactions. These results offer new insights into the physiology of the UCYN-A symbiosis in the subtropical North Pacific Ocean and provide clues to the environmental drivers of its global distributions.

SUMMARY The Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) laser altimetry mission, launched in September 2018, uses six parallel lidar tracks with very fine along-track resolution (15 m) to measure the topography of ice, land and ocean surfaces. Here we assess the ability of ICESat-2 ocean data to recover oceanographic signals ranging from surface gravity waves to the marine geoid. We focus on a region in the tropical Pacific and study photon height data in both the wavenumber and space domain. Results show that an ICESat-2 single track can recover the marine geoid at wavelengths >20 km which is similar to the best radar altimeter data. The wavelength and propagation direction of surface gravity waves are sometimes well resolved by using a combination of the strong and weak beams, which are separated by 90 m. We find higher than expected power in the 3–20 km wavelength band where geoid and ocean signals should be small. This artificial power is caused by the projection of 2-D surface waves with ∼300 m wavelengths into longer wavelengths (5–10 km) because of the 1-D sampling along the narrow ICESat-2 profile. Thus ICESat-2 will not provide major improvements to the geoid recovery in most of the ocean.
