154. Phonetic imitation from an individual-difference perspective: subjective attitude, personality and 'autistic' traits.

Abstract

Numerous studies have documented the phenomenon of phonetic imitation: the process by which the production patterns of an individual become more similar on some phonetic or acoustic dimension to those of her interlocutor. Though social factors have been suggested as a motivator for imitation, few studies has established a tight connection between language-external factors and a speaker's likelihood to imitate. The present study investigated the phenomenon of phonetic imitation using a within-subject design embedded in an individual-differences framework. Participants were administered a phonetic imitation task, which included two speech production tasks separated by a perceptual learning task, and a battery of measures assessing traits associated with Autism-Spectrum Condition, working memory, and personality. To examine the effects of subjective attitude on phonetic imitation, participants were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions, where the perceived sexual orientation of the narrator (homosexual vs. heterosexual) and the outcome (positive vs. negative) of the story depicted in the exposure materials differed. The extent of phonetic imitation by an individual is significantly modulated by the story outcome, as well as by the participant's subjective attitude toward the model talker, the participant's personality trait of openness and the autistic-like trait associated with attention switching.

Abstract

BackgroundCoronary artery disease (CAD) shares common risk factors with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Variations in the transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene, particularly rs7903146, increase T2DM risk. Potential links between genetic variants of the TCF7L2 locus and coronary atherosclerosis are uncertain. We therefore investigated the association between TCF7L2 polymorphisms and angiographically determined CAD in diabetic and non-diabetic patients.Methodology/principal findingsWe genotyped TCF7L2 variants rs7903146, rs12255372, and rs11196205 in a cross-sectional study including 1,650 consecutive patients undergoing coronary angiography for the evaluation of established or suspected stable CAD. Significant CAD was diagnosed in the presence of coronary stenoses ≥50%. Variant rs7903146 in the total study cohort was significantly associated with significant CAD (adjusted additive OR = 1.29 [1.09-1.53]; p = 0.003). This association was strong and significant in T2DM patients (n = 393; OR = 1.91 [1.32-2.75]; p = 0.001) but not in non-diabetic subjects (OR = 1.09 [0.90-1.33]; p = 0.370). The interaction risk allele by T2DM was significant (p(interaction) = 0.002), indicating a significantly stronger impact of the polymorphism on CAD in T2DM patients than in non-diabetic subjects. TCF7L2 polymorphisms rs12255372 and rs11196205 were also significantly associated with CAD in diabetic patients (adjusted additive OR = 1.90 [1.31-2.74]; p = 0.001 and OR = 1.75 [1.22-2.50]; p = 0.002, respectively). Further, haplotype analysis demonstrated that haplotypes including the rare alleles of all investigated variants were significantly associated with CAD in the whole cohort as well as in diabetic subjects (OR = 1.22 [1.04-1.43]; p = 0.013 and OR = 1.67 [1.19-2.22]; p = 0.003, respectively).Conclusions/significanceThese results suggest that TCF7L2 variants rs7903146 rs12255372, and rs11196205 are significantly associated with angiographically diagnosed CAD, specifically in patients with T2DM. TCF7L2 therefore appears as a genetic link between diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Abstract

Plate osteosynthesis is one treatment option for the stabilization of long bones. It is widely accepted to achieve bone healing with a dynamic and biological fixation where the perfusion of the bone is left intact and micromotion at the fracture gap is allowed. The indications for a dynamic plate osteosynthesis include distal tibial and femoral fractures, some midshaft fractures, and adolescent tibial and femoral fractures with not fully closed growth plates. Although many lower limb shaft fractures are managed successfully with intramedullary nails, there are some important advantages of open-reduction-and-plate fixation: the risk of malalignment, anterior knee pain, or nonunion seems to be lower. The surgeon performing a plate osteosynthesis has the possibility to influence fixation strength and micromotion at the fracture gap. Long plates and oblique screws at the plate ends increase fixation strength. However, the number of screws does influence stiffness and stability. Lag screws and screws close to the fracture site reduce micromotion dramatically. Dynamic plate osteosynthesis can be achieved by applying some simple rules: long plates with only a few screws should be used. Oblique screws at the plate ends increase the pullout strength. Two or three holes at the fracture site should be omitted. Lag screws, especially through the plate, must be avoided whenever possible. Compression is not required. Locking plates are recommended only in fractures close to the joint. When respecting these basic concepts, dynamic plate osteosynthesis is a safe procedure with a high healing and a low complication rate.

Abstract

BackgroundCarriage of Neisseria meningitidis occurs approximately in 10% of the population, onset of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cannot be predicted and differs between ages. It remains unclear, which host factors determine invasion of the bloodstream by the bacteria. Innate immunity has a very important role in the first recognition of invading pathogens. The functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) CD14 C-159T and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) Asp299Gly have been associated with the risk of gram-negative infections. However, their role in development of IMD still remains unclear. Our aim was to investigate the influence of CD14 C-159T and TLR4 Asp299Gly polymorphisms on the risk of IMD.Methodology/principal findingsIt was a retrospective case control study. Surviving Austrian meningococcal disease patients were enrolled by sending buccal swabs for DNA analysis. 185 cases with a proven meningococcal infection and 770 healthy controls were enrolled. In surviving meningococcal disease patients DNA analysis of CD14 C-159T and TLR 4 Asp299Gly polymorphisms was performed, as they are part of the innate immune response to bacterial determinants. CD14 C-159T and TLR4 Asp299Gly SNPs were not significantly associated with the presence of IMD when compared to healthy controls. The odds ratio for CD14 C-159T SNP was 1.14 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.91-1.43; p = 0.266). In TLR4 Asp 299 Gly SNP the odds ratio was 0.78 (CI 0.47-1.43; p = 0.359).Conclusion/significanceWe could not observe a significant influence of CD14 C-159T and TLR4 Asp299Gly polymorphisms on the risk of developing IMD in surviving meningococcal disease patients. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the influence of the CD14 C-159T SNP on the susceptibility to IMD.

182. Cost-effectiveness analysis of carbetocin versus oxytocin for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage following vaginal birth in the United Kingdom

AbstractAimsTo assess the cost-effectiveness of carbetocin versus oxytocin for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) following vaginal birth from the perspective of the UK National Health Service (NHS).Materials and methodsA decision tree model was designed to analyze the cost per PPH event avoided associated with utilizing carbetocin versus oxytocin for prophylactic treatment of PPH in women following vaginal birth from a UK perspective. It modelled the potential for women to require an additional uterotonic after prophylaxis, and to still experience a PPH event and receive associated treatment. Inpatient recovery and follow-up periods post-PPH were also included in the model. Costs associated with drug acquisition and administration, PPH management (i.e. additional staffing and possible operating theater and high dependency unit utilization), inpatient hospitalization, and follow-up visits were all considered. Adverse event management costs were not included. Resource utilization varied depending on the severity of the PPH event (as defined by the amount of blood lost). PPH events avoided were estimated. In an exploratory analysis, quality adjusted life years (QALYs) were estimated as well.ResultsIn the deterministic base case, costs were £55 lower and PPH events were 0.0342 lower per woman with carbetocin use compared to oxytocin use. Across the cohort of 100 women the reduction in PPH events led to the largest cost savings (£4,233 saved) out of all cost categories, with total cost savings of £5,495. Carbetocin utilization amongst the entire cohort led to 3.42 avoided PPH events compared to oxytocin utilization, comprised of 3.03 fewer mild/moderate PPH events and 0.39 fewer severe PPH events. Carbetocin utilization led to 0.0001 additional QALYs per woman.ConclusionCarbetocin utilization leads to lower prophylactic treatment costs and less PPH events versus oxytocin when utilized for the prevention of PPH following vaginal birth in the UK.

SummaryThe MDC-model (Microstructural Dislocation Creep – model) is an advanced approach incorporating numerous creep mechanisms in complex alloys. It leads to a differential equation system that cannot be solved in a closed algebraic form. Also, some parameters of these equations cannot be measured directly. The application CreeSo (from ‘Creep Software’) helps finding numerical solutions of this model and it can also help determining missing parameters by comparing simulated with experimental creep curves. CreeSo is not limited to the MDC-model but open to any model formulated in its script language. The application is written in C++ and JavaScript and it will be available as a desktop version for MS-Windows and as an online version for web browsers.

Abstract

Like a love affair that has grown cold, Bruce Marshall has lost his affection and loyalty to Karl Barth. The reasons are complex, intellectual, and personal, and certainly, exceed the reasons proposed in this essay. Several are proposed all the same: that Marshall considers proper Nicene theology to consist in answers; that the reading of Holy Scripture that inspired Barth is not plausible or consistent with Marshall's doctrinal commitments; and that the Doctrines of God and of Salvation do not readily cohere with Catholic magisterial teaching. Barth can however be defended against these charges, drawing on his Doctrine of Justification as an epistemic as well as Soteriological teaching, and his strong notion of corporate existence in the redeeming work of Christ.

Abstract

The NA60 experiment has studied low-mass muon pair production in proton–nucleus collisions with a system of Be, Cu, In, W, Pb and U targets, using a 400 GeV proton beam at the CERN SPS. The transverse momentum spectra of the $$\rho /\omega $$ ρ/ω and $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons are measured in the full $$p_{\mathrm {T}}$$ pT range accessible, from $$p_{\mathrm {T}}= 0$$ pT=0 up to $$2 \, {\hbox {GeV/c}}$$ 2GeV/c . The nuclear dependence of the production cross sections of the $$\eta $$ η , $$\omega $$ ω and $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons has been found to be consistent with the power law $$\sigma _{\mathrm {pA}} \propto {\mathrm {A}}^\alpha $$ σpA∝Aα , with the $$\alpha $$ α parameter increasing as a function of $$p_{\mathrm {T}}$$ pT for all the particles, and an approximate hierarchy $$\alpha _\eta \approx \alpha _\phi > \alpha _\omega $$ αη≈αϕ>αω . The cross section ratios $$\sigma _\eta /\sigma _\omega $$ ση/σω , $$\sigma _\rho /\sigma _\omega $$ σρ/σω and $$\sigma _\phi /\sigma _\omega $$ σϕ/σω have been studied as a function of the size A of the production target, and an increase of the $$\eta $$ η and $$\phi $$ ϕ yields relative to the $$\omega $$ ω is observed from p–Be to p–U collisions.
