About a hundred years ago, the Russian biologist A. Gurwitsch, based on experiments with onion plants by measuring their growth rate, hypothesized that plants emit a weak electromagnetic field that somehow influences cell growth. This interesting observation remained fundamentally ignored by the scientific community; only in the 1950s the electromagnetic emission from some plants was measured using a photomultiplier used in single counting mode. Later, in the 1980s, several groups around the world started extensive work to understand the origin and role of this ultraweak emission, now called biophotons, coming from living organisms. Biophotons are an endogenous very small production of photons in the visible energy range in and from cells and organisms, and this emission is characteristic of living organisms. Today, there is no doubt that biophotons exist, this emission has been measured by many groups and for many different living organisms, from humans to bacteria. However, the origin of biophotons and whether organisms use them to exchange information is not yet well understood; no model proposed to date is capable of reproducing and interpreting the great variety of experimental data coming from the many different living systems measured so far. In this brief review, we present our experimental work on the biophotons coming from germinating seeds, the main experimental results, and some new methods we are using to analyze the data to open the door for interpretative models of this phenomenon clarifying its function in the regulation and communication between cells and living organisms. We also discuss ideas on how to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured signal to open up new experimental possibilities that allow the measurement and the characterization of currently unmeasurable quantities.

Background: This work aimed to study the Village Test (VT) in a group of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and compare the results with those of a group of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and controls. Methods: A total of 50 patients with AD, 28 patients with MCI, and 38 controls were evaluated. All participants underwent the VT and an extensive neuropsychological evaluation. Results: The mean ages of the participants were 74.4 years for those with AD, 74 for those with MCI, and 70.2 for the controls. The AD group built smaller and essential villages with a scarce use of pieces, a poor use of dynamic pieces, and scarce use of human figures. All constructions were often concentrated in the center of the table. Conclusions: The villages built by the AD group represent a cognitive and affective coarctation and indicate a sense of existential disorientation and isolation. The VT is a useful aid for getting in touch with the inner emotional and existential states of patients with AD, and it could represent a complementary screening tool for orienting cognitive impairment diagnoses.

Integrated photonics on Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) substrates is a well developed research field that has already significantly impacted various fields, such as quantum computing, micro sensing devices, biosensing, and high-rate communications. Although quite complex circuits can be made with such technology, everything is based on a few ’building blocks’ which are then combined to form more complex circuits. This review article provides a detailed examination of the state of the art of integrated photonic building blocks focusing on passive elements, covering fundamental principles and design methodologies. Key components discussed include waveguides, fiber-to-chip couplers, edges and gratings, phase shifters, splitters and switches (including y-branch, MMI, and directional couplers), as well as subwavelength grating structures and ring resonators. Additionally, this review addresses challenges and future prospects in advancing integrated photonic circuits on SOI platforms, focusing on scalability, power efficiency, and fabrication issues. The objective of this review is to equip researchers and engineers in the field with a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape and future trajectories of integrated photonic components on SOI substrates with a 220 nm thick device layer of intrinsic silicon.

The aim of this study was to investigate the interferon tau (IFNt) concentration in the peripheral maternal blood during the early phase of pregnancy in buffalo cows and improve the knowledge on the physiological importance of circulating IFNt, evaluating the possible interaction with pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) and progesterone (P4). Blood samples were taken from buffalo cows on day 0 (day of AI), 7, 14, 18, 28, and 40 post insemination for the IFNt, PAG, and P4 analysis and to determine the IFNt mRNA expression. The animals were categorized ex post into Pregnant, Non-pregnant and Embryo mortality groups. The interferon value was influenced by group (p = 0.003), being always higher in pregnant buffalo cows than in non-pregnant ones, while the embryo mortality group showed intermediate values between those for pregnant and non-pregnant animals. The mRNA expression of IFNt was not influenced by groups or any time points. The regression analysis that included IFNt as the independent variable showed that PAGs, from day 18 (p < 0.01), and P4, from day 28 (p < 0.05), were positively associated with IFNt values. The close associations among IFNt, PAGs and P4 demonstrate that all three molecules work together for fetal–placental well-being and pregnancy support. Unfortunately, the great individual variability in circulating IFNt makes this analysis unsuitable for early pregnancy diagnosis.

Neck infections are often prone to being underestimated and can manifest insidiously. The spread of infection can lead to translocation into thoracic areas, causing descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM). However, the application of the post-mortem approach in such cases is not well-described in the literature. A literature review was carried out according to the PRISMA methods. Nine papers were included in the final review, revealing different levels of involvement of neck layers that can be linked to different causes. Expertise with respect to the anatomy of the fasciae and spaces of the neck enables an understanding of the pathogenesis of DNM. However, a clear autoptic description was not provided in any of the articles. Therefore, we also employed a practical post-mortem approach to cases of death due to DNM. It is fundamental for pathologists to identify the exact head and neck structures involved. Providing dissectors with support from an otolaryngologist could be useful. This paper could help address such difficult cases.

Integrated photonic platforms have rapidly emerged as highly promising and extensively investigated systems for advancing classical and quantum information technologies, since their ability to seamlessly integrate photonic components within the telecommunication band with existing silicon-based industrial processes offers significant advantages. However, despite this integration facilitating the development of novel devices, fostering fast and reliable communication protocols and the manipulation of quantum information, traditional integrated silicon photonics faces inherent physical limitations that necessitate a challenging trade-off between device efficiency and spatial footprint. To address this issue, researchers are focusing on the integration of nanoscale materials into photonic platforms, offering a novel approach to enhance device performance while reducing spatial requirements. These developments are of paramount importance in both classical and quantum information technologies, potentially revolutionizing the industry. In this review, we explore the latest endeavors in hybrid photonic platforms leveraging the combination of integrated silicon photonic platforms and nanoscale materials, allowing for the unlocking of increased device efficiency and compact form factors. Finally, we provide insights into future developments and the evolving landscape of hybrid integrated photonic nanomaterial platforms.

ABSTRACTThis study proposes an analytical approach to support the selection of intervention strategy in response to conditions of food insecurity. This is done by assessing the functionality of the local market providing particular attention to the simulation of supply response. The consideration that price changes can play a major role in raising the trader’s entrepreneurial attitude raises the question whether a price rise is required before trader’s action can be expected. At the same time, the consideration that such a decision is not merely the result of price changes, but involves other contextual factors, as faced or perceived by the trader, highlights the need for a system capable of combining and analyzing information on these contextual factors. Results of the analysis stress the relevance of local market structure and functionality as predictors of the inflationary consequences of a cash injection. This leads to a proposal for a simple way to generate quick and rough estimates of expected price changes, which can turn out particularly useful when the feasibility of field data collection is severely constrained.

BackgroundMonitoring workplace violence (WPV) against health care workers (HCWs) through incident reporting is crucial to drive prevention, but the actual implementation is spotty and experiences underreporting. ObjectiveThis study aims to introduce a systematic WPV surveillance in 2 public referral hospitals in Italy and assess underreporting, WPV annual rates, and attributes “before” (2016-2020) and “after” its implementation (November 2021 to 2022). MethodsDuring 2016-2020, incident reporting was based on procedures and data collection forms that were neither standardized between hospitals nor specific for aggressions. We planned and implemented a standardized WPV surveillance based on (1) an incident report form for immediate and systematic event notification, adopting international standards for violence definitions; (2) second-level root cause analysis with a dedicated psychologist, assessing violence determinants and impacts and offering psychological counseling; (3) a web-based platform for centralized data collection; and (4) periodic training for workforce coordinators and newly hired workers. We used data from incident reports to estimate underreporting, defined as an observed-to-expected (from literature and the “before” period) WPV ratio less than 1, and the 12-month WPV rates (per 100 HCWs) in the “before” and “after” periods. During the latter period, we separately estimated WPV rates for first and recurrent events. ResultsIn the “before” period, the yearly observed-to-expected ratios were consistently below 1 and as low as 0.27, suggesting substantial violence underreporting of up to 73%. WPV annual rates declined in 1 hospital (from 1.92 in 2016 to 0.57 in 2020) and rose in the other (from 0.52 to 1.0), with the divergence being attributable to trends in underreporting. Available data were poorly informative to identify at-risk HCW subgroups. In the “after” period, the observed-to-expected ratio rose to 1.14 compared to literature and 1.91 compared to the “before” period, consistently in both hospitals. The 12-month WPV rate was 2.08 (95% CI 1.79-2.42; 1.52 and 2.35 in the 2 hospitals); one-fifth (0.41/2.08, 19.7%) was due to recurrences. Among HCWs, the youngest group (3.79; P

Long-term treatment of schizophrenia with clozapine (CLZ), an atypical antipsychotic drug, is associated with an increased incidence of metabolic disorders mediated by poorly understood mechanisms. We herein report that CLZ, while slowing down the morphological changes and lipid accumulation occurring during SW872 cell adipogenesis, also causes an early (day 3) inhibition of the expression/nuclear translocation of CAAT/enhancer-binding protein β and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ. Under the same conditions, CLZ blunts NADPH oxidase-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) by a dual mechanism involving enzyme inhibition and ROS scavenging. These effects were accompanied by hampered activation of the nuclear factor (erythroid-derived2)-like 2 (Nrf2)-dependent antioxidant responses compared to controls, and by an aggravated formation of mitochondrial superoxide. CLZ failed to exert ROS scavenging activities in the mitochondrial compartment but appeared to actively scavenge cytosolic H2O2 derived from mitochondrial superoxide. The early formation of mitochondrial ROS promoted by CLZ was also associated with signs of mitochondrial dysfunction. Some of the above findings were recapitulated using mouse embryonic fibroblasts.We conclude that the NADPH oxidase inhibitory and cytosolic ROS scavenging activities of CLZ slow down SW872 cell adipogenesis and suppress their Nrf2 activation, an event apparently connected with increased mitochondrial ROS formation, which is associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Thus, the cellular events characterised herein may help to shed light on the more detailed molecular mechanisms explaining some of the adverse metabolic effects of CLZ.

IntroductionThyroid cancer incidence is increasing, and adiposity-related conditions are gaining space in its pathogenesis. In this study, we aimed to detect any anthropometric, biohumoral, and clinical features that might be associated with thyroid nodule malignancy, potentially representing novel non-invasive markers of thyroid cancer.Materials and methodsThe study was conducted in a group of 142 consecutive outpatients (47 men and 95 women) who underwent fine-needle aspiration biopsy/cytology (FNAB/C) due to suspicion of malignancy from January 2018 to September 2022. We compared lipid and glycemic blood profiles as well as non-invasive liver fibrosis indexes such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AAR), AST to platelet ratio index (APRI), and fibrosis index based on four factors (FIB-4) between patients with benign and malignant newly diagnosed nodules. Then, we performed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to assess their best cutoff values for discrimination of malignant nodules and chi-squared test to evaluate the association of specific dysmetabolic conditions with malignancy. To understand whether and to what degree dysmetabolic conditions increased the risk of thyroid nodule malignancy, we also calculated the odds ratio (OR) of the main biomarkers.ResultsAfter FNAB/C, 121 (85%) patients were diagnosed with benign thyroid nodules, while 21 (15%) individuals were diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Comparing patients with benign and malignant nodules, we found that individuals with thyroid cancer exhibited increased body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.048) and fasting plasma glucose (p = 0.046). Intriguingly, considering non-invasive scores for liver fibrosis, subjects with thyroid cancer presented increased AAR (p < 0.001) and APRI (p = 0.007), and these scores were associated with malignancy (p < 0.005) with OR = 7.1 and OR = 5, respectively. Moreover, we showed that only in the cancer group, low levels of vitamin D correlated with stigmata of impaired metabolism.DiscussionIn our study, AAR and APRI scores were associated with thyroid nodule malignancy and could be used to predict it and to speed up the diagnostic process. From a pathogenic point of view, we speculated that metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) along with hyperglycemia and vitamin D deficiency may represent putative drivers of thyroid carcinogenesis.

Intrinsically photosensitive melanopsin retinal ganglion cells (mRGCs) are crucial for non-image forming functions of the eye, including the photoentrainment of circadian rhythms and the regulation of the pupillary light reflex (PLR). Chromatic pupillometry, using light stimuli at different wavelengths, makes possible the isolation of the contribution of rods, cones, and mRGCs to the PLR. In particular, post-illumination pupil response (PIPR) is the most reliable pupil metric of mRGC function. We have previously described, in post-mortem investigations of AD retinas, a loss of mRGCs, and in the remaining mRGCs, we demonstrated extensive morphological abnormalities. We noted dendrite varicosities, patchy distribution of melanopsin, and reduced dendrite arborization. In this study, we evaluated, with chromatic pupillometry, the PLR in a cohort of mild-moderate AD patients compared to controls. AD and controls also underwent an extensive ophthalmological evaluation. In our AD cohort, PIPR did not significantly differ from controls, even though we observed a higher variability in the AD group and 5/26 showed PIPR values outside the 2 SD from the control mean values. Moreover, we found a significant difference between AD and controls in terms of rod-mediated transient PLR amplitude. These results suggest that in the early stage of AD there are PLR abnormalities that may reflect a pathology affecting mRGC dendrites before involving the mRGC cell body. Further studies, including AD cases with more severe and longer disease duration, are needed to further explore this hypothesis.

The 2012 Internet mini-series The Beauty Inside and the 2015 Korean film based upon it, Byuti Insaideu, illustrate some crucial philosophical questions related to the body, our relationship to objects and the way we engage space. This paper discusses some of these implications in relation to the elusive concept of beauty in contemporary architectural practice.

Abstract Recent advances in Nanotechnology have revolutionized the production of materials for biomedical applications. Nowadays, there is a plethora of nanomaterials with potential for use towards improvement of human health. On the other hand, very little is known about how these materials interact with biological systems, especially at the nanoscale level, mainly because of the lack of specific methods to probe these interactions. In this review, we will analytically describe the journey of nanoparticles (NPs) through the brain, starting from the very first moment upon injection. We will preliminarily provide a brief overlook of the physicochemical properties of NPs. Then, we will discuss how these NPs interact with the body compartments and biological barriers, before reaching the blood–brain barrier (BBB), the last gate guarding the brain. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction with the biomolecular, the bio‐mesoscopic, the (blood) cellular, and the tissue barriers, with a focus on the BBB. This will be framed in the context of brain infections, especially considering central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS‐TB), which is one of the most devastating forms of human mycobacterial infections. The final aim of this review is not a collection, nor a list, of current literature data, as it provides the readers with the analytical tools and guidelines for the design of effective and rational NPs for delivery in the infected brain.

Abstract Electrically conductive scaffolds, mimicking the unique directional alignment of muscle fibers in the myocardium, are fabricated using the 3D printing micro-stereolithography technique. Polyethylene glycol diacrylate (photo-sensitive polymer), Irgacure 819 (photo-initiator), curcumin (dye) and polyaniline (conductive polymer) are blended to make the conductive ink that is crosslinked using free radical photo-polymerization reaction. Curcumin acts as a liquid filter and prevents light from penetrating deep into the photo-sensitive solution and plays a central role in the 3D printing process. The obtained scaffolds demonstrate well defined morphology with an average pore size of 300 ± 15 μm and semi-conducting properties with a conductivity of ~ 10–6 S/m. Cyclic voltammetry analyses detect the electroactivity and highlight how the electron transfer also involve an ionic diffusion between the polymer and the electrolyte solution. Scaffolds reach their maximum swelling extent 30 min after immersing in the PBS at 37 °C and after 4 weeks they demonstrate a slow hydrolytic degradation rate typical of polyethylene glycol network. Conductive scaffolds display tunable conductivity and provide an optimal environment to the cultured mouse cardiac progenitor cells.

Abstract We analyzed BCR::ABL1 expression at stop and in the first month after discontinuation in 168 chronic myeloid leukemia patients who stopped imatinib or 2nd generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (2G‐TKIs) while in sustained deep molecular response. A hybrid methodology combining the use of a robust LQR servomechanism (RSLQR) and a genetic algorithm (GA) for the design of the flight control system (FCS) of a lightweight unmanned aerial vehicle is the subject of this paper. The objective is to develop a systematic design approach based on a proven technique that provides improved time response and robust steady-state performance of the control system, so as to reduce the burden of trial-and-error procedures. The design of the inner loops of the UAV autopilot is formulated as an optimization problem where the GA is used to determine the weights of the RSLQR synthesis. The process is aimed at maximizing a weighted sum of an appropriately defined multi-objective fitness function, evaluated through a series of nonlinear simulations, so as to fully engage the control system in complex maneuvers, such as combined changes in altitude and heading at different flight speeds. The performance of the proposed control design approach is evaluated using analytical tools for linear systems, software-in-the-loop simulations, and Monte Carlo campaigns. The comparison between the new controller and a classical FCS with internal PID loops on attitude angles for stability and control augmentation is analyzed and discussed using an accurate vehicle model with an extended Kalman filter for output reconstruction.

Background The epidemiology of myeloid hematologic malignancies in Italy has been poorly investigated. Methods We used a validated database of 1974-2003 incident cases of hematologic malignancies among the resident population (all ages) of Sardinia, Italy, to describe the incidence of myeloid malignancies overall (N = 4389 cases) and by subtype. We investigated the time trend of acute myeloid leukemia (N = 1227 cases), chronic myeloid leukemia (N = 613 cases), and myelodysplastic syndrome (N = 1296 cases), and used Bayesian methods to explore their geographic spread, and Poisson regression analysis to estimate their association with environmental and socio-economic factors. Results The annual standardized (world population) incidence rate (IR) of myeloid malignancies over the study period was 6.5 per 100,000 (95% CI 6.2-6.7). Myelodysplastic syndromes were the most prevalent subgroup (IR = 1.7, 95% CI 1.5-1.8). Incidence of all myeloid malignancies combined increased sharply during the study period with an annual percent change (APC) of 10.06% (95% CI 9.51-10.61), 19.77% for myelodysplastic syndromes (95% CI 19.63-19.91), and 3.18% (95% CI 2.99-3.37) for acute myeloid leukemia. Chronic myeloid leukemia did not show an upward trend. Apart from sporadic excesses in small rural communities and the major urban area, there was no evidence of spatial clustering. The risk of myeloid malignancies increased with increasing prevalence of sheep breeding. Conclusions Our results might prompt further research on the local genetic and environmental determinants of myeloid hematologic malignancies.

The need for food products of animal origin is increasing worldwide. Satisfying these needs in a way that has minimal impact on the environment requires cutting-edge technologies and techniques to enhance the genetic quality of cattle. Heat stress (HS), in particular, is affecting dairy cattle with increasing frequency and severity. As future climatic challenges become more evident, identifying dairy cows that are more tolerant to HS will be important for breeding dairy herds that are better adapted to future environmental conditions and for supporting the sustainability of dairy farming. While research into the genetics of HS in the context of the effect of global warming on dairy cattle is gaining momentum, the specific genomic regions involved in heat tolerance are still not well documented. Advances in omics information, QTL mapping, transcriptome profiling and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified genomic regions and variants associated with tolerance to HS. Such studies could provide deeper insights into the genetic basis for response to HS and make an important contribution to future breeding for heat tolerance, which will help to offset the adverse effects of HS in dairy cattle. Overall, there is a great interest in identifying candidate genes and the proportion of genetic variation associated with heat tolerance in dairy cattle, and this area of research is currently very active worldwide. This review provides comprehensive information pertaining to some of the notable recent studies on the genetic architecture of HS in dairy cattle, with particular emphasis on the identified candidate genes associated with heat tolerance in dairy cattle. Since effective breeding programs require optimal knowledge of the impaired immunity and associated health complications caused by HS, the underlying mechanisms by which HS modulates the immune response and renders animals susceptible to various health disorders are explained. In addition, future breeding strategies to relieve HS in dairy cattle and improve their welfare while maintaining milk production are discussed.

Introduction: Bottom ash (BA) constitutes a significant by-product obtained during the incineration of municipal solid waste in waste-to-energy (WtE) plants. BA is a heterogeneous material made of different fractions, glass, minerals, metals, and unburned residual organic matter. Due to the non-hazardous nature of the unburned material, BA can be effectively recycled, becoming a valuable resource. However, BA displays a high content of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) within its finer grain size. Pedigree charts remain essential in oncological genetic counseling for identifying individuals with an increased risk of developing hereditary tumors. However, this valuable data source often remains confined to paper files, going unused. We propose a computer-aided detection/diagnosis system, based on machine learning and deep learning techniques, capable of the following: (1) assisting genetic oncologists in digitizing paper-based pedigree charts, and in generating new digital ones, and (2) automatically predicting the genetic predisposition risk directly from these digital pedigree charts. To the best of our knowledge, there are no similar studies in the current literature, and consequently, no utilization of software based on artificial intelligence on pedigree charts has been made public yet. By incorporating medical images and other data from omics sciences, there is also a fertile ground for training additional artificial intelligence systems, broadening the software predictive capabilities. We plan to bridge the gap between scientific advancements and practical implementation by modernizing and enhancing existing oncological genetic counseling services. This would mark the pioneering development of an AI-based application designed to enhance various aspects of genetic counseling, leading to improved patient care and advancements in the field of oncogenetics.

Studies in cattle have shown that high temperatures increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) causing an imbalance between ROS and the ability of antioxidant systems to detoxify and remove the reactive intermediates. As such studies remain limited in buffalo, the effect of temperature on oxidative stress was investigated through the oxidative stress index (OSi). Blood samples were collected from 40 buffaloes over 12 time points distributed over two years (2021, 2022). Samples were taken monthly during the hot and cold seasons. Plasma free oxygen radicals were determined using the d-ROMs test (Diacron, Italy), modified for a microplate procedure, and the results were expressed in arbitrary Carratelli Units (U.CARR). Plasma antioxidants were determined by using the BAP test (Diacron) in a dedicated spectrophotometer (Carpe Diem Free, Diacron). The OSi parameter was calculated as d-ROMs/BAP × 100. Temperature and humidity were recorded daily during the trial to calculate the Temperature Humidity Index (THI). For statistical analysis, year and season and their interactions were included in the model. The results of this study showed for the first time the effect of season on the oxidative stress in buffalo. The minimum and maximum THI values for the hot and cold season recorded during the experimental period were 79.27 ± 2.20 and 63.42 ± 3.20, respectively. Levels of d-ROMs and BAP were affected by the seasons (133.0 vs. 145.1 U.CARR, p = 0.0189, and 2489.19 vs. 2392.43 mml/L, p = 0.033, in the hot and cold season, respectively). A significant year × season interaction was found both for d-ROMs and BAP (p = 0.06 and p < 0.0001, respectively). Moreover, OSi was affected by season, showing a growing trend from hot to cold season (5.35 vs. 6.17, p < 0.0001), but, interestingly, it was unaffected by annual variation. Therefore, Osi could be considered a better and independent marker of oxidative status in buffalo, with respect to the evaluation of single determinations of d-ROMs and BAP. Lastly, there were no differences in the plasma 25OHD levels between seasons; concentrations were 12.24 and 10.26 ng/mL in the hot and cold season, respectively.

Single-photon sources are important for integrated photonics and quantum technologies, and can be used in quantum key distribution, quantum computing, and sensing. Color centers in the solid state are a promising candidate for the development of the next generation of single-photon sources integrated in quantum photonics devices. They are point defects in a crystal lattice that absorb and emit light at given wavelengths and can emit single photons with high efficiency. The landscape of color centers has changed abruptly in recent years, with the identification of a wider set of color centers and the emergence of new solid-state platforms for room-temperature single-photon generation. This review discusses the emerging material platforms hosting single-photon-emitting color centers, with an emphasis on their potential for the development of integrated optical circuits for quantum photonics.

ContextDietary interventions such as restrictive diets or supplements are common treatments for young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Evidence for the efficacy of these interventions is still controversial.ObjectiveTo assess the efficacy of specific dietary interventions on symptoms, functions, and clinical domains in subjects with ASD by using a meta-analytic approach.Data sourcesOvid Medline, PsycINFO, Embase databases.Study selectionWe selected placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized clinical trials assessing the efficacy of dietary interventions in ASD published from database inception through September 2017.Data extractionOutcome variables were subsumed under 4 clinical domains and 17 symptoms and/or functions groups. Hedges' adjusted g values were used as estimates of the effect size of each dietary intervention relative to placebo.ResultsIn this meta-analysis, we examined 27 double-blind, randomized clinical trials, including 1028 patients with ASD: 542 in the intervention arms and 486 in the placebo arms. Participant-weighted average age was 7.1 years. Participant-weighted average intervention duration was 10.6 weeks. Dietary supplementation (including omega-3, vitamin supplementation, and/or other supplementation), omega-3 supplementation, and vitamin supplementation were more efficacious than the placebo at improving several symptoms, functions, and clinical domains. Effect sizes were small (mean Hedges' g for significant analyses was 0.31), with low statistical heterogeneity and low risk of publication bias.LimitationsMethodologic heterogeneity among the studies in terms of the intervention, clinical measures and outcomes, and sample characteristics.ConclusionsThis meta-analysis does not support nonspecific dietary interventions as treatment of ASD but suggests a potential role for some specific dietary interventions in the management of some symptoms, functions, and clinical domains in patients with ASD.

Air pollution poses a great environmental risk to health. Outdoor fine particulate matter (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 μm) exposure is the fifth leading risk factor for death in the world, accounting for 4.2 million deaths and > 103 million disability-adjusted life years lost according to the Global Burden of Disease Report. The World Health Organization attributes 3.8 million additional deaths to indoor air pollution. Air pollution can harm acutely, usually manifested by respiratory or cardiac symptoms, as well as chronically, potentially affecting every organ in the body. It can cause, complicate, or exacerbate many adverse health conditions. Tissue damage may result directly from pollutant toxicity because fine and ultrafine particles can gain access to organs, or indirectly through systemic inflammatory processes. Susceptibility is partly under genetic and epigenetic regulation. Although air pollution affects people of all regions, ages, and social groups, it is likely to cause greater illness in those with heavy exposure and greater susceptibility. Persons are more vulnerable to air pollution if they have other illnesses or less social support. Harmful effects occur on a continuum of dosage and even at levels below air quality standards previously considered to be safe.

Although air pollution is well known to be harmful to the lung and airways, it can also damage most other organ systems of the body. It is estimated that about 500,000 lung cancer deaths and 1.6 million COPD deaths can be attributed to air pollution, but air pollution may also account for 19% of all cardiovascular deaths and 21% of all stroke deaths. Air pollution has been linked to other malignancies, such as bladder cancer and childhood leukemia. Lung development in childhood is stymied with exposure to air pollutants, and poor lung development in children predicts lung impairment in adults. Air pollution is associated with reduced cognitive function and increased risk of dementia. Particulate matter in the air (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 μm) is associated with delayed psychomotor development and lower child intelligence. Studies link air pollution with diabetes mellitus prevalence, morbidity, and mortality. Pollution affects the immune system and is associated with allergic rhinitis, allergic sensitization, and autoimmunity. It is also associated with osteoporosis and bone fractures, conjunctivitis, dry eye disease, blepharitis, inflammatory bowel disease, increased intravascular coagulation, and decreased glomerular filtration rate. Atopic and urticarial skin disease, acne, and skin aging are linked to air pollution. Air pollution is controllable and, therefore, many of these adverse health effects can be prevented.

The quest for novel nanoscale materials for different applications necessitates that they are easy to obtain and have excellent physical properties and low toxicity. Moreover, considering the ongoing environmental impact of noxious chemical waste products, it is important to adopt eco-friendly approaches for nanoparticle synthesis. In this work, a natural polymer (medium molecular weight chitosan) derived from chitin was employed as a reducing agent to obtain gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with a chitosan shell (AuNPs@CS) by a microwave oven. The chitosan is economically viable and cost-competitive in the market showing also nontoxic behavior in the environment and living organisms. The synthesized AuNPs@CS-FITC NPs were fully characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic characterization techniques. The size distribution of NPs was about 15 nm, which is a suitable dimension to use in biomedical applications due to their high tissue penetration, great circulation in blood, and optimal clearance as well as low toxicity. The prepared polymer-capped NPs were further functionalized with a fluorescent molecule, i.e., Fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate (FITC), to perform imaging in the cell. The results highlighted the goodness of the synthesis procedure, as well as the high internalization rate that resulted in an optimal fluorescence intensity. Thus, this work presents a good sustainable/green approach-mediated polymer nanocomposite for various applications in the field of diagnostic imaging.

Introduction: Bottom ashes (BA) from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) are currently classified by the European Waste Catalogue as industrial non-hazardous waste. To promote their reuse, identification and characterization of the heavy metal-bearing phases (both glass and minerals), as well as their weathering behavior, must be addressed for what concern the chemical composition, mineralogical phases, and in high concentrations and pollutants’ mobility. An important point to be noted is whether the results from a given plant can be generalized.Materials and methods: In this work, BA from five waste-to-energy (WtE) plants in northern Italy were sorted based on different grain sizes. The area showed similar MSW production, collected from a culturally homogeneous area, and similar collection management. For each grain size, a mineralogical, chemical, and physical characterization was carried out using XRF, XRD, TGA, and the leaching test.Results and discussion: We found that for major elements, the average chemical composition of the incinerators is similar, with some differences in minor elements. Ferrara (FE) and Forlì-Cesena (FC) BA show portlandite, higher ettringite, and less amorphous than the Torino (TO), Parma (PR), and Piacenza (PC) BA. This affects the pH, the release, and toxicity of the leachates. In FE and FC ashes, ettringite is insoluble, and we not only have low sulfate but also Ni and Ba beyond reglementary limits, suggesting that Ni and Ba are present as hydroxides with portlandite, which are soluble. In TO, PR, and PC, Cr and sulfates are beyond limits, suggesting that Cr comes from dissolution in ettringite. Cu and Cl are always beyond limits; the dissolution of chlorides accounts for only 30%–35% of the global Cl leachate. We observe that in the assessment of the potential toxicity of the ashes, mineralogy has a higher effect than the bulk chemical composition. Grain size sorting, although useful together with other techniques, is not by itself able to comply with the PTE risk level.Conclusion: The findings contribute to the development of efficient treatment strategies for BA, highlighting the need for a more thorough investigation to understand composition and properties and to find innovative ways to reuse, promoting the circular economy and sustainable waste management practices.

Background Infective endocarditis (IE) could be suspected in any febrile patients admitted to the emergency department (ED). This study was aimed at assessing clinical criteria predictive of IE and identifying and prospectively validating a sensible and easy‐to‐use clinical prediction score for the diagnosis of IE in the ED. Methods and Results We conducted a retrospective observational study, enrolling consecutive patients with fever admitted to the ED between January 2015 and December 2019 and subsequently hospitalized. Several clinical and anamnestic standardized variables were collected and evaluated for the association with IE diagnosis. We derived a multivariate prediction model by logistic regression analysis. The identified predictors were assigned a score point value to obtain the Clinical Rule for Infective Endocarditis in the Emergency Department (CREED) score. To validate the CREED score we conducted a prospective observational study between January 2020 and December 2021, enrolling consecutive febrile patients hospitalized after the ED visit, and evaluating the association between the CREED score values and the IE diagnosis. A total of 15 689 patients (median age, 71 [56–81] years; 54.1% men) were enrolled in the retrospective cohort, and IE was diagnosed in 267 (1.7%). The CREED score included 12 variables: male sex, anemia, dialysis, pacemaker, recent hospitalization, recent stroke, chest pain, specific infective diagnosis, valvular heart disease, valvular prosthesis, previous endocarditis, and clinical signs of suspect endocarditis. The CREED score identified 4 risk groups for IE diagnosis, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.874 (0.849–0.899). The prospective cohort included 13 163 patients, with 130 (1.0%) IE diagnoses. The CREED score had an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.881 (0.848–0.913) in the validation cohort, not significantly different from the one calculated in the retrospective cohort (P=0.578). Conclusions In this study, we propose and prospectively validate the CREED score, a clinical prediction rule for the diagnosis of IE in patients with fever admitted to the ED. Our data reflect the difficulty of creating a meaningful tool able to identify patients with IE among this general and heterogeneous population because of the complexity of the disease and its low prevalence in the ED setting.

We present the first seismic imaging of the crustal volume affected by the March-April 2021 Thessaly sequence by applying a 3D seismic tomography to the aftershocks recorded by an unprecedented number of stations. The results, in terms of VP, VS, and VP/VS ratio and earthquakes’ location parameters, depict blind fluid-filled inherited structures within the Northern Thessaly seismic gap. The tomographic images highlight the basal detachment accommodating the Pelagonian nappe onto the carbonate of the Gavrovo unit. The high VP/VS (>1.85) where most of the seismicity occurs increases from SE to NW, showing possible fluid accumulation in the NW edge of the seismogenic volume that could have contributed to the sequence evolution. The aftershock relocations correlate well with the fault planes of the three mainshocks proposed by several geodetic models, but also show additional possible faults sub-parallel and antithetical to the main structures, not to be overlooked for future seismic risk mitigation.

Emerging evidence suggests that the combination of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and reading training may provide promising benefits for dyslexia; however, the clinical effects and the role of individual differences in tDCS outcomes for dyslexia remain unclear. To this end, the present study investigated the effects of tDCS on clinically relevant reading measures and examined factors (i.e. reading at baseline, age, and intelligence quotient [IQ]) that may contribute to improvements following tDCS treatment. Our results showed that, in terms of word reading fluency, the percentage of responders in the active tDCS group was higher than that in the sham tDCS group. Linear mixed effects models showed that the effect of tDCS and reading training tasks on word reading fluency depended on reading at baseline with age and IQ. Thus, the present study provides research-based selection criteria for potential responders to tDCS and encourages tailored intervention based on individual characteristics.

Background: Women represent less than 5% of the incarcerated population in Italy, with very limited data on HCV infection. Higher HCV seroprevalence and active infection rates have been described among incarcerated females in available studies. Our aim is to compare the prevalence and cascade of care of HCV between male and female populations in Italian penitentiaries. Methods: We conducted a multicentre, retrospective study comparing HCV seroprevalence, active infections, treatment, and SVR rates between female (Group A) and male (Group B) populations in Italian prison settings. Results: No significant differences were found between the two groups regarding PWIDs (p = 0.16), nor in people living with HIV (p = 0.35) or HBV co-infection (p = 0.36). HCV seroprevalence was higher in Group A (p = 0.002). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding active infections (p = 0.41). Both groups showed a low level of fibrosis, and the dominant genotype was 3a. Almost all patients underwent antiviral treatment. All treated patients achieved SVR12. Conclusions: Our findings illuminate the importance of recognizing and addressing gender differences in HCV seroprevalence within penitentiary settings. Moving forward, addressing the unique needs of incarcerated females and optimizing HCV care for all incarcerated individuals are essential steps in the pursuit of achieving HCV micro-elimination goals.

Since the 1980s, researchers have taken giant steps in understanding how to use quantum mechanics for solving real problems—for example, making a computer that works according to the laws of quantum mechanics. In recent decades, researchers have tried to develop a platform for quantum information and computation that can be integrated into digital and telecom technologies without the need of a cryogenic environment. The current status of research in the field of quantum integrated photonics will be reviewed. A review of the most common integrated photonic platforms will be given, together with the main achievements and results in the last decade.

Hemophilia A is a hemorrhagic disorder caused by insufficient or inadequate coagulation factor VIII activity. Two different forms are described: congenital, hereditary X-linked, and acquired. Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare condition and it is defined by the production of autoantibodies neutralizing factor VIII, known as inhibitors. We report the case of a 72-year-old man with a clinical diagnosis of AHA after SARS-CoV-2 infection, which has been described in association with several hematological complications. SARS-CoV-2 infection could represent the immunological trigger for the development of autoantibodies. In our patient, SARS-CoV-2 infection preceded the hemorrhagic complications by 15 days. This lag time is in line with the other cases reported and compatible with the development of an intense immune response with autoantibody production. It is possible that since our patient was affected by type 1 diabetes mellitus, he was more prone to an immune system pathological response against self-antigens. A prompt, appropriate therapeutic intervention with activated recombinant factor VII administration and cyclophosphamide has led to rapid remission of clinical and laboratory findings.

The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p_{astro}>0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p_{astro}>0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify none from binary neutron stars. However, from the gravitational-wave data alone, we are not able to measure matter effects that distinguish whether the binary components are neutron stars or black holes. The range of inferred component masses is similar to that found with previous catalogs, but the O3b candidates include the first confident observations of neutron-star–black-hole binaries. Including the 35 candidates from O3b in addition to those from GWTC-2.1, GWTC-3 contains 90 candidates found by our analysis with p_{astro}>0.5 across the first three observing runs. These observations of compact binary coalescences present an unprecedented view of the properties of black holes and neutron stars.

The utilization of hydrogen (H2) as a renewable and clean energy carrier, free from the reliance on fossil fuels, represents a significant technological challenge. The use of renewable energy sources for hydrogen production, such as photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water under solar radiation, has garnered significant interest. Indeed, the storage of hydrogen presents another hurdle to the ongoing advancement of hydrogen energy. Concerning solid-state hydrogen storage, magnesium hydride (MgH2) has emerged as a promising option due to its high capacity, excellent reversibility, and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, its storage performance needs improvement to make it suitable for practical applications. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has distinguished itself as the most extensively researched photocatalyst owing to its high photo-activity, good chemical and thermal stability, low toxicity, and affordability. This review highlights the application of TiO2 for hydrogen production under visible and solar light, with a particular focus both on its modification without the use of noble metals and its utilization as a catalyst to enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2.

In this study, an innovative approach for the integration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels is described. The composite material is the first in the literature where AgNPs were doped into PEGDA using photo-polymerization technique for a double function: detection and elimination of Hg(II) ions from water. The doping of AgNPs into PEGDA-based matrices was performed using a photo-polymerizable process. The Hg(II) sensing properties were explored in a concentration range from 0 to 20 mg/L. Notably, a linear dependence was observed up to 1 mg/L, accompanied by a limit of detection of 0.3 mg/L. Beyond sensing, the efficiency of the doped hydrogel in removing Hg(II) ions was also investigated and compared with an undoped PEGDA matrix. The outcome highlighted an enhanced removal efficiency of the doped material of approximately 23%. Finally, the experimental data suggested that the interaction between Hg(II) ions and the modified hydrogel adhered to the Langmuir isotherm model, which suggested that chemisorption was the driving mechanism of the adsorption of Hg(II) onto the modified hydrogel matrix.
