The ternary intermetallic compounds with general formula UTX (T = Fe, Co, Ni; X = Si, Ge) were analyzed by X-ray methods and some of their physical properties examined. All the studied phases belong to the well known TiNiSi-type structure. The compound UFeGe shows a phase transition at 500 K; at room temperature it crystallizes in a new monoclinic structure with a= 6.986, b= 4.308, c= 6.992Å, β= 93.71° in the space group P21/m; above 500 K it changes into the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type.

The phase diagram of the Eu–Sn system has been investigated in the whole composition range using differential thermal analysis, metallographic analysis, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Five intermediate phases have been found. Two of them have been confirmed: EuSn3(AuCu3-type) and EuSn (CrB-type); while Eu3Sn5(Pu3Pd5-type), Eu5Sn3(W5Si3-type) and Eu2Sn (Co2Si-type) have been prepared and characterized for the first time. Four eutectic points occur in this system: at 5 at% Sn and 790°C, 44 at% Sn and 1075°C, 74 at% Sn and 785°C and at less than 1 at% Eu and 230°C.

The structures of two new phases were determined by single crystal diffractometric data. The phse ThFe0.22(2)Sn2, orthorhombic, space group Cmcm(No. 63). Pearson symbol S16-3.12, a = 4.479(1), b = 17.045(3), c = 4.430(1) Å, V = 338.2(1) Å, Z = 4, R = 0.038for 260 reflection with F> 4σ(F) has a defective structure derived from the CeNiSi2type. The phase Th4Fe11Sn5, tetragonal, space group P4/mbm(No. 127). Pearson symbol IP44, a = 8.290(1), c = 11.946(1) Å, V = 821.0(2) Å, Z = 2, R = 0.061for 760 reflections with F11> 4σ(F11) shows a structure of a new type, formed by two segments which alternate along the c-axis. One segment shows an atomic arrangement very similar to that of the Ce(Mn,Ni)11structure, while the other corresponds to a half-cell of the Cr5B3type. Slabs of centered icosahedra containing only iron atoms are a characteristic feature of this structure, common also, besides the cited Ce(Mn,Ni)11, to the Ce2Ni12Si4and Nd6Fe11Si for La6Co11Ga) structures. For the phase Th4Fe11Sn5a transition to the ferromagnetic state at 375 K was observed by differential scanning calorimetry, electrical and magnetic measurements.

We report on the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of GdFeSi, as obtained from DC magnetisation and specific heat measurements, in applied fields up to 9 Tesla and in a temperature range between 3 and 300 K. The compound orders ferromagnetically at 118 K. In the paramagnetic range it follows the Curie–Weiss law with μ_eff = 8.68 μ_B and ϑ_c = + 122 K. At 5 K a saturation magnetic moment of 6.16 μ_B was found, while the spontaneous magnetic moment is 6.11 μ_B. From thermodynamic measurements the adiabatic temperature rise for an applied field of 9 T was ΔT = 4.5 K and the refrigerant capacity of the compound in the 10–160 K temperature range was calculated to be 1940 J kg⁻¹. The value is comparable with the one reported for Gd₅Ge₄ of 780 J kg⁻¹ in the temperature span 10–50 K for an applied magnetic field of 5 Tesla.

The phase diagram of the Yb–Sn system has been revised in the composition range 55–70 at.% Sn using differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, optical and electronic microscopy. The new phase Yb3Sn5, which crystallizes with the orthorhombic Pu3Pd5type of structure, has been found; while the non-existence of the phase Yb3Sn has been confirmed.

The phase diagram of the Sc-Zn system has been investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA), metallographic analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy. The Sc-rich side of the system (0 to 40 at.% Zn) has not been studied owing to the high reactivity and contamination of the samples by the container material (Mo). Five intermediate phases have been found: ScZn (CsCl-type), ScZn2(AIB2-type), Sc1Zn17(Ru4Be17-type), ScZn12(ThMn12-type) and Sc13Zn14(Gd13Cd58-type), which was not previously known. When comparing this system with the Y-Zn or other R-Zn systems, a clear difference, especially concerning the number of intermediate phases formed, which in the case of Sc is much lower, emerges.

The phase diagram of the Sc-Au system has been investigated in the range 20 to 90 at.% Au, using differential thermal analysis, metallographic analysis, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. A total of six intermediate phases has been found. Three of them have been confirmed: ScAu4 (MoNi4-type), ScAu2 (MoSi2-type) and ScAu (CsCl-type), while ScAu3 (TiCu3-type), Sc2Au (anti PbCl2-type) and Sc3.5Au (Hf54Os17-type derived) have been found for the first time in this investigation.

Borocarbides compounds exhibit the record critical temperature for intermetallic materials. They show moreover intriguing interplay between magnetism and superconductivity when the rare earth is magnetic. Here we present a technique to obtain in situ deposition of these materials using a pulsed laser multitarget system. We deposited films of YNi2B2C and magnetic ErNi2B2C and HoNi2B2C.
