Abstract

In JET, both high density and low-q operation are limited by disruptions. The density limit disruptions are caused initially by impurity radiation. This causes a contraction of the plasma temperature profile and leads to an MHD unstable configuration. There is evidence of magnetic island formation resulting in minor disruptions. After several minor disruptions, a major disruption with a rapid energy quench occurs. This event takes place in two stages. In the first stage there is a loss of energy from the central region. In the second stage there is a more rapid drop to a very low temperature, apparently due to a dramatic increase in impurity radiation. The final current decay takes place in the resulting cold plasma. During the growth of the MHD instability the initially rotating mode is brought to rest. This mode locking is believed to be due to an electromagnetic interaction with the vacuum vessel and external magnetic field asymmetries. The low-q disruptions are remarkable for the precision with which they occur at qψ = 2. These disruptions do not have extended precursors or minor disruptions. The instability grows and locks rapidly. The energy quench and current decay are generally similar to those of the density limit.

Abstract

An experiment to test beryllium as a limiter material has been performed in the ISX-B tokamak. One facet of the studies centred on characterizing impurity influxes and concentrations. The radiation from both low-Z (Be, C, N, O) and intermediate-Z (Ti, Cr) contaminants was measured at the limiter surface and at a wall location 90° away from the limiter to assess the relative contributions of metallic impurities from the two different sources. The effect of limiter melting, with concomitant reduction of both low-Z and intermediate-Z elements, was also documented. The analysis, including atomic rate coefficients, for interpreting spectral radiation in terms of production rates is discussed in detail.

Abstract

Characteristics of the operation of the DITE tokamak with the MkII bundle divertor and neutral beam heating are described. In these experiments the divertor was pumped by a liquid helium cooled cryopump, and fuelling was by gas input into the tokamak vacuum vessel. Generally a fuelling rate of 1–2 × 1021 atoms/s is required to sustain a constant density with the divertor operating, and about 50% of the gas input flows to the divertor. Global power balances have been carried out using instrumentation distributed around the tokamak and in the divertor. It is found that the wall loading exhibits substantial toroidal and poloidal asymmetries, with a high loading near the gas feed when the divertor is operating. The percentage power exhaust to the divertor is highest, up to 70%, in ohmic discharges with the gas feed turned off and the density falling. With 1.4 MW of neutral beam heating, about 24% of the power is seen at the divertor plates. Typically, between 70% and 80% of the input power can be counted for. Measurements in the scrape-off plasma show that the density is about 1× 1019 m−3 at 30 to 40 mm outside the separatrix, when the line average density in the tokamak is 2−2.5 × 1019 m−3. However there is less than 10% reionisation of recycled neutrals in the divertor, as determined from Hα measurements. In addition, the strong coupling observed between the particle and power flow to the divertor suggests that the exhaust is convective, and this may be a consequence of the strong mirror field characteristic of the bundle divertor magnetic geometry.

154. Enhanced performance of high current discharges in JET produced by ICRF heating during the current rise

Abstract

The performance of high current discharges can be improved by applying central ICRF heating before or shortly after the onset of sawtooth activity in the plasma current rise phase. Long sawtooth-free periods have been obtained which result in a transiently-enhanced discharge performance. High Te(0)=9-10.5 keV with peaked profiles Te(0)/(Te)=3-4 were obtained giving values of Ne(0)Te(0) up to 6*1020 (keV m-3). Improvements in Ti(0) and neutron production are observed. A best value of nD(0)Ti(0) tau E=1.65*1020 (m-3 keV s) was achieved. Local transport simulation shows that the electron and ion thermal diffusivities do not differ substantially in the two cases of current-rise (CR) and flat-top (FT) heating, the performance of the central plasma region being enhanced, in the case of current-rise, entirely by the elimination of the sawtooth instability. The maximum D-D reaction rate is enhanced by a factor of 2 compared to the flat-top value. An appreciable part of the reaction rate is attributed to 2nd harmonic deuterium (2 omega CD) heating. In all current-rise discharges radiation amounts to 25-50% of total power and Zeff remains roughly constant.

An overview is given of experimental results obtained on JET during 1988, and in particular of results at high total power input into plasmas with various configurations. An account is given of the various interpretations of these results and some of the difficulties encountered are related. The progress is summarised in terms of the projected D-T performance.

Abstract

As a first step in the JET ICRF programme, two antenna generator units have been installed at JET and operated up to the design specification of 3 MW coupled in the Torus for 1 second. After a brief description of the system, the experimental results of wave coupling to the plasma and matching the plasma loaded antenna are discussed. The first heating results are presented concentrating on the analysis of a case where the total power to the plasma increases by a ratio of 2.5.

Abstract

The results of plasma measurements on a two-stage, high-current-density ( approximately 50 A cm-2) Hall accelerator hydrogen plasma are described. These measurements show that although Omega tau is large so that the electrons are collisionless, the observed electron conductivity is anomalously high. This appears to arise because of the existence of an approximately 5 MHz fluctuation in which the associated azimuthal electric field drives collisionless electron drift currents. Momentum and total energy balances are investigated. These are consistent with a large wall loss of ions which is to be expected since the instability-dominated accelerating voltage gives a small ratio of ion Larmor radius to stage length. The electron energy balance is studied so that this might provide the basis for a stability analysis.

Abstract

Ohmic heating studies in hydrogen and deuterium up to currents of Ip = 5 MA have been completed and additional heating experiments by means of ICRH and NBI are now in process. With ICRH powers up to 7 MW, the global energy confinement time τE is observed to deteriorate with increasing heating power. NBI experiments are at a more preliminary stage, but also show deterioration in τE. Detailed studies of confinement time scaling in ohmically heated discharges show a strong dependence of plasma size, τE ∼ R1.7a1.3, but a much weaker dependence on q and ne than seen in smaller experiments. Boundary phenomena have been studied from early 1984. Data on the impurity coverage of limiters and wall have been collected during three successive experimental campaigns. Substantial amounts of wall material have consistently been found on the limiters and a large inventory of hydrogen isotopes concentrated on the colder edges. The wall in the shadow of protective elements shows non-uniform erosion. Langmuir probe measurements of edge plasma parameters have been taken in OH, RF and NB discharges. Additional heating leads generally to a temperature increase of the scrape-off layer. Model calculations using data from these diagnostics seem to produce a consistent picture of impurity production in the scrape-off layer which agrees reasonably well with spectroscopic observations.

Abstract

Wall conditioning will be required in ITER to control fuel and impurity recycling, as well as tritium (T) inventory. Analysis of conditioning cycle on the JET, with its ITER-Like Wall is presented, evidencing reduced need for wall cleaning in ITER compared to JET–CFC. Using a novel 2D multi-fluid model, current density during Glow Discharge Conditioning (GDC) on the in-vessel plasma-facing components (PFC) of ITER is predicted to approach the simple expectation of total anode current divided by wall surface area. Baking of the divertor to 350 °C should desorb the majority of the co-deposited T. ITER foresees the use of low temperature plasma based techniques compatible with the permanent toroidal magnetic field, such as Ion (ICWC) or Electron Cyclotron Wall Conditioning (ECWC), for tritium removal between ITER plasma pulses. Extrapolation of JET ICWC results to ITER indicates removal comparable to estimated T-retention in nominal ITER D:T shots, whereas GDC may be unattractive for that purpose.

Abstract

Abstract

The CLEO neutral injection system delivers up to 150 kW of neutrals tangentially to the torus. Substantial electron and ion heating is observed on injection into low current ohmic discharges where the vacuum fields dominate the rotational transform. At moderate densities ne ~ 21019 m~3, a power input ≤ 70 kW to fast confined ions will double Te and Ti. Te ~ 320 eV and Ti ~ 300 eV are reached. Gas puffing during injection has allowed densities up to ne ~ lO20 m-3 and peak beta values 0.75% to be achieved and sustained. The data for injection into ohmic discharges is consistent with a one-dimensional transport model. Hot plasmas are not sustained if the ohmic current is turned off during the injection pulse, nor achieved by injecting into a cold currentless target plasma. Typical currentless plasmas sustained by neutral injection have parameters 21019 m-3 and Te ~ 15–20 eV.

Abstract

Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) experiment have been carried out in a wide range of Jet Plasmas. A high confinement region in the plasma core has been discovered during on‐axis heating of pellet fueled discharges. Sawttoth‐free periods and improved heating efficiency have been achieved in high current plasmas by heating during the current rise. Combined ICRH and neutral beam injection (NBI) in double null X‐point plasmas has yields D‐D fusion rates up to 2×1016 s−1 and electron and ion temperatures of 11keV and 17 keV respectively. Non‐thermal fusion reaction rates from (He3) D minority ICRH have been reproduced by a model which predicts Q∼0.7 for (D)T minority ICRH in JET. RF modulation studies have yielded power deposition profiles and heat transport coefficients inside the q=1 surface. Alignment of the antenna screen to the magnetic field minimises nickel impurity release.

Abstract

Two antennae have been installed in JET and operated to the maximum design capability of the generators. 4.5 MW, 10 MJ have been coupled to the plasma which heated up to a maximum stored energy of 3 MJ with central temperatures of T e0=5 keV and T i0=4 keV without increase of the relative impurity concentration. Degradation of energy confinement is observed according to an L mode scaling. The effect of k/sub //// shaping is discussed using a quadrupole antenna. Hydrogen and helium 3 minority heating regimes give similar results.

Abstract

Robust high performance plasma scenarios are being developed to exploit the unique capability of JET to operate with Tritium and Deuterium. In this context, real time control schemes are used to guide the plasma into the desired state and maintain it there. Other real time schemes detect undesirable behaviour and trigger appropriate actions to assure the best experimental results without unnecessary use of the limited neutron and Tritium budget. This paper discusses continuously active controllers and event/threshold detection algorithms triggering a variety of actions. Recent advances include: (i) Control of the degree of plasma detachment via impurity injection; (ii) ELM frequency control via gas/Pellet injection; (iii) Sawtooth pacing using ICRH modulation, (iv) control of the Hydrogen to Deuterium isotope ratio through gas injection and (v) the determination that a discharge is not evolving as desired, triggering a cascade of actions attempting to stop the plasma rapidly and safely, eventually triggering massive gas injection if a disruption is deemed unavoidable. For high power Deuterium-Tritium operation these control schemes need to be integrated into the plasma scenarios ensuring that they are mutually compatible. Abstract

A key issue for steady-state tokamak operation is to determine the edge conditions that are compatible both with good core confinement and with the power handling and plasma exhaust capabilities of the plasma facing components (PFCs) and divertor systems. A quantitative response to this open question will provide a robust scientific basis for reliable extrapolation of present regimes to an ITER compatible steady-state scenario. In this context, the JET programme addressing steady-state operation is focused on the development of non-inductive, high confinement plasmas with the constraints imposed by the PFCs. A new beryllium main chamber wall and tungsten divertor together with an upgrade of the heating/fuelling capability are currently in preparation at JET. Operation at higher power with this ITER-like wall will impose new constraints on non-inductive scenarios. Recent experiments have focused on the preparation for this new phase of JET operation. In this paper, progress in the development of advanced tokamak (AT) scenarios at JET is reviewed keeping this long-term objective in mind. The approach has consisted of addressing various critical issues separately during the 2006-2007 campaigns with a view to full scenario integration when the JET upgrades are complete. Regimes with internal transport barriers (ITBs) have been developed at q(95) similar to 5 and high triangularity, 3 (relevant to the ITER steady-state demonstration) by applying more than 30 MW of additional heating power reaching beta(N) similar to 2 at B-o similar to 3.1 T. Operating at higher 6 has allowed the edge pedestal and core densities to be increased pushing the ion temperature closer to that of the electrons. Although not yet fully integrated into a performance enhancing ITB scenario, Neon seeding has been successfully explored to increase the radiated power fraction (up to 60%), providing significant reduction of target tile power fluxes (and hence temperatures) and mitigation of edge localized mode (ELM) activity. At reduced toroidal magnetic field strength, high beta(N) regimes have been achieved and q-profile optimization investigated for use in steady-state scenarios. Values of beta(N) above the 'no-wall magnetohydrodynamic limit' (beta(N) similar to 3.0) have been sustained for a resistive current diffusion time in high-delta configurations (at 1.2 MA/1.8 T). In this scenario, ELM activity has been mitigated by applying magnetic perturbations using error field correction coils to provide ergodization of the magnetic field at the plasma edge. In a highly shaped, quasi-double null X-point configuration, ITBs have been generated on the ion heat transport channel and combined with 'grassy' ELMs with similar to 30 MW of applied heating power (at 1.2 MA/2.7 T, q(95) similar to 7). Advanced algorithms and system identification procedures have been developed with a view to developing simultaneously temperature and q-profile control in real-time. These techniques have so far been applied to the control of the q-profile evolution in JET AT scenarios.

Abstract

Runaway electrons (REs) created during tokamak disruptions pose a threat to the reliable operation of future larger machines. Experiments using shattered pellet injection (SPI) have been carried out at the JET tokamak to investigate ways to prevent their generation or suppress them if avoidance is not sufficient. Avoidance is possible if the SPI contains a sufficiently low fraction of high-Z material, or if it is fired early in advance of a disruption prone to runaway generation. These results are consistent with previous similar findings obtained with Massive Gas Injection. Suppression of an already accelerated beam is not efficient using High-Z material, but deuterium leads to harmless terminations without heat loads. This effect is due to the combination of a large magnetohydrodynamic instability scattering REs on a large area and the absence of runaway regeneration during the subsequent current collapse thanks to the flushing of high-Z impurities from the runaway companion plasma. This effect also works in situations where the runaway beam moves upwards and undergoes scraping-off on the wall.

Abstract

Asymmetries are a ubiquitous feature of the scrape-off layer (SOL) and divertor plasmas in any tokamak and are thought to be driven primarily by a variety of drift flows, the directions of which reverse with reversal of the main toroidal field. The understanding of precisely how these field dependent drifts combine to yield any given experimental observation is still very much incomplete. A recent campaign of reversed field operation at JET designed to match a variety of discharges to their more frequently executed forward field counterparts has been executed in an attempt to contribute to this understanding. Abstract

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract

JET has been designed to permit the study of plasmas in which α-particle heating is a significant part of the power balance. In order to have a sufficient thermonuclear yield and to trap the resulting α-particles, JET is similar in its dimensions and plasma current to the next generation of reactor-like devices such as NET, FER and INTOR. For this reason, the results from the study of the start-up of Ohmically heated plasmas in JET are highly relevant to the subject of this course. An impression might be given in what follows that JET is difficult to operate because the paper concentrates on the limits of operation. In fact JET has proven to be straightforward to operate and start-up has been highly reliable.

Abstract

Though helium plasmas are one option for the low activation phase of ITER, little effort has thus far been devoted to studying them in a large, diverted tokamak. A recent campaign on JET has therefore sought to address some of the important questions related to helium operation (He concentrations near 90%) in single null configuruations, particularly with regard to edge and divertor physics. This contribution compiles a selection of results from these experiments, in which, in each case, discharges have been chosen to match as closely as possible previous, well characterised D plasmas in both L and ELMing H-modes. These matched pulses are used to draw conclusions regarding the principle source and location of carbon production in D plasmas, to compare and contrast the mechanisms of the density limit and the detachment process in D and He, to investigate the nature of cross-field power transport in the SOL and to gain insight into the process by which ELM energy is transported to the divertor targets. Abstract

Ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) heating has been an essential component in the development of high power H-mode scenarios in the Jet European Torus ITER-like wall (JET-ILW). The ICRF performance was improved by enhancing the antenna-plasma coupling with dedicated main chamber gas injection, including the preliminary minimization of RF-induced plasma-wall interactions, while the RF heating scenarios where optimized for core impurity screening in terms of the ion cyclotron resonance position and the minority hydrogen concentration. The impact of ICRF heating on core impurity content in a variety of 2.5 MA JET-ILW H-mode plasmas will be presented, and the steps that were taken for optimizing ICRF heating in these experiments will be reviewed.

Abstract

Experiments in the JET tokamak with additional heating power (ion cyclotron resonance heating and/or neutral beam injection) above 5 MW show that the plasma can undergo a transition to a new regime. In this regime, the sawtooth instability is suppressed for periods of up to 1.6 S and the level of long-wavelength, coherent MHD activity is very low. An improvement in the glogal energy confinement time of up to 20% is observed. Possible mechanisms for the stabilization of the m = 1 instability and the implications for the near-ignition regime are discussed.

Abstract

ObjectiveAutomated surgical step recognition (SSR) using AI has been a catalyst in the “digitization” of surgery. However, progress has been limited to laparoscopy, with relatively few SSR tools in endoscopic surgery. This study aimed to create a SSR model for transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT), leveraging a novel application of transfer learning to reduce video dataset requirements.Materials and methodsRetrospective surgical videos of TURBT were manually annotated with the following steps of surgery: primary endoscopic evaluation, resection of bladder tumor, and surface coagulation. Manually annotated videos were then utilized to train a novel AI computer vision algorithm to perform automated video annotation of TURBT surgical video, utilizing a transfer-learning technique to pre-train on laparoscopic procedures. Accuracy of AI SSR was determined by comparison to human annotations as the reference standard.ResultsA total of 300 full-length TURBT videos (median 23.96 min; IQR 14.13–41.31 min) were manually annotated with sequential steps of surgery. One hundred and seventy-nine videos served as a training dataset for algorithm development, 44 for internal validation, and 77 as a separate test cohort for evaluating algorithm accuracy. Overall accuracy of AI video analysis was 89.6%. Model accuracy was highest for the primary endoscopic evaluation step (98.2%) and lowest for the surface coagulation step (82.7%).ConclusionWe developed a fully automated computer vision algorithm for high-accuracy annotation of TURBT surgical videos. This represents the first application of transfer-learning from laparoscopy-based computer vision models into surgical endoscopy, demonstrating the promise of this approach in adapting to new procedure types.

Abstract

Deliberate periodic movement (sweeping) of the high heat flux divertor strike lines in tokamak plasmas can be used to manage the heat fluxes experienced by exhaust handling plasma facing components, by spreading the heat loads over a larger surface area. Sweeping has recently been adopted as a routine part of the main high performance plasma configurations used on JET, and has enabled pulses with 30 MW plasma heating power and 10 MW radiation to run for 5 s without overheating the divertor tiles. We present analysis of the effectiveness of sweeping for divertor temperature control on JET, using infrared camera data and comparison with a simple 2D heat diffusion model. Around 50% reduction in tile temperature rise is obtained with 5.4 cm sweeping compared to the un-swept case, and the temperature reduction is found to scale slower than linearly with sweeping amplitude in both experiments and modelling. Compatibility of sweeping with high fusion performance is demonstrated, and effects of sweeping on the edge-localised mode behaviour of the plasma are reported and discussed. The prospects of using sweeping in future JET experiments with up to 40 MW heating power are investigated using a model validated against existing experimental data.

Abstract

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have found applications in many image processing tasks, such as feature extraction, image classification, and object recognition. It has also been shown that the inverse of CNNs, so- called deconvolutional neural networks, can be used for inverse problems such as plasma tomography. In essence, plasma tomography consists in reconstructing the 2D plasma profile on a poloidal cross-section of a fusion device, based on line-integrated measurements from multiple radiation detectors. Since the reconstruction process is computationally intensive, a deconvolutional neural network trained to produce the same results will yield a significant computational speedup, at the expense of a small error which can be assessed using different metrics. In this work, we discuss the design principles behind such networks, including the use of multiple layers, how they can be stacked, and how their dimensions can be tuned according to the number of detectors and the desired tomographic resolution for a given fusion device. We describe the application of such networks at JET and COMPASS, where at JET we use the bolometer system, and at COMPASS we use the soft X-ray diagnostic based on photodiode arrays.

Abstract

Achieving high neutron yields in today’s fusion research relies on high-power auxiliary heating in order to attain required core temperatures. This is usually achieved by means of high neutral beam (NB) and radio frequency (RF) power. Application of NB power is accompanied by production of fast beam ions and associated beam–target (BT) reactions. In standard JET operational conditions, deuterium (D) NBs are injected into D plasmas. The injected beams comprise D atoms at full, one-half and one-third injected energy. Typically, the full energy of the injected D beams is between 90 and 120 keV, providing 1.4–2.0 MW of heating, which is about half of the injected power. Half-energy D beams carry about one-third of the injected power and the rest of the power is carried by the third energy fraction of D beams. Under these conditions, thermal fusion reactions, i.e. those between plasma ions, and BT reactions are of the same order of magnitude. This study addresses important issues regarding the impact of density, central electron and ion temperatures and their ratio, T i(0)/T e(0), on fusion performance, measured by the total neutron yield and BT neutron counts. NB/RF synergistic effects are discussed as well. It is demonstrated that thermal fusion gain increases linearly with normalised plasma pressure, β N, and confinement, B t τ. The BT neutrons are, however, more difficult to predict and this task in general requires numerical treatment. In this study, BT neutrons in JET’s best-performing baseline and hybrid pulses are analysed and the underlying dependencies discussed. Central fast ion densities are found to decrease with increased density and density peaking. This is attributed to poorer beam penetration at high density. The BT reactions however are unchanged and can even increase if operating at higher core temperatures. An increase in the central ion temperature and T i(0)/T e(0) ratio leads to higher total and BT reaction rates whilst simultaneously the ratio of the BT to total neutron decreases significantly. NB/RF synergistic effects are found to have a negligible impact on total neutron rate. This can be explained by the reduced beam penetration in high-density conditions leading to lower central fast ion density.

Nevertheless, the onset of renal impairment often portends a worsening prognosis. Hepatorenal syndrome remains one of the most recognized and reported causes of renal impairment in cirrhosis. However, other causes of renal impairment occur and can be classified into prerenal, intrinsic or postrenal, which are the subjects of the present review.

Abstract

Introduction The primary objective of the ReIMAGINE Prostate Cancer Screening Study is to explore the uptake of an invitation to prostate cancer screening using MRI.Methods and analysis The ReIMAGINE Prostate Cancer Screening Study is a prospective single-centre feasibility study. Eligible men aged 50–75 years with no prior prostate cancer diagnosis or treatment will be identified through general practitioner practices and randomly selected for invitation. Those invited will be offered an MRI scan and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. The screening MRI scan consists of T2-weighted, diffusion-weighted and research-specific sequences, without the use of intravenous contrast agents. Men who screen positive on either MRI or PSA density will be recommended to have standard of care (National Health Service) tests for prostate cancer assessment, which includes multiparametric MRI. The study will assess the acceptability of an MRI-based prostate screening assessment and the prevalence of cancer detected in MRI-screened men. Summary statistics will be used to explore baseline characteristics in relation to acceptance rates and prevalence of cancer.Ethics and dissemination ReIMAGINE Prostate Cancer Screening is a single-site screening study to assess the feasibility of MRI as a screening tool for prostate cancer. Ethical approval was granted by London–Stanmore Research Ethics Committee Heath Research Authority (reference 19/LO/1129). Acute renal impairment is common in patients with chronic liver disease, occurring in approximately 19% of hospitalised patients with cirrhosis. A variety of types of renal impairment are recognised.
