Cosmic parallax is the change of angular separation between pair of sources at cosmological distances induced by an anisotropic expansion. An accurate astrometric experiment like Gaia could observe or put constraints on cosmic parallax. Examples of anisotropic cosmological models are Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi void models for off-center observers (introduced to explain the observed acceleration without the need for dark energy) and Bianchi metrics. If dark energy has an anisotropic equation of state, as suggested recently, then a substantial anisotropy could arise at $z \lesssim 1$ and escape the stringent constraints from the cosmic microwave background. We apply the needlet formalism to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 5-year data, looking for evidence of non-Gaussianity in the bispectrum of the needlet amplitudes. We confirm earlier findings of an asymmetry in the non-Gaussianity between the northern and southern galactic hemispheres. We attempt to isolate which scales and geometrical configurations are most anomalous, and find the bispectrum is most significant on large scales and in the more co-linear configurations, and also in the `squeezed' configurations. However, these anomalies do not appear to affect the estimate of the non-linear parameter $\fnl$, and we see no significant difference between its value measured in the two hemispheres., Comment: Published on MNRAS letters

How did the universe evolve? The fine angular scale (l>1000) temperature and polarization anisotropies in the CMB are a Rosetta stone for understanding the evolution of the universe. Through detailed measurements one may address everything from the physics of the birth of the universe to the history of star formation and the process by which galaxies formed. One may in addition track the evolution of the dark energy and discover the net neutrino mass. We are at the dawn of a new era in which hundreds of square degrees of sky can be mapped with arcminute resolution and sensitivities measured in microKelvin. Acquiring these data requires the use of special purpose telescopes such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), located in Chile, and the South Pole Telescope (SPT). These new telescopes are outfitted with a new generation of custom mm-wave kilo-pixel arrays. High precision measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies, as can be expected from the Planck satellite, will require high-accuracy theoretical predictions as well. One possible source of theoretical uncertainty is the numerical error in the output of the Boltzmann codes used to calculate angular power spectra. In this work, we carry out an extensive study of the numerical accuracy of the public Boltzmann code CAMB, and identify a set of parameters which determine the error of its output. We show that at the current default settings, the cosmological parameters extracted from data of future experiments like Planck can be biased by several tenths of a standard deviation for the six parameters of the standard Lambda-CDM model, and potentially more seriously for extended models. We perform an optimisation procedure that leads the code to achieve sufficient precision while at the same time keeping the computation time within reasonable limits. Our conclusion is that the contribution of numerical errors to the theoretical uncertainty of model predictions is well under control -- the main challenges for more accurate calculations of CMB spectra will be of an astrophysical nature instead., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Modern cosmology has sharpened questions posed for millennia about the origin of our cosmic habitat. The age-old questions have been transformed into two pressing issues primed for attack in the coming decade: How did the Universe begin? and What physical laws govern the Universe at the highest energies? The clearest window onto these questions is the pattern of polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is uniquely sensitive to primordial gravity waves. A detection of the special pattern produced by gravity waves would be not only an unprecedented discovery, but also a direct probe of physics at the earliest observable instants of our Universe. We look for a non-Gaussian signal in the WMAP 5-year temperature anisotropy maps by performing a needlet-based data analysis. We use the foreground-reduced maps obtained by the WMAP team through the optimal combination of the W, V and Q channels, and perform realistic non-Gaussian simulations in order to constrain the non-linear coupling parameter $\fnl$. We apply a third-order estimator of the needlet coefficients skewness and compute the $\chi^2$ statistics of its distribution. We obtain $-80<\fnl<120$ at 95% confidence level, which is consistent with a Gaussian distribution and comparable to previous constraints on the non-linear coupling. We then develop an estimator of $\fnl$ based on the same simulations and we find consistent constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity. We finally compute the three point correlation function in needlet space: the constraints on $\fnl$ improve to $-50<\fnl<110$ at 95% confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. We apply spherical needlets to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 5-year cosmic microwave background (CMB) dataset, to search for imprints of non-isotropic features in the CMB sky. We use the needlets localization properties to resolve peculiar features in the CMB sky and to study how these features contribute to the anisotropy power spectrum of the CMB. In addition to the now well-known "cold spot" of the CMB map in the southern hemisphere, we also find two hot spots at greater than 99% confidence level, again in the southern hemisphere and closer to the Galactic plane. While the cold spot contributes to the anisotropy power spectrum in the multipoles between l=6 to l=33, the hot spots are found to be dominating the anisotropy power in the range between l=6 and l=18. Masking both the cold and the two hot spots results in a reduction by about 15% in the amplitude of the angular power spectrum of CMB around l=10. The resulting changes to the cosmological parameters when the power spectrum is estimated masking these features (in addition to the WMAP team's KQ85 mask) are within the 1$\sigma$ errors published with the WMAP mask only. We also study the asymmetry between the angular power spectra evaluated on the northern and southern hemispheres. When the features detected by needlets are masked, we find that the difference in the power, measured in terms of the anisotropy variance between l=4 and l=18, is reduced by a factor 2. We study a set of universe models where the dark sector is described by a perfect fluid with an affine equation of state $P=P_0+\alpha \rho$, focusing specifically on cosmological perturbations in a flat universe. We perform a Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis spanning the full parameter space of the model using the WMAP 5 years data and the SDSS LRG4 survey. The affine fluid can either play the role of a unified dark matter (UDM), accounting for both dark matter and a cosmological constant, or work alongside cold dark matter (CDM), as a form of dark energy. A key ingredient is the sound speed, that depends on the nature of the fluid and that, for any given background model, adds a degree of freedom to the perturbations: in the barotropic case the square of the sound speed is simply equal to the affine parameter $\alpha$; if entropic perturbations are present the effective sound speed has to be specified as an additional parameter. In addition to the barotropic case, we consider the two limiting cases of effective sound speed equal to 0 or 1. For $\alpha=c_s^2=0$ our UDM model is equivalent to the standard $\Lambda$CDM with adiabatic perturbations. Apart of a trivial subcase, all models considered satisfy the data constraints, with quite standard values for the usual cosmological parameters. In general our analysis confirms that cosmological datasets require both a collisionless massive and cold component to form the potential wells that lead to structure formation, and an effective cosmological constant that drives the late accelerated expansion., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

It has been suggested recently that the change in cosmological redshift (the Sandage test of expansion) could be observed in the next generation of large telescopes and ultra-stable spectrographs. In a recent paper we estimated the change of peculiar velocity, i.e. the peculiar acceleration, in nearby galaxies and clusters and shown it to be of the same order of magnitude as the typical cosmological signal. Mapping the acceleration field allows for a reconstruction of the galactic gravitational potential without assuming virialization. In this paper we focus on the peculiar acceleration in our own Galaxy, modeled as a Kuzmin disc and a dark matter spherical halo. We estimate the peculiar acceleration for all known Galactic globular clusters and find some cases with an expected velocity shift in excess of 20 cm/sec for observations fifteen years apart, well above the typical cosmological acceleration. We then compare the predicted signal for a MOND (modified Newtonian dynamics) model in which the spherical dark matter halo is absent. We find that the signal pattern is qualitatively different, showing that the peculiar acceleration field could be employed to test competing theories of gravity. We explore the dynamics of cosmological models with two coupled dark components with energy densities $\rho_A$ and $\rho_B$. We assume that the coupling is of the form $Q=Hq(\rho_A,\rho_B)$, so that the dynamics of the two components turns out to be scale independent, i.e. does not depend explicitly on the Hubble scalar $H$. With this assumption, we focus on the general linear coupling $q=q_o+q_A\rho_A+q_B\rho_B$, which may be seen as arising from any $q(\rho_A,\rho_B)$ at late time and leads in general to an effective cosmological constant. In the second part of the paper we consider observational constraints on the form of the coupling from SN Ia data, assuming that one of the components is cold dark matter. We find that the constant part of the coupling function is unconstrained by SN Ia data and, among typical linear coupling functions, the one proportional to the dark energy density $\rho_{A}$ is preferred in the strong coupling regime, $|q_{A}|>1$. While phantom models favor a positive coupling function, in non-phantom models, not only a negative coupling function is allowed, but the uncoupled sub-case falls at the border of the likelihood., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, considerable changes to the text

It has been proposed recently to observe the change in cosmological redshift of distant galaxies or quasars with the next generation of large telescope and ultra-stable spectrographs (the so-called Sandage-Loeb test). Here we investigate the possibility of observing the change in peculiar velocity in nearby clusters and galaxies. This ``peculiar acceleration'' could help reconstructing the gravitational potential without assuming virialization. We show that the expected effect is of the same order of magnitude of the cosmological velocity shift. We discuss Spherical Needlets and their properties. Needlets are a form of spherical wavelets which do not rely on any kind of tangent plane approximation and enjoy good localization properties in both pixel and harmonic space; moreover needlets coefficients are asymptotically uncorrelated at any fixed angular distance, which makes their use in statistical procedures very promising. In view of these properties, we believe needlets may turn out to be especially useful in the analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data on the incomplete sky, as well as of other cosmological observations. As a final advantage, we stress that the implementation of needlets is computationally very convenient and may rely completely on standard data analysis packages such as HEALPix., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We explore the possibility that a scalar field with appropriate Lagrangian can mimic a perfect fluid with an affine barotropic equation of state. The latter can be thought of as a generic cosmological dark component evolving as an effective cosmological constant plus a generalized dark matter. As such, it can be used as a simple, phenomenological model for either dark energy or unified dark matter. Furthermore, it can approximate (up to first order in the energy density) any barotropic dark fluid with arbitrary equation of state. We find that two kinds of Lagrangian for the scalar field can reproduce the desired behaviour: a quintessence-like with a hyperbolic potential, or a purely kinetic k-essence one. We discuss the behaviour of these two classes of models from the point of view of the cosmological background, and we give some hints on their possible clustering properties., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. The variation of the expansion rate of the Universe with time produces an evolution in the cosmological redshift of distant sources (for example quasar Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption lines), that might be directly observed by future ultra stable, high-resolution spectrographs (such as CODEX) coupled to extremely large telescopes (such as European Southern Observatory's Extremely Large Telescope, ELT). This would open a new window to explore the physical mechanism responsible for the current acceleration of the Universe. We investigate the evolution of cosmological redshift from a variety of dark energy models, and compare it with simulated data. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis and discuss the prospects for constraining the parameters of these models and for discriminating among competing candidates. We find that, because of parameter degeneracies, and of the inherent technical difficulties involved in this kind of observations, the uncertainties on parameter reconstruction can be rather large unless strong external priors are assumed. However, the method could be a valuable complementary cosmological tool, and give important insights on the dynamics of dark energy, not obtainable using other probes., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. This paper is one of a series describing the performance and accuracy of map-making codes as assessed by the Planck CTP working group. We compare the performance of multiple codes written by different groups for making polarized maps from Planck-sized, all-sky cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. Three of the codes are based on destriping algorithm, whereas the other three are implementations of a maximum-likelihood algorithm. Previous papers in the series described simulations at 100 GHz (Poutanen et al. 2006) and 217 GHz (Ashdown et al. 2006). In this paper we make maps (temperature and polarisation) from the simulated one-year observations of four 30 GHz detectors of Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI). We used Planck Level S simulation pipeline to produce the observed time-ordered-data streams (TOD). Our previous studies considered polarisation observations for the CMB only. For this paper we increased the realism of the simulations and included polarized galactic foregrounds to our sky model. Our simulated TODs comprised of dipole, CMB, diffuse galactic emissions, extragalactic radio sources, and detector noise. The strong subpixel signal gradients arising from the foreground signals couple to the output map through the map-making and cause an error (signal error) in the maps. Destriping codes have smaller signal error than the maximum-likelihood codes. We examined a number of schemes to reduce this error. We consider the hypothesis that dark energy and dark matter are the two faces of a single dark component, a unified dark matter (UDM) that we assume can be modeled by the affine equation of state (EoS) $P= p_0 +\alpha \rho$, resulting in an {\it effective cosmological constant} $\rho_\Lambda=-p_0/(1+\alpha)$. The affine EoS arises from the simple assumption that the speed of sound is constant; it may be seen as an approximation to an unknown barotropic EoS $P=P(\rho)$, and may as well represent the tracking solution for the dynamics of a scalar field with appropriate potential. Furthermore, in principle the affine EoS allows the UDM to be phantom. We constrain the parameters of the model, $\alpha$ and $\Omega_\Lambda$, using data from a suite of different cosmological observations, and perform a comparison with the standard $\Lambda$CDM model, containing both cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. First considering a flat cosmology, we find that the UDM model with affine EoS fits the joint observations very well, better than $\Lambda$CDM, with best fit values $\alpha=0.01 \pm 0.02$ and $\Omega_\Lambda=0.70 \pm 0.04$ (95% confidence intervals). The standard model (best fit $\Omega_\Lambda=0.71\pm 0.04$), having one less parameter, is preferred by a Bayesian model comparison. However, the affine EoS is at least as good as the standard model if a flat curvature is not assumed as a prior for $\Lambda$CDM. For the latter, the best fit values are $\Omega_K=-0.02^{+0.01}_{-0.02} $ and $\Omega_\Lambda=0.71 \pm 0.04$, i.e. a closed model is preferred. I briefly review some of the main scientific outputs expected from the upcoming Planck mission. Planck will map the CMB sky with 5' resolution and $\mu$K sensitivity, with minimal foreground contribution and superb control on systematics. It will collect the entire information enclosed in the temperature primary anisotropy signal and will also get a good measurement of the polarized component of the CMB. Our detection makes use of a novel statistical method based on a new construction of spherical wavelets, called needlets. The null hypothesis (no ISW) is excluded at more than 99.7% confidence. When we compare the measured cross-correlation with the theoretical predictions of standard, flat cosmological models with a generalized dark energy component parameterized by its density, $\omde$, equation of state $w$ and speed of sound $\cs2$, we find $0.3\leq\omde\leq0.8$ at 95% c.l., independently of $\cs2$ and $w$. If dark energy is assumed to be a cosmological constant ($w=-1$), the bound on density shrinks to $0.41\leq\omde\leq 0.79$. Models without dark energy are excluded at more than $4\sigma$. We compare the performance of multiple codes written by different groups for making polarized maps from Planck-sized, all-sky cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. Three of the codes are based on a destriping algorithm; the other three are implementations of an optimal maximum-likelihood algorithm. Time-ordered data (TOD) were simulated using the Planck Level-S simulation pipeline. Several cases of temperature-only data were run to test that the codes could handle large datasets, and to explore effects such as the precision of the pointing data. Based on these preliminary results, TOD were generated for a set of four 217 GHz detectors (the minimum number required to produce I, Q, and U maps) under two different scanning strategies, with and without noise. Following correction of various problems revealed by the early simulation, all codes were able to handle the large data volume that Planck will produce. A cosmological model with total density close to critical (and flat geometry), dominated by dark matter and dark energy of unknown nature, and consistent with the basic predictions of the inflationary scenario is a very good fit to a variety of cosmological probes: the anisotropy of the CMB, the large scale distribution of matter, the luminosity distance of high-redshift type Ia supernovae and so on. We present ROMA, a parallel code to produce joint optimal temperature and polarisation maps out of multidetector CMB observations. ROMA is a fast, accurate and robust implementation of the iterative generalised least squares approach to map-making. We have compared the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropy maps made from one-year time ordered data (TOD) streams that simulated observations of the originally planned 100 GHz Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI). The maps were made with three different codes. Two of these, ROMA and MapCUMBA, were implementations of maximum-likelihood (ML) map-making, whereas the third was an implementation of the destriping algorithm. The purpose of this paper is to compare these two methods, ML and destriping, in terms of the maps they produce and the angular power spectrum estimates derived from these maps. The difference in the maps produced by the two ML codes was found to be negligible. As expected, ML was found to produce maps with lower residual noise than destriping. In addition to residual noise, the maps also contain an error which is due to the effect of subpixel structure in the signal on the map-making method. This error is larger for ML than for destriping. If this error is not corrected a bias will be introduced in the power spectrum estimates. This study is related to Planck activities., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures. To be published in A&A. Several recent papers have made claims about the detection of an asymmetric distribution of large scale power in the cosmic microwave background anisotropy as measured by the WMAP satellite. In this paper, we investigate how the estimates of particular cosmological parameters vary when inferred from power spectra computed separately on the northern and southern hemispheres in three frames of reference. We focus our investigation on the three specific parameters to which the analysis is most sensitive, the spectral index n, the amplitude of fluctuations A and the optical depth tau. When using a gaussian prior on the spectral index n centred at n=1 with a flat prior on the optical depth tau, the preferred value for the optical depth (derived in the reference frame of maximum asymmetry) in the north is tau=0 with upper limit tau<0.08, whereas in the south we find tau=0.24 +0.06/-0.07 (68% confidence level). The latter result is inconsistent with tau=0 at the 2 sigma level. The estimated optical depth of tau=0.17 on the (nearly) full sky found by the WMAP collaboration and confirmed independently here, could thus in large part originate in structure associated with the southern hemisphere. Furthermore, putting a prior on tau, we find values of the spectral index which are inconsistent between the opposite hemispheres. The exact values depend on the prior on tau. While our results should not be considered more than suggestive, the significance of the parameter differences in the two hemispheres being typically of order 2 sigma, if they are confirmed with the higher sensitivity WMAP 2-year data then it may be necessary to question the assumption of cosmological isotropy and the conceptual framework within which studies of the CMB anisotropy are made., Comment: submitted to MNRAS

Measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) allow high precision observation of the Last Scattering Surface at redshift $z\sim$1100. After the success of the NASA satellite COBE, that in 1992 provided the first detection of the CMB anisotropy, results from many ground-based and balloon-borne experiments have showed a remarkable consistency between different results and provided quantitative estimates of fundamental cosmological properties. During 2003 the team of the NASA WMAP satellite has released the first improved full-sky maps of the CMB since COBE, leading to a deeper insight into the origin and evolution of the Universe. The ESA satellite Planck, scheduled for launch in 2007, is designed to provide the ultimate measurement of the CMB temperature anisotropy over the full sky, with an accuracy that will be limited only by astrophysical foregrounds, and robust detection of polarisation anisotropy. We discuss the derivation of the analytic properties of the cross-power spectrum estimator from multi-detector CMB anisotropy maps. The method is computationally convenient and it provides unbiased estimates under very broad assumptions. We also propose a new procedure for testing for the presence of residual bias due to inappropriate noise subtraction in pseudo-$C_{\ell}$ estimates. We derive the analytic behavior of this procedure under the null hypothesis, and use Monte Carlo simulations to investigate its efficiency properties, which appear very promising. For instance, for full sky maps with isotropic white noise, the test is able to identify an error of 1% on the noise amplitude estimate., Comment: replaced with version published in JCAP. In the 1998-99 flight, BOOMERanG has produced maps of $\sim 4 %$ of the sky at high Galactic latitudes, at frequencies of 90, 150, 240 and 410 GHz, with resolution $\simgt 10'$. The faint structure of the Cosmic Microwave Background at horizon and sub-horizon scales is evident in these maps. These maps compare well to the maps recently obtained at lower frequencies by the WMAP experiment. Here we compare the amplitude and morphology of the structures observed in the two sets of maps. We describe the Millimeter wave Anisotropy eXperiment IMaging Array (MAXIMA), a balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the temperature anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) on angular scales of 10' to 5 degrees . MAXIMA mapped the CMB using 16 bolometric detectors in spectral bands centered at 150 GHz, 240 GHz, and 410 GHz, with 10' resolution at all frequencies. The combined receiver sensitivity to CMB anisotropy was ~40 microK/rt(sec). Systematic parasitic contributions were minimized by using four uncorrelated spatial modulations, thorough crosslinking, multiple independent CMB observations, heavily baffled optics, and strong spectral discrimination. Pointing reconstruction was accurate to 1', and absolute calibration was better than 4%. Two MAXIMA flights with more than 8.5 hours of CMB observations have mapped a total of 300 deg^2 of the sky in regions of negligible known foreground emission. BOOMERANG is a balloon-borne telescope designed for long duration (LDB) flights around Antarctica. The second LDB Flight of BOOMERANG took place in January 2003. The primary goal of this flight was to measure the polarization of the CMB. The receiver uses polarization sensitive bolometers at 145 GHz. Polarizing grids provide polarization sensitivity at 245 and 345 GHz. We describe the BOOMERANG telescope noting changes made for 2003 LDB flight, and discuss some of the issues involved in the measurement of polarization with bolometers. We investigate the accuracy attainable by forthcoming space-based observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy in constraining the dark energy density parameter $\Oq$ and equation of state $\wq=p_{\rm Q}/\rho_{\rm Q}$. Despite degeneracies among parameters, it is possible for high precision observations such as those from WMAP and Planck to provide interesting information on the nature of the dark energy. Furthermore, we show that imposing a flat universe constraint makes it possible to obtain tight limits in the space of dark energy parameters even from the CMB alone., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Observations of the CMB can be contaminated by diffuse foreground emission from sources such as Galactic dust and synchrotron radiation. In these cases, the morphology of the contaminating source is known from observations at different frequencies, but not its amplitude at the frequency of interest for the CMB. We develop a technique for accounting for the effects of such emission in this case, and for simultaneously estimating the foreground amplitude in the CMB observations. We apply the technique to CMB data from the MAXIMA-1 experiment, using maps of Galactic dust emission from combinations of IRAS and DIRBE observations, as well as compilations of Galactic synchrotron emission observations. The spectrum of the dust emission over the 150--450 GHz observed by MAXIMA is consistent with preferred models but the effect on CMB power spectrum observations is negligible., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. Heavy flavours production in e-p DIS is studied at intermediate values of the transferred four-momentum square, under the assumption of boson-gluon-fusion mechanism dominance (no intrinsic heavy flavours contributions). Following HERA experiments our interest is focused, in the present paper, on charmonium production in lepton-proton collisions. Inelastic J/\psi electroproduction is quite difficult to be measured due to the low rates of events; almost all experimental studies are indeed performed in photoproduction regime. J/\psi resonance is considered as the product of the hadronization of a c \bar{c} pair generated via boson-gluon fusion. The leading order contribution to the differential cross section, with respect to virtual photon-proton center of mass energy W and transferred four-momentum squared Q^2, is written as the sum of two terms related to a colour singlet and a colour octet c \bar{c} pair production respectively. This expression contains two-gluons contributions and depends on three parameters; two of them are related to the hadronization fractions in charmonium states for the c \bar{c} pair (colour singlet and colour octet), while the third parameter takes into accout possible ``hot-spot'' effects. The values of these parameters are estimated by mean of a fit to the experimental data collected by H1 collaboration at HERA. We describe different methods for estimating the bispectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background data. In particular we construct a minimum variance estimator for the flat-sky limit and compare results with previously-studied frequentist methods. Application to the MAXIMA dataset shows consistency with primordial Gaussianity. Weak quadratic non-Gaussianity is characterised by a tunable parameter $f_{NL}$, corresponding to non-Gaussianity at a level $\sim 10^{-5}f_{NL}$ (ratio of non-Gaussian to Gaussian terms), and we find limits of $|f_{NL}|<950$ for the minimum-variance estimator and $|f_{NL}|<1650$ for the usual frequentist estimator. These are the tightest limits on primordial non-Gaussianity which include the full effects of the radiation transfer function., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures

A dynamical scalar field represents the simplest generalization of a pure Cosmological Constant as a candidate to explain the recent evidence in favour of the accelerated cosmic expansion. We review the dynamical properties of such a component, and argue that, even if the background expectation value of this field is fixed and the equation of state is the same as a Cosmological Constant, scalar field fluctuations can still be used to distinguish the two components. We compare predicted spectra of Cosmic Microvave Background (CMB) anisotropies in tracking scalar field cosmologies with the present CMB data, in order to get constraints on the amount and equation of state of dark energy. High precision experiments like SNAP, {\sc Planck} and {\sc SNfactory}, together with the data on Large Scale Structure, are needed to probe this issue with the necessary accuracy. Here we show the intriguing result that, with a strong prior on the value of the Hubble constant today, the assumption of a flat universe, and consistency relations between amplitude and spectral index of primordial gravitational waves, the present CMB data at $1\sigma$ give indication of a dark energy equation of state larger than -1, while the ordinary Cosmological Constant is recovered at $2\sigma$., Comment: 4 pages including 2 figures, Dark Matter 2002 proceedings, Nucl.Phys.B in press

We use an iterative generalized least squares map-making algorithm, in conjunction with Monte Carlo techniques, to obtain estimates of the angular power spectrum from cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. This is achieved by characterizing and removing the instrumental noise contribution in multipole space. This technique produces unbiased estimates and can be applied to an arbitrary experiment. In this paper, we use it on realistic simulations of Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) observations, showing that it can lead to fast and reliable estimation of the CMB angular power spectrum from megapixel maps., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.
