Abstract: We analyze the BOOMERanG 2003 (B03) 145 GHz temperature map to constrain the amplitude of a non Gaussian, primordial contribution to CMB fluctuations. We perform a pixel space analysis restricted to a portion of the map chosen in view of high sensitivity, very low foreground contamination and tight control of systematic effects. We set up an estimator based on the three Minkowski functionals which relies on high quality simulated data, including non Gaussian CMB maps. We find good agreement with the Gaussian hypothesis and derive the first limits based on BOOMERanG data for the non linear coupling parameter f_NL as -300, Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ. Abstract: We present the final results from the XMM-Newton validation follow-up of new Planck galaxy cluster candidates. We observed 15 new candidates, detected with signal-to-noise ratios between 4.0 and 6.1 in the 15.5-month nominal Planck survey. The candidates were selected using ancillary data flags derived from the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) and Digitized Sky Survey all-sky maps, with the aim of pushing into the low SZ flux, high-z regime and testing RASS flags as indicators of candidate reliability. Fourteen new clusters were detected by XMM-Newton, ten single clusters and two double systems. Redshifts from X-ray spectroscopy lie in the range 0.2 to 0.9, with six clusters at z > 0.5. Estimated masses (M500) range from 2.5 × 1014 to 8 × 1014 M⊙. We discuss our results in the context of the full XMM-Newton validation programme, in which 51 new clusters have been detected. This includes four double and two triple systems, some of which are chance projections on the sky of clusters at different redshifts. We find thatassociation with a source from the RASS-Bright Source Catalogue is a robust indicator of the reliability of a candidate, whereas association with a source from the RASS-Faint Source Catalogue does not guarantee that the SZ candidate is a bona fide cluster. Nevertheless, most Planck clusters appear in RASS maps, with a significance greater than 2σ being a good indication that the candidate is a real cluster. Candidate validation from association with SDSS galaxy overdensity at z > 0.5 is also discussed. The full sample gives a Planck sensitivity threshold of Y500 ~ 4 × 10-4 arcmin2, with indication for Malmquist bias in the YX-Y500 relation below this threshold. The corresponding mass threshold depends on redshift. Systems with M500 > 5 × 1014 M⊙ at z > 0.5 are easily detectable with Planck. The newly-detected clusters follow the YX-Y500 relation derived from X-ray selected samples. Compared to X-ray selected clusters, the new SZ clusters have a lower X-ray luminosity on average for their mass. There is no indication of departure from standard self-similar evolution in the X-ray versus SZ scaling properties. In particular, there is no significant evolution of the YX / Y500 ratio.

Abstract: We present the BOOMERanG-03 experiment and maps of the Stokes parameters I, Q, U of the microwave sky obtained during a 14 day balloon flight in 2003. Three regions of the southern sky were surveyed: a deep survey (~ 90 square degrees) and a shallow survey (~ 750 square degrees) at high Galactic latitudes (both centered at RA ~ 5.5 h, dec ~ -45 deg) and a survey of ~ 300 square degrees across the Galactic plane at RA ~ 9.1 h, dec ~ -47 deg. All three surveys were carried out in three wide frequency bands centered at 145, 245 and 345 GHz, with an angular resolution of ~ 10'. The 145 GHz maps of Stokes I are dominated by Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy, which is mapped with high signal to noise ratio. The measured anisotropy pattern is consistent with the pattern measured in the same region by BOOMERanG-98 and by WMAP. The 145 GHz maps of Stokes Q and U provide a robust statistical detection of polarization of the CMB when subjected to a power spectrum analysis. This amplitude of the polarization is consistent with that of the CMB in the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological scenario. At 145 GHz, in the CMB surveys, the intensity and polarization of the astrophysical foregrounds are found to be negligible with respect to the cosmological signal. At 245 and 345 GHz we detect ISD emission correlated to the 3000 GHz IRAS/DIRBE maps, and give upper limits for any other non-CMB component. We also present intensity maps of the surveyed section of the Galactic plane. 155. The integrated bispectrum as a test of cosmic microwave background non-Gaussianity: detection power and limits on fNL with WMAP data

Abstract: We propose a fast and efficient bispectrum statistic for cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies to constrain the amplitude of the primordial non-Gaussian signal measured in terms of the non-linear coupling parameter f$_{NL$. We show how the method can achieve a remarkable computational advantage by focusing on subsets of the multipole configurations, where the non-Gaussian signal is more concentrated. The detection power of the test increases roughly linearly with the maximum multipole, as shown in the ideal case of an experiment without noise and gaps. The CPU-time scales as l$^3$$_max$ instead of l$^5$$_max$ for the full bispectrum, which for Planck resolution l$_max$ \~{} 3000 means an improvement in speed of a factor of 10$^7$ compared with the full bispectrum analysis with minor loss in precision. This approach is complementary to the fast method introduced by Komatsu, Spergel \amp Wandelt using a reconstruction of the primordial fluctuation field. We find that the introduction of a galactic cut partially destroys the optimality of the configuration, which will then need to be dealt with in the future. We find for an ideal experiment with l$_max$ = 2000 that upper limits of f$_NL$ \lt 8 can be obtained at 1$\sigma$. For the case of the WMAP experiment, we would be able to put limits of |f$_NL$| \lt 40 if no galactic cut were present. Using the real data with a galactic cut, we obtain an estimate of -80 \lt f$_NL$ \lt 80 and -160 \lt f$_NL$ \lt 160 at 1 and 2$\sigma$, respectively. }

Abstract: Resumen El artículo discute la pertinencia de los llamados indicadores refinados de fecundidad para evaluar el nivel de la fecundidad en los países de América Latina. La principal ventaja de estos indicadores es su capacidad de identificar cuánto del cambio en la tasa global de fecundidad se debe a cambios en la intensidad y cuánto a cambios en el calendario. Los países de muy baja fecundidad están culminando un proceso de postergación de la maternidad que solo pudo ser descrito adecuadamente una vez que surgieron estos indicadores. A pesar de que en América Latina hay indicios de que en algunos países se comienza a procesar la postergación de la fecundidad, es aún muy limitada la capacidad de elaborar indicadores refinados y no abunda la discusión sobre sus virtudes, desventajas y potencialidades. Con la intención de sistematizar la acumulación al respecto y fomentar el debate, en este artículo se presentan las principales características de estas medidas y se discute cuáles indicadores serían los más adecuados para evaluar las tendencias de la fecundidad en la región y cómo podrían difundirse de modo de evitar equívocos en su interpretación. Nuestra principal conclusión es que a corto plazo resulta más urgente contar con indicadores de intensidad y calendario por orden de nacimiento que apelar a medidas sintéticas refinadas.

157. A Bimodal Pattern in Age at First Birth in Southern Cone Countries?

Abstract: Recent evidence confirms that the postponement transition has begun in some Latin American countries. As the mean age at first birth increases, dispersion around the mean value might also increase, reflecting a growing heterogeneity in the timing of transition to motherhood. In fact, in countries from the Southern Cone, recently available data suggest the emergence of a specific pattern that not only reflects heterogeneity, but also a polarization around two "crests;" the first one at the end of adolescence and the second one toward the end of the twenties. Using census data, vital statistics and household surveys from three countries, we study the extent to which this process consolidates a recognizable pattern in the timing of first birth in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, visible through age-specific conditional rates of first births. 158. Arsenmedaite, Mn62+As5+Si5O18OH, the arsenic analogue of medaite, from the Molinello mine, Liguria, Italy: occurrence and crystal structure

Abstract: The new mineral species arsenmedaite, ideally Mn 6 2 + As 5 + Si 5 O 18 ( OH ) , has been discovered in quartz veinlets in the braunite ore deposit of the Molinello mine, Graveglia Valley, Ne, Genova, Liguria, Italy. It occurs as orange-reddish prismatic crystals, up to 200 µm in length, with a vitreous lustre, associated with braunite, quartz, calcite, As-rich medaite, calcian rhodocrosite, talc, and ganophyllite. Electron microprobe analysis of arsenmedaite gave (in wt%): V2O5 = 1.84, As2O5 = 6.81, SiO2 = 38.75, CaO = 0.70, MnO = 50.28, H2Ocalc = 1.42, total 99.80. On the basis of SMe = 12 atoms per formula unit, the chemical formula of arsenmedaite is (Mn5.89Ca0.10)S5.99[(As0.49V0.17)S0.66Si5.35]S6.01O17.69(OH)1.31. The main diffraction lines are [d in Å (relative intensity) hkl]: 3.266 (100) 081, 3.159 (72) 052, 3.094 (82) -221, 2.963 (83) 091, 2.935 (79) 211, 2.788 (68) 072, and 2.612 (98) 082. The crystal-structure study gives a monoclinic unit cell, space group P21/n, with a = 6.7099(3), b = 29.001(1), c = 7.5668(3) Å, ß = 95.469(3)°, V = 1465.7(1) Å3, Z = 4. The crystal structure has been solved and refined to R 1 = 0.062 on the basis of 3526 reflections with F o > 4s(F o) and 287 parameters. Arsenmedaite is isotypic with medaite. In its crystal structure, six- to seven-fold coordinated Mn-centred polyhedra form wavy ribbons linked to TO4 tetrahedra centred by Si and (As,V). Its formation is likely related to the late-stage circulation of As- and Mn-rich hydrothermal fluids during the final stages of the Alpine tectono-metamorphic evolution of the manganese ore deposits of Eastern Liguria.

Abstract: A comparison is presented of Sunyaev-Zeldovich measurements for 11 galaxy clusters as obtained by Planck and by the ground-based interferometer, the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager. Assuming a universal spherically-symmetric Generalised Navarro, Frenk and White (GNFW) model for the cluster gas pressure profile, we jointly constrain the integrated Compton-Y parameter (Y 500) and the scale radius (θ500) of each cluster. Our resulting constraints in the Y500-θ500 2D parameter space derived from the two instruments overlap significantly for eight of the clusters, although, overall, there is a tendency for AMI to find the Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal to be smaller in angular size and fainter than Planck. Significant discrepancies exist for the three remaining clusters in the sample, namely A1413, A1914, and the newly-discovered Planck cluster PLCKESZ G139.59+24.18. The robustness of the analysis of both the Planck and AMI data is demonstrated through the use of detailed simulations, which also discount confusion from residual point (radio) sources and from diffuse astrophysical foregrounds as possible explanations for the discrepancies found. For a subset of our cluster sample, we have investigated the dependence of our results on the assumed pressure profile by repeating the analysis adopting the best-fitting GNFW profile shape which best matches X-ray observations. Adopting the best-fitting profile shape from the X-ray data does not, in general, resolve the discrepancies found in this subset of five clusters. Abstract: A Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) estimator is applied to the WMAP 5 year low resolution maps to compute the CMB angular power spectra at large scales for both temperature and polarization. Estimates and error bars for the six angular power spectra are provided and compared, when possible, to those obtained by the WMAP team, without finding any inconsistency. The conditional likelihood slices are also computed for the $C_{\ell}$ of all the six power spectra from $\ell =2$ to 10 through a pixel based likelihood code. Both the codes treat the covariance for $(T,Q,U)$ in a single matrix without employing any approximation. The inputs of both the codes (foreground reduced maps and related covariances) are provided by the WMAP team. The peaks of the likelihood slices are always consistent with the QML estimates within the error bars, however an excellent agreement occurs when the QML estimates are used as fiducial power spectrum instead of the best-fit theoretical power spectrum. By the full computation of the conditional likelihood on the estimated spectra, the value of the temperature quadrupole $C_{\ell=2}^{TT}$ is found to be less than $2 \sigma$ away from the WMAP 5 yrs $\Lambda$CDM best-fit value. The $BB$ spectrum is found well consistent with zero and upper limits on the B-modes are provided. The parity odd signals $TB$ and $EB$ are found consistent with zero., Comment: 9 pages, 8 Figures. Abstract: We develop a new interpolation scheme, based on harmonic inpainting, for reconstructing the cosmic microwave background temperature data within the Galaxy mask from the data outside the mask. We find that, for scale-invariant isotropic random Gaussian fluctuations, the developed algorithm reduces the errors in the reconstructed map for the odd-parity modes significantly for azimuthally symmetric masks with constant galactic latitudes. Abstract: We discuss Spherical Needlets and their properties. Needlets are a form of spherical wavelets which do not rely on any kind of tangent plane approximation and enjoy good localization properties in both pixel and harmonic space; moreover needlets coefficients are asymptotically uncorrelated at any fixed angular distance, which makes their use in statistical procedures very promising. In view of these properties, we believe needlets may turn out to be especially useful in the analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data on the incomplete sky, as well as of other cosmological observations. As a final advantage, we stress that the implementation of needlets is computationally very convenient and may rely completely on standard data analysis packages such as HEALPix.

Abstract: We analyze the BOOMERanG 2003 (B03) 145 GHz temperature map to constrain the amplitude of a non Gaussian, primordial contribution to CMB fluctuations. We perform a pixel space analysis restricted to a portion of the map chosen in view of high sensitivity, very low foreground contamination and tight control of systematic effects. We set up an estimator based on the three Minkowski functionals which relies on high quality simulated data, including non Gaussian CMB maps. We find good agreement with the Gaussian hypothesis and derive the first limits based on BOOMERanG data for the non linear coupling parameter f_NL as -300

Abstract: We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130◦ ≤ l ≤ 230◦ and −50◦ ≤ b ≤ −10◦). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (ν < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature Te from Hα and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained Te ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% ( fd = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5±1.5 GHz.We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. Abstract: We report on observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) obtained during the January 2003 flight of Boomerang . These results are derived from 195 hours of observation with four 145 GHz Polarization Sensitive Bolometer (PSB) pairs, identical in design to the four 143 GHz Planck HFI polarized pixels. The data include 75 hours of observations distributed over 1.84% of the sky with an additional 120 hours concentrated on the central portion of the field, itself representing 0.22% of the full sky. From these data we derive an estimate of the angular power spectrum of temperature fluctuations of the CMB in 24 bands over the multipole range (50 < l < 1500). A series of features, consistent with those expected from acoustic oscillations in the primordial photon-baryon fluid, are clearly evident in the power spectrum, as is the exponential damping of power on scales smaller than the photon mean free path at the epoch of last scattering (l > 900). As a consistency check, the collaboration has performed two fully independent analyses of the time ordered data, which are found to be in excellent agreement., 11 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: The current study was performed to evaluate the in vivo efficiency of a new nano-sized contrast agent called paramagnetic Solid Lipid Nanoparticles, pSLNs, having promising relaxivity properties for Magnetic Resonance Imaging application. Good stability and stealth properties toward macrophage uptake have been demonstrated. An in vivo MRI study resulted in an improved signal enhancement in the tumor tissue particularly when folate as targeting ligand was used to decorate the nanoparticles surface. Afterward, the biodistribution of pSLNs in several organs was investigated. The accumulation of pSLNs in kidneys, femoral bones, spleen and brain was quite low while high tropism of pSLNs was found for the liver. Abstract: We report measurements of the CMB polarization power spectra from the January 2003 Antarctic flight of BOOMERANG. The primary results come from six days of observation of a patch covering 0.22% of the sky centered near R.A. = 82.5 deg., Dec= -45 deg. The observations were made using four pairs of polarization sensitive bolometers operating in bands centered at 145 GHz. Using two independent analysis pipelines, we measure a non-zero signal in the range 100< l contribution, and a 2-sigma upper limit of 7.0 uK^2 for the spectrum. Estimates of foreground intensity fluctuations and the non-detection of and signals rule out any significant contribution from galactic foregrounds. The results are consistent with a Lambda-CDM cosmology seeded by adiabatic perturbations. Abstract: We use the Point Source Catalogue Redshift Survey galaxy redshift catalogue combined with constrained simulations based on the IRAS 1.2-Jy galaxy density field to estimate the contribution of hot gas in the local universe to the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect on a large scale. We produce a full-sky HEALPIX map predicting the SZ effect from clusters as well as diffuse hot gas within 80h-1Mpc. Performing cross-correlation tests between this map and the WMAP data in pixel, harmonic and wavelet space we can put an upper limit on the effect. We conclude that the SZ effect from diffuse gas in the local universe cannot be detected in current cosmic microwave background (CMB) data and is not a large-scale contaminating factor (l < 60) in studies of CMB angular anisotropies. We derive an upper limit for the mean temperature decrement of ΔT < 0.33μK at the 2σ confidence level for the 61-GHz frequency channel. However, for future high-sensitivity experiments observing at a wider range of frequencies, the predicted large-scale SZ effect could be of importance.

Abstract: We test the consistency of estimates of the non-linear coupling constant f_{NL} using non-Gaussian CMB maps generated by the method described in (Liguori, Matarrese and Moscardini 2003). This procedure to obtain non-Gaussian maps differs significantly from the method used in previous works on estimation of f_{NL}. Nevertheless, using spherical wavelets, we find results in very good agreement with (Mukherjee and Wang 2004), showing that the two ways of generating primordial non-Gaussian maps give equivalent results. Moreover, we introduce a new method for estimating the non-linear coupling constant from CMB observations by using the local curvature of the temperature fluctuation field. We present both Bayesian credible regions (assuming a flat prior) and proper (frequentist) confidence intervals on f_{NL}, and discuss the relation between the two approaches. The Bayesian approach tends to yield lower error bars than the frequentist approach, suggesting that a careful analysis of the different interpretations is needed. Using this method, we estimate f_{NL}=-10^{+270}_{-260} at the 2\sigma level (Bayesian) and f_{NL}=-10^{+310}_{-270} (frequentist). Moreover, we find that the wavelet and the local curvature approaches, which provide similar error bars, yield approximately uncorrelated estimates of f_{NL} and therefore, as advocated in (Cabella et al. 2004), the estimates may be combined to reduce the error bars. In this way, we obtain f_{NL}=-5\pm 85 and f_{NL}=-5\pm 175 at the 1\sigma and 2\sigma level respectively using the frequentist approach., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Abstract: Context. About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. Aims. The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. Methods. Cluster pairs are good candidates for searching for the hotter and denser phase of the intergalactic medium (which is more easily observed through the SZ effect). Using an X-ray catalogue of clusters and the Planck data, we selected physical pairs of clusters as candidates. Using the Planck data, we constructed a local map of the tSZ effect centred on each pair of galaxy clusters. ROSAT data were used to construct X-ray maps of these pairs. After modelling and subtracting the tSZ effect and X-ray emission for each cluster in the pair, we studied the residuals on both the SZ and X-ray maps. Results. For the merging cluster pair A399-A401 we observe a significant tSZ effect signal in the intercluster region beyond the virial radii of the clusters. A joint X-ray SZ analysis allows us to constrain the temperature and density of this intercluster medium. We obtain a temperature of kT = 7.1 ± 0.9 keV (consistent with previous estimates) and a baryon density of (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10-4 cm -3. Conclusions. The Planck satellite mission has provided the first SZ detection of the hot and diffuse intercluster gas.

Abstract: We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130 degrees <= l <= 230 degrees and -50 degrees <= b <= -10 degrees). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (nu < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature T-e from Ha and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained T-e ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% (f(d) = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5 +/- 1.5 GHz. We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. By combining physical models for vibrational and rotational dust emission and adding the constraints from the thermal dust spectrum from Planck and IRAS, we are able to present a good description of the AME frequency spectrum for plausible values of the local density and radiation field.

Abstract: We make use of the Planck all-sky survey to derive number counts and spectral indices of extragalactic sources - infrared and radio sources - from the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC) at 100 to 857 GHz (3mm to 350 mu m). Three zones (deep, medium and shallow) of approximately homogeneous coverage are used to permit a clean and controlled correction for incompleteness, which was explicitly not done for the ERCSC, as it was aimed at providing lists of sources to be followed up. Our sample, prior to the 80% completeness cut, contains between 217 sources at 100 GHz and 1058 sources at 857 GHz over about 12 800 to 16 550 deg(2) (31 to 40% of the sky). After the 80% completeness cut, between 122 and 452 and sources remain, with flux densities above 0.3 and 1.9 Jy at 100 and 857 GHz. The sample so defined can be used for statistical analysis. Using the multi-frequency coverage of the Planck High Frequency Instrument, all the sources have been classified as either dust-dominated (infrared galaxies) or synchrotron-dominated (radio galaxies) on the basis of their spectral energy distributions (SED). Our sample is thus complete, flux-limited and color-selected to differentiate between the two populations. We find an approximately equal number of synchrotron and dusty sources between 217 and 353 GHz; at 353 GHz or higher (or 217 GHz and lower) frequencies, the number is dominated by dusty (synchrotron) sources, as expected. For most of the sources, the spectral indices are also derived. We provide for the first time counts of bright sources from 353 to 857 GHz and the contributions from dusty and synchrotron sources at all HFI frequencies in the key spectral range where these spectra are crossing. The observed counts are in the Euclidean regime. 180. Lavinskyite-1M, K(LiCu)Cu6(Si4O11)2(OH)4, the monoclinic MDO equivalent of lavinskyite-2O (formerly lavinskyite), from the Cerchiara manganese mine, Liguria, Italy

Abstract: Lavinskyite-1M, a monoclinic MDO (Maximum Degree of Order) polytype related to the orthorhombic MDO polytype lavinskyite-2O (formerly lavinskyite, now redefined), was identified in samples from the Cerchiara manganese mine (Liguria, Italy). Both polytypes have the same ideal chemical formula, K(LiCu)Cu6(Si4O11)2(OH)4. Lavinskyite-1M was originally approved as “liguriaite”, but was subsequently redefined as lavinskyite-1M (IMA proposal 16-E). Lavinskyite-1M occurs as blue, micaceous aggregates embedded in calcite-filled microfractures and veinlets, where it is associated with calcite, quartz, norrishite and “schefferite” (a Mn-bearing variety of diopside). Lavinskyite-1M is translucent to transparent, bluish to pale blue in colour with a very pale blue to whitish streak and vitreous lustre; it is non-fluorescent. Individual, always indistinct platelets are up to ~0.15?mm in length. The crystals are tabular (100) and elongate along [001]. Lavinskyite-1M is brittle with perfect cleavage parallel to {100}, and uneven fracture. The estimated Mohs hardness is ~5. The calculated density is 3.613?g/cm3 (for empirical formula). Optically, it is biaxial positive, with a?=?1.674(2); ß?=?1.692(3) and ??=?1.730(3); 2V? is very large, ~75° (est.), 2V? (calc.)?=?70°. Pleochroism is moderate: X (pale) blue, Y pale blue and Z pale blue with faint greenish tint; absorption X?=?Z?=?Y. Orientation: X?^?a?~20° (probably in obtuse beta), Y?=?b, Z?~?c; optical elongation is positive and the optical axis plane is parallel to (010). No dispersion was observed. Chemical analysis (quantitative SEM-EDS and LAICPMS) of two samples yielded the empirical formulae (based on 26 O atoms) (K1.08)S1.08(Li0.89Mg0.36Cu0.33Na0.22Mn2+0.04)S1.86Cu6.00Si8.08O22(OH)4 and (K1.08)S1.08(Li0.89Cu0.35Mg0.28Na0.22Mn2+0.04) S1.78Cu6.00Si8.12O22(OH)4. Strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [d in Å (Icalc) hkl]): 10.216 (100) 100, 9.007 (20) 110, 4.934 (19) 210, 3.983 (19) 230, 3.353 (33) 310, 2.8693 (22) 241, 2.6155 (35) 161, 2.3719 (23) 20-2. The crystal structure has been solved, using single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data (Rint?=?4.60%), by direct methods and refined in space group P21/c (no. 14) to R1?=?5.10% and wR2all?=?13.92% [1786 ‘observed’ reflections with Fo?>?4s(Fo), 199 parameters]. Refined unit-cell parameters are: a?=?10.224(2), b?=?19.085(4), c?=?5.252(1)?Å, ß?=?92.23(3)°, V?=?1024.0(4)?Å3 (Z?=?2). The chemical composition and crystal structure are supported by micro-Raman spectra. Lavinskyite-1M has a sheet structure consisting of corrugated brucite-like (CuO2)n layers with amphibole-type (SiO3)n chains joined to both their upper and lower surfaces. Adjacent complex sheets are linked by [5]-coordinated Li atoms and Cu atoms in square coordination (nearly planar) and interlayer K atoms. Lavinskyite-1M is isostructural with a hypothetical monoclinic MDO polytype of plancheite, not yet found in nature, while lavinskyite-2O is isostructural with plancheite. It appears that a complex and delicate interplay between the Li:Cu and Cu:Mg ratios (lower in lavinskyite-1M), along with an additional influence of impurity cations such as Na and different conditions of formation, results in a stabilisation of the 1M polytype. The origin of lavinskyite-1M can be related to a complex, multi-stage hydrothermal evolution of the primary Fe-Mn ore at Cerchiara, which experienced a diffuse alkali metasomatism under strongly oxidising conditions and produced mineral assemblages enriched in Na, K and Li, while providing also appreciable amounts of Ba, Sr, Ca and Cu.

181. Diverging patterns of fertility decline in Uruguay.

Abstract: BACKGROUND The total fertility rate (TFR) in Uruguay fell from 2.5 to 1.9 children per woman between 1996 and 2011. However, no study to date has examined the decline of the TFR by observing changes in fertility patterns by birth order. OBJECTIVE The main aim of this study is to analyze recent changes in fertility level and timing of childbearing by birth order in Uruguay. METHODS We estimate unconditional and conditional age- and birth-order-specific fertility rates for 1996-2011 using data from vital statistics, population census, and national population estimates. Additionally, three period summary measures of birth-orderspecific fertility quantum are calculated: TFR, PATFR and TFRp*. Timing changes by birth order are examined with MAB and TMAB, focusing on MAB1 and its standard deviation and comparing their evolutions in Uruguay with those of selected countries. RESULTS Fertility decline fits a parity-specific stopping model with a moderate increase in the mean ages of first, second, and third births. The distribution of conditional fertility rates for first and second births depicts an asymmetric bimodal shape linked to the increasing heterogeneity of the timing of childbearing. Compared to countries with similar fertility trends, heterogeneity in the age at first birth in Uruguay is remarkably high. CONCLUSIONS Previous studies suggest that heterogeneity in first and second birth timing is related to structural social inequalities, as women from lower social strata have not significantly changed the age at which they bear a first child, whereas women of middle to high social strata have started to postpone it. The new evidence reinforces the idea that postponement transition in Uruguay cannot be studied without considering this consolidation of social status polarization in fertility timing. 182. The circulation of Early Neolithic pottery in the Mediterranean: A synthesis of new archaeometric data from the Impressed Ware culture of Liguria (north-west Italy)

Abstract: The use of ceramic sourcing to study the scale of human interaction has revealed new perspectives on Early Neolithic voyaging in the Ligurian Sea (northern Italy). We have documented, through archaeometric analyses and in particular optical microscopy of 50 thin sections, the discovery of imported vessels at important prehistoric sites of the Impressed Ware culture of western Liguria. The imported fabrics are characterised by inclusions of gneisses, ophiolites or alkaline-potassic volcanic rocks, which are incompatible with local formations. The sources of these imports could be a few geological areas of the Tyrrhenian coast between central Liguria, Corsica and Lazio. The results of this research demonstrate that a very early maritime circulation of pottery began in the central Mediterranean, with the introduction of ceramic pyrotechnology at the beginning of the Neolithic period (c. 6000BCE). The provenanced areas for the imported vessels suggest that the route of human colonisation of the Ligurian-Provençal arch could have been from the south-east, probably favoured by the north-west direction of the surface marine currents. The stylistic similarities (in vessel shapes and decorative motifs) observed in the pottery production and other aspects of the material culture from the Impressed Ware sites of the north and central Tyrrhenian coast are thus explained as the result of an intensive contact network that existed between the populations living along the coast of the Mediterranean, which were trading and exchanging several commodities overseas, presumably including obsidian and greenstones but also, perhaps, perishable substances contained in vessels.

Its performance is well in line with expectations, and it will continue to gather scientific data until the end of its cryogenic lifetime. We give an overview of the history of Planck in its first year of operations, and describe some of the key performance aspects of the satellite. This paper is part of a package submitted in conjunction with Planck’s Early Release Compact Source Catalogue, the first data product based on Planck to be released publicly. ROMA is a fast, accurate, and robust implementation of the iterative generalised least-squares approach to map-making. We benchmark ROMA on realistic simulated data from the last polarisation-sensitive flight of BOOMERanG.

187. Non-iterative methods to estimate the in-flight noise properties of CMB detectors

Abstract: We present a new approach for statistical inference on noise properties of CMB anisotropy data. We consider a Maximum Likelihood parametric estimator to recover the full dependence structure of the noise process. We also consider a semiparametric procedure which is only sensitive to the low frequency behavior of the noise spectral density. Both approaches are statistically robust and computationally convenient in the case of long memory noise, even under nonstationary circumstances. We show that noise properties can be consistently derived by such procedures without resorting to currently used iterative noise-signal methods. More importantly, we show that optimal (GLS) CMB maps can be obtained from the observed timestream with the only knowledge of the noise memory parameter, the outcome of our estimators.

188. Abstract 14916: Computerized Working Memory Training for Hypertensive Individuals With Executive Function Impairment: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract: Introduction:Hypertension is a risk factor for working memory (WM) impairment, and the Cogmed training has been tested as a non-pharmacological alternative to WM rehabilitation. However, the benefits of Cogmed for the hypertensive population are unknown. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate Cogmed’s effects on WM performance of hypertensive individuals with executive function (EF) impairment.Methods:We included 40 hypertensive patients (aged 40 to 70 years, 68% female) with EF impairment. They were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive ten weeks of adaptive Cogmed training or a non-adaptive control training based on online games. The primary outcome was the WM performance. The secondary outcomes were the performance in other neuropsychological tests, as well as the indirect neuronal activity measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) under two WM task conditions: low (memorization of 4 spatial locations) and high (memorization of 6 spatial locations). An intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) analysis were performed. The fMRI images were evaluated with the FSL tools. Cognitive outcomes were analyzed with a mixed model for repeated measures.Results:Compared to the control group, the Cogmed group did not show significant improvement in WM or any other cognitive outcome post-training (ITT and PP analysis). However, under the WM-low load and WM-high load conditions, respectively, the Cogmed group had an activation decrease in the right superior parietal lobe (ITT and PP analysis) and left inferior frontal lobe (PP analysis) in comparison to the control group (p<0.05).Conclusions:The Cogmed showed no effects on WM performance of hypertensive individuals with EF impairment. However, activation decreases were observed in frontoparietal areas related to the WM network, suggesting intervention-related increases in neural efficiency.

193. Mcalpineite from the Gambatesa mine, Italy, and redefinition of the species

Abstract: Mcalpineite has been found in the Gambatesa mine (eastern Liguria, Italy). It occurs in a quartz vein mainly as yellowish green earthy crusts consisting of poorly crystallized mcalpineite intergrown with an unidentified Cu-Te phase, as well as quite pure aggregates of well euhedral emerald green crystals (individually reaching up to 50 µm), associated with black fragments of paratellurite (TeO2) and weissite (Cu2-xTe). The chemical formula of this rare mineral, found at the McAlpine mine (typelocality; California, U.S.A.) and at the Centennial Eureka mine (Utah, U.S.A., co-type locality), was originally given Cu3TeO6·H2O. X-ray powder diffraction and selected-area electron diffraction data of mcalpineite are in good agreement with those of synthetic Cu3TeO6. In addition no evidence for structural OH group was detected by micro-Raman analysis carried out on samples from Gambatesa, Centennial Eureka, and McAlpine (co-type sample) mines. Taking into account structural, topological, and experimental evidence, the crystal structure and chemical composition of mcalpineite must be revised: the mineral crystallizes in the Ia3¯ space group and the correct chemical formula is Cu3TeO6.

194. NON-GAUSSIANITIES IN THE LOCAL CURVATURE OF THE FIVE-YEAR WMAP DATA

Abstract: Using the five-year WMAP data, we re-investigate claims of non-Gaussianities and asymmetries detected in local curvature statistics of the one-year WMAP data. In Hansen et al., it was found that the northern ecliptic hemisphere was non-Gaussian at the [?]1% level testing the densities of hill, lake, and saddle points based on the second derivatives of the cosmic microwave background temperature map. The five-year WMAP data have a much lower noise level and better control of systematics. Using these, we find that the anomalies are still present at a consistent level. Also the direction of maximum non-Gaussianity remains. Due to limited availability of computer resources, Hansen et al. were unable to calculate the full covariance matrix for the kh2-test used. Here, we apply the full covariance matrix instead of the diagonal approximation and find that the non-Gaussianities disappear and there is no preferred non-Gaussian direction. We compare with simulations of weak lensing to see if this may cause the observed non-Gaussianity when using a diagonal covariance matrix. We conclude that weak lensing does not produce non-Gaussianity in the local curvature statistics at the scales investigated in this paper. The cause of the non-Gaussian detection in the case of a diagonal matrix remains unclear.

195. Tuning Glutamine Binding Modes in Gd‐DOTA‐Based Probes for an Improved MRI Visualization of Tumor Cells

Abstract: Three new magnetic resonance imaging probes that target glutamine transporters have been synthesized. They consist of a Gd‐DOTA‐monoamide moiety (DOTA=1,4,7,10‐tetraazacyclododecane‐1,4,7,10‐tetraacetic acid) linked through a six carbon atom chain to a vector represented by a glutamine residue bound through α‐carboxylic, γ‐carboxamidic, or α‐amino functionalities. Their uptake by HTC (rat hepatocarcinoma) and healthy rat hepatocytes has shown that the system containing the glutamine vector bound through the α‐carboxylic group displays a markedly higher affinity for tumor cells. The observed behavior is rationalized in terms of the exploitation of an additional glutamine transporter active in hepatic tumor cells.

196. Solid state solubility between SnO2and (FeSb)O4at high temperature

Abstract: The solubility in the solid state was investigated for the pseudo-binary system SnO2—(FeSb)O4at high temperature. Stoichiometric amounts of pure SnO2and (FeSb)O4powders were mixed and reacted in air at 1373 K. Solid state solubility was ascertained in the whole compositional range at high temperature, whereas at low temperature a miscibility gap occurs. The structural refinement performed according to the Rietveld method reveals that the (Sn2xFe1–xSb1–x)O4solid solution (0 ≤ x≤ 1) crystallizes in the tetragonal system with a rutile-type structure. Negative deviations from Vegard's law were observed. An anisotropic broadening of the X-ray reflections was observed and analysed by means of Williamson-Hall plots.

Abstract: The glutamine transporting system is up-regulated in tumor cells because cell proliferation requires the uptake of large quantities of glutamine. It has been found that the paramagnetic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reporter Gd-DOTAMA-C6-Gln, where the glutamine residue is covalently bound to the Gd chelate through a C6spacer, accumulates in tumor cells both “in vitro” and “in vivo” experiments. The observation that the relaxivity of cellular pellets does not increase with the increase in the amounts of entrapped Gd chelate is taken as an indication that the internalization has occurred through receptor mediated endocytosis. The iv administration of Gd-DOTAMA-C6-Gln allowed the MRI visualization of tumor masses in A/J mice grafted with the murine neuroblastoma cell line Neuro-2a and in Her-2/neu transgenic mice developing multiple mammary carcinoma, respectively.

198. Solid state miscibility in the pseudo-binary TiO2—(FeSb)O4system at 1373 K

Abstract: The tetragonal rutile-type (FeSb)O4compound was synthesized reacting Fe2O3and Sb2O3in O2. Solid solubility in the pseudo-binary TiO2—(FeSb)O4(rutile — tripuhyite) system was investigated annealing powder mixtures characterized by different TiO2/(FeSb)O4molar ratios in an O2flux. Complete miscibility was found in the whole compositional range at 1373 K. The crystal structures of (FeSb)O4and selected terms of the (Ti2xFe1–xSb1–x)O4solid solution (0 ≤ x≤ 1) were refined from X-ray powder diffraction data using the Rietveld method. Selective broadening of the X-ray lines was observed and analyzed by means of the Gaussian quadratic plot. Line broadening is probably related to a phase transformation taking place at low temperature, as suggested by the excess molar volume of the solid solution. As a result local chemical inhomogeneity and microstrain in the direction perpendicular to the 00llattice planes for compositions 0.2 ≤ x≤ 0.6 are generated.

200. Insights into the use of paramagnetic Gd(III) complexes in MR‐molecular imaging investigations

Abstract: Can gadolinium III [Gd(III)] complexes be considered good candidates for magnetic resonance (MR)‐molecular imaging studies? In this review article, we examine the principal issues that are the basis of successful use of Gd‐based protocols in molecular imaging applications. High relaxivity is the primary requisite. Therefore, the design of such paramagnetic probes has to be pursued keeping in mind the relationships between structure, dynamics, and the relevant parameters involved in paramagnetic relaxation processes. Moreover, the limited number of target molecules on cellular membranes makes it necessary to define strategies aimed at delivering many Gd‐containing moieties to the sites of interest. Examples are reported for the attainment of very high relaxivities for the design of new routes for pursuing the accumulation of small sized Gd(III) complexes at the targeting sites. An efficient cellular uptake of Gd‐containing probes is the key step for attaining the visualization of targeted cells by MR imaging, and selected examples are reported. In this context, the problem of the assessment of the minimum amount of Gd(III) complexes necessary for the MR imaging‐visualization of cells has been addressed by reporting the authors' observations on the cell‐internalization of Gd(III) complexes. A particularly efficient delivery system is represented by Gd‐loaded apoferritin, which allows the MR visualization of hepatocytes when the number of Gd‐complexes per cell is 4 ± 1 × 107. Finally, the potential of responsive systems is considered by outlining the exploitation of the amplification effect brought about by the action of a specific enzymatic activity on the relaxivity of a suitably functionalized Gd(III) complex.
