We report that chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown bilayer and thicker-layered MoS2 are structurally and optically stable under ambient conditions, in comparison to CVD-grown monolayer MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) that have been reported to degrade under the same conditions, hindering their many potential applications. We present atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy measurements of as-grown and preheated multilayer MoS2 after exposure to ambient conditions for periods of up to 2 years. The AFM images show that, under ambient conditions, as-grown and preheated bilayer and thicker-layered MoS2 films do not exhibit the growth of dendrites that is characteristic of monolayer degradation. Dendrites are observed to stop at the monolayer-bilayer boundary. Raman and PL spectra of the aged bilayer and thicker-layered films are comparable to those of as-grown films. The greater stability of bilayers and thicker layers supports a previously reported mechanism for monolayer degradation involving F\"orster resonance energy transfer. Our results show that bilayer and thicker-layered TMDs are promising materials for applications requiring ambient stability.

Textbook Question Answering is a complex task in the intersection of Machine Comprehension and Visual Question Answering that requires reasoning with multimodal information from text and diagrams. For the first time, this paper taps on the potential of transformer language models and bottom-up and top-down attention to tackle the language and visual understanding challenges this task entails. Rather than training a language-visual transformer from scratch we rely on pre-trained transformers, fine-tuning and ensembling. We add bottom-up and top-down attention to identify regions of interest corresponding to diagram constituents and their relationships, improving the selection of relevant visual information for each question and answer options. Our system ISAAQ reports unprecedented success in all TQA question types, with accuracies of 81.36%, 71.11% and 55.12% on true/false, text-only and diagram multiple choice questions. When two (possibly different in distribution) continuous-state branching processes with immigration are present, we study the relative frequency of one of them when the total mass is forced to be constant at a dense set of times. This leads to a SDE whose unique strong solution will be the definition of a $\Lambda$-asymmetric frequency process ($\Lambda$-AFP). We prove that it is a Feller process and we calculate a large population limit when the total mass tends to infinity. This allows us to study the fluctuations of the process around its deterministic limit. Furthermore, we find conditions for the $\Lambda$-AFP to have a moment dual. The dual can be interpreted in terms of selection, (coordinated) mutation, pairwise branching (efficiency), coalescence, and a novel component that comes from the asymmetry between the reproduction mechanisms. In the particular case of a pair of equally distributed continuous-state branching processes, the associated $\Lambda$-AFP will be the dual of a $\Lambda$-coalescent. The map that sends each continuous-state branching process to its associated $\Lambda$-coalescent (according to the former procedure) is a homeomorphism between metric spaces.

Renewed interest in Very Low Earth Orbits (VLEO) - i.e. altitudes below 450 km - has led to an increased demand for accurate environment characterisation and aerodynamic force prediction. While the former requires knowledge of the mechanisms that drive density variations in the thermosphere, the latter also depends on the interactions between the gas-particles in the residual atmosphere and the surfaces exposed to the flow. The determination of the aerodynamic coefficients is hindered by the numerous uncertainties that characterise the physical processes occurring at the exposed surfaces. Several models have been produced over the last 60 years with the intent of combining accuracy with relatively simple implementations. In this paper the most popular models have been selected and reviewed using as discriminating factors relevance with regards to orbital aerodynamics applications and theoretical agreement with gas-beam experimental data. More sophisticated models were neglected, since their increased accuracy is generally accompanied by a substantial increase in computation times which is likely to be unsuitable for most space engineering applications. For the sake of clarity, a distinction was introduced between physical and scattering kernel theory based gas-surface interaction models. The physical model category comprises the Hard Cube model, the Soft Cube model and the Washboard model, while the scattering kernel family consists of the Maxwell model, the Nocilla-Hurlbut-Sherman model and the Cercignani-Lampis-Lord model. Limits and assets of each model have been discussed with regards to the context of this paper. In recent years, misinformation on the Web has become increasingly rampant. The research community has responded by proposing systems and challenges, which are beginning to be useful for (various subtasks of) detecting misinformation. However, most proposed systems are based on deep learning techniques which are fine-tuned to specific domains, are difficult to interpret and produce results which are not machine readable. This limits their applicability and adoption as they can only be used by a select expert audience in very specific settings. In this paper we propose an architecture based on a core concept of Credibility Reviews (CRs) that can be used to build networks of distributed bots that collaborate for misinformation detection. The CRs serve as building blocks to compose graphs of (i) web content, (ii) existing credibility signals --fact-checked claims and reputation reviews of websites--, and (iii) automatically computed reviews. We implement this architecture on top of lightweight extensions to Schema.org and services providing generic NLP tasks for semantic similarity and stance detection. Evaluations on existing datasets of social-media posts, fake news and political speeches demonstrates several advantages over existing systems: extensibility, domain-independence, composability, explainability and transparency via provenance. In this paper, we study the optimal capital structure model with endogenous bankruptcy when the firm's asset value follows an exponential L\'evy process with positive jumps. In the Leland-Toft framework \cite{LelandToft96}, we obtain the optimal bankruptcy barrier in the classical continuous-observation model and the periodic-observation model, recently studied by Palmowski et al.\ \cite{palmowski2019leland}. We further consider the two-stage optimization problem of obtaining the optimal capital structure. Detailed numerical experiments are conducted to study the sensitivity of the firm's decision-making with respect to the observation frequency and positive jumps of the asset value.

With our robotic 1.2 m TIGRE telescope, we were able to obtain eight optical spectra with intermediate resolution (R = 20,000) of the Nova V659 Sct during different phases of its outburst. We present a list of the lines found in the Nova spectra. The most common features are H I, O I, Na I, Fe II and Ca II. Studying the spectral evolution of the strong features we found that the absorption features move to higher expansion velocities before disappearing and the emission features show (different) asymmetries. Thanks to the intermediate spectral resolution we identified and analysed the interstellar medium absorption features present in the spectra. We detected atomic absorption features of Na I and Ca II. The sodium D lines show more complex substructures with three main absorption features at around a velocity of -10, 30 and 85 km/s. We consider the L\'evy model of the perpetual American call and put options with a negative discount rate under Poisson observations. Similar to the continuous observation case as in De Donno et al. [24], the stopping region that characterizes the optimal stopping time is either a half-line or an interval. The objective of this paper is to obtain explicit expressions of the stopping and continuation regions and the value function, focusing on spectrally positive and negative cases. To this end, we compute the identities related to the first Poisson arrival time to an interval via the scale function and then apply those identities to the computation of the optimal strategies. We also discuss the convergence of the optimal solutions to those in the continuous observation case as the rate of observation increases to infinity. Numerical experiments are also provided.

Multilingualism is a cultural cornerstone of Europe and firmly anchored in the European treaties including full language equality. However, language barriers impacting business, cross-lingual and cross-cultural communication are still omnipresent. Language Technologies (LTs) are a powerful means to break down these barriers. While the last decade has seen various initiatives that created a multitude of approaches and technologies tailored to Europe's specific needs, there is still an immense level of fragmentation. At the same time, AI has become an increasingly important concept in the European Information and Communication Technology area. For a few years now, AI, including many opportunities, synergies but also misconceptions, has been overshadowing every other topic. We present an overview of the European LT landscape, describing funding programmes, activities, actions and challenges in the different countries with regard to LT, including the current state of play in industry and the LT market. With 24 official EU and many additional languages, multilingualism in Europe and an inclusive Digital Single Market can only be enabled through Language Technologies (LTs). European LT business is dominated by hundreds of SMEs and a few large players. Many are world-class, with technologies that outperform the global players. However, European LT business is also fragmented, by nation states, languages, verticals and sectors, significantly holding back its impact. The European Language Grid (ELG) project addresses this fragmentation by establishing the ELG as the primary platform for LT in Europe. The ELG is a scalable cloud platform, providing, in an easy-to-integrate way, access to hundreds of commercial and non-commercial LTs for all European languages, including running tools and services as well as data sets and resources. Once fully operational, it will enable the commercial and non-commercial European LT community to deposit and upload their technologies and data sets into the ELG, to deploy them through the grid, and to connect with other resources. The ELG will boost the Multilingual Digital Single Market towards a thriving European LT community, creating new jobs and opportunities. Furthermore, the ELG project organises two open calls for up to 20 pilot projects. The current scientific and technological landscape is characterised by the increasing availability of data resources and processing tools and services. In this setting, metadata have emerged as a key factor facilitating management, sharing and usage of such digital assets. In this paper we present ELG-SHARE, a rich metadata schema catering for the description of Language Resources and Technologies (processing and generation services and tools, models, corpora, term lists, etc.), as well as related entities (e.g., organizations, projects, supporting documents, etc.). The schema powers the European Language Grid platform that aims to be the primary hub and marketplace for industry-relevant Language Technology in Europe. Comet Interceptor is an ESA F-class mission expected to launch in 2028 on the same launcher as ESA's ARIEL mission. Comet Interceptor's science payload consists of three spacecraft, a primary spacecraft that will carry two smaller probes to be released at the target. The three spacecraft will fly-by the target along different chords, providing multiple simultaneous perspectives of the comet nucleus and its environment. Each of the spacecraft will be equipped with different but complementary instrument suites designed to study the far and near coma environment and surface of a comet or interstellar object (ISO). The primary spacecraft will perform a fly-by at ~1000 km from the target. The two smaller probes will travel deeper into the coma, closer to the nucleus. The mission is being designed and launched without a specific comet designated as its main target. Comet Interceptor will travel to the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrangian point with ARIEL and wait in hibernation until a suitable long-period comet (LPC) is found that will come close enough to the Sun for the spacecraft to maneuver to an encounter trajectory. To prepare for all eventualities, the science team has assembled a preliminary set of backup targets from the known Jupiter family comets, where a suitable fly-by trajectory can be achieved during the nominal mission timeline (including the possibility of some launch delay). To better prioritize this list, we are releasing our potential backup targets in order to solicit the planetary community's help with observations of these objects over future apparitions and to encourage publication of archival data on these objects., Comment: Accepted to RNAAS
