A Big Data Architecture for Managing Oceans of Data and Maritime Applications

GDPR's Right to Data Portability requires data to be provided in an interoperable, commonly used, and machine-readable format and facilitates its transfer between controllers. However, a major challenge for such data to be used between different services is agreement over common schemas to define the semantics of data. We present our vision of a holistic process for organisations to export and import data in an interoperable manner by using ontology matching and mapping techniques to identify a common model towards schema-negotiation. Our approach enables organisations to exchange data using a common base schema, thereby motivating greater innovation in the ecosystem through data reuse. To demonstrate our vision, we present a proof-of-concept application of ingesting data from Facebook into Twitter.

Researchers studying these health-environment interactions integrate and link multiple and diverse data sources as part of their research workflows. Emerging technologies such as Knowledge Graphs (KG) can make the data integration process efficient for researchers by making the datasets interoperable. However, KG technologies are not easy to incorporate into researchers? workflows due to the technical knowledge and practical expertise required to access, explore and establish relevant links between the datasets. The major contribution of this PhD thesis is the proposed framework SERDIF (Semantic Environmental and Rare Disease data Integration Framework) that allows health data researchers themselves to directly link health data with relevant environmental data in support of their research workflows. SERDIF advances the state of the art in being the first usable KG framework, that is W3C standards-based, to be developed and implemented for the study of environmental triggers associated with rare diseases. This PhD thesis yielded two minor contributions towards improving the adoption of KG technologies and promoting transparency of research methods and data reuse towards improving the efficiency of scientific research. The first minor contribution is a step by step description of the methods and results of the evaluation approach, providing KG practitioners with a reproducible example in how to make their technologies usable for domain experts. The second minor contribution is a a collection of open source artefacts as a by-product during the development of SERDIF published to promote open science. While SERDIF has been implemented for rare disease studies, the framework has the potential to be used in other contexts to address the data integration challenges of environmental studies. When querying knowledge over the Web we typically consider the Web of Data to be a static point of reference that is always available and that never changes. However, when actually running queries "in the wild", we encounter a broad range of problems; spanning from the (un)availability of entire knowledge graphs (and their SPARQL endpoints) to outdated references between knowledge graphs and beyond that, we are almost entirely missing out on the availability of previous versions of knowledge graphs and provenance metadata about them. This position paper discusses these issues in context and sketches some of the solu- tions to mitigate them. In particular, this paper first discusses approaches to keep knowledge graphs available for continuous and scalable querying and afterwards presents an approach that enables community-driven updates so that mistakes can be corrected or missing information can be added. Then, the paper highlights what we can learn from RDF archiving solutions to better support evolving knowledge graphs. And finally, the paper puts these aspects into perspective and provides an outlook to open challenges and future work.

Il tema sviluppato nella tesi riguarda il recupero edilizio dell’edilizia residenziale pubblica in chiave energetico-ambientale attraverso l’integrazione delle esigenze tecnologiche, costruttive, tecnico-impiantistiche, funzionali ed economiche degli interventi. Tale studio si posiziona nell’ambito di ricerca dell’innovazione tecnologica e del recupero edilizio in chiave energetico-ambientale sviluppando il tema del rapporto tra esigenze tecnico-impiantistiche, energetiche, funzionali ed economiche, applicate all’edilizia residenziale pubblica. Nello specifico si è inteso determinare un sistema, articolato per settori di indagine e specifiche proposizioni, su principi, strumenti e modalità d’azione per la determinazione di linee guida per gli interventi di riqualificazione dell’esistente; si sono definite modalità d’intervento funzionali al miglioramento delle prestazioni ambientali, energetiche, e fruitive, focalizzando l’attenzione su tutte quelle tecniche, metodi e strumenti che consentono di arrivare al controllo e alla gestione del progetto dell’esistente; si è contribuito alla determinazione di strumenti d’intervento e all’identificazione di una struttura metodologica per quanto concerne la progettazione e il controllo degli interventi di retrofitting tecnologico, energetico ed ambientale nel campo dell’edilizia residenziale pubblica. Tale assunto è stato definito attraverso una ricognizione sullo stato dell’arte relativo a ricerche nazionali ed internazionali che riguardano il recupero e l’adeguamento tecnologico ed impiantistico ai fini energetici ed ambientali, e in secondo luogo da una analisi su progetti recenti di recupero; tale operazione è stata finalizzata a verificare come e se dai principi teorici e dalle applicazioni pratiche è possibile estrapolare criteri e parametri qualitativi e quantitativi per la valutazione degli interventi e per la generale definizione di un apparato di supporto metodologico-applicativo al recupero eco-sostenibile dell’esistente. Il risultato della ricerca consta nella messa a punto di un modello tecnico-operativo generale per il recupero eco-compatibile dell’edilizia residenziale pubblica che attraverso una lettura sistemica complessa costituita da una successione di livelli di indagine e approfondimenti scalari, si prefiguri come apparato di supporto meteodologico-applicativo per la progettazione e il controllo degli interventi di recupero eco-sostenibile dell’esistente.

La tesi di dottorato affronta il tema della relazione tra assetto morfologico urbano, tecnologie, ed ecoefficienza, ponendo il problema energetico come centrale all’interno della più generale questione della sostenibilità degli insediamenti umani. A supporto di questa interpretazione, dopo aver fornito un quadro generale della ricerca internazionale sull’argomento, vengono analizzati i più recenti progetti di insediamenti eco-sostenibili per verificare “se e quanto” le scelte di configurazione morfologica generale siano guidate da espliciti parametri di eco-compatibilità. Dal quadro generale vengono infine estrapolati e verificati dei parametri di interpretazione morfologica e degli indicatori di efficienza energetico-ambientale utilizzabili come guida e controllo del processo progettuale.
