Recent evidence suggests that voluntary rhythmic movements such as chewing may increase blood serotonin and subsequently brain serotonin, which in turn acts to alleviate premenstrual symptoms. In this observational cross-sectional study, we tested the hypothesis that hardness (difficulty of chewing) of the habitual diet (i.e. dietary hardness) is associated with decreased premenstrual symptoms. Subjects were 640 female Japanese dietetic students aged 18-22 years. Dietary hardness was assessed as an estimate of masticatory muscle activity for the habitual diet (i.e. the difficulty of chewing the food). The consumption of a total of 107 foods was estimated by means of a self-administered, comprehensive diet history questionnaire, and masticatory muscle activity during the ingestion of these foods was estimated according to published equations. Menstrual cycle symptoms were assessed using the retrospective version of the Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, from which total score and subscale scores (i.e. pain, concentration, behavioral change, autonomic reactions, water retention, and negative affect) in the premenstrual phase were calculated and expressed as percentages relative to those in the intermenstrual phase. Dietary hardness was not associated with total score in the premenstrual phase (P for trend = 0.48). Further, no association was seen for any subscale score in the premenstrual phase (P for trend = 0.18-0.91). In conclusion, this preliminary study failed to substantiate a hypothesized inverse relationship between hardness of the habitual diet and premenstrual symptoms. Considering the plausibility of the putative mechanism, however, further investigation using more relevant measures of chewing and premenstrual symptoms is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SummaryA LPS-resistant mutant, W3SF-1, was isolated from a murine macrophage-like cell line, WEHI-3. The W3SF-1 mutant did not produce a significant amount of nitric oxide (NO) or TNF-α even with high concentrations of LPS in the presence or absence of FCS, whereas the parental WEHI-3 cells produced them in response to LPS. The parental cells expressed a significant level of TNF-α mRNA after LPS stimulation, whereas the mutant cells did not. This defective response of the mutant cells to LPS was neither dependent on the concentration or chemical structure of LPS, nor on the time of LPS treatment. The mutant cells also showed a defective response to zymosan, suggesting that the defect in the mutant cells is common to LPS and zymosan in the signal transduction pathways. The parental and mutant cells showed similar levels of Mac1, F4/80 and CD14, suggesting that these surface markers of macrophages are not linked directly to the defective responses of the mutant to LPS. The treatment of mutant cells with IFN-γ did not restore the defect of NO or TNF-α production on LPS treatment. Binding experiments with 125I-labelled LPS showed a similar binding affinity for LPS in the parental and the mutant cells. These results suggest that the defect in the W3SF-1 mutant cells may not reside in the LPS binding but rather in the early step of signal transduction pathways in the cells after LPS binding. Photosynthesis, respiration, carbonic anhydrase activity and chlorophyll concentrations were correlated with zinc nutrition in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). The critical zinc level during early plant growth was 13 μg/g dry weight in recently matured leaves (blade three). Photosynthesis and chlorophyll concentration required a minimum Zn of 13 and 14 μ/g dry weight, respectively, in blade three for maximum activity and synthesis. Respiration was not influenced by zinc status. Carbonic anhydrase activity increased curvilinearly as zinc status improved from deficiency to adequacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 2B/X2.8 double-ribbon flare of 30 March, 1982 is investigated using Hα, white light, X-rays, and microwaves. The X-ray burst seems to consist of two components, i.e., an impulsive component showing a long chain of peaks and a thermal component ( T ∼ 2 × 10 K). In the early phase, the source images for the impulsive component were available simultaneously at soft (7-14 keV) and hard (20-40 keV) X-rays. Both sources are elongated along a neutral line. The core of the source for the hard X-rays is located at one end which seems to be a footpoint (or a leg) of a loop or arcade, while the core for the soft X-rays is located at the center of the elongated source which would be the center of the loop. The core for the hard X-rays shifted to this center in the main and later phase, accompanied by decrease in the source size in the later phase. A peak of one-directional intensity distribution at 35 GHz always lies on the core of the hard X-ray source, showing a shift of the position synchronous with the hard X-ray core. This may imply a common source for the radio waves and the hard X-rays. The source of the thermal component observed at the soft X-rays (7-14 keV) after the early phase covers a whole Hα patches. Intracellular location of cytochrome oxidase (cytoxidase) active in vivo was studied cytochemically with four strains of cyanophytes, using 3,3′-diaminobenzidine (DAB) oxidation. DAB was oxidized in the dark by Synechocystis sp. PCC6714 and two strains of Anacystis nidulans (Tx20 and R2) grown under photoautotrophic, heterotrophic and salt-stressed conditions, respectively. Electron microscopic observations showed that DAB-oxidation in the dark occurred in the thylakoids, but was insignificant on or around the cytoplasmic membrane. However, deposition of DAB-oxidation product around the cytoplasmic membrane was observed with cells of the thylakoid-less cyanophyte Glaeobacter violaceus ATCC29082. All DAB oxidations observed with the four strains were inhibited completely by cyanide, the inhibitor of cyt-oxidase, but not by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, the inhibitor of peroxidase. The results show that (1) DAB was oxidized by the cyt-oxidase functioning in the respiratory system, and that (2) cyt-oxidase in thylakoids was active in vivo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
