We report the first case of an anterior laryngeal web post gunshot wound in the modern literature. A 27 year-old man suffered a close range shotgun injury to his neck. He presented with stridor and a large open neck wound. Emergency tracheostomy was required. A postoperative fibreoptic laryngoscopy revealed anterior glottic web formation. This case report highlights the difficulties in managing acquired anterior laryngeal webs and reviews the only other case in the in the literature from 1915.

Physical activity (PA) is associated with numerous health-related benefits among adults with chronic diseases and the general population. As the benefits are dose-dependent, this review aims to establish the PA levels of adults with spondyloarthritis and to compare these to the general population. Electronic databases (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, MEDLINE/PubMed, PEDro, AMED, CINAHL) were systematically searched from inception to May 2014 using medical subject headings and keywords. This was supplemented by searching conference abstracts and hand-searching reference lists of included studies. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials and observational studies of adults with SpA in which free-living PA or energy expenditure levels were measured. Subjects less than 18 years or with juvenile-onset SpA were excluded. Outcomes included objective and self-report measurements. Two reviewers independently screened studies for inclusion and assessed methodological quality using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the RTI item bank. From the 2,431 records reviewed, nine studies involving 2,972 participants were included. This review focused on qualitative synthesis. Meta-analyses were not undertaken due to differences in study design, measurement tools, and participant characteristics. This heterogeneity, coupled with the risk of bias inherent in the included observational studies, limits the generalizability of findings. Objective measurements suggest PA levels may be lower among adults with spondyloarthritis than in healthy population controls. Self-reported PA and self-reported rates of adherence to PA recommendations varied largely across studies; higher disease activity was associated with lower self-reported PA levels. Physical activity levels may be lower in adults with axial spondyloarthritis, with higher disease activity associated with lower PA levels.

To evaluate the effects of therapeutic exercise on pain, stiffness, quality of life, physical function, disease activity, health-related fitness and cardiovascular risk factors in adults with spondyloarthritis (SpA). Electronic databases (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, MEDLINE/PubMed, PEDro, AMED, CINAHL) were systematically searched from inception to October 2013 using medical subject headings and keywords. This was supplemented by searching conference abstracts and a hand search of reference lists of included studies. Randomised and quasi-randomised studies of adults with SpA in which at least one of the comparison groups received an exercise intervention were included. Outcomes of interest were pain, stiffness, quality of life, physical function and disease activity. Secondary outcomes were health-related fitness and cardiovascular risk factors. Two reviewers independently screened studies for inclusion. Methodological quality was assessed by two reviewers using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the PEDro scale. Twenty-four studies, involving 1,498 participants, were included. Meta-analyses were not undertaken due to clinical heterogeneity, and this review focuses on qualitative synthesis. Moderate evidence supports exercise interventions in improving physical function, disease activity and chest expansion compared to controls; there is low-level evidence of improved pain, stiffness, spinal mobility and cardiorespiratory function. Supervised group exercise yields better outcomes than unsupervised home exercise. The addition of aerobic components to flexibility programmes improves cardiorespiratory outcomes, but not cardiovascular risk factors. The most effective exercise protocol remains unclear. Current evidence suggests that therapeutic exercises are beneficial for adults with ankylosing spondylitis; effects on other SpA subtypes are unknown.

Objectives/hypothesis: To provide an in-depth evaluation of research yield in laryngeal cancer from 1945 to 2010, using large-scale data analysis, employment of bibliometric indicators of production and quality, and density equalizing mapping., Study Design: Bibliometic analysis incorporating the Web of Science Database., Methods: The search strategy employed was as follows; "TS = ((Laryngeal Neoplasm$) OR (Larynx Neoplasm$) OR (Larynx Cancer$) OR (Laryngeal Cancer$))." Author and journal data and cooperation networks were computed following analysis of combinations of countries and institutions that registered cooperation during the study period. Mapping was performed as described by Groneberg-Kloft in 2004., Results: A total of 8,658 items relating to laryngeal cancer were published over the study period, accounting for 139,700 citations. The United States was the most prolific country, accounting for 28.83% (n = 2,496) of total output. Other prolific nations included Italy (n = 794) and Germany (n = 792). There were 973 items published as a consequence of international cooperation; this practice increased steadily over time and accounted for 15.58% (88 of 565) of output in 2010. There were 1,073 different journals publishing articles on laryngeal cancer, although the top 20 (1.8%) most prolific titles were together responsible for more than 43% of the total output; these were led by Laryngoscope (n = 368) and Head and Neck, Journal of the Scientific Specialties (n = 364). A total of 24,682 authors contributed to the literature on laryngeal cancer; the leading author by output was Alfio Ferlito (n = 120); Carlo La Vecchia recorded the highest h-index (h = 32)., Conclusions: This work represents the first attempt to provide quantitative and qualitative analysis of laryngeal cancer research output, whilst in tandem identifying the key bibliometric benchmarks to which those involved in the production of that output might aspire., (Copyright © 2012 The American Laryngological, Rhinological, and Otological Society, Inc.)

Objectives: Considerable controversy exists regarding the merits of elective neck dissection in patients with early stage oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. It is highly desirable to have a method of identifying those patients who would benefit from further treatment of the neck when they are clinically node-negative. The purpose of the present study was to examine the use of sentinel lymph node biopsy in identifying occult neck disease in a cohort of patients with node-negative oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma., Design: We evaluated a total of 13 patients with oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer who were clinically and radiologically node-negative., Results: A sentinel lymph node was found in all 13 patients, revealing metastatic disease in five patients, four of whom had one or more positive sentinel lymph nodes. There was one false negative result, in which the sentinel lymph node was negative for tumour whereas histological examination of the neck dissection specimen showed occult disease., Conclusion: In view of these findings, we would recommend the use of sentinel lymph node biopsy in cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, in order to aid the differentiation of those patients whose necks are harbouring occult disease and who require further treatment.

The aim of this research was to develop a solid regenerable catalytic adsorbent capable of removing aniline from aqueous solutions. A H-Beta zeolite was first loaded with copper in an ion-exchange process to enhance its catalytic activity. Experimental results indicated an aniline adsorption level of approximately 106-114 mg g(-1) for each of the unmodified H-Beta, the 0.5% (w/w) Cu-Beta or the 1.4 % (w/w) Cu-Beta zeolites. The adsorption processes followed the Langmuir model and the level of aniline adsorbed was largely unaffected by a change in temperature. Assessment of the aqueous stability of the exchanged copper on the Beta zeolites indicated minimum copper leaching in the range pH 5-11 thus providing a stable working pH range for both the 0.5% (w/w) and 1.4% (w/w) Cu-Beta adsorbent materials. Catalytic oxidation studies on the adsorbed aniline indicated that the presence of copper in the zeolites significantly enhanced the degradation of aniline to predominantly carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen. Five successive adsorption/catalytic oxidation cycles did not diminish the aniline adsorption capacity of the copper loaded zeolites but there was a small loss in the efficacy of the catalytic oxidation of the adsorbed aniline by the end of the 5th cycle.

Primary cervical tuberculosis is uncommon, although its incidence has risen somewhat over the past few years. In this article, we describe a rare case in which the patient developed a dual pathology-cervical tuberculosis and a malignant squamous cell carcinoma-in a group of lymph nodes on one side of the neck. Initially, tuberculosis was diagnosed on the basis of histology and culture. However when the patient did not respond to antituberculous drug therapy, a repeat biopsy detected the second pathology: squamous cell carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, no such presentation has been previously reported in the world literature. We conclude that repeat biopsy might be required in cases of tuberculous cervical lymphadenopathy that do not respond to conventional antituberculous therapy.

Throughout the years, investigators and surgeons have developed new techniques for tonsillectomy aiming to lessen the postoperative morbidity and complications of tonsillectomy. It is generally accepted that the ideal method should decrease operative time, blood loss, postoperative haemorrhage and morbidity. To compare the technique and post-operative morbidity of two different tonsillectomy methods: cold dissection and bipolar electrodissection. A prospective study including a total of 545 children (Age: 3-16 yrs) undergoing tonsillectomy at The Children's University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, from January 2003 to December 2003. The incidence of primary, secondary haemorrhage and postoperative pain was compared between both techniques. The overall rate of haemorrhage was 3.6% (20 patients) this included primary haemorrhage in 0.3% (2 patients) and secondary haemorrhage in 3.3% (18 patents). Primary haemorrhage occurred only in the electrodissection technique. As regards to secondary haemorrhage it was higher in the electrodissection technique 2.3% (12 patients) compared to 1% (6 patients) of the cold dissection technique. Patients rated pain to be more severe in the electrodissection technique compared to the cold dissection technique. Cold dissection tonsillectomy technique is still considered to be a safe and effective method with less posoperative morbidity complications as evidenced from our study.

This paper describes three cases of patients presenting with lumps in their parotid gland, the origin of which was difficult to define. In each case the past medical history revealed that the patients had undergone previous ipsilateral middle ear surgery. We highlight the fact that where there has been previous incisions in the skin about the ear, there is a risk of epidermal inclusion cysts in the parotid gland. These cysts can occur many years after the initial surgery and therefore may not be identified as an obvious origin to lumps in the parotid gland. Rarely as this series highlights there may also be extension of a cholesteatoma (a collection of keratin which arises from the eardrum and extends into the middle ear space) from the mastoid bone to the parotid gland. We recommend formal ear examination where there is a history of previous ear surgery and an ipsilateral parotid gland lump is present.

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a prevalent nosocomial pathogen worldwide. The objectives of this study were to assess the morbidity and cost associated with the treatment of head and neck cancer patients who become colonized or infected with MRSA following major surgical procedures. We present a retrospective review of patients who underwent major surgery for head and neck cancer over a one year period and who then became MRSA positive in the post-operative period. MRSA affected 25/55 (45 per cent) patients who underwent major head and neck procedures during the period studied. The mean time of diagnosis was 13 days post-surgery. Morbidity included cellulitis, osteomyelitis and MRSA pneumonia. Thirteen of the patients who became MRSA positive (52 per cent of the MRSA group) required further surgery including plate removal, new flap formation and wound debridement as a result of the infection. Average in-hospital stay was almost three times more prolonged for patients who became MRSA positive compared to those who did not have MRSA. The costs of the first hospital stay were over three times more in the MRSA-positive group of patients. Antibiotic costs were increased by pound 2470 per patient because of MRSA. The extra stay in hospital, together with extra days in intensive care, extra medical and nursing care and additional costly antibiotic treatment, led to major cost implications and loss of health service resources in the unit. MRSA infection is a serious cause of morbidity in any surgical group of patients and this study focuses on the consequences for treatment of head and neck cancer patients in particular.

We present a case report of a woman with a recurrent parotid mass that was histologically confirmed to be sclerosing polycystic sialadenopathy, a rarely reported cause of salivary gland tumor. This tumor measured 11.8 x 6 cm, the largest such lesion yet reported. Histologic analysis revealed foci of atypical intraductal acinic cell proliferation and necrosis severe enough to amount to intraductal carcinoma in situ. Despite its large size, it was successfully excised, leaving the patient with only moderate facial nerve dysfunction postoperatively.

A high occult metastatic rate and a high regional recurrence rate are reported among patients with early oral squamous carcinoma; however, considerable controversy exists regarding the merits of elective neck dissection in this group. The purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of various histological factors on the risk of occult neck disease, neck conversion and recurrence among 63 patients with stage I and II oral cancer. Tumour thickness (P = 0.0175) and size (P = 0.023) were both significantly predictive of outcome. Among tumours of a given thickness, those with infiltrative margins also showed a tendency towards a poorer outcome; however, this was not significant (P = 0.0768). Patients undergoing elective neck dissection with pathological evidence of cervical metastases or with subsequent neck recurrence had a better 3-year survival (55%) than those developing neck conversion after primary neck observation (20%). Our data would suggest considering tumours greater than 5 mm in thickness or with infiltrative margins as potential candidates for elective neck treatment.

We present a unique report of ectopic ossification with dystrophic calcification within an otherwise histologically normal parotid gland. The histopathological features of the case are discussed and general pathogenetic explanations for the lesion are explored.

The goals of tympanoplasty in children include improvement in hearing, prevention of ear infections, and elimination of the need for water precautions. However, tympanoplasty in children is a controversial subject. In the present study the outcome of tympanoplasty in children is examined with regard to its success in achieving these goals and to the level of parental satisfaction with its outcome. Fifty-four children undergoing 62 tympanoplasties at our institution were included in the study. The surgical success rate was 72.5 per cent. Fifty per cent of parents reported that their child's hearing had improved (p = 0.181 for association with surgical success), 78 per cent reported a decrease in ear infections (p = 0.023), 45 per cent reported their child to be participating in activities previously refrained from (p = 0.003), and 79 per cent of parents were satisfied with the overall surgical outcome (p<0.001). Our findings show that successful tympanoplasty my confer benefits on children and may help guide parents' expectations of the surgery.

The land disposal of waste from the poultry industry and subsequent environmental implications has stimulated interest into cleaner and more useful disposal options. The review presented here details advances in the three main alternative disposal routes for poultry litter, specifically in the last decade. Results of experimental investigations into the optimisation of composting, anaerobic digestion and direct combustion are summarised. These technologies open up increased opportunities to market the energy and nutrients in poultry litter to agricultural and non-agricultural uses. Common problems experienced by the current technologies are the existence and fate of nitrogen as ammonia, pH and temperature levels, moisture content and the economics of alternative disposal methods. Further advancement of these technologies is currently receiving increased interest, both academically and commercially. However, significant financial incentives are required to attract the agricultural industry.

A rare case of an intratemporal pleomorphic adenoma is presented and the management of such a tumour is discussed. Some anatomical aspects of the facial nerve, pertinent to the pathophysiology of facial paralysis are outlined. This case demonstrates that tumour extension into the temporal bone can be resected successfully at initial surgery with excellent facial nerve functional outcome. We advocate exploration of the fallopian canal to be carried out at primary surgery and be performed by a surgeon familiar with the surgical anatomy of the intratemporal segment of the facial nerve. This approach will reduce the risk of facial nerve injury and palsy both at surgery and subsequently.

The decision to prescribe antibiotics post-tonsillectomy still remains controversial. However, recent changing trends in the tonsillar tissue microflora have been widely reported, with Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus and anaerobic organisms all being implicated. All of the above are beta-lactamase producers and thus render lactamase prone antibiotics inactive. We compared two groups of children, one on Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid (a lactamase stable antibiotic with anaerobic cover) for 1 week post tonsillectomy--Group A (N = 44), and another group on no treatment--Group B (N = 34). We compared tonsillar core, surface and postoperative tonsillar fossae bacteriological profiles in the two groups. The tonsil core pathogens included H. influenzae (64%) of which 9.5% were beta-lactamase producers, Streptococcus viridans (55.9%), S. aureus (37%) of which 86% were beta-lactamase producers, and anaerobes which were found in 25% of samples. We found that there was considerably less morbidity in those children receiving postoperative antibiotics compared to those who did not, as judged by the amount of analgesia consumed (p = 0.379), time to resumption of normal diet (p = 0.0072) and pain analogue scores (p = 0.0006). We feel that treating children who have undergone tonsillectomy with amoxycillin and clavulanic acid significantly reduces postoperative morbidity.

We present a case of massive thoraco-cervical fibromatosis treated by sternotomy and simple excision. The patient remains disease-free after careful follow-up of three years. We suggest that if the lesion is encapsulated and position or size prevents en bloc removal, simple excision may be curative.

Recently, attention has focused on the potential of oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes, and assessment of cell proliferation as biological response indicators in human cancer. In this study, immunocytochemical analysis was used to evaluate the usefulness of Ki67, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr), and the protein products of c-Myc and Bcl-2 as indicators of radiosensitivity in primary cultures of head and neck tumours. Primary cultures established from tumours taken at surgery were divided into two groups; the control group remained untreated, and the treatment group received a single dose of 2 Gy. The cultures were incubated for 14 days, after which time they were fixed and examined immunocytochemically. The response to treatment of the cultures was measured as the percentage of growth inhibition (%GI) in the treated cultures relative to the untreated controls. Expression of Ki67 measured after a single dose of 2 Gy significantly differentiated the radioresistant and radiosensitive groups (P = 0.045); high percentages of Ki67+ cells correlated with radioresistance. A significant difference was found between the expression of EGFr in the resistant and sensitive groups, as measured in control cultures and after a dose of 2 Gy (P = 0.002 and P = 0.03, respectively); high levels of expression of EGFr correlated with radioresistance. The level of expression c-Myc+ cells, as measured in control cultures, significantly distinguished the radiosensitive group from the radioresistant group (P = 0.05). These results indicate a potential role for these proteins as indicators of radioresistance.

The aim was to study the numbers and causes of Maternal Mortality in the Irish Republic in the years 1989-1991, inclusive and publish sufficient detail to allow for international comparative studies. Maternal Deaths were identified via Death Certificates, Coroners' Reports and Hospital Annual Reports. Details of these deaths were then obtained from relevant clinicians and analysed by the authors with further consultation with involved parties, if necessary. There were nineteen deaths notified in the three year period. According to ICD9 these were classified as five direct, seven indirect, and seven fortuitous deaths. Amongst the five Direct deaths, two were associated with amniotic fluid embolism, and one with each of eclampsia, septicaemia and pulmonary embolism, a direct maternal mortality rate of 3.2 per 100,000 births.

This study assesses the role of orthopantomography, computerized tomography and intra-operative assessment in predicting the presence and extent of mandibular invasion by mouth tumours. Forty patient's with squamous carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx were studied. All had pre-operative orthopantomography and computerized tomography as well as intra-operative assessment of mandibular invasion and these factors were compared with the actual histological invasion to assess the role of each test. This study found that negative radiology is useful for excluding cortical invasion and as might be expected is of no real value in excluding periosteal invasion, a positive orthopantomogram accurately predicts invasion at least into the cortex, however, a positive CT must be judged cautiously due to false positives and intra-operative assessment by an experienced operator is a useful adjunct to radiology.

While globus pharyngeus is a common disorder, accounting for 3% to 4% of new otolaryngology outpatient referrals, few long-term follow-up studies have been conducted on patients with this condition. The authors of this study followed 74 patients with a diagnosis of globus pharyngeus for an average of 7 years, 7 months (range: 7 years to 8 years, 10 months). During the follow-up period, 55% of patients were asymptomatic and 45% of patients had persistent symptoms. An in-depth analysis of features at clinical presentation failed to reveal any reliable prognostic indicators. A number of patients developed other conditions during the follow-up period, but no patient developed upper aerodigestive tract malignancy. This study represents the longest follow-up of globus patients to date and, to the authors' knowledge, is the first to address the issue of malignancy in globus.

We report on a family exhibiting a range of congenital anomalies consistent with the G syndrome of Opitz. Three members of the family had laryngo-tracheo-oesophageal clefts, one of which succumbed. There was a strong family history of perinatal mortality on the maternal side of the family. We note also the paucity of reported cases of this syndrome in the otolaryngological literature and stress the necessity of early diagnosis in the management.

Multiple primary squamous cell carcinomas in the upper aerodigestive tract are well described but rare. To be recognised as distinct primary tumours, such malignancies must fulfil a number of anatomical and histological criteria as defined by Warren and Gates. Classification is based on the temporal sequence of tumour diagnosis into three groups; simultaneous, synchronous and metachronous. Second and subsequent primary tumours may escape early detection if not actively searched for. We present a very unusual case of three synchronous tumours in the oral cavity and oropharynx. The literature is reviewed emphasising the importance of thorough investigation of the entire upper aerodigestive tract in patients with a squamous cell carcinoma in this region. Recommendations regarding follow up are also discussed.

Chondrosarcoma of the larynx is a rare malignant cartilaginous neoplasm. To date, the serial sectioned laryngeal specimens of this disease have not been correlated with the pre-operative computed tomographic findings. A retrospective analysis of 833 serially sectioned laryngeal specimens found chondrosarcoma in six cases (0.72%), of which four cases had a pre-surgical computed tomography (CT). Radiologic axial sections were compared with microscopic sections in the same plane. Whole organ sections showed the tumor to have an expansile growth pattern, showing little impulse to infiltrate adjacent cartilage. CT scanning successfully predicted the diagnosis of a cartilage neoplasm prior to surgery, and accurately reflected the site and extent of laryngeal involvement. We conclude that CT is a reliable method of evaluating chondrosarcoma of the larynx, thereby predicting the feasibility of partial laryngeal resection.

A prospective trial of 80 patients with globus pharyngeus is reported. An in-depth analysis of the typical history at presentation is given. The average follow-up period was 27 months (range, 21 to 42 months). The asymptomatic rate at this interval was 25%, with a further 35% reporting a significant improvement in symptoms. Three independent factors were found to influence prognosis (p less than .05). These were sex, length of history at consultation, and the presence or absence of associated throat symptoms. Male patients having a history of the globus symptom for less than 3 months and not complaining of any associated throat symptoms had the best chance of becoming asymptomatic or symptomatically improved. The presence or absence of heartburn or its treatment had no bearing on outcome.

Ireland has one of the highest death rates in the world from coronary heart disease (CHD) and has not shared in the rapid decline in mortality which has occurred in other countries. The Kilkenny Health Project was established as a community-based research and demonstration programme for cardiovascular disease prevention in County Kilkenny and as a pilot project for future national initiatives. The first phase of the health promotion programme in Kilkenny is being carried out between 1985 and 1990. Changes in behaviour and in factors associated with CHD will be estimated by the difference in changes over time between Kilkenny and the reference area, as measured by independent random sample surveys of men and women aged 35 to 64 years. CHD and stroke events, fatal and non-fatal, will be registered in both areas from 1987-1992. The Project has studied attitudes to CHD and its prevention. Health behaviours have been studied in adults and in post-primary school pupils. Risk factors for CHD have been measured in adults in accordance with the methods of the international MONICA Project. It has been demonstrated that health and education professionals can incorporate preventive activities and health education into everyday practice.

Facial nerve paralysis, in association with a parotid mass, is generally considered pathognomonic of malignancy. However, nine cases of paralysis with benign tumors have been reported: four in association with a pleomorphic adenoma, three with a Warthin's tumor and one with an oncocytoma. The details of these cases are described and an additional case of Warthin's tumor causing a facial paralysis is reported. In all four cases of Warthin's tumor the pathology is similar, with inflammation, fibrosis and necrosis, especially in areas surrounding branches of the facial nerve. In view of the 10 cases reviewed herein, it is suggested that the pathology be confirmed at the time of surgery and every effort made to preserve facial nerve function.

Since the beginning of this decade major advances have taken place in the alimentation of patients with tumors of the head and neck. Gauderer and Ponsky described a percutaneous method of gastrostomy and, in 1983, a number of radiologists, including the senior author, described a percutaneous radiologic method using the Seldinger technique to create a feeding gastrostomy. This method is ideally suited for patients with advanced tumors of the head and neck because it requires neither endoscopy nor general anesthesia. Over the past 5 years, 55 patients with tumors of the head and neck have undergone this procedure. Eighty-one percent of the patients had advanced disease at initial presentation. One patient (1.8%) had a procedure-related death and another patient (1.8%) had a complication that required a laparotomy. Three patients (5.4%) had minor complications that required minimal medical attention. None of the patients required general anesthesia and an endoscopy was not required. Patient discomfort during the procedure was minimal.

Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is a severe penetrating infection which has spread outside the confines of the external auditory canal to involve temporal bone, mastoid air cells and periaural soft tissues. It is a rare but important condition, having a mortality rate of between 23%-75%. Clinical diagnosis in the early stage is difficult because the symptoms are similar to acute otitis externa. Diabetes Mellitus is an important predisposing factor present in up to 94% of patients. Two cases of MOE are presented underlining the clinical findings, spectrum of activity and treatment of the disease, and stressing the importance of early diagnosis.

A case of squamous cell carcinoma of the fronto-ethmoid complex in an 18-year-old man is presented. At the time of resection both the anterior and posterior tables of the frontal sinus had to be removed. The resulting surgical defect left a marked cosmetic deformity. CT scan five months after the resection suggested calcification with possible ossification of the dura. Exploration of the area confirmed these findings. Because of the firmness of the dura it was possible to contour a methyl methacrylate template to fill the defect. This was wired to the surrounding bone and provided an excellent cosmetic result. The principle of dural osteogenesis is described, and cranioplasty methods are reviewed.
