Abstract: Emission measurement programmes were carried out at industrial plants in several regions of Germany to determine the fine dust in the waste gases; the PM10, PM2.5 and PM1.0 fractions were sampled using a cascade impactor technique. The installations tested included plants used for: combustion (brown coal, heavy fuel oil, wood), cement production, glass production, asphalt mixing, and processing plants for natural stones and sand, ceramics, metallurgy, chemical production, spray painting, wood processing/chip drying, poultry farming and waste treatment. In addition waste gas samples were taken from small-scale combustion units, like domestic stoves, firing lignite briquettes or wood. In total 303 individual measurement results were obtained during 106 different measurement campaigns. In the study it was found that in more than 70% of the individual emission measurement results from industrial plants and domestic stoves the PM10 portion amounted to more than 90% and the PM2.5 portion between 50% and 90% of the total PM (particulate matter) emission. For thermal industrial processes the PM1.0 portion constituted between 20% and 60% of the total PM emission. Typical particle size distributions for different processes were presented as cumulative frequency distributions and as frequency distributions. The particle size distributions determined for the different plant types show interesting similarities and differences depending on whether the processes are thermal, mechanical, chemical or mixed. Consequently, for the groups of plant investigated, a major finding of this study has been that the particle size distribution is a characteristic of the industrial process. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a disease process characterized by impaired left ventricular function, increased peripheral and pulmonary vascular resistance and reduced exercise tolerance and dyspnea. Thus, mediators involved in the control of myocardial function and vascular tone may be involved in its pathophysiology. The family of endothelins (ET) consists of four closely related peptides, ET-1, ET-2, ET-3, and ET-4, which cause vasoconstriction, cell proliferation, and myocardial effects through activation of ET(A) receptors. In contrast, endothelial ET(B) receptors mediate vasodilation via release of nitric oxide and prostacyclin. In addition, ET(B) receptors in the lung are a major pathway for the clearance of ET-1 from plasma. Thus, infusion of an ET(A) receptor antagonist into the brachial artery in healthy humans leads to vasodilation whereas infusion of an ET(B) receptor antagonist causes vasoconstriction. ET-1 plasma levels are elevated in CHF and correlate both with the hemodynamic severity and with symptoms. Plasma levels of ET-1 and its precursor, big ET-1, are strong independent predictors of death in patients after myocardial infarction and with CHF. ET-1 contributes to increased systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance, vascular dysfunction, myocardial ischemia, and renal impairment in CHF. Selective ET(A) as well as combined ET(A/B) receptor antagonists have been studied in patients with CHF showing impressive hemodynamic improvements (i.e. reduced peripheral vascular and pulmonary resistance as well as increased cardiac output). These results indicate that ET receptor antagonists indeed have a potential to improve hemodynamics, symptoms, and potentially prognosis of CHF which still carries a high mortality. Having left their home country, 18 million refugees and other protection seekers cannot exert their rights to democratic participation. As a consequence, they are deprived of all influence on a legal instrument of existential importance for them, namely the grant of asylum. Can the exclusion of refugees from the framing of aliens legislation be justified? The analysis carried out in this text proceeds in three steps: First, an empirical exploration of international law reveals a tendency towards the emergence of universal implementation of the ideal of democracy. However, this tendency is clearly limited by the concept of citizenship as the crucial link between actor and political structure. The following inquiry into the conceptual roots of democracy and sovereignty identifies the theoretical foundation for the tendency towards universal implementation. Simultaneously, it emerges that insistence on a particularistic sovereignty concept solely professing national interest is logically incompatible with the rationale behind democratic statehood: to realise individual autonomy. Shifting perspective in the last approach, the possibility of a nexus between exclusionary norm creation and disrespect for refugee and immigration law is established by means of contemporary legitimacy theory. This article reports the development and underlying factor structure of a brief measure of consumer satisfaction. Four factors, accounting for 69.1% of the variance, were extracted. They appeared to measure satisfaction with the quality and outcome of treatment, satisfaction with the intake process, satisfaction with the timing of the termination of treatment, and satisfaction with the costs. Analysis of the content of responses to open-ended questions revealed that most consumer concerns had been addressed in the multiple-choice section of the questionnaire. Differences in client groups in level of satisfaction were found on one factor but not the others, supporting the conclusion that satisfaction should be considered multidimensional.
