160. Stable and reliable predictive accuracy of robust weighted slope one under profile injection attacks

Abstract

The Slope One class of algorithms have been shown to lead, although being relatively simple, to accuracies that are very close to the more commonly utilised memory-based Collaborative Filtering (CF) algorithms. In addition, this class of algorithms is highly scalable in comparison to memory-based algorithms. A recently observed phenomenon are profile injection attacks on recommendation algorithms that tend to increase (push attack) or decrease (nuke attack) the recommendations of an item depending on the intentions of the attacker. Model-based algorithms have performed well under such attacks and are therefore preferred over memory-based CF algorithms despite their lower accuracy. Previous work showed that the recommendation ranking of items using the Robust Weighted Slope One (RWSO) algorithm is fairly stable under profile injection attacks compared to the Weighted Slope One (WSO) and the Improved Slope One (I-SO) approaches. In this paper, it is shown that, under profile injection attacks, the predictive accuracy of RWSO is more stable and hence more reliable than the predictive accuracy of WSO and I-SO.

161. Palynology of Three Bog Cores Shows Complex European Impact on the Forests of Central Maine

Abstract

Short peat cores from three sphagnum bogs in central Maine were analyzed palynologically to determine whether recent reforestation approximates forest composition immediately prior to European colonization and deforestation. Radiocarbon dating and palynology show that the cores extend to 600–2000 years b.p., beginning well before 18th-century colonial forest disturbance. Cores from Round Pond bog (Franklin County) and Kanokolus Bog (Waldo County) show that Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock) was much more abundant on the local landscape at the time of European settlement than it is today; a core from Hamilton Pond bog (Kennebec County) records an abrupt local Eastern Hemlock decline, and accompanying Acer spp. (maple) rise, that preceded European contact by several centuries. Byline: Bernard Jacob, Eugene J. O|Brien, W. Newton This is the second part of a two-part paper which addresses the issue of accuracy in weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems. The first part develops the statistical background necessary for any system of accuracy classification applied to a WIM system. This second part describes a draft European specification for the weigh-in-motion (WIM) of road vehicles, prepared by the COST 323 management committee. The philosophy behind the specification is outlined and the basic structure detailed. The specification gives an indication of what WIM accuracy might be achievable from sites with particular characteristics. There is a comprehensive review of methods of calibrating and testing WIM systems. Four types of calibration/test condition are described for tests using statically pre- or post-weighed vehicles. Accuracy classes are defined on the basis of the width of the confidence interval within which the measured results lie. Confidence interval widths arc specified for gross weights and weights of individual axles among other things. The percentage of test results which are required to fall within the confidence intervals is a function of the test conditions and the number of test runs. Examples using real WIM data illustrate the use of the specification.

Abstract

An improved measurement of the average b hadron lifetime is performed using a sample of 1.5 million hadronic Z decays, collected during the 1991-1993 runs of ALEPH, with the silicon vertex detector fully operational, This uses the three-dimensional impact parameter distribution of lepton tracks coming from semileptonic b decays and yields an average b hadron lifetime of 1.533 +/- 0.013 +/- 0.022 ps. Abstract

A two-beam interferometer operating in heterodyne mode was used to determine the velocity and electron number density of a plasma ejected from a cablegun identical to those in the plasma opening switch (POS) of the DECADE pulsed power facility. Time-resolved data were processed via digital phase demodulation techniques to measure electron number density at the two beam locations. Cross-correlation analysis of the two signals provided objective estimates of the effective plasma velocity. Experiments were carried out in unobstructed vacuum and near a flat ungrounded conducting plate to examine the plasma in vacuum and its buildup against the POS cathode. Abstract

The use of recommender systems have become the de-facto standard in e-commerce systems. The most popular recommendation techniques are the collaborative filtering techniques. Their open nature of collaborative recommender systems however allow attackers who inject biased profile data to have an impact on the recommendations produced. The standard memory-based collaborative filtering algorithms, such as k-nearest neighbor, have been shown to be quite vulnerable to such attacks. In this paper, we examine the robustness of model-based recommendation algorithms in the face of profile injection attacks. Specifically, two recommendation algorithms under the Slope One class of algorithms, namely, Weighted Slope One and Improved Slope One, are considered. Additionally, we propose a modified Slope One based algorithm which we call the Robust Weighted Slope One (RWSO) algorithm. Empirically, we show that the Robust Weighted Slope One performs better under profile injection attacks. We also show that the Improved Slope One performs poorly under pre-attack conditions contrary to expectations.

Abstract

The time dependence of $B^0_d--\bar{B}^0_d$ oscillations is measured by the ALEPH experiment at LEP, using three techniques, two of which are updates of previous measurements. In all cases the charge of the decaying $b$ quark and its decay time are measured in one hemisphere of the event; the quark charge at production is tagged mainly using the opposite hemisphere. The first method uses the charge correlation between a $D^{*-}$ and a lepton in the opposite hemisphere; if no lepton is present, the produced quark charge is determined from the hemisphere charges. In the second method, the decay time is measured using a lepton in one hemisphere and the initial state is inferred from the opposite-hemisphere jet charge. The third method uses a lepton in each hemisphere. The data used were collected from 1991 to 1994. The combined result is $\Delta m_d = 0.436\pm 0.033\, {\rm ps}^{-1}$

Abstract

PURPOSE The American Board of Family Medicine has completed the 7-year transition of all of its diplomates into Maintenance of Certification (MOC). Participation in this voluntary process must be broad-based and balanced for MOC to have any practical national impact on health care. This study explores family physicians’ geographic, demographic, and practice characteristics associated with the variations in MOC participation to examine whether MOC has potential as a viable mechanism for dissemination of information or for altering practice.
