151. Creating a Tailored Info App to Promote Self-Management Skills in Persons with Chronic Health Conditions: Development Strategies and User Experience

Abstract

Persons with chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and others, often experience self-management problems that are not disease-specific. These include disrupted sleep, pain, memory issues, and challenges in working with healthcare providers. These patients may benefit from information and skill development for these problems, but simply providing them information in brief sessions during clinical appointments or in handouts or pamphlets may have little impact on their behavior. Providing information tailored to persons' needs and individual characteristics significantly impacts patients' behavior and may increase their abilities to manage their health. However, creating tailored information for each person is labor intensive, making it difficult to use in everyday clinical practice. Computer-based tailoring is an alternative, allowing automated tailoring of information presented to patients based on their interactions with a computer app. This article describes our process in developing a series of modules for chronic disease self-management for persons 40 or older with one or more chronic health conditions.

160. Something in her demanded victimization and terror : theorising violence and sexuality in women's experimental writing of the 1960s and 1970s

Abstract

This thesis considers the apparent preoccupation with restaging and reproducing the drama of sexualised violence in Anglo-American experimental writing by women in the 1960s and 1970s. Chapters 1-3 focus on British experimental authors: Ann Quin, Anna Kavan, Muriel Spark and Eva Figes. Chapter 4 considers North American writers: Valerie Solanas and Kathy Acker. I analyse their texts' negotiation with violence and sexual politics, not only at the level of content or theme, but through their formal and aesthetic qualities. These writers' treatment of themes such as male sexual violence, female sexual victimhood and masochism has prompted anxiety and uncertainty from feminist critics. However, by historicising the effects of their literary experiments, I argue that these works constitute an expansive and productively ambivalent mode of thinking about sexuality and violence, in dialogue with the cultural fantasies that catalysed modern feminist theories of violence. My method demonstrates the useful implications of experimental writing's lack of alignment with the mainstream feminist movement: the ways that it expanded, rather than hindered or regressed, thinking about subjectivity and power. The thesis posits that, at the level of formal and aesthetic innovation, women's experimental writing interrogates ideas of submission, permission, desire, danger, choice and freedom. In my analyses of the various texts, I show how experimental literature deploys thematic and formal strategies that seek to circumvent the difficulties involved in representing structural male violence: to make forms of gendered violence newly perceptible. By diverging from conventions of plot, character and narrative, experimental literature, I suggest, functioned as a useful site for theorising intangible, totalising and supra-human forms of sexual and gender-based violence. I set out this idea in Chapter 1, where I trace persecution paranoia in Quin's Passages (1969) and Figes's Nelly's Version (1977). By evoking a vision of persecutory forces as anonymous, even unknowable, male enemies, these novels index anxieties about the reach and omnipresence of patriarchal power. In Chapter 2, I argue that experimental engagements with the representation of rape in Spark's The Driver's Seat (1970) and Quin's Three (1966) theorise ideas related to sexual consent, disclosing the limitations of female choice and victimhood. In Chapter 3, I take the effects of Kavan's novel Ice (1967), including the repetition of scenes of female sexual torture and domination, as a slippery case study for thinking about the meaning and function of sexually violent fantasy in art. In Chapter 4, I argue that Acker's Blood and Guts in High School (1984) and Solanas's SCUM Manifesto (1967) theorise a problematic insistence upon, and attachment to, female sexual victimhood within mainstream feminism. I position both texts as satires aimed at, in part, the stability of women's presumed condition of dependency, passivity and innocence.

Abstract

Nonresponse bias is a widely prevalent problem for data on education. We develop a ten-step exemplar to guide nonresponse bias analysis (NRBA) in cross-sectional studies and apply these steps to the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11. A key step is the construction of indices of nonresponse bias based on proxy pattern-mixture models for survey variables of interest. A novel feature is to characterize the strength of evidence about nonresponse bias contained in these indices, based on the strength of the relationship between the characteristics in the nonresponse adjustment and the key survey variables. Our NRBA improves existing methods by incorporating both missing at random and missing not at random mechanisms, and all analyses can be done straightforwardly with standard statistical software.

Abstract

As a versatile metal, nickel will experience increased demand in the coming years, with a specific focus on its importance in the battery industry and its role in achieving net-zero emissions. Recognizing the need to ensure sustainable resource management, this study analyses the flow dynamics of nickel’s supply and demand by employing a modelling approach. This is done with a focus on understanding how recycling can contribute to meeting the growing nickel demand. By considering the interaction between mining production, product applications, and recycling rates, this study contributes to a better understanding of the long-term prospects for meeting the nickel demand. It can assist policymakers, industry stakeholders, and investors in making informed decisions regarding resource management and developing sustainable practices in the nickel industry. The results revealed that mining would still play an important role in the supply of nickel for at least the next 40 years. Nickel mining and recycling practices are sufficient to meet future nickel demand if sufficient recycling practices are (rapidly) implemented. Modelling results show that nickel recycling will account for 90% of the total demand (primary nickel mining accounts for the remaining 10%) between the years 2062 and 2096.

180. Content Counts and Motivation Matters: Reading Comprehension in Third-Grade Students Who Are English Learners

Abstract

This study examined the role of science domain knowledge, reading motivation, and decoding skills in reading comprehension achievement in third-grade students who are English learners (ELs) and students who are monolingual, using a nationally representative data set. Multigroup probit regression analyses showed that third-grade science domain knowledge and motivation for reading, decoding skills, and early attainment of decoding skills were significantly associated with third-grade reading comprehension in both language groups. Also, using Wald chi-square tests, the study showed that the association between third-grade science domain knowledge and reading comprehension was stronger in students who were ELs than in students who were monolingual. These findings suggest that cultivating science domain knowledge is very important to supporting reading comprehension development in third grade, particularly for students who are ELs.

181. Competency-Based Theological Education in a Postcolonial Context: Towards a Transformed Competency Framework

Abstract

Background: Assessment of students for ministerial practice is traditionally performed through assignments and oral examinations, which often only concentrate on the knowledge component and outcomes of the programme. Assessing students in this way lead to a view of religious practitioners as people who are not really in touch with their parishioners and communicating in language that is not addressing their needs and this normally leads to a disjuncture between knowledge, practice and context. Disjuncture of this nature signals a need for a broader set of competencies than simply working with and analysing texts in theological education. Aim: The aim of this research is to develop a set of competencies that responds to the reality that the practice of ministry takes place within a rich diversity of postcolonial settings and practices. Setting: The research was done as part of my own interest in developing a competency framework for religious leaders. I am coordinating the Master of Divinity program as well as the Postgraduate Diploma in Christian Ministry at our Faculty of Theology. Both these programs directly relate to the preparation of students for ministerial leadership. Methods: The central research question of this study was formulated as follows: What are the central ingredients for developing a competency framework for ministerial formation from a postcolonial perspective at a research-intensive university in South Africa? The method that was used to answer the research question was a literary study of primary and secondary sources related to a broad set of competencies and then narrowing it down to religious leadership as well as some qualitative empirical research in the form of personal interviews. Results: The research in the article looked at the ways in which a competency framework can help translate generic graduate attributes into a set of competencies that is specific to the field of ministerial training. Some empirical work showed evidence of a growing postcolonial awareness in the development of these competencies. Conclusion: Through this research a competency framework for religious leaders has successfully been developed. The next phase of the research project will be to implement the framework, to have feedback and to make some adjustments. Abstract

Scholars believe that we are amid one of the greatest cultural revolutions since the mass production of books in Gutenberg around 1450. The art of book printing, which originated in Central Europe, turned the world on its head within 10 years. The mass production of books resulted in most people in Europe learning to read in less than one generation, which has led to major changes in all areas of social life and has affected the lives of millions of people for over a hundred years. According to these same scholars, we currently find ourselves in a similar position through what is known as the AI (artificial intelligence). In this article, the researcher wants to come to a better understanding of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and AI as part of it and the way they challenge preachers. The central research question is: In our pursuit to speak the truth of Jesus Christ to the powerful economic elite, what are the challenges and opportunities that the 4IR is posing to preachers?

Abstract

As an evolutionarily ancient sense, olfaction is key to learning where to find food, shelter, mates, and important landmarks in an animal’s environment. Brain circuitry linking odor and navigation appears to be a well conserved multi-region system among mammals; the anterior olfactory nucleus, piriform cortex, entorhinal cortex, and hippocampus each represent different aspects of olfactory and spatial information. We review recent advances in our understanding of the neural circuits underlying odor-place associations, highlighting key choices of behavioral task design and neural circuit manipulations for investigating learning and memory.

Abstract

Background: Much has been written about fathers, fatherhood and premature babies. However, in the South African context, studies about the experiences of fathers having a premature baby are lacking. Aim: This study aimed to explore how South African fathers (n = 10) experience having a premature baby using a descriptive phenomenological approach. Setting: This research study was conducted online using various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Google Meet and through telephonic conversations. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological approach that allowed for the distillation and elucidation of common core experiences among fathers who had a premature baby. Results: The findings demonstrated that the participants experienced intense fears regarding the survival and well-being of their children. They reported experiencing financial difficulties related to hospital bills and experienced being alienated by hospital institutions. Despite these reported barriers, these fathers were adamant in their resolve to support their children and partners during this challenging time. Conclusion: The experiences of fathers were riddled with fear, uncertainty, ambiguity and alienation, which placed them in very precarious situations when trying to navigate their role in a more sensitive and enlightened way. Having a premature infant calls into question the systems that men are positioned within as these systems to a large extent shape these events and how they are experienced. Contribution: This study is original as no other published studies seem to exist in South Africa that speaks to fathers’ lived experiences of having a premature baby.

Abstract

The space ultraviolet (UV) is a critical astronomical observing window, where a multitude of atomic, ionic, and molecular signatures provide crucial insight into planetary, interstellar, stellar, intergalactic, and extragalactic objects. The next generation of large space telescopes require highly sensitive, moderate-to-high resolution UV spectrograph. However, sensitive observations in the UV are difficult, as UV optical performance and imaging efficiencies have lagged behind counterparts in the visible and infrared regimes. This has historically resulted in simple, low-bounce instruments to increase sensitivity. In this study, we present the design, fabrication, and calibration of a simple, high resolution, high throughput far-UV spectrograph - the Colorado High-resolution Echelle Stellar Spectrograph (CHESS). CHESS is a sounding rocket payload to demonstrate the instrument design for the next-generation UV space telescopes. We present tests and results on the performance of several state-of-the-art diffraction grating and detector technologies for far-UV astronomical applications that were flown aboard the first two iterations of CHESS. The CHESS spectrograph was used to study the atomic-to-molecular transitions within translucent cloud regions in the interstellar medium (ISM) through absorption spectroscopy. The first two flights looked at the sightlines towards alpha Virgo and epsilon Persei, and flight results are presented., Comment: pre-print; accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy; 44 pages, 14 figures
