Abstract

Wernicke-Korsakoff encephalopathy (WKE) is a neurologic disease due to a severe thiamine deficiency. This vitamin, an essential cofactor for cellular metabolism, is not produced by the human organism, so its total supply comes from diet, being absorbed from the duodenum. Wernicke described its acute onset in 1881; its classic form is characterized by the triad of ataxia, abnormal mental state, and ocular abnormalities (especially nystagmus). Although it is most commonly associated with chronic alcohol misuse (90% of all cases in USA), other medical conditions resulting in inadequate thiamine intake, such as gastrointestinal disease (vomiting, diarrhea), hyperemesis gravidarum, hemodialysis, sepsis, GI cancer, Crohn’s disease, psychiatric disorders, HIV infection, and malnutrition can determinate the onset of the disease. Another well-established cause of WKE is bariatric surgery. However, in most bariatric surgery-related cases, there were no specific neurological symptoms and no definitive neuroimaging markers were established. Moreover, a recent review upon the most common bariatric procedures showed that the large majority of cases develop in a range of onset between 4 and 12 weeks post-surgery (12 days up to 18 months). No significant difference in the time of onset in the different surgical procedures was observed. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass was the most related procedure (52%), followed by sleeve gastrectomy (21%); biliopancreatic diversion was associated with a small percentage of cases of WKE (3%). Biliopancreatic diversion is a single surgical procedure combining a sleeve gastrectomy and gut bypass, connecting the reduced stomach (about the 20% of the former organ) and the second tract of duodenum with the last part of the small intestine, with the aim to reduce calorie and nutrient absorption. Abstract

Il saggio ha come oggetto la produzione di albi illustrati in Italia nel trentennio che va dalla data fatidica del 1987 – individuata da Antonio Faeti come uno spartiacque fondamentale nell'evoluzione delle letteratura per l'infanzia in Italia – e il 2017. La riflessione muove dalla metamorfosi della figura dell'illustratore di libri per bambini nel corso del Novecento, la cui professionalità ha conosciuto radicali cambiamenti nel segno di una complessità e di un riconoscimento sociale che negli ultimi decenni sono diventati sempre più manifesti, e propone una sintetica mappatura di quello che è successo nel trentennio preso in esame: con un'attenzione specifica alle tipologie testuali implicate (fiction e non fiction picturebooks), alle forme della rappresentazione (dal realismo mimetico alle forme della stilizzazione) e agli strumenti di lavoro adoperati (da quelli tradizionali come l'acquarello e le tempere ai nuovi mezzi digitali).

Abstract

Il contributo si concentra sull’opera letteraria dell’artista australiano Shaun Tan, che nel corso degli ultimi vent’anni ha progettato, scritto e illustrato numerosi libri per bambini (e non solo), confrontandosi con una molteplicità di forme testuali e tecniche espressive e riuscendo a imporsi a livello internazionale quale ineludibile punto di riferimento. Sebbene tanto varî negli stili espressivi adottati, i suoi libri sono legati tra loro da sottili fili rossi che rimandano a due principi fondamentali: l’idea che la letteratura possa essere luogo di meraviglia e di riflessione (territorio dell’incertezza interpretativa e dunque significativa occasione di educazione all’ascolto) e l’idea che la testualità, anche nei libri per bambini, vada liberata dalle pastoie delle convenzioni e dell’omologazione, rappresentando un’occasione unica di sperimentazione di forme e di intrecci tra linguaggi e tecniche. All’interno di tale visione dell’arte del racconto è centrale, per Tan, il concetto di periferia, da intendersi sia come spazio reale, teatro di molte delle storie, sia come spazio concettuale e simbolico, al tempo stesso luogo di germinazione delle idee e territorio ideale di incontro con l’alterità e il mistero: ed è proprio in questo luogo liminare, di confine, analogo ai boschi della tradizione fiabesca, che il discorso critico trova il suo punto focale, arrivando a toccare la grande questione che in maniera più o meno esplicita o trasfigurata è sempre presente nei lavori di Tan: la questione dell’appartenenza, cui è strettamente legato il tema dell’identità e che proprio nella periferia – intesa anche e proprio come spazio concettuale – trova il suo punto di scaturigine.

Abstract

Il presente saggio ha come oggetto la storia editoriale e la ricezione in Italia dello Struwwelpeter, il nostro Pierino Porcospino. L’analisi prende in esame documenti storici, testi letterari e riflessioni critiche sviluppatesi nell’arco di quasi due secoli e intende mostrare l’ambivalenza dell’opera di Hoffmann, apparentemente esemplare rispetto ai canoni dell’educazione borghese ottocentesca, autoritaria e repressiva, ma al tempo stesso sua intima, per quanto forse inconscia, critica. This essay deals with the editorial history and the reception of Struwwelpeter [Pierino Porcospino] in Italy. The analysis examines historical documents, literary texts and critical reflections developed over almost two centuries, and intends to show the ambiguity of Hoffmann’s work, seemingly exemplary for what concerns the 19th-century authoritarian and repressive bourgeois education but, at the same time, its deep, perhaps unconscious, critique.

Le analisi chimico fisiche del processo di carbonizzazione di una carbonaia tradizionale, iniziate nell'autunno del 2016, sono inserite all'interno del progetto di ricerca interdisciplinare AIAL Archeologia carbonaie Alpi Ledrensi , volto a conoscere le conseguenze che questa pratica ha avuto nella comunità, nell'ambiente e nel paesaggio che li ha coinvolti. Il carbone di legno è stato un prodotto energetico importantissimo per il territorio delle Alpi Ledrensi fino all'immediato secondo dopo guerra. Attualmente è un'attività residuale che ci può fornire molte informazioni su questa lavorazione del recente passato che ha coinvolto per secoli questa e altre zone delle Alpi. Questo lavoro analizza i dati raccolti durante due campagne di misurazioni sulla evoluzione delle temperature e dei gas incombusti all'interno della carbonaia. Inoltre fornisce dati quantitativi sui gas e sul particolato emesso durante le fasi di lavorazione. Queste informazioni risultano molto importanti in quanto la letteratura scientifica ha poco indagato questi aspetti che sono alla base per la comprensione degli impatti sull'ambiente.

Nell"ambito di un progetto di ricerca del CNR volto a migliorare e innovare l"attuale processo di produzione di una ditta di pavimenti in legno al fine di minimizzare la presenza di eventuali composti nocivi (formaldeide e composti organici volatili VOC) e di massimizzare i benefici per il consumatore in termini di salubrità, sono state raccolte leggi, normative e norme tecniche in merito alle emissioni di queste sostanze dai pavimenti e dagli arredi in ambiente domestico. Il sistema attuale di produzione di pavimenti e arredamenti in legno o in prodotti a base legno prevede l"impiego di adesivi e prodotti di finitura delle superfici, vernici ed oli, selezionati in funzione delle prestazioni attese. Tali prodotti causano l"emissione di molecole organiche sia durante l"applicazione ma anche successivamente, in concentrazioni ridotte ma persistenti, durante l"impiego del manufatto in legno. Le attività di monitoraggio dei VOC e la valutazione dei fattori di rischio per la salute, risultano elementi fondamentali all"individuazione delle misure necessarie a prevenire e a ridurre i livelli di concentrazione degli inquinanti nell"ambiente domestico. Nel contesto generale dello studio della qualità dell"aria indoor, si è posta prioritariamente l"attenzione ai VOC che costituiscono una classe rilevante di inquinanti negli ambienti confinati, con caratteristiche peculiari fra una sostanza e l"altra e con impatti diversi in relazione a fattori quali la persistenza ambientale, la tossicità e la soglia olfattiva. In generale i VOC possono essere classificati, a seconda della loro tipologia e dose assunta, come benefici per l"organismo oppure tossici ed è per questo necessaria un"attenta tipizzazione delle emissioni volatili. L"Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità classifica i VOC in 4 gruppi (molto volatili, volatili, semivolatili, materiale particellare) in base ai punti di ebollizione, con un limite inferiore tra 50-100°C e un limite superiore fra 240-260°C.

La presente riflessione muove dalla constatazione di una sempre maggiore ed estesa consapevolezza rispetto alla saturazione da impegni che caratterizza la vita contemporanea di adulti e di bambini in Europa. Troppe cose da fare e troppo poco tempo a disposizione per farle hanno come conseguenza inevitabile l’abitudine alla fretta e alla superficialità e frammentarietà dell’attenzione, come dimostrano i tanti elogi della lentezza e gli inviti alla sosta formulati da filosofi, sociologi e pedagogisti contemporanei. L’uso del linguaggio che connota la scrittura poetica – caratterizzato da condensazione e apertura semantica – impone al lettore uno sforzo di comprensione più intenso rispetto a quello richiesto da un uso piano e ordinario del linguaggio: lo sforzo necessario per superare la distanza generata dalle scelte espressive adottate, che rendono il linguaggio stesso campo di avventura ed enigma, invito alla riflessione, possibilità di senso. L’esperienza di lettura e confronto ermeneutico sul testo poetico rappresenta, per questa ragione, interessanti spazi di lavoro, sia nell’ottica di promuovere l’abito mentale della lentezza riflessiva come modello di incontro col testo, sia per favorire l’ascolto reciproco, dischiudendo ampi spazi di lavoro sul tema del dialogo come modello di relazione con gli altri nonché come strumento giocoso e concreto di educazione alla cittadinanza., This reflection moves from the observation of a growing and extensive awareness of the saturation commitments that characterizes contemporary life of adults and children in Europe. Too much to do and too little time to make it have as an inevitable consequence the habit of haste and superficiality and fragmentation of attention, as demonstrated by the many praises of slowness and invitations to stop formulated by philosophers, sociologists and educationalists contemporaries . The use of language that characterizes poetic writing - connoted by condensation and semantic openness - requires the reader a more intense effort to understand than that required by a plane and ordinary use of language: the effort needed to bridge the gap created by the expressive choices adopted, that make the language itself field of adventure and mystery, invitation to reflection, possibility of sense. Reading experience and hermeneutic debate on poetic texts represent for this reason interesting work spaces, both in order to promote the mental habit of reflective slowness as a meeting template with text, both to facilitate reciprocal listening, opening up wide opportunities to work on dialogue as a model of relationship with others as well as a playful and concrete instrument of citizenship education.

194. Effects of the single and combined treatment with dopamine agonist, somatostatin analog and mTOR inhibitors in a human lung carcinoid cell line: an in vitro study

Abstract

Somatostatin analogues and mTOR inhibitors have been used as medical therapy in lung carcinoids with variable results. No data are available on dopamine agonists as treatment for lung carcinoids. The main aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of the combined treatment of somatostatin analogue octreotide and the dopamine agonist cabergoline with mTOR inhibitors in an in vitro model of typical lung carcinoids: the NCI-H727 cell line. In NCI-H727 cell line, reverse transcriptase-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence were assessed to characterize the expression of the somatostatin receptor 2 and 5, dopamine receptor 2 and mTOR pathway components. Fifteen typical lung carcinoids tissue samples have been used for somatostatin receptor 2, dopamine receptor 2, and the main mTOR pathway component p70S6K expression and localization by immunohistochemistry. Cell viability, fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis and western blot have been assessed to test the pharmacological effects of octreotide, cabergoline and mTOR inhibitors, and to evaluate the activation of specific cell signaling pathways in NCI-H727 cell line. NCI-H727 cell line expressed somatostatin receptor 2, somatostatin receptor 5 and dopamine receptor 2 and all mTOR pathway components at messenger and protein levels. Somatostatin receptor 2, dopamine receptor 2, and p70S6K (non phosphorylated and phosphorylated) proteins were expressed in most typical lung carcinoids tissue samples. Octreotide and cabergoline did not reduce cell viability as single agents but, when combined with mTOR inhibitors, they potentiate mTOR inhibitors effect after long-term exposure, reducing Akt and ERK phosphorylation, mTOR escape mechanisms, and increasing the expression DNA-damage-inducible transcript 4, an mTOR suppressor. In conclusion, the single use of octreotide and cabergoline is not sufficient to block cell viability but the combined approach of these agents with mTOR inhibitors might reduce the mTOR inhibitors-induced escape mechanisms and/or activate the endogenous mTOR suppressor, potentiating the effect of the mTOR inhibitors in an in vitro model of typical lung carcinoids. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Abstract

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient modulating several physiopathological processes in the human body. The aim of the study is to characterize the molecular effects determined by Se-supplementation in thyroid follicular cells, using as model the well-differentiated rat thyroid follicular cell line FRTL5. Experiments have been performed to evaluate the effects of Se on cell growth, mortality and proliferation and on modulation of pro- and antiapoptotic pathways. The results indicate that Se-supplementation improves FRTL5 growth rate. Furthermore, Se reduces the proportion of cell death and modulates both proapoptotic (p53 and Bim) and antiapoptotic (NF-kB and Bcl2) mRNA levels. In addition, incubation with high doses of Na-Se might prevent the ER-stress apoptosis induced by tunicamycin, as assessed by membrane integrity maintenance, reduction in caspase 3/7 activities, and reduction in Casp-3 and PARP cleavage. Taken together, these results provide molecular evidences indicating the role of Se supplementation on cell death and apoptosis modulation in thyroid follicular cells. These observations may be useful to understand the effects of this micronutrient on the physiopathology of the thyroid gland.
