In 1913, Paul Rabe, one of the physicians of the only psychiatric Institution on the island, wondered about the reasons for the premature death of those confined for general paralysis. As a matter of fact, their life expectancy did not exceed a few months versus over ten years for metropolitan patients. Having dismissed organic or material considerations related to confinement as the possible causes of such morbidity, Rabe came to the conclusion that this mortality could be accounted for by the complexity of colonial daily life.
