Primary osteosarcoma of sphenoid and ethmoid sinus present as a challenge in head neck cancer. A 17 year female presented with left sided hemifacial pain, headache with nasal discharge. Clinico-radiological finding showed mass in sphenoethmoid recess spreading to adjacent structures. Endoscopic resection was done. Histopathological diagnosis was osteosarcoma of sphenoid and ethmoid sinus. Adjuvant chemotherapy administered. Osteosarcomas of sphenoid and ethmoid sinus are aggressive tumors with variable clinical features warranting high clinical suspicion.

EnglishThis report describes the clinical, pathological, and molecular aspects of a pneumonia by Cryptococcus neoformans in a goat in the Southern region of Brazil. A goat with a history of prolonged transportation presented dyspnea, nasal discharge and cough, and was subjected to necropsy, histopathology, and mycological evaluation. Grossly, cranio-ventral pulmonary consolidation was observed, characterized by firm and grayish areas interspersed with dark red foci. Histopathology of the lungs showed areas of parenchymal necrosis, containing blastoconidia with a slightly basophilic central cell, surrounded by an unstained capsule. It was associated with moderate granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate and peripheral fibrosis. The capsule and fungus cell exhibited marked Alcian Blue and periodic acid-Schiff staining, respectively. Diagnosis of fungal pneumonia by C. neoformans was based on clinical, pathological, and molecular findings. Na analise histopatologica dos pulmoes foram evidenciadas areas de necrose do parenquima, que continham blastoconideos com celula central levemente basofilica, circundada por capsula nao corada, associados a moderado infiltrado inflamatorio granulomatoso e fibrose periferica. A capsula e a celula do fungo foram fortemente coradas pelo azul alciano e pelo acido periodico de Schiff, respectivamente. O diagnostico de pneumonia fungica por C. neoformans foi baseado nos achados clinicos, patologicos e moleculares. 35 males and 25 female patients aged between 18–40 were studied. There were three types of DNS. Left deviation were 35(58.3%), right deviation were 20(33.3%) and 5(8.3%) were bilateral. The symptoms were bilateral. The symptoms were nasal observation24(40%), nasal discharge 12(20%), headache 10(16.6%), 9(15%) bleeding per nose, 5 (8.3%) had loss of smell. Post-operative complicated were bleeding 1%, residual deforming or deviation was 5.2%, syneche was.5.50% and septal perforation was 0%.Relief after post endoscopic septoplasty were nasal obstruction 94%, headache 82% nasal discharge 84.5%, Hyposmia 86.5%. This study of deviated nasal septum will be quite useful to ENT surgeons, radiologis and physician to correlate the percentage of relief from various complications after endoscopic septoplasty.

Two adult sport horses were referred for respiratory noise, exercise intolerance, coughing and nasal discharge containing food material. An asymmetrical, mild to moderate defect of the soft palate was diagnosed and surgically treated by laryngeal tie-forward procedure (LTFP). The immediate postoperative endoscopic images were satisfactory; the epiglottis was in normal alignment, dorsal to the soft palate defect in both cases. When contacted respectively four months and three years after surgery, owners of both horses declared being satisfied with the outcome of surgery as initial clinical signs had reduced or disappeared. Follow-up endoscopy showed some retraction of the larynx in both horses but the reduction of the palatal defect was adequate. This report demonstrates that horses can reach adulthood with certain soft palate defects and that severity of clinical signs varies between individuals. The authors suggest considering LTFP as an option in adult horses with small-to-moderate cleft palates causing clinical signs.

The rhinolith is massed in a mineral nugget in the nasal cavity, which is the result of the accumulation of salts around the nidus. The nidus may be endogenous or exogenous. Long-term and unilateral nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, pain and malodor are major complaints. However, sometimes, they may not show any signs for years and maybe detected incidentally during a routine examination. In this study, we present a case of giant rhinolith with headache and nasal obstruction complaints.

Purpose. The antibacterial effect of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) solution on nasal secretion of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) was investigated. Materials and Methods. Five swab specimens were collected from the middle meatus of CRS patients. The first one was placed directly in a Thanswab tube while all of the others were placed randomly into 4 glass tubes containing either HOCl solution, normal saline (NS), 75% alcohol, or povidone-iodine (PVPI) solution for one minute in the first part and for 5 minutes in the second part of the study before transfer to a Thanswab tube. Results. Bacteria were cultured from 27 of 50 specimens when they were put directly in a Thanswab tube and from 26 after soaking in HOCl solution, 27 in NS, 13 in 75% alcohol, and 25 in PVPI solution for one minute. In the second part of the study, bacteria were cultured from 14 of 32 specimens when they were put directly in a Thanswab tube and from 14 after soaking in HOCl solution, 13 in NS, 3 in 75% alcohol, and 11 in PVPI solution for 5 minutes. Conclusions. This study showed that HOCL solution did not exert an antibacterial effect on nasal secretion from CRS patients within 5 minutes.

We report clinical and pathological features of enzootic nasal adenocarcinoma (ENA) in one sheep in Algeria. A one-year-old Ouled Djellal sheep from a large herd (~1240 animals), located in Bordj Bou Arreridj, Algeria, was clinically diagnosed by the presence of persistent seromucous nasal discharge, head shaking, muzzle licking, dyspnoea, exophthalmia and frontal protrusion. The sheep was euthanized, and the necropsy was performed. Gross examination showed soft touch, pinkish-white tumour masses in the nasal cavities with distortion of the turbinates and of the medium septum. According to clinical and pathological findings, the tumour has been defined as a low grade mixed nasal adenocarcinoma, with the presence of tubular and papillary structures. This is, to our knowledge, the first report of ENA in Algeria known to be associated with enzootic nasal tumour virus (ENTV) infection. The present study was conducted to identify and characterize the bovine Acholeplasma laidlawii from 1120 clinically ill buffaloes and 470 lungs collected from buffaloes at abattoir of Karachi. All buffaloes were clinically examined and around 467 (13.48%) buffaloes had signs of respiratory distress including sticky nasal discharge, sunken eyes, dyspnea and fever. All the culture positive samples were further evaluated by PCR using specific primers of A. laidlawii and the amplified product to re-validate the sequence of the specie. This revealed that suspected buffaloes, 92 (2.66%) from nasal discharge and 44 (4.03%) from lung tissue samples respectively were positive for A. laidlawii. Rests of the samples were still under investigation. However it is first time proclaimed on research basis that A. laidlawii was infecting the buffaloes in Pakistan and precautionary measures should be taken to prevent losses from this specie in the months of October and April.

Background and study aims: Unsedated transnasal esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (UT-EGD) has been performed for at least two decades but many techniques related to the procedure have yet to be standardized. We aimed to develope a simple endoscopic method, anterior meatuscopy, to replace the sniff test for selecting the most patent nasal meatus before UT-EGD. We hypothesized that access to the common nasal meatus (CNM), if confirmed by anterior meatuscopy, was a safer route than the inferior (INM) and middle nasal meatuses (MNM) because it would result in reduced epistaxis, nasal pain, and nasal discharge. Patients and methods: We used anterior meatuscopy and an endoscopic meatus scoring scale (EMSS) to identify the optimal meatus for insertion. We evaluated the EMSS frequency distributions for the INM, CNM, and MNM and the reliability of a sniff test in 1,000 consecutive patients. The adverse effects of passing through the CNM versus the INM and MNM, respectively, were compared. Results: In the INM and MNM, the EMSS frequencies were grade I > II > III > 0 whereas those in the CNM were grade II > I > 0 > III. A sniff test was not reliable, given its low sensitivity (63.3 %), specificity (67.3 %), positive predictive value (69.1 %), negative predictive value (61.4 %), and accuracy (65.2 %). Although only 9.2 % of our patients had grade III anterior-to-posterior CNMs, passage through this spacious CNM rather than through the MNM or the INM could significantly reduce epistaxis, nasal pain, and nasal discharge. Conclusions: Anterior meatuscopy is more reliable than a sniff test before UT-EGD. Transnasal endoscopic passage through the endoscopically patent CNM, if detected by anterior meatuscopy, may prevent epistaxis and nasal pain and minimize nasal discharge.

Background Although facial cleanliness is part of the SAFE strategy for trachoma there is controversy over the reliability of measuring a clean face. A child’s face with no ocular and nasal discharge is clean and the endpoint of interest, regardless of the number of times it must be washed to achieve that endpoint. The issue of reliability rests on the reproducibility of graders to assess a clean face. We report the reproducibility of assessing a clean face in a field trial in Kongwa, Tanzania. Methods/Findings Seven graders were trained to assess the presence and absence of nasal and ocular discharge on children’s faces. Sixty children ages 1–7 years were recruited from a community and evaluated independently by seven graders, once and again about 50 minutes later. Intra-and inter-observer variation was calculated using unweighted kappa statistics. The average intra-observer agreement was kappa = 0.72, and the average inter-observer agreement was kappa = 0.78. Conclusions Intra-observer and inter-observer agreement was substantial for the assessment of clean faces using trained Tanzania staff who represent a variety of educational backgrounds. As long as training is provided, the estimate of clean faces in children should be reliable, and reflect the effort of families to keep ocular and nasal discharge off the faces. These data suggest assessment of clean faces could be added to trachoma surveys, which already measure environmental improvements, in districts., Author summary The repeated infection that causes trachoma is spread from person to person via infected ocular and nasal secretions. The World Health Organization (WHO) strategy for trachoma control includes keeping children’s faces clean of discharges, yet “clean faces” are not measured in most of the district surveys that evaluate the impact of programs. We studied the reliability of assessing “clean faces” in 60 children in a village in Tanzania, using trained Tanzania staff with a variety of educational backgrounds. When assessing the same child twice after 50 minutes, the staff showed substantial agreement with themselves. The agreement between a senior grader and each staff member was also excellent. The data suggest that clean faces in children can be reliably assessed, and should be added to district surveys that are measuring the impact of programs on control of trachoma.

Mycoplasma bovirhinis , a mycoplasmal species involved in bovine respiratory diseases, is also a commensal microorganism that inhabits the bovine respiratory and reproductive organs. We present the complete 948,039-bp genome sequence of M. bovirhinis strain HAZ141_2, which was isolated from bovine nasal discharge in Japan.

The present work was designed to study the relation between the rate of strangles infection in equine and seasonal incidence in Cairo and Giza governorates, beside the isolation and identification of Streptococcus equi. Seventyeight horses of different ages have been studied for S.equiinfection along the period lasted between January 2014 and December 2015. The most frequent clinical symptoms was the nasal discharge (100%), then signs like abscess formation and fever have been presented by 71.8% and 33.3% respectively. Most of clinical cases have been detected in age of six to twelve months (71.15%). Most of strangles-positive cases have recorded in winter season (60.03%) followed by spring (20%) and summer (18%). According to the biochemical results 75% of clinical cases caused by S. equi followed by S. zooepidemicus.S. equiinfection has been confirmed by the PCR technology through detection of Sod A gene.

SUMMARYAn outbreak of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was detected during the ongoing community-based surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI). Among reported 119 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 cases (59 cases in the year 2012 and 60 cases in 2015) in summer months, common clinical features were fever (100%), cough (90·7%), sore throat (85·7%), nasal discharge (48·7%), headache (55·5%), fatigue (18·5%), breathlessness (3·4%), and ear discharge (1·7%). Rise in ILI cases were negatively correlated with the seasonal factors such as relative humidity (Karl Pearson's correlation coefficient, i.e. r = −0·71 in the year 2012 and r = −0·44 in the year 2015), while rise in ILI cases were positively correlated with the temperature difference (r = 0·44 in the year 2012 and r = 0·77 in the year 2015). The effective reproduction number R, was estimated to be 1·30 in 2012 and 1·64 in 2015. The study highlights the rise in unusual influenza activity in summer month with high attack rate of ILI among children aged ⩽9 years. Children in this age group may need special attention for influenza vaccination. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 outbreak was confirmed in inter-seasonal months during the surveillance of ILI in Pune, India, 2012–2015.

Summary Reasons for performing study Empyema of the nasal conchal bullae has recently been identified in horses suffering from chronic unilateral nasal discharge. The diagnosis and management of such cases has not been reported previously. Objectives To describe the diagnosis and treatment of cases suffering from empyema of the nasal conchal bullae and report the frequency of diagnosis from a population of horses referred for head computed tomography (CT). Study design Retrospective case review. Methods Records from cases diagnosed with nasal conchal bulla disease using CT were reviewed. Results Abnormalities of the nasal conchal bullae were identified by CT in 10 cases (8 ventral conchal bulla, 2 dorsal conchal bulla), from 102 equine head CT examinations. Eight cases were subsequently treated at the study clinic, 7 of which had concurrent paranasal sinus disease. In 3 cases, fenestration of the ventral conchal bulla per nasum facilitated drainage and clearance of empyema. Conclusions Disease of the conchal bullae should be considered as a potential cause of chronic unilateral nasal discharge in horses. Clearance of empyema within these bullae is unlikely to occur through lavage of the paranasal sinuses alone. Where necessary, fenestration of the bulla allows physical removal of infected material.

Background. A laryngectomy affects many of a patient’s functions. Besides speech and respiratory-tract problems, olfaction and gustation problems can also have an influence on the quality of life. The aim of this study was to find out how often various nasal problems and decreased gustation appear after a laryngectomy. Patients and methods. One hundred and five laryngectomized patients (9 women, 96 men, aged 45-88 years), treated in two tertiary centers, were included in the study. They completed a questionnaire about various nasal problems, olfactory and gustatory capabilities, possible allergies and irritants in their environment, and the impact of the nasal and gustation problems on their quality of life. Results. Olfaction was impaired in 51.4%, and was even not possible in 30.5%, of patients. Decreased gustation abilities were reported in 26.7%, and dysgeusia in 11.4%, of patients. Almost 21% of patients were bothered by an impaired gustatory ability and 50.5% of patients were affected by their loss of olfaction. Frequent nasal discharge was reported in 20%, frequent sneezing in 58.1%, and nasal itching in 33.3% of the laryngectomized patients. There were no correlations between the age and the olfaction and gustation abilities and between the allergy and the nasal symptoms, whereas the correlation between olfaction and gustation appeared significant (p=0.025). Conclusions. Various nasal and gustatory problems were reported in more than 80% of laryngectomized patients. The olfaction and gustation abilities are connected and have a substantial impact on the quality of life. Like in the case of speech, the rehabilitation of olfaction is also necessary in all laryngectomized patients and must take place soon after the completion of the treatment.

The finding of intranasal ectopic or supernumerary tooth although have been reported in the past, is still considered a rare presentation. It may remain silent for a long period of time, before manifesting with nasal symptoms. We report the case of a 33-year-old lady with an ectopic pre-molar tooth in the floor of her right nostril, presenting with intermittent epistaxis and foul-smelling nasal discharge. She was referred for a rhinolith in her nose. The tooth was successfully extracted via intranasal endoscopic approach. In our modern medical practice, rhinoliths are a rare occurrence, but they ought to be considered in the differential diagnosis of a long-standing nasal obstruction. They are known to cause unilateral nasal discharge, facial pain, headache, epistaxis, and nasal obstruction. We present two cases that we encountered in our practice, and discuss them with a review of the existing literature.

OBJECTIVES To compare characteristics of nasal discharge caused by different intranasal aetiologies in dogs. METHODS Medical records of 105 dogs with nasal discharge due to intranasal disease were retrospectively reviewed with special focus on composition, severity, duration and localisation of discharge. On the basis of diagnostic findings, cases were classified into different disease groups and characteristics of discharge were compared between groups. RESULTS Cases were classified as having non-specific rhinitis (n=42), nasal neoplasia (n=23), foreign bodies (n=21), nasal mycosis (n=7) and miscellaneous disorders (n=13). Dogs with foreign bodies or nasal mycosis were significantly younger. Mucous components of discharge occurred more often in non-specific rhinitis and nasal neoplasia, although haemorrhagic components predominated in nasal neoplasia when discharge lasted e14 days. Pure or mixed haemorrhagic discharge was significantly more common with nasal neoplasia, foreign bodies and nasal mycosis. Purulent components were associated with longer duration of discharge and predominantly seen in non-specific rhinitis and foreign bodies. Dogs with foreign bodies were presented earlier and sneezing was more frequent. Nasal stridor was significantly more often observed in dogs with nasal neoplasia. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Characteristics of nasal discharge and associated clinical signs might aid in planning the diagnostic approach, but a combination of diagnostic techniques is still required to confirm a diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the diagnostic value of symptom duration and purulent rhinorrhea in adults suspected of having acute bacterial rhinosinusitis.DATA SOURCES:PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library.REVIEW METHODS:We performed a comprehensive systematic search on March 28, 2013. We included studies on the diagnostic value of duration of symptoms and purulent rhinorrhea in patients suspected of having acute bacterial rhinosinusitis. We assessed study design of included articles for directness of evidence and risk of bias. We extracted prevalence and positive and negative predictive values.RESULTS:Of 4173 unique publications, we included 1 study with high directness of evidence and moderate risk of bias. The prior probability of bacterial rhinosinusitis was 0.29 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.24-0.35); we could not extract posterior probabilities. Odds ratios (95% CI) from univariate analysis were 1.03 (0.78-1.36) for duration of symptoms and 2.69 (1.39-5.18) for colored discharge on the floor of the nasal cavity.CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION:We included 1 study with moderate risk of bias, reporting data in such a manner that we could not assess the value of symptom duration and purulent rhinorrhea in adults suspected of having acute bacterial rhinosinusitis. Recommendations to distinguish between a viral and a bacterial source based on purulent rhinorrhea are not supported by evidence, and the decision to prescribe antibiotic treatment should not depend on its presence. Based on judgment driven by theory and subsidiary evidence of a greater likelihood of bacterial rhinosinusitis after 10 days, antibiotic therapy may seem a reasonable empirical option.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common health problems which incurs significant medical costs and has severe impact on lower airway diseases and general health of the patient. The aim of this study was to describe the demographic and clinical profile of chronic rhinosinusitis patients.Methods: In this study 94 patients were included. After taking a brief history, their clinical symptoms were assessed using SNSG test (sino nasal symptom grading test). The findings were further confirmed by diagnostic nasal endoscopy. Results: We found that maximum number of patients were in the age group of 18-27 years with a slight male preponderance. Also rural population had more cases of CRS with nasal discharge being the commonest complaint at the time of presentation. After diagnostic nasal endoscopy (DNE) it was found that ethmoidal polyps are more common in CRS patients however more number of CRS patients presented without polyps.Conclusions: We conclude that chronic rhinosinusitis manifests more in male and rural population with nasal discharge and ethomoidal polyps being the most common presentation. The subjective assessment of clinical symptoms could be done by SNSG test; however it further requires detailed studies.

Unilateral rhinorrhoea in the paediatric age group could be an alarming sign that warrants a clinician attention. These patients are routinely brought to see general practitioner as parents may not be aware of the urgency to intervene surgically. Herein we describe a case of a toddler who presented initially to a general practitioner with unilateral nasal discharge. He was subsequently referred to the otorhinolaryngology department for unresolved rhinitis. The child was examined, and the diagnosis of an embedded foreign body was made. X-ray of the paranasal sinus unveiled an embedded button battery. An emergency endoscopic retrieval of the button battery was performed under general anaesthesia. Unfortunately, the case was complicated with a huge septal perforation.

Background: Nasal polyps are defined as pearly white, prolapsed, pendunculated oedematous Sino-nasal mucosa. They are unique in their position and their composition. Many hypotheses concerning its pathogenesis have been proposed. But till now there is no clear evidence for any single cause. This study was taken-up to study the clinical profile of cases with sino-nasal polyps.Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Otolaryngology at Vijayanagara Institution of Medical Sciences, Bellary, between January 2016 to April 2016 involving 60 patients fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria. Pre-tested and edited proforma was used to collect the data. Results: Out of 60 participants, 63.4% were males, mean age was 29.5 years. Ethmoidal polyp (63.4%) was the most common polyp followed by antrochoanal polyp (33.4%). Ethmoidal polyp was most commonly observed 31-40 years age while antrochoanal polyp was observed in 11-20 years age. Ethmoidal polyp and antrochoanal polyp were observed more commonly in males and females respectively. The most common presenting symptoms were nasal obstruction and nasal discharge.Conclusions: Ethmoidal polyps are the most commonly observed sino-nasal polyps followed by antrochoanal polyp. Ethmoidal polyp was more commonly observed in adult age group while antrochoanal polyp was observed in children. The most common presenting symptoms were nasal obstruction and nasal discharge.

Nasal cavity schwannomas are uncommon lesions, representing less than 4% of all head and neck schwannomas. They give rise to nonspecific symptoms such as nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and anosmia. Here we report a 18year old girl who presented with nasal discharge and recurrent epistaxis for four months.

A fourteen-year-old boy was admitted for three-week history of fever and nasal discharge, which persisted despite five days of antibiotics prescribed by general practitioner. After admission, he developed generalised tonic clonic convulsion for two minutes, with postictal drowsiness. Urgent computed tomography (CT) brain was performed.

This report describes a cat infected with the feline infectious virus and a 1 yr history of unilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge. Intraoral radiography and endoscopic examination revealed the presence of a large fragment of tooth root in the right nasal cavity. The cat had previously undergone maxillary canine tooth (104) extraction. The root was successfully removed by an endoscopic-assisted procedure, and follow-up examination 1 yr later documented complete disappearance of the respiratory signs.

A 5-year-old female had history of chronic foul smelling nasal discharge. Rhinoscopy showed greenish crusts lining the nasal cavities and inferior turbinates were shriveled significantly. Nasal cavity cultures of crusts by swab revealed Klebsiella ozaenae making the diagnosis of primary atrophic rhinosinusitis. After several unsuccessful treatment, we have decided to try sulfamethoxazole–trimethoprim prophylaxis and 1 year later there was a complete clinical improvement. There are many medical therapies and surgical options described, but none of them showed effective at long term. We present antibiotic prophylaxis as a viable alternative for long term control of the disease.

An Aberdeen Angus cow presented to the R(D)SVS with a history of ill thrift and unilateral nasal discharge. Radiographic examination revealed a fluid line in the right maxillary sinus. A diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis was made. After failure to respond to antibiotic therapy the sinusitis was treated by trephination and lavage by an in-dwelling catheter.

Allergic Rhinitis is a disease charac terized by sudden and frequent attacks of sneezing, profuse watery nasal discharge associated with nasal obstruction which is intermittent, watering of the eyes, heaviness of head, respiratory distress and anosmia. The present study aims to comparatively evaluate the clinical efficacy of shadbindu gritha nasya with haridra khanda internally in pratishayaya. The principle objective of the study is to find a m ost effective, economical and simple treatment for pratishayaya. Here 45 patients of pratishyaya - Allergic Rhinitis were treated in 3 groups . 15 patient of gr oup A treated with Shadbindu gri tha Nasya. 15 patient of group B treated with Haridrakhanda orally . 15 patient of group C treated with both Shadbindu gr i tha n asya and h aridrakhanda as a combined therapy. After the enrollment of the patients in the study , vital signs and symptoms of Pratishyaya Allergic rhinitis such as Nasa srava, Khavatu, Nasa ava r odh a, gala talu shus ka ta, were studied before and after the treatment. The results of the study indicated that the group c bestowed with highly significant relief in almost all the signs and symptoms in comparison to group A and group B.

SummaryReasons for performing study Horses, usually foals, with a congenital defect of the soft palate have been reported infrequently, and most reports describe a surgical procedure to repair the defect. Results of conservative management have not been previously reported. Objective To describe 15 horses affected with soft palate defects that were presented for examination when mature. Study design Retrospective case series. Methods Clinical records from horses identified as having been diagnosed with a soft palate defect when older than one year were reviewed retrospectively. Follow-up was obtained wherever possible. Results Nasal discharge, occasional coughing and abnormal respiratory noise at exercise were the most common reasons for presentation. Only one yearling had mild symptoms of aspiration pneumonia. Many were able to perform at least low-intensity ridden activities and 2 Thoroughbreds raced successfully without surgical treatment. Surgical correction was attempted in 3 horses but was only partially successful in 2. The other horses were not treated surgically and no deterioration in severity of clinical signs was reported in the long term. The prevalence of survival in this case series was 100%. Conclusions and potential relevance This case series shows that some foals may survive to maturity with substantial congenital defects of the soft palate without displaying severe clinical signs. Given the published high incidence of morbidity and mortality associated with surgical treatment, this case series suggests that a reasonable alternative is to manage such cases conservatively, provided that they are not suffering from severe pneumonia or ill thrift and that their welfare is not compromised.

Subepiglottic cysts (SECs) are an infrequent cause of upper respiratory tract noise and exercise intolerance in horses. They may also be associated with no clinical signs and be an incidental finding during routine upper airway endoscopy. The aim of this study was to assess the effect on performance of horses undergoing surgical removal of SECs. The case records of 15 horses (1995-2009) diagnosed with SECs were retrieved. Eleven (73%) of the 15 horses included in the study were Thoroughbred racehorses. Eleven (73%) of the 15 horses had no preoperative clinical signs related to the SECs, with the remaining 4 (27%) having a respiratory noise (n = 4), nasal discharge (n = 1), difficulty swallowing (n = 1) or a cough (n = 1). Endoscopic examination in the standing horse was diagnostic in 93% (n = 14) of horses. Nine (82%) of the 11 Thoroughbred horses were yearlings, of which only one horse (11%) presented with clinical signs consisting of a respiratory noise and nasal discharge. Four of the 11 (36%) Thoroughbred horses were found to have concurrent epiglottic entrapment. Surgical removal was successful in all cases. Eight of the 11 (73%) Thoroughbred horses in this study raced following SEC removal. The majority of SECs are identified during routine endoscopic examinations and are not associated with clinical signs. The prognosis following surgical removal of SECs is good and future performance does not appear to be affected.

The study was conducted in Northern Gondar to characterize the village chicken production system under urban condition. A cross sectional type of studies were conducted to collect data from November 2010 to April 2011 using questionnaire survey and a simple random sampling techniques, 100 households were included in the survey. The main production objectives of chicken were income generation, household consumption and replacement of the flock. And most of the activities in chicken rearing were carried out by women. The average flock size was 10.44 chickens with a range of 2-18 birds. Most of the birds rested at night in a separated confined chicken house. Chickens in the study area were getting their major feed resources through scavenging with little supplementary feed provision. The major causes of losses of chicken in the study area were disease (47%), predation (22%) and mismanagement (31%). According to respondents, the common signs of disease frequently occurred in their flock were watery and yellowish diarrhoea, closing of eyes, head hangs down, high level of morbidity, depression, droppings of wings, sneezing or coughing, nasal discharge, twisting of head and neck, loss of appetite and mass death. The average number of eggs laid by local hen was 11.53eggs/hen/clutch and the hatchability percentage observed in this study was 87.29 %, which ranged from 57.1%-100%. Sneezing and nasal discharge are a relatively common presentation in cats, often accompanied by involvement of the sinuses and the middle ear. Common associated clinical signs are noisy breathing and inappetence/weight loss. The best outcome for the patient occurs when a specific, treatable cause is identified; however, in a significant number of cases the nasal discharge is the chronic sequel to a respiratory virus infection. In such cases squamous metaplasia of the nasal mucosa means that complete resolution is unlikely, making good long-term management the goal. This article discusses the various causes of sneezing and chronic nasal discharge in the cat, and suggests diagnostic routes and therapeutic options.

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) contains many toxic compounds which include substances classified as aldehydes (e.g. formaldehyde) and inorganic substances such as cyanide ions. The information on the determination of these compounds in water is available, but the monitoring data on the level of these substances in human body fluids are still lacking. In this work the procedure for determining cyanide ions and formaldehyde in samples of human nasal discharge by simple spectrophotometric technique is presented.

Chronic sphenoid rhinosinusitis is a spectrum of inflammatory diseases in isolated sphenoid sinus which may persist over a period of 12 weeks. It is a different entity from other types of rhinosinusitis because clinical presentations include headache, visual loss or diplopia, and patients may or may not have nasal obstruction or nasal discharge. Nasal endoscopic examination is useful, and computed tomography is mandatory. The disease requires comprehensive knowledge and appropriate imaging technique for diagnosis. To treat patients with chronic sphenoid rhinosinusitis, surgical treatment with endoscopic transnasal sphenoidotomy is often required. As there are no recent updated reviews of chronic sphenoid rhinosinusitis, in this article, we review the anatomy of the sphenoid sinus and its clinical relationship with the clinical signs and symptoms of the disease, the imaging findings of each diagnosis and the comprehensive surgical techniques.

AIM: To determine inter-observer agreement for a clinical scoring system for the detection of bovine respiratory disease complex in calves, and the impact of classification of calves as sick or healthy based on different cut-off values. METHODS: Two third-year veterinary students (Observer 1 and 2) and one post-graduate student (Observer 3) received 4 hours of training on scoring dairy calves for signs of respiratory disease, including rectal temperature, cough, eye and nasal discharge, and ear position. Observers 1 and 2 scored 40 pre-weaning dairy calves 24 hours apart (80 observations) over three visits to a calf-rearing facility, and Observers 1, 2 and 3 scored 20 calves on one visit. Inter-observer agreement was assessed using percentage of agreement (PA) and Kappa statistics for individual clinical signs, comparing Observers 1 and 2. Agreement between the three observers for total clinical score was assessed using cut-off values of ≥4, ≥5 and ≥6 to indicate unhealthy calves. RESULTS: Inter-observer PA for rectal temperature was 0.68, for cough 0.78, for nasal discharge 0.62, for eye discharge 0.63, and for ear position 0.85. The emission of carbon monoxide CO from automobiles has caused hazard to human health. Human beings are faced with health challenges as they breathe air in their living environment. The breathing in of carbon monoxide has caused reduction of oxygen in take by man; because when carbon monoxide is breathed into the lungs, it sticks to the haemoglobin thereby preventing oxygen flow. This affects the transportation of oxygen by the blood which causes suffocation in man. The cluster of automobiles on roads and streets globally has posed health challenge. Hence this research is focused on finding solution to the effect of carbon monoxide CO on human health. To carry out this study the researcher used two automobiles that have different type of exhaust system. The researcher exposed four English rabbits to the two different exhaust systems in different rooms together with white fabrics in each of the rooms for one week to check for level of carbon deposits on the white fabrics after one week of the experiment. Observations were made in respect to body temperature, weight, nasal discharge, vomiting rate and feeding habits of the four rabbits used in the experiment. Findings were discussed based on observations as shown on records and recommendations were made to guide the researcher in making conclusion.

Numa primeira parte é apresentada a casuística acompanhada ao longo do estágio, com referência mais pormenorizada a alguns dos casos clínicos acompanhados nas diversas áreas de intervenção da clínica de equinos. Segue-se uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o corrimento nasal unilateral em equinos, com especial ênfase para as sinusites. Termina com o relato de quatro casos clínicos, desde o surgimento dos primeiros sinais clínicos até à sua resolução médica/ cirúrgica; ABSTRACT: This report was prepared in order to describe the activities developed during the integrated internship of the master's degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Evora. The first part describes the casuistics followed along the traineeship with more detailed reference to some of the clinical cases assisted in different areas of intervention of the equine clinics. The second part presents a literature review on the unilateral nasal discharge in horses with special emphasis on sinusitis. It ends with the description of four clinical cases since the appearance of the first clinical signs to their medical/ surgical resolution.

Indications for radiography of the nasal cavity and frontal sinuses include: nasal discharge, epistaxis, sneezing; head trauma; swelling, distortion, pain affecting maxillary or frontal regions; proptosis; and epiphora. This chapter examines standard and special views of radiography; normal anatomy; contrast studies; alternative imaging techniques and abnormal imaging findings.

In this retrospective study of 41 cats with chronic nasal disease diagnoses included nasal neoplasia (n = 19), idiopathic chronic rhinosinusitis (ICRS) (n = 12), nasopharyngeal polyps (n = 3), foreign bodies (n = 2), nasopharyngeal stenosis (n = 1) and nasal aspergillosis (n = 1). In 3 cats diagnosis could not be established despite thorough work-up. Gender, indoor or outdoor housing, quality or quantity of nasal discharge, bacteriological findings of nasal flushes, radiology and CT findings did not differ significantly between cats with neoplasia and cats with ICRS. Cats with neoplasia were older (3 - 15, median 11 years) and showed clinical signs for a shorter period of time (1 - 8, median 2 months) than cats with ICRS (age 1 - 13, median 7.5 years; signs: 1 - 36, median 5 months). In all cats with neoplasia a mass was detected rhinoscopically, while this was only seen in 30 % of cats with ICRS. The exact diagnosis has to be established by examination of biopsy samples. A combination of physical examination, imaging studies and rhinoscopy with cytological and histopathological examination of samples enhances the likelihood for a correct diagnosis.
