According to a statement made by the National Society of Oil Refining in July, the North African government is to invest US $1.2bn in the oil industry through 2009. The government wants to diversify the economy further and, in particular, hopes that the growing tourism sector could become an alternative source of hard currency. Increasing attention is being paid to possible security risks to the oil sector, in light of a recent statement by the country's main militant group, which threatened 'war' on foreign workers and firms, including oil workers.
