We present an analysis of 1- to 5-[[micro]meter], near-infrared broadband images of Comet P/Halley 1986 III covering a 104-km square region of the inner coma obtained on three consecutive nights in 1986 March during post-perihelion passage. In all images, the coma is extended in the sunward direction and appears distinctly non-spherical, similar to morphology in the 10-[[micro]meter] made by Hayward et al. (1987) 3.0 days later during the Giotto encounter. Marked variation in the coma's overall structure and brightness also was apparent, including the presence of a jet feature which we associate with a short-term outburst of material from the comet nucleus. The observed coma surface brightness dependence upon nucleocentric distance (r) at all wavelengths in both the comet dust tail and in the jet deviates from the dependence predicted by the 'steady state' model for comet nucleus ablation, with the radial decrease in surface brightness being slower than [r.sup.-1] on the jet side of the nucleus and faster that [r.sup.-1] on the tail side. The near-infrared colors of the coma are not constant as a function of nucleocentric distance, suggesting that the grain properties are not uniform across the coma. Based on an elementary dynamical analysis of the trajectories of dust particles ablated from the nucleus we argue that these observations may be consistent with the hypothesis that partcles emitted in jets fragments in the outflow on time scales of a few hours.

POLYETHYLENE glycol ,NUCLEIC acids ,ANTISENSE DNA ,RNA ,DNA ,METHYLCYTOSINE - Abstract
Artificial nucleic acids are widely used in various technologies, such as nucleic acid therapeutics and DNA nanotechnologies requiring excellent duplex‐forming abilities and enhanced nuclease resistance. 2′‐O,4′‐C‐Methylene‐bridged nucleic acid/locked nucleic acid (2′,4′‐BNA/LNA) with 1,3‐diaza‐2‐oxophenoxazine (BNAP (BH)) was previously reported. Herein, a novel BH analogue, 2′,4′‐BNA/LNA with 9‐(2‐aminoethoxy)‐1,3‐diaza‐2‐oxophenoxazine (G‐clamp), named BNAP‐AEO (BAEO), was designed. The BAEO nucleoside was successfully synthesized and incorporated into oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs). ODNs containing BAEO possessed up to 104‐, 152‐, and 11‐fold higher binding affinities for complementary (c) RNA than those of ODNs containing 2′‐deoxycytidine (C), 2′,4′‐BNA/LNA with 5‐methylcytosine (L), or 2′‐deoxyribonucleoside with G‐clamp (PAEO), respectively. Moreover, duplexes formed by ODN bearing BAEO with cDNA and cRNA were thermally stable, even under molecular crowding conditions induced by the addition of polyethylene glycol. Furthermore, ODN bearing BAEO was more resistant to 3′‐exonuclease than ODNs with phosphorothioate linkages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The relationship between dust polarization and extinction was determined for the cold dense starless molecular cloud core FeSt 1-457 based on the background star polarimetry of dichroic extinction at near-infrared wavelengths. Owing to the known (three-dimensional) magnetic field structure, the observed polarizations from the core were corrected by considering (a) the subtraction of the ambient polarization component, (b) the depolarization effect of inclined distorted magnetic fields, and (c) the magnetic inclination angle of the core. After these corrections, a linear relationship between polarization and extinction was obtained for the core in the range up to $A_V \approx 20$ mag. The initial polarization vs. extinction diagram changed dramatically after the corrections of (a) to (c), with the correlation coefficient being refined from 0.71 to 0.79. These corrections should affect the theoretical interpretation of the observational data. The slope of the finally obtained polarization--extinction relationship is $P_H / E_{H-K_s} = 11.00 \pm 0.72$ $\%$ ${\rm mag}^{-1}$, which is close to the statistically estimated upper limit of the interstellar polarization efficiency (Jones 1989). This consistency suggests that the upper limit of interstellar polarization efficiency might be determined by the observational viewing angle toward polarized astronomical objects., Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

- Abstract
We present the 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the IC5146 filamentary cloud taken using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) and its associated polarimeter (POL-2), mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the B-fields In STar forming Regions Observations (BISTRO). This work is aimed at revealing the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale ($\lesssim 1.0$ pc) hub-filament structure (HFS) located at the end of a parsec-scale filament. To investigate whether or not the observed polarization traces the magnetic field in the HFS, we analyze the dependence between the observed polarization fraction and total intensity using a Bayesian approach with the polarization fraction described by the Rice likelihood function, which can correctly describe the probability density function (PDF) of the observed polarization fraction for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. We find a power-law dependence between the polarization fraction and total intensity with an index of 0.56 in $A_V\sim$ 20--300 mag regions, suggesting that the dust grains in these dense regions can still be aligned with magnetic fields in the IC5146 regions. Our polarization maps reveal a curved magnetic field, possibly dragged by the contraction along the parsec-scale filament. We further obtain a magnetic field strength of 0.5$\pm$0.2 mG toward the central hub using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, corresponding to a mass-to-flux criticality of $\sim$ $1.3\pm0.4$ and an Alfv\'{e}nic Mach number of $<$0.6. These results suggest that gravity and magnetic field is currently of comparable importance in the HFS, and turbulence is less important., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

- Abstract
A very long term near-infrared variable star survey towards the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds was carried out using the 1.4m InfraRed Survey Facility at the South African Astronomical Observatory. This project was initiated in December 2000 in the LMC, and in July 2001 in the SMC. Since then an area of 3 square degrees along the bar in the LMC and an area of 1 square degree in the central part of the SMC have been repeatedly observed. This survey is ongoing, but results obtained with data taken until December 2017 are reported in this paper. Over more than 15 years we have observed the two survey areas more than one hundred times. This is the first survey that provides near-infrared time-series data with such a long time baseline and on such a large scale. This paper describes the observations in the SMC and publishes a point source photometric catalogue, a variable source catalogue, and time-series data., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

- Abstract
The relationship between submillimeter (submm) dust emission polarization and near-infrared (NIR) $H$-band polarization produced by dust dichroic extinction was studied for the cold starless dense core FeSt 1-457. The distribution of polarization angles ($90^{\circ}$-rotated for submm) and degrees were found to be very different between at submm and NIR wavelengths. The mean polarization angles for FeSt 1-457 at submm and NIR wavelengths are $132.1^{\circ} \pm 22.0^{\circ}$ and $2.7^{\circ} \pm 16.2^{\circ}$, respectively. The correlation between $P_H$ and $A_V$ was found to be linear from outermost regions to relatively dense line of sight of $A_V \approx 25$ mag, indicating that NIR polarization reflects overall polarization (magnetic field) structure of the core at least in this density range. The flat $P_H/A_V$ versus $A_V$ correlations were confirmed, and the polarization efficiency was found to be comparable to the observational upper limit (Jones 1989). On the other hand, as reported by Alves et al., submm polarization degrees show clear linearly decreasing trend against $A_V$ from $A_V \approx 20$ mag to the densest center ($A_V \approx 41$ mag), appearing as "polarization hole" structure. The power law index for the $P_{\rm submm}$ versus $A_V$ relationship was obtained to be $\approx -1$, indicating that the alignment for the submm sensitive dust is lost. These very different polarization distributions at submm and NIR wavelengths suggest that (1) there is different radiation environment at these wavelengths or (2) submm-sensitive dust is localized or the combination of them., Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

- Abstract
In the present study, the magnetic field scaling on density, $|B| \propto \rho^{\kappa}$, was revealed in a single starless core for the first time. The $\kappa$ index of $0.78 \pm 0.10$ was obtained toward the starless dense core FeSt 1-457 based on the analysis of the radial distribution of the polarization angle dispersion of background stars measured at the near-infrared wavelengths. The result prefers $\kappa = 2/3$ for the case of isotropic contraction, and the difference of the observed value from $\kappa = 1/2$ is 2.8 sigma. The distribution of the ratio of mass to magnetic flux was evaluated. FeSt 1-457 was found to be magnetically supercritical near the center ($\lambda \approx 2$), whereas nearly critical or slightly subcritical at the core boundary ($\lambda \approx 0.98$). Ambipolar-diffusion-regulated star formation models for the case of moderate magnetic field strength may explain the physical status of FeSt 1-457. The mass-to-flux ratio distribution for typical dense cores (critical Bonnor--Ebert sphere with central $\lambda=2$ and $\kappa=1/2$--$2/3$) was calculated and found to be magnetically critical/subcritical at the core edge, which indicates that typical dense cores are embedded in and evolve from magnetically critical/subcritical diffuse surrounding medium., Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

- Abstract
We present the results of dust emission polarization measurements of Ophiuchus-B (Oph-B) carried out using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) camera with its associated polarimeter (POL-2) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii. This work is part of the B-fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey initiated to understand the role of magnetic fields in star formation for nearby star-forming molecular clouds. We present a first look at the geometry and strength of magnetic fields in Oph-B. The field geometry is traced over $\sim$0.2 pc, with clear detection of both of the sub-clumps of Oph-B. The field pattern appears significantly disordered in sub-clump Oph-B1. The field geometry in Oph-B2 is more ordered, with a tendency to be along the major axis of the clump, parallel to the filamentary structure within which it lies. The degree of polarization decreases systematically towards the dense core material in the two sub-clumps. The field lines in the lower density material along the periphery are smoothly joined to the large scale magnetic fields probed by NIR polarization observations. We estimated a magnetic field strength of 630$\pm$410 $\mu$G in the Oph-B2 sub-clump using a Davis-Chandeasekhar-Fermi analysis. With this magnetic field strength, we find a mass-to-flux ratio $\lambda$= 1.6$\pm$1.1, which suggests that the Oph-B2 clump is slightly magnetically supercritical., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

- Abstract
We present 850 $\mu$m imaging polarimetry data of the $\rho$ Oph-A core taken with the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array-2 (SCUBA-2) and its polarimeter (POL-2), as part of our ongoing survey project, BISTRO (B-fields In STar forming RegiOns). The polarization vectors are used to identify the orientation of the magnetic field projected on the plane of the sky at a resolution of 0.01 pc. We identify 10 subregions with distinct polarization fractions and angles in the 0.2 pc $\rho$ Oph A core; some of them can be part of a coherent magnetic field structure in the $\rho$ Oph region. The results are consistent with previous observations of the brightest regions of $\rho$ Oph-A, where the degrees of polarization are at a level of a few percents, but our data reveal for the first time the magnetic field structures in the fainter regions surrounding the core where the degree of polarization is much higher ($> 5 \%$). A comparison with previous near-infrared polarimetric data shows that there are several magnetic field components which are consistent at near-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths. Using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we also derive magnetic field strengths in several sub-core regions, which range from approximately 0.2 to 5 mG. We also find a correlation between the magnetic field orientations projected on the sky with the core centroid velocity components., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Astrophysics - Abstract
Results of a near-IR survey of 0.55 sq deg toward the Galactic center are reported. Additional IR photometry of 50 objects found in this survey was made in order to investigate the nature of luminous stars in the central region of the Milky Way including all sources with K less than 7.6 and H-K not less than 1.4. In addition to candidates for normal M-type stars and long-period variables, four objects whose energy spectra peak at about 5 microns have been detected in a small region around (l, b) = (0.15, 0.0 deg), near the crossing of the 6-cm radio arc with the Galactic plane. These four might be young stellar objects near the Galactic center. It is suggested that the relative depth change in the silicate absorption is localized to a fairly small region around the Galactic center.

Gapmer‐type antisense oligonucleotides have not yet been approved for the treatment of central nervous system diseases, whereas steric‐blocking‐type antisense oligonucleotides have been well‐developed for clinical use. We here characterize a new type of double‐stranded oligonucleotides, overhanging‐duplex oligonucleotides, which are composed of the parent gapmer and its extended complementary RNA. By intracerebroventricular injection, overhanging oligonucleotides show greater silencing potency with more efficient delivery into mouse brains than the parent single‐stranded gapmer. Structure–activity relationship analyses reveal that the potency enhancement requires 13‐mer or more overhanging oligonucleotides with a phosphorothioate backbone. Overhanging oligonucleotides provide a new platform of therapeutic oligonucleotides for gene modulation in the central nervous system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
