The residual and migration levels of 28 primary aromatic amines (PAAs) in polyurethane and nylon toys were determined using LC-MS/MS, and the migration and residual amounts of PAAs and 15 colorants in textile toys were determined using LC-MS/MS and LC-TOF-MS according to the European Standard EN71. Among 34 polyurethane toy samples, 2,6-diaminotoluene and 2,4-diaminotoluene were detected in the same 12 samples at residual levels ranging from 2.1 to 19.7 and from 7.6 to 39.6 μg/g, respectively. Furthermore, 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (4,4'-MDA) and aniline were detected in 9 samples (from 0.2 to 8.7 μg/g), and one sample (0.4 μg/g), respectively. PAAs were not detected in the 8 samples of nylon toys. As for the migration test into water, only 4,4'-MDA migrated from 3 polyurethane toys at levels ranging from 0.4 to 2.5 μg/g. PAAs did not migrate from the 43 textile toys, but colorants such as Solvent Yellow 1 and Basic Red 9 were detected at the residual level of 0.02 μg/g. The residual levels of PAAs and colorants detected in this study were significantly lower than the limit values established by the European Union regulation.

The Japanese Food Sanitation Law sets a limit on the migration level of caprolactam for food-contacting nylon products. Here, we carried out an interlaboratory study in twenty laboratories to evaluate the performance of the official GC-FID test method and a GC-MS method as an alternative test method to the official method. Each laboratory quantified caprolactam in three test solutions in 20% ethanol as blind duplicates using GC-FID or GC-MS. The official method (GC-FID with absolute calibration) gave trueness, repeatability (RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDr) values of 96-97%, 3.3-5.4% and 4.0-6.7%, respectively. These values met the target criteria (trueness: 80-110%, RSDr: 10%, RSDr: 25%). The performance of the method was further improved by the introduction of heptalactam as an internal standard. As for GC-MS method, some values of the RSDr exceeded 10% when absolute calibration was used. However, when an internal standard was introduced, the trueness, RSDr and RSDr of GC-MS method were all acceptable at 94-96%, 2.0-4.4% and 7.0-9.4%, respectively. Therefore, GC-MS with an internal standard is available as an alternative test method to the official method.

An epicardial mesothelial cyst, which can be defined as a mesothelial cyst attached to the epicardium surrounding the heart and the great vessels inside the pericardial sac, is a rare condition. We herein report a case of epicardial cyst, which was attached to the ascending aorta. The patient was a 76-year-old male who underwent coronary artery bypass surgery, and the cyst was found incidentally. It was approximately 5 cm in diameter, and histological examination confirmed mesothelial cell origin. The ascending aorta has not previously been reported as the origin of an epicardial mesothelial cyst. This case gives new insight into the embryology of these cysts.

The expected future number of cardiovascular operations is estimated based on the predicted Japanese population and the rate of cardiovascular surgery performance calculated from 16845 cases treated by the Nagoya University group of hospitals between 2001 and 2013. The population of <20-year-old individuals has decreased since 1990, while that of 20-64-year-old individuals has also decreased since 2000. The population of 65-79-year-old individuals is expected to peak in 2020, with only the population of ≥80-year-old individuals expected to increase until 2040. The performance rate of cardiovascular surgery per 100,000 population is low in the 20-64-year-old group and increases to reach a peak in the elderly population of 70-74-year-old individuals in valvular heart disease (55.5), ischemic heart disease (54.5) and thoracic aortic aneurysm (31.9) and decreases to about half those values in the ≥80-year-old age group. The number of cardiovascular operations (all types) per 100,000 was 40.6 in 2002, 42.1 in 2006 and 46.6 in 2010. The total number of expected cardiovascular operations is increasing slightly and will reach a peak in 2020 with an estimated 61,506 operations. It then decreases gradually to reach 55966 in 2035, on the premise that the cardiovascular surgery performance rate does not change from the present time. In order to maintain and expand to meet the medical needs of cardiovascular surgery, it is crucial that an effort be made to increase the cardiovascular surgery performance rate, especially in octogenarian patients.

Background: Thoracic aortic operations still remain associated with substantial risks of death and neurologic injury. This study investigated the impact of surgical stroke on the early and late outcomes, focusing on the physical status and quality of life (QOL)., Methods: From 1986 to 2008, 500 patients (aged 63 ± 13 years) underwent open thoracic aortic repair for root and ascending (31%), arch (39%), extended arch (10%), and descending and thoracoabdominal (19%) aneurysms. Brain protection consisted of retrograde cerebral perfusion (52%), antegrade cerebral perfusion (29%), and simple deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (19%). Surgical stroke was defined as a neurologic deficit persisting more than 72 hours after the operation. QOL was assessed with the Short-Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire 5.9 ± 4.2 years after the operation., Results: Stroke occurred in 10.3% of patients. Hospital mortality was 21% in the stroke group and 2.7% in the nonstroke group (p < 0.001). At hospital discharge, 76% of survivors in the stroke group had permanent neurologic deficits (PNDs), with sustained tracheostomy in 39%, tube feeding in 46%, and gastrostomy in 14%, and 89% required transfer to other facilities. PND was an independent risk factor for late death (hazard ratio, 2.29; 95% confidence interval, 1.04 to 4.62; p = 0.041) in a multivariate analysis. The physical component of the QOL score was worse in the PND group (51% vs 100%; p = 0.039), whereas the mental component was similar in both groups (14% vs 14%)., Conclusions: Surgical stroke is associated with high hospital mortality and PNDs that decrease late survival and the physical component score of the QOL survey., (Copyright © 2015 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the influence of the characteristics of Japanese patients on the long-term outcomes after aortic valve replacement with either mechanical or biological prostheses by means of a microsimulation., Methods: A microsimulation model was used to simulate the lives of patients living in Japan and in the United States after aortic valve replacement. The background mortality data taken from the 21st complete life table of Japan and the bleeding hazard determined from a meta-analysis of long-term results in Japanese institutions were used to simulate Japanese patients. The life expectancy, event-free life expectancy, and lifetime risk of structural valve degeneration were calculated. A sensitivity analysis for various bleeding hazards was performed., Results: Regarding the event-free life expectancy, the age crossover points between the two valve types were 64-65 and 57-58 years for Japanese and American patients, respectively. Regarding the life expectancy, the age crossover points were 88-89 and 64-65 years, respectively, for Japanese and American patients. The lifetime risk of structural valve degeneration was higher in Japanese patients than in American patients. The sensitivity analysis showed that the age crossover points were sensitive to the hazard of bleeding complications., Conclusions: The long-term clinical outcomes after aortic valve replacement were simulated with a microsimulation model. The results indicated that the age crossover points in the advantages and disadvantages between mechanical valves and bioprostheses may be higher in Japanese patients than in American subjects.

An L-shaped incision combining an upper half mid-sternotomy and a left antero-lateral thoracotomy at the fourth intercostal space has been proposed by several authors for extensive aneurysms involving the aortic arch and the proximal thoracic descending aorta. This approach usually requires the division of the left internal thoracic artery at its mid position, thus making it unusable for coronary artery bypass. We herein report a modified surgical approach for simultaneous extensive arch and proximal thoracic descending aorta replacement and coronary artery bypass using the left internal thoracic artery combining a left antero-lateral thoracotomy at the sixth intercostal space and upper mid-sternotomy. The visualization of the whole diseased aorta down to the level below the hilum of the left lung was good, and the integrity of the left internal thoracic artery graft was preserved by early heparin administration before sternotomy., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflict of interest relevant to this publication.

Thoracic aortic surgery often causes massive bleeding due to coagulopathy. Hypofibrinogenemia is one of the major causative factors, but the utility of the intraoperative administration of fibrinogen concentrate has not yet been proven. The aim of this study was to estimate incidence of hypofibrinogenemia and to evaluate efficacy of using fibrinogen concentrate intraoperatively. The perioperative serum fibrinogen levels (SFL) had routinely been measured in consecutive 216 thoracic aortic surgeries performed from 2010 to 2012. Fibrinogen concentrate was principally used for hypofibrinogenemia (< 150 mg/dl of SFL) at cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) termination. The patients who received fibrinogen concentrate (FIB group) were compared with the patients who did not received (non Fib group). There were 147 patients (68%) in FIB group at a dose of 5.5±3.5 g. The SFL were dramatically decreased with values of 164±71 mg/dl at CPB termination, compared to the preoperative SFL of 352±131 mg/dl. In the FIB group, the intraoperative and postoperative SFLs were 139±53 and 262±75 (mg/dl), respectively. Thus the SFL was recovered quickly by the administration. 110 cases (51%) showed hypofibrinogenemia at the termination of CPB. The predictors of hypofibrinogenemia were preoperative SFL < 250 mg/dl, emergency surgery and thracoabdominal aortic surgery. Hypofibrinogenemia frequently was observed at the termination of CPB during thoracic aortic surgery. Administering intraoperative fibrinogen concentrate appears to be a useful option to treat coagulopathy.

Using six kinds of zinc solution in water and 4% acetic acid as samples, an interlaboratory study was performed to evaluate a zinc (Zn) test method for food-contact rubber products, based on the Japanese Food Sanitation Law. Eighteen laboratories participated, and quantified Zn in six test solutions as blind duplicates using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, induced coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry or induced coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Statistical analysis revealed that the trueness, repeatability (RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDr) were 97-103%, 0.7-4.9% and 1.7-8.9% by all measuring methods. The values of the performance parameter fulfilled the target value (trueness: 80-110%, RSDr: 10%, RSDr: 25%). The performance of these methods is sufficient for testing the adherence of samples to the specifications.

An interlaboratory study was performed to evaluate a migration test method of antimony (Sb) and germanium (Ge), based on the Japanese Food Sanitation Law for food- contact polyethylene terephthalate. Eighteen laboratories participated, and quantified Sb and Ge in three test solutions as blind duplicates using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) or induced coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Statistical analysis revealed that the trueness, repeatability and reproducibility were 98-107%, 1.7-7.5% and 2.0-18.8% by using GF-AAS and ICP-OES. The performance of these methods is sufficient for testing the specifications. The performance parameters of ICP-MS were 99-106%, 0.7-2.2% and 2.2-10.5%, respectively. ICP-MS is available as an alternative measuring method. However, in some laboratories, the quantitative values of Sb were higher than the addition levels. We found that Sb in working solutions is absorbed on glass vessels. Careful control of concentration in working solutions is required for Sb analysis.

A headspace GC/MS method was developed for identification and quantitation of residual volatile organic compounds in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) kitchen utensils. A sample was cut into small pieces, then N,N-dimethylacetamide was added in a headspace vial and sealed. After storing for more than 1 day at room temperature, the vial was incubated for 1 h at 90°C, and the headspace gas was analyzed by GC/MS. In 24 PMMA kitchen utensils, 16 volatile organic compounds including methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, toluene, 2-methyl-1-butene, 2-methyl-2-butene, 2-methylpropanal, methyl propionate, methyl isobutyrate, trans-3-heptene, heptane, cis-3-heptene, trans-2-heptene, cis-2-heptene, 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene, 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-pentene, and 1-octene were identified and quantitated. These 15 volatile compounds except methyl methacrylate were found for the first time in PMMA kitchen utensils. Recovery rates from spiked samples were 97.4-104.0% with CV values of 2.8-9.6%. Samples contained 190-7900 μg/g of methyl methacrylate, 26-810 μg/g of methyl acrylate, and 2-1300 μg/g of toluene; other compounds were at levels less than 100 μg/g. Methyl methacrylate was the main monomer of PMMA and methyl acrylate was a comonomer; toluene should be used as a solvent.

Residual levels of 14 volatile substances, including 1,3-butadiene, acrylonitrile, benzene, ethylbenzene, and styrene, in 30 kitchen utensils made from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin (ABS) and acrylonitrile-styrene resin (AS) such as slicers, picks, cups, and lunch boxes in Japan were simultaneously determined using headspace gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (HS-GC/MS). The maximum residual levels in the ABS and AS samples were found to be 2000 and 2800 μg/g of styrene, respectively. The residual levels of 1,3-butadiene ranged from 0.06 to 1.7 μg/g in ABS, and three of 15 ABS samples exceeded the regulatory limit for this compound as established by the European Union (EU). The residual levels of acrylonitrile ranged from 0.15 to 20 μg/g in ABS and from 19 to 180 μg/g in AS. The levels of this substance in seven ABS and six AS samples exceeded the limit set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Furthermore, the levels of acrylonitrile in three AS samples exceeded the voluntary standard established by Japanese industries. These results clearly indicate that the residual levels of some volatile compounds are still high in ABS and AS kitchen utensils and further observations are needed.

An analytical method for the identification and quantification of 10 different isocyanates and 11 different amines in polyurethane (PUR) foam and PUR-coated products was developed and optimized. Isocyanates were extracted and derivatized with di-n-butylamine, while amines were extracted with methanol. Quantification was subsequently performed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Using this methodology, residual levels of isocyanates and amines in commercial PUR products were quantified. Although the recoveries of certain isocyanates and amines were low, the main compounds used as monomers in the production of PUR products, and their decomposition species, were clearly identified at quantifiable levels. 2,4-and 2,6-toluenediisocyanate were detected in most PUR foam samples and a pastry bag in the range of 0.02-0.92 mg/kg, with their decomposition compounds, 2,4-and 2,6-toluenediamine, detected in all PUR foam samples in the range of 9.5-59 mg/kg. PUR-coated gloves are manufactured using 4,4'-methylenebisphenyl diisocyanate as the main raw material, and a large amount of this compound, in addition to 4,4'-methylenedianiline and dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diamine were found in these samples.

Based on the Japanese Food Sanitation Law, the performances of official and alternative material test methods for cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in food contact plastics were compared. Nineteen laboratories participated to an interlaboratory study, and quantified Cd and Pb in three PVC pellets. in the official method, a sample is digested with H2SO4, taken up in HCl, and evaporated to dryness on a water bath, then measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Statistical treatment revealed that the trueness, repeatability (RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDr) were 86-95%, 3.1-9.4% and 8.6-22.1%, respectively. The values of the performance parameters fulfilled the requirements , and the performances met the test specifications. The combination of evaporation to dryness on a hot plate and measurement by AAS or ICP-OES is applicable as an alternative method. However, the trueness and RSDr were inferior to those of the official method. The performance parameters obtained by using the microwave digestion method (MW method) to prepare test solution were better than those of the official method. Thus, the MW method is available as an alternative method. Induced coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is also available as an alternative method. However, it is necessary to ensure complete digestion of the sample.

Bisphenol A (BPA) concentrations were surveyed in 100 domestic and 60 imported canned foods purchased from the Japanese market in 2011-12. BPA was extracted from the canned foods, derivatised by ethylation and analysed using GC-MS. In the domestic canned foods, the maximum and average BPA concentrations were 30 and 3.4 ng g(-1), respectively, while in the imported canned foods they were 390 and 57 ng g(-1), respectively. The BPA level in the domestic canned foods was significantly lower than that in the imported canned foods. Based on these results, the intakes of BPA from the domestic and imported canned foods in Japan were estimated as 644 ng person(-1) day(-1). The Japanese BPA intake was the second lowest following New Zealand, although imported canned foods increased. It was sufficiently lower than the tolerable daily intake of EFSA and the USEPA. The drastic reduction of BPA in the domestic canned foods should be due to the 'BPA reduced cans' that Japanese can manufacturers had developed in the late 1990s and became widely used in Japan.

An interlaboratory study was performed to evaluate a migration test method of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), based on the Japanese Food Sanitation Law for glassware, ceramicware, enamelware and metal cans. Seventeen laboratories participated, and quantified Cd and Pb in eight test solutions as blind duplicates using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) or induced coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Statistical analysis revealed that the trueness, repeatability (RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDr) were 93-105%, 0.7-8.4% and 2.6-19.3% by using AAS, ICP-OES and ICP-MS (internal standard method). The performance of these methods is sufficient for testing specifications. However, some of the RSDr values exceeded 10% in GF-AAS, and careful control of accuracy is required.

Bioabsorbable poly-L-lactide (PLLA) sternal pins are applied to reinforce sternal closure during cardiac surgery. However, these pins lack osteoconductivity. A new bioabsorbable sternal pin with osteoconductivity, made of uncalcined hydroxyapatite and poly-L-lactide (u-HA-PLLA) has been developed. This study was conducted to compare the two types of sternal pins in terms of sternal stability and healing after median sternotomy. Between October 2006 and January 2012, 105 patients underwent aortic surgery for aortic aneurysms or dissection via median sternotomy and sternal closure with sternal pins. Among these patients, 75 were followed for 12 months using serial computed tomography (CT). PLLA sternal pins were used in 30 patients (group A) and u-HA-PLLA sternal pins were used in 45 patients (group B). The incidence rates of transverse sternal dehiscence, anteroposterior displacement and complete sternal fusion were evaluated using CT. The cross-sectional cortical bone density area (CBDA) of the sternum around the sternal pins was examined to evaluate the osteoconductivity of the sternal pins. There were no significant differences between groups A and B in the sternal dehiscence rate (6.7 vs 4.4 %), sternal displacement rate (6.7 vs 2.2 %) or 12-month sternal fusion rate (63.3 vs 73.3 %). The CBDA around the sternal pins significantly increased between discharge and 12 months after surgery in group B (P < 0.001) but not in group A. These results show that u-HA-PLLA sternal pins exhibit certain osteoconductivity; however, both PLLA and u-HA-PLLA sternal pins provide comparable clinical outcomes regarding sternal stability and healing.

This report describes spontaneous cytoplasmic vacuolation in the proximal renal tubules of a 7-week-old male ICR [Crlj:CD1(ICR)] mouse. The contents of vacuoles were positively stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Sudan black, and the membranes were positive on immunohistochemical staining for lysosomal-associated membrane protein-2 (LAMP-2), a marker of lysosomal membrane. Electron microscopy revealed electron-dense lamellar bodies in the proximal tubular epithelial cells. These histopathological features are similar to those in α-galactosidase A-deficient mice, in which globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), a glycosphingolipid, accumulates in lysosomes. When we performed immunohistochemical staining for Gb3, the contents of vacuoles were positively stained. From these results, spontaneous cytoplasmic vacuolation in the proximal renal tubules in the mouse was identified as lysosomal accumulation of Gb3.

The management of an extended aortic arch aneurysm still remains a clinical challenge. Open surgery can be invasive for the patients with comorbidities. Since thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) was introduced, hybrid therapy has been applied for the extended arch aneurysm. From 1997 to 2013, 379 patients have undergone aortic arch surgery. Of those, 241 patients of non-dissection aneurysm were studied. Open surgical repair with L-shaped thoracotomy was done in 28 patients, frozen elephant trunk( FET) in 30 patients, long elephant trunk( LET) with 2nd TEVAR in 21 patients, debranched TEVAR in 10 patients and standard arch grafting in 152 patients as a control group. The brain infarction rate was high in debranched TEVAR (40%) and L-shaped group (25%). The paraplegia rate was high in FET group( 23.3%). The respiratory failure rate was high in the L-shaped group and the LET group. In-hospital mortality was 0.0% in the L-shaped group, 6.7% in the FET group, 4.8% in the LET group, 20% in the debranched group and 0.7% in the control group. The debranched TEVAR group is our early experience, and the recent outcomes of this procedure have improved. The management of extended aortic arch aneurysm has changed with hybrid approach combined with TEVAR. Open repair is still the gold standard, but hybrid therapy is used for high-risk patients. Off-pump debranched TEVAR tends to be applied for extended arch aneurysm.

Objectives: To investigate the diagnostic value of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) in detecting thoracic aortic prosthetic graft infection., Methods: Nine patients with clinically suspected thoracic aortic graft infection underwent FDG-PET/CT scanning. In these patients, the diagnoses could not be confirmed using conventional modalities. The patients' clinical courses were retrospectively reviewed., Results: On the basis of surgical, microbiological and clinical follow-up findings, the aortic grafts were considered infected in 4 patients and not infected in 5. All 4 patients with graft infection (root: 2 cases, arch: 1 case and descending: 1 case) eventually underwent in situ re-replacement. Two of the 4 patients also had abdominal grafts; however, only the thoracic grafts were replaced because uptake was low around the abdominal grafts. The maximal standardized uptake value (SUVmax) in the perigraft area was higher in the infected group than in the non-infected group (11.4 ± 4.5 vs 6.9 ± 6.4), although the difference was not statistically significant. According to the receiver operating characteristic analysis, SUVmax >8 appeared to be the cut-off value in distinguishing the two groups (sensitivity: 1.0 and specificity: 0.8)., Conclusions: FDG-PET/CT is useful for confirming the presence of graft infection by detecting high uptake around grafts and excluding other causes of inflammation. An SUVmax value greater than 8 around a graft suggests the presence of graft infection. In addition, FDG-PET/CT can be used to clarify the precise extent of infection. This is especially useful if multiple separated prosthetic grafts have been implanted.

We presented a rare surgical case of recurrent multiple left atrial myxomas, who had a history of surgery for multiple left ventricular myxomas 28 years ago. The case was a 42-year-old female. She developed dyspnea, cough, and palpitation due to functional mitral valve obstruction by myxoma. There were a 30 mm large pedunculated tumor on the left atrial septum and 2 small tumors near the orifice of the right upper pulmonary vein. These tumors were excised with the left atrial endothelium and the defect was reconstructed with a bovine pericardium.

Objective: In 2007, we introduced a policy to plan to extubate all patients after a modified Fontan procedure in the operating room. Our objective was to review the feasibility, safety, and clinical outcomes of this approach., Methods: Patients who underwent a modified Fontan operation between May 2004 and May 2010 were reviewed., Results: Ninety-seven patients underwent a modified Fontan operation (mean age, 3.9 ± 2.2 years; mean weight, 15.1 ± 5.0 kg); 46 patients (47%) were extubated in the operating room (group A). Nineteen patients were extubated in the intensive care unit within 24 hours (group B), and 32 patients had delayed extubation (group C). The 3 groups were not significantly different with respect to preoperative characteristics. Twenty-four hours postoperatively, group A had a lower mean central venous pressure compared with patients in group B or C (13 vs 14 vs 17 mm Hg, respectively, P < .001); a higher base excess (0.4 vs -1.3 vs -3.4, P < .001); a lower fluid balance (234 vs 514 vs 730 mL, P < .001); and a lower inotrope score (4.6 vs 6.7 vs 10.8, P < .001). Group C had a longer median intensive care unit length of stay (2 vs 3 vs 6 nights, P = .01), kept their chest tubes longer (8 vs 9 vs 15 days, P = .001), and had a longer median hospital length of stay (9 vs 11 vs 21 days, P = .001)., Conclusions: Extubation in the operating room after a modified Fontan procedure seems feasible. This approach is associated with improved early postoperative hemodynamics, earlier time to chest tube removal, and shorter intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay., (Copyright © 2012 The American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Curcumin is a constituent phenol compound of turmeric, and has been used as a dietary spice and Indian medicine. Curcumin has been reported to inhibit the formation of amyloid β fibrils and aggregation. In this study, the binding activity of curcumin to various types of canine amyloid was examined. Tissue samples used were lesions of AA, AL, amyloid of canine amyloid-producing odontogenic tumor (Aapot), and senile cardiovascular amyloid (ScA). Curcumin stained all types of amyloid. The binding of curcumin to AA, ScA, and AL was lost by the KMnO(4) treatment, but Aapot maintained the binding. These findings indicate that curcumin binds several types of amyloid, while the binding sites of amyloid molecules might be different from that of Congo red.

A test method of methanol content in detergent using a headspace-GC method was established. A 1 g aliquot of test sample was mixed with 0.4 mg of 2-propanol and made up to 20 mL with water. Then, 5 mL of test solution was placed in a headspace vial. The vial was sealed and incubated for 30 min at 60°C, then the headspace gas was analyzed by GC-FID. The recovery from spiked 1 mg/g of methanol was 95.6-100.6%. The determination limit was 0.1 mg/g. Using this method, the methanol content in 14 kinds of detergents was quantified. Methanol was detected from two detergents at the levels of 0.13 and 0.27 mg/g.

Plasticizers in 101 samples of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) toys on the Japanese market were surveyed. No phthalates were detected in designated toys, though bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, diisononyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, diisodecyl phthalate and benzyl butyl phthalate were detected in more than half of other toys. 2,2,4-Tributyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutylate, o-acetyl tributyl citrate, adipates and diacetyl lauroyl glycerol, which are alternative plasticizers to phthalates, were detected. The results of structural analysis confirmed the presence of di(2-ethylhexyl)terephthalate, tributyl citrate, diisononyl 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylate and neopentyl glycol esters; these have not previonsly been reported in Japan. There appears to be a shift in plasticizers used for designated toys from phthalates to new plasticizers, and the number of different plasticizers is increasing.

The binding of curcumin to senile plaques (SPs) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) was examined in the aged brain of various animal species and a human patient with Alzheimer's disease (AD), together with its binding to neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Brain sections were immunostained with anti-amyloid β protein 1-42 (Aβ42) and anti-amyloid β protein 1-40 (Aβ40) antibodies. These sections were also stained with alkaline Congo red, periodic acid-methenamine silver (PAM), and curcumin (0.009% curcumin solution) with or without formic acid pretreatment. The sections from the AD brain were also immunostained for anti-paired helical filament-tau (PHF-tau), and were stained with Gallyas silver for NFTs. Some SPs in the AD, monkey, dog, bear, and amyloid precursor protein transgenic mouse (APP Tg-mouse) brains contained congophilic materials, and were intensely positive for curcumin. In addition, curcumin labeled some diffuse SPs negative for Congo red in the AD, monkey, bear, and APP Tg-mouse brains. In all animals, CAA was intensely positive for both Congo red and curcumin. The specific curcumin staining activity was lost by formic acid pretreatment. In the AD brain, NFTs positive for PHF-tau and Gallyas silver were moderately stained with curcumin. These findings indicate that curcumin specifically binds to the aggregated Aβ molecules in various animals, and further to phosphorylated tau protein, probably according to its conformational nature.

Senile plaques (SP) are characteristic histopathological manifestations of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but are also found in normal aging (NA). Recent studies have demonstrated that beta amyloid (Aβ) proteins that have been truncated at the N-terminal position 3 (AβpN3) are the predominant component of SP in AD, but not in NA. The present study revealed that AβpN3 was deposited in an age-dependent manner in canine brains. Moreover, AβpN3 was the main component of the SP that developed in very old dogs. The deposition of AβpN3 increased in accordance with the number of SP, but that of N-terminally intact Aβ (AβN1) did not. In addition, AβpN3 was also deposited in the SP of a Japanese macaque and an American black bear, but not in a feline brain. Focal microvascular cerebral amyloid angiopathy was also observed in the deep cortices and the white matter of the dogs and a woodpecker. Those were always composed of both AβpN3 and AβN1. In conclusion, though non-human animals do not develop full pathology of AD of the human type, AβpN3 is widely deposited in the brains of senescent vertebrates.

An analytical method has been developed for the detection of SiO(2) and other oxides in titanium dioxide and certain silicates used in food additives using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic emission spectrometry without hydrofluoric acid. SiO(2) and other oxides in titanium dioxide or certain silicates were resolved by alkali fusion with KOH and boric acid and then dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid as a test solution for ICP. The recovery of SiO(2) and Al(2)O(3) added at 0.1 and 1.0%, respectively, in TiO(2) was 88-104%; coefficient of variation was <4%. The limit of determination of SiO(2) and Al(2)O(3) was about 0.08%, and the accuracy of the ICP method was better than that of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) test method. The recovery of SiO(2) and other oxides in silicates was 95-107% with a coefficient of variation of <4%. Using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDX) with fundamental parameter determination, the content of SiO(2) and other oxide in titanium dioxide and silicate showed good agreement with the ICP results. ICP with alkali fusion proved suitable as a test method for SiO(2), Al(2)O(3) and other oxides in titanium dioxide and certain silicates, and EDX proves useful for screening such impurities in titanium dioxide and componential analysis of certain silicates.

We compared test methods for measurement of lead in metal utensils using flame-atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), graphite furnace-AAS (GFAA), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). The procedure for preparation of the test solution was improved. A 100 mg of sample was dissolved in 2.5 mL of HCl and HNO(3) (3 : 1) mixture (in the case of titanium sample, dissolved in HCl). Stock solution was prepared by diluting to 50 mL with water. The test solution was prepared by diluting with 0.1 mol/L HNO(3). The recoveries of lead added to various kinds of metal reagent at the level of 0.1% were 90-118%. When standard materials which contained lead at the level of 0.0098-0.11% were measured, the measured values were in close agreement with the standard values. These procedures are applicable to aluminum, iron, stainless steel, copper, tin and titanium products. The AAS method, GFAA method and ICP method were suitable as the lead test methods. Moreover, the XRF method was useful as a screening method or a simple determination method. The ICP method was used to determine the lead contents in 22 kinds of commercial metal utensils, and 0.011-0.040% of lead were detected in 6 samples.

A test method for 6 phthalates, bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, diisononyl phthalate, diisodecyl phthalate and di-n-octyl phthalate, in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was developed. GC/MS was used in the SIM mode for the separation and detection of phthalates. For preparation of the test solution, the extraction method with acetone-hexane mixture (3 : 7) and the dissolution method with tetrahydrofuran and ethanol were compared and it was confirmed that each method gave good recoveries. Dilution of the test solution was effective to reduce the influence of PVC. In a collaborative study with nine laboratories, the intra-laboratory variations showed good repeatability, but the measurements at some laboratories deviated widely. It appears that this method is unsuitable for the judgment of acceptability, but it may be suitable for the determination of phthalate content in PVC products.

This study evaluated the clinical advantage of a novel technique to reconstruct a true lumen with aortic wall tailoring for aortic repair (aortic tailoring) or the reimplantation of intercostal arteries (vascular tube) in a chronic type B aortic dissection. Thirty-three consecutive extended thoracoabdominal aortic repairs have been performed for chronic type B dissection since 2000. The novel strategy was applied in 17 cases since 2004 including eight cases of aortic repair (group A) and nine cases of a vascular tube (group B). The other 16 cases were graft interposition in five and no reimplantation in 11 for group C. There were no surgical deaths in either group A or B, and only one late death in group C. No patients sustained transient or permanent paraplegia in group A and B, while three cases of paraplegia occurred in group C (18.8%). All of the intercostal arteries were well preserved in group A and an average of 9.8 intercostal arteries for nine patients were reimplantated in group B. The present technique can optimally preserve the intercostal arteries maximally and showed an excellent surgical mortality and morbidity, especially with regard to the protection of the spinal cord.

Migration of 2 kinds of monomer and 21 kinds of primary aromatic amines (PAAs) from 21 kinds of nylon products such as turners, ladles and wrap film were determined. Samples were classified as regards materials by mean of pyrolysis-GC/MS. One sample was classified as nylon 6, 15 samples as nylon 66 and three samples as nylon 6/66 copolymers, while two samples were laminate of nylon 6 with polyethylene or polypropylene. All of the nylon 66 samples contained a small amount of ε-caprolactam (CPL), which is the nylon 6 monomer. Migration levels of monomers and PAAs at 60°C for 30 min into 20% ethanol were measured by LC/MS/MS. CPL was detected at the level of 0.015-38 µg/mL from all samples, excluding one wrap film sample, and 1,6-hexamethylenediamine was detected at the level of 0.002-0.013 µg/mL from all nylon 66 samples and one nylon 6/66 sample. In addition, 0.006-4.3 µg/mL of 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane from three samples, 0.032-0.23 µg/mL of aniline from four samples, 0.001 µg/mL of 4-chloroaniline from two samples, and 0.002 µg/mL of 2-toluidine and 0.066 mg/mL of 1-naphthylamine from one sample each were detected. The migration levels at 95 or 121°C were about 3 and 10 times the 60°C levels, respectively.

A technique using a direct analysis in real time (DART) ion source coupled with time of flight/mass spectrometry (TOF/MS) was developed to discriminate plasticizers and to screen phthalates in polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In DART-TOF/MS analysis of 40 plasticizers, the protonated molecular ion, [M+H](+), was detected for most plasticizers, and the molecular weight could be easily predicted. In the analysis of PVC sheets and toys, mass spectra of plasticizers were successfully detected, and accordingly, plasticizers in PVC were easily discriminated. PVC with a phthalates content in excess of 0.1% could be screened accurately according to the DART-TOF/MS ion intensity of phthalates corresponding to the limit of detection or a suitable criterion value. DART-TOF/MS analysis is a simple and rapid technique that is suitable for the discrimination of plasticizers and for screening of phthalates in PVC.

Background: Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can differentiate into various types of cell, and the extracellular matrix (ECM) is acknowledged to be important for the regulation of cell functions. In this study, we demonstrated the effects of ECMs on the differentiation of human bone marrow-derived MSCs into a smooth muscle cell (SMC) lineage., Methods: Human MSCs (hMSCs) were cultured on dishes coated with 3 types of ECM including laminin (LM), collagen type IV (Col-IV) and fibronectin for 7 days, and simultaneously cultured on a noncoated dish as a control. Cell numbers of these cultured hMSCs were counted, and their expression of SMC-specific genes and proteins was evaluated. hMSCs were then seeded on LM-coated biodegradable sheets and implanted into rat subcutaneous space. After 2 weeks of implantation, these tissues were evaluated., Results: The number of hMSCs was significantly increased by culture on Col-IV-coated dishes. The expression of SMC-specific genes and proteins (alpha-smooth muscle actin, ASMA; h1-calponin, CALP) in hMSC was significantly upregulated from culture on LM-coated dishes. LM-coated sheets showed a significantly increased expression of ASMA and CALP protein in vivo. Moreover, a fully differentiated marker (SM2) was expressed in the in vivo implanted hMSCs in the course of 2 weeks on the LM-coated sheet., Conclusion: These results suggest that the signal transduction of the cell-matrix interaction for the differentiation of hMSCs into SMCs was activated when cultured with LM. LM-coated materials may thus be useful for cardiovascular tissue engineering.

Consumption of potassium permanganate and total organic carbon (TOC) were investigated as indices of total organic matter migrated into water from plastic kitchen utensils, food packages and toys for children. The samples were soaked in water at 60 or 95 degrees C for 30 min for kitchen utensils and food packages, and at 40 degrees C for 30 min for toys and the eluates were examined, using the two indices. The quantitation limits were both 0.5 microg/mL. Among 97 kitchen utensils and food packages tested, consumption of potassium permanganate and TOC were 0.5-10.9 microg/mL and ND-18.9 microg/mL for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tea-pot spouts and nylon kitchen utensils, respectively. Among 32 toys tested, the levels were 0.8-45.5 microg/mL and 0.5-8.9 microg/mL from PVC toys and block toys made by ethylene vinyl acetate resin. The levels for other samples were very low. There were large discrepancies between consumption of potassium permanganate and TOC for some PVC products and nylon kitchen utensils. The cause may be a marked difference of the oxidation decomposition rate by potassium permanganate, depending on the kind of organic matter that migrated from the plastics.

A highly sensitive analytical method for 25 kinds of primary aromatic amines and azo-dyes in paper products was developed. Free amines and total amines of the samples were analyzed. The amount of each azo-dye was calculated from the amount of total amines by subtracting the amount of free amines. Amines and azo-dyes were migrated into water at 23 degrees C for 24 hours. Free amines were extracted into dichloromethane after alkalization with sodium hydroxide solution. Azo-dyes were reduced to amines with sodium dithionite, alkalized, and then extracted into dichloromethane as total amines. They were determined by GC/MS. The recoveries of 100 microg/kg amines spiked into migration solution were in the range of 69-122%, except for 4,4'-oxydianiline and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane which gave recovery rates of approximately 40%. The determination limits of amines were 4-20 microg/kg in paper. Amines and azo-dyes were surveyed in 17 kinds of base paper and 16 kinds of paper products for food contact use. Aniline was detected at levels of 4-20 microg/kg from most recycled papers, whereas the other amines were not detected in any sample.

The migration tests of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) from paint film on baby toys set out in the Japanese Food Sanitation Law (official standard) and International Standard 8124-3 (ISO) were compared. Vinyl chloride resin enamel and acrylic resin enamel containing 1,000 mg/kg Cd and Pb on a dried basis were painted on glass plates and then dried. According to the official standard, the paint films on the glass plates were soaked in water at 40 degrees C for 30 min and the solutions were analyzed by ICP-AES. Cd and Pb were below the limit of determinotion (<0.1 microg/mL) and were less than 1/5-1/10 of the official standard limits. When the solvent was changed to 4% acetic acid or 0.07 mol/L HCl, we found that 0.3-2.3 microg/mL Cd and Pb migrated from the acrylic resin enamel, but no migration was observed from the vinyl chloride resin enamel. Meanwhile, according to the ISO method, paint was scratched from the glass plates and the powder was soaked in 0.07 mol/L HCl at 37 degrees C for 1 hr either with shaking and without shaking. The migration of Cd and Pb reached 310 to 910 mg/kg, i.e., 3.5-12 times more than the migration limits. Cd migrated more extensively than Pb, and they both migrated more readily from the acrylic resin enamel than from the vinyl chloride enamel. In conclusion, the migration test of Cd and Pb from paint films on toys based on the ISO standards is stricter than that based on the Japanese Food Sanitation Low.

Objective: We developed a novel sustained drug-eluting device using tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber to prevent anastomotic stricture and evaluated the effects in a rat abdominal aortic anastomosis model., Methods: In vitro and in vivo tacrolimus release tests for tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber were performed to confirm its sustained release. To verify the prevention of anastomotic stricture, tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber was placed around the end-to-end anastomosis of abdominal aorta in rats. Five rats were allocated to the following 5 groups: (1) control without tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber, (2) 5 mg of nanofiber only (0 wt% of tacrolimus), (3) 5 mg of tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber containing 0.04 wt% of tacrolimus, (4) 5 mg of tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber containing 0.1 wt% of tacrolimus, and (5) 5 mg of tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber containing 1.0 wt% of tacrolimus. Morphometric and histologic analyses including immunohistochemistry were performed in each of the groups 2 weeks after the operation., Results: The tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber gradually released tacrolimus for at least 1 month in vitro and in vivo. The ratio of intimal area was significantly reduced in the 1.0 wt% tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber group compared with the other groups (0.26, 0.24, 0.25, 0.21, and 0.08 in control, 0 wt%, 0.04 wt%, 0.1 wt%, and 1.0 wt%, respectively, P < .05). The cells, which constitute intimal hyperplasia, were positive for smooth muscle actin and SMemb, and factor VIII revealed that endothelial cells covered the surface of the aortic lumen even in the 1.0 wt% tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber group in immunohistochemistry., Conclusion: Tacrolimus-eluting biodegradable nanofiber reduced neointimal hyperplasia and preserved endothelialization. This device may be useful in the prevention of anastomotic stricture.

Aortic regurgitation (AR) and, aortic root dilatation are serious problems occurring after arterial switch operation (ASO). We have experienced a case of 12-year-old boy with aortic root dilatation and AR after ASO. Consistent progression of AR and aortic root dilatation were observed during the follow-up period. The latest Z-score of Valsalva sinus was about 9. We performed the Bentall procedure instead of aortic valve-sparing operation because of the degenerative aortic valve and the excessive aortic root dilatation. The postoperative course was uneventful. Histopathological findings of the aortic wall showed degeneration of elastic fibers on both sides of the anastmosis.

A determination method for epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) in bottled foods was developed and used to survey bottled foods on the Japanese market. The amount of sample required was decreased to 20 g and the standard addition method was adopted for the quantification, because lipid in foods interrupted the hydrolysis of ESBO. The recoveries were 87.1 and 98.9% and the determination limit was 5.0 microg/g for a 20 g sample, be cause lipid in foods interupted the hydrolysis of ESBO. The recoveries using the internal standard method varied widely, because hydrolysis of the internal standard, cis-11,14-eicosadienoic acid ethyl ester, was affected more than that of ESBO by coexisting lipid in the sample. ESBO was not detected in any of the bottled baby food samples examined (14 samples), though it had been frequently detected in previous European surveys. This difference may be related to the low fat content and low fluidity of the bottled baby foods retailed in Japan. On the other hand, ESBO was detected at levels of 25.7-494.0 microg/g in liver paste, pasta sauce, Sungan in spicy oil, and spicy oil. These foods had higher fat content and higher fluidity. However, ESBO intake from these foods appears unlikely to exceed the TDI in the EU (1 mg/kg bw/day).

Epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) was surveyed in the 103 samples of cap sealing for bottled foods on the Japanese market. Most of the sealings were made of polyvinyl chloride, while a few were made of polyethylene or acrylic resin. All the sealings contained ESBO in the range of 0.006-42.4%. Sealings for baby food, jam, etc. contained higher levels of ESBO, though those for beverages contained lower levels. Sealings in lug caps and press-on twist caps contained higher levels of ESBO, though that in pilfer-proof caps contained lower levels. Some sealings in screw caps and lug caps also contained other plasticizers, for example, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate and diisononyl phthalate, and their ESBO contents were 1/10 of those in sealings containing only ESBO. In this survey, ESBO was the most common plasticizer in cap sealing resin for bottled foods on the Japanese market.

A determination method was developed for epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) and epoxidized linseed oil (ELO), which are used as plasticizers and/or stabilizers, in wrapping film and cap sealings. The ESBO method reported by Castle et al. was improved. Samples were extracted with acetone-hexane (3: 7), transmethylated under alkaline conditions, then derivatized to the 1,3-dioxolanes and analyzed by GC/MS. The recoveries of spiked ESBO and ELO were between 92.6% and 104.4%. The determination limits were 0.01 mg/g for ESBO and 0.02 mg/g for ELO in the wrapping film, and 0.04 mg/g and 0.08 mg/g in the cap sealing. ESBO and ELO were surveyed in 10 samples each of wrapping film and cap sealings currently available on the Japanese market. ESBO was found at 34.7-82.8 mg/g in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) wrapping films and at 5.47-399 mg/g in cap sealings. ELO was detected at 8.6-11.4 mg/g in polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) wrapping films, and at 46.4 mg/g in a PVC wrapping film.

Levels of eight harmful elements, i.e., antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium, were investigated in 45 baby toys and 10 paints, which were mainly made of polyvinyl chloride. All samples contained barium at levels of 0.3-3,700 mg/kg, several samples contained cadmium (0.2-26 mg/kg), chromium (0.5-280 mg/kg) and lead (1.5-1,300 mg/kg), and one sample contained antimony (5.3 mg/kg). They might have been used as colorants of the toy materials and paints. They were then evaluated using the migration test of ISO 8124-3, in which samples were ground up, and then soaked in 0.07 mol/L HCl at 37 degrees C for two hours. Barium, cadmium, chromium and lead migrated from some of the samples, but at levels lower than the migration limits required by ISO 8124-3. Compared with the Japanese official method, the ISO method resulted in higher migration, but there are significant differences in the migration limits, test method, and so on between them. Further investigation is needed in this area.

Food contact plastics and rubbers possibly contain many kinds of chemicals such as monomers, oligomers, additives, degradation products of polymers and additives, and impurities. Among them, bisphenol A, nonylphenol, benzylbutyl phthalate, styrene oligomers and hydroxylated benzophenones have been reported to possess estrogenic activities. In this study, other chemicals related to food contact plastics and rubbers, and their metabolites induced by the S9-mixture were tested for their estrogenic activities using the yeast two-hybrid assay. Among the 150 chemicals, 10 chemicals such as bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) methane, 4-cyclohexylphenol, 4-phenylphenol, 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol alkylphosphite, two type of styrenated phenol (including mono type), tris(nonylphenyl) phosphite, 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone and 2,4-diphenyl-4-methyl-1-pentene, their metabolites and the metabolites of 6 other chemicals, such as 2-(phenylmethyl) phenol, styrenated phenol (di and tri type), 1-(N-phenylamino)naphthalene, 4-tert-butylphenylsalicylate, nonylphenol ethoxylates and 2-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol, displayed estrogenic activities. All of them contained a phenol group in their chemical structures or formed one easily by hydrolysis or metabolism. However, most of the chemicals related to food contact plastics and rubbers, and their metabolites did not show any estrogenicity.

Formaldehyde (FA), acetaldehyde (AA) and oligomers in recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were analyzed by HPLC. All of the physically recycled PET contained detectable levels of FA, AA and oligomers, and the levels were almost the same as in used bottles. Most superclean-like and chemically recycled PET contained lower levels than new pellets. These compounds showed no decrease upon physical recycling, but showed a marked decrease upon superclean-like recycling. In PET sheets made using physically recycled PET, FA was decreased, though AA was increased by the sheeting process as same as new one. FA, AA and oligomers originated from PET resin and their levels in recycled products were almost equivalent to those in new products. It was concluded that there is no particular safety concern about their presence in recycled PET.

Metals in recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were analyzed by ICP-MS following microwave digestion with nitric acid. Physically and superclean-like recycled PET contained both Ge and Sb, and sometimes contained Co, P or Si. In contrast, the chemically recycled PET contained only Ge or Sb, and some samples contained Co. The recycled PETs did not contain Pb or Cd. Ge and Sb were catalysts of the polymerization, and the other metals also originated from the PET resin as additives. It was concluded that there is no safety concern about metals in recycled PET. It became clear that the presence of both Ge and Sb could identify products formed using physically or superclean-like recycled PET. According to this discrimination method, about half of the sheet molding products used recycled PET.

A 10-year-old girl suffered from chest discomfort during exercise. She experienced an acute myocardial infarction accompanied by an obstruction in an orifice to the left coronary artery. An emergency operation revealed that the aortic valve was quadricuspid, and a left-sided small cusp had adhered to the aortic wall resulting in an unusual sac with a tiny slit. Resection of the sac disclosed the ostium to left coronary artery. Blood toward the left coronary artery passed through the tiny slit. The mechanisms of obstruction in the coronary artery were uncertain. She recovered well after the aortic valve replacement with resection of the aortic cusps.

Ethanol extracts of lyophilized vegetables were tested for inhibition of human lanosterol synthase (hOSC) in order to find the compounds to suppress cholesterol biosynthesis. Of 130 samples tested, twelve samples showed significant inhibition. Among them, Colocasia esculenta (taro) showed the highest inhibition (55% inhibition at 300 microg/ml). Examination of activity variation among eight taro cultivars indicated that "Aichi-wase" and "Yatsugashira" had the most potent activity for hOSC inhibition. In order to identify the active constituent of taro, ethanol extracts of "Aichi-wase" were partitioned with hexane and aqueous methanol, and fractionated by silica gel column chromatography. Inhibitory activity was concentrated in two major active fractions. Further purification of these fractions by preparative HPLC gave three monogalactosyldiacylglycerols and five digalactosyldiacylglycerols as active compounds that showed 28 to 67% inhibitory activities at the concentration 300 microg/ml.

The residual volatiles in recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were analyzed using headspace/GC/MS. Recycled PET samples were made from PET bottles used for beverages, alcohol and soy sauce, and they were recycled in physical recycling plants, chemical recycling plants and superclean-like recycling trials. The physically recycled PET flakes contained small amounts of volatiles such as ethanol, limonene, 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane, acetone, octanal and nonanal. Most of them originated from foods packed in bottles, and only 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane was derived from polymer impurities. In contrast, the superclean-like or chemically recycled PET contained no detectable volatiles, like new PET pellets. The PET sheets shaped from physically recycled PET had no detectable volatiles. Not only the chemically and superclean-like recycled PET, but also the physically recycled PET contained no hazardous volatiles. It was concluded that there is no safety concern about volatiles in recycled PET, for the present use.
