Measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen effect have been carried out on the heavy fermion anti-ferromagnet CeRhIn5 at temperatures between 25 mK and 500 mK under pressure. We present some preliminary results of our measurements to track the evolution of the Fermi surface as the pressure induced superconducting transition is approached., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, submitted 23rd International Conference on Low Temperature Physics (LT-23), Aug. 2002

We present results from optical, X-ray and radio observations of two X-ray bright (L_X ~ 10^{45} erg/s) galaxy clusters. A1451 is at redshift z=0.1989 and has line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v = 1330 km/s as measured from 57 cluster galaxies. It has regular X-ray emission without signs of substructure, a Gaussian velocity distribution, lack of a cooling flow region and significant deviations from the observed scaling laws between luminosity, temperature and velocity dispersion, indicating a possible merging shock. There is only one spectroscopically confirmed cluster radio galaxy, which is close to the X-ray peak. 1RXS J131423.6-251521 has z=0.2474 and sigma_v = 1100 km/s from 37 galaxies. There are two distinct galaxy groups with a projected separation of \~700 kpc. The velocity histogram is bi-modal with a redshift-space separation of ~1700 km/s, and the X-ray emission is double peaked. Although there are no spectroscopically confirmed cluster radio galaxies, we have identified a plausible relic source candidate., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, some in colour; A&A accepted

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the first results from the COLA (Compact Objects in Low-power AGN) project which aims to determine the relationship between one facet of AGN activity, the compact radio core, with star formation in the circumnuclear region of the host galaxy. This will be accomplished by the comparison of the multi-wavelength properties of a sample of AGN with compact radio cores to those of a sample of AGN without compact cores and a matched sample of galaxies without AGN. In this paper we discuss the selection criteria for our galaxy samples and present the initial radio observations of the 107 Southern galaxies in our sample. Low-resolution ATCA observations at 4.8, 2.5 and 1.4 GHz and high resolution, single baseline snapshots at 2.3 GHz with the Australian LBA are presented. We find that for the majority of the galaxies in our sample, the radio luminosity is correlated with the FIR luminosity. Compact radio cores are detected in 9 galaxies. The majority (8/9) of these galaxies exhibit a significant radio excess and 50% (7/14) of the galaxies which lie above the radio-FIR correlation by more than 1 sigma have compact radio cores. The emission from the cores is too weak to account for this radio excess and there is no evidence that the radio luminosity of the compact cores is correlated with the FIR galaxy luminosity. The galaxies with compact cores tend to be classified optically as AGN, with two thirds (6/9) exhibiting Seyfert-like optical emission line ratios, and the remaining galaxies classified either as composite objects (2/9) or starburst (1/9). Measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in CexLa1-xRhIn5 reveal that the Ce 4f electrons remain localized for all x, with the mass enhancement and progressive loss of one spin from the de Haas-van Alphen signal resulting from spin fluctuation effects. This behavior may be typical of antiferromagnetic heavy fermion compounds, inspite of the fact that the 4f electron localization in CeRhIn5 is driven, in part, by a spin-density wave instability., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRB

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present near-infrared spectra with resolutions of lambda/dlambda~1200 in the emission lines of Pa-beta, [FeII] (1.2567um), Br-gamma, and H2 v=1-0S(1) of the nuclei and circumnuclear regions of the four Seyfert 2 galaxies Mk 1066, NGC 2110, NGC 4388, and Mk 3. All of these galaxies show strong near-infrared line emission that is detected at radii several times the spatial resolution, corresponding to projected physical scales of 0.07 to 0.7 kpc. Velocity gradients are detected in these nuclei, as are spatial variations in line profiles and flux ratios. We compare the spatial and velocity distribution of the line emission to previously observed optical line and radio emission. The evidence indicates that the [FeII] emission is associated with the Seyfert activity in the galaxies. Our data are consistent with X-ray heating being responsible for most of the [FeII] emission, although differences in [FeII] and Pa-beta line profiles associated with radio emission suggests that the [FeII] emission is enhanced by fast shocks associated with radio outflows. The H2 emission is not as strongly associated with outflows or ionization cones as is the emission in other lines, but rather appears to be primarily associated with the disk of the galaxy., Comment: 35 pages, 24 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons ,Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
In the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 (Tc=2.3K) the critical field is large, anisotropic and displays hysteresis. The magnitude of the critical-field anisotropy in the a-c plane can be as large as 70 kOe and depends on orientation. Critical field measurements in the (110) plane suggest 2D superconductivity, whereas conventional effective mass anisotropy is observed in the (100) plane. Two distinct field-induced magnetic phases are observed: Ha appears deep in the superconducting phase, while Hb intersects Hc2 at T=1.4 K and extends well above Tc. These observations suggest the possible realization of a direct transition from ferromagnetism to Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconductivity in CeCoIn5., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Condensed Matter - Abstract
Recently it has been discovered that weak ferromagnetism of a dilute 3D electron gas develops on the energy scale of the Fermi temperature in some of the hexaborides; that is, the Curie temperature approximately equals the Fermi temperature. We report the results of de Haas-van Alphen experiments on two concentrations of La-doped CaB6 as well as Ca-deficient Ca1-dB6 and Sr-deficient Sr1-dB6. The results show that a Fermi surface exists in each case and that there are significant electron-electron interactions in the low density electron gas., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PRL

Measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen effect in the normal state of the heavy Fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 have been carried out using a torque cantilever at temperatures ranging from 20 to 500 mK and in fields up to 18 tesla. Angular dependent measurements of the extremal Fermi surface areas reveal a more extreme two dimensional sheet than is found in either CeRhIn5 or CeIrIn5. The effective masses of the measured frequencies range from 9 to 20 m*/m0., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PRB Rapids

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The de Haas - van Alphen effect and energy band calculations are used to study angular dependent extremal areas and effective masses of the Fermi surface of the highly correlated antiferromagnetic material CeRhIn$_5$. The agreement between experiment and theory is reasonable for the areas measured with the field applied along the (100) axis of the tetragonal structure, but disagree in size for the areas observed for the field applied along the (001) axis where the antiferromagnetic spin alignment is occurring. Detailed comparisons between experiment and theory are given., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, 16 references

The results of de-Haas-van-Alphen (dHvA) measurements on Cd doped CeCoIn5 in the high magnetic field paramagnetic phase are reported. The replacement of trivalent In by divalent Cd is known to induce an antiferromagnetic order coexisting with superconductivity in this heavy fermion superconductor. We find a small but systematic change in the dHvA frequencies with Cd doping, reflecting the chemical potential shift due to the removal of conduction electrons. The frequencies and effective masses are close to those found in the undoped compound. We observe no abrupt change in the electron Fermi surface (FS) volume in the high field paramagnetic phase for x > x c corresponding to the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at zero magnetic field in CeCo(In1xCdx)5. Our results show that no significant change of the Fermi surface volume occurs to cause the AFM onset inside the SC state in CeCoIn5 with Cd doping. Only slight changes causing the Band 15 electron FS to be more cylindrical are observed making nesting more likely. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

ESCHERICHIA coli ,DRINKING water ,WETLANDS ,WATER harvesting ,DRINKING water quality - Abstract
Cambodia has made progress towards addressing Sustainable Development Goal 6.1. "By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all", but challenges remain in fully realizing this target. We begin this paper by reviewing current country-wide access to safe and affordable water and subsequently report on the results of water sampling done for E. coli in a peri-urban area north of Phnom Penh that was conducted between 2018 and 2020. The sampling examined E. coli levels in source waters, including rivers, ponds, a large lake/wetland, wells, rainwater harvesting systems, piped water, and bottled water. Sampling from household storage containers and in-home drinking cups also was done to assess the effects that handling practices might have on exposure to E. coli. We show that country-wide, as well as in the peri-urban study area, there has been increased access to piped water. Piped water and commercially-available bottled water (0.5-1.5 L PET bottles) had the lowest E. coli levels in our study area, although such bottled water is not an affordable alternative for many peri-urban families. Surface pond water and the Tonle Sap River contained the highest E. coli levels and would pose the greatest risk associated with direct consumption. Handling practices may impact drinking water quality, as a significant difference (p=0.2) was found in E. coli levels between samples taken from commerciallyavailable 0.5-1.5 L PET bottles and from household cups into which the bottled water was poured. There also was a significant difference (p<0.05) in E. coli levels between piped water sampled directly from the tap and piped water stored in bulk household containers. T The geometric mean concentration of E. coli in large, covered, traditional outdoor storage jars used for rainwater harvesting was nearly 10 times lower than the same type of jars that were not covered, although due to the small sample size and variability in the data, the difference was not significant (p=0.5). Despite the increasing availability of piped water service in the study area, we found a diversity of water source practices, including use of rainwater harvesting, surface water, 20 L bottled water, and wells. These source waters can be safe, but must be routinely monitored. The study illustrates the advantages of field-based testing for effective screening of E. coli in peri-urban areas. A primary goal of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is to measure the $\mathcal{O}(10)$ MeV neutrinos produced by a Galactic core-collapse supernova if one should occur during the lifetime of the experiment. The liquid-argon-based detectors planned for DUNE are expected to be uniquely sensitive to the $\nu_e$ component of the supernova flux, enabling a wide variety of physics and astrophysics measurements. A key requirement for a correct interpretation of these measurements is a good understanding of the energy-dependent total cross section $\sigma(E_\nu)$ for charged-current $\nu_e$ absorption on argon. In the context of a simulated extraction of supernova $\nu_e$ spectral parameters from a toy analysis, we investigate the impact of $\sigma(E_\nu)$ modeling uncertainties on DUNE's supernova neutrino physics sensitivity for the first time. We find that the currently large theoretical uncertainties on $\sigma(E_\nu)$ must be substantially reduced before the $\nu_e$ flux parameters can be extracted reliably: in the absence of external constraints, a measurement of the integrated neutrino luminosity with less than 10\% bias with DUNE requires $\sigma(E_\nu)$ to be known to about 5%. The neutrino spectral shape parameters can be known to better than 10% for a 20% uncertainty on the cross-section scale, although they will be sensitive to uncertainties on the shape of $\sigma(E_\nu)$. A direct measurement of low-energy $\nu_e$-argon scattering would be invaluable for improving the theoretical precision to the needed level., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures

- Abstract
Strong circularly polarized excitation opens up the possibility to generate and control effective magnetic fields in solid state systems, e.g., via the optical inverse Faraday effect or the phonon inverse Faraday effect. While these effects rely on material properties that can be tailored only to a limited degree, plasmonic resonances can be fully controlled by choosing proper dimensions and carrier concentrations. Plasmon resonances provide new degrees of freedom that can be used to tune or enhance the light-induced magnetic field in engineered metamaterials. Here we employ graphene disks to demonstrate light-induced transient magnetic fields from a plasmonic circular current with extremely high efficiency. The effective magnetic field at the plasmon resonance frequency of the graphene disks (3.5 THz) is evidenced by a strong (~1°) ultrafast Faraday rotation (~ 20 ps). In accordance with reference measurements and simulations, we estimated the strength of the induced magnetic field to be on the order of 0.7 T under a moderate pump fluence of about 440 nJ cm-2.

- Abstract
PURPOSE: The POPPY II cohort is an Australian state-based cohort linking data for a population of individuals prescribed opioid medicines, constructed to allow a robust examination of the long-term patterns and outcomes of prescription opioid use. PARTICIPANTS: The cohort includes 3 569 433 adult New South Wales residents who initiated a subsidised prescription opioid medicine between 2003 and 2018, identified through pharmacy dispensing data (Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) and linked to 10 national and state datasets and registries including rich sociodemographic and medical services data. FINDINGS TO DATE: Of the 3.57 million individuals included in the cohort, 52.7% were female and 1 in 4 people were aged ≥65 years at the time of cohort entry. Approximately 6% had evidence of cancer in the year prior to cohort entry. In the 3 months prior to cohort entry, 26.9% used a non-opioid analgesic and 20.5% used a psychotropic medicine. Overall, 1 in 5 individuals were initiated on a strong opioid (20.9%). The most commonly initiated opioid was paracetamol/codeine (61.3%), followed by oxycodone (16.3%). FUTURE PLANS: The POPPY II cohort will be updated periodically, both extending the follow-up duration of the existing cohort, and including new individuals initiating opioids. The POPPY II cohort will allow a range of aspects of opioid utilisation to be studied, including long-term trajectories of opioid use, development of a data-informed method to assess time-varying opioid exposure, and a range of outcomes including mortality, transition to opioid dependence, suicide and falls. The duration of the study period will allow examination of population-level impacts of changes to opioid monitoring and access, while the size of the cohort will also allow examination of important subpopulations such as people with cancer, musculoskeletal conditions or opioid use disorder.

Background Simulation-based medical education (SBME) is emerging as a key method of medical education, particularly in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of a simulation development competition (SimStars) run by the National Doctors Training and Planning Unit and the South–South West Hospital Group, we brought together an inter-disciplinary team to develop a simulation scenario on hip fracture. Methods Our development team consisted of members of the Geriatric Medicine and Orthopaedic Departments. We developed a scenario that can be adapted to suit the needs of learners in orthopaedics, medicine, or nursing. We ran the simulation on a medical ward with one candidate and four facilitators from the Geriatric Medicine Department. The candidate (medical SHO) was presented with a patient (facilitator one), who had sustained a hip fracture following a fall. The candidate was directed to elicit a falls and bone health history, screen for delirium, and suggest further investigations and management. Subsequently, feedback was sought from all participants. Results The simulation took twenty minutes, debriefing took fifteen minutes. All considered, the simulation an enjoyable and feasible method for teaching and learning, and a novel way to promote team-building. The candidate felt competent in some areas, reporting that the scenario provided positive reinforcement. She reported feeling supported in identifying areas for further learning. The facilitators also considered this method a useful way to highlight a candidate’s learning needs and direct further teaching. The candidate requested further SBME-based sessions. Conclusion This SBME session in Ortho-Geriatrics was well-received by the candidate and facilitators. All participants enjoyed teaching and learning through this medium. Areas of high competency were reinforced and areas for future learning were identified. Further SBME was requested across more topics and for simulation training to be brought in as part of formal training.

Background The complexity of oesophageal surgery and the significant risk of morbidity necessitates that oesophagectomy is predominantly performed by a consultant surgeon, or a senior trainee under their supervision. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of trainee involvement in oesophagectomy on postoperative outcomes in an international multicentre setting. Methods Data from the multicentre Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Study Group (OGAA) cohort study were analysed, which comprised prospectively collected data from patients undergoing oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer between April 2018 and December 2018. Procedures were grouped by the level of trainee involvement, and univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to compare patient outcomes across groups. Results Of 2232 oesophagectomies from 137 centres in 41 countries, trainees were involved in 29.1 per cent of them (n = 650), performing only the abdominal phase in 230, only the chest and/or neck phases in 130, and all phases in 315 procedures. For procedures with a chest anastomosis, those with trainee involvement had similar 90-day mortality, complication and reoperation rates to consultant-performed oesophagectomies (P = 0.451, P = 0.318, and P = 0.382, respectively), while anastomotic leak rates were significantly lower in the trainee groups (P = 0.030). Procedures with a neck anastomosis had equivalent complication, anastomotic leak, and reoperation rates (P = 0.150, P = 0.430, and P = 0.632, respectively) in trainee-involved versus consultant-performed oesophagectomies, with significantly lower 90-day mortality in the trainee groups (P = 0.005). Conclusion Trainee involvement was not found to be associated with significantly inferior postoperative outcomes for selected patients undergoing oesophagectomy. The results support continued supervised trainee involvement in oesophageal cancer surgery., The aim of this study was to determine the impact of trainee involvement in oesophagectomy on perioperative outcomes in the international multicentre Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Audit (OGAA). Analysis of 2232 oesophagectomies has shown that trainee involvement did not negatively impact perioperative outcomes.
