155. The Use of Short, Supplemental Content Videos in the Ad/PR Classroom

Abstract

The objective of the research reported in this article was to evaluate the usefulness of supplemental videos in the advertising and public relations (PR) classroom, featuring luminaries in these same fields. Students in an introductory course in advertising and PR were given an assignment based on videos from an online library of short videos. Through a survey, students shared their attitudes and open-ended opinions toward the assignment and the videos. The findings suggest that having an assignment that incorporated videos was a useful addition to stimulate students' understanding of course materials. The videos were regarded positively along a number of important dimensions and motivated students to learn more about the advertising industry. This paper also includes five suggestions for incorporating the videos in an instructional setting.

166. An automated syringe-based PoC RT-LAMP LFB platform for infectious disease detection from saliva.

Abstract

Decentralized Point-of-Care (PoC) diagnostics hold momentous potential for rapid and accessible viral infection disease detection. Presented is a unique design application of an easy-to-use (plug-and-play) platform for viral detection. The platform leverages a simplified multiplex Reverse-Transcription Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (RT-LAMP) Lateral Flow Biosensor (LFB) assay with a lyophilized master mix, eliminating the need for RNA isolation or special reporting equipment. A user-friendly Saliva Measuring Tube (SMT) ensures accurate saliva volume self-collection, and a Syringe-based PoC (SPoC) platform automates sample treatment, reagent mixing, and temperature control using readily available components and consumables. The platform's performance was evaluated by multiplexed detection of the SARS-CoV-2 N2 target gene and human ACTB gene from saliva samples. The SPoC platform achieved a detection limit of spiked 500 copies/mL for SARS-CoV-2 and consistent internal control readout. Abstract

The epsilon‐near‐zero (ENZ) frequency regime of transparent conducting oxide materials is known to yield large enhancements in their optical nonlinearity and electro‐optic response. Here, Faraday rotation is investigated in Gd and In‐doped CdO films and it is found that the Verdet constant peaks at values >3 105 deg T−1 m−1 near the ENZ frequency, which is tunable in the wavelength range 2 < λ< 10 µm by varying the doping concentration. These results are among the highest reported to date in the mid‐infrared spectral range and are in good agreement with the Drude model, which confirms that the magneto‐optic response of doped CdO derives from its free carriers. The combination of a tunable Verdet constant, low optical loss compared to other plasmonic materials, and the ability to deposit CdO on Si with no loss in performance make this material a promising platform for integrated magneto‐optic and magnetoplasmonic devices that operate across the mid‐infrared. Abstract

Justice services have begun to integrate the use of mobile applications into treatment, support, and rehabilitative programs for forensic clients. One such application that been adopted to support forensic clients is "eRecovery": a smartphone application that provides clients recovering from a substance addiction with support for managing relapse. In this article, we report on evaluation findings from a trial of eRecovery in an Australian Community Justice Centre, and reflect on several issues relating to fostering and sustaining client engagement with similar applications within forensic and justice settings. We propose the Service Design Engagement Model to organize, visualize, and describe the stages and factors important to adoption, appropriation, and on-going routine use of the software by forensic clients. The model recognizes the role of contextual and environmental factors in supporting users through the early stages of engagement, and the importance of user agency in longer-term engagement with therapeutic apps.
