Maine Harvest for Hunger (MHH) involves Master Gardeners in food security through participation in gleaning and gardening projects that benefit food pantries. A statewide survey (Murphy, 2011a) indicates many food pantries face increased demand but are unable to distribute all of the donated produce. The MHH program in Oxford County is designed to provide vegetables and nutrition education directly to people with limited access to fresh produce. Participant survey results show this method is successful. Over 90% of respondents indicated their diets and knowledge of nutrition have improved somewhat to greatly and over 70% have made significant behavior changes.

he psychosocial impact of acute cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, including cardiac and stroke events, is gaining increasing recognition, with recommendations regarding an integrated cardiovascular approach coming from organizations such as the European Society of Cardiology Council on Stroke. This study aims to document the similarities and differences between heart disease and stroke in the prevalence, predictors and consequences of, and treatments for, anxiety and depression. This scoping review provides an overview of the evidence of similarity and difference in the mental health impacts of cardiac events and strokes. It found that research into postevent anxiety and depression is generally more advanced in the cardiac area than in the stroke area, with research related to poststroke anxiety prevalence, predictors, and treatment being particularly sparse. Despite these limitations, the review reveals enough similarities in the psychosocial impacts of cardiac and stroke events to warrant investigation of the potential for integrated psychosocial services for CVD patients, paying particular attention to collaborative care models of intervention. Both Nette Londo and Carolyn J. B. Melchert took part in "Ah neen dush" ("Why?" in Ojibwe), a three-year professional development program for Head Start teachers on the White Earth reservation. The program, a collaboration between the White Earth Head Start program and the University of Minnesota, was funded by the Office of Head Start to mentor and support teachers as they developed inquiry-based science and mathematics activities that incorporated Ojibwe language and culture. In this article the authors present the advantages of teaching a culturally based curriculum, and they describe the format they used to develop culturally based inquiry units. They also share two sample units, Londo's ice fishing unit and Melchert's animal tracks unit, to illustrate the types of activities that can be included in a culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate science investigation. Since publication use of the WHOQOL-Bref has rapidly risen. However, as yet no population norms have been published as a reference point against which researchers can interpret their findings. This study provides preliminary population norms for this purpose. Randomly sampled community residents from two studies were pooled and used to examine the properties of the WHOQOL-Bref by age group, gender and health status. The results showed that general norms for the WHOQOL-Bref domains were 73.5 (SD=18.1) for the Physical health domain, 70.6 (14.0) for Psychological wellbeing, 71.5 (18.2) for Social relationships and 75.1 (13.0) for the Environment domain. In general scores declined slightly by age group. For females scores were stable across the lifespan with an accelerated decline after the age of 60 years. Males exhibited a more consistent and even decline across the lifespan. There were significant differences in WHOQOL-Bref scores when reported by health status, with those in poor health obtaining scores that were up to 50% lower than those in excellent health. Effect sizes between different health status levels are reported. These preliminary norms and effect sizes may be used as reference points for interpreting WHOQOL-Bref scores. They provide additional information to the numerous national studies already reporting on the validity of the WHOQOL-Bref.

Fibrosis underlies the loss of renal function in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and in kidney transplant recipients with chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN). Here, we studied the effect of an intronic SNP in SHROOM3, which has previously been linked to CKD, on the development of CAN in a prospective cohort of renal allograft recipients. The presence of the rs17319721 allele at the SHROOM3 locus in the donor correlated with increased SHROOM3 expression in the allograft. In vitro, we determined that the sequence containing the risk allele at rs17319721 is a transcription factor 7-like 2-dependent (TCF7L2-dependent) enhancer element that functions to increase SHROOM3 transcription. In renal tubular cells, TGF-β1 administration upregulated SHROOM3 expression in a β-catenin/TCF7L2-mediated manner, while SHROOM3 in turn facilitated canonical TGF-β1 signaling and increased a1 collagen (COL1A1) expression. Inducible and tubular cell-specific knockdown of Shroom3 markedly abrogated interstitial fibrosis in mice with unilateral ureteric obstruction. Moreover, SHROOM3 expression in allografts at 3 months after transplant and the presence of the SHROOM3 risk allele in the donor correlated with increased allograft fibrosis and with reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate at 12 months after transplant.
