Abstract

Soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission has been performed for metallic V2O3. By combining a microfocus beam (40 µm × 65 µm) and micro-positioning techniques with a long-working-distance microscope, it has been possible to observe band dispersions from tiny cleavage surfaces with a typical size of several tens of µm. The photoemission spectra show a clear position dependence, reflecting the morphology of the cleaved sample surface. By selecting high-quality flat regions on the sample surface, it has been possible to perform band mapping using both photon-energy and polar-angle dependences, opening the door to three-dimensional angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for typical three-dimensional correlated materials where large cleavage planes are rarely obtained. type:text, We have investigated the magnetic electronic structures of PtMnSb, Ni2MnSb, Ni2MnSb,MnSb, MnAlGe, and Mn2Sb by soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements in the Mn 2p core absorption region. Different degrees of the electron itinerancy of the Mn 3d states are discussed. The large orbital angular momentum of the Mn 3d electrons is revealed for MnSb by the MCD spectrum. In addition, the XAS and MCD spectra are measured in the Sb 3d, Ni 2p, and Pt 4f core excitation regions. An induced magnetic moment of Sb valence orbitals with the spin antiparallel to that of Mn is clearly indicated for NiMnSb and Mn2Sb.

非常に希薄にCr及びRuをドープしたNd$_{1/2}$A$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$ (NAMO) (A=Ca,Sr)マンガナイトの電子状態をMn及びCrの2p$\rightarrow$3d共鳴光電子分光を用いて調べた。すべてのCr及びRuをドープしたNAMOシステムにおいてMnのe$_{g}$成分による金属的なフェルミ端が観測され、これらのシステムの金属的な性質をよく説明する。t$_{2g}$$^{3}$配置を取るCrの3d状態は、フェルミエネルギーの下約1.3eVにあり、またCrのe$_{g}$状態はフェルミエネルギー近傍のバンド形成には関与していない。Cr及びRuが誘起する強磁性と金属-絶縁体転移は、測定によって得られた電子構造によって理解できる。

Abstract

We have characterized the electronic structure of FeSe1-xTex for various x values using soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SXPES), high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES) and inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES). The SXPES valence band spectral shape shows that the 2 eV feature in FeSe, which was ascribed to the lower Hubbard band in previous theoretical studies, becomes less prominent with increasing x. HRPES exhibits systematic x dependence of the structure near the Fermi level (EF): its splitting near EF and filling of the pseudogap in FeSe. IPES shows two features, near EF and approximately 6 eV above EF; the former may be related to the Fe 3d states hybridized with chalcogenide p states, while the latter may consist of plane-wave-like and Se d components. In the incident electron energy dependence of IPES, the density of states near EF for FeSe and FeTe has the Fano lineshape characteristic of resonant behavior. These compounds exhibit different resonance profiles, which may reflect the differences in their electronic structures. By combining the PES and IPES data the on-site Coulomb energy was estimated at 3.5 eV for FeSe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The process of NaCl reabsorption in the distal nephron allows freshwater fishes to excrete hypotonic urine and seawater fishes to excrete urine containing high concentrations of divalent ions; the relevant transporters, however, have not yet been identified. In the mammalian distal nephron, NaCl absorption is mediated by Na+-K+-Cl- cotransporter 2 (NKCC2, Slc12a1) in the thick ascending limb, Na+-Cl- cotransporter (NCC, Slc12a3) in the distal convoluted tubule, and epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in the collecting duct. In this study, we compared the expression profiles of these proteins in the kidneys of euryhaline and seawater pufferfishes. Mining the fugu genome identified one NKCC2 gene and one NCC gene, but no ENaC gene. RT-PCR and in situ hybridization analyses demonstrated that NKCC2 was highly expressed in the distal tubules and NCC was highly expressed in the collecting ducts of euryhaline pufferfish (mefugu, Takifugu obscurus). On the other hand, the kidney of seawater pufferfish (torafugu, Takifugu rubripes), which lacked distal tubules, expressed very low levels of NCC, and, in the collecting ducts, high levels of NKCC2. Acclimation of mefugu to seawater resulted in a 2.7x decrease in NCC expression, whereas NKCC2 expression was not markedly affected. Additionally, internalization of NCC from the apical surface of the collecting ducts was observed. These results suggest that NaCl reabsorption in the distal nephron of the fish kidney is mediated by NCC and NKCC2 in freshwater and by NKCC2 in seawater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Soft-x-ray-excited angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy studies on silicon dioxide films formed utilizing oxygen radicals (ORs) and oxygen molecules (OMs) with or without forming gas annealing (FGA) are reported. The SiO2/Si interface structure formed utilizing ORs were only slightly influenced by FGA. On the other hand, although the thickness of oxide film formed utilizing OMs is weakly influenced by FGA, the FGA-induced nearly 10% decrease in the amounts of Si1+, Si2+, and Si3+ formed utilizing OMs were found. Therefore, the interface structure formed utilizing OMs is influenced by FGA.

Abstract

The magnetic properties of mono- and dierbium(Er) metallofullerenes have been studied by means of a synchrotron soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (SXMCD) technique. The effective magnetic moment of the Er ions has been estimated to be 8.48 Band is independent of the number of Er ions encapsulated inside the fullerene cage. These Er metallofullerenes exhibit an antiferromagnetic-like behavior at low temperatures that is stronger in ErC82(C2visomer) monometallofullerene than in Er2C82(C2v) and Er2C2C82(C2v) dimetallofullerenes. The result suggests that the unpaired spin on the monometallofullerene cages causes an indirect magnetic interaction between Er 4f spins of neighboring metallofullerenes. Furthermore, we have found that the Weiss temperatures of the metallofullerene remain the same even when one of the Er ions in Er2C2C82(Cs) is replaced by a nonmagnetic Y ion (i.e., ErYC2C82). The results indicate that interaction between the two Er ions in the same fullerene cage does not contribute significantly to the overall magnetic properties.

Abstract

The electronic structure of the insulator lithium amide (LiNH_2), which is a lightweight complex hydride being considered as a high-capacity hydrogen storage material, is investigated by N 1s soft x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The XES and XAS spectra show a band gap between the valence and conduction bands. The valence band in the XES spectrum consists of three peaks, which extend up to ～-8 eV from the valence band top. The band calculation within the local-density approximation (LDA) for LiNH_2shows energetically separated three peaks in the occupied N 2p partial density of states (pDOS) and the band gap. The energy distribution of three peaks in the XES spectrum agrees with that in the calculated pDOS except for the peak at the highest binding energy, which is attributed to the strongly hybridized state between N 2p and H 1s. The XES experiment has clarified that the strongly hybridized state with H 1s in LiNH_2is located at binding energy higher than that of the LDA calculation, while the overall feature of the electronic structure of LiNH_2experimentally obtained by XES and XAS is consistent with the calculated result.

Abstract

The domain structure of antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO(100) has been investigated by nonmagnetic x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) at the O K edge using photoemission electron microscopy and linearly polarized x-ray light. The evolution of XLD image contrast as the function of the angle between the crystal orientation and the incident s- or p-polarized light is clearly observed. The angular dependence of the XLD contrast is in good agreement with the calculated x-ray absorption cross section of O 1s to 2p orbital that is deformed anisotropically by the strong hybridization with Ni 3d orbitals. This agreement strongly supports the conclusion that the observed XLD contrast reflects the twin-domain (T-domain) structure of the NiO crystal. By comparing the experimental data with the calculation, it is possible to assign each domain contrast to a specific T-domain in the quantitative manner. The proposed simple and clear way of T-domain assignment will be useful for investigating the magnetic domain structures of NiO and other oxide AFM materials such as FeO, CoO, and CuO, and will be important for understanding the magnetic properties of AFM materials, such as the exchange bias effect.

Abstract

The electronic structure of the insulator lithium amide (LiNH_2), which is a lightweight complex hydride being considered as a high-capacity hydrogen storage material, is investigated by N 1s soft x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The XES and XAS spectra show a band gap between the valence and conduction bands. The valence band in the XES spectrum consists of three peaks, which extend up to ～-8 eV from the valence band top. The band calculation within the local-density approximation (LDA) for LiNH_2shows energetically separated three peaks in the occupied N 2p partial density of states (pDOS) and the band gap. The energy distribution of three peaks in the XES spectrum agrees with that in the calculated pDOS except for the peak at the highest binding energy, which is attributed to the strongly hybridized state between N 2p and H 1s. The XES experiment has clarified that the strongly hybridized state with H 1s in LiNH_2is located at binding energy higher than that of the LDA calculation, while the overall feature of the electronic structure of LiNH_2experimentally obtained by XES and XAS is consistent with the calculated result.

Abstract

We have investigated the magnetic electronic structures of PtMnSb, Ni2MnSb, Ni2MnSb,MnSb, MnAlGe, and Mn2Sb by soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements in the Mn 2p core absorption region. Different degrees of the electron itinerancy of the Mn 3d states are discussed. The large orbital angular momentum of the Mn 3d electrons is revealed for MnSb by the MCD spectrum. In addition, the XAS and MCD spectra are measured in the Sb 3d, Ni 2p, and Pt 4f core excitation regions. An induced magnetic moment of Sb valence orbitals with the spin antiparallel to that of Mn is clearly indicated for NiMnSb and Mn2Sb.

Abstract

We report the core photoabsorption (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra in the Pt N6,7(4f→5d) region of the ferromagnetic CoPt3. The measured XAS spectra have shown typical Fano line shapes, and the MCD spectrum has shown very unusual features that cannot be explained within the framework of the conventional selection rule for the dipole transition. It is revealed from a theoretical analysis that the strong Fano effect is essential to interpret these MCD features. We will discuss in detail the influence of the Fano effect on the Pt N6,7 MCD line shape.

Abstract

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) has been measured for ferromagnetic CoS2 in the S 2p, Co 2p and 3p core absorption regions. MCD in the S 2p region is discussed in terms of the exchange splitting of the unoccupied band. The Co 2p MCD has revealed that the orbital angular momentum of the Co 3d state remains finite in spite of its low-spin configuration. This situation is confirmed by a simple cluster model calculation.

Abstract

We have performed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments to study the cancellation of spin and orbital magnetic moments in (Sm, Gd)Al2, a ferromagnet without net magnetization at a certain compensation temperature, Tcomp. We verified the existence of long-range order for both spin and orbital magnetic moments at Tcomp. The spin and orbital magnetic moments of the Sm ion are found always antiparallel coupled and the magnitude of its orbital magnetic moment is always larger than that of spin one, so the cancellation of magnetic moments cannot be achieved by only Sm 4f electrons. We show that the addition of spin magnetic moments of Gd ions and conduction electrons, which are ferromagnetically coupled with the spin magnetic moment of Sm ions, cancels out the surplus orbital magnetic moments in Sm ions completely and results in the zero magnetization at Tcomp. All our experimental results can be reproduced well by atomic multiplet calculations.

Abstract

We have studied the low-energy electronic structure of a Kondo insulator YbB12 by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. A "Kondo peak" is observed ~25 meV below the Fermi level, which agrees well with the Kondo temperature, whereas the gap at the Fermi level is found much smaller, indicating that the magnetic properties at higher temperatures (>75 K) are indeed determined by the Kondo effect in spite of the gap formation at lower temperatures. A renormalized band picture is presented to describe the coexistence of the Kondo peak and the transport gap as well as the highly asymmetric line shape of the Kondo peak.
