This study was conducted to determine if correlations exist between the numbers of microscopic follicles comprising ovarian follicular reserve (OFR) and antral follicle counts (AFCs), and to assess the usefulness of computerized analyses of ovarian ultrasonograms and magnetic resonance (MR) images for estimating OFR in excised porcine, ovine and bovine ovaries. As a pre-requisite to these analyses, we characterized and compared ovarian cortical histomorphology and follicle populations in the three species varying in prolificacy and overall reproductive longevity, and hence the total number of microscopic and antral follicles. Ultrasonographic and MR images were obtained at the scanner settings optimized to provide opposing contrasts between antral follicles and the ovarian stroma. Commercially available ImageProPlus® analytical software was used to calculate numerical pixel values (NPVs) and pixel heterogeneity (standard deviation of the pixel values) along the computer-generated lines (4-6) placed in the area corresponding to the ovarian cortex. The numbers of primordial (r = 0.38, P < 0.01) and intermediate follicles (r = 0.37, P < 0.01) were correlated with the numbers of antral follicles in bovine ovarian sections. The numbers of primordial (r = 0.28, P < 0.05), intermediate (r = 0.31, P < 0.01) and primary follicles (r = 0.27, P < 0.05) correlated directly with mean NPVs of the ultrasonographic ovarian images in cattle. There was a negative correlation between primary follicle numbers and NPVs of MR images (3D FAST-SPOILED GRADIENT ECHO) of the porcine ovarian cortex (r = -0.31, P < 0.05). To summarize, the numbers of primordial and intermediate follicles could only be estimated from AFCs in cows. Using ultrasound NPVs, the numbers of primordial, intermediate and primary follicles could be directly estimated in bovine ovaries and the quantitative image attributes of MR images were useful for quantifying porcine primary follicles. The bovine ovarian model is compatible with human situation and hence future studies should be undertaken to ascertain the usefulness of AFCs and ultrasonographic image analyses for estimating OFR in women., (© 2014 by the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine.)

Nanowater (NW; water declusterized in the low-temperature plasma reactor) has specific physicochemical properties that could increase semen viability after freezing and hence fertility after artificial insemination (AI) procedures. The main goal of this study was to evaluate ram semen quality after freezing in the media containing NW. Ejaculates from 10 rams were divided into two equal parts, diluted in a commercially available semen extender (Triladyl®; MiniTüb GmbH, Tiefenbach, Germany) prepared with deionized water (DW) or NW, and then frozen in liquid nitrogen. Semen samples were examined for sperm motility and morphology using the sperm class analyzer system and light microscopy. Cryo-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) was employed to determine the size of extracellular water crystals in frozen semen samples. Survival time at room temperature, aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) concentrations post-thawing as well as conception/lambing rates after laparoscopic intrauterine AI of 120 ewes were also determined. There were no significant differences between DW and NW groups in sperm progressive motility (26.4 ± 12.2 and 30.8 ± 12.4%) or survival time (266.6 ± 61.3 and 270.9 ± 76.7 min) after thawing and no differences in the percentages of spermatozoa with various morphological defects before or after freezing. There were, however, differences (P < 0.05) in AspAT (DW: 187.1 ± 160.4 vs. NW: 152.7 ± 118.3 U/l) and ALP concentrations (DW: 2198.3 ± 1810.5 vs. NW: 1612.1 ± 1144.8 U/l) in semen samples post-thawing. Extracellular water crystals were larger (P < 0.05) in ejaculates frozen in NW-containing media. Ultrasonographic examinations on day 40 post-AI revealed higher (P < 0.05) conception rates in ewes inseminated with NW (78.3%) compared with DW semen (58.3%), and the percentages of ewes that carried lambs to term were 73.3% and 45.0% in NW and DW groups, respectively (P < 0.01). In summary, the use of a semen extender prepared with NW was associated with a substantial improvement in the fertilizing ability of frozen-thawed ram semen and lamb productivity of inseminated ewes., (© 2014 by the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine.)

Background: Modulation of the enteric nervous system seems to be promising in several functional colorectal disorders for which targeted, causal treatment methods do not exist. However, sacral nerve stimulation can induce undesirable muscle contraction or paresthesia. Therefore, we have developed a laparoscopic technique for implanting a neural electrode, placed directly over the pelvic autonomic nerve plexus. The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the effect of stimulating the hypogastric plexus and pelvic nerves on inducing distal colon contraction, defecation, and micturition., Method: A total of 10 white, male healthy pigs (25-30 kg) were subjected to the laparoscopic implantation of the electrode and the stimulator. In the third and fourth weeks postimplantation, the efficacy of the acute and chronic stimulation to induce defecation was evaluated., Results: The average operative time was 105 minutes (85-150 minutes). In all pigs, acute stimulation activated induced defecation, every second day, every time on demand, with an average delay of 139.7 s. Micturition was induced incidentally. Acute or chronic stimulation did not cause any harm, pain, or suffering to the animals. No adverse effects of the stimulation were observed, and no septic complications or macroscopic fibrosis around the electrodes were found on autopsy., Conclusion: Hypogastric plexus stimulation can be a useful and safe option of distal colon contraction, defecation, and micturition. However, the efficacy of the stimulation was observed for a relatively short period of time, and it is not known if it will be sustained for a longer duration., (© The Author(s) 2014.)

Variation in two SNPs and one microsatellite on the Y chromosome was analyzed in a total of 663 rams representing 59 breeds from a large geographic range in northern Eurasia. SNPA-oY1 showed the highest allele frequency (91.55%) across the breeds, whereas SNPG-oY1 was present in only 56 samples. Combined genotypes established seven haplotypes (H4, H5, H6, H7, H8, H12 and H19). H6 dominated in northern Eurasia, and H8 showed the second-highest frequency. H4, which had been earlier reported to be absent in European breeds, was detected in one European breed (Swiniarka), whereas H7, which had been previously identified to be unique to European breeds, was present in two Chinese breeds (Ninglang Black and Large-tailed Han), one Buryatian (Transbaikal Finewool) and two Russian breeds (North Caucasus Mutton-Wool and Kuibyshev). H12, which had been detected only in Turkish breeds, was also found in Chinese breeds in this work. An overall low level of haplotype diversity (median h = 0.1288) was observed across the breeds with relatively higher median values in breeds from the regions neighboring the Near Eastern domestication center of sheep. H6 is the dominant haplotype in northwestern and eastern China, in which the haplotype distribution could be explained by the historical translocations of the H4 and H8 Y chromosomes to China via the Mongol invasions followed by expansions to northwestern and eastern China. The aim of the present study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of nuclear ubiquitous casein and cyclin-dependent kinases substrate 1 (NUCKS1) in invasive breast carcinoma of no special type, in association with clinicopathological characteristics, including the tumor grade, frequency of lymph node involvement and distant metastasis. In addition, associations between NUCKS1 and other tumor subtype markers, including estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), Ki-67 and cytokeratin 5/6 (CK 5/6), were investigated. NUCKS1 expression was shown to be associated with the formation of distant metastases and lymph node involvement. Furthermore, an association between the presence of NUCKS1 and histological grading was observed. The results confirmed that the expression of NUCKS1 in low grade invasive breast carcinoma of no special type was significantly less common compared with cases of high grade carcinoma. With regard to the additional tumor subtype markers, NUCKS1 expression was demonstrated to be significantly associated with Ki-67 and CK 5/6; however, no association was identified with ER, PR and HER2. Therefore, NUCKS1 may be a novel prognostic marker in the histopathological evaluation of invasive breast carcinoma of no special type.

Nineteen cycling ewes underwent transrectal ultrasonography of ovaries followed by ovariectomies during the growth phase of the first follicular wave of the interovulatory interval or the proestrus/estrus phase of the cycle. Quantitative ultrasonographic characteristics of the antrum and follicular wall in a total of forty-three ovine antral follicles were examined for correlations with the protein expression of three steroidogenic enzymes (cytochrome P450 17α-hydroxylase, CYP17; cytochrome P450 aromatase, CYP19; and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, 3β-HSD) determined by densitometric analysis of immunohistochemical slides, follicular dimensions, granulosa layer thickness and the percentage of apoptotic granulosa cells. Significant correlations were found between echotextural attributes of ovine antral follicles and the percentage of apoptotic granulosa cells, CYP17 expression (theca), CYP19 expression (granulosa) and 3β-HSD expression (theca cells). Computer-aided analyses of ultrasonographic images can be beneficial to the development of assisted reproductive technologies and diagnosis of hormonal imbalances without the need for ovarian biopsies or hormone assays.

Aim: To evaluate the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic upper pole heminephroureterectomy (HNU) in pediatric patients with duplex kidneys in comparison with open surgery., Patients and Methods: From 2007 to 2011, 27 patients underwent HNU. A dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) isotope scan revealed hypofunctioning of ipsilateral moieties in all cases. The patients were divided randomly into laparoscopic HNU (LHNU) and open surgery HNU (OHNU) groups. LHNU was performed by the transperitoneal approach in 10 girls and 5 boys with a mean age of 33 months (range, 9-108 months). All procedures were performed using three or four ports. Open surgery was performed in 10 girls and 2 boys with a mean age of 29 months (range, 7-174 months) by the retroperitoneal approach in all cases. Follow-up included ultrasound and DMSA., Results: Mean operative time in the LHNU and OHNU groups was 148 minutes (range, 100-220 minutes; 95% confidence interval [CI] 129-167 minutes) and 124 minutes (range, 100-150 minutes; 95% CI 115-133 minutes), respectively. In the LHNU and OHNU groups, mean analgesic requirement was 2.8 days (range, 2-4 days; 95% CI 2.4-3.2 days) and 3.7 days (range, 3-5 days; 95% CI 3.3-4.1 days), and mean hospital stay was 4.0 days (range, 2-8 days; 95% CI 3.2-4.8 days) and 5.1 days (range, 3-8 days; 95% CI 4.3-5.9 days), respectively. No intraoperative or major postoperative complications occurred. No conversion to open surgery was necessary in the LHNU group. Statistical analysis showed no statistical significant difference (P>.05) in the operating time between groups, whereas differences in the mean hospital stay (P=.048) and analgesic requirements (P=.005) were significant. The function of the remnant pole was preserved in all patients. Follow-up ultrasound showed asymptomatic cystic structures in 1 patient., Conclusions: The laparoscopic upper pole HNU is a safe and feasible procedure, even in infants. It is associated with minimal morbidity, and the operative time is acceptable and not significantly longer in comparison with the open approach. LHNU reduces analgesic requirements and hospital stay. In our opinion it should be the preferred option for HNU in children.

Introduction: Laparoscopic appendectomy is a safe and feasible technique accepted by many surgeons as the gold standard approach for the treatment of acute appendicitis in children. Traditionally laparoscopic appendectomy requires the use of three ports. However, surgical techniques with fewer ports have been reported., Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of laparoscopic appendectomy in children according to the proposed 3-step protocol using one, two or three ports., Material and Methods: A total of 100 children with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis underwent laparoscopic appendectomy. Patients were treated according to the following protocol: transumbilical access with one 10 mm port using the laparoscope with working channel. The appendix was mobilized and delivered through the umbilical port and tied extracorporeally and removed. If the appendix was placed retrocecally or had adhesions, a second port was introduced. The appendix was mobilized and finally retrieved from the abdominal cavity through the camera port, and resected extracorporeally. In the cases of very short and gangrenous appendix and immobile colon, a third port was introduced and totally intra-abdominal appendectomy was performed. Patients were evaluated regarding the duration of the operation, and operative and postoperative complications., Results: During the study period 100 children (58 males, 42 females) had laparoscopic appendectomy: 48 children by one-port technique (group I), 27 children by two-port technique (group II) and 25 children by three-port technique (group III). The mean operative time was 33 min (20-55 min) in group I, 39 min in group II (23-60 min), and 49 min (30-75 min) in group III. There were no intraoperative complications. Wound infections were recorded in 4 (8.3%) patients in group I, three (11.1%) in group II and four (16.0%) in group III. One patient in group III developed an abdominal abscess managed conservatively., Conclusions: One-port laparoscopic appendectomy is a feasible technique in children. It allows 48% of children to have the operation. The addition of a second port allows one to mobilize the appendix and perform extracorporeal resection in an additional 27% of cases. These approaches have shorter operative time compared to 3-port technique. Laparoscopic extracorporeal appendectomy, especially one-port, is found to be cost effective and have excellent cosmetic results.

In this Letter, we present the technology of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscription in highly birefringent (HB) few-mode microstructured fibers (MSFs) with two different (nanosecond and femtosecond) lasers in a Talbot interferometer setup. The spectral characteristics of FBGs written in the core region of the investigated fiber, with particular modes represented by dual peaks, are presented and discussed. Furthermore, we calculate the fundamental fiber parameters (mode effective refractive index and phase modal birefringence) from the spectral characteristics and show very good agreement with the performed numerical fiber characterization. We expect the results of our experiments to be very useful in future development of FBG sensors based on novel HB MSFs, with enhanced strain sensitivity of higher-order modes.

Background: Hepatoblastoma arising from and limited to the caudate lobe is an extremely rare clinical entity. The object of this case report is to present a case of isolated caudate lobe resection due to hepatoblastoma originating in the caudate lobe., Methods: The patient was an 18-month-old male who was admitted with a huge tumor located in the left hepatic lobe. The histological diagnosis was fetal type of hepatoblastoma. The patient received 4 cycles of preoperative and 2 cycles of postoperative chemotherapy., Results: During surgical exploration, a well-defined, exophytic tumor originating in the caudate lobe was found. Isolated caudate lobe (Spiegel lobe) resection was performed. The intra- and postoperative course was uneventful. Surgical margins were negative for tumor. The patient remains alive with no signs of recurrence 15 months after surgery., Conclusions: Isolated caudate lobe resection is one of the most challenging procedures in liver surgery. Despite the technical difficulties and high complications risk, isolated caudate lobectomy can be performed successfully in children. It needs to be noted that in the reported case, preoperative chemotherapy shrunk the tumor and largely facilitated its resection., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)

We demonstrate an experimental study of the chromatic dispersion properties for a series of microstructured fibers (MSFs) dedicated for a supercontinuum generation. With white-light interferometry application we analyze experimentally how the small variations of structural parameters, i.e. an air-hole diameter and a lattice constant, influence dispersion characteristics in different groups of MSFs. Our study provides useful information on how to design the fiber which is less sensitive to the fabrication imperfections. Moreover those investigations are the initial step to the development of the customized or tunable supercontinuum light sources based on MSFs with slightly changed structural parameters which can generate light with a different spectrum range, adapted to a proper application.

Daily transrectal ultrasonography was carried out in eight 4-5-month-old Polish Large White×Polish Landrace gilts for 42 days to monitor the growth of individual ovarian antral follicles≥2 mm in diameter. In total, 52.4±16.2 and 123.0±6.7 follicles per gilt (mean±SD) that grew to ≥4 mm were identified during the first and second 21-day study periods, respectively (P<0.01). Four follicular waves (defined as the synchronous growth of a group of follicles from 2-3 mm to ≥4 mm) emerged during the first period, and five waves emerged during the second period. The maximum diameters attained by the largest follicles of waves were 5.7±0.6 and 7.0±0.5 mm (first and second periods, respectively; P<0.01). The present results provide direct evidence for the rhythmic, wave-like pattern of antral follicle recruitment in prepubertal gilts. The number of follicles and maximum diameter they attain increase significantly during the expected activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian axis in prepubescent gilts.

PURPOSE The results of a survey assessing the practice settings, clinical activities, and reimbursement experiences of pharmacists with advanced-practice designations are reported. METHODS A questionnaire was sent to all certified Pharmacist Clinicians in New Mexico and all Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners in North Carolina (a total of 189 pharmacists at the time of the survey in late 2008) to elicit information on practice settings, billing and reimbursement methods, collaborative drug therapy management (CDTM) protocols, and other issues. RESULTS Of the 189 targeted pharmacists, 64 (34%) responded to the survey. On average, the reported interval from pharmacist licensure to certification as an advanced practitioner was 11 years. The majority of survey participants were practicing in community or institutional settings, most often hospital clinics or physician offices. About two thirds of the respondents indicated that their employer handled the billing of their services using standard evaluation and management codes, with estimated total monthly billings averaging $6500. At the time of the survey, about 80% of the respondents were engaged in a CDTM protocol. The survey results suggest that pharmacists with advanced-practice designations are perceived favorably by patients and physicians and their services are in high demand, but more than one third of respondents indicated a need to justify their advanced-practice positions to administrators. CONCLUSION Pharmacists with advanced-practice designations are providing clinical services in various settings under collaborative practice arrangements that include prescribing privileges. Despite growing patient and physician acceptance, reimbursement challenges continue to be a barrier to wider use of CDTM programs.

Anorectal malformations (ARMs) occur in approximately 1 per 5000 live births. The most commonly used procedure for repair of high ARMs is posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP). This operation is performed entirely through a perineal approach. The first report of laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through (LAARP) for repair of ARMs was presented by Georgeson in 2000. The aim is presenting early experience with laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through technique in boys with high anorectal malformations. In the last 5 years 7 boys (9 months to 2 years old) with high ARMs were operated on using the LAARP technique. Laparoscopically the rectal pouch was exposed down to the urethral fistula, which was clipped and divided. Externally, the centre of the muscle complex was identified using an electrical stimulator. In the first 4 patients after a midline incision of 2 cm at the planned anoplasty site, a tunnel to the pelvis was created bluntly and dilated with Hegar probes under laparoscopic control. In the last 3 boys a minimal PSARP was done creating a channel into the pelvis. The separated rectum was pulled down and sutured to the perineum. Laparoscopic mobilization of the rectal pouch and fistula division was possible in all cases. There were no intraoperative complications except one ureteral injury. Patients were discharged home on post-operative day 5 to 7. The early results prove that LAARP, an alternative option to PSARP for treatment of imperforate anus, offers many advantages, including excellent visualization of the pelvic anatomical structures, accurate placement of the bowel into the muscle complex and a minimally invasive abdominal and perineal incision. It allows for shorter hospital stay and faster recovery. However, to compare the functional results against the standard procedure (PSARP), longer follow-up of all patients is necessary.

Background: Identification of global livestock diversity hotspots and their importance in diversity maintenance is essential for making global conservation efforts. We screened 52 sheep breeds from the Eurasian subcontinent with 20 microsatellite markers. By estimating and weighting differently within- and between-breed genetic variation our aims were to identify genetic diversity hotspots and prioritize the importance of each breed for conservation, respectively. In addition we estimated how important within-species diversity hotspots are in livestock conservation., Results: Bayesian clustering analysis revealed three genetic clusters, termed Nordic, Composite and Fat-tailed. Southern breeds from close to the region of sheep domestication were more variable, but less genetically differentiated compared with more northern populations. Decreasing weight for within-breed diversity component led to very high representation of genetic clusters or regions containing more diverged breeds, but did not increase phenotypic diversity among the high ranked breeds. Sampling populations throughout 14 regional groups was suggested for maximized total genetic diversity., Conclusions: During initial steps of establishing a livestock conservation program populations from the diversity hot-spot area are the most important ones, but for the full design our results suggested that approximately equal population presentation across environments should be considered. Even in this case, higher per population emphasis in areas of high diversity is appropriate. The analysis was based on neutral data, but we have no reason to think the general trend is limited to this type of data. However, a comprehensive valuation of populations should balance production systems, phenotypic traits and available genetic information, and include consideration of probability of success.

Background: BK virus nephropathy (BKVN) is a significant cause of renal allograft loss. Although overall intensity of immunosuppression is the greatest risk factor, recipient immune factors likely also play a role in the pathogenesis. Dendritic cells (DC) are potent antigen-presenting cells important for the induction of anti-viral cytotoxic T-cell responses. In a previous univariate analysis, we demonstrated a peripheral blood DC (PBDC) deficiency in patients with biopsy-proven BKVN, raising the possibility that reduction in DC predisposed to BK reactivation., Methods: In this study, we refined our previous analysis by comparing random posttransplant PBDC levels between an expanded group of patients with BKVN and controls without viremia using a multivariate analysis that accounted for factors known to influence PBDC levels. Next, we compared pretransplant PBDC levels between patients stratified by the presence or absence of posttransplant viremia. Finally, we assessed the predictive value of pretransplant PBDC levels for the development of posttransplant viremia., Results: Analyses revealed a PBDC level deficiency not only posttransplant in patients with BKVN but also pretransplant in patients who subsequently developed posttransplant BK viremia. Furthermore, we identified a pretransplant PBDC level that is a reasonable predictor for the development of posttransplant viremia., Conclusions: Our results identify PBDC deficiency as a previously unrecognized risk factor for BKV reactivation after renal transplantation. Pretransplant PBDC monitoring may prove to be a useful clinical tool in the assessment of patient vulnerability to BKVN posttransplant, which may allow more focused screening.

Objective: The objective was to assess the effectiveness of the newly developed immunomodulator RESAN in the prophylaxis and treatment of endometriosis induced in rats., Study Design: The study was performed on 58 Wistar rats. Twelve weeks before endometriosis induction, the RESAN vaccine was administered to 24 rats (100 mg i.m. and 100 mg s.c.). Endometriosis induction was performed in 48 rats, which were divided into two groups: group I, the prophylaxis group, consisting of 24 previously vaccinated rats; and group II, the treatment group, comprising the other 24 rats, which had not been vaccinated. The graft (4 mm x 4 mm) of endometrium was attached to the parietal peritoneum. A sham operation was performed in 10 rats (group III). After 3 months, a second laparotomy was performed in all animals, and endometriotic foci were excised when present. RESAN was administered to the group II animals. After an additional 3 months, a third laparotomy was performed in all animals of the three groups., Results: Positive, histologically confirmed endometriosis was found in 4.3% of the animals in group I and in 69.6% of group II rats (p<0.0001). Macroscopic assessment revealed endometriosis in 21.7% and 91.3% of animals in groups I and II, respectively (p<0.0001). At final laparotomy, 3 months after excision of the previously suspected foci, no signs of endometriosis were found according to both macroscopic assessment and histological examination. During the second laparotomy intraperitoneal adhesions were present in 13.0% of the animals in group I and in 61.0% of those in group II. No adhesions were present in group III. At the final laparotomy, the adhesions were present in only three of the animals in group II (p<0.0009)., Conclusions: RESAN seems to be effective in both the prophylaxis and treatment of endometriosis, as well as in the prophylaxis of adhesions. Histological confirmation of endometriosis should be mandatory.

Antiphospholipid syndrome is an autoimmunological disease, characterized by coexistence of antiphospholipid antibodies in serum and vascular thrombosis or characteristic obstetrical complications. In spite of numerous clinical trials concerning antiphospholipid syndrome in pregnancy, performed in Poland as well as abroad, there are still some unclear aspects connected with this disease. In the paper, authors pay particular attention to patomechanism and contemporary diagnostic trends of antiphospholipid syndrome in pregnancy.

Blunt abdominal trauma with isolated rupture of the normal renal pelvis is an extremely rare clinical entity. The correct preoperative diagnosis may be difficult and challenging because of the insidious onset, lack of blood loss, and frequently, lack of urinary symptoms. Intraoperative inspection of the collecting system is the most accurate method to fully define an extent of injury. The object of the case report is to present the case of a 15-year-old male with isolated pelvic rupture of a normal kidney because of strong punch in the abdomen during the handball match.

Purpose: Splenectomy is frequently required in children for various hematologic pathologic findings. Because of progress in minimally invasive techniques, laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) has become feasible. The objective of this report is to present a multicenter experience of 159 laparoscopic splenectomies., Methods: Records of 159 children, who underwent LS in 3 pediatric surgery centers between 1996 and 2006, were reviewed retrospectively with a special questionnaire. The indication for splenectomy were hematologic disorders (147), esophageal varices (6), splenic cyst (5), and tumor of the tail of the pancreas (1). The LS was performed using standard laparoscopic technique and instrumentation., Results: There were 75 boys and 84 girls. Median age was 12.5 years (range, 2-19.4 years). Laparoscopic splenectomy alone was performed in 118 cases and LS with cholecystectomy or cholecystotomy in 36. In 5 cases, LS was performed together with fundoplication. Eight LS required conversion to an open procedure for following reasons: severe bleeding (3), massive splenomegaly (1), anatomical (2), and technical aspects (2). Accessory spleens were identified in 20 cases (12.6%). There was no mortality. Complications consisted of 8 conversions and postoperatively of mild generalized infection in 3 children and abdominal bleeding that resulted in re-laparoscopy in 1 case., Conclusions: Laparoscopic splenectomy can be safely and effectively performed in children.

Considering multidirectional mechanism of antiphospholipid antibodies activity, resulting in fetal loss, various therapeutic methods of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) in pregnant women have been used until now. The paper is a review of literature concerning therapeutic methods of APS in pregnancy currently used or being clinically and experimentally investigated. Their efficacy, in particular, forms of the disease as well as risk of side effects occurrence were presented.

The chromosome 4 inversion with breakpoints p13-p15q35 results in a recombinant 4 [rec(4)] chromosome with a partial 4p duplication/4q deletion in approximately 80% of the carriers' offspring. However, whether the recombinant 4p syndrome can be recognized as a clinical entity is still open to controversy. We report on two sisters diagnosed with rec(4) resulting in a partial 4p trisomy/4q deletion that was inherited from their mother, who is a carrier of inv(4)(p14q35). Both probands presented phenotypes consistent with those observed in other children with rec(4)parental, supporting the proposal that the rec(4)parental syndrome is a distinct entity among dup(4p) cases and may be suspected on the basis of the pattern of clinical symptoms. To the best of our knowledge this is only the second report of family with two probands affected with a recombinant chromosome 4 arising from a parental pericentric inversion.

Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the most common sexually transmitted human pathogens. Chlamydial infection is a problem concerning about 12% of young, sexually active persons at reproductive age. Because of subtle or, particularly at women, asymptomatic course, the disease may be imperceptible by patients and untreated until complications occur. When the infection spreads outside cervix and urethra,W irreversible damages in the range of genital-urinary system are often. Fever and leucocytosis can confirm the complications, occurring in the form of pelvic inflammatory disease, causing infertility. Health education, screening programs for high risk patients and proper early treatment of both sexual partners could contribute to decreasing dangerous results of chlamydial infections, especially in aspect of marital infertility problem.

In the paper there has been presented a history of microsurgical technique's introduction to gynaecology, in which it started to be used as a method of treatment of women's mechanical infertility. Different types of microsurgical operations of oviducts have been characterized, with particular regard to their effectiveness. There have been also discussed the factors influencing the final effect of surgical treatment of tubal infertility with the use of microsurgical technique.

In the paper there have been evaluated synthetic nonabsorbable surgical sutures--PROLENE. The valuation concerned their usefulness to carrying out the operations of oviducts with use of microsurgical technique. It consisted in determination of biocompatibility degree of analyzed sutures within tubal tissues and also their technical utility to this kind of procedures. The valuation of the surgical sutures was performed on the ground of experimental studies with use of laboratory animals--New Zealand white female rabbits, in which end to end microsurgical tubal anastomoses were made, with use of analyzed sutures. In further stage, pathomorphological investigations of the animals were performed (in various time after the operation), during which there were conducted microscopic observations of histologic slides derived from tubal anastomoses regions. The purpose of the work was trying to appoint the most adequate suture material for carrying out the operations of oviducts with use of microsurgical technique. It was also an assistance for an operator to take a decission of choice of the proper surgical sutures for surgical treatment of female mechanical infertility and other kind of microsurgical operations which are performed in gynaecology. Generally good technical utility in microsurgical practice of nonabsorbable surgical sutures--PROLENE was stated. They cause the formation of only single peritoneal adhesions, mainly in the regions of tubal anastomoses previously made and produce relatively small tubal tissue reaction, which testifies to high biocompatibility of the sutures, as the implantation material. The analyzed surgical sutures characterize themselves of very good usefulness to microsurgical operations of oviducts.

Mycoplasmas belong to the large group of microbes and may cause pathologic symptoms in different human organs and systems. The most of them are commensals. They are mostly detected in sexually active persons. Only few of mycoplasmatic species are unquestionable etiological factors of different human infections. They cause illness of respiratory system and kidneys. They are frequently connected with nongonococcal urethritis, epididymitis, prostatitis as well as female pelvic inflammatory disease. Mycoplasmas as etiological factors of genital organ infections have been kept in background of other pathogens for a long time. Recently, the connection between mycoplasmatic infections and marital infertility has been noticed more often. Nowadays this problem is frequently described in Polish as well as foreign scientific literature. The article is an attempt to introduce the problem of mycoplasmatic infections of urogenital male and female system. Simultaneously, it tries to answer the question whether and how they can be an essential cause of marital infertility.

The evaluation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, as one of the most important antioxidative defence enzymes, in seminal plasma of patients consulting for male infertility was presented in the article. The study included also the determination of its influence on selected human semen quality parameters. The material represents semen samples obtained from 15 men, which were divided into two groups: Group I (n=10) including patients consulting for infertility and Group II (n=5) containing healthy sperm donors as a control. All of the semen samples were cryopreserved and stored in liquid nitrogen. The frozen samples were thawed at the same time and then SOD activity was determined spectrophotometrically. The analysis of the investigations results indicates a significantly lower semen SOD activity detected in oligoasthenozoospermic patients, comparing to the activity found in normospermic men. The study showed a positive correlation between SOD activity in seminal plasma and semen quality parameters--sperm concentration and overall motility, which are regarded as the most important for normal fertilizing ability of the spermatozoa. Significantly lower SOD activity in seminal plasma of infertile patients, comparing to healthy sperm donors, as well as positive correlation and beneficial impact of SOD activity on human semen quality parameters seem to confirm the observations, that decreased seminal plasma scavenger antioxidant capacity, particularly in form of low SOD activity, can be responsible for male infertility. This trial shows that SOD activity survey in seminal plasma could be a useful tool for determining sperm fertilization potential and could improve the diagnosis of male infertility.

A case of Edwards' syndrome (trisomy 18) diagnosed in the third pregnancy trimester is described. The diagnosis was based on sonographic examination and cytogenetic amniocentesis. Lethal genetic fetal malformation determined the medical indication to preterm delivery. Additionally, serologic incompatibility during pregnancy was observed, as well as pregnancy induced hypertension turning into preeclampsia after the labour action was evoked. A caesarean section due to obstetric indications was done. Phenotype and lethal congenital malformations in the newborn have confirmed of the chromosome aberration prenatally diagnosed.

Three distinct mitochondrial maternal lineages (haplotype Groups A, B, and C) have been found in the domestic sheep. Group B has been observed primarily in European domestic sheep. The European mouflon carries this haplotype group. This could suggest that European mouflon was independently domesticated in Europe, although archaeological evidence supports sheep domestication in the central part of the Fertile Crescent. To investigate this question, we sequenced a highly variable segment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in 406 unrelated animals from 48 breeds or local varieties. They originated from a wide area spanning northern Europe and the Balkans to the Altay Mountains in south Siberia. The sample included a representative cross-section of sheep breeds from areas close to the postulated Near Eastern domestication center and breeds from more distant northern areas. Four (A, B, C, and D) highly diverged sheep lineages were observed in Caucasus, 3 (A, B and C) in Central Asia, and 2 (A and B) in the eastern fringe of Europe, which included the area north and west of the Black Sea and the Ural Mountains. Only one example of Group D was detected. The other haplotype groups demonstrated signs of population expansion. Sequence variation within the lineages implied Group A to have expanded first. This group was the most frequent type only in Caucasian and Central Asian breeds. Expansion of Group C appeared most recently. The expansion of Group B involving Caucasian sheep took place at nearly the same time as the expansion of Group A. Group B expansion for the eastern European area started approximately 3,000 years after the earliest inferred expansion. An independent European domestication of sheep is unlikely. The distribution of Group A variation as well as other results are compatible with the Near East being the domestication site. Groups C and D may have been introgressed later into a domestic stock, but larger samples are needed to infer their geographical origin. The results suggest that some mitochondrial lineages arrived in northern Europe from the Near East across Russia.

Background: Sentinel lymph node identification has been tested in lung cancer patients with conflicting results. The present study was designed to assess the sensitivity, negative predictive value, and accuracy of intraoperative sentinel lymph node mapping by means of a radio-guided method in patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer to find the most appropriate definition of sentinel lymph node and to evaluate the usefulness of different particle sizes of radiocolloid., Methods: One hundred ten patients with clinically N0 nonsmall cell lung cancer were enrolled in the pilot study of intraoperative sentinel node identification. Four quadrants of the peritumoral tissue were injected with 2 mL of 0.5 mCi technetium-99m suspension. Four radiocolloids of different particle size were used. After complete lymphadenectomy, all resected lymph nodes were examined with hematoxylin-eosin staining. All sentinel nodes negative for metastases by routine staining were searched further for metastatic deposits with both serial sections and immunohistochemistry for cytokeratins., Results: The radio-guided method had a high identification rate, a high sensitivity, and a high negative predictive value (100%, 87%, and 93%, respectively) when immunohistochemistry was considered. When standard hematoxylin and eosin staining was applied, sensitivity and negative predictive value of sentinel lymph node labeling was lower (74% and 89%, respectively). No significant differences were found in either the sensitivity or negative predictive value among the colloid solutions of different particle size used in radio labeling, although smaller particles have shown a tendency to produce better results., Conclusions: The radio-guided technique provides efficient sentinel lymph node identification in lung cancer. Further studies are warranted to confirm the clinical utility of this strategy.

Aim of the Study: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of 3 years oral specific immunotherapy in patients with perannial allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma caused by allergy to mites., Material and Methods: Fifteen patients with allergic perannial rhinitis entered the study. Ten of them suffered also from bronchial asthma. During 3 years of therapy we have monitored the appearance of side effects, clinical parameters (symptoms degree and medication usage score) and immunological parameters (serum eosinophil cationic protein concentration and leukotriene C4 liberation by peripheral blood leukocytes upon in vitro specific allergens stimulation)., Results: We have not observed the appearance of any adverse event, so medication has been recognized as a safe. Moreover, we have observed a lot of positive therapeutical effects--the lowering of symptoms scores, accompanied by advantageous changes in immunological parameters. However, in spite of 3 years of therapy, many patients still reported the substantial clinical symptoms, accompanied by still elevated serum ECP concentration and relatively high leukotriene C4 liberation by peripheral blood leukocytes upon in vitro stimulation by specific allergens., Conclusion: Oral specific immunotherapy in the patients with allergic diseases of upper airways is a safe medication but leads only to moderate clinical efficacy accompanied by lowering serum ECP concentration and reducing of leukotrienes C4 liberation by peripheral blood leukocytes stimulated by specific allergens.

The influence of copper upon some physiological parameters and reproduction in ewes was studied. Four groups of animals were investigated: 1/ control ewes (untreated); 2) ewes receiving copper as a supplement over the recommended amount of copper in food (10, 25 or 50 mg Cu/ewe/day); 3/ control, superovulated ewes; and 4) ewes treated with 50 mg copper during one month and then superovulated. After 10 months of daily exposure to 10 mg of copper/ewe/day no signs of toxicity on physiological condition and reproduction were found. In ewes exposed to 25 or 50 mg of copper a decrease in blood parameters and increase in concentration of Cu in blood and liver were noticed. The wavy pattern of follicles was disturbed and disorders in fecundity, prolificacy and pregnancy occurred. Significant differences between the number of corpora lutea in superovulated control animals and experimental (Cu 50 mg) ewes were observed.

Background: Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent antigen-presenting cells that induce and regulate immune responses. Recent advances allow accurate quantification of peripheral blood (PB) myeloid and plasmacytoid DC populations (mDC and pDC, respectively), although the response to renal transplantation (RT) remains unknown., Methods: Using flow cytometry, PBDC levels were quantified in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing renal transplantation., Results: PBDC levels were significantly reduced in ESRD patients pretransplantation compared to healthy controls, with further reduction noted immediately following a hemodialysis session. RT resulted in a dramatic decrease in both subsets, with a greater reduction of pDC levels. Both subset levels were significantly lower than in control patients undergoing abdominal surgery without RT. Subgroup analysis revealed significantly greater mDC reduction in RT recipients receiving antilymphocyte therapy, with preferential binding of antibody preparation to this subset. Samples from later time points revealed a gradual return of PBDC levels back to pretransplant values concurrent with overall reduction of immunosuppression. Finally, PBDC levels were significantly reduced in patients with BK virus nephropathy compared to recipients with stable graft function, despite lower overall immunosuppression., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that PBDC levels may reflect the degree of immunosuppression in renal allograft recipients. Furthermore, PBDC monitoring may represent a novel strategy to predict important outcomes such as acute rejection, long-term graft loss, and infectious complications.

Enzymatic activity of cysteine peptidases (cathepsins B and L) --associated with carcinogenesis is controlled by their specific inhibitors. The study was objected to the effects enhanced by taxol and cisplatin in patients pretreated with the vitamin E, by determining the levels of cathepsins B and L in sera of patients with ovarian cancer. The activity of cysteine peptidase (CP) and their inhibitors (CPI) in serum from patients with ovarian cancer and noncancerous patients were measured by using fluorogenic substrate before and after the routine anticancer chemotherapy, and a complementary combination of chemotherapy with vitamin E. The cat B and L activities were significantly higher in patient sera with ovarian cancer than non-cancerous patients (0.0001 pounds sterling). The results shows that, inhibitory activity of CPI and complex form were significantly decreased from 4.6 mEU/mg protein in a group of non-cancerous patients to 0.7 mEU/mg protein in a group of patients with ovarian cancer (p < or = 0.0001). Supplementation with vitamin E after a cycle of therapy with toxic drugs caused a decrease of the cysteine peptidases activities, that is 2.8-fold in patients to whom 40 0mg of vitamin E per day was given in comparison with control, and 6-fold after the third course. The CPI and DCPI complex increased 3-fold and 2.3 fold respectively, as compared to a group of patients were vitamin E was not administered. We observed that vitamin E administered to the patients with ovarian cancer in periods between anticancer drugs therapy courses decreases the cysteine peptidases activity and increases the enzyme-inhibitor complexes level

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy before resection is being the standard of care for stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer in many institutions. The risk of complications in patients undergoing thoracotomy after induction chemotherapy remain controversial. We reviewed our experience. From 1998 to 2003, 29 patients underwent pulmonary resection after induction chemotherapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Pneumonectomies were performed for 16 (55.2%) patients (2 right sleeve pneumonectomy and 1 pneumonectomy with wedge excision of tracheal carina), lobectomies for 11 (37.9%) patients (3 right upper sleeve lobectomy), segmentectomies for 1 (3.45%) patient and explorative thoracotomy for 1 (3.45%) patient. There were 3 (10.3%) postoperative deaths, all after right pneumonectomy; 2 caused by pneumonia of the left lung, 1 caused by pulmonary embolism in patient after re-thoracotomy for hemothorax. The postoperative complications included pneumonia in 2 patients, postoperative bleeding in 2, hemothorax in 1, prolonged intubation in 1, vocal cord paralysis in 2, cardiac arrhythmia in 2, atelectasis in 1 and residual air space in 1, resulting in 41,4% morbidity. Most of complications occurred after right pneumonectomy (45.5%). The mortality of patients who had received induction chemotherapy was higher than that of a comparative group of 1529 who underwent lung resection or only exploration without induction chemotherapy during the same period, and the difference was significant (10.3% vs 4.1%; p = 0.01). Morbidity differences were. not significant (p = 0.94).

Folliculogenesis was studied daily in the 18 oestrous cycles in six prolific Olkuska ewes from October to December using transrectal ultrasonography to record the number and size of all ovarian follicles > or =2 mm in diameter. Blood samples were taken once a day and were analyzed for concentrations of FSH, LH, estradiol and progesterone. Follicular and hormonal data were analyzed for associations between different stages of development of the follicular waves and concentrations of FSH and estradiol. The first wave during which at least one follicle reached maximum diameter of > or =4 mm after ovulation, was defined as a wave 1, and the following waves were numbered sequentially. Waves 1, 2, 3, 4 and the ovulatory one emerged on days: -2 to 4, 4 to 8, 6 to 11, 10 to 12 and 11 to 15, respectively. The mean number of follicles per wave that reached diameter of > or =4 mm was 4.15 +/- 1.1 and 16.62 +/- 8.6 follicles per estrous cycle of a total 299 follicles were observed. Significantly more follicles (p> or =0.05) emerged on days 2, 8 and 13 than in other days. Serum FSH concentrations fluctuated from 0.11 ngml(-1) on day 2 to preovulatory maximum 1.81 ngml(-1) on day 17 of the estrous cycle. The emergence of follicular waves was associated with elevations of FSH concentrations in blood serum. The mean increase in FSH concentration was followed by the recruitment of follicles of the next wave. The mean daily FSH concentration and the mean number of follicles emerging each day were negatively correlated. The length of the interwave interval (4.4 +/- 1.6 days) did not differ significantly from the interval between pulses of FSH (4.8 +/- 0.3 days). The mean serum estradiol concentrations showed fluctuations until day 14 and then gradually increased from 5.47 +/- 0.3 pgml(-1) to reach a peak 13.14 +/- 0.2 pgml(-1) on the day before ovulation. To summarize, the growth of ovarian follicles during the estrous cycle in high fecundity Olkuska sheep exhibited a distinct wave-like pattern. Ovarian follicles emerged from the pool of 2 mm follicles. The preovulatory follicles originated from the large follicle population were present in the ovary at the time of luteal regression. The initial stages of the growth of the largest follicles appears to be controlled primarily by increases in FSH secretion.

The severe loss of developmental competence affecting fertilized ova when removed from the oviductal environment suggests that this organ plays a functional role in early embryonic development. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sheep heat-inactivated OF on the mortality rate of ovine embryos produced in vitro and transferred into recipients. As control groups we used embryos fertilized and cultured in media supplemented with different kinds of proteins (FCS, BSA). Transfer of embryos in the two pronuclei stage to the oviducts of synchronized recipients resulted in 60% of successfully termed pregnancies after incubation of embryos in OF, 40% in BSA and only 10% after FCS. All ewes were further assessed for pregnancy by ultrasonography 33, 53 and 80 days after embryo transfer. The highest embryo mortality appeared between day 33 and 52. We concluded that incubation of ovine oocytes in OF during the final period of the maturation process may play a functional role at the time of fertilization and early embryonic development.

Results of treatment of 13 patients with extensive defects of soft tissues in the upper extremities treated with pedicled radial forearm flaps are presented (11 fascio-cutaneous flaps and 2 adiposo-cutaneous). The group included 5 females and 8 males aged 9-85 years (mean age: 37 years). The defects followed trauma in 12 cases and in one case it was the result of oncological resection. The flap was used as a primary procedure in 4 cases after amputation of the finger or degloving of the hand. The flap appeared very useful in delayed reconstructions in older patients with extensive defects of soft tissues and bones, especially in the elbow region. Complete survival of all flaps with very good late results were obtained. Donor sites were covered with skin grafts and healed correctly in 11 patients. In two patients healing of the donor site prolonged in time for over 6 weeks. No other complications were observed using this method.

The study was undertaken to investigate the steroid hormone production by sheep luteal cells. Corpora lutea were collected from 30 Olkuska sheep on Days 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 of the estrous cycle during the reproductive season. In Experiment 1, steroid hormone concentration was estimated in extracts of CL. In Experiment 2, luteal cells were cultured in vitro for 24 h. Luteal cells isolated on Days 9 and 12 secreted high amounts of progesterone and androgens but smaller amounts of estradiol. Concentration of these steroids in CL extracts collected on the same days showed the same trend. In CL harvested on Day 15, a decrease in androgens and progesterone as well as a significant increase in estradiol were observed in culture media and in extracts. Judging from the high amounts of estradiol and low amounts of androgen observed at the end of the luteal phase, we speculate that the steroid hormones secreted by the regressing CL may play an active role in the regulation of the estrous cycle in the Olkuska sheep with autocrine influence on the luteal activity or a possible paracrine action on follicular growth. In the third Experiment, the possibility of heterogeneity in the multiple corpora lutea population of prolific Olkuska sheep was investigated. Differences were found in the level of progesterone and estradiol secretion by individual corpora lutea recovered from the same animal, which also varied in terms of weight. This is the first study which shows the existence of intra-ovarian and individual heterogeneity between corpora lutea recovered from ewes during the normal estrous cycle.

Using immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis we attempted to identify the estrogen receptors in ovine luteal cells at different stages of the estrous cycle. Monoclonal antibody against estrogen receptors was used for immunolocalization of estrogen receptor-alpha in corpora lutea sections. Generally, the most intense cytoplasm staining was present in large luteal cells. On the 6th day of the estrous cycle, weak immunostaining of estrogen receptors was observed in large luteal cells as well as in the connective tissue. Luteal cells from regressing corpora lutea expressed the weakest immunostaining. The most intense immunoreactivity for estrogen receptors was found in sections of corpora lutea collected on the 9th day of the cycle. Both, cytoplasmic and nuclear localization was observed depending on cell types in the ovine corpus luteum. Our studies demonstrated the presence of the estrogen receptor-alpha in the luteal cells and suggested an autocrine/paracrine role of estrogen in the regulation of estrous cycle in sheep.

In the years 1981-1997 at the Department of Plastic Surgery Medical Centre for Postsgraduate Education in Warsaw 116 patients were treated surgically using groin flaps and 97 patients using a pedicled cutaneous groin flap. This paper reports the results of the later technique. Reconstructions were performed in 10 female patients aged 18-58 (mean age 37.5 years) and 87 male patients aged 15-67 (mean age 33.8 years). The tissue defects or acquired deformations were caused by: crush injuries (26 cases), scalping injuries (23 cases), rugged injuries (18 cases), avulsion trauma (15 cases), explosion injuries (8 cases) and electric burns (7 cases). Flap size depended upon extent of the tissue defect and the from flaps were 7-26 cm long and 4-12 cm wide. Flap area ranged from 35 to 260 square centimetres. Emergency procedures were performed in 59 patients (61%). Secondary reconstructions were carried out in 38 cases (39%). Operative technique was based on the rules described by McGregor and Jackson. The donor site was sutured primarily tubulizing its basis--as in tube flap. The flap pedicle was cut off during a one stage procedure in 41 patients 21-30 days (mean 23 days) after surgery or during a two-stage procedure in 56 cases. The two-stage procedure consisted of an incision of part of the pedicle after 15-45 days post-op (mean 21 days) followed by a complete dissection after a few days (mean 4 days). In 44 cases the flap required modelling i.e. excision of excessives kin and/or thinning of subcutaneous tissue. The flap healed in 96 patients (99%). Complications at different stages of the treatment were observed in 40 patients (41%). In 3 cases wound ischemia was observed because of too tight suturing. Removal of skin sutures lead to normalization of blood supply. In 7 patients cyanotic skin of the distal part with no significant consequences was observed. In 27 patients (28%) necrosis of the marginal tissues surrounding the operation wound after cutting of the pedicle was noted. Besides supported necrectomy a conservative treatment was also applied by putting dressings soaked with antiseptics and 0.5% neomycine solution on a daily basis. This prolonged treatment by further several weeks. No significant complications were observed at the donor site.

The study was designed to compare the direct effect of three prolactin-like hormones on steroidogenesis of ovine luteal cells collected at day 40-45 of pregnancy. 100 ng/ml of ovine placental lactogen or 100 ng/ml of ovine growth hormone or 100 ng/ml of ovine prolactin were added to the media of luteal cell cultures. After 48 h incubation, all cultures were terminated and the media were frozen until further steroid analysis. To determine to what extent growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL) and lactogen (PL) regulate the activity of 3 beta-HSD, an enzyme involved in progesterone synthesis, the classical steroidal competitive inhibitor of 3 beta-HSD trilostane, was investigated for its effects on basal and GH-, PRL-, and PL-stimulated progesterone biosynthesis since there is a possibility that the luteotropic effect of these hormones are mediated via 3 beta-HSD. oPL resulted in an increase of progesterone secretion in a statistically significant manner, while GH or PRL had no effect on progesterone secretion. A decrease in progesterone secretion as an effect of 100 mM trilostane was observed in all culture types. An explanation for the luteotropic effect of PL and the lack of this effect for GH is that the GH receptor associates with a different molecule within the ovarian tissue and forms a heterodimeric receptor for PL, and the possibility that physiological effects of native oPL may be mediated through its binding to specific PL receptors, which have low affinities for oGH and oPRL.

PTHrP is a HHM-inducing peptide. It exhibits certain structural similarity to PTH and the two hormones may act through the same receptors. PTHrP is known to be produced in various tissues as well as during development. In this study we decided to immunocytochemically demonstrate PTHrP in normal skin and squamous cell carcinomas as well as in parotid glands (normal, inflamed and neoplastic). In the skin, PTHrP expression was demonstrated in epidermis and in smooth muscle cell layer of blood vessels. In squamous cell carcinomas, the expression was noted in foci of keratinization. In parotid glands, the peptide was localised in excretory ducts and in blood vessels, while inflammation of the gland and its tumours resulted most frequently in the less intense immunoreaction. The results are consistent with those of other authors. The novel observations include demonstration of PTHrP expression in myoepithelial cells of sweat glands and in parotid glands, where it may be involved in the control of their contractile activity.

The susceptibility of Escherichia coli K1, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium strains and their adaptative forms resistant to colistine (Colr forms) was compared with respect to their sensitivity to the bactericidal action of normal cord serum and normal bovine serum. It has been shown that the Colr forms are more susceptible to sera as compared to initial strains. The increase of sensitivity of the Colr forms is connected with structural changes within bacterial cell wall which is the target for complement as well as for colistine.

The objective of this study was to identify whether high ovulation rate in high fecundity Polish Olkuska Sheep results from within ovary differences by comparing the number, size and estradiol concentration in ovarian follicles obtained from high fecundity ewes of Olkuska breed, non prolific Polish Mountain Sheep and the crossbreed between them. The ovaries were obtained after laparotomy from the anesthetized animals on the 17th day after the onset of estrus. The diameter of individual follicles was estimated with the use of operating microscope with a calibrated scale in the ocular. Dissected follicles were stored at -20 °C for the estradiol estimations in the homogenates. The mean number of highly estrogenic and medium follicles in crossbreed was significantly lower than that in Olkuska and significantly higher than that in Polish Mountain. However, mean estradiol level in high estrogenic and medium follicles in three investigated groups was not significantly different. Mean ovulation rates were 3.1 for Olkuska, 1.5 for Polish Mountain and 2.2 for crossbreed. It is concluded that, like in Booroola sheep, the increased number of follicles that mature and ovulate results from the differences within the ovary. The recruitment of ovulatory follicles in high fecundity Olkuska sheep, lasts longer than in non prolific Polish Mountain sheep and similar tendency has been observed in crossbreed.

Several variations of 52 original Polish "ZESPOL" osteosynthesis were employed in 50 children in bone diaphyses fractures treated at the 2nd dept. of Cardiac and General Pediatric Surgery. In 3 patients complex treatment was carried out by joined teams of 2nd dept. of the Cardiac and General Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology Ward of Niekłańska Street Pediatric Provincial Hospital, Warsaw. Follow-up period showed no early post-operative complications or bone healing disturbances. Excellent functional and cosmetic state of the operated extremities was preserved in all cases.
